Book Description
Giants. We must face them. Yet, we need not face them alone.
This profound look at the life of David digs deeply into the defeats he suffered, and the victories he won, as he faced the giants in his life. When David focused on God, giants tumbled. But when David focused on giants…
he stumbled.
Goliaths still roam in our world. Debt. Disaster. Dialysis. Divorce. Deceit. Disease. Depression. These super-sized challenges swagger and strut into our lives, pilfering our sleep, embezzling our peace and robbing us of our joy. And while these giants try to dominate our lives, we know what to do! We've learned what David learned, and we do what David did. We become God focused. We pick up five stones. We make five decisions. And we take a swing.

Overcoming circumstances.......2007-09-29
I was given this book, it was a good read, but the information wasn't anything new, nor was it very impressive. It was a smooth reader, but almost to the point of beating a dead horse. Now, I am not putting down the work of the Cross or Jesus or the Holy Spirit or even King David. It's just the same ole story with a different author. I did find some of Max's antedotes and case histories of his own family interesting and the view of the Rainbow, that was most interesting.
Would I buy the book, no. Would I recommend someone else to buy the book? Not really. There are better books for the money.
Here are some examples: They Smell Like Sheep by Dr. Lynn Anderson
True Discipleship by Kossler, The Holiest of All by Andrew Murray, Power Filled Living by R.A. Torrey. These are just a few.
I've found when we are facing the giants, if we focus on God, Center ourself on Him, in Him and then look outside the box, so-to-speak and allow the Spirit of God to lead us to someone else that is hurting more than ourselves, God will work out our problems usually by the interaction of our neighbors.
In Christ we pray. Amen.
Learning from David's Triumphs and Mistakes.......2007-09-21
Max Lucado is known for his encouraging books, and this book is no exception. Here, he studies King David, both the good and the bad, to show us how to face the giants in our lives.
The ultimate lesson is simple, when your focus is on God, giants fall. Yet he uses stories from first and second Samuel, both the good and the bad, to show us how this played out in David's life.
The book works as a biography, showing us the events in David's life as they happened. While most chapters are a self contained lesson, it does allow us to see how one event often led to another.
Obviously, we see David fighting Goliath. But we also see him hiding from Saul, his friendship with Jonathan, hiding with the enemy, keeping his promises, falling into adultery and murder with Bathsheba, and watching his own children spin out of control. From this we learn the importance of friends and family, but ultimately the importance of putting our focus on God.
Max Lucado very rarely brings anything new to the table. That's certainly the case here. There is very little I haven't heard before. But he always puts such a fresh, encouraging spin on things, I always see things in a new light. And even when admonishing us, he still does it gently.
I set this book down reluctantly when I finished. My heart was encouraged, and my focus was where it needed to be, God. If you need some help remembering where your focus needs to be, this book is for you.
Max's Best .......2007-09-17
This is absolutely the most enlightening and funny book I've ever read from a Christian author.
This wonderful book is deep enough for an elephant to swim in, yet shallow enough for a child to wade in.
That describes Facing Your Giants to a T.
Like all Lucado books, awesome.......2007-09-06
An insightful tie to old testament events around Davids life and life for us today.
Wonderful book!.......2007-08-26
Story of King David's successes and failures confronting the giants in his life, and how we can learn from them. Many challenging question in study guide at the end of book.

Customer Reviews:
Changed my life the day I started reating.......2007-10-09
This book is great. I was afraid it would be a lot of lame "You're special!" stuff. Instead Tony gives simple tools that change the way you think and react to emotions and events. I no longer dwell on unimportant small things and instead move forward toward greater things.
I have an older edition, I think from 1992, which was somewhat dated, since it has some humorous and ironic references to "Influential people like Michael Jackson" or the interesting story about a young kid who gave it is all that turned out to be "none other than OJ Simpson".
The exercises were quite helpful and enlightening, this book will make you understand yourself in a new way.
Good book from sketchy infomercial guy.......2007-09-21
First of all I do think this is a powerful book. This is due more to Tony Robbins ability to generate enthusiasm in the reader and his ability to organize already-published materials than it does with his own originality though.
I'm not the biggest Tony Robbins fan nowadays. I've heard him make too many ridiculous, unproven comments on his tapes to completely take him seriously. And his infomercial persona is hard to shake, but at the heart of it this is really powerful book for transformation just like he claims. It's mainly things he picked up from older self-help books and things like NLP but Tony does organize it in a usable fashion and really gets you pumped up to put some changes into effect.
I went through a hard time many years ago and this book helped me turn one of the worst experiences in my life into one of the most productive, so for that I will always have a soft spot for Tony and this book.
I do recommend staying away from his overpriced seminars though. Everything a smart and motivated person needs is already in this book. You do not need to pay a penny more to anyone over the cost of this book if you are serious about making life changes.
I'd also like to point out that this is a tighter, stronger book than his first one, and recommend a new person start here.
A Great Book That Never Claims to be Pure NLP.......2007-09-02
Awaken the Giant has it's place on bookshelves if for no other reason that it is a workable system to empower a person's entire life.
In doing this, Robbins has done an outstanding job to make change techniques applicable to the average person. His previous book, Unlimited Power, conveys Robbins' understanding of NLP and therefore can be claimed to be a book on the subject. The problem with Unlimited Power is that there countless books on NLP by much more reputable and learned authors than Robbins.
Awaken the Giant is a book that extends well past his first works and the way I see it, adds tremendous value to the field of positive psychology. How, I hear you mutter? Awaken the Giant, using NLP and conditioning techniques at its core, is a well thought out and cohesive system of change, rather than a collection of insights and techniques as many pure NLP books are. The book really focuses on taking control of your life and how to do it. It is not a book of fluffy half-theories and heart-warming anecdotes as most self help books are.
Awaken the Giant never claims to be a book on NLP, and, in fact, takes a main premise of NLP - you have all the resources inside you - and helps organise those resources so they work for you, not against you.
The book is a little long, and could have been a bit more concise, however, it is presented in a much user friendly way than Unlimited Power.
As an NLPer, I appreciate the outcome Robbins had in mind for this book - a whole system for the average person couldn't tell you the difference between a metaprogram and a submodality, but is probably frustrated with underachieving.
Real Results in the Real World.......2007-08-13
I bought this book 3 years ago. I was 35, selling cars, making less than $35,000 a year, fat, a smoker, and wondering where all the supposed "promise" I had ever went. I had a few good years in the past, but they were long gone. I didn't just read this book, I consumed it. Like Baptists read the Bible I read this book, and I started a success journal. Now, 3 years later. I work for myself (if you can call doing whatever I want work) and make $10,000 - $15,000 per month. I work out 6 days a week, I don't smoke, every relationship I have with everyone I love is 3x better than it ever has been.
I read "motivation", "self-help" and "how to succeed" books since I was 19 years old. And I did my best to follow them... not much happened in the end. This book, when Tony said "do this", I did it and there was an INSTANT change. Instant change after Instant change turned into the beginnings of a new life after 6 months, the taste of freedom after 18 months, and now unstoppable, unflappable, unimaginable success and happiness for a guy with a high school degree and never a penny in the bank before my next paycheck (until after Tony Robbins). Is this an unvarnished RAVE? You bet! I read this ONE book and applied it to my life. Now I have the life I always wanted.
The good, the bad, and the " LETS MOVE ON ALREADY!!!".......2007-07-26
My review falls some where in the between the reviews discussing the overwhelming amount of FLUFF contained in this book and the fact that Robbins' excercises can work!!! This 500+ page epic should really be revised by robbins to help readers concentrate on the true main points he is making. remove a three quarters of the anecdotes and and integrate the small subjects of vocabulary and metaphors into the bigger more overarching principles and remove about half of the crappy quotes sporadically placed in the book and you might have something worthy of 4 squares or at least 3 1/2. But no matter what read it get the brunt of the book and its message and prepare yourself to not agree and not follow through and its OKAY!!! Mind you the ever so bright eyed and bushy tailed Robbins' himself is absolutely no picture perfect poster child but must still be greatly acknowledged for the work and effort he has put in and the many lives he has empowered and bettered.

Book Description
"Michael," said Karl. "There's a really big bear in the backyard." This is how three children meet Stillwater, a giant panda who moves into the neighborhood and tells amazing tales. To Addie he tells a story about the value of material goods. To Michael he pushes the boundaries of good and bad. And to Karl he demonstrates what it means to hold on to frustration. With graceful art and simple stories that are filled with love and enlightenment, Jon Muth -- and Stillwater the bear -- present three ancient Zen tales that are sure to strike a chord in everyone they touch.
Customer Reviews:
Great for philosophy enthusiasts of any age (and anyone who likes big pandas).......2007-09-22
Zen Shorts is a picture book written and illustrated by Jon J. Muth. But it's also a short story collection. And it's also a philosophy book. And it has a giant panda. Oh, and it is a Caldecott Honor book too.
The story starts when siblings Addy, Michael, and Karl meet Stillwater, a large Panda who wanders into their backyard to retrieve his umbrella. I love the opening scenes of the story. Karl, the youngest sibling, is looking out a window and telling Michael he sees a huge bear. Eventually all of the kids go out and say hello to Stillwater. Addy introduces Karl, who is "shy around bears he doesn't know." I find that phrase so enchanting. This kind of charm continues throughout the book.
The next day Addy meets Stillwater for tea. Then Michael and Stillwater hang out. Then Karl goes swimming with Stillwater.
Each outing is accompanied by an appropriate short story. The first is about a man (panda) who gives a gift to a robber. Another is about a man who knows that luck is a many-faceted thing. The final story is about a monk carrying an unnecessary burden. I'll never explain the stories as well as Muth tells them, so you should just read the book.
The illustrations of Stillwater and the children are beautifully rendered watercolors. The coloring is subtle with quite intricate line work for the drawings. The stories between the "real" story are printed on pastel backgrounds and illustrated with silhouettes so that they have a clearly different look from the rest of the book.
When you're finished you should also check out the afterward which explains the underlying philosophy for each story. (Muth has a lot of Buddhist/Taoist influences.)
This is a great book to read with older children because even if they don't get the philosophy, the stories are approachable and they'll get something from it. (Even youngsters will enjoy the pictures.) It's a great introduction to philosophy, a fact that becomes clear after reading the afterward, for "students" of any age. Muth does an admirable job creating a picture book that children and grownups can enjoy together.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!.......2007-09-19
this book has it all, great watercolor paintings (i am a classically trained artist so this is important to me), great story, and meaningfull messages. i read this to my two year old daughter who is a book fanatic and can sit quietly for more than an hour and listen to long stories. for those of you with very small kids who may just be begging to read longer stories hear is some advice 1.don't give up if your child does not sit through the whole book the first time you read it small children, like my daughter, like farmiliar things and sometimes it just takes a few passes for them to reconize and chose a certain story, 2.don't chose to read a book when your child is bubbling over with energy, and 3.with longer stories it can also help to use a lot of inflection and tone to create intrest before your little one starts turning the page. this book is moderate in wording, not super long but not as simple as short verses or ryming stories. this book has a certain eligance to it that reflectes its message. it is just beautiful.
Gentle way to raise issues w/ kids.......2007-09-18
I like to treat my kids with respect and gentleness. Books that help me are a treasure. Jon Muth is a regular source of those kinds of books. Zen Shorts is not overdone or watered down. It is simple and beautiful and useful. It makes great literature more accessible to young folks. It helps parents and kids trying to live a more mindful or aware life.
A review by a five year old.......2007-09-15
My son Tyler says:
"This book is really great. From this book I learned about friendship and kindness, even though I'm already a kind boy. And I learned that good luck and bad luck are all mixed up. Please buy this book for your child. Bye."
Beutiful Zen Moments.......2007-09-13
Finally a children's book that not only entertains but also make the child (at least my son) raise questions and discuss. I picked up the book on a wimp from the return cart in the bookstore and I have enjoyed reading it with my son ever since. We are waiting anxiously for the next Zen book from Jon Muth.

Although this book was around when many of today's parents were youngsters, it has remained a steadfast must-have in every toddler's library. For starters, it's a great vocabulary guide that names the many things that go (and some that haven't a prayer of going, but are great fun to imagine anyway). It's also teeming with detail-rich scenes and characters on every page, teaching children the rewards of looking long and closely (such as finding the hidden "Goldbug" in each spread). Along the way it entertains with the silly and slapstick--everything from toothpaste and toothbrush cars to six fire department vehicles that show up to extinguish a ladybug-size fire in a miniature pink convertible. What's most amazing about this book, however, is its longevity. When you purchase it for your fledgling talker, you should consider it an investment. Even 11-, 12-, and 13-year-olds are known to pore over the book nostalgically, cooing at Lowly Worm and eagerly tracking Officer Flossie's book-long chase after that irresponsible, speedster driver in a cowboy hat. (Ages 2 and older) --Gail Hudson
Customer Reviews:
Eternal delight.......2007-10-08
You will be asked to read this every night. Your child will sleep with it, and bring it out to breakfast. The hardcover binding thankfully is up to repeated page-turning by a toddler, and the printing is vibrant and clear. I prefer "What Do People Do All Day" as it tells more stories, but who can tell a three-year-old!
Cars and Trucks and Things That Go.......2007-09-29
I have been sharing this wonderful book with so many new mothers of boys ever since my 32-year old enjoyed his book as a child. It is so colorful and eye-catching and it is such fun to find Goldbug. It is a wonderful way to share with your child and to help him use his mind.
Timeless!.......2007-09-28
My 37 year old daughter loved this book, especially searching for the Goldbugs. I bought a copy for her almost-three year old daughter and she loves it just as much. Makes me happy!
Great book for kids, and nostalgic for parents.......2007-09-19
My husband wanted to buy this book for our two year old daughter because he remembered it very well from his childhood. Even though there are many pages our daughter loves to flip through them and see the different types of automobiles and trucks, and she loves to find the little goldbug on each page. The book is a little larger than most of her other books, but she doesn't have any trouble turning the pages, especially if it is laying on the floor. As she gets older she should not have any trouble with it if it is in her lap. I think that this book will entertain her for years to come, as there are so many different things to look at on every page, plus the fun of finding goldbug.
Lots to see.......2007-09-14
It probably helps that my son is obsessed with "things that go", but this has been one of his favorites for some time. He could sit and stare at the pages for a long time - well a long time for a 2-year old. There's a lot going on on each page, so I thought he might be a little overwhelmed with it all, but there are things on each page he focuses on. Dingo the dog and Goldbug help tie all the pages together. It helps his observation skills to search for them.

Book Description
ANDY WARHOL "GIANT" SIZE is a spectacular visual biography of the life and career of Andy Warhol.Weighing in at 15 pounds, this enormous book is packed with 2,000 images and documents, many rare or previously unpublished.Taking its inspiration from Warhol's over-the-top nature, ANDY WARHOL "GIANT" SIZE depicts the major events, people, works and moments in the artist's life told in chronological order by subject. As Warhol almost never threw anything away (from restaurant receipts to postcards), the featured material in the book has been painstakingly compiled. As the publisher of The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonn+, Phaidon was granted unprecedented access to an array of public and private image and memorabilia archives and collections, including the Andy Warhol Foundation in New York and the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh as well as the holdings of many Warhol collaborators, friends, and photographers of the period. The large-format of ANDY WARHOL "GIANT" SIZE enables the reader to explore in detail hundreds of fascinating photographs, letters, personal correspondence, art works, film stills, tickets, receipts, celebrity head shots, notes, press clippings and ephemera all featured in this one of a kind publication. The book also features illuminating texts by insiders Bruno Bischofberger, Ronnie Cutrone, David Dalton, Kenneth Goldsmith, Ivan Karp and Peggy Phelan. What is unique about ANDY WARHOL "GIANT" SIZE is that it provides fascinating insight into the public and private life of Warhol and in many cases also reveals the stories behind his art works. The book provides amazing comparisons between his work and his life that have never been demonstrated visually in such a way before. For example, it not only features Warhol's famous "Mao" series, but also includes ephemera from a 1982 trip to China (his passport, boarding pass, a souvenir from his hotel, etc.) alongside a photo of Warhol standing in front of the Forbidden City in Beijing with an official Mao portrait in the background. This important new publication includes a staggering quantity and array of colorful material including: Warhol's birth certificate, citing Andrew Warhola' was born on 8/6/28 in Pittsburgh; childhood photographs of his family; the magazine tear sheet showing the first article he illustrated for Glamour when he arrived in New York in 1949;numerous photos of Warhol with his mother; artworks for gold shoes he created in the 1950s; a letter from the MOMA dated 1959 in which the Director of the Museum's Collections rejects a work of art Warhol offered them as a gift; photographs of Warhol posing with Edie Sedgwick in a New York fashion shoot; personal letters from Mick Jagger and Liz Taylor; pictures of Warhol in the office working on Interview; pictures of Warhol private views; a series of shots of Warhol in drag; the program from his Memorial Mass on 4/1/87 and his gravestone.ANDY WARHOL "GIANT" SIZE is the only publication available that features Warhol's entire life, work and words in one book. The visual biography offers a behind-the-scenes look at the New York art scene of the 1950s to the 1980s, and provides a new perspective on an artist who continues to be endlessly fascinating to those inside and outside of the art world.

Very Impressive. Great coffee table book!.......2007-07-03
While I admit I have not read this book cover to cover yet, it is a great book to own if you are a fan of pop culture, POP art, or any of the characters from the Factory. There is a lot of biographical text, but far more pictures and insight into the art, so it is really quite fascinating. I am a huge fan of pop culture during the sixties and of Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick. My husband is not. He loves this book, too, though as it quite nice for the coffee table, and a conversation piece. It provides exposure to the world of Andy Warhol and the Factory without the overt homoerotic tone that some of the other books have. I would definitely recommend this book.
Good for Killing Alot of Space.......2007-06-26
The main attraction of "Giant Size" is just that it is physically giant sized. I have the book set on one of my display cases and is just way to cumbersome to read. It's chronological layout of Warhol's life and work seem very accurate even though I have not been able to read this book rather a good skimming. Interesting documents of his life are displayed throughout including photos of his childhood.
I recommend this book for anyone who needs an enormous coffee table book, or is a fan of Modern Art or just loves Andrew Warhola.

great word book.......2007-09-12
I loved this book as a kid because of all the detail on every page. A kid could spend so much time looking at all the words/objects on the page and then imagining what the people are doing.
I loved it when I was a kid so I wanted to share the fun of this book with a modern day kid.
My 18 mo old's favorite book.......2007-09-06
My son loves this book. He leafs through the pages, studying the pictures, and he loves to point at items and say the name. He loves this book so much that we also purchased Scarry's "Things That Go" which he loves even more!
Other Books.......2007-09-03
A book for kids that are learning to read. It is basically narrated by a bunch of cute fuzzy bears doing a tour of a town and all the common objects and situations that you might encounter in such a setting, enabling words to go with pictures so that children can go through them and learn to identify the objects as an aid to reading. A well done book.
Big book!.......2007-07-24
This is a LARGE book, like 12 x 14 inches. So the pages are pretty big, a little unwieldy for small kids, and mine are 18 and 32 months, they have already torn a couple pages just because it's hard for them to flip the big pages. They loves the Richard Scary animals though and like me to read it to them. It is a busy book, lots to see! Took me about 30 mins to read it to them the first time. Great book - I had this one when I was little, but in smaller binding!
A timeless masterpiece!.......2007-06-02
I am twenty-five years old, and my first copy of this book was very old and tattered when I read it in the early 80s. I still have and treasure it, but I am looking forward to buying a new sturdy copy to give my son (now six months old) before long. This was hands down my favorite picture book as a child, and even now, every time I pick it up, I wind up mesmerized by the pages and studying every single picture before I put it back down. I'm so pleased now that my son is here, so I have an excuse to read it again without looking silly!

Book Description
Creativity is crucial to business success. But too often, even the most innovative organization quickly becomes a "giant hairball"--a tangled, impenetrable mass of rules, traditions, and systems, all based on what worked in the past--that exercises an inexorable pull into mediocrity. Gordon McKenzie worked at Hallmark Cards for thirty years, many of which he spent inspiring his colleagues to slip the bonds of Corporate Normalcy and rise to orbit--to a mode of dreaming, daring and doing above and beyond the rubber-stamp confines of the administrative mind-set. In his deeply funny book, exuberantly illustrated in full color, he shares the story of his own professional evolution, together with lessons on awakening and fostering creative genius.
Originally self-published and already a business "cult classic", this personally empowering and entertaining look at the intersection between human creativity and the bottom line is now widely available to bookstores. It will be a must-read for any manager looking for new ways to invigorate employees, and any professional who wants to achieve his or her best, most self-expressive, most creative and fulfilling work.

Anecdotal Book on How To Compromise to Avoid the "Hairball"..........2007-10-06
Unfortunately for me, I have bad habits- like eating good food and sleeping in the climate controlled indoors. That means getting paid, and in corporate America you don't get paid orbiting the hairball. You get paid only if you're in the thick of it. This book is essentially a book on compromising to avoid, rather than confronting the obvious problems of working in the typical corporate environment.
I rated it three stars because some of the information is actually useful, it's well written (though the artwork and type are annoying) for the fence-sitters it's aimed at.
I enjoyed reading it in the context of vague memories of corporate life I have dating back to 2002 and prior. When I finally lost my last job-- well, I didn't actually lose it, I know where it is (Bhopal I think)-- I decided I'd stay way far away from the hairball. Orbit is too close.
Read it for what it's worth- but if you're reading it because you're really discouraged with life in the cubicle, and being on the electronic leash with your laptop and crackberry wherever you go-- I suggest OUT, not up.
Inspiring, creative, and a thought-provoker. Not to miss........2007-09-22
"Orbiting the Giant Hairball" by Gordon MacKenzie is a not-to-miss book for anyone who is looking to tap into their creative mind.
The book is not for the dull-minded, however. MacKenzie recalls several situations in his career at Hallmark cards, and offers advice in the form of examples.
The last chapter of the book was what made this book completely worth while. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I guarantee you will not regret it.
A Guide to Chaos, Confinement, and Creativity.......2007-08-21
What Orbiting the Giant Hairball (OTGH) is not is another book on corporate management, although heads of creative departments would do well to understand the principles Gordon MacKenzie suggests. OTGH is a guide to chaos, confinement, and creativity. As an artist, I've worked most of my career in the corporate world (the Hairball). The paradox is that creation takes an entirely different set of rules (mainly the defiance of them), which puts creativity at odds with the organizational compulsion of the Hairball. On the one hand, a company can't exist without structure; on the other, artistic expression is antithetical to defined limits. How do you find congruence as a Creative hemmed in a left-brained organization? MacKenzie suggests the middle ground is an orbital path that is free to explore the infinite, but not independent of the organization.
MacKenzie's book is an effortless read, laid out to take advantage of white space. Doodles mark the margins and gaps, with chapter heads and illustrations taking up 4-page spreads. Some chapters break out in freeform cartoons on lined notepaper, with Chapter 19 devoted to the statement, "Orville Wright did not have a pilot's license." Often digressing, you feel there's always a point to the random character of the work. The book presents itself as an artistic exploration, even if the drawings are primitive in the style of a child's hand. What MacKenzie has to say is thought-provoking. Don't get tangled in the hairball, becoming another crony of the institution. Mentoring is not the same as managing. Dynamic forces exist in the chaos of uncertainty. Orbit provides a place for creative expression that isn't stifling. Find your unique voice and express your one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
How to become a Corporate Fool !.......2007-05-26
What a delightful book! You have to read this - if you interested in fostering creativity within a corporation.
The author is Gordon McKenzie, who worked for Hallmark Cards (the main greeting card company here in the US) for 30 years. His last title at the company was ¡¥Creative Paradox¡¦.
The main point in his book is that corporations come into existence through the creativity of their founders, but subsequently start to become stratified and ossified because of the need to do things ¡¥that we know work¡¦, thereby discouraging creativity.
The bias against creativity does not just exist in large corporations. I particularly liked his story about asking school children in different grades how many thought they were artists. Invariably, the older the kids, they less hands would go up. They have been taught that they were not creative, or that being creative is not ¡¥normal¡¦.
The giant hairball is his analogy for the corporate body with all the rules and regulations, and his prescription is to know how to keep within the orbit of the corporation without being absorbed and suffocated into the main mass. Another useful analogy is how when water-skiing, you do not need to follow directly in the wake of the boat, but can at times move in an arc around the back of the boat, or even sometimes get ahead of the boat.
This is a small book full of gems! I highly recommend it.
Here is a quote I really like:
¡§If we do not let go, we make prisoners of ourselves¡¨
The book¡¦s subtitle is: ¡§A Corporate Fool¡¦s Guide to Surviving with Grace.¡¨ So, go ahead and read it. You too can become a Corporate Fool º.
Ignore How It Looks.......2007-03-15
This book sat on my shelf for five years before I ran out of things to read and picked it up. Had I know then what I know now, I would have dropped everything and read it then and there. Mr. Mackenzie encourages individual thinking and creative looks at how things can be in a corporate culture, where dollars and cents are more important than pressing forward and being truly innovative. There is not a business where this sort of creativity cannot be applied.

Great Children's Book.......2007-07-30
I grew up reading this book. I loved it so much that I had to buy a new copy for myself. Such a great book to get a friend who is expecting.
Great book!.......2007-05-22
This was a favorite book of both mine and my brothers when we were younger. I recently purchased it for my brother's baby due in June and decided to purchase it for my baby also!!
Wonderful compilation!.......2007-05-14
My little 2 year old son loves this book. Not quite as much as "Cars, Trucks & Things that Go", but he still thorougly enjoys it--mostly asks for the pages with cars (I'm sure he'll enjoy more of the stories as he grows older). This is definitely one for you children's library!
favorite book of childhood.......2007-04-25
I had three copies of this book as a little girl, and my own child has loved through two copies in three years. It is my standard baby gift and opens up a child's world to nature, art, color, animals, and other cultures (so that's why I love all things france! It's all pierre the paris detective's fault!). A wonderful childhood classic.
The Best!.......2007-04-23
This was my daughter's favorite book. I'm so glad that I was able to remember the author's name. My baby is now 30 and expecting her first child. I can hardly wait to read these stories to my grandchild. I can still remember my daughter's baby voice calling the detective Coucous. It's pure joy to read to a child, and the memories last a lifetime. I'm misting up just writing this.

Book Description
How maverick companies have passed up revenue growthand focused on greatness instead
Most books about successful businesses focus on public companies, where the definition for success is steady growth in revenue and profits. Yet there are many excellent, privately held companies marching to the beat of a different drum; they have stricken revenue and profit growth from the top of their mission statements. Instead, they define themselves by their passion for their products and their commitment to their employees, customers, and communityembracing a clarity and loyalty to purpose that's an anomaly in today's environment.
Small Giants is a fascinating book about the unconventional people who run these purpose-driven companies. Longtime Inc. magazine editor Bo Burlingham takes us deep inside these companies to determine the secret ingredient, the elusive mojo that makes them great.
He profiles fourteen of the best, including Anchor Brewing, CitiStorage, Clif Bar Inc., Righteous Babe Records, Reel Precision Manufacturing, and Zingerman's Community of Businesses. These companies are consistently profitable yet have consciously resisted convention by staying small and great instead of becoming large and mediocre.
For anyone who wants to explore America's most innovative and inspiring small business successes, this unique book is the place to start.
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational...a GREAT read........2007-10-10
Bo Burlingham has his hand on the pulse of what makes companies great. His writing is terrific, his story telling superb, the book an inspiration for anyone who is a business owner...a great "sherpa" for any large organization.
Small Giants.......2007-09-21
I highly recommend this book to the business owner that wants a vision for his company. It doesn't have to be all about profits. They will come when you take care and build a relationship with your employees, customers, suppliers, and your community.
Decent Examination of the Small-Scale, but Lacks Figures & Facts.......2007-09-09
After reading Jim Collin's seminal work Good to Great, I became enamored with the idea of "scope" as it pertains to business success. I recalled hearing about Gore, the company, and how they do not allow any one of their offices to grow beyond 250 people - setting 250 as the magic number, above which intimacy, norms of reciprocity and mutual assistance are not possible. I started to crave a book that might address those very ideas from a Collins-esque standpoint. After some search, I found a book that Jim Collins had reviewed: "This well-written book should inspire thousands of entrepreneurs to reject a mantra of growth for growth's sake in favor of a passionate dedication to becoming the absolute best. Bo Burlingham reminds us of a vital truth: big does not equal great, and great does not equal big."
That was enough of an endorsement for me, and I dove right into reading. I came away somewhat disappointed by the less-than-rigorous methodology, but also energized by the ideas presented. Burlingham does not use the same exactitude in selecting the companies he features (largely because the financial reports are not public for the private groups he chose to focus on). Thus, it is difficult to appreciate his findings in the same way as I can appreciate Collins'.
However, Burlingham writes like the capable and clever journalist that he is (editor at Inc. magazine) and the pages turn easily. His chapters are divided as logically as possible, given the lack of concrete data. Much of what he presents is based off feeling, interviews, observation, and contemplative conclusions. He does not hesitate to label the success of these businesses as "mysterious" - following from "mojo" or (my preference) "spiritual terroir."
Read this book if you want to read some incredibly articulate leaders talking about their perspective on business. It is one of the best compilations of leader interviews I have read. The book groups the commentary together when appropriate, or allows one leader to dictate the chapter content entirely. Either way, Burlingham does a marvelous job of letting these men and women speak for themselves and their hard-won success. It is refreshing. The owner and CEO of Anchor Brewing, Fritz Maytag, is downright moving in his eloquence. Jay Goltz, head of Artists' Frame Service is brazenly pragmatic, but uses stories to speak to the underlying support of this leadership approach (managing is "also about learning how not to demotivate [your people]").
Do not read this book if you are looking for applicable solutions or step-by-step recommendations.
breath of fresh air.......2007-07-02
An intelligent analysis of successful small businesses. Comprehensive stories of small business done right. Inspires you to start your own company!
Great Thought-Provoking Book.......2007-06-27
I work for a small company that wants to be great. After reading the book I feel good about what we are doing and challenged to do better in some areas. If you are looking for a "how to be great" book, this is probably not the book for you. If you looking for a book to provoke some deep thought about the relationship between size and greatness, then I highly recommend this book.
