The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, and Have You Seen My Cat?) have earned him a prominent place in the children's book hall of fame. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
A big happy frog, a plump purple cat, a handsome blue horse, and a soft yellow duck-- all parade across the pages of this delightful book. Children will immediately respond to Eric Carle's flat, boldly colored collages. Combined with Bill Martin's singsong text, they create unforgettable images of these endearing animals.

A+.......2007-09-30
I've used this book (the hard cover version) to teach English to my Kindergarten English Language Learners. They like it! I also give this as a gift to my friends' pre-schoolers. It's a keeper.
Addicting!.......2007-09-27
From the day we purchased this book, my daughter asks for it EVERYTIME she lies down for a nap or bedtime. I quickly learned it by heart so I could tell her the story in the dark (many times she will fall asleep before I finish). My husband however just changes the story a little bit. My daughter can now read it to us (only 21 months old) and does so often. This book has really helped her learn her animals and colors. I will be giving this book for a shower gift from now on.
Eric Carle.......2007-09-23
Anything by Eric Carle is excellent. This is my son's favorite book. He's 3 and know every animal before we get to the page.
Wonderful for 12mo olds!.......2007-09-20
We bought this for our daughter for her first birthday. The text is simple, teaching colors and animals. The illustrations are, of course, beautiful. She loves this book!
Inspires reading.......2007-09-09
My 3-year-old granddaughter found this book easy to memorize. She loved being able to anticipate which animal would be next, along with its color. This, in turn, gave her the feeling of being able to read, and I believe it was this book that inspired her to learn how to read "for real" in the next few months. I'd recommend it for younger children as well.

Customer Reviews:
A fun read.......2007-09-21
My girls and I so enjoy reading the other book in the series, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?". My twin girls are 2 and they would actually sit with the other book and read it to out loud to each other, so it was a great find to have another book in the series for us to read, the illustrations are colorful and a great book to learn new vocabulary words.
Reading to your kids.......2007-09-08
This book is a great one to read to your kids.
I like this one more than his Panda Bear and Brown Bear because I can get the kids more excited about sounds. I've read it to groups of young kids and encourage them to make the sounds with me. I'll "roar" like a lion and "snort" like a hippo and the kids will parrot me. They have a lot of fun with this and you get them to start talking about sounds other animals make. They will remember the sounds after just the first reading and get excited any time they see me pick up the book.
It's really cute to watch one kid "read" this to another after we've read it in groups a few times. The kids will remember the animals and will sometimes ask "what do you hear?" and make the sounds for each animal as they go through. It's a wonderful feeling seeing them learn and remember.
Must-have book for kids!.......2007-08-26
My kids love this book and "Brown Bear Brown Bear." The illustrations are wonderful, and they love the animals!
Terrible.......2007-08-08
As any reader of the Brown Bear knows, these books are really meant to be read out loud. But who the heck knows how a peacock sounds (can YOU yelp?)? Or several of the other animals here. I just tossed it away in frustration.
Fun Book.......2007-07-02
My 18 month old daughter enjoys this book. We have fun looking at all the different zoo animals. The one thing that I don't like is the last page. I wish that it had pictures of the animals instead of children dressed up as animals. When my daughter is older she will like that.
Customer Reviews:
Homonyms!.......2006-02-19
Excellent book for all language arts teachers in primary and middle schools (use for review). This is another book in Cleary's series and it gets the job done! Excellent springboard book to focus the students!
A Fun Series.......2005-12-19
My 6-year-old son loves this book. I would have given this book five stars, but for the typography; the font is a little too wacky for beginning readers.
"How Much Can a Bare Bear Bear?" is written in fun and engaging rhyme, with quirky and creative illustrations by Brian Gable. Homonyms and homophones are combined in silly yet perfectly understandable sentences --
A SIOUX might not SUE if he KNEW that the GNU that he bought wasn't NEW like you said.
-- which make this book not only a great teaching tool, but also a very fun read. I'm looking forward to checking out the other titles in this series.
What would we teachers do without Cleary and Gable?.......2005-08-20
This book EXPLODES with great word play!! My favorite? "My Niece can see Grease, both in Greece and in Nice, a Czech could be writing a check. A maid could be made to be very afraid if she heard a big herd on the deck."
I've read all the books on homonyms and homophones that are out there, and nothing comes close to this exciting text and those lovable cartoon cats.

Fans of Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? will be delighted to see another title in this lilting call and response series. Much like their earlier picture books, Panda Bear features a string of fine feathered (and furry and scaly) friends watching over each other. In this book, however, all the animals are endangered, from a swinging spider monkey to a strutting macaroni penguin (kids will get a kick out of that name!) to a splashing sea lion. Carle's trademark tissue paper collages will be as familiar--and welcome--as the text ("Whooping Crane, Whooping Crane, what do you see?" "I see a black panther strolling by me."); young readers will quickly get the hang of the rhythm and join right in. The book concludes on a hopeful note, with a dreaming child seeing the ten f! eatured animals "all wild and free--/ that's what I see!" Martin includes a note on endangered species that may spark concern and interest in older readers--our hope for these disappearing creatures. (Ages 3 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Thirty-five years after their first groundbreaking collaboration, the creators of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? reunite to address the important topic of animal conservation. A Bald Eagle soars, a Spider Monkey swings, a Macaroni Penguin struts, and a Red Wolf sneaks through Bill Martin Jr's rhythmic text and Eric Carle's vibrant images, and all are watched over by our best hope for the future-a dreaming child.
Customer Reviews:
Exciting new spin on Brown Bear, Brown Bear.......2007-10-03
This book follows the same pattern as the classic Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? but with an exciting new spin -- exotic, endangered animals. It also has a delightful surprise ending that makes it perfect for a bedtime story.
-Sherry North, author, Because You Are My Baby
Sorta Weird.......2007-09-11
My 2-year old twins like this book because they like to see the animals, but I think they'd get more out of it if more mainstream animals were used. I think they're a little thrown by animals like "macaroni penguin" - sounds like food to them. The dreaming child part is weird looking too.
I think it's great to use endangered animals, although my kids aren't exactly as concerned about animal endangerment as I am. It's not a bad book or anything, but honestly, if I had read it in a bookstore, I wouldn't have bought it.
There is hope!.......2007-08-19
My son loves Eric Carle books, and this is our most recent addition to his collection. I just caught on to the fact that all of the animals are endangered, but I think it's so cool that one of them isn't anymore! The bald eagle was recently taken off the endangered species list. I think that gives us (and especially kids) hope that more of those animals can come off that list, and maybe even in their lifetime.
Everyone should have this book.......2007-06-16
In a world of highways, malls, highrises, greed and land excavation, it's good to find a book that dares to dream of thick forests, lush jungles and untouched oceans where wonderful creatures can thrive. This is my favorite of all the "bear" books. It's statement is strong and I can't wait until my 16 month old daughter can recognize it.
I should like this one, but..........2007-03-07
I oughta like it, I want to like it, but it just left me flat. More to the point, it left my kids flat. The two stars I gave this were for the illustrations -- they are really cool, as you'd expect with Eric Carle. Normally, you can't go wrong with Bill Martin, but I guess everybody has their bad days. The language doesn't flow as well as the other bear books, and that makes it a little awkward for reading aloud. We have Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, and both are big favorites with the under-3 set around our house. Panda Bear just doesn't make the grade.

Customer Reviews:
Play on words not appreciated!.......2007-06-19
Darling book, love the sing-songy quality about the verses, BUT, there's a typo, and after emailing the publisher, I learned that it's an intentional "play on words". It's "Jesse Bear", not "Jesse Bare" (as appears on the bathtub page). Okay, it's a little funny that it's on that page where presumably Jesse Bear is a bare bear, but is it too much to ask that our children's books be gramatically correct? I'm not sure why the editors think they can (or should!) try to pull this off! This "play on words" adds nothing to the story, but it sure does add confusion for early readers, not to mention frustration for parents who, like me, would like to instill proper grammar/word usage! I prefer to buy books that have actually been edited! There are plenty of other great books! (I don't object to the fun with words, but is it too much to ask that it be gramatically correct? If it's a play on words you're after, check out the Amelia Bedelia books. The author does a lovely job of playing with words/meanings but in a grammatically correct fashion!)
Jesse.......2007-06-02
This book was smaller than the original I had several years ago. Kind of pricey, too. Great book -- that's why I wanted another copy.
Excellent book!.......2007-05-31
This is the perfect toddler book. I got it from the library for a homeschool lesson, and my daughter loved it so much I'm going to buy our own copy. The images are colorful and soft, with lots to look at. The story (or poetry) is very simple and short. I like how, even though the story centers around baby Jesse and his mom, the dad is involved also. The story is very warm, with obvious affection shown for Jesse by his parents.
A family favorite.......2007-04-21
Our family has loved this book through three kids - both boys & girls. Now our family refers to each other as Daddy Bear, Momma Bear, brother bear, sister bear. It is a fun, sweet book for little ones. Toddlers will relate.
A classic in our family!.......2007-04-10
This has been a favorite story of my children's...and one that I have enjoyed reading for many years! The rhyming is very infectious and will stay with you long after you have closed the book. The story is beautifully illustrated with many little details. They alone make a fun "game" of "find the ___" in the pictures!
It is a nice bedtime story as it follows Jesse through his day and all the way until he is tucked into bed at night.
This is one story that will always be on our shelves!
My only "complaint" is that this particular version that I bought for a friend turned out to be a smaller-sized paperback version. Since it is such a great book, I would invest in a hardbound copy next time!

These pictures in the book are so Bright and Bold, I may just buy an extra book and frame the pictures for my soon to be born daughters bedroom, Care Bears is the theme.
Book Description
Can you guess what smell Bear is sniffing for?
Young fans will love to follow Bear around his big blue house and discover all the surprising smells there are to scratch and sniff underneath the flaps inside this scent-sational book.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing "scratch & Sniff".......2001-07-28
Don't bother buying this book if you are looking for a scratch & sniff book. The smells are so faint, they are almost non-existent. Additionally, the "scratch & sniff" area is very, very small, and difficult for toddler to find, let alone scratch. Very, very disappointed. Story was poorly written also. If you want scratch and sniff books, stick to the DK line (ie, "scratch and sniff party", etc..)
Smells like a good book!.......2000-03-28
We were thrilled when we found a copy of What's that Smell? for our daughter for Christmas.
Bear's famous line "What's that smell?" is very popular around our house so this book was a quick hit. The lift up flaps entertain our toddler and she loves to sniff her book.
Her very favorite part is the last flap, under it is a small mirror and she laughs out loud every time she lifts it and sees herself.
I am sure What's that Smell will be a big hit in your house too!

Our son is OBSESSED.......2002-03-09
Our 8-month-old son can't get enough of this book! A friend of ours sent it to him for Christmas and he LOVES it. All we have to do is pick it up and start reading and he comes crawling at the speed of light screaming to be on our lap. I normally don't like books with gimics ( The books is actually a sort of jack in the box with a stuffed animal bear that "pops out of his den") but this one is very sweet and cuddly and my son can't get enough!
Book Description
A time now almost lostAmerica and Europe of the 1940s and 1950sindelibly recalled in prose pieces by a celebrated poet.
In a series of freewheeling rambles that combine autobiography and meditation, Gerald Stern explores significant and representative events in his life. He describes the dour Sundays of Calvinist Pittsburgh, punctuated by his parents' weekly battles. We have glimpses of him as a wilderness camp counselor, and later, having been declared 4-F, as a postwar draftee (a stint that includes jail). In the 1950s he savors the romance of Paris. Stern also tells of being shot in Newarkthe bullet is still in his neck to prove it. Other scenes include being mistaken for Allen Ginsberg and encounters with Andy Warhol. And in the ineffably tender "The Ring," Stern recalls his mother's second engagement ring, "when they were a bit richer, if a bit broader and a bit more weary."
As in his poetry, Stern discovers his subject as he goes along, relishing that discovery and expanding on it. There is no other voice like Gerald Stern's, funny and reflective and opinionatedand forgiving.
Customer Reviews:
One of the BEST books about weather for the elementary set.......2006-12-08
I checked out a gob of weather books when teaching my first-graders. This one was by far the best. It explained the weather in a simple, easy manner with wonderful illustrations. But it was not a 'baby' book. The author covered a wide variety of weather topics in language that engaged and taught. In a few short, clear sentences we were able to learn how to identify clouds or the types of wind and rain storms. I plan on purchasing this book since it will be used over and over for reference and for just plain fun.
Great book for young students learning about weather........1999-02-28
I am a student teahcer. When I had to plan a unit for my kindergarteners about weather, I did not know how to teach it on their level. This book really helped me to come up with the right words to help the students understand what I was trying to get across to them. GREAT BOOK!!! I checked it out from the library at the school I am working at; however, I WILL be getting my own personal copy. Thank you Gail!!!
