I bought this book about a month and a half ago. I enrolled in FIt and are doing the behavior analysis course. This book is VERY helpfull for extra examples and the writing is easy to understand. Great book to read if you are interested in human behavior and the processes involved in human behavior. Espacially if you are using it for school purposes.

It was well worth getting the 2nd edition of this book. The feature of matching the content to the tests will be a great study aid for the exam. Also, the current research and added information was very beneficial. If you have the first edition of the text it is well worth the money to get the more current edition.

4 out of 5 stars Good resources book.......2007-08-07

Good for beginner and amature photographer. Clean and easy to understand guide book for Nikon's creative lighting system. (Flashes) This is a book for those who wants to know how to use their Nikon flash fast, without going through your boring manual. (I think it is better to read the manual first) Many good tips. Worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Best Nikon CLS book on the market.......2007-07-05

After just finishing this book I wanted to let other photographers know how great it is. The book begins with explaining the actual flash and what all of those dials and switches do. That section also covers the settings for each mode. Then once you have an understanding of how the hardware works you move into the basics of photography which consists of studio lighting and strobes. This section was particularly valuable to me because the Nikon system meshes with this kind of setup so well.

Only halfway through the book at this point and already learning a ton of very good information. The next chapter is wireless lighting which might be a little beyond the normal photographer, but something you should look in to. A basic basement or guest room can be made in to a great photo studio. You will of course quickly learn this flash isn't only for indoor because it can also be used for some pretty interesting outdoor shots. One of which is extreme sports and events.

Overall I was very pleased with this book and highly recommend you go pick up a copy of your own.

4 out of 5 stars Full of Information.......2007-05-18

I felt the book gave plenty of information on CLS. Sure you have to know a bit to grasp what you are being told here, but one can assume that anyone owning a couple of SB800 already has some knowledge of lighting.
For me it filled in serious gaps in the information Nikon gave in it's manual and we are now able to coordinate four 800 units. The Lumedynes are now in the box for backup and nothing more.
As I often say the great thing in my 40 year in the art and business of photography is that as I have gotten older, the equipment has gotten lighter and faster not to mention controlable.

4 out of 5 stars Nikon D200 Creative Lighting Field Guide.......2007-05-06

This a good but not top notch introduction to Nikon flash photograhy and Nikon products.

I found it a bit thin, and probably not very useful once one had become familiar with the Nikon products.

I am not convinced that once i have gone through it I would keep returning in the future.

1 out of 5 stars Padded and superficial.......2007-03-29

I wish I had noticed the earlier reviews of this book before wasting my money and time reading it. The author lays out the CLS flashgun basics more clearly than do the Nikon manuals, but then passes on into generalities, dwells at length on portraiture in a very superficial way (with pretty poor examples to boot), and further pads with unneccessary side issues. There are also factual errors.

Book Description

The surprise fourth installment, the epic conclusion of Lian Hearn's beloved, bestselling Tales of the Otori.

The Harsh Cry of the Heron: The Last Tale of the Otori is a truly epic novel. It is the rich and satisfying conclusion to the Tales of the Otori series that both completes the characters' lives-prophesied and otherwise-and brilliantly illuminates unexpected aspects of the entire Otori saga. The Harsh Cry of the Heron is the only fitting end to such a stirring series: a book that takes the storytelling achievement of Lian Hearn's fantastic medieval Japanese world to startling new heights of drama and action.

Hearn's Otori series is the best (and only) literary expression of a cultural phenomenon that has swept through cinema (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), comics (manga), and popular culture at large. And, with this book, Hearn delivers in full ninja vs. samurai fashion the kinetic, simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting resolution that the Otori's hundreds of thousands of fans richly deserve-whose epic satisfaction will surely draw even more readers into the fold.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best for Last.......2007-09-28

Ms. Hearn teased and tantalized us but this was definitely the best book of the bunch. I'm including Heaven's Net Is Wide in the equation too. I can't say I wanted it to go down like it did but then again I'm reading her story not mine and I wasn't disappointed in the least. I had no complaints. Highly recommend this book as well as the entire series.

5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Sequel.......2007-07-14

I much enjoyed the first three Tales of the Otori books, and number four did not disappoint. The author presents the historical picture very effectively, while weaving a tale of epic proportions. Few authors so well command the skill of showing the right balance of fairness and unfairness, justice and injustice happening to the central characters. If you read the first three books, you must get this one, and if you did not, but have an interest in feudal Japan, get all four.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-07-07

I am a huge fan of the first three books. I read this one with very high expectations for that reason. I would hate to use the word "disappointing" but it really wasn't what I expected. It was a good read, don't get me wrong, but it will never live up to the original trilogy. I would recommend buying it... The begining was alright, the middle was jumpy and drawn out, and the end was quite twisted and unexpected, but captivating all the same. Over all worth it though. Enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars An Author Who Obviously Hates Happy Endings And True Love.......2007-06-27

I am always a bit wary when writing a review because I don't want too unintentionally give away to much plot and spoil it for people. I will try not to give away anymore of the novel than any of the other reviewers have...That being said I must say what a complete disappointment this book was! I enjoyed the first three books, though felt they were a bit doom and gloom and depressing at times as well. I listened to the entire series on audiobook and tried to listen to the fourth without going back but got 40 minutes into the book and had no idea what was going on! Even after listening to the third book again I was often confused by all the many different characters and the plot twists that depended on you remembering previous novels. The names of many of the characters are so similar that, even though I feel the narrators were wonderful, I was often confused as to who was who. All this I could put aside and give 3 stars to this book if it wasn't for the ending...Horrible! As many others feel it had a hurried feel to it as if the author was thinking "Uh oh getting way too long I better end it soon". And without giving away too much plot the character change of Kaede from the first 3 books to this one really stretches plausibility and her COMPLETE character change at the end was beyond the slightest credibility. The message the first three books seem to impart is "love can conquer all" and the message the last book imparts is "love WILL conquer all so if your stupid enough to try it watch your back"...Not the kind of book or message I want to waste 20 or so hours of my life on...Bottom line = Avoid this book at all costs!

1 out of 5 stars It never ends........2007-05-30

I liked the first three books well enough. The first was the best (if implausible), the second quite enjoyable (even though it strained credibility) and the third was alright (absolutely unbelievable). My reading speed kept diminishing as the series progressed, but my true challenge was trying to finish this one, the fourth. This book is practically unreadable.
Just as all the other reviewers have said, it's too convoluted and has too many characters by half (wracking your brain to remember who was who=not fun). NOTHING HAPPENS during the first 3/4 of the book. They travel here and there and talk unlikely politics. So finally the writer wraps up the whole mess in a narrative of the main character's fate.
If you enjoyed the original 3 books, skip this and enjoy your memories.

5 out of 5 stars Eye opening book........2007-09-30

This book had a few earlier reviews that left me feeling skeptical before buying and reading it myself. Now that I have read it I feel it is a great tool for showing what very could have happened in our Earths history.
The author did a very good job of explaining the content and left me with no questions about it. I personally believe what he researched and authored is very likely the truth. It gave me the "proof" of knowing that our world was indeed created by an awesome God. The fallen angels who corrupted Gods perfect creation by breeding the half man-half angel "Nephilim" really makes it all come together.
The last part of the book emphasizes a relationship with our creator God (Yeshua) aka. Jesus. That is the best part. Only when we recognise that we ourselves are corrupt in the heart and rebel against God, do we finally understand the need for a savior (Jesus). The good part is that what he did on the cross paid for all our rebellious sin. All we have to do is accept it for ourselves freely.

I recomend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars Great about understanding an ancient race....in religion.......2007-09-21

This book is excellent in understanding the pyramids and an ancient race that was coursed. and how it all times in to end time prophecy...

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT FOUNDATION BOOK..........2007-09-12

Dr. Patrick Heron's book is one the first book I've read that deals with the fallen ones extensively... I was really amazed how good he is at pointing the facts. Indeed it is convincing. The second part of the book tells about the Apocalypse and End Times. I particularly like this Biblical quote that Dr. Patrick emphasized...

"FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE
GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, JESUS
CHRIST, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM
SHALL NOT PERISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL
LIFE......." John 3:16

Believe and you shall have Eternal
Happiness...

FAITH....

Two words to sum it all up: YOU'LL BELIEVE!!

4 out of 5 stars Raised More Questions.......2007-08-24

I thought the book was very good. I've been interested in the details (what details there are that are credible) pertaining to Genesis 6 for a while now and Patrick Heron has provided some. I wished that Mr. Heron would have discussed more about the possibility of the existence of the Nephilim today (i.e., in this day and age). I question if there is another program by the fallen to dilute the human race again seeing as The Anointed (the one true hero in the greek sense) has all ready arrived in the flesh. The discussion about the pyramids was interesting and Mr. Heron suggests that the Holy City described in Rev. 21 is in the shape of a pyramid. Possible, ...but I prefer the interpretation of it being cubic in shape as this would make it a six (6) sided structure rather than the five (5) sided design of a pyramid. The number five (5) of course being associated with the adversary (Satan).

5 out of 5 stars Crucial .......2007-02-16

I can't encourage you enough to know the information in this book. There are even forms in the back for you to use when billing people. The last time I brought my invoice to someone they responded about how professional it was. Read this before you start making mistakes that will become very costly to you and your business!

5 out of 5 stars great resource.......2006-11-10

This book was invaluable in the pricing process. It includes guides that most other books of this kind do not. For example, guides for how to calculate your annual overhead in order to take it into account with the pricing of every job. Great book, and I'm sure it will come in handy when it comes to pricing stock images.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2006-05-21

The only book you may ever need in general stock & assignment photography pricing. This is my conclusion after buying several books. Other books discuss the business but left the pricing. So this topic become "mysterious" for most photographers starting their business. Well thought and the authors are not afraid explaining their ideas in details. Very useful and serves as reference whenever you need it.

For specific subject combine with other book. E.g for nature photography business, combine this book with John Shaw's Nature Photography Business.

5 out of 5 stars an invaluable guide for photographers.......2003-12-07

An invaluable guide for photographers providing information on pricing, negotiation and business behavior with clients, A very good book

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for pro and would-be pro photographers.......2003-04-30

I'm called a veteran photographer these days, but I learned a lot from the newest edition of this book. It's easy to forget expenses when estimating or billing, and the book shows you how to avoid such pitfalls. There are many new stock uses relating to the web etc. and I now have a basis for pricing such uses. If you are starting out, read the book carefully, it's as good an introduction to the business end of photography -- that is of course about making money -- as you will get. If you know a photo student, give it to him or her as a graduation present. Highly reccommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-06-25

My grandma originally owned a copy of this book and regularly noted sightings of interesting/rare species. I bought my own copy several years ago and it has proved quite useful. The most interesting example was a Java Sparrow sighted in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I couldn't find out what it was from searching around online, but looking in the back of this field guide, under foreign/introduced species, there it was.

5 out of 5 stars Quality Through and Through.......2005-10-11

I received this book as a gift and have used it constantly. I keep it on my window sill during the feeding season to identify the visiters to my feeder. The book's size and physical construction are excellent. As someone who is a novice it seems to be very comprehensive on the subject matter.

5 out of 5 stars The birder's bible.......2005-07-19

Even when I lived in the city, I liked to feed and watch the birds (mainly sparrows and pigeons). Now that we live up in the woods, we're in bird paradise. Using this Peterson Field Guide for "Eastern Birds" plus a good pair of binoculars for visual identifications, and the "Birding by Ear Eastern/Central" CDs (Richard K. Walton and Robert W. Lawson) I've identified 42 species of birds in just over a month, as a casual observer for the Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas II project.

I have other bird books, but it is Peterson's Field Guide that I use most frequently. Roger Tory Peterson's 'system' "is based on patternistic drawings with arrows that pinpoint the key field marks." You don't have to have the bird in hand in order to make an identification. In addition to 136 full-color plates of Eastern birds (male, female, and immature, or summer and winter plumage if they differ markedly), there are also 390 three-color maps (first introduced in the 1980 edition).

The maps are absolutely essential for an amateur like me. If I've narrowed down a blurry little gray bird to X and Y, and Y never makes it north of the Mason-Dixon Line, I can be pretty certain that the bird is X. Here's an actual example on the utility of the maps: I was trying to distinguish a trilling song that could either belong to the Swamp Sparrow, the Pine Warbler, or the Northern Junco. We do see Juncos at our feeders in the winter, but this is July and according to Peterson's map, the Juncos spend the summer north of here, mostly in Canada. So I've narrowed the trill down to the Swamp Sparrow or the Pine Warbler (actually I'm positive we've got both as I've made tentative visual identifications. It makes sense since we live in the Pine Barrens which is dotted with numerous swamps).

This book begins with a generalized introduction to identifying birds by shape, distinctive features and behavior. Physically, it is tightly bound and just the right size to slip into a backpack. The pages are glossy and 'relatively' waterproof if you wipe them quickly dry. There is even a 'life list' up front where you can check off the birds you have seen.

Don't go birding without it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner book for myself and my sister........1999-04-26

The Peterson field Guide to Eastern American Birds turned out to be the best birding book I've ever read. The book was well thought out and had the format that we needed in our suburban environment. The illustrations were concise and made identifying the birds extremely easy. We have a large population of Red-Winged Blackbirds and Mourning Doves, and its great to actually know what in the world we were looking at. It was great!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to identification of birds........1998-05-13

This is the best of the field guides for the amature birder in my opinion. I purchased a guide that had actual photos of birds in their habitats, thinking it would be the best, but it definately was not as good or as easy to use as the Peterson field guide. If you are looking for a good all around field guide to keep near your binoculars, this one is my pick.

    Book Description

Herons, the graceful predators of swamps, wetlands and lake margins, are often the abiding memory for bird lovers after a days birding in the marshes. For the general nature lover, they are a portrait symbol of the wild free places and the grandeur of the natural world. North American herons live in a complex world. Most of them congregate in colonies either large or small, and they are joined by many birds that share their nesting sites. Most of these different species live together in harmony, but inevitably such gatherings attract predators and scavengers. James Hancock, a veteran traveler and lover of herons the world over, gives a pocket guide in words and photographs to the lives of these birds and their, sadly, often endangered habitats. The book seeks to describe the many and varied creatures that make up the world of the herons.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book for beginning birders.......2005-09-21

This is a pleasant enough introduction to wading birds, focusing primarily on herons and egrets, with lots of decent photos. There is little real technical information about the different species. If you're looking for a book with some nice pictures of herons, this is it. If you're looking for information on range, habits, behavior, there's not much here

5 out of 5 stars The perfect balance.......2005-07-07

What impressed me the most about this book is how the author struck a balance between beautiful pictures and good scientific information. With these types of publications you sometimes get one or the other. I personally wanted more then just good photographs. I am learning a lot from reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great basic book to get you started .......2007-09-27

I found this book to be helpful in some areas and lacking in other but I did learn quiet a few helful tips on photographing children. The most important thing and it is covered throughout the book is lighting. It talks about where to take pictures and at what time of day is best. This book focuses mainly on outdoor or inside pictures with natural light and touches here and there on artificial,it would have been nice to have a little more on artificial lighting though. There are so many examples of pictures the author has taken so you will know exactly what she is talking about and gives you lots of ideas for portraits and what type of angle/frame is best for different age groups, everything is explained very clearly. I really enjoyed reading this book and I feel that it has truly helped to improve my photography skills.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but basic.......2007-05-31

I bought this book expecting more than what it was. Perhaps it was my fault for not spending more time researching before I bought a book, but whatever the case, I still think this book was slightly lacking. It was a very quick read with many common sense ideas which could be found easily by reading articles on the internet.

If you're just starting out with any type of photography, this may be helpful to you. If you've been taking informal pictures for awhile, you will likely already know most of this information.

      4 out of 5 stars I've learned alot..........2007-05-14

This book has been very informative and the images help explain what the author is saying. I'm very much a visual learner and this book has been enjoyable to read and I think it's improved my photography skills. Wish I'd had it with my first baby instead of 5th but I guess it's never too late to learn new things.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it BEFORE you have a child!.......2007-04-10

This is truly a great book that gives you a ton of good advice without overwhelming you with all the terminology! Be sure you buy this book before you expect to photograph children, if possible (when you're still expecting a baby, for example). I bought this book when my baby turned 10 months, so two things happened:
      1. By now, I've been trying to figure out how to take better pictures for so long that I stumbled upon some solutions on my own, and found some advice in shorter guides available online. I could have learned as much and more from this book in just 3 days had I purchased it earlier. Now, some of the stuff in the book seems repetitive to me, but I'm hoping to have my husband read it and start taking better pictures as well, so that it's not always Daddy and the baby in all the pictures.
      2. While I was learning all the tricks on my own, I missed dozens of golden opportunities. It might sound funny coming from someone who shot thousands of pictures already, but I get very upset looking at my baby's first weeks and seeing all the mistakes I made and chances I missed.
So, once again - great book, get it early!

      5 out of 5 stars Well done!.......2006-03-25

A great little book that takes all the mystery out of taking photos of your baby or child. Step-by-step instructions, how to avoid common pitfalls, and LOTS of top-notch illustrations to show before-and-after comparisons and how-to's. If you are a parent or a photographer bent on taking world-class photos of the little ones, this book is a must-have. Michel Heron couldn't make it any clearer or more simple. I wish I had this book 20 years ago when my son was a little guy!
