Book Description

TAILS OF DEVOTION A Look At The Bond Between People And Their Pets is a coffee table book of letters and photographs of 58 San Franciscan families and their beloved pets -- a visual and profound testimony to the very special relationship between pets and their families. The book presents an interesting dialogue between owner and pet, and vice-versa, through a series of letters that answer the question: "If you and your animals could communicate via paper, what would you say to each other?"

Amy Tan writes a very personal foreword detailing her relationship with her animals as well as an ode to our pets. Luminaries such as Robin Williams, Isabel Allende, Peter Coyote, Ronnie Lott, Mickey Hart, Michael Chabon, Ayelet Waldman, Orlando Cepeda, Michael Tilson Thomas and Stephan Jenkins open the doors to their home life because of their love of animals and desire to help others who care about the animals.

The humans may vary, the non-humans may vary, the handwritten notes may vary but the message is clear - we love our animals, they are members of our family.

And, outside of the family unit, we have found that these animals are uniters of people not dividers. Anyone who has ever had a family pet will find kindred spirits in the letters and photos.

100% of the gross proceeds from TAILS will go to The San Francisco SPCA, the Friends of San Francisco Animal Care and Control, PAWS (Pets are Wonderful Support), Pets Unlimited and Rocket Dog Rescue. Each of these non-profit organizations is profiled in the book with their mission and work.

It's a fun book to have - a coffeetable book. I purchased it as a holiday present. I may end of keeping it and purchase another for the holidays!

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for Such a Great and Generous Show of Love for Animals.......2007-04-03

I just ordered this book after seeing Emily Scott Pottruck being interviewed on a local TV news program. I also ordered copies for two friends who I share a special bond with as we volunteered at the Michigan Humane Society together. I understand that some people think too much attention is given to animals when there is so much human suffering in the world. To them I would say that our pets give us unconditional love, which is a very rare gift. My 26 year old son died suddenly in June of '06 and I know I could not have made it this far without the companionship of my beloved beagle, Piccolo. She always senses my moods and is ready to give me extra cuddles whenever I need them. I think I am a kinder, stronger, and better person because of her.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading For Any Pet Owner.......2007-01-30

Tails of Devotion is more than just a coffee table book. This book does what few books on animals manage to do, which is to attempt to raise the level of human consciousness about the necessity for relationships with companion animals and the sacredness of those bonds. At a time when companion animals are still largely regarded as "property" by many, this book will add to the growing understanding of the need to treat companion animals as valued members of our extended human family.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Gift Item.......2007-01-19

I gave this book as a gift to a friend who is a true animal lover. She absolutely fell in love with the book. Some beautiful stories of people and their love for their animals. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Our 'Book of the Year' Choice!.......2006-12-21

Emily Scott Pottruck brings the unique relationship that exists between pets and their people to glorious life in this beautifully written and illustrated book. 'Tails of Devotion' proves that the love which is shared between people and their pets crosses all social boundaries, and unites us all in a way that few other loves could ever accomplish.

The life-affirming story of Elizabeth, a homeless woman living in the Bay Area along with her faithful companion, Hero, alone is worth the price of this lovely book!

In addition, Emily Scott Pottruck is generously donating 100% of the proceeds from 'Tails of Devotion' to non-profit animal welfare groups! So, along with receiving this beautiful book (which you will treasure for years to come!), you will also have the wonderful feeling that comes with knowing that your purchase has enabled animal welfare organizations to continue their work to help less fortunate animals.

'Tails of Devotion' will make a wonderful gift for anyone who has ever known the joy of loving ... and being loved by ... a beloved animal companion.

Book Description

Treating animals just as any healer would treat human beings, Allen Schoen has become one of America’s most celebrated veterinarians. Kindred Spirits shares the transformative power of his remarkable methods, explores how alternative healing is revolutionizing his profession, and, in the tradition of James Herriot, shares heartwarming stories of animals and their caretakers who have deeply enriched each other’s lives. Through moving scenes–such as an ailing German shepherd who fights to stay alive so he can assist and comfort his ailing human companion–Schoen details the ways in which the human-animal bond can provide a wellspring of love and support, and outlines his own special prescription for improving the care we give our animals through adopting simple healing practices at home. A remarkable new synthesis of science and spirit, Kindred Spirits at last reveals the many ways our animal friends can help us lead happier, healthier, more fulfilling lives.

5 out of 5 stars A must read by everyone.......2007-02-16

So you think you know and understand your pets, especially dogs? Not until you read this wonderful and insightful book can one begin to understand the exceptional love and experiences that dogs bring into our lives. This should be required reading in schools!!!

4 out of 5 stars The World Needs More Dr. Schoens.......2006-06-13

This book is a great primer for people who have an inkling that our relationship with animals runs deep and is often spiritual or even mystical.

Dr. Schoen has given us a one-stop shopping source, with introductions to: alternative medicine for animals, alternatives to commercial pet food, and ways to enrich the human-animal bond through touch, massage, and meditation.

Buy it as a gift for someone whose eyes are opening to the reality that we are all connected and responsible for each other.

4 out of 5 stars For Animal Lovers.......2005-08-04

Allen M. Schoen, D.V.M., M.S., author of "Kindred Spirits" has written a sensitive book that pulled me in from the beginning. I have to confess that I am a person who feels more in touch with animals than than I do with most people. I have enjoyed reading this book so far and would recommend it to any adult who enjoys understanding the complex relationship between man and the animals around us. It is easy to read and full of wonderful anecdotes from the author's experience as a vet.

2 out of 5 stars Dubious information, egotistical tone.......2004-07-08

Dr. Schoen never met a form of "alternative" therapy that he didn't like. I'm all in favor of keeping an open mind and exploring non-traditional forms of healing. On the other hand, I think that your mind shouldn't be so open that your brain falls out. Extraordinary claims should require extraordinary evidence.

Just once, I'd like to hear Dr. Schoen say, "This form of therapy is complete clap-trap. I don't think it works, and it might even be harmful". Instead, Dr. Schoen embraces everything from acupuncture, to Chinese herbs, and all things in between.

And on top of that, the author's tone is one of self-aggrandizement and condescension toward his "less-enlightened" colleagues.

I'm a life-long animal lover and pet owner. I volunteer at the local animal shelter. I really disliked this book.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2003-04-03

This is a wonderful publication on a meaningful subject. I didn't read the book but ordered the abridged cassette tapes. All animal lovers should know about this book or tape and read or listen. Truly one that you'll be glad you bought.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great information and very moving stories........2007-07-15

This was a great book with a great deal of useful information. My only caution is that you need a box of Kleenex when you read some sections...it is very moving. This book gives great insight into how a well trained dog can help with an Autistic child. It also gives useful information on how to train a dog to work with an autistic child but it is not a do it yourself book...professional help is needed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-05-15

I bought this book to help guide us through the process of possibly getting a dog to help our 4-year old son w/ autism. What I found is that this book is so beautifully written, touching on the very essence of living in a family with a child who has a disability. It's inspirational, heart-breakingly true, yet heart-warming and realistic. I highly recommend it for all parents or older siblings of family members with autism.

5 out of 5 stars A Thoughtful Approach to Integrating Animals in the Lives of Special Needs Children.......2007-03-25

A thoughtful exploration of the benefits and challenges in the intergration of assistance dogs for children living with autism. I have worked with Patty over the last six months and have been impressed with her understanding of the necessary steps to help build a healthy relationship among children and their canine friend.

Soul Friends: Finding Healing With Animals

5 out of 5 stars A Visionary Book..........2007-02-20

I just finished reading The Golden Bridge and wanted to put in a few words while it's still fresh. I feel this book is a great success on many different levels. Author Patty Dobbs Gross is clearly an expert in the areas of service dogs, including breeding, training, and raising. And her knowledge is supplemented by contributing authors that offer sections of expertise on various particulars regarding the use of service dogs.
The volume of useful information to be found in this book was extremely rewarding, but in addition to the usefulness of that, I was incredibly moved by her own personal story, which is woven through the book. Through her prose, she tells her own story of struggle, which slowly grows into finding her unique and special path. Her strength of character and resolve shine as beacons to those of us finding our own paths in life. Gross's determination to create something good out of the challenges that faced her and her family, and to succeed so well at it, is truly inspiring.
Ms. Gross, in telling her personal story, paints a very vivid and moving picture and writes in a very compelling way. I was totally drawn in, and literally didn't put the book down until I finished the last page.
I highly recommend this book for it's informative aspect, it's emotionally appealing story, and it's vision.

This is the BEST text I could ever hope to read! I am a nurse and a pet owner with cancer (and I was in crisis with "what to do" issues for my sweet cat). After reading it, I sent it to my colleagues and their response was identical to mine. Best features: compassionate care of pets with cancer; definitions of complex medical conditions/treatments in easy to understand terms; assistance with difficult decision-making from diagnosis to dealing with end of life issues; honoring the intense loving connection of humans to their companion pet family and much more. Professionals caring for humans should also use this text as a "model" for humane and compassionate care. You will cry, learn, feel supported and informed. You will want to give it to everyone you know.....I did.

    Book Description

Falling into that irresistible category of things we probably don't want to know, here is an up-close, personal look at insects as you've never seen them before. Striking a balance between the bizarre and the beautiful, Buzz features eye-popping and considerably larger-than-life electron microscope photographs that take us deep into the world of the buzzing, hopping, and crawling critters who live among us -- from the ants and wasps we thought we knew to dozens of other teeny-tiny creatures that teem beneath our notice. A lively and accessible text by Discover editor Josie Glausiusz explores the fascinating interactions of insects in a man-made world, and profiles of each insect introduce the workaday bugs that pollinate our crops, dispose of our trash, help solve crimes, and get stuck to the windshield. Readers be warned: You'll never look at your food, or your pillow, quite the same way again.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Delicious Shiver.......2004-05-29

This book reminds us we needn't invent science ficiton aliens to horrify and delight the human imagination. Every page of BUZZ provides that "sweet sensation of horror," that "shivery fascination with monsters" that so delights the likes of sociobiologist E.O. Wilson, who has made his famous career studying ants. And ants are in here, as well as flies, spiders, beetles, wasps and scores of other impossibly strange, fascinating invertebrates. They are grouped in this book because this "alien" universe is our own. All of these creatures live around, and sometimes right ON us.
For which we should rejoice, as the author, Discover editor Josie Glausiusz, eloquently reminds us. Without many of these insects, our beautiful green world would be impossible for us to inhabit. Insects pollinate our crops, feed everyone from birds to fish (and even us), recycle the bodies of the dead and the excreta of the living. They give us honey, beeswax, silk, and the stunning delights of butterfly wings and cricket song. And they have stirred human imaginations for millennia, the muse inspiring great works in every sort of art, from Biblical passages on mosquitoes and ants to Rimsky-Korsakov's dazzling "The Flight of the Bumblebee."
Bugs are good. Of the estimated 9 million species, we learn, only perhaps 1.5 percent of them cause us any problems. Granted, that small percentage includes some that can be seriously annoying--lice, mosquitoes, bed bugs. They're in here, too--but even they can seem pretty enchanting, when illuminated by Glausiusz's lively, fact-packed prose and the electron miscrope that yields the book's breathtaking photographs.
This is the sort of book you'll often read aloud to anyone else in the room--and if no one is there you'll have to call someone up. "Hey--did you know that the Colorado potato beetle was once the focus of a failed German plot to target Britain with bug-bombs?" Need a recipe for locusts, or presentation ideas for serving Superworm larvae? That's in here, too. On these pages, you'll meet bugs who eat skin flakes (house dust mites), bugs who cure skin ulcers (the maggots of the green blowfly) and bugs who kick footballs, draw chariots and turn carousels (fleas.)
Some of these critters are downright cute. Take the drugstore beetle on page 47, hiding coyly behind a breadcrumb. (Its Latin name, we learn, means "hidden.") The Indian meal moth looks positively pensive in its portrait atop a raisin. Nearly every page features a stunning portrait by Munich-base photogrpaher Volker Steger. But most of them, taken with a scanning electron microscope and computer-colorized to distinguish the insects' features, portray a wierd majesty that outshines even that of the dinosaurs. For unlike those extinct giants, these minaitures live among us daily, a source of deep and thrilling mystery near at hand.

5 out of 5 stars WEIRD AND WONDERFUL...........2004-05-05

"BUZZ" truly takes off!! The authors of this wonderful new book offer one a unique excursion to an insectoid universe paralleling our own...The photographs are astounding, revealing the beautiful and the bizarre in incredible, illuminating detail- insect images that continually astound, beguile and startle.
The book also presents a fascinating accompanying text that is compelling in its vast sweep and variety - literary, historical, cultural,scientific- a rich compendium of insect lives, loves and lore, both serious and whimsical.
I would highly recommend this book to readers of all ages who are curious about the world we share with the insects that creep, crawl and cavort around us!

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous & Fascinating.......2004-04-17

Absolutely fabulous book -- constantly amazed me at the myriad strange interactions between us humans & insects. It seemed as though every page reveals something new, entirely unexpected, and jaw-dropping. The writing is extremely clear, and makes for a very easy read, but doesn't spare those juicy little tidbits & details that really make it fun. I went back & picked up an extra copy for a nephew -- great gift suggestion.

.....having just lost a cat that I'd had for fourteen years, I can tell you that the pain is terrible and that the one thing that can reduce the pain is someone who has been through it and who understands. Dr. Julie Kaufman, an animal chiropractor, has compiled a collection of wonderful stories written by people who have lost pets, be they cats, dogs, a horse or a beloved goldfish. It helps relieve one's own grief to read how each individual dealt with the loss, memorialized a pet and in some cases wrote poetry or even attempted to contact a departed animal spirit. She even includes relaxation and breathing techniques to engage in while thinking of one's beloved lost companion. This book was recommended to me by a friend and is wonderful for anyone dealing with the terrible grief that accompanies such a loss.

She has helped Tilly with her severe arthritis and greatly reduced her pain. This book is filled with stories of the animals Dr. Julie has known and treated. There is also an excellent interview with veterinarian accupuncturist Dr. Heather Evans. This book will speak to your heart.

4 out of 5 stars A Refreshing New Perspective on Pet Bereavement.......1999-12-18

Crossing the Rubicon: Celebrating the Human-Animal bond in Life and Death. 1999. By Julie Kaufman, DC.

This is a very well-written and heartwarming anthology of real stories and experiences with pets. As the title indicates, it is intended to offer the reader new perspectives on the loss of a beloved companion animal. It also conveys the important message the bereaving pet owner is not alone, in this grief.

The author has succeeded in transcending the usual view and fear of death that we all have been raised with. In her wisdom and perspective she perceives death as a natural phenomenon, and offers gentle guidance to her readers, in developing this theme.

Each chapter begins with a self-help approach to meditative visualization and healing. In addition to the many heartwarming memorial poems and stories, this helpful book presents a positive philosophy of undying love, that enriches and enhances the life of the surviving owner.

In presenting new viewpoints on pet death, Dr. Kaufman has also added five interviews of special people, in this wonderful collection. These include a counselor in pet bereavement, two forward-looking holistic veterinarians, and the last two with a spiritualist and animal communicator.

Although the recent emergence and popularity of holistic medicine is starting to prove its hitherto undiscovered values, the suggestions that some people can communicate with animals - living as well as dead - can be too extreme for many. But it is still very interesting to read what these people have to say.

Overall, Crossing the Rubicon is an excellent new literary experience in pet love and loss. We recommend its reading, and trust that a future edition will include the APLB website with the others listed as Internet resources.

4 out of 5 stars A sensitive, heartfelt collection of experiences with pets.......1999-11-20

Julie has carefully combined a variety of writings, both her own and from other pet owners, that show the depth of emotional and spiritual connection that can exist between humans and their animal companions. These stories are "from the heart." Read this and see if a story of your own isn't sparked to life.

4 out of 5 stars excellent book for animal lovers.......1999-10-15

This collection of stories, interviews, and poems is reassuring and inspiring. Anyone who has ever lost a pet they loved should find something to relate to in this book. The interviews with veterinarians are great and the first-person accounts of people dealing with their grief will make those suffering from a similar loss feel less alone and hopeless. Highly recommended!

    Book Description

This book gathers, in one place, those measures presently used to study the human-companion animal bond. The measures chosen for inclusion are the most heavily used by researchers, as well as measures that appear to be innovative or relate to the different aspects of the human-companion animal relationship. The measures cover the human-animal bond principally by attachment, but also by fear, abuse, or neglect.

Wonderful starting point for creating measures and helps to explain some other anthrozoology studies that have been published.

4 out of 5 stars Great summary of research and useful to have the tools.......2007-04-05

This book is great in that it provides the actual survey tools used to assess the human-animal bond, as well as references where to find where the tools have been used. Wonderful that this information can be found at your fingertips! Would appreciate clarification on whether we can freely use these tools. Highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to evaluate human-animal interactions, even in regards to other types of research, such as compliance in other aspects of veterinary medicine.

    Book Description

Why do dogs and their woners, both social animals, often have problems? As a practicing veterinarian, Dr. Milani found that many owners fail to understand the meaning of dogs' behavioral displays. By mistaking territoriality for spite, dominant behavior for love, and making other false interpretations, owners often respond inappropriately. Many owners also fail to grasp how their own emotions and body language affect their relationships with their pets. Here, based on fascinating case histories form her own practice, Dr. Milani offers a guide that goes beyond solving dog behavioral problems.

The Body Language and Emotion of Dogs also explores the powerful emotions aroused in those of us who seek satisfactory bonds with our pets. Understanding both the social nature of dogs and also that our own emotional responses enhance the physical, mental, and emotional health of both owner and pet. Dr. Milani uses fact, practical experience, and above all, sensitivity and tolerance to help owners build better relationships with their dogs.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-12-04

As a dog trainer-in training, I've been systematically reading just about every title I can find about dogs. I do find this book taking a bit longer to read then many others, however I feel it contains helpful information on the various behaviors of dogs that humans often misread.

Anthromorphisizing our pets' behaviors, while often cute and funny, can lead to some serious relationship issues and Ms. Milani is attempting to combat that in this book. Rather then emphasizing "terminating the relationship" as many of the previous reviewers have focused on, the author is attempting to prevent such occurances. She does mention on occasion that in some situations rehoming the dog in a more suitable environment is best for all those concerned. I don't feel her intent is to condone euthanasia as a "cure-all" nor do I feel she encourages anyone to simply give up on the dog/human relationship without taking every reasonable measure to ensure sucess.

I feel she does a good job explaning common issues that arise in dog/human teams and the reasons behind these problems. Dog training is often more about the person then the dog and she does well illustrating how our behaviors shape those of our companion animals.

I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to understand the motivations of dogs, the behaviors they present, and the reasons we humans do what we do. Ms. Milani presents solutions to common problems in an easy to understand and implement manner.

2 out of 5 stars Missleading title used by publisher and author........2003-04-06

More on people psychology than dog behaviors. Very Dissapointed! Reads like a story. Learned more about how humans missread dog behavior than did what actual dog behaviors are, which is what I am looking for. Very wordy. Recommend the Dog Language Encyclopedia by Roger Abrantes.

4 out of 5 stars Reading Language of Your Dog while your's is being read.......2001-04-15

This is not written in the most entertaining or comfortable of styles, but nonetheless, it contains much valuable info on body language of dog and of dog owner.

We learn from our dogs and trainers and vets much about how to relate better to our dogs. Milani certainly has experience and credibility demonstrated by this work that she knows how to read dog's signs and react appropriately with behavior that gives them the feedback, message received.

If you're looking for more comfortable read, see "Latchkey Dogs." Both will give similar info. This one, slightly more of a heady version without all the story format.

    1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2000-11-21

I regret to say that I agree with a previous reviewer who said that this book "turned my stomach." I bought the book because I wanted to learn about dog body language and our interpretations (or misinterpretations) of that language in an effort to improve my understanding of canine behavior.

Instead of the careful analysis I expected from a veterinarian, Dr. Milani uses anectotal examples of cruelty to dogs as her examples. She describes, over and over again, dogs who are beaten, tied outside and euthanized because their owners "misunderstand" them. Not only are the case studies anecdotal and, as such, not a useful statistical description of dog/human relations, but they are very upsetting to read. And, as a previous reviewer has stated, Dr. Milani fails to condemn the practices she describes in such great detail. In fact, she admits to euthanizing otherwise healthy dogs simply because their owners failed to change their attitudes toward their pets, take them for training or make attempts to re-home the dogs. I cannot imagine how a veterinarian could engage in such a practice.

In conclusion, my work with a breed rescue organization prevents me from recommending a book in which euthanizing dogs is called "termination of the relationship." It is a fact that sometimes dogs and owners are mismatched, but every effort must be made to re-home the dog before euthanasia is ever considered. In fact, there are several animal sanctuaries in the United States which provide permanent homes for "untrainable" or aggressive dogs.

Shame on you , Dr. Milani, for representing your book as a useful tool for improving our relationships with dogs.

1 out of 5 stars Steel yourself before reading this book.......2000-02-15

If you love animals, steel yourself before reading this book. In most of the "case studies" Milani gives the dogs' owners are routinely beating their animals for their mistakes or infractions -- infractions which she then analyzes in terms of "normal" dog behavior. Example after example of dogs being beaten for peeing on the floor, not coming when called, etc. turned my stomach. The worst part is Milani doesn't condemn the beatings.

In fact it's a pretty useless book. It told me very little about dog behavior, more about nutty people behavior, and the constant cruelty made me really hate the whole thing. Don't buy it!

    Book Description

This fact-filled, colorful look at the amazing world of butterflies includes a call to action to protect these beautiful insects. MELISSA STEWART SHARES shares with young readers the basic facts about butterflies, including how they transform from caterpillar to butterfly, where they live, what they eat, and how they benefit plants and animals. Sidebars throughout the book contain information on human action that has harmed butterflies in the past and the many ways people can protect certain butterfly populations, such as by preserving forests and meadows and cutting down on pesticide use. Also included are pointers on how youngsters can help butterflies in their own neighborhood. Stewart reminds children of the interconnectedness of our world and shows how the actions of one species can inadvertently harm another. Bond's realistically detailed watercolor illustrations highlight the diversity of the species, from the Schaus swallowtail butterflies in southern Florida to the endangered Mitchell's satyrs.

Award-winning children's book author Melissa Stewart presents A Place For Butterflies, a picturebook beautifully illustrated by Higgins Bond with realistic, full-color art of butterfly species and the lush natural environments they inhabit. Each two-page spread features a couple sentences about butterflies, a sidebar about a specific butterfly species, and artwork of a typical home for that species ranging from forests to lush open fields. A Place For Butterflies is written to instill love and appreciation for these marvelous insects, and a final section about helping butterflies warns against catching or keeping them, or spraying chemicals that could harm them.

Our daughter loves this book! She started to read it because she was interested in butterflies, but the text not only discusses butterflies, it explains how they have an enormous impact on other living things. As a result, the young reader comes away with a deep understanding of how the natural world works. The book is about more than just butterflies. The illustrations are also excellent. I highly recommend it.
