5 out of 5 stars Mystery AND high magic, what more could you want?.......2006-01-14

Kurtz does an excellent job of weaving a mystery and giving the Reader an inside glimpse of ritual magic. Each book in this series can easily stand alone, but I recommend reading them all, starting with the first one, of course. If you love a good mystery, and are intrigued by magic, this series is for you!

3 out of 5 stars More Quaint Ol' Occult Detective Stuff .......2005-04-06

This follow-up to THE ADEPT has all of the faults and strengths of Book One of the series. Fortunately, it also has an expanding cast of colorful characters who are beginning to come into their own here.

Sir Adam Sinclair, Bt. is still too well turned out, but Peregrine Lovat has begun to shed his "Youthful Ward Dick Grayson" persona in favor of a more mature, more nettlesome individuality. Police Inspector Noel McLeod has become nearly three-dimensional as opposed to the cardboard soldier depiction of his character in the first novel.

In LODGE OF THE LYNX Sir Adam and his Huntsmen are pitted against an evil covey of black magic practitioners who are dedicated to destroying Freemasons and Freemasonry. There's an interesting Hitlerian subplot and a good deal of accurate information on paleolithic European sacrifice rituals, as well as some generally unknown facts about Masonic practice that make this book particularly engrossing.

The detail and settings are extremely visual, and hold the reader's attention well. Of course, Sir Adam continues to be GQ's Man of the Year---it's almost comic when he mumbles "I dunno" in response to a question after a near fatal car crash as opposed to his usual, "I haven't any idea, sir."

The biggest failing of this novel is its stretching of suspended disbelief to the breaking point. All good fantasy asks the reader to accept certain premises and suspend doubt in the telling of the tale. While its easy enough to believe the angelic visitations that the Huntsmen experience during an initiation ritual it is much harder to believe that Sir Adam and friends can draft the SAS to help fight the epic battle between good and evil that climaxes the book.

Despite the somewhat over the top ending LODGE OF THE LYNX is a fine light read.

5 out of 5 stars Kept me up all night.......2005-02-23

I absolutely loved this book and the series overall. The friendship that develops between Adam and Peregrine is wonderful without being over the top. I particular enjoyed the lack of pages worth of details. I don't care about the color of the leaves, etc. I myuch prefer the dialog between the characters and this series fit that requirement for me.

While there is some mention of girlfriends and wives I was glad that I was subjected to ongoing drama from the usual emotional female. Likewise it was great not to have to deal with an unrealistic, half dressed, woman on horseback weilding a sword that weighs more than her. The main characters through the 4th book are men and we don't get subjected to female hysteria until the 5th book.

A wonderful modern day story about adepts that takes you all over Scotland with a group of handsome, courageous gentlemen who happen to wealthy as well.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2004-06-09

I have just recently finished the series and am fascinated with it still...I am deeply interested in the meta physical studies and this series by kuntz has realy opened my eyes to the possibilities. Though i agree in that some of the characters are a bit shallow... and the conversation is a bit proper and gay a little too much. It was a fascinating series and i hope to read more of kuntz's books. Also i hope she would write a book or two on Sir Adrian Sinclair and Hunting lodge's past, as i never fully understood it...

5 out of 5 stars Great occult mystery.......2003-03-18

I love occult fiction and a friend recommended the Adept series to me because he knew I liked Dion Fortune's fiction. Unlike Fortune's fiction, this novel won't gift you with verses for your rituals, but it certainly captures the feeling of the astral realms and the battle of good versus evil. Okay, so the hero is wealthy and lives a life of luxury we can only imagine, but, hey, this is a fantasy, no? And what better to fantasize than the genteel life of a British gentleman? Even if one is female (like me), one can still fantasize about such privilege. A very good read.

"Once upon a time, long, long ago, where the forest runs down to the ocean, a hunter lived all alone in a house made of logs he had chopped for himself and shingles he had split for himself." These words ease the reader into the elegant, dreamlike world of Randall Jarrell's Newbery Honor book The Animal Family. One night, the lonely hunter hears the singing of a mermaid, and because "he himself was as patient as an animal," the mermaid learns to trust him, speaking to him in a voice like the water. In time they teach each other their languages, with many amusing exchanges occurring as the hunter tries to teach his new friend terrestrial words and concepts. The hunter explains, "The house is a big wooden thing ... that you stay inside at night or when it rains." "Why?" she asks. "To keep from getting wet." "To keep from getting wet?" the mermaid says despairingly.

The mermaid and the hunter become a family when the hunter takes a bear cub from its mother to live with them as a son. "The bear's table manners were bad. But so were the mermaid's--especially as she couldn't resist throwing the bear pieces of fish." Having a bear around seems perfectly normal, but not quite a complete family, so eventually the hunter captures a spotted baby lynx. When the lynx brings home not another dead partridge, but a little boy, the delicate, playful family dynamics change again. This book of low-key epiphanies is packed with delightful, illuminating, often unexpected comparisons of the ocean world and the land world most non-mermaids wouldn't have considered. Enhanced by a beautiful design and gorgeous illustrations by Maurice Sendak, this book is perfect for any reader--young or old--ready for a bit of gentle philosophy with a decided twinkle. (All ages) --Karin Snelson

    Book Description

This is the story of how, one by one, a man found himself a family. Almost nowhere in fiction is there a stranger, dearer, or funnier family -- and the life that the members of The Animal Familylive together, there in the wilderness beside the sea, is as extraordinary and as enchanting as the family itself.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2007-07-04

This is a beautiful, timeless story, told in gorgeous prose, and charmingly decorated. I'm not the sort of person who gushes over books, but this one is true literary perfection, and not just for children. It's the kind of book that, no matter how old you are when you first read it, will stay with you for the rest of your life.

    5 out of 5 stars Gentle, old-fashioned, and whimsical........2006-11-15

This story by Jarrell is gentle, mythical, and stands the test of time. A short story about a solitary hunter on an island, who meets a mermaid, and together form a family with animals they meet. The tone is warm and soft, kind and at times bittersweet.

While perfect for bedtime, cold or rainy days, this book is appealing to me even as i grow older. The subtle lessons about companionship, newness, differences, loneliness, loss, and joy are not forced to the fore. Rather, an old-fashioned sense of creating an environment as a way to tell a story is key here. Inviting wilderness, homely relationships, and just enough magic and mystery to compel the story forward.

One of my most treasured books since i was a young child, the is a timeless and infinitely re-readable story.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-08-16

I read this as a child. It got stuck in my mind, but I could never remember the title, thinking of it only as the story of the Hunter and the Mermaid. I searched for it for years.

This is a beautiful story, one of my favorites for children.

5 out of 5 stars A fairy tale brought to life.......2005-02-17

Every once in a while, an author manages to pull off a novel that carries with it the exact tone and magical feeling of a fairy tale. In the genre of The Last Unicorn and The Princess Bride, this beautiful story takes you into a peaceful world where a lonely hunter lives by the sea.
The story follows the hunter's efforts to make a family for himself, and to keep that family safe. I don't want to spoil any of the plot points, but I will say that this gentle fable is going to fill each reader with joy and contentment. The tale is universal, and is just perfect for a shared experience at bedtime.
The decorations by Maurice Sendak are also quite lovely, giving us detailed sketches of the landscapes that the hunter and his family occupy.

5 out of 5 stars The Animal Family.......2005-01-10

This book is truly what you would call a beautifully written piece of literature. It is the story of a lonely hunter who meets a mermaid. She comes to live with him despite being torn between her home in the sea and her love for the hunter. They live happily except that they wish for a child. Since to have a human child is not possible, the hunter first brings home a bear cub and then a lynx who become like their children. This story has a wonderful, dreamlike quality to it. The words and story flow lyrically and almost timelessly and the descriptions are simple and wonderfully vivid and beautiful. It will apeal to all ages. Children will like the funny story and gentleness of the words and teens and adults will find the deeper meaning as well as appreaciate the lovely scenes. This is a book you will want to read over and over.

4 out of 5 stars A good mystery made better by the author's feminism........1998-11-24

Jason Lynx is asked by his old friend Bruce to investigate the murder of his half-brother, the Rev. Ernie Quivada, a fundamentalist minister in Santa Fe, N. M. The dead man left behind an artist wife, an estranged daughter, two frightening, fundamentalist grandparents, a houseful of free loaders, and few kind memories. This book has also been published as "Dead On Sunday." A. J. Orde also writes fantasy under the name Sheri Tepper. She brings a strong feminist sensibility to her writing that has often left me very angry at "Men", and I love it. Her writing always leaves you knowing the characters and understanding their motivations. I'm afraid I can easily consume a Jason Lynx story in one sitting. The problem comes in finding the books, many are out of print.

    Superb pictorial of big cats.

Big cats are efficient predators that once roamed from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and the Arctic to the Gulf of Mexico. Today, they are confined to scattered, remote habitats.

Forest Cats of North America is an intensive look at panthers, cougars, lynxes and bobcats, describing each species in detail. Range maps identify where the cats live and fact files feature scientific and common names, number of subspecies, physical traits, diet, life span and more. Spectacular color photographs capture these cats as they stalk, hunt and raise their young.

The fascinating evolution of big cats is covered including the differences between North American and African cats and how the cougar may well be the ancestor of the cheetah.

Forest Cats of North America is a lively, informative introduction to the continent's most elusive predators.

We have all enjoyed the fact based information along with the wonderful picutres of Bobcats and Lynx Cats. We were pleased to find the depth of the information provided. This is a wonderful reference for anyone with an interest in these incredible cats.

5 out of 5 stars Good Resource Book.......2000-11-02

This is a good book to learn about behaviors of the 3 Northern cats. Expecially good for those of us who own, and are interested in learning about the behavior, traits and differences between the species. Of course in tame bobcats, the authors comments about being like a big domestic? housecat are very true. Who can explain "domestic" in any cat species anyway? There are in my opinion only 2 types of cats: feral (wild NO human contact) and Tame: (raised by humans from birth)

5 out of 5 stars A great book on some hard to find species.......1999-12-02

This book really is wonderful. My interests lie mainly in bobcats, and it is rather difficult to find good sources on these felines. This book is one of the few good bobcat books I have found, giving equal attention to bobcats, lynxes, and cougars. It combines beautiful, vibrant photos with informative, clear text. Color range maps and "basics" boxes appear for each species, and the book even contains several American Indian legends, trivia (such as "How not to become a cougar victim,") and quotes concerning these cats. I am very pleased with this book, and highly recommend it to any lover of American wildcats.

    Book Description

Years ago, David Freedberg stumbled across a group of drawings by the little-known Academy of Linceans, a seventeenth-century Italian group that took as its task nothing less than the pictorial documentation of all of nature. Moving across Europe, he encountered thousands of such drawings—of fossils, the species of the New World, or the heavenly bodies studied by the group's most famous member, Galileo Galilei. Profusely illustrated and engagingly written, this book reveals this crucial moment in the development of natural history.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book.......2002-12-20

This book, by David Freedberg, tells the fascinating story of Freedberg's discovery, on a tip from the notorious spy and brilliant art historian Anthony Blunt, of a group of amazing antique drawings stashed away in an obscure cupboard in Windsor Castle. The images, gracefully drawn and beautifully colored, depicted a bizarre range of flora and fauna: deformed lemons with claw-like legs, flamingoes, dramatic portraits of badger faces, strange plants...

The discovery marked the beginning of a great adventure told in the book--of Freedberg's search for and discovery of the source of the drawings: a 17th-century gang of noblemen and eccentrics based largely in Rome who took as their mission nothing less than the discovery, analysis, and visual record of all natural knowledge. They called themselves the Accademia Lincea, or Academy of Lynxes. This was the age of Galileo, who was in fact a member, and whose work the Lincea edited and published. With the aid of microscopes, telescopes, and other instruments, the Lincea and their peers began to develop a picture of the natural world in all its details that profoundly challenged traditional views of Heaven and Earth, supported by the Roman Catholic Church.

Freedberg's manner is at once learned and accessible. He tells a gripping story of a group of fascinating characters, some brilliant, some insane, and their grand projects, including a decidedly obsessive interest in bees. Lavishly illustrated in color and black-and-white, this is surely one of the most attractive, novel, and important works of history this year.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN SCIENCE AND ITS HISTORY.......2002-12-19

Rich in breathtakingly beautiful illustrations (83 color plates, 89 halftones) "The Eye of the Lynx" is a must-have for those with a penchant for science and its history.

We are told that author Freedberg, an art history professor and director of the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University, once happened upon a neglected cupboard in Windsor Castle holding hundreds of intricately precise drawings of plants and animals dating from the Old and New Worlds. He was acting on the word of Anthony Blount, an art historian and British spy. These drawings had been hidden and forgotten since the days of King George III.

Later, after coming across countless more throughout Europe, Freedberg discovered their provenance - a small 17th century scientific group. Based in Italy it was called the Academy of Linceans for Lynx-eyed.

This optimistic organization set as their goal the representation of all nature in pictures. The mighty task of the Linceans is recounted for the first time in English in this wondrous book. They, unlike their predecessors, focused on internal structures rather than external appearances.

For its time, one of the most outre ideas proposed by the Linceans was the microscope. They simply turned Galileo's telescope around and exposed a once invisible world.

Freedberg has rendered an enormous service in bringing to light this integral portion of the development of visuals as related to natural history.

5 out of 5 stars An investment I did not regret.......2001-07-28

One day, I found my car leaking oil like crazy. Like a good customer, I took it to the local Ford dealership and they stopped the leaking. However, not sure if this is deliberate or not, they forgot to return what was my my pre-heat hose and all along I was wondering why both my car was not working right and what this extra part was that was left on the side.

An officemate of mine suggested that I invest in a Chilton for my cars make and model and with his help, I figured out that it was this book that I needed and I have not regretted it ever since. The book had the diagram I needed that there should be a hose where there was none and the type I needed. Moreover, I also needed new spark plugs and a new gas filter. The combination of all three has resulted in a smooth running. I use the book as a reference rather than having read it from cover to cover. It has proven its worth and has saved me hundred of dollars in repair bills. I highly recommend this book and if the series is anything like it - the whole series.

Even though the cover says all models, there is very little information on the gt models. The info that is in the book is incorrect. All of the info that I have gottten from the book has been wrong and set me further back. I simple task I tried to accomplish was a tranny fluid change. The book claims that the only way to drain the tranny is to remove it from the car and turn it upside down. Wrong, there is a big drain plug on the bottom. Second, if you remove the stated plug to fill the tranny, parts will come undone inside. Finally once you do find out how to get the oil in, the quantity mentioned is dangerously low. Save your money.

    2 out of 5 stars It did n't help me a beginner.........1999-03-07

It did n't help me a beginner.. I bought this book hoping to help me locate ignition key harness, power lock switch, etc to do a "Remote start Key-less entry system" install project. It end up wasting time and money. I end up opening-up lot of unnecessary places..

      Book Description

Emma Howell died in 2001 at the age of 20. She lived in both Spain and Brazil, as well as her native Oregon, and left behind a body of poetry bright with darkness and joy. " In Slim Night of Recognition, Emma Howell's surprisingly mature vision is always deep and often dark: ' All I know I have said into an emptiness / to test the depth of it,' she wrote, even as she reached for transcendence. The poems approach the nearly unsayable through unexpected juxtapositions of imagery and sure but unpredictable music."—Martha Collins, author of Some Things Words Can Do "How very gifted she was; the poems possess such an uncanny authority, swerve in such clean and unsettling ways, and hit such detailed, wonderfully unpredictable and always right-feeling notes, they're truly stirring. Astonishing to think she wrote them at so young an age, given their authority and patient, graceful movement. This is a beauty of a book and, though she is not here, it will keep her voice among us."—Laurie Sheck, author of Black Series: Poems
