This book is very helpful for me in training my blind Pekingese. I've gotten several good ideas from it.

5 out of 5 stars Most practical, encouraging help available to owners of blind dogs.......2007-07-21

My sweet Basset Hound Wilma developed glaucoma causing immediate blindness in one eye with the possibility of blindness in the other eye at some point. This book is full of encouragment that blind dogs can lead happy lives and really "normal" lives. It has pages and pages of practical things to do to help your dog. It is also a great resource for someone like me with a dog partially blind or beginning to lose their vision because there is a very helpful information on preparing your dog for blindness. I had felt so sad and hopeless about my dog's future until I got this book. A MUST HAVE BOOK for anyone dealing with their dog and blindness.

I am the owner of a 6 yr old rottweiler who has been diabetic since 2005 and has recently developed cataracts due to her illness. This book has been extremely informative to me as I assist my dog to adjusting to life without sight. It helped me to understand that with a little patience and guidance, my dog can still enjoy a quality life. Since this is probably a one-of-a-kind book, it is an invaluable source for owners of blind dogs. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpul & informative.......2007-04-04

I had been approached about adopting a blind puppy. I purchased this book to figure out if I would be up for the task of dealing with a blind puppy. I found this book to be very helpful & informative. I did adopt the puppy & I was able to have the house ready for her to negotiate & map out by following the book's suggestions.

"Canine Epilepsy" is a comprehensive guide to nervous system function, seizure activity, medical, and alternative treatments. This book covers related healthcare concerns such as thyroid and liver disease. It also teaches owners ways to help their dogs before and after seizures. Perhaps most importantly, however, "Canine Epilepsy" examines seizure triggers, such as diet, vaccines, and chemical use and their very clear links to brain activity.

Topics include: normal canine metabolism, digestion, and brain function. Easy-to-understand explanations of the disease processes. The effects of cortisol, the stress hormone, on seizures. Treatments: medications, diet, acupuncture, and more. Alternatives to flea and tick pesticides. Vaccines, boosters, and titres. Homemade diets vs. commercial diets. Liver, bladder, thyroid, and ophthalmic issues. How to interrupt a seizure. Seizure alerts. Caring for the dog after a seizure. Emotional support for owners. Additional resources and suppliers section.

2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-07-27

I was disappointed in the book as a whole. Coming from working at a vet clinic as a certified veterinary technician I was looking for a book to tell owners about who had epileptic dogs. I thought this book was not owner friendly and would only confuse pet owners. Having my own epileptic dog gives me insight to their concerns and fears. I think that overall this book will confuse owners and make them question their veterinarians, when they need to have complete faith that the vet is choosing the right combo for their pets. While the idea was good, I would not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-05-14

This book was very easy to read and understand. If your dog has just been diagnosed with Epilepsy this book is a good source of information to help you better understand the disease and how to deal with it.

4 out of 5 stars Canine Epilepsy.......2007-03-21

This is a very informative book, the only one on the subject I have been able to find. The initial section on diet seemed over long and complicated but the rest of the book I found very helpful. It is distressing to see your dog have a seizure but I found the content encouraging and felt comforted that the condition can be managed without resort to drugs. Some of the tips I have started to use.

5 out of 5 stars Great Help for dealing with seizures.......2007-01-09

My older dog began having seizures, other than this problem she is a healthy girl. I ordered this book when she was hospitalized for a cluster. I read the book as soon as it arrived and found it unbelievably helpful. There is life with seizures and this book helped me learn how to deal with and prevent them. Great book. Knowledge is power and I feel like I have a handle on this now.

4 out of 5 stars Canine Epilepsy.......2006-10-02

In July of 2005, we rescued two dogs that were 9 years old. They were a brother and sister team and couldn't be separated. We fell in love with them immediately. Two weeks afer bringing them home, the male began having the most intense grand mal seizures that I have ever seen. We put him on medication and it slowed the number of seizures but had no effect on the intensity.
I began looking on the internet to see what information I could find and there it was "An Owner's Guide to living with or without seizures". It took me several months to go through the book, as I found it difficult to understand the relationships between all the parts of the body, hormones, etc. However, it got me extremely interested in a natural food diet and alternative therapies.
It took another month or so to do more research and then actually put the natural food diet into place. Now, after 6 weeks of feeding natural foods to both dogs, the male has seizures that sometimes aren't recognizeable. They are mild and the duration is less than a minute.
The purpose of this narration is that if it weren't for Caroline Levin's book and love for animals, our dog would still be suffering with grand mal seizures, not to mention my husband and I and his sibling. Not only that, but their skin is so soft, whereas it was always rather brittle before.
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs help with canine epilepsy and were as frustrated as we were. Thank you so much for the time that it took you to research this disease and offer your knowledge to us. It truly was a "godsend".

Book Description

In a nation where our love of dogs keeps growing and dog ownership has reached an all-time high, confusion about dogs and their behavioral problems is skyrocketing. Many dogs are out of control, untrained, chewing up furniture, taking medication for anxiety, and biting millions of people a year.

Now, in this groundbreaking new guide, Jon Katz, a leading authority on the human-canine bond, offers a powerful and practical philosophy for living with a dog, from the moment we decide to get one to the sad day when one dies. Conventional training methods often fail dog owners, but Katz argues that we know our dogs better than anyone else possibly could, and therefore we are well suited to train them. It is imperative, he says, that we think rationally and responsibly about how we choose, train, and live with the dogs we love, and the more we learn about ourselves, the better we can recognize their wonderful animal natures. Misinterpreting dogs is a profound obstacle to understanding them.

Katz believes that both people and dogs are unique–a chow differs from a Lab just as a city dweller differs from a farmer–and he describes how such individuality isn’t addressed by even the best and most popular training methods. Not every training theory is for everyone, notes Katz, but almost anyone can train a dog and live with him comfortably. Katz on Dogs is filled with no-nonsense advice and answers to such key questions as:

• What kind of dog should I have? Is there is a specific breed or kind of dog for my personality, family, or living situation?
• What is the best way to train a dog?
• Can I trust my vet?
• How often (and for how long) can a dog be left alone?
• Is it preferable to have only one dog, or are more better?
• What are the secrets to successful housebreaking?
• What are my dogs thinking, if anything?
• How can I walk my dog instead of having her walk me?
• Is it ever okay to give away a dog you love?
• When is it time to put my dog down?

Katz draws from his own experience, his interactions with thousands of dog owners, vets, breeders, dog rescue workers, trainers, and behaviorists, and he has tested his approach with volunteer dog owners around the country. Their helpful and often inspiring stories illustrate how all of us can live well with our dogs. You can do it, Katz contends. You can live a loving and harmonious life with your dog.

4 out of 5 stars Living with dogs.......2007-10-09

The title grabbed me and the book was a great read. So many books about training and living with dogs make it hard to see how it will work for you. There are many things that pull at our time and energy so how are we suppose to fit training, walking, cleaning, feeding, medicating, and playing with our dog into family life. Each one of these areas can be researched in depth with contradictory and overwhelming points of view. This book uses the rational approach to allow you to be good enough. This may be uninspiring to others, but knowing that not all good relationships with dogs are all about the dog, inspires me to develop a realistic ongoing relationship with my dog (one that involves a flawed human and a dog). "Choosing, training, and living with dogs is not, ultimately, only a pragmatic process but a spiritual one. How much are we willing to step out of ourselves? How hard are we willing to work to show these simple but wonderful creatures how to share our lives? How much will our patience be tested and to what degree can we rise above that impatience, find the better parts of ourselves, and have the dogs we want, with the lives they deserve?" from Katz on Dogs

1 out of 5 stars Before purchasing this book.......2007-08-20

I'd recommend reading the reviews for A Good Dog. Jon Katz wrote three books about his issues with his border collies. One dog was given to another home because he couldn't cope with it, or train it appropriately; the second dog - the one he made the most money from by writing about - he euthanized because the dog's behavioral problems had become "unmanageable". Based on Katz's track record and other reviews from this book. I wouldn't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars this guy is an expert?.......2007-05-30

I find it amazing that Jon Katz is writing a book about dog training considering that he gave away one dog that he was unable to train and euthanized the other. And he makes money dispensing advice with this kind of track record?! Disgusting.

4 out of 5 stars good book for general info.......2007-05-28

I liked this book as I have liked most of the books about his dogs that Jon Katz has written.
I have trained dogs professionally for over 20 years and while I don't agree with all of the advice given in Mr. Katz's book, I don't usually agree totally with most trainers advice. I take what works for me and the dogs I train and throw the rest out. I do think that as a general guide it is well worth reading.
Jon Katz is relating his life experiences and how his relationships with his animals is making him a better person. Does he have setbacks? make mistakes? sure he does, as do we all. but unlike most of us he admits his mistakes and hopefully learns from them.

I look forward to many more books from Jon Katz.

5 out of 5 stars He has wonderful ideas.......2007-05-12

I always thought that training a dog was a one time affair. Sit, stay, come heel, good dog all done. Jon's outlook is laid back and comfortable, but he is firm in his belief that to have a good relationship with your dog, the dog must know his place within the household and that means that the dog has to undergo training on a continual basis to establish the proper dog/human hierarchy.

I have a three year old toy poodle who was never properly trained. Why teach a dog that is small enough that you can drag it around wherever you want? This is not the type of dog who will take you for a walk. Since the dog is so small the lack of training never created a real problem. However, since he wouldn't sit or stay on command that created problems because the only way this dog could get treats was to whimper. Have you ever sat through a meal with a dog constantly whimpering? So, I found myself with a dog that I didn't mind but which I thought should be somewhere else.

I read the book and I took Jon Katz's advice to heart and started training this little dog, and lord and behold, my relationship to the dog actually changed. I enjoyed having him around and he seemed to enjoy my company more because I've taught him to be less obnoxious. So far, I simply trained him to sit and stay but this changed the dog's outlook from an ambivalent relationship to a much more structured hierachy. He is probably less confused as to where he fits in the houselhold. The training was not time consuming and I try to do about 5 minutes per day to reinforce what he has already leaned. I still have a lot of training to do with him, but the little I did with him has convinced me that he can do anything (within dog reason) that I have a mind to do. The next training goal for me is to have him come when called and also to walk pleasantly with me without me having to drag him.

Great book. I bought another copy of the book for my daughter who also just got a dog.

Book Description

At last! A kids-and-dogs book for parents written by someone who "gets it."

This is a wonderful book. Useful, useful, useful information—all the main points in an extremely easy-to-read style. As a trainer and a mom, Colleen sees the full picture." — Dr. Ian Dunbar

Living with Kids and Dogs . . . Without Losing Your Mind by Colleen Pelar, CPDT, covers more than introducing a baby to the family dog. It has chapters devoted to each stage of a child's life with parental pointers for setting their family up for success while raising kids and dogs together.

~ Parenting books say control your dog; dog-training books say control your kids. The reality is far more complex and goes way beyond placing blame on either children or dogs for being who they are. ~

Living with Kids & Dogs . . . Without Losing Your Mind provides busy parents with simple, realistic advice to help ensure that the relationship between their kids and their dog is safe and enjoyable for all.

You will learn how to • Help your child and dog develop a strong relationship, built on trust and cooperation • Set your family up for success with a minimum of effort • Recognize canine stress signals and know when your dog is getting worried about normal kid activity • Identify serious behavior problems before someone gets hurt • Provide specific help for managing the interactions with dogs through each stage of your kids' lives from infancy through the teen years • Prevent your child from becoming part of a growing statistic—children who have been bitten by a dog.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book for all parents of kids & dogs!.......2007-08-14

This is one of the very best resources I've found for families with children and dogs. It has lots of practical kid-friendly and dog-friendly tips and ideas. I've recently read hundreds of books on similar topics while researching a book I'm writing, and this one really stood out. As a child/family psychologist, I was impressed with how solid it was, and as a therapy dog trainer, I thought the advice about dogs was spot-on! It deserves all the stars that everyone has given it!!

5 out of 5 stars Practical and positive!.......2007-05-30

Colleen writes in a reader friendly manner. Her life experiences as Mom and dog trainer have brought together this wonderful resourceful book families can turn to time and time again! I recommend this book to all families I work with as it describes practical and positive solutions for challenging and hectic lives! :)

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!.......2007-04-06

There are certainly other kids and dogs books out there but, this one is so far the best I've found. Colleen Pelar gives great, practical tips for parents of children at all ages that can be put to use immediately. I don't have children but, am active in rescue and am always looking for more training to help adopters and I learned so much. This book will be required reading for all adopters with children going forward. GREAT read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Finally-- a really great kids and dogs book!.......2006-04-22

Finally-- A really good book on how to live with kids and dogs. Most dog trainers don't have a lot of good things to say about kids (although I overhead one saying that she thought they tasted a lot like chicken!), but Colleen has written a book for parents by a parent who is also an excellent dog trainer. Colleen tells it like it is, from someone who knows. Her child-friendly, family-friendly and dog-friendly approach is realistic, safe, and right on the mark. I cannot say enough good things about Ms. Pelar or this book. Please read it and get a copy for your favorite family!

As the director of training for the 4th largest shelter in the country, I see every day that the consequences of people not having this information is that dogs end up in shelters. I applaud Ms. Pelar for writing it and helping keep dogs in their homes through education.

5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for any parent considering a canine addition to the family.......2005-11-11

Living with Kids and Dogs... Without Losing Your Mind is a no-nonsense advice guide for parents that emphasizes realistic and practical solutions to common parent/pet-owner problems. Dog training facility manager Colleen Pelar covers when not to get a dog (children under 5 are not old enough to interact with a pet responsibly and require supervision around animals; children in general cannot be burdened with the requirement to care for the pet or see it taken away - if the parent doesn't have the resources to follow up on a child's dog care then the family should not get a dog!), how to select an animal with suitable family temperament, how to prevent dog bites, and issues specific to children of various age groups from infant to teenager, and how to help one's children say goodbye to a beloved family pet when it passes on. Black-and-white photographs illustrate this no-nonsense, plain terms guide to dog care and managing a family with kids and dogs. A "must-have" for any parent considering a canine addition to the family.

Book Description

Living with a Black Dog is perhaps the most useful book ever created about depression. In simple text and strongly supportive illustrations, this slim volume examines, explains, and demystifies one of the most widespread and debilitating problems afflicting modern society.

Whether you've struggled with your own Black Dog for years, wondered why you're feeling sort of "ruff" lately, or known someone shadowed by a dark canine, Living with a Black Dog is for you. Artist and writer Matthew Johnstone, a depression sufferer himself, delivers a moving and uplifting insight into life with this unsavory companion. Even better, the book shows the strength and support to be found within and around us to tame this shaggy beast and ultimately bring it to heel.

Johnstone's book doesn't pretend to have all the answers. It doesn't resort to simple "dog tricks" for dealing with depression. But Living with a Black Dog does deliver understanding, hope, and the assurance that Black Dog days are not forever.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars charming book.......2007-09-17

This is one of those books that's written on 2 levels, one for older children (maybe 8yo+) with some subtleties for adult readers--i.e. a medicine bottle labeled "black dog begone." It is both informative and funny. The pictures capture what it feels like to live with depression.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-04

The message is simply, it's okay. You are just one of those with black dog - depression. You can overcome !!!

5 out of 5 stars Understanding, insight and fun.......2007-01-10

Mathew Johnstone's tiny book has captured depression with a lightness of touch that enables him to poke fun at our 'friend' whilst very much acknowledging it's power. Great to share with anyone who'd benefit from understanding the dog (who wouldn't?).

5 out of 5 stars Give this book to your friends and relatives.......2006-11-14

After investing ten minutes reading this creatively illustrated little book, your friends and relatives will at long last understand the frustrating, and at times disabling, experience with which many of us struggle. They will learn that it is nothing like just being sad, and realize it does not reflect an inherent character flaw. If you have "depression" (a woefully poor descriptor IMHO) you are already too familiar with the picture that Mr. Johnstone paints. But it is still worth reading and rereading if for no other reason than to reassure yourself that you are not alone. Ten dollars may seem $$$ for a ten minute read, but this is a profound little book that one can meditate upon for hours.

5 out of 5 stars 'Not till we are lost do we begin to find ourselves'.......2006-07-09

This is a beautiful book, worth owning for the author's illustrations alone. In 48 pages (which ends with 'The Beginning') Matthew condenses insight, advice and inspiration.

Those of us who suffer with depression will understand exactly what Matthew Johnstone is talking about, both in words and pictures. Those who do not will see a glimpse of the world through the eyes of those who live with depression.

I'm seriously considering having a copy in my office to use the illustrations as flash cards when it is just too hard to explain mood.

NOTE: The title of the book within Australia is 'I had a Black Dog'

Highly recommended.

I was freaking out when I found out my new baby(pup) is deaf. "Living With a Deaf Dog" was a life saver. I felt so more at ease after reading the first few pages. I also had family and friends that interact with Kiko read it. Kiko was my wild child and is now on her way to being a well behaved adult.

5 out of 5 stars So much help!.......2007-03-09

This book tremendously helped me understand my 3 yr. old deaf dog, Patch so much better. I didn't understand some of his behaviors and I could not find helpful books at the library. From the author's stories, tips, and advice, I have a much better understanding of what he goes through and why he exhibits some behaviors. I've had him for a year with trial especially with walking him. Since I've read this book, he and I have a much better understanding of each other. He is so willing to learn, the tips the author gave proved to be so useful! Great book! Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Understanding deafness in dogs.......2006-03-01

This book truelly provides an insight into deaf dogs and ways to assist ones communication problems. At last I have found a book that shares my awareness and provides deaf dogs with a chance in life for survival.

3 out of 5 stars Eh...kind of unnecessary........2005-10-31

If you just adopted a deaf dog, it's nice to know that there are other people who have successfully trained deaf dogs. You'll get that from this book, but otherwise this book is kind of unnessary. There are online resources to get you started with training tips (like getting a deaf dog's attention by flicking the lights). But beyond that, training is just the same as with a hearing dog. I don't want to un-recommend it, but it's just not entirely necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Living With A Deaf Dog.......2005-09-30

Great book! Full of help and hope for owners of deaf dogs. Everything is ready to use and easy to understand!

5 out of 5 stars Looking for a Pug? Get this Brits book........2003-09-04

Having met Alison a number of times both on this side of the Atlantic at the Pug Dog Club of America National Specialties as well as at seeral Crufts shows I was curious to know what her book was like so I quickly ordered it. It arrived the day my litter of one was born. Since I was up for the night anyways I settled next to the new mom and her pugette and began to read the 128 page hardcover book. Each of the ten chapters provided interesting and very valuable information for any one who is considering getting a Pug. The first chapter introduces the breed and gives a bit of history covering their Imperial heritage, their European introduction and British royalty connections. It then crosses the Atlantic to the American Pug and brings you current with names of some rich and famous people who have been Pug fanciers. All this information is pretty much the standard fare for a book on Pugs. But the second chapter is the one that really captured my attention: Choosing a Pug. this chapter is the one that will get me to recommend this book to those who are beginning their search and are wanting, or in my estimation needing, more information on the breed. Each Chapter there after: Ariving Home, Early Lessons, Caring For Your Pug and even Problem Behavior all help someone who is soon to select their future companion to learn more about what they may expect as an owner of a Pug, puppy or adult. The next three chapters address activities owners of Pugs can do with their dog including information on Canine Good Citizen, Obedience, Agility, Freestyle, Carting, Showing, Therapy dogs, and breeding. Sprinkled throughout the book are highlights focusing on some special Pugs and their owners detailing their accomplishments. The last chapter, Health Care, is written by a Veterinarian. Thre is special attention to breed-prone problems. Although Ms Moun is from England she addressed the USA Pug Fanciers interest and concerns thourghly.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any dog lover!.......2007-06-10

This book had me on the floor laughing my butt off! I have a papillon and I can all too well relate! Telling the story from the dog's point of view of her humans and her life made for a hilarious read. Once you pick up this book you won't put it down until you reach the end. Definitely a book that you can read more than once!

5 out of 5 stars Memoirs of a Papillon: The Canine Guide to Living with Humans without Going MaD.......2007-05-26

GREAT BOOK. I'm a papillon owner and a friend gave me a copy of "Genevieve's" book. I laughed till my sides ached. I read it in one
evening and then read it again. I've watched my papillons "zoom" around
the house and act just like Genevieve. I've purchased several copies to give to friends as gifts.

4 out of 5 stars Funny AND full of information.......2007-05-12

I bought this book along with a book supposedly about the breed. However, this book had more information than the other book which I returned. Not only did it have information, but it was told in such a humorous way that many times I laughed outloud.

5 out of 5 stars Genevieve is so funny!.......2006-06-13

This book was given to me by my sister. As a working mom to three papillons and foster mom for rescues, my reading time is limited. However, this book was so humorous that I just couldn't put it down. I could see my oldest pap agreeing with Genevieve many times while I read the book. I would pick out passages in the book and read them to my husband, and he would say "that is just like them".

Genevieve is a spunky little girl that doesn't take life for granted and sees humor in everything. Denny, her human translator, helps her put her thoughts into wording that anybody can understand.

This book is great.

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait to read the sequel!.......2006-01-01

This is a great book for any dog lover, and for papillon owners in particular. I felt as though I was reading about my own dog. The author captures the quirky personality traits of the papillon perfectly - I laughed through every page. This would make a great gift for those who know and love papillons.

Book Description

The pug has incomparable allure and is one of the world's ten most popular breeds. However, behind those mournful eyes lurks a mischievous fireball of a dog that has regal self-confidence. This lavishly illustrated yet amusing book is a loving exposé of all things pug—from selecting the perfect puppy to making a proper entrance at the dog show. Along the way, the book is replete with charming photos pug-lovers will take to heart as well as the history and lore behind the breed (they are aristocratic dogs with a somewhat murky past, having arrived in Europe with Genghis Khan's cavalry). No other breed of dog has been so often immortalized in paintings and photographs and in verse and prose. The notables who have been bewitched by pugs include Queen Victoria, Jackie Onassis, and Andy Warhol. Beautiful, worshipful, and useful, this coffee-table book celebrates pugs in all their cuteness.

5 out of 5 stars living with pugs.......2007-01-13

This book is a must have for all passionate pug lovers. Great photgraphs and well written and informative text, an absolute delight

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and practical.......2007-01-03

I have owned pugs for 12 years now. They are wonderful little dogs, but they do have a personality that is not for every dog owner. This book does a great job of presenting the pros and cons of pug ownership (Pugs are loyal, fun, friendly, and great companions. They are non-aggressive and get along well with other pets and family members. However, pugs shed a lot, make really funny and sometimes loud noises, aren't a dog to take jogging, and are pretty useless as guard dogs.) The photos are stunning, the information is factual and helpful if someone is trying to decide if a pug is the dog for them.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Pug Book!!!.......2006-11-16

I have many books on pugs and this is the best of them all....Very thorough info and covers just about every topic on pugs you would need. The pictures are beautiful also. It is as beautiful as a glossy coffee table book with just pictures and super informative on top of that. The best and highly recommended!!!

3 out of 5 stars learning about a ShihTzu.......2007-02-13

This book was somewhat helpful. It was interesting to know about the personality of this breed. But I have a lot of unanswered questions now that I have had the puppy for two weeks.

5 out of 5 stars Living with a Shih Tzu, your dog will love it.......2007-01-13

The book is a great manual for Shih Tzu owners. From day one it was helpful for us to understand how to handle our puppy. She is now 8 weeks old and is healthy, active, curious, mischievous and sometimes seems to have read the book before we did. The author perfectly describes the usual behavior of this breed and, best of all, she provides useful hints and instructions on how to deal with specific situations and problems such as feeding, discipline and playtime. We recommend the book with enthusiasm.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for Shih Tzu owners.......2006-11-20

As a trainer and breeder of Shih Tzu for over ten years I highly reccomend this book. It has great practical advise and is full of great pictures and stories. I give this to all my Shih Tzu puppy buyers. Enjoy your bundle of joy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Living with a Shih Tzu.......2006-07-08

As the owner of an eight week Shih Tzu, the book provided many good ideas on raising my puppy. This book was recommended by the breeder as a "how to" book.
