Book Description

In Mutts, Patrick McDonnell strikes a delicate balance between lighthearted fun and responsible social commentary through the exploits of Earl the dog and Mooch the cat-now chronicled in their 16th book collection.

Earl and Mooch, along with supporting sidekicks Shtinky Puddin', Sourpuss, Guard Dog, and Crabby, humorously approach a range of subjects-from napping and daydreaming to summer vacations and Christmas anticipations-in addition to tackling important issues like responsible pet ownership, animal shelters, and saving our endangered species. Syndicated since 1994, Mutts appears in 700 newspapers in over 20 countries and receives at least one million visits each month to its official Web site, www.muttscomics.com.

McDonnell surpasses even himself in this whimsical, lovely collection of animal friendly cartoons. A must own! I bought others for relatives and friends. You should, too.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mutts book and the Sundays are in Color.......2007-07-06

This is McDonnell's second Mutts collection (the first being Everyday Mutts) where he has both color Sunday strips and daily black&white strips. This format is really fantastic, and I hope he continues to do his collections this way. Plus there's some added artwork that you won't find anywhere else. Mutts is my favorite comic strip and this collection does not disapoint; Mutt's is getting better all the time.

Book Description

The world–champion freestyle skateboarder and the man who brought the ollie – the trick that revolutionised the sport by taking it from the ground to the air – to street skating shares the history of skateboarding, as he tells the dramatic story of his life.

At the age of 13, Rodney took the freestyle skating world by storm. He won 35 world titles in less than five years. But through it all, his father looked down on his son's love for skating and pressured him to walk away from the sport and leave behind his fans and status as the most famous skateboarder of his era. After years of stress and conflict, Rodney gave in and promised his father he'd quit for good. But by the time he finally broke free from his suffocating and abusive home life, the popularity of freestyle had waned and given way to vert and street styles. So Rodney picked up his board and started from scratch. With the help of mentor Mike Ternansky, Rodney used his freestyle background to usher in a whole new era of street skating.

Today Rodney is more popular than ever. The videos in his series Rodney Versus Daewon are among the most popular skateboard videos ever produced. He won the 2002 Transworld Skateboarding readers' choice award for favourite street skater and is the most popular character on the top–selling Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video games.

5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2007-05-15

Possibly the best book I ever read. Although the history of skating through Rodney's eyes is fascinating, the true treasure of this book is seeing the world through Rodney's eyes. It is a beautifully told story with generous honesty. Being a skater is irrelevant to liking this book. If you've ever been young and had dreams, then you should be reading it.

5 out of 5 stars A real and inspiring story.......2007-04-24

I'm 27 years old and grew up watching all the legends like Rodney, Tony Hawk, Stacy Peralta, Tony Alva, etc. This is an amazing book not just because of it's relation to skateboarding, but because it tells a story of what it's like to sacrifice everything for what you love. If you are passionate about anything in your life and especially if you are young, facing opposition, reading this book may inspire you to follow your heart and what you believe.

I can relate to this book a lot because my father and Rodney's were of the same batch. I also felt that we had similar struggles as misfits in life. I highly recommend this book to anyone. It's an interesting read and a great story of someone who succeeded in life.

5 out of 5 stars The Mutt is cool.......2006-10-13

In the book "The Mutt" it shows the life of Rodney Mullens struggles of becoming a pro skateboarder. This book kept me very interested through the whole book. This book wasn not like other autobiographies, this one had a very interesting story to it and was very exciting to read. It was very fun for me to read because I like to skateboard as well. I was able to see how difficult it was for him to get to the point of his life where he is now.
I liked this book also because of the information he shared of his childhood as skater. He showed things that i never knew about of when he was a child and an adult. In some sense i was able to compare some of my life to his. We both had struggles in School and with girls and have had some family issues. Which was one of the things that kept me interested in his book.
So in conclusion I think that all skaters should read this book. Im sure any skater can relate to this book. After finishing the book i lend it to a freind who i later found out that he enjoyed it as much as I did. So if any body likes autobiograpghies on sports athletes then i suggest reading this book. And this is why I enjoyed "The Mutt"

5 out of 5 stars great read.......2006-08-19

I found this book to be very interesting, and a great read. It is well worth the price, and I definitely suggest that you buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Inspriational Story.......2005-07-31

The first time I saw Rodney Mullen was in 1986 at the University of Florida. I was between classes and, obviously Rodney was too. I was a skateboarder from 1976 to 1980 and had kept up with what was going on after that so, I knew who Rodney Mullen was. For about 30 minutes, I watched him do the most amazing tricks I had ever seen. He was skating by himself and I was the only one watching him.

Now that I am 40, my 11 year old son is getting into skateboarding. I wondered, "Whatever happened to Rodney Mullen?"

I found this book through a search for "Rodney Mullen" on Amazon. His story is very inspirational. I'm glad that he was able to find peace with his father and find happiness.

I can't imagine anyone doing for skateboarding what Rodney Mullen has done.

Animal lovers adore Patrick McDonnell's comic strip, Mutts featuring the adventures of Earl (the dog) and Mooch (the cat) told from their unique (and often hilarious) point of view. Just Like Heaven is a poignant and powerful picture book that fans (and their kids) will appreciate. We asked Patrick to tell us a little more about himself and the book, and he surprised us by including a few comic strips to help illustrate his story. A Special Message about Just Like Heaven
from New York Times Bestselling Author, Patrick McDonnell

I have spent the last twelve years as the creator of the newspaper comic strip Mutts. Mutts is centered on the unlikely friendship between Earl the dog and Mooch the cat. It combines my love for animals with my love for the art of the comic strip.

Becoming a daily cartoonist was something I always dreamed of doing, as was creating children's books. I love the timeless magic found in the best children's books. Like comic strips, its art is rooted in telling stories with words and pictures. Both forms have simplicity, poetry and optimism. Arts that spread joy.

I had the pleasure to do my first picture book last Fall when Little, Brown published The Gift of Nothing. It features Earl and Mooch. It was fun to tell a self-contained, complete story with characters I live with every day.

I followed The Gift of Nothing with Art, a book about a boy obsessed with making art and messes--a somewhat autobiographical love poem to the creative process.

My new book is titled Just Like Heaven. With this book I wanted to celebrate our everyday lives and the things we tend to take for granted, such as nature, birds, flowers, friends and family. It is loosely based on a two week story I once did in Mutts.

Some of the comic strips from that story are included here. While Mooch takes a nap under a tree, a deep fog quietly rolls in. Awakening in a cloud of mist, Mooch concludes that he must be in heaven. With his cat curiosity, he proceeds to explore his surroundings and sees the familiar in a whole new light:

I hope the book is uplifting, inspiring and will be something to cuddle up to with your two legged--and perhaps your four legged--little friends. --Patrick McDonnell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars MUTTS comics is the best ever ..........2007-04-05

I'm sure I sound like a broken record, but Patrick McDonnell is the next Charles Schulz. Mooch and Earl and the rest of the gang never fail to give an endearing, cheerful, often funny view of the tender issues that face our furry friends as well as the world at large. I have converted many, many folks into Mutts fans - and I give this particular book "Just Like Heaven" to every child I know. Birthdays, Easter, Christmas, and for no occasion at all other than I love them, and I love Mutts.

5 out of 5 stars Hug Time!.......2007-03-23

As a children's librarian, I am always on the lookout for new books that will get kids involved. This one is such a book!

As I read it to a rowdy bunch of 1st graders, you could almost feel the "quiet" enter the room as they looked and listened to what heaven may really be like. By the time we got to "hug time" they were so enthralled that with just a little bit of direction, we had a huge group hug and laugh together.

As I read it later to 4th graders, they were more interested in talking about their own ideas of heaven and perfect days, but they agreed that sometimes it is nice to just take a nap and wake up wanting to hug someone.

This would be a wonderful book to just have around to remind yourself that heaven is not made up of possessions, but of people (and animals).

5 out of 5 stars "Stop and smell the flowers.....".......2007-03-09

Short, sweet, and to the point. I read it to my two daughters and the story makes you stop, thank God for what you have and take in the moment.

4 out of 5 stars Must Love Dogs.......2007-01-10

I loved this book...I also have the "Gift Of Nothing" and the rest of the Mutts comic strip books. What can I say, I'm a HUGE Patrick McDonnell fan. This book was cute, simple, and easy to understand. It wasn't as good as The Gift of Nothing, but if you are a MUTTS fan, it will not disappoint. However, the lesson in this book may be a bit advanced for very young ones....I would suggest it for 7+. I however, bought it strictly for my enjoyment/collection and I'm well over 7.

5 out of 5 stars Soft as kitten toes and puppy kisses.......2006-10-12

Patrick McDonnell has done it again! Just Like Heaven reaches into your soul and tugs at your heartstrings with a message as soft as kitten toes and puppy kisses. Most people these days are in a fog by being too plugged in to marvel at the beauty and goodness that surrounds them. This sweet, simple masterpiece will help teach our children and feed our inner children. Giving the gift of Mutts has become a family tradition that I will continue for years to come.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finding beauty in being different.......2007-09-16

I don't think the first reviewer of this book actually paid any attention to anything other than the "cutsie names." In the foreward of the book, the cofounder of The Bark magazine points out that "mutts have played second fiddle to their more high-bred brethren for too long now" and hopes that "if every dog has its day, let's hope that it's the mutt's turn now." The pictures of Amanda Jones capture the charms and uniqueness of several mutts - perhaps most of whom were obtained from "a shelter near you." The "cutsie" names were given to do nothing more than be cute and attempt to identify the breeds existing in these dogs. How seriously can you take names such as "jackodauzer, "goldennese," and "bullbrador"? Think Tiger Woods calling himself a "Cablinasian" - it's all in good fun.

The pictures are gorgeous, the dogs are adorable, and the intent is to celebrate what many of us have at home: unique beautiful mutts with personalities all their own.

1 out of 5 stars This book will hurt dogs.......2007-06-20

I bought this from Amazon sight unseen because I collect dog photography books (I have over 30) but this is unfortunately the first one I have ever felt the need to return. I had no idea that the book glorifies the recent trend of breeding mutts, giving them cutsie names, and charging ridiculous amounts of money for what is really a mutt, but billed as a trendy "designer" dog.
Perhaps the author is trying to be tongue in cheek with these cutsie names, but this is a very real and very disturbing problem. "Puggles," for example, a mix of pug and beagle, are the latest trendy dog and a Google search will reveal hundreds of breeders. I believe it is grossly unethical to promote the breeding of designer mutts while thousands of dogs are being killed in shelters. Now this author is fueling the desire not only for "labradoodles," and "puggles," but combos that people may not have considered yet, such as "chackhussells" and "borgis." What an irresponsible book from somebody who claims to be a dog lover.

These are NOT cool and expensive dog breeds. They are mutts, and widely available at a shelter near you. This new business of intentionally breeding mutts with stupid names (and it is BIG business) has become out of control, and the author should be ashamed of herself for contributing to the trend.

The sooner people stop giving mongrels a "cutsie" name, the sooner the appeal for giving big bucks to irresponsible breeders will wear off.

Book Description

Everyday Mutts marks the 11th book of the award-winning Mutts strip. It is the follow-up to Patrick McDonnell's successful collection Who Let the Cat Out? as well as his first storybook, The Gift of Nothing, which reached the New York Times Best-Seller List for Children's Picture Books in January 2006.

McDonnell's classic cartooning style not only delivers consistent laughs but often a message that reminds us to take care of our furry friends. With its expressive art and clever, often philosophical pet banter, Mutts has built a large and loyal fan base among readers and cartoonists alike. McDonnell is a past winner of the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award, and Mutts won the coveted Comic Strip of the Year Award in 1996. Today it appears in almost 600 daily newspapers.

This unique collection includes 16 pages of full-color bonus material, including watercolors, other artwork, and items personally selected from the creator's sketchbook to accompany the black-and-white dailies and McDonnell's Sunday pages with his signature title panels. As always, the tales¿and tails¿of this especially close dog-kitty friendship can be counted on for charming adventures and gentle laughs, reminding us that there is more than it seems to the Everyday Mutts we meet on the street.

Book Description

With its expressive art and humorous, often philosophical musings, Mutts has become one of the most popular comic strips in the world, with an estimated daily readership of 50 million. Peanuts creator Charles Schulz called Mutts "one of the best comic strips of all time." Simpsons creator Matt Groening concurs: "Mutts cheers me up every day. It's not only sweet, simple, and funny-a rare combination-it's also the best drawn comic strip around." This comprehensive volume, the first to focus on the entire range of Patrick McDonnell's art, includes not only a vast collection of his Mutts strips, but also sketches, paintings, and wood carvings by the man who has made Earl the dog and Mooch the cat such beloved contemporary icons.

McDonnell's text-which serves as autobiography, comic history, character explication, and art history rolled into one-lets readers into his private universe to observe his process, influences, and passions. The result is an intimate and revealing look at the complexities of the cartooning craft and the forces that drive his own creative endeavors.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR MUTTS FANS.......2007-07-10

If you love the comic strip, Mutts, you will love this beautiful color edition of the comic strips with large, easy-to-read type. It'd look great on your coffee table. Mr. McDonnell relates what inspires his strips, his personal history, and thoughts about his characters. There are roughs showing his thought process, sketchbook drawings and examples of his pre-Mutts artwork. As I suspected, Krazy Kat, was a big influence on his artistry. This is the kind of book fans enjoy.

You might want to check out a book on a collection of Krazy Kat cartoons to compare the style.

5 out of 5 stars A work of art.......2007-01-04

Mutts and Patrick McDonnell should be household names by now. The comics are sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic, but always entertaining and thoughtfully done. The drawing is artistic and passionate with homage paid to other comics and various cultural styles. One of my favorite comics up there with Dilbert, Rose is Rose, Foxtrot, and For Better or For Worse.

5 out of 5 stars Simply great!.......2005-09-15

I really am a fan of Mutts. This book is worth the price. I just want everything of Mutts, so if you are a fan, you have to buy it! And no, I do not own some Amazon stock!

4 out of 5 stars Very, very good, but not much is new here.......2004-05-02

One of the best new comic strips to come down the pike in the last ten years is Patrick McDonnell's Mutts.

Cute doggie Earl and rascally Mooch have an understated charm that's reminiscent of the relationship between Snoopy and Charlie Brown before Snoopy took to the air in his imaginary Sopwith Camel.

Mutts is a down-to-Earth examination of how pets fit into the lives of their masters and vice-versa.

McDonnell's sensitivities derive from his simple yet eloquent style that draws upon the love and empathy that the strip's characters have for each other.

The book itself is a wonderful reprinting of many of his best daily and Sunday color strips. Also included are notes that cite the sources of the title panels of the Sunday strips that pay homage to old record albums, comic book covers, famous works of art, and movie posters.

The true fan of the Mutts strip will consider this book a 'must-have'. However, I have to admit that if you've been purchasing the Mutts collections printed so far, there's scant new material in this book. For a book of its size, the autobiographical information is very lean. There was probably more to read about McDonnell in a recent Star-Ledger newspaper interview than in this book.

I bought it for myself as a frivolous, self-indulgent treat. You might not want to do likewise.

5 out of 5 stars Yesh! A Book Better Than a Pink Sock!.......2004-01-08

Patrick McDonnell's work is among the very best gracing the newspaper comic strip pages today. There is a genuine quality to his work; an honesty that shines forth from the funnies. It is truly wonderful to see Abrams honor McDonnell and "Mutts" with this absolutely terrific monograph. The design of the book is scrumptious. Each page is carefully considered and I love the way that the designer combined sketchbook doodles and finished comic strips. It was also great to see references given for the Sunday page logo panels. They bring you just a little bit closer to the work.

And the work is really the main event here. The reproduction quality is glorious, giving us a sneak peak at what originals might look like. The color--oy, what color--is beautifully printed. If you can't see the original drawings, this book is the next best thing. The selection of work is great. They chose some of Mutts' very best, including the wonderful ice cream cone gag! That one remains one of my very favorites.

There are some really nice insights here, though they're not overblown. Like the strip itself, McDonnell writes in a true, succint way, then he lets his strip do the talking. You really get a sense of how invested he is in his creation.

If you're a Mutts fan, you can't pass this book up. And if you know of any Mutts fans who don't yet have this book, you can bank a bunch of karma by buying a copy for them. They'll love you more than a pink sock for it.

Book Description

Quick: What's the leading dog breed in the world? Well, of course, it isn't a “breed” at all. The top dog, in terms of the numbers, is the humble mutt. And mutts—in their infinitely quirky, oddball, all-mixed-up variety—have a very special place in all our hearts.

Even so, mutts' contributions to dogdom—and to the millions of human beings whose lives they share and enrich—have tended to remain uncelebrated. With Mutts, pet photographer Sharon Montrose aims to elevate these beloved but underappreciated companions' status through a series of 60 portraits that unleash the intelligence, cockiness, loyalty, energy, good looks, and sheer irresistibility of the mixed-breed dog.

It's a job to which Montrose brings a substantial professional pedigree (so to speak). In her four previous hit books for STC, she lovingly trained her camera's eye on purebred puppies, chihuahuas, dachshunds, and labs. Now, in this beautifully photographed and impeccably designed book, she accords mutts the same V.I.P. (Very Important Pooch) treatment. No matter what the mix—cocker spaniel/poodle, terrier/chihuahua, poodle/labrador, or heeler/corgi—Montrose's gentle pack of adorable mongrels is guaranteed to charm. Like each of its subjects, Mutts makes a one-of-a-kind addition to any dog lover's life.

Book Description

Mutts is known for its straight-forward, delightful artwork, its positive messages, and, of course, the antics of its charming furry protagonists, Earl the dog and Mooch the cat. But Mutts has also garnered praise for its creative and colorful Sunday strips.Sunday Mornings is a collection of Mutts Sunday strips hand-picked by creator Patrick McDonnell. Monday through Saturday, readers of every generation have wide-ranging reasons why they love Mutts. But Sunday is a special visual adventure. The logo panel is almost a strip unto itself, often paying homage to cartooning of yesteryear, with Mooch and Earl in a comic book cover tribute or parodying a strip from decades gone by. Some readers may have never seen the logo panel, since they are sometimes dropped for space. Those cheated readers, as well as those who have come to love Mutts' special Sunday full-color strips, will cherish this vibrant collection.

5 out of 5 stars Cute, funny, sweet -- perfect.......2007-04-11

Mutts often has me smiling with delighted recognition, chuckling at a charming moment or simply laughing -- and laughing and laughing -- out loud. Humor doesn't have to be cynical, mean or caustic to be utterly hilarious.

Pure, perfect entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Best Newspaper strip around.......2001-12-07

Mutts is hands down the best daily newspaper strip being published today. There's a perfect balance between cute and smart here and the Sunday strips stand out with clever homages to everything from Norman Rockwell to Captain Beefheart. Sweet and accesible but not stupid, a rare combination these days.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, then poignant.......2001-11-30

Maybe you've seen "Mutts" in your local paper, and already know of "schnubbing," acorn-bombing squirrels and the Lil' Pink Sock. This edition is Earl and Mooch in full color, and the presentation isn't simply the straightforward reprinting of their Sunday strips--McDonnell has put together a beautiful collection of related art and tight focus panels from the strips themselves. The resulting homages add depth to the strips themselves, which hit high notes of hilarity along with sad reminders that Earl and Mooch are some of the lucky animals in our world. (Let Guard Dog off his chain, you monsters!) This is the best comic strip since Calvin and Hobbes, so get on the bandwagon now.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books about dogs.......2003-08-20

I've read this book cover to cover more than once, and laughed out loud each time. The authors' love of dogs shines through every page, and the humor is razor sharp and based on experience. For anyone researching dogs as a first step toward bringing home a canine companion -- purebred or mixed -- this book is a great resource (and great entertainment too).

2 out of 5 stars Some good points but didn't care for it.......2003-08-05

I like the point made that non-pure bred dogs are wonderful and worth saving. However some of the "catalogue" of mixes was ridiculous. Example: comments on "chow-sharpei" mix and "chow" mixes was obviously due to the fact that the author does not like either breed. I have a chow/samoyed mix who is absolutely wonderful - got the best of both breeds. It would have been more fair to catalogue as well the good points of the breed and perhaps explain more as to why certain breeds can have negative points (poor breeding, socialization & training for example).

3 out of 5 stars Mutt pride, but in a nasty way.......2003-04-03

This was an enjoyable book, but not completely a positive experience. I currently have three dogs (two mutts, one purebred), and have fostered many - all different kinds, both mixed and pure. I've loved all of them dearly, but books like "Mutts" imply that one can only love one or the other - purebred or mutt. They're all dogs, all individuals. I don't own a breed, I own my Beau, a collie - a breed that gets a lot of negative attention in this book.

Some of the passages about purebred dogs were downright offensive. A Golden/collie mix is described as "Valley girl meets Forrest Gump" in a section discussing temperaments of mixed breed dogs. There was much space wasted dissing purebreds in like fashion. I guess it's supposed to be humorous, but I found it nasty-tempered and alienating.

Yes, there are German Shepherds that are skittish and shelties that are hyperactive yappers, but this book makes it sound like every purebred dog is a degenerate freak and only mutts are "real" dogs. While I understand the need for a book that promotes mutts as the great pets they are, I wish it didn't have to be at the expense of purebred dogs and those who choose to own them.

5 out of 5 stars My dogs.........2002-05-03

I always have to describe my dogs in terms of purebreds. This has never sat well with me. My dog is a mutt. She is medium sized, fluffy and white. This satisfies none of her admirers - she has to be part border collie or australian shepherd in order to slake their curiousity. What is is it with people, why does breeding matter? Yep, she probably has some border collie in her, but she cannot/will not herd (she is stubborn) and hates chasing balls and frisbees - she ain't no stinking border collie.

Oh well, it is nice to have this book for some mutt pride. Yeah, there is not a purebred in my house - but I have this in common with most american families! My dog is known as 'white dog' in this book - and that's enough for me!

5 out of 5 stars Mutts have Gutts.......2001-04-19

This is a well written book about the intelligence possessed by mixed-breed dogs. They are courageous animals that are protective of their owners and eager to please. After reading the inspiring stories in this wonderful book, I will only own mutts in the future. Delightful Book!

4 out of 5 stars The Mutt Styling Guide.......2007-03-30

Pretty Good Book. Very informative, black and white print. Can get a little technical at times. You need to know dog grooming jargon. Overall though, a great book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have! Don't Pass Up! .......2006-02-19

I purchased this book under the impression that it was going to be a standard grooming guide. I am so happy that it wasn't. It is different than any other grooming book out there.

Due to my busy schedule as a professional groomer, I do not have the time to dredge through bathing and brushing instructions over and over again, so I was delighted to see that these instructions had been omitted. I learned all the basics over eight years ago!

I feel that this book is more about helping a groomer and dog owner see different possibilities of how to turn a homely mutt into a mixed breed champ.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars!!!.......2006-02-14

I rate this "one of a kind" grooming book a 5 star. As a professional dog groomer for over ten years I was a little reluctant to buy this book. I am so glad that I did. It is very different from most grooming books mainly because it is not boring. It's creative and unique. The variety of mixed breeds and the number of different makeovers created for the same dog not only enables me to visualize but my clients to visualize new possibilities for their companions.

5 out of 5 stars A great purchase!!!.......2006-02-14

As a dog groomer before I spend my hard earned money I always do my research. The wonderful articles about The Mutt Styling Guide in January 2006 edition of Dog World, Akron Beacon Journal, The West Side Leader, and it's most recent nomination for Dog Writers of America made me feel that spending my money on this book would be a safe bet. It was!
I am very happy with my purchase and give The Mutt Styling Guide five stars.

3 out of 5 stars Better for beginners.......2005-08-15

I would say this is a great book for someone with no experience or is just out of grooming school. However, for someone like me who has been grooming for 7 years it was not helpful. I feel that most experienced groomers already use the techniques approached in this book. I was really looking forward to more photos instead of the drawings. I do applaud the effort that Ms. Thompson put into writing it. If you are a beginner, buy this book but If you are confidant in your grooming skills, save your money.
