very good for the price.......2004-09-13
If this were an expensive book, I wouldn't rate it so highly, but it has more information than you'd think for a cheap little paperback. The koi varieties section is mediocre, but you want a big glossy hardcover for that anyway, right? The advice on koi handling and transport is outstanding, with great emphasis on minimizing stress to your fish. There is also information on plants, something most koi keepers disdain to mention. Another reviewer thought the author was against wheat germ sticks for koi--he's not condemning them, just saying there's no proof they make a difference in over-wintering. So much of koi advice is unsupported, it doesn't hurt to mention the fact.
Ok.......2002-06-04
Where's the part about behavior, the part about training your fish to come on over (admittedly this is easy) and how about a more comprehensive types and markings - it was also sad they really skipped over butterfly koi. Otherwise nice pictures and a good disease section.
Oh well. Nice book to have, but it is not by any means complete.
Good, but could be better.......2002-05-16
This book includes everything you need to take care of koi, but sometimes in too much detail. Many of the items in this book are exactly the opposite of what I have read elsewhere (e.g wheatgerm sticks are bad for koi??)
While too much detail is usually the problem, there are also many parts when there are not enough facts to actually understand what thi book is trying to say.
It's an OK beginners guide, but some parts can be tedious and confusiong.
One of the two books you need........2002-02-07
This book has all the information you need on keeping Koi. Don't let its small size fool you. I have browse through all available Koi books, this book is the only one you need. You will not get more information from other books, except for more pictures. Buy this book and another book titled "The ponder's Bible" for excellent information on pond building and maintenance. These two books will be more than enough for keeping Koi sucessfully.
Excellent.......2000-07-18
If you're a beginner at having a pond and keeping koi, this is a great book. It has everything from digging the pond, filters and pumps...to everything you need to know to keep the pond clean for your fish. The book identifys the various breeds of koi, with a complete section on diseases.

Book fills void in current published information on subject........2007-09-01
As a breeder of clownfish in the past, I'm always interested in what progress is being made in breeding marine ornimentals. Those of like mind may wonder, as I do, why more captive bred exotics arent offered in the trade. I've heard pygmy angels are being bred, why aren't I seeing many in the shops and internet dealers? When I do see them, why are they so expensive, do they not disperse thousands of eggs when they spawn? Can I succeed in bringing a new tank raised species through metamorphosis? Are successful breeders of newly reared species sharing their secrets? Is it worth trying to breed something new without a huge bankroll?
Some of these questions are answered, some not. There is little doubt, however, that anyone interested in the subject would be glad that they picked up this book. The concepts described in the text are clarified with very good photography, and it offers a new perspective on a lot of things that anyone who has ever tinkered with this sort of thing would be interested in.

After reading through the steps in the book I was able to successfully, spawn and rear Neon Dottybacks to metamorphisis. A definite must!
In-depth, solid information on breeding marine fish species........2007-06-20
Author Matt Wittenrich is gifted with the patience and rational powers of observation that enable him to capture the important details the need to be reproduced in order for the various species of marine fishes to reproduce themselves. Breeding marine fishes is obviously the author's life's work, and it is truly to his credit that he shares step-by-step instructions from his immense store of knowledge about these fishes that for so long had been considered impossible to breed in the home. Fantastic photography of larvae, breeding sequences, sexual dimorphism, equipment, and more.

A must-read for aspiring breeders.......2007-03-05
I bought this book shortly after reading Mr. Hemdal's Advanced Marine Aquarium Techniques (a book that I've found to be very useful and informative). I am very pleased with his Aquarium Fish Breeding, as well. Whatever your skill level or motivation for breeding, you'll find invaluable insights in this comprehensive resource. A great choice for freshwater and marine breeders alike.
Most comprehensive book on this subject.......2006-04-02
As the author of this book, I'm obviously a bit biased, but this book is the only one on the market that fully covers all aspects of fish breeding. Marine fish, freshwater fish, invertebrates and plants are all covered in detail. I wrote this with intermediate aquarists in mind, so both beginners and experts may also find some "cross-over" in the material.
If you want to propagate home aquarium fish, invertebrates and plants, this book is a must-have!
Book Description
Everything the fish hobbyist needs to know about breeding fish in tanks is here! Dozens of fish species are described and their mating habits outlined. Tables and charts reveal ideal tank breeding conditions. More than 30 striking, full-color photos and dozens of precise line drawings!

A better alternative title.......2006-04-14
Although this is a good basic book on breeding freshwater tropical fish, another book with the same title written by Jay Hemdal is more comprehensive - that book was written for Barron's as a replacement for this title, and was written in 2003 (over ten years newer than this one). Hemdal's book also contains information on the breeding and propagation of marine fishes, invertebrates and plants. In addition, the Scheurmann book was written from the European standpoint, while Hemdal's book is based on North American aquariums.
A very good book........1999-10-03
A very well writen book. The book does not give enough information on breeding.A very good book.
Concise, informative and practical........1999-08-17
A straight to the point aquarium fish breeding reference book which I found concise, informative and practical.
Well organized and presented.
Breeding instructions of more aquarium fish would be desirable.
Not wasted my time and money. A very good book!
