good book of cat patterns.......2007-09-28
This is a great book for cat lovers if you are looking for whimsical patterns not realistic patterns. I especially like the tesselation patterns.
I love quilts. I love cats. But this is a coffee table quilting design book........2006-02-13
I'm sure that you have a few cookbooks in your collection that you enjoy, but for some reason you never do get around to cooking from them. Maybe the ingredients are hard to get, or you have a simpler recipe in another cookbook. There's nothing wrong with those cookbooks; they're fun, pretty, inspirational. It's just a reading-cookbook rather than a regular instruction book.
To my surprise, that's how I feel about Cat's Meow: Purr-fect Quilts for Cat Lovers. As a devoted cat person, and an enthusiastic (if not anywhere near expert) quilter, I had hoped to find several quilts that would let me indulge in more than one of my passions. However, every time I flip through the pages of this book... well, I end up cooking something else for dinner, so to speak.
I'm not completely sure why; perhaps it's because the designs expect you to use a lot of scraps (I'm not a scrap quilter), or they're just an eensy bit too cutesy. It might also be that, to my mild surprise, none of the designs are suited to use all the kitty fabrics that I've been collecting. Probably, the main reason that I haven't felt compelled to use any of these designs is that the instructions aren't completely clear; it doesn't give me a sense of confidence that this will come together sensibly.
I don't dislike the book; it deserves its 4 stars, and I've no intention of giving it away. On the other hand, I'm not worrying that I'll wear out the book's binding.
great ideas.......2005-09-05
Clear instructions and great ideas. I used the idea of matching cats and spools, but changed it to dogs and bones.
Great book for quilters who love cats!.......2002-11-19
This book is SO CUTE! Even if you don't make a quilt from it, it makes you feel good just looking through it. The colors are happy and the patterns aren't hard. Good instructions and designs and inspiration from Janet Kime! It's one of my top five favorite quilt books--I love it!
cats, cats, cats.......2000-12-19
this is the best book for the cat lover. I even found a pattern inside for dogs. My mother and I worked on these projects together. we have created numerous pillows, and wall hangings useing this book.

Five Tails Up!.......2000-06-26
Pawsibly the best primer on the market for comprehending the feline psyche. I always suspected there was more going on behind those half-closed eyes and langourously-swishing tails, than mere thoughts of kibble and gravy. And this book's a riot, too! Beware, Confucious. If Michael Kent gets inspired, you're...Confurcious?
Philosophical paradise for cats of all ages........2000-05-05
This book is a must read for all cat lovers that provides a wonderful blend of philosophy and humor that will have you reflecting on life at one moment and laughing out loud the next. As the wise Meow Tzu so eloquently puts it "you can't keep a good cat down".

Meow Te Ching.......2000-04-07
I really enjoyed the translations of Oriental wisdom and sayings into felinese by Mr. Kent. Typical sayings such as "If you want to climb a tree, you must begin at the bottom" and "The cat that knows others is clever, but the cat that knows himself is enlightened" brought smiles to my face.

A Purr-fectly Marvelous Compendium of Kitty Lore.......2007-01-19
Clever rhymes and concise text descriptions of the many varieties of cat behavior, eccentricities and general information make this book a joy both for children and adults who love cats. The outstanding artwork complements the text. Most adults will learn additional interesting facts about cats; in fact, some will read it first just for their own enjoyment before sharing it with children. A truly outstanding work for cat lovers of all ages.
Book Description
The Silent Meow
Mature, responsible, well-adjusted females know that it's natural to expect some changes as the years go by and calmly accept that "to everything there is a season." But the whimsical, womaly, and anything-but-sedate cats of Menopaws offer another approach - let down your fur, embrace the Change, and live your lives to the fullest.
This book offers two dozen solutions to common menopausal (or menopawsal) problems. Night sweats? Sleep naked! Gaining weight? Celebrate! With colorful cats illustrating every one of these helpful hints and a detailed bibliography listing slightly more sensible resources for dealing with menopause, this book is both fun and functional.

Isn't Aging Fun.......2007-09-10
What an entertaining book. My wife and I ordered several copies for female friends who are experiencing , or who have experienced ,the joys of the female aging process.
A much needed laugh.......2002-08-18
I am a Cat lover so I was immediatly attracted to this book by the illustrations. I bought the first copy for my sister who is going through early menopause. She loved it ...I think it was the first time she was able to laugh at some of the things she was feeling. It's very well written with a great sense of humor ! I have since given this book to several friends. A great gift for someone in need of a smile !!
Great Party Gift.......2002-06-20
I bought this book a few years ago and thought it was hysterical then. Since then I continue to buy more books for friends and family because everyone needs a good laugh when they are going through "the change." This year I gave a dozen "Menopaws, The Silent Meow" books to a group of women who came to a class reunion. Not only was it a great ice-breaker... but everyone agreed is was fun and thoughtful. I recommend that all the women out there consider buying this book for their next luncheon or their class reunion. It's a real hoot!!!
A Hilarous Tail.......2002-06-20
I absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED this book! I have not laughed so hard in years! This is the kind of book that you keep on the coffee table and read over and over again. I have read "Menopaws: The Silent Meow" often and it cracks me up everytime...
FORGET IT!.......2002-06-13
I noticed this book as I was browsing for information about menopause. I
purchased it thinking a good laugh would be a welcome thing! If a giggle
was had, it was solely a result of the adorable drawings. I actually winced
at a few of the comments. A definite DON'T BOTHER!

Douglas Florian (Insectlopedia, The Mammalabilia) is at it again. The 21 poems and paintings in his new collection, Bow Wow Meow Meow, will tickle young dog and cat loversand just about everyone else, too. Florian's painting of a poodle, essentially a riot of curls and a pink hair bow, accompanies a four-line concrete poem cleverly typeset in swirls on the opposite page:
Poodles have oodles and oodles of curls,
Which makes poodle boys look like poodle girls.
The curls may have whirls, while the whirls may have swirls.
Poodles have oodles and oodles of curls.
Florian has fun with bulldogs, pointers, Siamese, and Manx, but he doesn't limit himself to domestic breeds. Wolves, lions, and ocelot ("Why ocelots have lots of spots puzzles ocelot") are also featured. All the paintings have wonderful juvenile appeal-many of them are flat-out funny-and the leopard painting, in particular, is worth the price of the book. In fact, you may need two copies: one for framing and one to savor with the kids. (All ages) --Jennifer Lindsay

My 5-year-old granddaughter had me read it over and over. Now she quotes it. I think she has the whole thing memorized.
Bow Wow Meow Meow poem book is wow wow!.......2006-03-15
Hi! You can call me StoryMaker. Bow Wow Meow Meow is a great and unique poem book that focuses on cats, dogs, and their relatives. When we got it from the library, it was a much darker pink then it is in the Amazon.com photo. I memorized many poems in it. There are great illustrations and on the back, you will probably see two paintings, one of a cat and one of the dog. If you look closely, the dog has the word "cat" written on it and the cat has the word "dog" on it. An example of one of the poems is:
"Who always yanks the tail of the Manx?"
Short poem, isn't it? Here's another short one:
"Why ocelots have lots of spots puzzles oc-elot."
Don't worry, that's not as long as they get. For example, "Dog Log" is much longer, therefore I haven't memorized it. Great poems and lots of humor, too. However, I do not like how they insult bulldogs in their bulldog poem. Everyone is giving bulldogs a bad reputation because long ago bulldogs held on to bull's noses and were swung around. Bulldogs are nicer nowadays. Overall, a nice poem book all about pets, wolves, and every type of wild cat. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

As always, Mr. Florian writes and illustrates poetry on a young child's level. His poetry is short and to the point, and his illustrations are extremely creative. "The Poodles" and "The Dalmatian" is a great example of utilizing the features of the animal in the poem format. Mr. Florian gets young children excited about poetry and shows them that poetry can be uncomplicated and fun.

Twenty-one brief, humorous poems.......2003-04-07
Poet and painter Douglas Florian barks up the right tree in the young people poetry month release, "Bow Wow Meow Meow: It's Rhyming Cats and Dogs." Twenty-one brief, humorous poems about a kennel of dog and cat varieties playfully prowl its pages, accompanied by childlike watercolor portraits of each species being analyzed in verse. (Another quirky pleasure comes from the fact that Florian's loose, playful watercolors were painted on primed brown paper bags with bits of collage.) Setting the stage for the book's first half is "Dog Log" with its deadpan "to do" list of the average dog: "Rolled out of bed./ Scratched my head./ Brought the mail./ Wagged my tail.../ Chewed a shoe --/ Table, too." The next ten spreads all focus on a different doggie from the bulldog to wolf. Typical is "The Chihuahua" which manages to hilariously evoke the sound of the little beast: "Chihuahua seems a sorry sight:/ So small in stature, weight, and height./ But it can bark a brouhaha: / Chi-hua! hua! hua! hua! hua! hua! hua!" Segregating the cats from the dogs, the second half is devoted to the felines, starting with the lilting "Cat Chat" introduction, and ends with "The Black Panther": "Black on black / With big eyes green --- / At night the panther's sight is keen,/ A stalking shadow, sly and sleek,/ That every night plays hide-and-seek." As a poetry collection, this is the best-conceived, least-pretentious and most-fun work in years. The idea is simplicity at its best, perfectly conceived and cleverly executed with a just-right balance of smarts and playfulness. The witty, insightful nature of the poems is sure to delight all ages, particularly fans of ee cummings, Ogden Nash and Bennett Cerf. Even concrete poetry admirers will pleasantly note the subtly original ways in which simple type layouts are occasionally used to enhance the rhythms and rhymes, such as the lines of "The Poodles" which are each set in a tight swirl, mimicking their subject's "oodles and oodles or curls." Doggone good. To borrow a pun from Florian, it would "puzzle ocelot" if this didn't end up an award-winner by year's end.
Book Description
Every millenium produces its own original thinkersbrave, independent sages who look at life from completely fresh perspectives and leave behind them a glorious legacy of truth and wisdom for the benefit of us all. Such is the case again with "The Tao of Meow," a collection of 81 reflections on life and the way to total self-gratification as only a cat can tell it.
Any resemblance between these verses and the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu is entirely deliberate and indicates that you are a discerning reader.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious, and thought provoking.......2003-08-28
This book is, quite simply, a masterpiece. It manages, at one time, to be a book that anyone who has ever owned (or been owned by!) a cat will find laughing-out-loud funny while at the same time being a fascinating look at Lao Tzu's classic 'Tao Te Ching'.
Each of the poems in Tao of Meow have a lot of similarities to 'Tao Te Ching', which makes the book a fascinating dialogue with Lao Tzu's work. It's an interesting way to gain some new understanding of it. All philosophy should be studied with such a sense of irreverent joy!
This is a book that you'll want to own and have on hand so that you can thumb through it -- either to learn or to laugh -- again and again.
Translation by a Master.......2000-10-25
There have been many translations of the Tao Te Ching, but who better to do it than a cat? Cats just naturally understand the wisdom of the Tao. Although this is categorized as a humour book, and is very funny, it in fact a good interpretation of the Tao. Yes, it is meant to be read by humans.
Besides, this book is worth buying just for the sweet picture on the cover.
Look at life from a cat's point of view.......1998-02-20
If you have ever been owned by a cat, you have probably wondered what your pet is thinking at those moments when their smug, aloof feline behavior has you endlessly opening and closing doors, worrying over what cat food will entice their taste buds, or hoping they will come and play with you today. Carl Japikse's cat, Waldo, provides us with many wonderful insights into cat thinking. "The Tao of Meow" is full of anecdotes and cat tales about the simple, common-sense thinking that gives cats access to nine lives, while we, as their faithful nameless ones, have but one life to live in service to them. "Tao of Meow" is a series of 81 short poetry-like pieces reflecting cat thoughts on subjects that range from cats raiding rabbit nests, through a cat's view of human luggage, to insights on what control really means. "Tao" is funny and thought-provoking. Many of Waldo's guideliens for everyday cat living serve as excellent advice for how we humans can live our lives more effectively. This book is a must for anyone who has loved cats and been mystified by their uncanny knack for controlling our human behavior.

Your Cat;'s Just Not That into you:"What part of Meow Don't Your Understand.......2007-08-22
I thought this book was hilarious and I love cats. It was meant to be a humorous parody of the human to human relationship books out there. It does stereotype cat behaviours, similar to the self help-relationship books that stereotype gender behaviors. That was the spirit in which it was intended since many of us view our relationship with our pets, similar to our other human relationships.
I think the reviewers that gave this a low rating need to lighten up.
Awful.......2006-08-05
I thought I was buying a book that would give me insight into my cat's world. What I got was a joke book and the punchline is always "Your cats just not that into you." Ok, I get it. I guess I'll take the author's advice and take her to the spa, and drop this book off in a donation bin along the way.
humorous but redundant.......2006-02-25
This book is written from the point of view of someone who doesn't like cats. It's amusing but not laugh-out-loud funny.
Very Funny - Easy to Read - Many Laughs.......2005-09-23
My cat wrote this review. He says, "What I like most about books is that, if you lay on one, people tend to stop reading and pet you. I plopped down on top of this one and it felt pretty comfortable. Sure enough, my pet human stopped and gave me a great massage. She says the book explains why we cats can be aloof and disdainful. It has many "Dear Abby" type letters, classified ads, advice and definitions.
One classified ad read, "If you're submissive, read on. Upbeat, Rubenesque Maine Coon seeks good home with endlessly giving, insecure owner who'll try to please me even when I'm having a hissy fit. The right owner will never assume he's doing too much for his pet, or experience moral outrage if I "get lucky" with a gopher. Let's have lunch and talk."
This book also offers a peek into a cat's mind and offers other advice that our humans ought to know. Hey, my human is still laughing over it -- so it must be good. Besides, I like to see my pets amused. You might want to educate your pet humans with this book, too."
Book Description
On a clear, sunny day, a small adventure begins. First, a dog slips joyfully out of his house. Next a car pulls up to the curb, leaving a white cat alone. Then, slowly, a storm begins to brew over the park. Watch as an unlikely friendship takes shape in this one-of-a-kind book that combines story, art, and delightful concrete poetry.

What a wonderfully intelligent, creative, and charming book! The text and illustrations support each other so well, in a truly unique way. Subtle text and visual clues cue the reader into a guessing game of "what's going to happen next?" My six year old son has been looking through this book incessantly since we got it, and it is an absolute delight to read together. This is one of those books that I want to give to all of my friends. It's a new family favorite.

Picture A Poem.......2006-05-04
Finding poetry that breaks free of the monotony of rhyming couplets or Seuss rip-offs is hard to do, so I feel obligated to highlight anything that holds up to repeated scrutiny.
Few poetry books are quite like this multi-layered story about a cat and a dog making friends during a rain shower.
Sidman wrote it as concrete poetry, where the lines take shape as pictures. Watch for free verses buried in the grass or woven among leaves and branches or circling the cat and dog.
She found a fortuitous partner in Berg, who used simple shapes and flat colors to keep our focus on the words. But the best feat is with the typography, a favorite trick of graphic designers even when it's not so central to the storytelling.
A cloud starts out with a few pale, wispy words:
just
a tiny puff
a swirl of frosting-
cloud
and builds to a bold-faced, fat crescendo:
THUNDER-PLUMPED SEETHING MASS OF GLOOMY FUMING
BLACK BOTTOMED STORM BREWING
This one's kept my son busy hunting threads of the story and he can't even read.
