Book Description
Dressage, the equestrian practice in which a horse makes highly precise movements in response to barely perceptible signals from the rider, has taken hold of America’s equestrians. Participation rates have risen by 200 percent over the past twenty years, as baby-boomer riders have discovered dressage to be less strenuous and dangerous than jumping, yet offering the satisfaction of mastering techniques and the opportunity to compete and advance to higher levels of achievement.
101 Dressage Exercises for Horse & Rider, presented in Storey’s highly visual “Read & Ride” format, features a full arena diagram and stepby- step instructions for each exercise. The exercises address all levels of riders, starting with the basics and moving up to maneuvers developed by members of the U.S. Olympic team. Training tips and masterly guidance make this an indispensable reference for all dressage riders. Even Western riders interested in enhancing their performance will find these foundational exercises useful.
Dressage riders are information-hungry readers, often referred to as “the thinking horsemen.” This book’s sturdy format, combbound and drilled so it can be hung on a ringside post, will appeal to these reading riders, whether in or out of the saddle.

I love this book, it is simple for the simple minded. Allowing your brain to open without hurting! lol! So highly recommended!
Exercises make hard work more fun.......2007-09-24
Dressage requires great attention to many small details and a clear head to keep them all straight. 101 Dressage Exercises helps you focus on the details in a fun way. At my barn we often challenge each other to see who can do an exercise most correctly with our trainer as coach and referee. We have ended up riding better becuase we made these into a good-natured game.
Exercises for Dressage.......2007-05-29

It has given me a large number of ideas for warm up, planning my sessions and the exercises to improve my dressage skills.
I just have to make the time to get on with the exercises now.

Disappointed.......2007-07-30
This book was a disappointment to me, I found the formatting to be a huge distraction. The black and white photos are dark, the cartoon graphics are unappealing, and I was expecting it to be more demonstrative and less "block paragraph" and wordy. I have picked it up three times since I bought it and just cannot work my way through it. I'm a visual learner and this book is definitely not overly visual.
If I'd gotten a better "look inside", I would not have purchased this book and gone for one that more clearly illustrated what was being done.
Real help for your riding.......2007-05-21
Ms. Dulak has presented a book that will provide real help for any serious rider. But special help will be found for riders with conformational flaws. That would cover most riders but naturally endowed and gifted riders may also find ways to improve.
I have ridden for 40 plus years with instructors from all over the spectrum and this is the first realistic attempt to help get to the real root of position problems.
I am still working on the exercises and expect it will be some months to be ingrained but I already see improvement in the way my horses go after one month.
This will take committment but any serious rider has plenty of that.
Great Pilates with the Dressage twist.......2007-04-01
I am enjoying this book very much. The explanations are thorough and easy to understand and the relation to Dressage (which is why I began Pilates) is wonderful. I especially like the open leg rocker illustration on the back of a horse now I picture that as I ride around the arena. Gives you a great perspective on what your position on the horse should be and how it should feel. I have great admiration for the athletic abilities of the riders and their horses this book helps me get closer to my horse and sit on him with more confidence and finesse. Thank you Janice
Very useful.......2007-01-28
I have just started using this book, but I can it will be very useful in getting me more fit as a dressage rider.

Olympic medalist Debbie McDonald and her fabulous partner, Brentina, have thrilled crowds the world over with their stunning performances. In her new book, Riding Through, Debbie describes her system for success in dressage and relates her life story: "There is more than one reason that I call this book Riding Through. Of course, first and foremost, riding through is a dressage term, something you strive for as you attempt to get your horse on the aids and moving back-to-front. You have achieved it when everything the two of you do together is one fluid motion, the ultimate of coordination and expression, in which the horse is maximizing his assets. It's all about harmony and correctness, summing up the meaning of dressage in a single short phrase. But "riding through" has other meanings for me as well. I've learned to ride through hard times, on and off a horse, when I thought about giving up. We all have to learn about riding through, because that's the only way we will arrive at our destination, whatever it may be." Even if passage and piaffe aren't your ambition, or you don't want to compete in dressage at any level, the good basic riding skills involved in learning this discipline will help you in whatever you want to do with horses--whether it's improving adjustability for jumping or just having a more pleasurable trail ride. And the challenges will keep you interested while you explore the very special connection that develops between human and horse when you're doing meaningful work together.
Customer Reviews:
I Wanted More.......2007-08-22
Debbie's new book is definitely worth buying if you like dressage. But like it's title, I wanted more connection! The book is more a generalists approach to the sport of dressage. Describing her horse career and switch to dressage, Debbie's story should become a movie!
Later chapters do give dressage pointers. But if you are looking for something new to unlock the secrets of dressage, you won't find very much here. There are some specific exercises and maybe something you haven't tried with your horse; but all in all, this volume is a elementary look at the Olympic rider's career.
The photographs, diagrams and graphic design are EXCELLENT, colorful and a good window into the quest for dressage perfection. However, if you are looking for the exact details on how to teach your horse to piaffe, for example, you will not find it here. So, Debbie, I would have found another title. As such, I give it 6 (out of 10), "horse needs to be more supple and THROUGH. (How many times have we read that under the judges remarks!)"
Must Read for Dressage.......2007-08-10
Debbie is so down to earth and this makes this book an easy read. I love the "check" boxes which explain the hows and whys of riding, training and understanding dressage. After reading the book, it is easy to apply what you have learned to your everyday riding and training.

Jane Savoie shows how basic dressage techniques can be used to improve every horse's athleticism and performance, no matter what the rider's chosen sport.
Customer Reviews:
Worth your time!.......2007-09-26
This book was exactly what I wanted. I've ridden hunters for all of my life but am starting to train in dressage. Though this cover basic dressage work such as turn-on-the-forehand, leg yielding, etc, it gives you details from a dressage point of view. I recommend it for anyone(English or Western) that has a stiff horse in need of suppling work through basic dressage.
Easy to Follow.......2007-08-16
I really enjoyed this book for it's easy to follow exercises and well thoughtout training plan. I can actually see what the author is talking about in my own horses.
Okay but not for me.......2007-03-24
I purchased Cross-Train and More Crossing Training by Jane Savoie about two years ago based on all the 5 star reviews these books received.
Unfortunately, these books were a disappointment to me. I struggled to finish Cross-Train and I never could get into reading More Cross Training. The text, even though helpful to most people, just seemed to drag on for me. Perhaps this was caused by Ms. Savoie's writing style; perhaps it was just me. (I have found Feeling Dressage by Ruth Sabine Schaefer more to my liking.)
On a positive note, these books have many nice pictures and illustrations which many people should find helpful.
essential reading.......2006-03-22
This may be the best "how-to" books on riding I've read. The description of the rider's experience when things work, and when they don't, are true to my experience. And the key points at the end of each section sum things up nicely. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
A book for all horse people.......2006-01-25
I absolutely adore this book. I got it for my birthday a while ago, and if I could only keep one of my horse books it would be this one. She recognizes that some people are "allergic" to Dressage and explains how it can help them. Personally I am a Western Pleasure person but I have found it to be a great help with my horses. I could also really see this being of great help even to gamers. Now I want all of Jane Savoie's books!

If you are a looking for a common-sense approach to dressage to improve your own skills as well as the rideability of your horse, this book is for you.

Re-publication of Articles from Practical Horseman Magazine.......2007-03-03
I'm sure I overlooked the disclaimer, but it appears this book is a compilation of the series of "Practical Horseman" magazine articles that Ms. Gray authored several years back. Still good information, of course, but I wouldn't have purchased that book had I known that. (I saved the magazine articles to a binder, you see.)
Should be a 4.50, but there's no intermediate step on the stars.......2007-01-29
Let me start by saying, I really think this is a good book to have in one's library. Why? In succinct, but not short or even overly brief statements, Lendon Gray provides chunks of information that neither overwhelm nor talk down to the reader.
Having ridden twice in the Olympics, she knows obviously a lot more about dressage than most of us. What makes this book a pleasure is the presentation. She does it on a straight-forward approach as if talking to someone who is on the same level as her. There is a sense of equality between writer and reader's level of knowledge. In other words, she does not come across as a "I know it all and you know nothing."
All the information throughout the 25 lessons are chunked into small pieces, each comes with a succinct heading that gives the reader a clue as to what she will talk about in the next third or so column. What made this book very useful to me are the images of "right / correctly" and "wrong / incorrectly" applied principles. She details what can be done to correct wrong workings in very good depth, which makes this very useful for either between lessons or for those who do not have the opportunity of working with a dressage trainer on a regular basis.
I can recommend this book for most levels of riding, but believe that as with many books, it will be most useful to those who work in Training through lower Level 2 stages. Advanced Level 2 through Grand Prix riders will be far to knowledgeable to get a great deal of use out of this. But for the majority of riders, I think this book is great and it delivers what it set out to do: teach from start of riding to the first competition. It also provides a great place to go back and figure out "what went wrong" to help correct problems that creep up in riding.
Lessons with Lendon.......2006-06-27
The book is well written so the average person who is either starting out or is early in a riding carrer will benefit. I particularly liked the fact that she believes all basic dressage will help in what ever riding carrer you may wish to take. She spells out the riders total responsiblity verses the horse which I found to be very refreshing. I gave it 4 stars only because it was pitched below where I thought the book was based on the reviews.
Lessons with Lendon.......2004-10-28
This book is a reprint of a series Lendon Grey did for Practical Horseman Magazine some years ago. Excellent book, well done with very clear concepts and goals. The lessons are set up in a very logical order with lots of pointers on how to make the exercises work for you and your horse and what to do if you are not getting the right response. Each chapter ends with a riding challenge. This book is well worth the money, a great resource for student and teacher alike. You will return to it over and over again.
Good book.......2004-08-27
I found this book helpful. It is easy to understand and also has pictures for those who are more visual in their learning process. It covers a lot of the basics, which some need to go back to to help them in the more advanced movements of dressage. Dressage can be very initimidating with the language that is used, but this book explains terminology and concepts. This book also has "Lendons Challenges" which cover the more common errors riders tend to make when doing the different movements. The only fault I found was the majority of horses are wearing flash nosebands. To me this is a fashion of the times and curbs the horses potential.
Book Description
Once the domain of the equestrian elite, dressage (originating from the French word for “training”) is now the most popular equestrian discipline in the United States. Fueled in part by its visibility as an Olympic event, dressage participation levels have reached an all-time high.
This centuries-old practice of classical horsemanship, using time-tested and humane methods, is a slow process that requires patience and discipline, but is beneficial to every horse, regardless of breed. The goal of achieving seamless communication and dance-like precision with the horse appeals to riders of all levels, disciplines, and ages.
In this book, the United States Dressage Federation (USDF), whose membership has doubled in the past 20 years, demystifies basic dressage techniques for riders of all disciplines. Assuming no prior knowledge of the sport,
The USDF Guide to Dressage leads riders through a full course of exercises, from simple to more complex, with easy-to-follow photographic sequences, all presented in full-color and demonstrated by outstanding dressage instructors.
This authoritative guide also includes the dramatic and colorful history of dressage, an overview of proper terminology and equipment, as well as information on competition, crosstraining for other disciplines, management of the dressage horse, cross-training for achieving rider fitness, and more.
This intricate ballet of athleticism and grace, demanding precise movement and excellent communication between horse and rider, is particularly appealing to the growing group of “baby-boomer” riders who are looking for opportunities to expand their riding skills and knowledge without the physical challenges and risks involved in jumping and racing. Whether they’ve been in the saddle for years or are just taking up or renewing their riding practice, these eager riders will find
The USDF Guide to Dressage key to building a more satisfying relationship with their horse.

A must have for avid dressage riders!.......2007-07-05
In order to take you riding skills (dressage skills) to the next level, this book is what you need. Jennifer Bryant's book is the perfect compliment to your dressage training. Her relaxed tone makes it an easy and fun read as well as enormously informative.
Clear instructions enhanced with pictures and drawings makes the text very clear and easy to understand.
I am an advanced dressage rider and I highly recommend this book to anyone that are looking to perfect his or hers riding.
Excellent book on Dressage.......2007-03-24
I have found The USDF Guide to Dressage by Jennifer Bryant to be an easy-to-read, clear and concise book on Dressage. It is chock full of great information and nice photos.
Chapters include information on the history of Dressage, basic Dressage training, physical fitness for both horse and rider (with even some fitness exercises shown for the rider), and much more.
The book also discusses whether or not you are "Dressage material" and what you should know before and during your first Dressage show.
An informative Appendix is listed in the back of the book, too.
This book would be a great addition to anyone's Dressage/Horse library.
USDF Guide to _Competitive_ Dressage.......2007-03-21
I found this book to be a well-illustrated and easy-to-read guide. My one comment, or warning to those considering this book, is that as an official guide of the major national dressage organization, it is clearly geared toward those riders whose primary interest is in eventually competing. For the "recreational" dressage rider, much of the nitty-gritty of this book will be of little interest, and the real meat of training and riding techniques may seem too superficially covered. Overall though, great book for what it is and was written for!
A necessary handbook for the dressage rider........2007-03-09
This book should be on the shelf of EVERY dressage rider. Particularly useful to the newcomer, it is also a way the experienced rider can stay on the same page as all their collegues.
Good basic introduction to dressage and riding.......2007-02-07
This book might better be titled "Introduction to Dressage." It starts with the basics, assuming the reader is not only unfamiliar with dressage, but unfamiliar with basic horsemanship. As an introduction, it is excellent.
However, as a recent convert to dressage after years of riding hunt seat, I was hoping for something that covered more dressage-specific information. I was disappointed to find that this book tops out at Second Level. The buyer should be aware that although the book covers some lateral work like shoulder-in, it does NOT cover the higher levels of dressage, including half-pass, piaffe, passage, canter pirouettes, etc.

Book Description
A lively and intelligent guide to training winning jumping horses in the 21st century.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent ,focus on the welfare of the horse........2007-01-04
The author has a sympathic, kind, knowledgable plan of training with the emphasis on the individual horse's needs in mind. Conformation, prospect selection and getting the right start are discussed. Jumper flat work is defined and described vs.classical dressage. Many useful exercises are described to improve the horse's ability to become a more ridable jumper.
The jumping exercises are well planned and well written.
A very useful book, with nice photos and a helpful sections on problem correction.
I most enjoyed the obvious love and respect he feels for his horses.
Very readable and comprehensive book that deserves a place on your bookshelf!.......2007-01-03
While I'm not intent on producing Grand Prix showjumpers, I found this well-written book immensely helpful in giving me guidelines, ideas and inspiration for training my own young horse who I ultimately hope to event. It isn't a step-by-step recipe book on 'how to teach your horse to jump', but it's packed full of information, diagrams and photographs on every aspect of training a jumper from evaluating their potential, to jumping training, to keeping the horse healthy and sound. No stone is left unturned, and I was very impressed with the amount of bookspace devoted to correct flatwork training.
It's a very readable book, especially to an amateur rider like myself. This book also includes photos that, for instance, demonstrate the less than perfect jumping poses (or, 'how not to do it') in amongst the examples that paint the perfect picture. 'Bad' examples are not always included in books even though they are just as essential in making understood a point, and it's refreshing to see these included! I also really liked the chapters on evaluating a horse's potential and maintaining soundness - good education for me and with great diagrams and photos.
Definitely a book that deserves to be added to your equestrian bookshelf!
Great Information.......2006-04-22
I got this book for my girlfriend who is interested in showing jumpers. She has read it from cover to cover. It's packed with information and ideas and overall gives a good overview of the sport and provides the average horse person with enough information to get started.

An illustrated handbook on training the dressage horse on the lunge line and long reins in the classical Iberian and Viennese styles.
Customer Reviews:
Book Review.......2007-10-10
Excellent book, but not for a beginner. It doesn't go into very deep detail, so you do need some lounge line knowledge to really understand what the author is talking about.
Finally a Book with the AIDS given clearly.......2007-07-21
Finally! A book on in hand training and how to take the movements from the ground to mounted training. And a real explanation of each step for teaching the Spanish Walk (among many other movements) to a green horse. This is a book we'll return to again and again.
Wonderful Read! Great Photography!.......2007-03-09
Classical training -past present and future! This book would be interesting even if I wasn't trying to learn discrete training methods.
Very easy read; great philosophy.......2007-02-06
I loved this book! I normally use books like this as a sleep aid, but this one kept me awake and interested the whole way through. This guy has a very easy and straight forward way of explaining these complicated concepts as well as instructing the reader to watch for the horse's natural ability. Because the whip needs to be used on the legs of the horse for the more advanced moves, he constantly reminds the reader that these lessons need to be applied with patience and kindness, and to praise the horse for the slightest attempt.
If you have a horse built for extreme collection and want to try something different, this book is for you.
The Best Classical inhand principles so far!.......2005-10-12
This is a great book for people who want to learn classical in-hand principles using Iberian methods and the methods used by the SRS.
It's the best book I've seen so far on the topic of inhand schooling from novice through to advanced levels.
