AN A (AS IN "ARIA") FOR THIS SET OF WORDS AND MUSIC.......2006-01-03
The marriage between words and music has never been better produced. And more popularly priced. Each volume includes two compact discs with the complete opera, as well as a hardcover book containing the libretto in it original language and an English translation with annotated commentary and expert commentary. Stunning color photographs illustrate the history of the opera and the production's performers, including Grace Bumbry, Birgit Nilsson, Renata Scotto and Franco Corelli. The slipcased set includes Aida, Carmen, Madama Butterfly, La Boheme, La Traviata and The Marriage of Figaro; each volume is also priced individually. Break out the bubbles ... that's "bubbles" as in Beverly Sills, the star of La Traviata.

Lovable white pooch McDuff has a real knack for finding his way home--and into readers' hearts. A handy little box with a snap closure and a red handle holds three of Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers's quaint, 1930s-style tales about this West Highland terrier, as well as a sheet of nine McDuff stickers. In McDuff Moves In, the resourceful pup bounces out of a dogcatcher's truck and finds his way to a new home with a couple named Lucy and George. He manages to get lost while chasing a rabbit in McDuff Comes Home, but a nice old woman straps him into her motorcycle's sidecar and helps him find home again. "Only child" McDuff is in for a bit of a rude awakening in McDuff and the Baby: "Every day in every way McDuff was happy. But one day a stranger arrived. It was a baby." McDuff needn't have worried. No one can resist his charms, even in competition with a newborn.
These three small read-aloud books, sized just right for a child's hands, are a wonderful introduction to the dreamy, old-fashioned series by two well-loved creators of children's books. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description

Great Writer and Illustrator Duo.......2006-07-26
The McDuff series lovingly recreates a small New England town of the late 1940''s or early `50's. The frontispiece shows a neighborhood of gables two and three-story house, some with curved roofs, masonry, and picket fences, all with tall chimneys nearly touching the treetops. It's immediately welcoming. When we meet a cute (!), big-eyed, white terrier, our hearts are completely won over. McDuff is a dog's dog: He's got a nose for food, a watchful eye, and he's full of terrier energy.
This review will focuse on "McDuff Comes Home," one of three stories included here. In "McDuff Comes Home," our canine hero discovers that the kitchen window is closed. Alas! He can't bask on his Adirondack chair and savor the usual "snappy scent of Fred's frying sausages, the velvety smell of Lucy's vanilla rice pudding." (In a book set in the post-war era, I wonder if this is a thinly veiled reference to Fred Mertz and Lucille Rcardo...). Undistracted by food, McDuff notices and then chases a large brown rabbit, loses his collar, and finally collapses in a cozy vegetable patch--just the spot for a snooze.
The garden owner heads for the police station with the lost dog in her motorcycle sidecar--another wonderful touch--but McDuff's "woofs" guide them back to his home instead. Here, Fred and Lucy serve a lavish 1950's lunch: Period dishes piled high with apple pie, perhaps a dozen thick sandwiches, an entire ham, and various cheeses and dessert. McDuff, looking very content, sits in his Adirondack, about to eat a favorite treat, "a small dish of vanilla rice pudding with a sausage slice on top."
Veteran writer Rosemary Wells (the "Max and Ruby" series) keeps things moving, and the story is neither too dense nor too blandly simple. Some writers seem to slap on contrived "funny" endings but Welles blends an unforced comic twist with an integrated, reassuring conclusion. Caldecott Honor winner Susan Jeffries' great sense of period style adds to the series' appeal. The colors are smooth and saturated; the contours rounded and inviting--the book exudes welcoming, friendly warmth. Jeffries takes chances with her youngest audience in one 2-page spread that shows a curving trail of repeated Cuffs and the rabbit meant to show the zigzagging trail of their chase. This may confuse some small fry, but it's a delightfully energetic scene, enjoyable on its own (and somewhat older kids will have little difficulty understanding an adult's explanation). "McDuff Comes Home" is just one great story in this collection of three, and it masterfully blends active and soothing scenes to delight child and adult, both day and night. The McDuff series is another winner from Rosemary Wells (with copious help from illustrator Susan Jeffers), the author who gave us the bunny antics of Max and Ruby.
Our Daughter's New Favorites.......2004-01-21
A friend bought our two year-old "McDuff's New Friend" for Christmas, and we all liked it so much that we went out and bought this set of the earlier stories, too. These are beautifully illustrated little books, and the small format versions are perfect for our toddler's hands. McDuff is charming, and his adventures are told with an economy and subtle humor that parents can appreciate as much as the little ones. We read all three of these every day, and none of us have gotten tired of them yet.
These are great books for gifts to children or the people who read to them. They might be especially appreciated by grandparents and greatgrandparents, who will enjoy the books' mild humor and 1930s setting.
AS CUTE AND AS SWEET AS IT GETS!.......2002-02-10
If you love darling little fluff-muffin dogs, it doesn't get any better than this! The cute purse-like container has McDuff's sweet face on it. Inside are three of the best McDuff books, plus stickers. Any kid would LOVE this. I bought one for myself, it was so darn cute and reminded me so much of my own precious terrier. This is the present I'm going to give every small child from now on. The illustrations of McDuff are absolutely on the mark: This illustrator REALLY knows what terriers are like--their poignant, wistful looks; the way they hold their bodies; and a million other endearing characteristics. Also, children are sure to be stimulated by these wonderfully simple but thought-provoking and unsentimental little stories about, for example, how McDuff gets jealous over a new baby, and how McDuff gets lost but finds his way home. All of the McDuff books are absolutely top-notch. They will warm your heart!
McDuff warms hearts!.......2001-10-21
In the first three books of this charming series, McDuff finds his new "forever" home with a happy young couple, explores the neighborhood and deals with the homecoming of a new baby into the family. Warm, innocent and beautifully illustrated, the McDuff books capture the impish and loyal character of Westies-- and a simpler era that is a welcome antidote to our recent times. Buy them, by all means-- for adults or children of any age!
Customer Reviews:
Not as described.......2007-09-22
The title is misleading. The description of this book was sadly lacking in information. There really wasn't any direction on how to train a small breed, adult dog. I sent it back. It may have done a splendid job helpiing train pups, but there was hardly any mention of how to go about retraining an adult. I needed to look at the book before buying it, but was unable to find it in a local bookstore. The current discription needs to be updated to reflect what information is covered.
Pretty Good Ideas.......2007-04-20
I thought the price was a little high, but the book is not bad. My Bichon is partially litter trained. I'm still working on it. I did notice a few spelling and grammatical errors. I can overlook that because the method is pretty good.
What a Great Book and It Works!!.......2007-02-07
I'm not too sure what the previous comments are talking about, but I purchased this book to train my 3yr old Yorkie and thought it was great! My yorky has been trained to go outside and do to the recent cold weather I decided to try litter box training. There is some information on the web, but this is the only book I could find that went into greater detail. I found it went into much more detail, especially on problem solving. It also explained the process much better than any websites had. My yorkie was used to going outside so it took about a month to re-train her to use the litter box, but it was well worth it. I really recomend this book to anyone curious or interested in Litter Box training their small dog!
Don't waste your money.......2007-01-17
This book is too vague; not enough detail. I knew most of what she wrote about just by using common sense;I was hoping for more information. Don't waste your money. Her method does not work as quickly as she states in the book either.
Not impressed........2006-10-16
I researched this subject online and bought the book, hoping it would provide more information. It does not. Instructions are along the lines of, "you may want to buy a bigger litter box.. but you may not...", with not much explanation. The grammar is poor, there were typos, and the book is obviously cheaply made.
There is no more information in the book than you could easily find searching online for 5 minutes. This book is not worth purchasing.

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected, but well done........2007-10-03
I ran across the author some time back, and just recently again. I'm a hack writer from Northern KY/Cincinnati area, and wanted to support a local boy as well as read a story based in the area I'm from. I've not found many stories based in Cincinnati...
Anyway..
The book is good. I like the protagonist, Joe Box, and found him enjoyable to read about. The plot is creative and the book is well written.
My only issue was that I did not realize how much of a role Joe's faith played into the story, and my interest waned when religion became such an integral part of the plot.
Overall, a good story, but expect a Christian theme.
Keep up the good work Mr Robinson.
Really good book, but a bit too graphic in violence.......2007-06-04
"Until the Last Dog Dies" is an interesting and well written book. It is in first person style and follows a private detective (former policeman) who is a Vietnam veteran. His unit in Nam was assigned to hunt down an enemy sniper. Now some thirty years later those events are resurfacing as the men in his unit seem to be dying under mysterious circumstances.
The novel has a fast pace and good character development. Without giving away plot secrets suffice it to say that there are twists and turns. I enjoyed the novel very much.
There are a few spots that push the envelop on violence and are a bit graphic, but they are few. I would have given the novel five stars if the violence was not as vividly described.
Realistic, thrilling fiction!.......2006-12-03
I don't usually read Christian fiction. Not because I'm an atheist or agnostic or any other "a" word that would make my Southern Baptist parents turn over in their graves, but because I like my fiction quite a bit more true-to-life than is usually allowed for by the unrealistic restrictions most Christian publishers place upon their authors. So I was thrilled to find that Joe Box--John Robinson's rough-edged detective in UNTIL THE LAST DOG DIES--is as real as... well, as Joe himself might say, as real as a slap upside the head from your mama when you're not paying attention.
Joe is a multi-dimensional character who takes you with him just as deftly when he revisits 30-year-old memories of Vietnam as when you follow him breathlessly through the investigation into who is killing all his former platoon buddies. And for all Joe's lingering hard-nosed habits, ever-present and steadily growing is an inner peace and unmistakable contentment that come from Joe's still-new relationship with God that allows him to face the madman who wants to destroy all that Joe loves.
Imperfect Christians are much better examples for non-believers than any holier-than-thou pontificator with nary a flaw, bad habit, or tarnished spot on his halo. Joe Box is a real Christian who is learning to live with his faith--warts and all. Readers of all kinds will both like him and identify with him, and I can't wait to join him in his next adventure.
When the Last Dog Dies: A Joe Box Mystery - by John Laurence Robinson.......2006-11-04
Joe Box is not your typical, "meek as a lamb, turn the other cheek Christian". A hard-boiled private detective who's only recently been saved, Joe's seen the darker side of life: he's survived a harrowing tour of duty in Vietnam, been exposed to the dark underbelly of the world through his brief stint as a cop and his work as a PI, and he's a man who's lost much: his father to a horrible work-related accident and his young wife and unborn son to a tragic car accident.
His recent salvation has rescued him from years of darkness and drunken oblivion, but still - he's got a lot of rough edges left. He's got a bit of a temper, and the burdens he's carried all these years would be enough to wear down even those of the most stalwart of faith - he's a bit cynical, too. However, with the support of his church and pastor, and old war-time mentor, and Agnes - a caring woman who might just be the new love of his life - he's growing. He's not perfect, he's no saint or missionary - but he's a born-again Christian who is learning the power of a saving faith.
Hopefully, he'll live long enough to see Christ's work on his life in full.
A dark specter from the past has reared its ugly head, from Joe's time in Vietnam. A fiendish enemy thought long gone and buried has returned, with deadly intent: he's picking off members of Joe's platoon, one by one. Making their deaths look like accidents, eerily snuffing their lives out in the manner which each fears the most, this killer - who is exerting otherworldly, inhuman precision and skill - is working his way back in revenge, putting Joe and those he cares about square in the cross-hairs.
As Joe scrambles for a way to defend himself from this real world but clearly demonic intent, he searches his memories of the past for clues, anything that will help him understand his foe better. He also realizes his survival depends less on his wit and gun, but more on the grace of the God to whom he's so recently entrusted his life. The fact remains, though: he's being stalked by a cold-hearted killer who will stop at nothing to make sure Joe's "pushing up daisies". Will Joe be forced to take a life for only the second time since `Nam?
John Laurence Robinson's character Joe Box is a revolutionary Christian character, in my mind, and his first adventure, Sock Monkey Blues, published in 2002, clearly paved the way for the development of current Christian fiction. Joe is irreverent, realistic, and tough: an honest portrayal of a new Christian struggling to reconcile his faith with his past reliance on his own human efforts. This novel is almost the perfect blend of classic, Ellery Queen/Sam Spade detective fiction and Christian fiction; it portrays honest truths about being a new Christian, but still exudes that "noir fiction" feel that crime story fans love.
Robinson handles multiple shifts in narrative well, going back and forth smoothly between the present and Joe's flashbacks to both Vietnam and parts of his life, and personally - I enjoyed the Vietnam segments best. This is not a negative comment on the novel, but with the exception of the conclusion, most of the novel's action is found when Joe and his buddies are tramping through the Vietnam jungle, pursuing the mysterious and elusive sniper who would someday turn the tables and hunt them (I liked these parts so much, in fact, that I hope Laurence revisits Box's days in Vietnam in the future - perhaps putting an entire story-line back there).
I especially appreciated the reality of this novel: even given a Christian's call to be meek, merciful, and to "turn the other cheek" - evil never rests, evil shows no quarter. As I'm sure many born-again Christians serving as policemen or in the military will attest to, when the bad guy starts shooting, sometimes the only thing you can do is pray -and shoot back.
Great Read.......2004-10-28
I am quickly becoming a fan of John Laurence Robinson. After reading his first book, Sock Monkey Blues, I couldn't wait to be captivated by another Joe Box mystery. I was not disappointed. UNTIL THE LAST DOG DIES is yet another treasure to be devoured by any mystery enthusiast. Mr. Robinson certainly has a gift for weaving interesting plots, creating larger than life characters, and blending reality with spirituality while maintaining a sense of humor.
This is a smooth, fast paced read that never lets you down. The reader easily feels like part of each scene while maintaining a healthy distance, lurking in the dark shadows. There should be a reason to read a book. Mr. Robinson's hook is the human character he has created with Joe Box. Joe is the sarcastic, street-smart private eye that maintains his edge while showing a hint of his vulnerabilities. He is a loveable character indeed. Add the suspense and you have one outstanding read. Well done and highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
I couldn't put it down!.......2002-05-07
I am a fan of Gillian Chan's short stories for young adults. I basically devoured her two short story collections, Glory Days, and Golden Girl, so when I saw that she had written a novel, I picked it up.
From the very first page, I was swept into the story. My own beloved dog had died just a week before I read this novel, and so the character of Dog especially appealed to me. It is not easy to fully develop an animal character in a realistic novel, but Chan achieves this admirably. I had tears in my eyes as I read it. Dog was so "real" that I could almost pat him!
And the historical research! As a historical novelist myself, I am very picky when I read other historicals, but this one is spot-on. Bravo!
I also loved the touch of fantasy.
The Carved Box is a universal tale that transcends age limits.

Customer Reviews:
Get more out of the "Curious Incident" by opening the "box".......2005-08-28
When I suggested "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" as the required summer reading for my campus's new freshmen, I unwittingly committed myself to teaching the group discussion leaders how to review the book. I had lots of ideas, thankfully, but when I discovered the Bookclub-in-a-Box available for Mark Haddon's outstanding novel, I was (appropriately) curious. I'm happy to say that the Box--really a detailed, annotated, fully-referenced booklet--enriches and enhances any review of the fictional Christopher Boone's story. "Box" author Marilyn Herbert cites sources and page numbers for most observations, allowing Christopher to speak for himself. This is not an erudite deconstruction or a Cliff's Notes; on the contrary, the "Box" pulls out passages and sentences I would otherwise have overlooked, and lures me back to get even more out of the original prose. The plot is reviewed, not merely summarized, and every character is offered for exploration as well. I found the Box rich in insights and ideas for my own projects and questions. In short, the Box helped me to do exactly what it promised: to launch a discussion, with myself and then with others who had read the book, with the result that we enjoyed it even more, understood it without picking it apart. The booklet's content is thoughtfully composed, leaving me to wonder at some odd misspellings and typographical errors. And I admit I was disappointed when I ordered a "Box" and a thin (if rich) booklet arrived instead. Perhaps I had expected props and toys, the promise of the term "box," which here really means not a tool kit but a complete package. It's a very good package and I'll look forward to seeing other Boxes in the Herbert's series.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic for any Scooby Lover!.......2007-03-19
These books are wonderful and keep my son interested. He is a Scooby Doo freak, so this was perfect. He is actually trying to read these and they keed his attention. Great words and great little stories.
Next step........2006-12-18
Great stories! Zoinks, this book isn't perfect but like Scoob stories are really fun to read. This is a set for kids reading at a level between the beginning phonics books and chapter books. I recommend the "Now I'm Reading" books for beginners. If you purchased this set thinking it was for beginners hold on to them. In a few months your kids will love them.
Not for beginner readers.......2006-10-26
The purpose of phonics readers is to teach kids to read. But these books use far too many complicated words. Kids who are just learning will only get frustrated trying to read these. And kids who are stronger readers will enjoy longer books with better stories.
How to teach your child bad habits:.......2005-11-11
My wife is a kindergarden teacher and just bought this set. I saw the cassette and volunteered to put it on a CD so that it could be divided into easily found chapters. As I listened to the cassette, "I was like, 'Wow!'"
First of all, the publisher should have thought of this. Anyone who has ever tried to find a particular song on a cassette knows how difficult that can be; try doing it with a room full of kindergarders. But that's a whole other issue. The real problem is the butchering of the English language.
One of the biggest (and most annoying) of all atrocities committed against the English language is the use of the universal stop, "like..." as in "I'm like, wow!" It's unbelievable that a book published as an educational tool would have this language peppered throughout. Once a child develops the habit of inserting this word into their speech, it becomes a difficult habit to break. We should be teaching good habits. My wife and I mentor a couple of children (9 and 10 years old). The word is inserted everywhere in their speech. "I'm like, stop it already!" If you don't want to teach your child such an annoying habbit, avoid this set. Needless to say, my wife is not using this material in her class.
Classic Scooby! Lots of Fun! Hip! Interesting! .......2005-05-17
This is the greatest phonics set I've seen! I wish there was a pack 2 out. My 4 1/2 son wanted to buy some Scooby Doo chapter books, but I told him he would need to learn to read a little better first. So we got this set to practice on.
This is NOT the set for some one who wants dull "Run, Jane, Run" style reading. This is for the kids (and parents) who like to actually learn and practice sounding things out.
Some of the words did stretch his abilities, but he learned not to be afraid of larger words and how to pay attention to all the sounds in a word. After all, it is hard to learn and grow if you never stretch yourself! He loved the "fun" words, like "surprize" and "pizza" and "ghosts". By the time he got near the end of the set, he was sounding out the tougher words even without my help. He is also proud of the fact that now he has some books that his teen-age sister is happy to listen to him read.
Both kids (teen & toddler alike) think the pictures are fun. This set is hip, interesting and the author has a sense of humor that appeals to kids. Now my son reads the bedtime stories to me! That is a cool switch!

Essential for the average canophile.......2004-06-13
If you like dogs, these are the notecards you have to have for any occasion that might arise. They're large and blank inside so they're appropriate for any event. They can be used as notecards, greeting cards, invitations, etc. You'll decide. They're also elegant since they come in plain white envelopes and are printed on really good stock. There's also an extra envelope to allow for one little goof.
The images on the cards are one of four different pictures of dogs. They're very pretty. Good photography and cute images.
They also come in a really pretty large box with magnetic closure which you'll really like and use long after the cards are all gone.
You don't need to love or even like dogs to like this notecard set. It has everything a good set has, good color, good quality paper, enough cards and envelopes, fun enough and yet elegant, and a pretty box to store all of it, too boot. If you do love dogs however, I don't think you'd regret getting it.
