While the writing isn't great, the stories are certainly entertaining, and are great reading for 1st-3rd Graders. The stories follow two siblings, Jack and Annie, who are magically transported to various places, and the various settings set the stage for some very fascinating, to the young reader, tales they will come to treasure.

I've been reading to my son since he was two weeks old. He just had his fourth birthday, and I gave him this Magic Tree House box set. I thought he'd get bored pretty quick since there aren't illustrations on every page, but I was wrong. We read the first book in an afternoon, and he wanted to move straight on to the next one. We've since finished the first four and I've ordered the next box set, and while we wait we're re-reading the first four. Fantastic books!

I really enjoyed this book. It is detailed and the projects are vastly different from one another. What I also appreciated is the emphasis on doing things right, such as waiting for the concrete to set for 24 days is an example on an item. More emphasis on the internal structure using wire, rebar, etc. I would highly recommend this book and I am anxious to put into use what it taught me.

The author is very thorough on this subject and provides extensive desciptions of concrete ornament projects and concrete mixes. The only frustration I had was that in most examples a picture of the completed project was not included until the final chapter. It would have been more helpful after the description of 'how to' make the project. I think most would find this book extremely helpful by taking you from start to finished project.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

As a hobby, I enjoy capturing wild animals and putting them in cages. But I am fairly new to this hobby, so I do not own a lot of cages. This book has helped me learn how to build my own animal cages.

As a child, I enjoyed going to the zoo. But something was always missing in the zoo experience. Now that I am an adult, and capturing my own wild animals, I feel more fulfilled.

When I see an animal in a cage, it makes me feel important and powerful, especially if I'm the one who captured the animal.

This is a great book for ideas. It falls very short on important details.

This book is about building animal shelters, but none of these plans
have a listing of the parts needed. This is doubly important because
these are complicated plans. I would like to build the rabbit house,
but now I am having to approximate what I need. The author needs to
remember that someone wanting to use this book might live 20 miles away
from the hardware store.

I was looking for a book on how to build satisfactory chicken and duck housing. This book has a couple of plans for chicken coops, but not enough to buy the book. Why did I give it four stars then? Because the book is designed to give you building plans for various types of live-stock (pigs, hourses, cows, chickens, goats, rabbits, and others). The book does give you 60 plans like it says it does, but there is never more than 2 and at the most three on any specific animal.

This book does have a lot of good information in it beyond the housing plans. It has minimal spacing for your animals, safety and health of your animals, plus it has lots of good pieces of advice throughout the book that has been picked up over 30 plus years. If your like me and are looking to build housing for a specific type of live stock then this is probably not the best book for you (for chickens I would suggest "Poultry House Construction" by Michael Roberts). However, if your looking to build housing for various breeds of live-stock then this book would be a wise purchase. However, a materials list would have been nice (not enough books give them).

A little disappointing.......2007-07-16

I was a bit disappointed to find the plans in this book are USDA plans from the 1970s and were not in my view very creative or innovating or interesting. The rabbit house was just a shed of small cages, aimed at someone raising rabbits for food, I suppose, and not in any way pleasant for the rabbits.

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

Good Morning gorillas
Good Morning Gorillas is by Mary Pope Osborne. In this magic tree house book, the main Characters are Jack and Annie is in the rain forest. This book is about jack and Annie meeting a little gorilla who leads them to his family and becoming close friends. What I think the author is saying is you can become friends with animals. I can't tell my favorite part because it's the end and I don't want to give away the ending. But even though it was sad I loved it. I think it would be a good book for people who love animals.

I am not sure what else my 6 yrs old son has stayed with for so long! We read a chapter every night at bedtime. He looks forward to it every night. He has enjoyed very book and he gets excited for the next one. We are up to #26 now and he shows no sign of losing interest!

He has learned about earthquakes, Roman empire, Shakespeare, Indians, American Revolutionary war, etc.

Gorillas in the Mountains of Africa!

Good Morning Gorillas by Mary Pope Osborne is an adventurous animal fiction story. The two main characters are Jack who takes notes wherever he goes and Annie who is very adventurous in finding new friends and clues. Jack and Annie travel in the magic tree house to go to the jungle in the mountains of Africa. They are going to Africa to save gorillas from extinction. I liked this book because it is an exciting story about Jack and Annie's encounter with huge gorillas. It is a very brave and nice thing to save the gorillas because they are an endangered species. I recommend this book for all children ages nine and up. You can learn about gorillas and their suprising gentle nature. I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5.

Would you be excited if you had a tree house that could travel through time? That's what happens to 8 year-old Jack and 7 year-old Annie in the book Tigers at Twilight #19 by Mary Pope Osborne. So far this is the best book I read in the series because a tiger gets stuck in a bear trap and the kids try to rescue it. Then, the tiger is about to attack them, but I'm not saying any more. You should read the book to find out what happens.

More Quaint Than Depraved.......2007-05-03

I discovered National Lampoon in 1987, at a time when the magazine was in decline and well on its way to becoming a brand tag for C-grade movies starring Paris Hilton. But there was enough residual genius left in the magazine to change my life. That year, at age 15, I read a story by Chris Miller with the ever-subtle title of "C--k Tales." It was so fabulously wrong that I sent in my subscription card that same day.

Connoisseurs of gleeful depravity might get a chuckle or two out of this book, but it doesn't pack the same punch as his early NatLamp material. Maybe it's a matter of context -- in the '70s and '80s, d-jokes and target vomiting weren't as overmined as they are today. But compared to South Park and the amazing first "Jackass" movie, Miller's stories appear more quaint than depraved.

More Pathetic than "Depraved".......2007-04-29

The very fact that "awesomely" appears in the subtitle as if it were an acceptable adjective of the English language should have been enough to dissuade me from picking up this book. I am somewhat ashamed to admit that I compounded that error by reading the entire book.
It was not that the book is in any way compelling, fascinating, or even humorously entertaining. I continued reading it far beyond my usual tolerance for a dull narrative and poorly developed characters, and despite the persistence of the author's infantile egocentrism which, unfortunately, pervades the entire book from beginning to end.

The book recounts Miller's supposedly "depraved" college fraternity experience. Far from being "awesomely depraved," the characters mostly stand around in the fraternity house basement... talking. Miller describes this standing around talking business as wildly entertaining, something that he finds so compelling he can't wait to get back to that basement so that he can, well, stand around talking again. And again.

This standing around talking plot goes on and on, literally ad nauseum, since he also tells us how important it is to copiously vomit on demand, and how proud he was to have mastered this dubious social skill.
Miller recounts for us the thrill of drinking beer to intoxication, as if getting drunk were a wildly perverse activity that he and his band of fraternity brothers alone-unlike all the rest of the obviously sober college students the world over- had discovered, tested, and perfected for the good of all mankind.

There is nothing "depraved" here, unless your idea of depravity includes the severly upset stomachs of fledgling alcoholic narcissists so sadly dysfunctional they wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting into a good school if they had to compete with the high school class of 2007.

I suppose I kept reading because I was waiting for the turning point in which the author would describe his transition from childish egocentric to integrated human being. That payoff is never delivered and I was left to assume that Chris Miller sincerly looks back on his happy days of drunken vomiting with wistful nostalgia.

This memoir lacks even the skimpiest scrap of insight. The author never offers us even the slightest wince of regret at having spent his entire college career in what he himself describes as an intoxicted obsession with booze and... more booze.

This memoir is neither "depraved" nor the slightest bit funny. It is wiltingly sad and pathetic.
Don't waste your time.

Jovial and Depraved.......2007-03-13

Well, I certainly laughed, but I was also disgusted. This is not a book for the faint of stomach. Miller uses composite characters and features many stories that sound exaggerated, begging the question - how much of this 'real' version of the animal house saga is actually r e a l? Ultimately, it does not necessarily matter, because the content is engaging and funny either way.

As a current member of a Dartmouth fraternity I was able to relate to the setting, and some of the plot-lines This actually accounted for much of my enjoyment of the work as a whole. I would therefor note that those not connected to Dartmouth and not interested in perverse college humor should stay away (Dartmouth was the draw for me, not the perversion).

Excellent Book!.......2007-03-08

I loved this book from front to back. It is truly an amazing read; I suggest it to anybody who's looking for a good read and laugh!

Really Funny, With Broad Appeal.......2007-02-20

I strongly recommend this funny and important book. Chris Miller parts the Big Green curtain to reveal a hitherto unknown world.

This possibly true memoir recounts the 1960-61 academic year at Dartmouth College, the only Ivy League school in the woods. Popular culture was taking a breather between the Beat Generation and the Hippie era. Undergrads were not yet politicized. Female students were over a decade away. As author Miller writes, "...there was nothing to do but get drunk and break things."

Actually, there was a lot more to do as the book reveals. This is a must read for fans of

* The iconic film, "Animal House." This is Holy Scripture to that film.

* White male college behavior. Miller is the Godfather of Frat Lit.

* The memoir genre. Think "Running with Beer."

* Screenplays. "The Real Story of Animal House" demonstrates source material that one can mine for that million-dollar screenplay. Cheaper than going to a Robert McKee seminar, too.

* Understanding why your man still behaves the way he does.

This Coming of Age novel sits on my bookshelf next to "Catcher in the Rye," Kafka's "Metamorphosis," Dylan Thomas' "Adventures in the Skin Trade" and Phillip Roth's "Civilization and Its Discontents." (This last novella was expanded by Roth and renamed "Portnoy's Complaint.")

This Guide Is Worth Buying.......2007-03-14

I was a bit annoyed to open the package from Amazon and see this glorified pamphlet inside. "There goes ten bucks!" I thought. Don't let the size fool you, though. When I opened the booklet and started flipping through, I saw that it really is an excellent guide. It is far superior to anything else I have seen on the subject. I have seen bat houses for sale in my area that do not come close to meeting the well researched guidelines described in this book. Worth buying, definitely. I just wanted to combat the mosquitos in my neighborhood -- now I will likely join the Bat Conservancy and build houses for any friends who ask.

Maybe I'm too sold on what's marketed as variety.

I agree with what other reviewers have said, that these are good bathouses and the instructions are easy to follow. I just wish there were a little more variety in terms of design.

The book, by the way, over and above the houses does have some reference information on bats including where to put the houses. That was helpful.

If you're into bats, and would like to make your own houses, this is the book I would recommend.

This book is the product of years of working with expecting dog owners both to resolve child/dog issues as well as to prevent them. After speaking with one person more than I cared to that was forced into surrendering their beloved family companion because they hadn't taken measures to prevent problems I decided to put everything relevant on the subject into writing in hopes that others would not have to undergo the same ordeal.

The first section involves relationship building and the elmination of annoying behaviors that would be problematic in the presence of a young child such as counter surfing, door crashing, jumping up and so on.

Good book w/ a few great ideas.......2007-09-29

I work in a vet hospital and have trained many dogs. A lot of this book is basic dog training and should be in every home that has children. This book mostly recommends positive reinforcement but does recommend using a waterbottle and a few other ways of getting the dog's attention. However, some of the ideas towards the end were great at preparing our dogs for the upcoming baby. I just wish I'd gotten it sooner.

The Directions I Was Looking For!.......2006-12-19

I wish someone could have told me the info I really wanted begins on page 95! I have a very obedient and well trained Doberman but I KNOW the temptation baby toys are going to pose to him! I wanted a book that would tell me how to get him to "understand" what are his toys and what are not and to learn to be careful around the baby.

The fist 94 pages of the book went over what I would consider basic training that any in-house family dog would need to know. It was boring for me to read and my dog already does all of it and more. (We have even taught him the difficult, intangible command of "other". This is not in very many books because there are only a handful of dog breeds that could comprehend such a vague idea but I don't know how we would live without it! Commands like "other side", "other paw" and "other bone" are SO helpful!)

It wasn't until page 95 that I felt my $11 had been well spent. First, the author tells you to get rid of all dog toys that look like baby toys, such as plush toys, etc. Then he says to use a teensy drop of Listerine on some BABY toys and place them in a pile with dog toys and not allow your dog to touch any of the baby toys. This is very clever - the mint scent would easily designate what is the baby's and my dog would very clearly understand this. (He was recently crushed when a toy plush monkey arrived as a gift for the baby and it got put in the nursery closet instead of being given to him. I have known that when the baby is born and the monkey comes out, there is a Doberman death sentance waiting for that little chimp! The Listerine trick will work perfectly, I'm going to put a dab on the tag and add monkey to the pile of toys he's not allowed to touch!)

Next I was worried about the dog sniffing at the baby too hard and for too long. (You Doberman owners know what I am talking about - they can really shove that slender nose into you!) The book, like other websites I have seen, mentions you should carry around a baby doll wrapped in a baby blanket and train the dog to not go near where you set the baby down. The author encourages as much realism as possible.

In addition to this, the author gives very good reasons why the dog should not be allowed anywhere near where you feed the baby or around the high chair. Yes, I am looking forward to having my dog do most of the food pick-up off the floor, but he is only allowed to do that AFTER everyone eats. While you are all eating, the dog must stay far back so that he doesn't view the child as a source of food and steal snacks from him later. (I KNOW my dog would do this because I have seen him weasel goldfish crackers out of neighbor children's hands while they were standing in curious silence, in awe of his licking their hands.)

We have already been practicing not letting the dog into the baby's room, as the author suggests, mostly to avoid getting dog hair on all the new baby stuff! We will continue this practice and make sure he understands he's not to ever enter without us. (The author promises this will be handy some day when the child is rolling on the floor, either laughing or screaming in a temper tantrum, and the dog wants to play "the new game".)

This book DID have the information I was looking for at the end of the book and I am happy that I bought it. I think this book has the potential to be the ONLY dog training book you need if you are getting a dog and will some day add a baby. The steps you are given are very easy to do and will be fun for you both!

Not bad, Tons of Information.......2006-08-18

I did like this book, it was not bad at all. There is tons of information that has been somewhat helpful. I am 8 months pregnant and trying to help my dog get adjusted before the baby arrives. So, I am following some of the tips that the trainer gave and we will see what happens next month...

Great dog training book, baby or not.......2005-08-30

The Doggie 12-Step Program in this book is one of the most effective, easy to understand, and easy to implement, training tools I have come across. I have a rescue dog that I was too soft on at first because of his fearful nature. I am now trying to definitively establish myself as "alpha" and the 12-steps are working fabulously. It's a simple outline, yet enough theory is offered for every step so if the situation doesn't totally apply you can come up with some modified version for each step and have a variety of exercises to work with to establish your role as pack leader. I've purchased a zillion books for my messed-up dog and this is far and above the most useful.

This book may save your dog's life.......2005-08-27

The behavior you tolerate from your dog before your baby is born may become intolerable after your baby is born. Does your dog sleep on your bed? Bark at passerbys? Run through the house? Beg for food? Pull on the leash? Refuse to come at the park when he finds something more interesting than you? Each of these behaviors take on a whole new dimension when you have a baby in the house.

Imagine cuddling in bed with your sleeping baby only to have your dog jump on the bed and start rolling around. Imagine spending an hour getting your baby to fall asleep only to have him awoken by your dog barking at your neighbor's cat walking down the sidewalk. Imagine your dog barreling through the house while your little one is toddling about. Imagine walking down the street with your baby in your arms or in a stroller and having your dog pull you all over the place. This is not a pretty place to be. You love your dog. But you will love your baby more. If you don't have a baby yet, it is hard to imagine loving anyone more than you love your dog. But, it happens. And, you will grow to resent your dog when he/she interferes with the quality of your baby's life. I know because I have three dogs and a ten month old baby.

Wombacher's book has restored sanity in our lives and taught us how ALL of us (my husband and me, our baby, and our dogs) could co-exist in a way that works for everyone. In particular, if you follow his Doggie Twelve-Step Program you will effectively teach your dog that you are in control, not him/her. You will be able to keep your dog quiet while your baby is sleeping. You will be able to take your baby AND your dog for a walk. You will be able to have your dog in the same room as your baby without worrying about your dog running your baby over.

Some other reviewers have objected to Wombacher's advice because he suggests the use of some aversives like a squirt bottle. If you are lucky enough to have a dog who responds to positive reinforcement only, lucky you! But, not all dogs are so compliant. I learned this the hard way with my dog who became more and more dominant and headstrong despite endless "good boys" and treats. Positive reinforcement is great for teaching the nuts and bolts of obedience, but it doesn't allow you to exert control over a dominant dog. I worked at a humane society that only employed positive reinforcement techniques. Unfortunately, I watched several beautiful, intelligent, fun-loving dogs get euthanized because they were out of control and positive-reinforcement-only training didn't address their underlying dominance issues. They could sit, down, stay, shake hands, and speak on command; but when it came to barking or chasing squirrels or resource guarding, the positive-reinforcement folks failed and the dogs were euthanized for being "unadoptable." I realized that I would rather squirt my dog with a spray bottle and put a citronella bark collar on him than have to take him to the vet to be euthanized after he hurt my child.

A must for anyone with a baby (or a baby on the way)!
