A very interesting read.......2007-09-15
Xenophon covers several aspects of horsemanship, from grooming, leading, and choosing a horse, to mounting, riding, and training a war mount. Very, very interesting to see what is still applicable today. While this isn't a "training" or even a "horse care book," its a great historical reference from those interested in how horses we cared for and trained 2000 years ago. However, for those looking for a story or a book to teach riding skills, I suggest you look elsewhere. Those interested in dressage will find this worth-while, as it is considered the oldest text on the subject.
Evidence of Ancient Humanism .......2007-06-27
Xenophon's philosophy and many techniques, though tailored for the development of a war-horse, demonstrate the ageless capacity for human empathy toward the horse. The horse centered work makes the goal of a harmonious partnership attainable. The book interweaves aspects of barn management, riding technique, and early human psychological insights. The translation keeps this work relevant and vibrant. The overriding theme is one of responsibility for the education and wellbeing of the horse. It is, if nothing else, a comfort to read that some horses in the ancient world were treated humanely in the training process...even if under the unfortunate auspices of a warrior culture. A "Must" For The Serious Horse Owner's/ Trainer's Library.......2005-09-23
The first ever book of it's kind on selecting, training and riding horses, eloquently written by an articulate ancient Greek horseman. A quick read but entertaining and enlightening. This English translation is very fluid and easy to understand. Xenophon covers all the basics of horse husbandry that are still followed 2500 years later. If you are thinking of owning or training a horse, this work is a good place to start.
The Art of Horsemanship by Xenophon.......2005-09-19
Well translated version of the first book written on horsemanship. Translator has added interesting facts in a separate chapter concerning horses in Greek times 2500 years ago.For a student of horsemanship this book is highly recommended as the nature of the horse is considered as an important factor in his training.
The great-great-great-grandfather of dressage........2003-12-06
Before there was dressage there was Xenophon. He was a general and horseman, though it's hard to tell which he was first. It doesn't take a genius to realize that the man knew what he was talking about - otherwise we wouldn't be reading his words MILLENIA after he wrote them. I wonder if his horses felt they were lucky he was their rider - I know I feel lucky that we can still read his ideas.

The Best of the Best. Fall in love laugh and cry. A horse lovers must read........2005-10-14
Its the best horse book I have ever read. Any horse lover or owner like me will fall in love with the horses and the characters. I laughed and even came near to tears in this heart filled story. I highly recommend it.
Finally, a YA horse-book that's realistic!.......2005-05-06
I love Ellen Feld's Morgan Horse books. I love them because they don't ask the reader to believe that teenaged girls can solve crimes, stop the destruction of rural America, or take a half-starved rescue horse on Monday and win the KY Derby on him the following weekend. OK; I'm exaggerating. It usually takes them at least 6 months before they win the Derby.
Ms. Feld's books are realistic in their portrayal of the human and equine characters, and accurate in their descriptions of tack, veterinary care, etc.
As a once-upon-a-time horse-crazy teenager grown into a horse-crazy middle aged person, and both a bookseller and tack store owner in years past, I appreciate the fact that Ms. Feld's books aren't filled with inaccuracy and improbable fantasy. It has always seemed to me that many YA stories that are, presuppose that the readers are not very knowledgeable about horses.
Five stars and a bag of carrots to Ellen Feld's books.
Calling all horse crazy kids!.......2004-09-04
This book is a must have for all who love horses! It is entertaining, heartwarming, and inspiring. No teenage girl should be without it!!
Great book - even for non-horse enthusiasts.......2004-07-12
When my son chose this book I was less than enthusiastic seeing that I have little interest in horses, but the story line was completely captivating and down-to-earth, unlike so many books for this age level. We both enjoyed Blackjack, and look forward to reading the other books in this series.

First Serendipity Book I remember.......2007-02-24
This is one of the first serendipity books I ever read when I was a child. Now my daughter loves these books as well. I did own this as a child, but have since lost it, so I am ordering one from here of course. I explained to my 6 yr old daughter what the story is about and she is anxious to read this one. We have the other books in the Morgan series and she loves them, I highly recommend this book, along with the others in this series and "The Gigglesnitcher" as Morgan is in that story as well. This story Morgan Morning, is sad, but it does have a good moral, and of course the photos are beautiful as always in these books. A++++
Beautiful and Memorable Story.......2007-02-09
This book is the greatest, most memorable book from my early childhood. The story is one of a colt that is forced to deal with sad circumstances. He has to deal with the loss of his parent, and in so doing becomes a greater and stronger individual. The writing in the book is heart-wrenchingly vivid. The pictures are done beautifully. I have read others that say the book is too depressing for children. I do not believe this is true. It is a deep story, one that will still be in the process of being understood as the child grows, but it is a story worth knowing and hearing. I plan to read this book to my children, and I can only hope that it leaves the same great and lasting impression on them that it did on me.
TOO SAD for young kids.......2005-12-09
If you think that the cute unicorn on the front of this book makes the book a great gift for your fun-loving preschooler or kindergartener..... think AGAIN! This book is inappropriately sad. If your child is even REMOTELY sensitive, this book will knock her out. My kid bawled & we had to get rid of the book after only reading it once. It was traumatizingly sad & just WAY TOO MUCH. If you are buying this book, BE AWARE of its content before bestowing it upon some unsuspecting kid. We got ours off a library discard pile & then we threw it out.
This is an amaizing book, a must have.........2005-11-09
This is an amaizing book, a must have.. Growing up I would always read it. The problem was it has such a sad story that my mom and sister would not read it to me because they would always cry. My son is now 3, next week is book week at school. I was so excited I signed up to read in his class and found my old copy of the book. As I read it I remembered how sad the story is and won't be able to read it for his class because I too can not get thru the book with out crying. It brought me so close to my mom, made me appresiate her even more that I already did. It really is a moving book.
wonderful book.......2004-10-10
Wow. I can't believe this book is still around and that I found it! When I was in 1st-3rd grade I would go into the school library everyday and read this book. I absolutely loved it and it made me love my mother a lot more than I wanted too at the time. :-) At the risk of sounding corny, it shaped me as a person and I can't wait to re-read it.

My Grandkids Loved This Book!.......2006-12-19
Once again, author Ellen Feld relates a wonderful story. My grandchildren are 6 and 8, have their own horse, and were totally enthralled with the little Morgan foal "Shadow" and her escapades. The writing is large and easy for young readers to read and the illustrations are colorful and eye catching. A must have for every child in this age group!

We Love Frosty........2006-12-18
My grandchildren love this book. The illustrations are beautiful, the story wonderful. This is a great book for parents (or grandparents) to read to 4- 6 year old children, and it's also a great read for 7 and 8 year olds on their own. Short sentences and paragraphs hold the children's attention, and the story is delightful. A great buy!
A delightful story for girls who loves horses.......2006-12-18

"Shadow: The Curious Morgan Horse" by Ellen F. Feld is one in the "Morgan Horse Series." Jeanne Mellin lends her artistic talent in the illustrations. I read this book to my three-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. My son does not show any signs of an attention span yet, but my daughter sat through three pages of it. She then grabbed it from me, so that she may explain the illustrations to me.
"Shadow: The Curious Morgan Horse" is a story of a young horse, Shadow, who wants to see the world beyond the pasture. When a tree falls on the fence, Shadow seizes the moment and crosses into the woods. After realizing the woods are not that exciting, Shadow wants to go back to the pasture for familiarity and family. It is a classic case of "The grass is greener on the other side."
I asked my nine-year-old son read it. It did not interest him. He is not interested in horses, though. I believe girls in the third and fourth grades would enjoy it. The word "mother" is used often in the book. I had to replace it with "Mommy" for my young ones.
If you happen to know a young girl who enjoys horses, "Shadow: The Curious Morgan Horse," will be treasured. The font is large, and the illustrations are eye-catching. Ellen F. Field also has written four other books in the series about Morgan horses.

Ellen Feld has done it again! The second book in a series about the bond between horses and people. Bravo--can't wait for the next one!!
a neat horse book-I loved it!.......2004-08-14
This is a really cool horse book. I read the other book in the series last year. It is called Blackjack. This one was even better!!! I didn't know how Blackjack would get cured or how Heather and Frosty would get out of the woods. I read it really fast too cause I didn't want to stop.
Cool horse book!!!.......2004-07-14
This was a really, really good book. I loved the first book in this series. It was called Blackjack. Frosty is the second book and it is really neat. I don't like horse books that talk more about the people and who likes who or who is going to be their new boyfriend. I want to read about horses! These books are all about horses. The people seem real and so do the horses. In Blackjack, the horse hated to canter on one lead, just like the horse that I ride in my lessons. And Frosty does a lot of stuff that my lesson horse Jess does too. You should read this book if you like horses.
A neat new series! I love it!!!.......2004-07-01
I read Blackjack which is the first book in this series and thought it was the best horse book ever. Then I read Frosty and I liked it just as much. This is a really cool series. I love how real the horses are and all the horse show stuff and trail riding stuff is neat.
A story to be cherished by horse lovers of all ages.......2004-01-15
The adventurous sequel to Ellen F. Feld's novel, "Blackjack", Frosty: The Adventures Of A Morgan Horse is a thoroughly delightful novel for young readers about a girl and her relationship with powerful and noble animals. Heather Richardson, owner of the horse Blackjack, is entrusted with a rare gray Morgan named Frosty. Heather learns to her disappointment that not all horses are meant for the show ring, yet she also discovers that Frosty's strength lies in trail riding as she and Frosty must learn to work together to survive the woods of Vermont. Frosty is a story to be cherished by horse lovers of all ages.

Great background info on Morgans.......2003-08-08
This book has a very informative description of the breed, and the most thorough description of the early bloodlines that I have ever seen in print. An absolute must for Morgan lovers, especially if you are an amateur thinking about getting into breeding, or someone with your first Morgan who just wants to know more about the breed origins and general purpose/use. The only thing I did not like about this book is that it does not go far enough! Most of today's living Morgans are far enough removed from these famous horses of the past that it is difficult to figure out (so to speak!) which horses in the book your own horse(s) descend from. It is nonetheless an informative book and a good read, as well.
Excellent Book.......1999-11-11
I believe this book to be one of the most excellent and informative books on the Morgan horse. If you love Morgans or just love horses and want to learn more about this Spectacular breed, then get this book!

Great any age horse book.......2006-03-30
We love Ellen Feld's books- both young and old for they appeal to all horse owners and hopefully some prospective ones!
A Well-written & Realistic Horse Story.......2006-02-06
I read Rusty some time ago, finishing it in approximately one day because I could not put it down!!! It was a wonderful book, and I really enjoyed it.
This book is third in the Morgan Horse series by Ellen F. Feld, and continues the story of Heather Richardson and her horses Blackjack and Frosty. Frosty is expecting a foal, who is born at the beginning of the novel. As Heather raises "Shadow" and continues to work with her other horses, she branches out and begins jumping. Her friend Laura helps her, and Heather's mount is the talented gelding Rusty. The pair soon enter the exciting world of show jumping, seeking to qualify for the Tri-County Jump-Off. Rusty and Laura came close to winning this event years ago, and Heather is determined that she and Rusty will win this time!
Then Heather notices that her foal, Shadow, is developing crooked legs. She will require surgery to fix them. This becomes an exciting subplot to the story. Heather also makes a new friend, Nicholas, who is aiming for the Jump-Off as well. They train together and help each other, until, at the very last moment, a hoof abscess and another accident may keep them both out of the competition!
The thing I enjoyed most while reading this book was its realism. The author obviously knows horses well. The horses' personalities and the events that happen are described excellently. The book is also very educational on subjects such as foal-raising, jumping, showing, and general horse care. I jump with my own horse, who, like Rusty and Heather, knows way more than I do about it!! I was really able to relate to everything that happened to Heather as she perfected her jumping skills. It made Rusty a very enjoyable read for me.
Many lessons about friendship and good sportsmanship are woven into the story as well.
This whole series is made up of very realistic and entertaining horse stories. I would highly recommend this and the two preceding books, and I hope the series continues!!!!
Best Horse Book!.......2005-06-24
This is my favorite book from the Morgan series. I like to jump my horse so I could really relate to the people in this book that like to jump. Heather gets nervous at a show and I had that happen too. I couldn't wait to see what happened at the big show at the end. It was great.
Christina Koliander, Managing Editor, The Morgan Horse.......2005-01-22
Once again, Ellen Feld has written a wonderful tale for readers young and old. The third in her series, from the first page Feld brings to life Heather Richardson and her Morgans and friends. I'm sorry I didn't have books like these to read when I was a young reader! A pure delight!
Better By The Book.......2004-12-16
Ellen Feld has found a niche and her craftsmanship gets better by the book......so you'd better buy this book.
Her characters are exactly who I'd like my grandchildren to be. They are delightful, unspoiled and have great values........and it's those values, preached from an accessible pulpit of horsemanship, that make her books the more valuable for parents to support.
Ms. Feld has built a base of characters with whom the reader becomes engaged and is interested in knowing more about.
I'm sure that as further books are written, we will learn more about Heather and Nicholas..........who they are outside the world of stables and horse shows......and, to this, I look forward.
It's wonderful to watch a young writer develop.

Robin, the fourth book in the "Morgan Horse" Series, introduces the character of Karen Greene and her Morgan, the lovable Robin. An avid horse-lover, Karen is traumatized by a traumatic riding accident. Can Heather, Nicholas, and the horses of Gallant Morgans help Karen overcome her fear so that she can once again enjoy her horse? This story also introduces Robin's sidekick, the adorable gray and white pinto Miniature Horse Rerun, and Champ, the small Dachshund puppy with a big attitude.

Wonderful equine experience for the reader.......2006-05-06
Reviewed by Kim and Sean Peterson for Reader Views (5/06)
Karen Greene gives in to peer pressure. Wanting to be accepted, she agrees to ride a horse that demands more skill than she possesses. When she and the other teens ride the trail, Karen struggles to control the uncooperative horse, Comet. Her poor choice and the sudden appearance of a dirt bike on the trail place horse and rider in danger. When the frightened horse bolts, Karen and Comet suffer injuries in a traumatic accident on the nearby road. Although her body recovers, nightmares and lack of confidence plague her. Karen fears riding her own gentler Morgan horse, Robin.
Karen's parents decide to move Robin to a different training facility, Gallant Morgans, with the hope that their daughter will find a way to overcome her fear of riding horses. The less intimidating atmosphere exposes the teen to new friends, including Heather Richardson who helps the owner Chauncy train horses for show and for the trail.
As the humans, horses and other animals at Gallant Morgans help her overcome the apprehension about riding, they also encourage the redeveloping bond between Karen and Robin. The mare doesn't take advantage of Karen's trepidation, but is the essence of patience as her young owner strives to re-master the skills that have seemingly abandoned her.
As volunteer horse caretakers at a local therapeutic riding facility, we feel that Feld accurately portrays both the responsibilities of caring for a horse, as well as the special bond developed through time spent together. Girls (and guys) who long for the full equine experience will savor this fourth story in the Morgan Horse series.
Ellen Feld's Morgan Horse series continues to enchant the reader.......2006-04-01
All I can say is, I wish I were a teenage girl again, because this series would have been on my bookshelf right up there with the Black Stallion series, the "Flicka" series, Marguerite Henry, and all the other horse books that were close to my heart. I recommend starting with "Blackjack" and reading the series through in order, as you can see the characters, both human and equine, grow and learn, and new characters add a new dimension, just as they do in real life. The best part is, as I can testify as an owner of 5 Morgans, the equine episodes in the books are realistic. Morgans really ARE like the horses in the books. And as a mother of 3 teenage girls in the past, I can also testify that the girls in the books are very much like the adolescent girls that filled my house all those years ago. Even though I am WELL beyond my teenage years, I can't wait for the next book in the series - I hope it is as exciting and uplifting as "Robin". Knowing this series, I am sure it will be!
Robin: The lovable mogan horse.......2006-03-30
Once again Ellen is right on the mark when it comes to a believable story with the delicious overtones of whimsy and fantasy that horses conjure up in all of us. All of Ellen's books are worthy additions to any library of children's classics, and are a recommended read for all ages and genders. We await more additions to the trusty list!
Gotta love Robin the Morgan Horse!.......2006-03-30
Ellen Feld zooms me back to my childhood and memories of riding with my friends. Yep, we did some crazy things with our horses...and so many times it was a result of peer pressure. Our horses, like the Morgan horse Robin, seemed to know better and were there to help teach us so many valuable lessons. Ellen's story takes hold of this reality and addresses it with a mature hand and detail that floods the senses with the smell of horses and leather, the sounds of hoofbeats and laughter, the sight of green grass and wonderful Morgan horseflesh, the feel of the reins and a freshly-curried coat, and the sheer bliss of spending time with horses and friends. I have to wait (somewhat impatiently) while my son finishes each new book that Ellen writes!
Robin: The Lovable Morgan Horse.......2006-03-30
This is a great book for horse crazy people, children and adults. Well written. Ellen keeps getting better and better, her Morgan horse books are something any teenage girl would want, and adult horse lovers too. Highly recommended. All three books in this series are EXCELLENT!!

Joel Goss knows that Little Bub is a special colt, even though he's a runt. And when school teacher Justin Morgan asks Joel to break the colt in, Joel is thrilled! Soon word about Little Bub has spread throughout the entire Northeast -- this spirited colt can pull heavier loads than a pair of oxen. And run faster than thoroughbreds!
This is the story of the little runt who became the father of a world-famous breed of American horses -- the Morgan.

Another Great Book from Marguerite Henry.......2006-02-24
I couldn't put it down! So fast-paced I was finished in a jiffy! This story is about a small colt that no one thought was worth anything because of his tiny size. When he grew up he became known for his strength and quickness. True story about how the race of Morgan horses started!
Justin Morgan Had a Horse, by Marguerite Henry -- A wonderful book for kids to read: Highly Reccommended.......2006-01-07
"Justin Morgan Had a Horse," by Marguerite Henry is a book with three main characters: Justin Morgan, Joel Goss, and Little Bub. One day when Joel was a small boy, he was with Justin Morgan, a Vermont schoolmaster, at a farm in Springfield, Illinois. The owner of the farm, Farmer Beane had borrowed money from schoolmaster Justin Morgan, and the reason Morgan was there was to collect the money. Farmer Beane, who didn't yet have the money, offered Morgan two horses: Ebenezer, a large horse; and Little Bub, a small colt. When Joel and Justin Morgan got back to thier home in Vermont, Morgan sold Ebenezer, and let Joel break in Little Bub. One day a man wanted to rent Little Bub, and Morgan accepted. Little Bub worked hard for the man, and when the lease ended, Morgan rode Little Bub throughout Vermont on a singing circuit. But one day a sad thing happened. Joel received a letter telling that Justin Morgan was very sick and is going to die! After Justin Morgan died nobody knew where Little Bub went! Until one day...well...I'll let you find out by reading the story!
A wonderful book........2003-07-13
This is a special book to me, as it was the book upon which my son's first book report was written about a dozen years ago. It was also the last time he needed my collaboration on a school project.
The story is a nice introduction to American History and to the world of horses, both of which continue to interest him as he heads off to an Ivy-laden college this fall.
Growing Big Together.......2003-02-06
I must be romping through my third childhood because I still love this classic equine tale about the founder of a truly
American breed of horse. I enjoyed it now just as much as when I was young; Henry's story holds up with successive readings
since the human emotions are sincere, and the dramatic events are true. The young protagonist, Joel, has a passion for horses; as a young man he dreams of finding his beloved, Lil Bub, the first Morgan colt whom no one wanted.
Even more, this is a story of Vermont--famous for its Green Mountains and courageous patriots--during the War of 1812. Later on in the story we witness a brief but triumphant presidential visit, where the Morgan horse was publically recognized.
Plenty of dialogue, short chapters and excellent b/w sketches by Wesley Dennis combine to give us a delightful gallop into the Yankee past. No one knows for certain who sired the "little" colt, whom only a poor boy could admire, but tales of his racing speed and pulling strength quickly made him a local legend, with farmers eager to get stud rights. Like BLACK BEAUTY this book is written for kids and horse lovers of all ages. PS: Because they are so strong and fast, Morgans are used in the National Park Service.
