4 out of 5 stars Nice Origami book........2007-01-11

Lang's book on Origami is a good buy for anyone interested in this ancient art of paper folding. It covers models that are simple to fold all the way to models that require more skill. It also includes quite a large variety of animals to explore.

4 out of 5 stars A great book full of variety!!.......2006-08-04

This is the first origami book I have bought,Origami Zoo. Before I got this book I had to print heaps of stuff off the internet, and before long I had a huge collection of stuff I put in a folder. I soon found out that all the models I had printed out were way too hard for me, even though I'm around the intermediate to advanced level!! As cool as they may sound, the Biplane always confused me, the Bee always ripped and the Alien always became too small and thick.
But then I discovered Amazon.com. Here there were millions of choices of origami books, but I chose to get "Origami Zoo, an Amazing Collection of folded paper animals." This book was at my level exactly!!
My fav models are, so far:
- The Penguin. Even though this is one of the easiest, it still looks lifelike side-on.
- The Owl. This model is also 2D, but it perches on a thin rod, and looks lifelike as well.
- The Duck. This model is a particularly cute 3D one!
- The Sea Turtle. This model is both fun to make and cool to look at!!
- The Fox. This model is rather easy, 3D, and lifelike!
None of the models in this book are very easy. Most of them are at the intermediate level, but the last 10 or so models are complex. I still haven't gotten to the real complex models yet, but when I do, I hope I have a lot of large origami paper on hand!!
This book contains info at the start, about folds, paper, designing models and so on.
I would recommend this book to people who like to make a variety of animals, not just plain four legged animals, but insects and sea creatures as well!!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of animals - Intermediate to Advanced.......2005-08-21

There is a great selection of animals to make in this book. Some are very advanced and complicated. Others are easier and more familiar. If you are a beginner, but are familiar with folds and instructions, it is worth giving it a try for a challenge.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute excellence... Don't Miss!.......2003-07-02

Even though the final models are *extremely* complex, the book begins with very interesting texts about origami origins, evolution and approaches to creation; and the models go in progression from the very simplest ones. So actually this is an excellent "transition" book - if you have some experience with origami and have the ambition to try more complex stuff, there cannot be a better book than this one to guide you. The diagrams are crystal clear, and so are the indications. I got this book when I was 11 (I'm 24 now), and it is still every bit as amazing an enjoyable as back then!!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY Awesome...but CHALLENGING!!!!.......2003-04-19

Origami Zoo is yet another book my boys and I got from our local library. This book is by two of the BEST Origamists around, in our humble opinion.
We will be watching for it on ebay. While we are all beginner/intermediate folders, we are AMAZED by this book. There is nothing in it we don't like, but only a couple so far we've been able to figure out. It is WELL written. All the basic folds one needs, are clearly shown and explained at the front. While it has black and white illustrations, they are fairly easy to follow, and the written instructions are very good, IF you already know something about Origami. There are very nice & clear pictures at the beginning of each model, to show you how it looks, finished. I like that.
If you are intermediate to advanced, I would say this book will keep you busy for MONTHS, maybe years.
FUN, EXCITING, "CHALLENGING" ! I can't wait to get past the cool Dolphin, which I got pretty quick. If you are just starting out, don't be like us, find an easier book to begin with. Highly recommended!!

Book Description

More than a half-century ago the Canadian Wildlife Service assigned the naturalist Farley Mowat to investigate why wolves were killing arctic caribou. Mowat's account of the summer he lived in the frozen tundra alone-studying the wolf population and developing a deep affection for the wolves (who were of no threat to caribou or man) and for a friendly Inuit tribe known as the Ihalmiut ("People of the Deer")-is a work that has become cherished by generations of readers, an indelible record of the myths and magic of wild wolves.

4 out of 5 stars Slapstick Adventure.......2007-09-18

This classic defense of wolves never strays into preaching; it makes its points through slapstick adventure. A hapless young biologist named Farley Mowat gets shipped off into the bush by the Canadian government and instructed to conduct meticulous observations of wolves. He is to disembowel a lot of wolves and prove that the ravening beasts are decimating the caribou. Instead, the wolves disprove his assumptions at every turn. He becomes an ardent fan of their family life, sense of humor, restraint, and good nature. He decides to skip the disemboweling. An Eskimo named Ootek helps to illuminate wolf nature and plays the wise straight red man to Mowat's buffoon. Mowat hides under his canoe from wolves that turn out to be huskies; he ogles a she-wolf he has christened Angeline. Some of his antics could come right out of a Chaplin movie. Perhaps Chaplin should have done a movie in the far north not about Gold Rush prospectors who eat shoes, but about wildlife biologists who eat creamed mice to test their nutritional value. In one scene, Mowat jumps up naked from sunbathing to run off after a pack of wolves in hopes of observing a caribou hunt. When the wolves ignore the caribou, Mowat runs at the pack, swearing, in frustration. An Eskimo lad tells his mother, who never speaks to the mad white nudist again.

This nature writing does not sing. It is not meant to. When Mowat mentions the tundra plains around him, he calls them dreary. Nor does he praise the wolves' appearance much. What's more, enough experts have questioned the veracity of his observations that Barry Lopez labels Never Cry Wolf a "fictionalized account" in his book Of Wolves and Men. Yet Lopez still recommends Never Cry Wolf as an introduction to the species. The truth is that the book doesn't need beauty or literal truth to draw us closer to nature. Through Mowat's stories, we come to share his affinity for wolves, and we understand the hunger for connection that propels his scientific curiosity.

5 out of 5 stars Never Cry Wolf .......2007-09-09

Very interesting read about the study of wolves. Farley is also a very amuzing writer which makes the subject matter easier to read. If you are a Wildlife lover, this is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Wolf Lovers.......2007-04-13

I am blessed to be the "Mom" of 2 wolf mix rescues and am a volunteer at a wolf preserve. This book accurately describes his experiences with wolves in a humorous yet realistic way. The author honestly describes the problems with the human factor in the wolf world through his adventures as a biologist working for the government of Canada.

5 out of 5 stars Never Cry Wolf.......2007-01-20

I did not see the condition of the book as it was a gift for my nephew. I have read several of Farley's books and loved them. I have not read this one his most recognized title as I wantd to read those I had never heard about or saw the movie. I can only trust that it is great, as are his other books that were not made into movies.

5 out of 5 stars Should be read by every person alive........2007-01-11

This book is breathtaking in its scope and majesty... Or perhaps that is just the wolves the author is describing. Whoever has any doubts at all about the wolves should be blown away by this gripping and revealing book.

Do not, I repeat DO NOT mistake this book for fiction. It is nonfiction, and though many bookstores and libraries mistake it for fiction, it is pure, cold, truth.

Read it. Period.

5 out of 5 stars very nice book to teach about airplanes.......2007-02-12

My 36 mo old daughter has loved airplanes since the first day she went onto one. I think by now she must have been on one 22 times as we go back and forth between the caribbean, North America and Europe. I bought 2 books to help her understand more about them, and to add variety to her library at home. It's a very good book for both boys and girls.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for young airplane lovers!.......2006-07-08

My 14-month old son absolutely loves this book, and I have to admit that I do, too. The text is well-written and rhymes, with a nice cadence to it that is fun to read, even after you've read it three times in a row! The book explains how you travel by airplane -- packing your bag, going to the terminal, checking in, getting on board, etc. It even (briefly and simply) tells how airplanes fly. The illustrations are bright and colourful, and the story really feeds a little one's excitement about going on a flight. If your child (age 6 or less, I'd guess) is interested in airplanes, or if you are planning to travel on one, I would highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2006-11-11

The best way to expose your child to reading. My daughter reads a couple books on most nights and she has improved dramatically over the past months. She enjoys reading the stories and putting a sticker on each time she does. Every parent that cares about education should get these books for their kids.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for young readers!.......2006-08-07

I bought this for my 4 yr old after having used the first two sets of Bob Books (scholastic). Now I'm Reading!: Amazing Animals is an excellent next step! Amazing Animals introduces long vowel sounds and vowel pairs (digraphs) in managable chunks.

This set is great for kids who are intimidated by the usual graded learning-to-read books (like Danny and the Dinosaur) or books which rely on the repitition of longer sight words.

Younger readers benefit from these short funny texts with lots of words worthy of sounding out. The illustrations and vibrant colors have kept my dughter enthused through out.

Young children can learn to read too with patience and these great books.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful readers for your child!.......2006-07-07

I love the packaging, which makes it easy to store. I love the building on levels in reading. I love the list of skills in each story, the questions for after reading, the parent guide and the reward system.

I bought all three levels and my child loves these! She feels as if she's growing as a reader as we go through each book and works hard to read fluidly and with the correct pronunciation in order to get her "mastered" sticker. I cannot recommend these high enough.

We're homeschooling and used these for K-First Grade level. I will use these for my son as well when he gets older!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Phonetic Frolics.......2006-02-21

This set of books was recommended to me by reading specialists. They love them, I love them, and my students love them! There are good colorful pictures of the action going on. The text builds with repetition, and there are solid, funny story lines to build from after reading. Each book has a focus, such as short vowel sounds.

5 out of 5 stars A Once Frustrated Now Happy Mom.......2006-02-01

My daughter used to really fight with me about reading. She resisted all attempts on my part to encourage and work with her and she was falling behind in school. These books were the solution to our problems. She absolutely loves them and is the one asking to read now. She loves the pictures and the stories. The stories are just the right length and have just the right number of words per page to keep here interested and make her feel like she is making real progress. In just a couple of months she went from being behind her peers in reading to being right where she should be. Her progress has been staggering. I highly recommend these books to anyone with a beginning reader, particularly one who is having trouble getting interested in reading.

5 out of 5 stars Sparks Interest in Octopuses at Young Ages.......2006-09-14

I checked this book out for my 4 year old (and 2 year old twins) since our booklist recommended it for studying the letter "o". We thought it was interesting and fabulous. We enjoyed the illustrations and the facts. We happened to have also checked out an octopus puppet with which we made up our own stories based on the facts we learned from the book. I found it interesting enough that I guess I hadn't realized that there wasn't a plot. I guess fact is better than fiction!

5 out of 5 stars Octopus's Garden.......2005-07-21

I liked this book because I learned alot of facts. The pictures were really cool and I liked learning how they disguise themselves and how the mother octopus lays here eggs near her den where she can watch them. It is sad because she dies after the babies hatch. I recommmend this book for all ages.

3 out of 5 stars some amazing facts, but visually dull........2000-09-30

Lauber's _An Octopus is Amazing_ is a decent introductory book on the topic, probably best suited to children aged 4-8. There are no photographs. The book is illustrated on each page with color drawings. The drawing on the book cover is indicative of the quality of the drawings throughout. It's a bit cartoonish.

There is little organization to the subject matter. Instead, the author just presents one (probably "amazing") fact after another, such as: octopuses change color, octopuses can lay 200,000 eggs, etc.

I think most children, if given the opportunity to pick another book on the subject, might not choose this one, simply because there are no color photographs. Still, it's a decent guide to the subject for young readers and the even younger read-to children. The amazing facts in this book just might prompt them to seek out other octopus books. That wouldn't be so very amazing.

Can Pearl, a pig, and her new frined, a small talking bone, outwit a band of robbers and a hungry fox?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, and no less so for being a bit strange.......2007-08-24

Our two children, ages 3 and 6-1/2, absolutely LOVE this story, and we love reading it to them, as it is a very fun book to read aloud. I suppose it contains some edgy elements for a children's book: violence is threatened several times, and Pearl (the darling protagonist/pig) is almost eaten by a fox -- but is this any more violent than, say, The Three Little Pigs? As William Steig says several times in this beautiful, enjoyable tale, "I didn't make the world." That being said, I suppose this story isn't for everyone, and I wouldn't recommend it for children who are especially young or easily scared, but having read a TON of children's book over the last six years, this is one of the few for which I've been moved to write a recommendation. Honestly, just hearing my kids running around exclaiming "Have you no shame, Sir?!" to each other (and everyone else) and then bursting into giggles was worth any talk explaining why foxes want to eat pigs. I'd give it six stars if I could, but then, I didn't make the world.

2 out of 5 stars Parents - review this one carefully before buying.......2007-08-07

This book horrified me. Maybe it's no worse than Hansel and Gretel, but between the awful attempted robbery, the abduction and the graphic description of the fox planning to cook and eat the sweet heroine --- YIKES. I wouldn't want to read this to my daughter. If you're a Steig fan, be sure to look this one over and decide for yourself if it's right for your child prior to buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Steig's Amazing Bone.......2006-11-06

2 out of 5 stars It Would Be Amusing to Gnaw on a Bone That Talks...and Screams With Pain.......2006-09-05

These words are spoken by a fox, one of the villains of this book, to a talking bone, one of the heroes. The bone is not inanimate - it is a sentient creature with feelings and a sweet disposition.

There is no doubt that Steig is brilliant, but in The Amazing Bone he seems to have lost his bearings. How can a book purportedly written for children include a character that takes pleasure from inflicting pain, and describes it in this graphic way?

The fox also menaces Pearl, a darling piglet who is the other protagonist of the book. Her trouble starts, as it might for any child, as follows: "It was a brilliant day, and instead of going straight home from school, Pearl dawdled".

As she slowly makes her way home through idyllic scenery, Pearl happens upon the talking bone. "'May I take you home with me, wonderful bone?' Pearl asked".

But the happy scene is soon interrupted by three masked robbers who put a gun to the head of the innocent child. With the help of the bone Pearl escapes, only to fall into the clutches of the even more sinister fox. The shocking threat of torture follows as the valiant bone tries to rescue its new friend for a second time.

"When they arrived at the fox's hideaway, he shoved Pearl into and empty room and locked the door". While there are many such scenes in the Little Red Riding Hood genre of fairy tale, there is something particularly violent and dark in Stieg's portrayal. The image of Pearl cowering on the floor of the locked room awaiting her fate is disturbing to the extreme.

Notwithstanding a happy ending it's clear that this book can't be recommended for children, and that it isn't intended for adults. This being the case it is surprising that in 1977 it was recognized by the American Library Association as a Caldecott Honor Book. Certainly Steig's artful and evocative illustrations are remarkable, but should not have been sufficient, in and of themselves, for the conferring of this prestigious award.

2 out of 5 stars It was okay.......2007-02-16

I didn't realize when I bought this that it is not really an adult-geared book. The stories are very short and written in very elementary terms, apparently targeted at children. Left me wanting more information about the animals.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Give Up.......2007-01-19

If only I had a zillion dollars, I'd adopt every animal in a shelter. These animals definitely received a second chance and they proved they were totally worth it. This was a cheering book, even though one knows there are many more animals waiting to be given that second chance. Read the book and be amazed.

Shelter Dogs

The book is about dogs getting adopted. The dogs did amazing things. One dog almost died but a word saved his life. One other dog was a champion that nobody wanted. Everyone should read this book because it is interesting, amazing, and has weird things.
You can relate to being rescued in shelter dogs. 2 people were deaf, had a fire, and the dog saved them. Every time before the person had a seizure the dog barked. A dog helped another dog that was blind. A dog was house trained to help someone.
You can relate to the characters in Shelter Dogs. The characters have problems. The dogs try helping the problems. There is one who helped with seizures. Most families were happy with their dog.
It takes you to different places in Shelter Dogs. In the Humane Society is where the dogs were. Some dogs were brought back here. In houses where dogs went when adopted. Some were adopted by Human Society.
Overall this book was a great book. I would rate it an 8. You can relate to the most of the dogs. I learned a lot from this book. I hope you will learn lots from this book too.

Book Description

Winner of the 2001 Carnegie Medal

One rat, popping up here and there, squeaking loudly, and taking a bath in the cream, could be a plague all by himself. After a few days of this, it was amazing how glad people were to see the kid with his magical rat pipe. And they were amazing when the rats followed hint out of town.

They'd have been really amazed if they'd ever found out that the rats and the piper met up with a cat somewhere outside of town and solemnly counted out the money.

The Amazing Maurice runs the perfect Pied Piper scam. This streetwise alley cat knows the value of cold, hard cash and can talk his way into and out of anything. But when Maurice and his cohorts decide to con the town of Bad Blinitz, it will take more than fast talking to survive the danger that awaits. For this is a town where food is scarce and rats are hated, where cellars are lined with deadly traps, and where a terrifying evil lurks beneath the hunger-stricken streets....

Set in Terry Pratchett's widely popular Discworld, this masterfully crafted, gripping read is both compelling and funny. When one of the world's most acclaimed fantasy writers turns a classic fairy tale on its head, no one will ever look at the Pied Piper -- or rats -- the same way again!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Is this book really for kids?.......2007-07-05

I found this book to be immensely entertaining. Despite relatively clean jokes, this doesn't really seem all that different from the rest of the Discworld series, in terms of reading difficulty. However, I imagine I might say otherwise, were I still in elementary school.

5 out of 5 stars Pratchett.......2007-06-14

What can I say, it is Terry Pratchett. As with all things written or produced by this strange man: It is outstanding.

3 out of 5 stars Not for kiddies.......2006-12-27

I read this when it came out, thinking that perhaps it might be OK to share with my children. Note, please, that it was not marketed or labeled as young adult fiction when I bought it. I found it to be one of the darkest and least funny of the discworld novels, and not at all appropriate for my kids at that time. I didn't think about it again until, to my horror, my sister-in-law gave a copy to my ten-year-old son. My thirteen-year-old might be OK with the cruelty, starvation, cannibalism, animal pit-fighting, and so forth, but not the 10-year-old. This book is deep Pratchet, and as such, not for children. I was appalled to see that it is now being sold as a children's book. I would never offer this book to someone in middle school or younger unless I knew him and his reading level very well.

5 out of 5 stars Genuine Pratchett for the younger reader.......2006-11-04

Pratchett keeps his keen edge when writing for a young audience. In this book he's created characters who are relatively complex people trying to shape a society and find meaning in their lives, and oh yeah, they happen to be a colony of rats, led by an alley cat with con-man tendencies. The book is imaginative and engaging, with an adventurous and sometimes creepy story line. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Hey you . . . stupid looking kid . . . .......2006-10-15

Maurice is a great character, exactly what a talking cat would be like. The story is an interesting spin on the story of the piper who plays the rats out of town that is set in Discworld. The story has the wit and humor that all of Terry Pratchett's books have. A really enjoyable read for kid and adult fans of Terry Pratchett. It also has a good moral about working together to solve problems, but really you could ignore that if you wanted . . .

Book Description

Rockets have power. They rise and roar. This rocket's waiting, ready to soar. Rockets carry astronauts with cool, white suits oxygen helmets and gravity boots. Blast off with more out-of-this-world couplets! This time it is machines that fly. In bright and bold illustrations that are as witty as the text, the animal crew roars and whizzes into outer space.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars my 2 yo enjoys it.......2007-08-17

My son loves the animals on the rocket as much as he loves reading about the rocket. It's short and sweet and introduces him to some new space travel concepts (like wearing oxygen).

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Fun.......2007-03-25

Great book to add into the night reading routine. I like to read a few books each night and this one is a perfect short read. Great rhymes and simple illustrations- my son enjoys this book very much.

5 out of 5 stars we are really enjoying this series.......2005-09-12

our 2 1/2 year old son is realy enjoying the whole "amazing machines" series. i like them too. they are fun, and the rhymes are clever.

4 out of 5 stars 3 year old loves it.......2004-10-19

Using simple language and cute rhymes, this book gives an wonderful and accurate description of an Apollo moon mission. My 3 year old loves it.

4 out of 5 stars Big, Fun Illustrations.......2000-11-11

Just got this fron Scholastic Books for our three-year old. The colorful illustrations are fun and prompt him to ask lots of questions about space travel. "Why is that thing flying off the end of the rocket?" "Why is that guy floating?" "Why are they in the water?" Yesterday we created a space suit for him, today we made a rocket. Who knows...tomorrow, the moon?

Warning for parents: the text rhymes and is pretty hokey: "Rockets take astronauts out to a place/that's strange and wonderful: silent space..."

Tremendous Tractors tell about all of the jobs that a tractor can do. We learn that it is used to plow fields, cuts grass, bales hay and lots more. The famers in ths book are all colorful animals!

The pictures are very colorful. In back in has a page where it explains tractors parts if you are not familiar
With some of the words used in the book.

I would recommed this book to children ages 4-7. Lots of kids like to read about things on the farm.
