3 out of 5 stars Good basic guide for the begginer.......2000-11-15

"The Guide to owning Dwarf Rabbits" is a good basic guide to the first time rabbit owner. This book covers topics like Housing, feeding and health. "The Guide to Owning Dwarf Rabbits" is written in an easy to understand style and contains all you need to know for your first rabbit, but is not very in depth for those with rabbit experience.

3 out of 5 stars Can hopefully find something better.......2005-04-03

I have owned snakes but just bought my first ball python. I picked up this book at the pet store and read it cover to cover--a couple of times over. While it offers some good information to start, it leaves out so much. It leaves out common sense info that the new ball python owner will search high and low for. Such as: what do those rotten little mites REALLY look like, what are some real ways to REALLY get rid of them, what humidity level to really strive for--in actual numbers, when the first shed will occur, the fact that they are supposed to have "wrinkled corneas" (he didn't fail to shed his eyeball), how to gauge when your baby ball is ready to move from fuzzies to hoppers to adults, etc. After doing a lot of day-to-day research to supplement this average book, we found a FABULOUS vet who has personally owned and cared for hundreds upon hundreds of ball pythons. (If you live in/near Murrieta, CA, email me for her contact info.) I am really looking for a new book that will give me more confidence and comfort that I am caring for my sweet snake much more properly. And thank goodness for my vet!!

2 out of 5 stars Buy a better book called `the ball python manual`.......2000-08-07

I read both books. Whenever I encounter problems , I refer to the ball python manual. Many pictures posted are Boa constrictors. All the informations in this book can be found in web sites.

3 out of 5 stars Okay book........2000-02-17

This is a good book to own but should not be the first in your collection. It has excellent photos and can be very good for a reference but I find some of the information in it is inaccurate compared to other sources of information, which is why I don't think it should be your first Ball Python book.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Library for Ball Python Owners.......2000-02-03

The Guide to Owning a Ball Python and The Ball Python Manual form the cornerstones for the Ball Python Owner's Library. Both are available here at a great price. The hi-res pictures and information found in this book, combined with the information in the Ball Python Manual are informative and everything you need to know about your Ball or Regal or Royal Python.

5 out of 5 stars a good book for beginers and experienced snake keepers.......1999-08-21

    2 out of 5 stars Inaccurate.......2006-03-04

This book is full of information but unfortunately gives some very poor advice for any rat owner. Pine and cedar will both cause respiratory problems in rats, which can lead to ill health and secondary infections. Also, many of the pictures in this book are of mice.

If you buy this book, please keep in mind - no pine or cedar bedding for rats! Much better is The Rat (An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet) by Ginger Cardinal (Howell Book House) or Rats! (A Fun & Care Book) by Debbie Ducommun (Bowtie Press) .

    5 out of 5 stars great advice!!!.......2003-06-05

The author knows what she is talking about. You can tell that she has had a lot of experience with her own rats, has done the necessary research, has talked with other experts in the care and breeding of rats, and presents the information so that everyone can understand it. For the reviewer who commented on the "suggestion" that pine shavings be used, it should be understood that there is a lot of controversy about the use of cedar/pine shavings and when the book was published in 1996, the "experts" were still having their discussions about the subject. As far as the few photos of mice, it is unfortunate that the publishers did include them but that does not lessen the impact of the valuable information in the book. I learned a lot about rats from this book, which has more information in it than many other books on the subject. It's a great book, and people just starting out with pet rats will find it to be a great reference, one they will refer to many times.

    1 out of 5 stars BAD ADVICE!.......2003-03-18

This book is full of bad advice. She recommends using Pine which is almost as bad for rats as Cedar is! And some of the pictures in the book are of mice, not rats. ...

I found this great for me when I got my rats since i knew little or nothing about them. Now that i have had them a few years and have gone online for info. I can tell you, it's a great guide for NEWBIES but I also found there to be as much info online.
If i read it now, i would say tell me something I dont know. But, if you have never owned one of the cutties..this is the bible of rats

4 out of 5 stars good for newbies.......2001-12-12

If you know nothing about owning a rattie then this is the book for you. I knew essentially nothing so this was a great book. I must say, If you already have read up on owning a rat on the internet then you already know everything in this book.
I feel the internet had as much if not more info.
But the price was right and incase my computer goes down, it's helpful

    2 out of 5 stars Very poor quality book . . . . .......2007-01-20

I breed fancy mice for a hobby, and bought this book as part of my mouse book collection. It is, by far, the poorest book ever written for the mouse owner. It just has the bare basics for mouse care, and sometimes not even that. Anyone just getting a mouse for a pet will be a little confused by this book, and I was ( and I have experience with mice!) In short, there are other books out there that are better! Don't waste your money.

    1 out of 5 stars Great Pictures--Skip the Rest.......2002-01-07

Lots of beautiful, glossy, color pictures of mice being mice--if you don't own them before buying this book you'll want to become a mouse owner. Other than that, the content is extremely basic. The first 15 pages (without pictures, it might be 4 pages of text) are an introduction to the mouse at a very basic level. The next 15 pages covers a range of different rodents (lemmings, moles, voles) that are of little relevance to those who own or breed fancy mice. The information in the rest of the book (take this example "feed your mice well but do not overfeed") is probably useful information for anyone who has no previous experience with rodents but is at an extremely basic level. There is very little detailed information, there are information gaps (for instance, I don't believe there is anything in the book on sexing mice--or determining the difference between male and female--something any first-time owner would find to be critical information). And there is some misleading information as well (pictures of mice on pine bedding--something that is harmful for them) while the book specifically recommends "softwood" beddings (such as pine and cedar). In short, the pictures are entertaining but the information in this book is not sufficient for any new mouse owner and anyone who has owned a mouse previously will find no new information in it and some obviously wrong details.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful seeking advice..........2006-08-14

...from any of this author's books...Ms. Barrie was just the publisher's secretary...the publisher is Herb Axelrod and under cross-examination during litigation against him Ms. Barrie said whenever Axelrod assigned her to do a book she just went to the library for references and then spent a week writing each one...Axelrod ultimately was sentenced to 18 months in prison for tax evasion and Ms. Barrie is now working as a dental hygienist...Axelrod carries some weight among fish fans but I'd be cautious about taking advice from any of Ms. Barrie's books.

    1 out of 5 stars Outdated information.......2002-04-08

The information contained in the book is outdated and could be hazardous to your hamster. "White shaving" aka pine shavings are a no-no due to potential respiratory problems. The wire wheel, is also a no-no. Every year, many hamsters are seriously injured by wire wheels. There are better, much more up to date books that give safer information than this book!

I was hoping to find more info on litter training, behavior, and other important house rabbit topics, but this title doesn't help much. I was also hoping for better coverage of common diseases, such as wool block, gi stasis, etc. It seems more focused on those who want to relegate the rabbit to the backyard, not to the modern rabbit owner.

I found Marinell Harriman's "House Rabbit Handbook" to be much more useful.

    1 out of 5 stars "EMI" .......2006-02-22

This book is not a good book it gives wrong info and needs to be updated.

    1 out of 5 stars Dangerous info.......2004-02-19

It is hard to sum up everything wrong in this book. I would give it zero stars if I could have.
Most of the advice is not only wrong but dangerous to the health and well being of cavies.
Here are a few of the many points that are wrong, misleading or dangerous:
    1. The nutritional advice will produce a very sick pig. Please don't feed your pigs eggs, cheese, cakes, cookies and seeds. They can choke on seeds, nuts are too fattening and refined sweets will make them ill. The book somewhat puts down pellets (and suggests a couple of aforementioned odd homemade concoctions) and yet good quality Guinea pig pellets, along with fresh veggies, are the best way to insure you pig has a balanced diet with Vitamin C, essential for GP's. Hay is also essential and yet there is almost nothing mentioned and no discussion of the various types.
    2. Shows a pig in a wire bottom cage. Piggies get thier legs caught and broken in wire bottom cages PLUS the cages shown are way too small. Go to www.Cavycages.com and make you own cheaper and better than you can buy premade!
    3. States pigs should be housed separately. This is not true. Pigs are very social animals and need to be with thier own kind. While two adult boars MAY fight, most sows and many boars get along just fine. Of course, house the boars and sows separately unless you want LOTS of little piggies!
    2. Shows a rabbit and guinea pig together and says they "get along". It is doubtful they would fight, that is true, but rabbits have powerful back legs and one jump could kill or injure a piggie. They should not be housed together at the very least.
    3. Calling a photo of a Guinea Pig a "hamster" just proves that no proof reading by a knowledgable person was done. That is just sloppy and unprofessional.
    4. The breeding section never mentions that a sow must be bred before she is 10 months old (IF she is ever going to be bred)because her pelvic bones will fuse at about 12 months, resulting in dead mother and babies in a first pregnancy after that time. This book implies that pigs are not fully mature until 12 months and not at full weight until 18 months, leaving a novice to think it best to wait until then. Very dangerous. Hopefully, no decent person would attempt to breed any animal solely on the information in one chapter in one small book anyway, but this advice will kill your pigs.
There is more but I simply do not have room to correct all the misleading and dangerous info. Suffice to say, with this much hazardous advice, this book should not even be on the market. SHAME on the ASPCA for giving it a seal of approval.
Read "The Proper Care Of Guinea Pigs" by Peter Gurney and/or "Guinea Pig Handbook " by Dr. Sharon Vanderlip or check Internet sites for safe, appropriate care of cavies.

1 out of 5 stars Waist of Time & Money.......2001-09-04

I bought this book thinking that I'd learn something new, but was very disapointed. The author gives you some info about the topics he's interested in, but fails to give you info about other things. For example, he goes on and on about building your own cages ect., but tells you very little about guinea pig breeding in the chapter he titled "Practical Breeding". Like someone else mentioned, he did right "hamster" instead of guinea pig at one part, which realy bothered me! He also has a lot of unrelated pictures and sometimes put the same picture twice! There are very nice pictures but most of them were of the same breeds (or same guinea pigs), which isn't helpful for those who want to learn about the many different guinea pig breeds. I think this is a very incomplete book. I'm new to guinea pigs, but this book told me very little I hadn't or couldn't have found out about online. I recommend basic reaserch or buying a different book if you want to find out about all aspects of cavies [guinea pigs]. If you still want to buy this book, you can buy mine because I'm going to sell it.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-08-29

For a book with an ASPCA seal of approval, I was very disappointed. The pictures showed guinea pigs on wire bottom cages (very back for their little feet), recommended cedar shavings (another no no) and on pg38 captioned a picture of a guinea pig "The more unique the color variety of your hamster..." It advised housing mutliple cavies in separate cages (this is a herd animal...please) Returned the book in 24 hours. Baron's is a better choice any day.

    1 out of 5 stars Well...the pictures are nice.......2006-03-27

I bought this book because it was the only one at a local pet store. I knew there were others, but I figured I was saving on shipping and handling. Well, other than pictures galore, I should have just gotten a book with real information. At least twice Barrie says two chins of the same sex should NEVER be housed together...come again? Anyway, I suppose this is okay for the casual reader or picture-hound, but for pete's sake: don't waste the 7 or 8 bucks if you really want helpful information.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2005-09-22

Do yourself a favor and click on the link above for the author's other books. Note that she has written books on hamsters, koi, gerbils, parrots, and conures.

I am truely amazed that the author is an authority on so many different animals. I have been breeding chinchillas for well over five years and I have rarely seen so much inaccurate information in one book.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money, please, do it for your chinchilla.......2005-02-16

This book is the biggest pile of garbage available for those who are actually interested in ACCURATE information on caring for their chinchilla. If you want to get a book with misinformation to the extreme, then by all means, buy it, but don't say I didn't warn you. The glaring innacuracies, poorly cared for specimens and DANGEROUS information in this book make it just the sort of pitfall a new chin- person should avoid. However, being new to chinchillas as pets, most will not know any better. For a full list of the problems with this book, I'd recommend looking at this website : [...]
You'll find it under the reviews section.

I bought this book, and was pretty disgusted by the inaccuracies. It is sadly common in pet books and it makes it difficult for new owners to separate the wheat from the chaff. After all, it was printed, so it MUST be true... *sigh* You'll get more accurate information on chinchillas from a Google search than from this book.

If my review sounds harsh, there is good reason. Chinchillas are fragile, exotic animals and their proper care is important, not just for their well- being, but for their survival. They are not pets that should be purchased on impulse or without a good general knowledge of what care they need, and, unfortunately, in this book, for every piece of good information on chin care that is included there are ten pieces of incorrect and sometimes downright dangerous information.

Please, save your money, for your chinchillas sake.

    4 out of 5 stars Wondeful!.......2000-05-01

This book cotains lots of important info. and glossy pictures. The more you read, the more you find yourself in a chinchilla's colourful world.

2 out of 5 stars Better books are out there! Though this looks good, it's not.......1999-01-23

There are several health, behavioral and care mistakes in this books, subtile, so that an uninformed owner would miss them. I've been recommended not to buy this book by several petstores who are required to carry a 'complete' line of ferret books. 'Training your Ferret' and 'Ferrets, a complete guide to a healthy happy pet' are both superior books to this one in accuracy and up to date knowledge (many facts in this book are out of date!)
