Book Description
KEEPING LIVESTOCK HEALTHY is one of the recognized classics in its field. Small Farmer's Journal called it "a major contribution to available farm veterinary literature." Modern Veterinary Practice wrote: ". . . highly recommended to all livestock owners." And Farmstead Magazine said, "So admirably organized and indexed that its information is instantly available."
Now completely revised and updated, this fourth edition draws on the very latest research from experts on each of the five animals covered - horses, cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep. It presents new information on vaccines, artificial insemination, ultrasonography, disease testing, drug treatments, and diseases such as Lyme disease, Potomac fever, bluetongue, foot-and-mouth disease, and mad cow disease. This complete reference on livestock health is an invaluable guide to preventing disease through good nutrition, proper housing, and appropriate care.

Vet student review.......2006-09-23
This book has an overview of diseases for most domestic large animals. I found this text to be too general to be very helpful as a reference guide for folks needing all the details. It does have some decent rule out lists.
Book Description
ho are these 'guinea pig scientists'? Searching for clues to some of science's and medicine's bigger (and sometimes stranger) questions, they are all the men and women who devoted their lives to help find the answers. Spanning from the 1770s to the present-and uncovering the science behind digestion, the spread of yellow fever, the development of the first heart catheter, and more-their ten stories are at once scientifically detailed and fascinatingly personal.

human tests!.......2007-03-11
We all know that inventions must be tested. We hear a lot about testing of product and drugs on animals. But did you know that some humans were and still are willing to be the "guinea pigs". This book is a biography of nine scientist how did just that!
Wonderful examples of how all can understand-do science.......2007-02-11
Found this one on the shelf in a middle school during a conference with a teacher. Amazoned it and only wish that it had been out when I was in school! It's a strong read for little ones, but isn't that what school about?
Fascinating anecdotes.......2006-02-17
Guinea Pig Scientists contains nine chapters, each on a different scientist who made a difference by plaicng themself in harm's way to varying degrees. The book is hardly in depth, but it covers the most important aspects of each scientists methods and what was learned from them. This would be a great book to use to get adolescents interested in scientific inquiry. It is an engaging read, and the gross out factor will bring in even reluctant readers. Be warned: not all of the scientists survive their experiments.
A wonderful introduction.......2005-11-11
Guinea Pig Scientists is a wonderful introduction for putting a face and an exciting story behind a particular science. I expect many children (and adults) to go read further about different topics or the scientists because their appetites have finally been whetted.
A gathering of biographies and discoveries which charts bold experiments which helped change the world .......2005-10-04
Self-experimenters in science and medicine often fostered discoveries and advancements which hastened the invention of much-needed cures, yet are seldom discussed: that's why middle school students will find Guinea Pig Scientists so important. C.B. Mordan provides black and white illustrations to this gathering of biographies and discoveries which charts bold experiments which helped change the world - and risked the lives of scientists.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for beginners, but..........2000-03-28
I found this book to be an excellent resource for beginning my cattle farm. It spells out a lot of necessary things that must be done in order to care for cattle, and other livestock animals. There is, however, a lot of "higher level" biological dialogue that a novice will need to wade through to find the 'just plain english' part. However, don't let this discourage you. It is a very complete book that answers a lot of questions, many, before you even ask.
Book Description
Rabbit medicine is a rapidly expanding area of veterinary practice and rabbits are now the third most popular mammalian pet in the UK. Vets are treating more sick rabbits than ever before, but many vets do not have the clinical experience required to give effective treatment. There is a wealth of information on rabbits available to vets, but much of this is from the laboratory animal field and often isn 't applicable to the pet rabbit.Filling a gap in current literature available on rabbits, this book provides the reader with essential information and guidance on rabbit internal medicine ensuring rabbits are treated to the same standard as canine and feline patients. Along with the other books in the Notes on series, it is specifically designed, through an accessible note-based style, to ensure veterinarians and students have quick and easy access to the most up-to-date clinical and diagnostic information. In this book:Differential diagnosis, by presenting complaint and organ systems;Common laboratory abnormalities and their significance in diagnosis;Infectious diseases, their diagnosis and treatment;Therapeutics, and how treatment varies from that of the more commonly encountered companion animals.

The Biology and Medicine of Rabbits and Rodents.......2000-01-10
The purpose is to provide lab professionals with the advice on the maintenance of rabbits and rodents, concerning their care and health. It covers rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil, mouse and rat. Even though it is intended for *experts*, the book is relatively easy to read and is very thorough starting with the general husbandry and biology, followed by clinical procedures, sign of disease, diagnoses and listing specific diseases and conditions from A-Z. It lists the hosts for the disease, etiology, transmission, predisposing factors, clinical signs, necropsy signs, diagnosis, prevention, effect on research and public health significance. The last chapter has self test with case reports.
Even though this is not an *exotic pet rodent* book, it is a great reference book for any rabbit or rodent pet owner, since most diseases occur in pets as well as in laboratory animals. A nice middle ground between serious technical veterinary books and the common photo pet shop books.
Book Description
A valuable update of the only book dedicated to guinea pig medicine. Written in note form the book assists in the formulation of a diagnostic plan when the practitioner is faced with a sick animal. Sections on clinical signs, diagnoses and treatments, allow rapid reference in successive chapters on the reproductive, digestive, respiratory, musculoskeletal and urinary systems, the skin, head and neck, nervous system and husbandry. A new chapter will provide information on herbal and homeopathic remedies.
Customer Reviews:
Overpriced!.......2006-11-05
For the amount that this "book" cost, I would have expected a hard cover book with many more pages of information. Instead it was soft covered with very little helpful information.
This item is not worth purchasing.
Top Pick of a Guinea Pig Rescue.......2005-11-01
A superb, informative book for those interested in learning more about medical issues that can affect Guinea Pigs. We (TX Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue) recommend this to all our new guinea pig adopters.
not just for the vet!.......1999-06-30
I wish I had this book to hand when my guinea pig became ill a few months a go (see recovered by the way), this is a really good guide for guinea pig breeders/fanciers as well as vets. The only problem is I get so worried reading about all the things that can go wrong!
A "must have" book for all cavy caretakers and companions........1999-01-08
Diseases of Domestic Guinea Pigs is my "Cavy Bible." This a "must have" book for all cavy caretakers and companions who are serious about the proper care, health and disease prevention of their cavy. VCG Richardson, 20 years cavy experience and veterinary surgeon is giving the very best information that cavy caretakers could need or ask for. This book covers all aspects of the cavy, and it is written in scientifical and layman terms. The readability is set for ages 12+. The book covers the skin, reproductive, urinary, respiratory, digestive and musculoskeletal systems; the head and neck, behavior and the central nervous system, cavy husbandry, anaaesthetics, surgical procedures, treatments and zoonotic aspects. This book does not recommend that you, the cavy caretaker, in any way try to replace your cavy veterinarian. This book is an excellent reference when discussing procedures with your vet., or if you want to suggest a second opinion. Don't let this book sit on your shelf, digest every word of it and be thankful to have this information available to you!
