5 out of 5 stars Tried and True remains true for a reason..........2007-06-28

This book came recommended to me by brother who has a beautifully trained hunting lab (who does double duty as great big family dog in a teeny tiny house!). We are a dog family with many combined years of rescues and pure breeds (depending on who landed on our doorstep at the time). This current generation is the best ever thanks to methods in the Wolters books. Already our 13 week puppy is well beyond our resident geriatrics. I just bumped into the breeder we purchased her from and she stated even they are astounded just how wonderfully well-natured and confident our pup is and still retaining great drive. (The breeder, by the way, is not a fan of Wolters...due the popular criticism that floats around).

It is naive to assume all children and all dogs should be treated in the exact same manner, regardless of temperament or behavior. Agenda based criticisms of this book are as shallow as this assumption. The author of this book offers a well guided technique for training, time tested for many years now, AND possible solutions to guide owners through problem behavior. Discipline techniques are there to protect the dogs and their owners...my mother with a lame leg could be greatly injured by her 95lb Poodle if he charges past her on the stairs...as well as my 2 year old daughter. A dog that bolts from the front door may have its life ended in moments by a passing car (ask my neighbor). These measures are also only recommended IF there is a problem situation. Overlooked in criticisms are the many warnings to not over train or over discipline (your children as well) and the constant reminders for consistent and logical discipline. (I found this book a great reminder as a parent as well).

I have discovered that many of Wolters fans are people whose lives depend on their dogs and their dogs lives depend on their training. His book has remained popular for many years for a good reason: it simply and effectively accommodates many people and many breeds and literally leads to a lifetime of happiness.

1 out of 5 stars Outdate Material.......2007-05-12

Like any dog training book, you may come across a helpful tip here and there in this one. However, I found the training methods to be outdated. What this book does do well is to discuss very specific developmental stages, from birth onward, and explain why seven weeks is the best age to bring the puppy home. The last section on physical care was also somewhat helpful. As for the rest of it, I don't think I'll be employing any of the training methods discussed. In the parts of the book that discuss teaching manners, the author calls for "spanking," or giving your dog "a good cuff on the nose." The author says spanking with a newspaper is cruel, as it teaches the dog to fear loud noises, yet he suggests tin cans strung together to throw near the dog if he's stealing food, or barking at night, etc. So, at times, the author was contradicting himself. And I especially think that having a stranger "spank" your dog to teach him not to get into strange cars is probably dangerous, both for the stranger, and for the dog owner, liability wise. I would think a dog would not be too keen on strangers after having been man handled by one.

3 out of 5 stars Not The Most Helpful Book for New Pup.......2007-01-26

I was disappointed in this book for training my new pup. Far preferred the trainer Brian Kilcommons and his book Good Owners, Great Dogs. I need all the nitty-gritty, not a broad brush. I felt the Wolters book was the latter and I didn't get as much out of it. Also, even my husband who has no trouble setting limits, felt that some methods (such as knocking the dog down the stairs if it tried to pass you) were unnecessarily harsh. We want a well-behaved dog, not one with a broken back. We also felt setting the dog up for an improbable dog-napping and having a stranger start hitting the dog for getting in the open door was way out there.

5 out of 5 stars Yes! Yes! IF you love them you WILL discipline them!.......2006-11-14

I L-O-V-E this book! Our new dog, Gus (a redbone hound/ Rhodesian ridgeback mix) is a COMPLETE JOY and has been well trained since he was JUST SEVERAL WEEKS OLD because of Richard Wolters' advice! The neighbors call me "The Dog Whisperer!" As far as the review that said never spank a dog or child? PUL-EASE! Instead of self promoting, the confused (but well meaning) gentleman should read Bringing Up Boys by, Dr.James Dobson. I personally am STILL in the process of raising FOUR sons... one blissfully married, one at the University of Virginia, one at the United States Naval Academy and one a gifted junior in High School. They have ALL at one time or another THANKED us for disciplining them and loving them with parameters! If you want a GREAT dog get THIS book. A GREAT child- PRAY and have the guts to guide them!

5 out of 5 stars Family Dog.......2006-11-06

Great book. Not the first book we have used. Hunting Dog was also wonderful. The only part we did not agree with was the paper training. We just used lots of praise and a firm loud no, accompanied by a run outside. Worked wonders and you dont have to worry about paper laying on the floor becoming wet. Highly recommend this author.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST dog trick book ever.......2007-09-15

I've purchased many dog behavior and trick books over the years. This little gem is definitely the best trick book. My golden and I have had many great times learning some of the tricks. Easy to follow and the progressive technique makes great sense. I'm amazed at how fast he can learn following the simple directions. Patience and consistency as always is the key.

    5 out of 5 stars Tricks.......2007-08-28

This is a very good book. It has may good points about tricks and teaching your dog.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-08

This was a great book. Easy to follow steps. Needs more pictures. A DVD to go along with it would be better.

5 out of 5 stars my first dog book.......2007-05-13

For me this book was very helpful..about 5 or so months ago our family came accross a lost puppy so we tried to find her owners but couldnt...I knew we couldnt just give her up so we addopted her and I set myself out to raise her right. It was hard looking for a good book because I've never owned a dog and i dont know the basics...but after looking long and hard I decided I'd go with this...this book is truely helpfull the book doesnt just show you how to train your dog but how to raise her from the roots like potty training and dicipline. To me its not just a trick book its a helpful tool in you and your dogs life.

5 out of 5 stars Certainly worth the read.......2007-04-26

I bought this book to train my two year old Jack Russell. The author uses repeated training methods that are easy understand and most were simple enough for my dog to learn when I would execute them properly. Since my dog is very trainable by nature most of the tricks were worth the effort. The book offers easy to very difficult tricks which is helpful for the novice dog handler. While reading toward the end of the book I began to feel inadequate since I knew my dog wouldn't ever begin to work through the show stopping tricks that might be appropriate for a circus act. All in all I recommend buying this book if you'd like a handbook type reference to train you dog in a humane manner.

    Product Description

This user-friendly and engaging book describes a six-week program to get people and dogs off on the right paw. Inside the covers are clear descriptions of humane and scientifically-based methods to teach basic exercises including sit, down, come, heel, stay and no jumping up. As importantly, the book emphasizes how to make training fun for those at both ends of the leash, and how to ensure reliable responses while still being your dog's best friend. Also included are trouble-shooting tips for what to do when your dog hasn't read the training books and doesn't respond as expected. Equally useful as an adjunct to training classes or for people who are "home schooling", Family Friendly Dog Training will help you connect with your best friend in a way that will enrich your relationship for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent general training book........2007-07-07

Patricia McConnell knows dogs. This is an excellent training guide for those who are intent on training their dogs themselves without benefit of a good class (or who can't find a decent class to attend), and it's also a great adjunct for those who are working with a trainer.

The book gives you an effective, realistic six week lesson plan and timeline, and is behaviorally solid (unlike the theories and methods of some currently trendy TV trainers).

5 out of 5 stars Good weekly guide.......2007-05-12

I love Dr. McConnell's books on dog training and philosophy. Like the others, I found this one helpful to give me a sense of what training to be covering with my puppy each week!

5 out of 5 stars Another fabulous book by Patricia McConnell.......2007-03-03

Here is yet another fabulous book by Patricia McConnell and Aimee Moore. I am a reward-based professional dog trainer and have been using their new book, "Family Friendly Dog Training- A Six Week Program for You and Your Dog", as a supplement to my basic training program. The chapters are arranged so each chapter covers one week of a six week program. I can never cover as much material as I want in an hour class, and this book allows me to provide a more comprehensive program to my students. It is loaded with training tips and up-to-date training methods, making it a must have for the novice dog owner's library. Every professional dog trainer should be offering this book to their students. It will add value and quality to your training program. It's an easy and fun read for the pet owner, very affordable, and not lengthy, so I find all of my students can take the time to read it. I love how Patricia and Aimee describe their own challenges and experiences making the book enjoyable and personal.

Patricia McConnell has been the most influential mentor in my career. I have learned so much through her books, videos and seminars, and have read her book "The Other End of the Leash" three times.

Every dog owner should read this book!

I'm an experienced dog owner who just adopted a 4 year old rescue dog. I decided to go "back to school" and look for some new books to help me train my new dog. I bought three books by Patricia McConnell:
    1) How to be the Leader of the Pack...And have your dog love you for it
(a WONDERFUL short primer on having happy relationships with dogs)
    2) The Other End of the Leash
(a full-length book about communicating with dogs-- GREAT!!!!)
    3) Beginning Family Dog Training
(a very readable, clear, wonderful book on training dogs gently-- it works!! My dog is learning so quickly!)

This is the best author I have ever found for people who want to learn how to train their dogs through understanding effective canine-human communication. Read her books and you will never again try to train your dog through "leash pops", etc.. What a breath of fresh air! Finally, training methods you can feel really, really good about. Fun for dogs and humans. I can't say enough good things about Patricia McConnell!

5 out of 5 stars So simple, so precise........2002-11-12

This is not a book for someone working on a difficult behavior problem, nor is it a doctoral thesis. This is, just as the title says, a beginner's book for family dog training. There are no long explanations of some behavioral malady written in psycho-speak. I am quite sure Dr. McConnell could indeed do that if she wished, as there is no way something so elegantly simple could come from anything less a true expert.

66 pages of useful information. In this day and time, that's hard to find, even in a dog book of 300 pages or more. An easy read, simple, to the point- perfectly fits the title. Should be on every dog owner's bookshelf.

    Book Description

At last! A kids-and-dogs book for parents written by someone who "gets it."

This is a wonderful book. Useful, useful, useful information—all the main points in an extremely easy-to-read style. As a trainer and a mom, Colleen sees the full picture." — Dr. Ian Dunbar

Living with Kids and Dogs . . . Without Losing Your Mind by Colleen Pelar, CPDT, covers more than introducing a baby to the family dog. It has chapters devoted to each stage of a child's life with parental pointers for setting their family up for success while raising kids and dogs together.

~ Parenting books say control your dog; dog-training books say control your kids. The reality is far more complex and goes way beyond placing blame on either children or dogs for being who they are. ~

Living with Kids & Dogs . . . Without Losing Your Mind provides busy parents with simple, realistic advice to help ensure that the relationship between their kids and their dog is safe and enjoyable for all.

You will learn how to • Help your child and dog develop a strong relationship, built on trust and cooperation • Set your family up for success with a minimum of effort • Recognize canine stress signals and know when your dog is getting worried about normal kid activity • Identify serious behavior problems before someone gets hurt • Provide specific help for managing the interactions with dogs through each stage of your kids' lives from infancy through the teen years • Prevent your child from becoming part of a growing statistic—children who have been bitten by a dog.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book for all parents of kids & dogs!.......2007-08-14

This is one of the very best resources I've found for families with children and dogs. It has lots of practical kid-friendly and dog-friendly tips and ideas. I've recently read hundreds of books on similar topics while researching a book I'm writing, and this one really stood out. As a child/family psychologist, I was impressed with how solid it was, and as a therapy dog trainer, I thought the advice about dogs was spot-on! It deserves all the stars that everyone has given it!!

5 out of 5 stars Practical and positive!.......2007-05-30

Colleen writes in a reader friendly manner. Her life experiences as Mom and dog trainer have brought together this wonderful resourceful book families can turn to time and time again! I recommend this book to all families I work with as it describes practical and positive solutions for challenging and hectic lives! :)

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!.......2007-04-06

There are certainly other kids and dogs books out there but, this one is so far the best I've found. Colleen Pelar gives great, practical tips for parents of children at all ages that can be put to use immediately. I don't have children but, am active in rescue and am always looking for more training to help adopters and I learned so much. This book will be required reading for all adopters with children going forward. GREAT read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Finally-- a really great kids and dogs book!.......2006-04-22

Finally-- A really good book on how to live with kids and dogs. Most dog trainers don't have a lot of good things to say about kids (although I overhead one saying that she thought they tasted a lot like chicken!), but Colleen has written a book for parents by a parent who is also an excellent dog trainer. Colleen tells it like it is, from someone who knows. Her child-friendly, family-friendly and dog-friendly approach is realistic, safe, and right on the mark. I cannot say enough good things about Ms. Pelar or this book. Please read it and get a copy for your favorite family!

As the director of training for the 4th largest shelter in the country, I see every day that the consequences of people not having this information is that dogs end up in shelters. I applaud Ms. Pelar for writing it and helping keep dogs in their homes through education.

5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for any parent considering a canine addition to the family.......2005-11-11

Living with Kids and Dogs... Without Losing Your Mind is a no-nonsense advice guide for parents that emphasizes realistic and practical solutions to common parent/pet-owner problems. Dog training facility manager Colleen Pelar covers when not to get a dog (children under 5 are not old enough to interact with a pet responsibly and require supervision around animals; children in general cannot be burdened with the requirement to care for the pet or see it taken away - if the parent doesn't have the resources to follow up on a child's dog care then the family should not get a dog!), how to select an animal with suitable family temperament, how to prevent dog bites, and issues specific to children of various age groups from infant to teenager, and how to help one's children say goodbye to a beloved family pet when it passes on. Black-and-white photographs illustrate this no-nonsense, plain terms guide to dog care and managing a family with kids and dogs. A "must-have" for any parent considering a canine addition to the family.

3 out of 5 stars A cute book for new dog owners.......2006-01-31

Since I have been a dog owner for over 15 years and since I am an avid reader regarding the behavior of dogs I found this book to be cute but simplistic. The pages are glossy and full of darling pictures to accompany each section. The writing seems to be directed at someone quite a bit younger than I. This actually feels more like a fancy dog magazine BUT if you are new to the subject you will find some inspiration inside and will learn useful information about dog behavior. This would be an excellent book to share with children as a learning aid for their new pet.

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes The Dog Doesn't Even Know Why!.......2000-10-08

This book is so fun! I totally enjoyed reading about the antics of our funny little buddies and some reasoning for their entertaining and sometimes enraging behaviors. Great ideas for positive ways to deal with behaviors that need to be changed and thought provoking ideas about behaviors we may consider okay but just wonder why in the world they do that. This is a very humanistic, uplifting, and optimistic author. I just can't tell you how very much I enjoyed it. My angel even took a sneek peek at what I was reading, and gave both paws up for this one! You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars The best dog book ever!.......2000-09-14

I have read many books on dogs, but this book really explains some of the mysteries of their behavior with suggestions for how to improve each situation. I highly recommend it and I am buying copies for all my friends that need help with their little troublemakers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reading and Learning.......2002-01-28

This book was very informative, easy to read with associating pictures. I especially liked how chapters 6 through 11 were broken into lesson plans (e.g.) Chapter Six, Lesson Plan:Week #1. Chapter 3, Recognizing Canine Calming Signals was very interesting. Twelve calming signals were introduced by the author in a manner that was easy to understand. I can see how this chapter is essential for training and observing other canines. I highly recommend this book for training your dog. No canine owner should be without it.

5 out of 5 stars Great info for abused dogs........2002-01-21

I was given a 5month old German Shepard that had been abused verbally, and physically, no socializing, no housbreaking nothing.
I purchased this book and started reading every part of it, I was determined to make this dog a good dog. It worked, everyone that knows my dog Ranger cannot believe the progress that was made with him.
This book helps you think the way the dog thinks and is very helpful from that point of view. I would recommend this book for anyone who ownes a dog-----especially a puppy!!!!!!
Thank you Moe & Gary Ross awesome job.

5 out of 5 stars Train Your Dog, Change Your Life.......2002-01-05

I found this book to be extremely helpful and easy to read with "down to earth" information and examples. To reinforce the information, there are also very helpful "homework" assignments that are easy to incorporate into a very hectic schedule. Results were obvious within the first two weeks - my puppy suddenly started listening and responding just the way I wanted him to! THANK YOU!!!

    Book Description

Tom's grandfather is recovering from heart surgery, so during summer vacation Tom is helping him with his hunting dog business. It's hard work, but Tom doesn't mind so much after he falls in love with one of the pups, a rare blue-eyed pointer Tom names Tad. It's almost as if Tad understands when Tom talks to him, especially about confusing things like how hard it is to write to Angie, a girl Tom met on vacation.

The trouble is, Grandpa promised the owner of the pup's sire the pick of the litter, and it's pretty clear that's Tad. Tom knows what he should do, but he can't help hoping there's a way to get around Grandpa's promise. How can he do the honorable thing when it will cost him what he wants most in the world?

5 out of 5 stars Pick of ther Litter.......2007-06-03

This was a really good book. It was about a young tippicle boy still in elementry school who has feelings about people like teenagers where they hate school, hate there parents, and HOMEWORK!!! Anyway, him and his parents have to take care of his grandfathers dog shelter because he ust had heart surgery and they are selling dogs, but he has a dog that keeps following him so he starts taking care of it like its his own. Someone was calling to see the dog and when he arives the boy takes the dog and hides it. The dog runs off and sees the person looking for a dog, and the little boy starts wimping out. The grandfather sees him and tell the owner its his.

5 out of 5 stars Our six year old loves this book and so do we!.......2007-05-05

I think this book is just delightful. For any family who has a dog, wants a dog, loves dogs or even just likes them, this is a wonderful book to read aloud. Goldie is the first in a series of six books called the Puppy Place. We now have 5 of the books! First, our daughter thought Goldie was the best (and the fluffiest), then she liked Snowball, then Shadow--you get the idea. What we like about the books is that they are not too grown up, but do contain some "real world" concepts, very appropriately presented. For example, the youngest child in the family, Adam (but his nickname is The Bean), is adopted. The author mentions this matter of factly and moves on. By the way, The Bean is so sweet. He likes to pretend he is puppy and eat from a bowl on the floor! These sweet books also have an element of suspense: where will the foster puppy go when it is time? Highly recommended!

and she doesn't even like dogs! There are 4 books in this series, she is on the 3rd one and has loved each one. She is in [...]and had no trouble reading or understanding the books, so I think the age range given here (9 to 12) is a little misleading, The plot is very straighforward, which is why she is able to read them. We recently got a puppy (she wanted a kitten, but her dad is allergic) and she's learned alot about puppies, how to care for them and why they do what they do, so even though this isn't great literature it's helpful in that regard. One odd think that she had noticed - the main characters have a baby brother who is 3 - but can't talk and crawls around on the floor - her brother is 3 and he's certainly not like that. I don't know if the author just doesn't know about small children or the child has some disability that the book doesn't talk about, but my daughter always brings it up as "weird."
