Book Description

The stirring, full-color oral biography of the singer whose pure, haunting voice came to be loved by millions around the world after her tragically brief life.

Eva Cassidy's albums Songbird, Live at Blues Alley, Eva By Heart, Time After Time, and Imagine have sold over a million and a half copies in the U.S. and millions more worldwide. Her songs have been heard on many television shows and film soundtracks, and the video of her classic performance of "Over the Rainbow" is the most requested in BBC history. Yet she lived to see only one of her solo albums released, a CD she underwrote herself and sold from the trunk of her car before her tragic death.

Capturing Eva's essence and tender life story, Eva Cassidy: Songbird collects the intimate memories of relatives, close friends, and the musicians who collaborated with her. The book tells the story of her too-brief life and enduring music. Featuring candid full-color photos and reproductions of Eva's original artwork, a vivid portrait emerges of a woman who devoted her energies to the things she truly loved-giving encouragement to those around her, tending to plants at the nursery where she worked, and performing her music at clubs in Washington, D.C. She succumbed to cancer at age thirty-three just as the world was starting to notice her arresting voice.

Eva Cassidy's music continues to grow in recognition from critics and legions of fans throughout the world. The rock icon Sting has said her voice possesses "a magical quality. People respond to its purity. It suggests something ethereal-something unattainable." This American edition contains two new chapters about her influences and her posthumous success in her native country. With the publication of Eva Cassidy: Songbird, the woman behind the unforgettable voice will at last be known.

I am an Eva Cassidy fan from years ago. I was so pleased to hear that their was a book written about one of the most talented women singers of all times.
This book takes you into the life of Eva from beginning to her last days of life with cancer.
I couldn't put it down.
This book is like a rich scrapbook filled with pictures and stories. You will come away from it feeling the void Eva has left and happy to have gotten to know about her life.
If you are a fan...this is a must have.
If you never heard of Eva, do something nice for yourself and purchase one of her Cd's and this book. You won't be sorry you did!

What a beautifully told story of the woman behind the
incredible voice. Input and photos from family and
friends along with background information about her
music really pieces it all together for a great read.

I stumbled upon a recording of "Over the Rainbow" by Eva Cassidy. It moved me immensly and though I have heard this number sung by many others, this particular version seemed to reach out and touch my heart like no other had done before!

I have subsequently read all about her and am in the process of collecting all her albums. It's a shame God has taken away a golden voice that seems just a touch away...

She has sung with her heart and added feeling to each note, word and movement.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2007-05-15

It just arrived in the mail and I can hardly wait to carve another bird. This book gives the carver just what he needs--patterns from the front and side plus top and bottom views! Lots of black and white photos, but then you get color photos just when you need them--which is when you begin to paint the bird. Plus, I really like the way the birds look. If I can't produce a fine looking bird from this book it will not be from lack of direction. This beats just about any other bird carving book I have, and believe me I have bought a lot of them!

Rosalyn Daisey's book is a suberb example of how to author a "how to" book. It's top notch in patterns, instructions, and illistrations. You can't go wrong with any of her books. I'm impressed enough to own them all.

5 out of 5 stars Rosalyn Diasey can help even a novice painter look great!.......2001-11-19

My husband, Ron, is an excellent carver and has been doing songbirds for about ten years. He brings life to his carvings by burning the feathers in with such detail nearly everyone reaches out to "pet" his birds. This past year he decided to go beyond the "natural" look and asked me to paint a robin so that the gift to our grandson would be from both of us.
I had only worked with watercolors previously and so, having had no experience with acrylic painting, I was still able to follow the instructions in this wonderful book and came out with a robin that looked very real. In fact, when painting one day, I had to answer the door and the guest flinched, thinking I was holding a real robin. Now if I can only come up with her instructions for painting a blue bird and/or a blue herron I would be grateful beyond words.

Book Description

The Songs of Wild Birds is a unique introduction to the voices of more than fifty native birds. Along with beautiful songbirds, the book features owls, rails, bitterns, snipe, and a host of lesser-known birds that make strange, curious, or bizarre sounds. The informative text and outstanding photographs are accompanied by memory phrases and sonagrams that provide phonetic and visual representations of songs. In fifty essays, Lang Elliott shares his favorite stories about these birds, with emphasis on the unusual aspects of their singing or calling behavior. The accompanying sixty-five-minute audio compact disc presents samples of all the songs and calls discussed, along with narrated introductions by the author.

Full page photos of numerous birds are faced by a page of details. What makes this item extra special is the included CD with the call or song of each bird. It's a rare treat to see, hear and read the why's of each bird. It's great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Learning Bird Calls.......2007-04-08

The quality of the sound on the CD, and the photos are excellent. Our dog and cat thought we were playing the CD for them! Only wish it covered more than 50 birds.

5 out of 5 stars Lang Elliott at his best.......2007-03-15

The Songs of Wild Birds by Lang Elliott gives us glimpses not only into the romantic lives of birds, but into the author's life as well. Lang Elliott serves up a sumptious package: lucid, engaging, and informative text, knock-out photos, and a CD to listen to over and over again. Elliott takes the academic study of bird songs and broadens it to include the aesthetic. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Songs of Wild Birds beautiful and fascinating.......2007-03-09

The close-up photos of wild birds in this book are simply breath-taking. It is not just a coffee-table book, though. The text conveys interesting information--even for someone who is well-read in ornithological literature--and the CD is superbly done. These are not the typical bird i.d. recordings, but carefully selected cuts which sometimes include rarely heard songs and calls.

4 out of 5 stars Full review at www.birdaz.com/blog.......2006-12-30

Lang Elliott is among the best and best-known recordists of birdsong in North America. His new book, The Songs of Wild Birds, is a combination of words, images, and often spectacular sounds that will delight and intrigue birders and non-birders alike.
I particularly enjoyed the eery "quartet" performed by trilling Eastern Screech-Owls; the juxtaposition of eastern and western Winter Wren vocalizations is extremely informative and useful, as are the illustrations of dialect differences in White-crowned Sparrows.

5 out of 5 stars A winner for all levels of birders.......2007-08-10

This beautifully written book will appeal to all levels of birders, from novices to experts. It is a great introduction to the lives of songbirds (and would make a wonderful gift for someone you hope to interest in birds), and it also includes some historical background and news of the latest research that dedicated birders will find interesting. That's a difficult balance to achieve, but Chu has done it magnificently. Especially useful (for all levels of birders) is the copious concrete information about things we can do to improve the lives of songbirds and projects in which we can help. My Christmas shopping got a lot easier when I read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Invitation to Birding.......2007-08-07

Birds are so all around us, it is not surprising that we might take them for granted, especially the songbirds that can be found in any backyard or feeder. Almost half the 10,000 species of birds on Earth are songbirds, the jays, larks, swallows, wrens, warblers, and others which have complex voiceboxes. They may be commonplace, but that does not mean that we know all there is about them. Many of them have complicated migration routes and behaviors that ornithologists have only in the past decades come to understand. The migratory songbirds of the Americas are covered in _Songbird Journeys: Four Seasons in the Lives of Migratory Birds_ (Walker Books) by Miyoko Chu. Ornithologists say that most of the birds of North America evolved over many millennia in the tropics and gradually pushed their boundaries northwards. Some came and stayed, and others developed the pattern of coming north in the warmer months to take advantage of the food supply and to bring forth the next generation before returning to warmer climes for the winter. There are literally billions of birds involved in this passage, but capacity to track them has been technologically available only in recent years, and Chu, an ornithologist at the renowned Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, brings readers up to date with scientific news about a remarkable research frontier.

As fascinated as humans have always been by birds, there were limits of perception in tracking the migrants. Chu gives a brief history of how hard it was to track these birds that do most of their travel at night before they could be seen on radar. Of course, tracking with radar required correlation with ground observations, and observers have a lot of work during the weeks that birds stream in to regions like our Gulf Coast. Chu describes the procedures for coastal Louisiana, where "mist nets" of a mesh so fine the birds cannot see them are set up to trap them. Among the surprising ways of tracking birds is though analyzing their blood for specific elemental isotopes; geographic areas differ in the levels of such isotopes, so a bird staying in a particular region picks up particular isotopes, which can be analyzed to see where the bird has been. A surprising new way to watch birds at night is to listen for their nocturnal calls. Determined (and sleep-deprived) observers eventually pinned down which calls went with which birds, allowing a technological breakthrough in nighttime birdwatching. Borrowing computer software used to pick out whale songs from other undersea noises, observers can point microphones at the sky and allow computers to monitor just what is passing overhead. And anyone who wants to can take part: thirty bucks will buy you a rooftop microphone to feed the sounds into a home computer, for the downloadable software to analyze.

This illustrates one of the most attractive parts of Songbird Journeys. Throughout the book are not just reports of what we already know, but invitations to get involved in helping to know more. Chu's delightful book follows the inescapable modern tradition of justified fretting over what will happen to its subjects; global warming, communications towers, illegal caging, pesticides, deforestation (at either end of the journey), acid rain, and more have made life hard (or impossible) for some migratory species. The book is, however, pleasantly optimistic in asserting that more information will find better answers, and suggesting that any reader might participate. There are not only instructions on how and when to visit the areas of research listed here, but also exhortations to consider setting up birdhouses and recording how they are used, taking part in a one day Christmas bird count (it's not on Christmas, but on a specific day chosen between 14 December and 5 January) to identify species of birds within specific regions, or simply to enter readings in The Great Backyard Bird Count, with no travel requirements. Chu shows repeatedly how small bits of information, summed with other small bits, have made a difference in our understanding of how birds live. This would be a lovely book especially for young people who are interested in how natural science is done and want to do some.

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginning birders.......2007-06-06

I read this book as part of my exercises to complete my activities for the book "Forty Excuses to Get Together with the Girls," specifically "Excuse #10: Because I Want to Know that Bird's Name." (This is a chapter that has step-by-step instructions on how to start watching birds. The book has 39 other chapters devoted to other areas of interest.) I am a beginning birder and so much of the information was new and fascinating to me and it really helped put my local expeditions in a much larger perspective. I found myself picking it up every once in awhile for a birding "fix."

5 out of 5 stars Bird Migration.......2007-03-15

This book provides a comprehensive and exciting desctiption of the amazing achievements of migrating birds in covering incredibly long distances without stopping to get to their summer or winter homelands. It is a well-written document, pleasurable and informative to read, and I recommend it to every potential, new, and experienced bird watcher.

5 out of 5 stars Gives you a lot to think about.......2007-01-11

Very informative but written in a documentary style so don't think you'll be sitting down for a leisurely read. This is heavy stuff if you love songbirds. Fifty percent of all songbirds die each year, most during migration - the rest through habitat loss, predators, etc. That's the heavy stuff; but you'll learn so much about their songs, survival techniques, and so on. Extremely interesting but not an easy read.

Book Description

One woman's search for forgiveness and peace leads her down the path of pain and despair, only to find hope via God's grace. Gospel singer Charmaine Hopewell has been searching for her mother since she was abandoned at the tender age of 11. Still, after surviving years in foster care, Charmaine appears comfortable with her life. She has a successful singing ministry and a loving husband, Harlan, whose own ministry as an evangelist is flourishing-mainly because he openly disdains pop psychology in lieu of ministerial counseling. When Charmaine finds her mother in a mental institution, however, her secret struggles with depression and her search for meaning resurface, forcing her into a decision: either hide her past for the sake of Harlan's ministry or force him to acknowledge her family's struggles and need for help. Will Charmaine finally be able to embrace the healing that is possible even after all this time?

5 out of 5 stars Songbird.......2007-03-04

I picked this book up on my way out of town. Honestly, I grabbed it because it was a mass-market paperback and would fit into my purse. The Christy Award was also a plus. While reading this book on vacation, I was drawn into Lisa Samson's story. I laughed, I cried, and at times became angry. When a book can stir these kinds of emotions in me, I always have to check out this author. Since reading Songbird, I have read many more of Lisa Samson's books, and I have not been disappointed. Lisa shows the realities of the Christian walk. While we are saved by grace, we are also human, and have to continually rely on our redeemer to bring us through. I am thankful for that mad dash to the bookstore for some vacation reading material. It is just another examples of God leading me in the right direction. ;>

5 out of 5 stars A book that feeds your soul.......2006-04-02

Songbird by Lisa Samson is hands down one of the best Christian fiction books, no I take that back, one of the best books I've ever read. Charmaine is so real she literally breathes the book into life. There are no cardboard stereotypes here, and Charmaine is quick to admit her mistakes and own them. I went in for some tests at the hospital on Friday and took the book along with me for company. I don't know that I could have had a better companion. (Jesse went too, but he was finishing up Harry Potter 6 and not much for company.) Reading Songbird was like having a sweet stranger come up and start sharing her life story with you, but in such a way that made me feel more comfortable. Charmaine was the woman in the waiting room who saw my fear and decided to put me at ease by chatting. But all the while, gently nudging my side and reminding me that God is Sovereign, He's with me, and He loves me. I read the book through lunch, the end of the tests and finished it Friday night. The subjects that Samson tackles in this book are not light: depression, honesty, psychology, and she doesn't treat them lightly. Both sides of these issues are handled from a Christian viewpoint and with love. I could see Charmaine's cycles start to run higher and lower through the chapters, but her love for her Lord stood firm. This book is like a friend you'll miss when it's over, and the reminder in it that none of us are perfect, but Jesus loves us anyway is poignant.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming!.......2005-08-07

This book is completely unlike the usual lightweight Christian fiction I've encountered before now. Myrtle Charmaine is like a member of your family by the first page. And, in spite of the heavy subject matter, Charmaine's joy in life shines through the pages of the book in a wonderfully inspiring way. I loved this book!

5 out of 5 stars Insight Into A Common Problem.......2004-12-08

Once again Lisa Samson was unafraid to tackle a murky subject, this time depression. To medicate or not to medicate, that is the faith question. She writes so honestly and right where we live, yet does it with a lot of style.

5 out of 5 stars My lands..........2004-11-03

this is a wonderful book. Myrtle Charmaine Whitehead Hopewell is a lady every woman should know. She's someone you could put on your houseshoes with and eat food with your hands. Her life has been hard, jagged even. Yet Charmaine still manages to love, despite being abandoned by her pretty waitress mother at age eleven or a string of other tragedies that follow every time she tries to care, to stay. Her love is preserved in part by a special gift, tied up with a bow and placed in her throat by God himself, the voice of a songbird.

Lisa Samson never ceases to amaze me with the quiet strength her characters possess as they erase the lines between secular and sacred bringing the reader to a better understanding of humanity as a whole. So many times in this book, I saw something of myself or people I know. No wonder this won a Christy Award. It's magical.

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert: A Carving Book Worth Owning.......2007-06-27

I have an extensive library of carving books to include the two classics "Raptors" and "Owls" by Floyd Scholz. Lori Corbett's book has earned a place among my finest carving books. It is well conceived, well organized and clearly written. Steps in carving are logical and easy to follow; yet, not trite. The writing is crisp and interesting. While there are many, many books on carving Lori's sets a high standard for others to strive. In all aspects this book excels to include pictures, illustrations, diagrams, and both carving and painting instructions. I recommend that if a carver can only afford one book of instruction and inspiration, then purchase Lori's "Carving Award Winning Songbirds" -- and at half the price of most other books! In the near future, I shall attempt to learn whether Lori can instruct as well as she can write. My thanks for a marvelous book. Mel Donaho, long time carver and instructor

5 out of 5 stars THE most complete bird carving book.......2007-03-02

Simply the most comprehensive manual on bird carving that I own.

Most books suffer some kind of short-coming. Muehlmatt's book is good, but lacks painting information. Hillman's are totally worthless..

But this book covers everything....painting, habitat, anatomy...everything.

If you are new to bird carving...buy this book FIRST! If you are a seasoned carver, buy it because you will learn something from it.

5 out of 5 stars An excelent book for bird carvers........2006-08-10

I found the instructions to be clear and well written. The photography is outstanding. One of the best books I own.

4 out of 5 stars a good refresher.......2006-02-25

4 out of 5 stars Carving Songbirds.......2006-02-24

Book Description

We humans have strong emotional responses to the voices of the birds. Their songs can soothe the spirit and bring joy to our lives. They can also, like Poe's raven, arouse darker feelings. Listening to their melodic notes, we wonder, are birds really making music? Are they singing only to one another, or do they sing to us too. Poets and musicians have borrowed from and celebrated the songs of birds in their work. Scientists have been inspired by bird song and analyzed it, solving some of its mysteries but leaving many others untouched. MUSIC OF THE BIRDS tells why birds sing and which are the finest singers. It celebrates the many varieties of bird song: flight songs, night songs, and dawn choruses. It explores the messages of poets and shows how to appreciate every bird song we hear, no matter how beautiful or mundane. Music of the Birds will be valuable to anyone interested in birds, from beginner to expert.

5 out of 5 stars Superb on all counts!.......2001-02-24

Lang Elliott's MUSIC OF THE BIRDS combines an engaging and informative text with some of the finest bird photographs ever published, then ices the cake with a bird-song CD like no other. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Most spectacular nature book in many a year.......2000-03-25

If you love nature and are not familiar with the work of Lang Elliott, then do yourself a favor and get acquainted with him pronto! Elliott is one of America's foremost natural sound recordists and nature photographers, and here, in "Music of the Birds," he uses both talents to great effect. The author of "Common Birds and Their Songs," "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs: Eastern Region," and numerous CDs of nature's sounds here presents an examination of bird song and why it has fascinated humans for many centuries.

The book examines bird song from two main perspectives: scientific and aesthetic. Elliott dispenses solid, basic science on why birds sing, the functions of specialized bird vocalizations, and other topics that have been examined by ornithologists. He also discusses how bird songs have influenced poets, with many examples from the writings of some of the greatest of all time. Indeed, it is not difficult to see how the songs of such great singers as thrushes, larks, or others inspired writers as diverse as Shelley, Whitman, and Thoreau.

Aside from the text, the book is graced with spectacular photos, virtually all of them taken by Elliott and in magificent color, of singing birds. Any birder who knows the difficuly in spotting such songbirds as warblers will be astonished by Elliott's photos of these and many more, in the act of singing no less! As if this were not enough, tucked inside the back cover you will find a compact disc of bird songs also produced by Elliott and technically superb (as are all of his productions). Virtually every bird mentioned in the text is heard on the CD, and Elliott takes time to examine special cases of particularly striking bird songs. For example, he plays the songs of thrushes at normal and slowed-down speeds so you can hear how complicated they really are (the human ear is ill-constructed to grasp all of the sounds contained in the songs of many birds).

For its combination of both educational and entertainment value, this book is hard to beat. Lang Elliott is carrying the torch of a mostly-vanished generation of naturalists who believed in exposing the wonder in the simple worlds not so far from our own backyards (most of the birds presented here are common in at least some parts of North America). Look at these glorious pictures, listen to the splendid sounds of the birds on your CD player, and if you haven't cultivated a love of birds, you probably never will.

    5 out of 5 stars A wealth of information.......2000-09-22

I've been amazed at the amount of information packed into this small book. In addition to the handy lists of information, such as the list of flowers that will produce seed for birds, there are also amusing and inspiring anectdotes sprinkled throughout the book. Definitely worth having in your library!

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to the birdlover's library!.......2000-04-04

John Terres provides fascinating insight into the life of songbirds and how to attract them to your home and garden. Beyond mere identification, the descriptions of individual bird behavior greatly enhance the birdlover's understanding of their feathered friends. Included are easy-to-follow suggestions for making your own bird feeders, houses, baths and other sundries, and references to other intriguing books on living with birds. I would highly recommend this book, more for the depth of information than it's ease of use as an identification tool.
