A fun read-aloud........2007-10-07
Patricia Polacco's GINGER AND PETUNIA tells of elegant lady Ginger, an accomplished pianist and socially active whose passion is her pampered pet pig Petunia. When Petunia is left on her own, she decides to pose as Ginger - and body even notices This lively, fun animal story requires good reading skills or adult assistance but also makes a fun read-aloud.
Ginger and Petunia.......2007-09-26
I loved this book! I do a Patricia Polacco author study in my third grade classroom. She has written many books with lasting messages. This one is just plain fun! My students and I always try to figure out which parts of Ms. Polacco's books are really true. In this one, her dear friend, Virginia Vincent Folsum (Ginger), and her pet pig, Petunia, are it. The rest is pure fantasy and a delightful read. You will not stop smiling as Petunia misses her beloved mud baths trying to get through Ginger's busy schedule while she is away. Enjoy!
What a delightful surprise.......2007-09-11
I stumbled on this book at my local library while I was killing some time before a business meeting. It was a featured book there. Both the story and the pictures are fantastic. It's about a rich socialite woman, Ginger, who leaves her adored pet pig, Petunia, with a pet sitter who never shows. Through a series of events, the pig takes over Ginger's social obligations and fools everyone to thinking she IS Ginger. Further the pig makes mistakes at the events but the mistakes end up working out for the best and the pig, aka, Ginger, becomes more and more celebrated. The ending really delivers with a hilarious dip into a chocolate fountain (thought to be a mud bath by the pig) at an important party. Everyone at the party joins in. This is going to be "the" book I give for gifts this year. It's a real hoot - or should I say oink?!?

Book Description
A beautifully designed, full-color photo-essay celebrating the intimate bond between some noted equestrians and the horses they own, ride, train-and love!Leading man Richard Gere fell for a girl on horseback. For actress Alfre Woodard and her daughter Mavis, the connection with horses is spiritual. Chevy Chase says his Icelandics "get very hairy during the winter, but then so do I." And Robert Redford, recalling his month-long ride down the old Outlaw Trail that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid rode, says: "What I marvel at is how wild and free this land still can seem from the back of a horse." In People We Know, Horses They Love, we meet nearly thirty celebrity horse lovers, from Whoopi Goldberg and Christie Brinkley to the original horse whisperer, Buck Brannaman and bestselling author Tami Hoag, who's also an amateur international champion dressage rider. Gorgeous, full-color, never-seen-before photographs capture the majesty and grace of the animals, the beauty of the ranches and stables where they reside and intimate moments shared with their owners. Whether highlighting Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward on their ranch for special needs children, exploring Hilary Duff's passion for wild mustangs, hanging with Jeff Bridges on the set of Seabiscuit, or illuminating the interior lives of Maria Shriver, Morgan Freeman, and many others, People We Know, Horses They Love pays tribute to the special relationship between human and horse. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Program.

Visually and documentary beautiful!.......2007-09-27
I have seen this book before and decided to get it for myself, so I can ponder over the different chapters, and personages at leisure. Filled with one surprise after another, the book delivers photos masterfully done, interwoven with stories of people we know that share a common bond... horses. It is a great gift for the horse lover or the person that likes to read about people in the world of celebrities. Again, I must emphasize that the pictures are truly stunning and well composed. Having been a photographer for over 40 years, I always pay more attention to the details, composures, and art-full feel of pictures, and these photos are charming and "story telling" in their own light. One picture is worth a thousand words, is very true in this book. Buy it, enjoy it, keep it and give it.

Cute book for the kids and celebrity followers.......2007-06-10
This book has some really well taken photography shots of people and their horses. It dosen't lie in its title...alas..the title is incredibly accurate...it shows a bunch of celebrity with their horses and a few with the dogs also.
Did I say the photography was wonderful?...It is.
The choice of the persons included in this book was well thought out..as she included several minority persons for which I give high marks for doing so..as minorities are very poorly represented in most equine books.
The horse crazy among us..(like Myself) will devour this book in less than 30 minutes if you read it..and even faster than that (maybe) if you just look at the pictures. Teens..young adults...minority horse lovers should jump on it...because it contains people that you have seen ..that could be you or your kids in it..and for that reason..it is excellent for the younger crowd too !!!
It isn't smart..or difficult..or magical...or knowledgable......its a good look at American Celebritys the horses they own..and how they got connected to them.
Not Enough Horse, Too Much Hype.......2005-06-24
Where should I start? With the many blurry, grainy photos? Or the photos of celebrities and horses that are hugely under exposed so the "background" can come shining through? I thought I'd get to see celebrities with their horses - in focus. Disappointing photography.
The interviews sound somewhat "canned" and "redundant". As though the celebrities were asked to fill in a form and then the interview was written from the form.
Why two stars? Page 1, Richard Gere and his horse; Page 13 Robert Duvall and horse; Page 89 Kim Novak and her horse.
People Magazine in hardcover with lots of horses.......2005-03-26
This oversize book with photographs by Linda Solomon is exactly as advertised by the title. We see photo-montages of stars like Robert Redford with his favorite horses. The text burbles on about his screen credits and career and the Sundance film festival. Robert Redford talks about his (horseless) childhood and why and how he learned to ride. The other stars that Rappaport and Wilkinson interview and photograph are Gisele Bundchen (super model from Brazil), Chevy Chase, Robert Duvall, Richard Gere (who raises Appaloosas), Melissa Gilbert and Bruce Boxleitner, Whoopi Goldberg (who currently doesn't own any horses, so was photographed with NYC's finest mounted police), Kelse and Camille Grammer, Joe and Billie Perry (Friesians), Katharine Ross and Cleo Elliott, Jane Seymour (who prefers driving to riding), Maria Shriver, Robert Wagner and Jill St. John, Jeff Bridges, Christie Brinkley, William Devane, Morgan Freeman, Kim Novak, Jack Palance, and Dennis Quaid.
The book has two other, shorter sections titled "Pro and Show" and "Healing Hands, Healing Horses." My favorite interview was with ex-jockey Julie Krone. What a gutsy, determined athelete! There are also short articles on the U. S. Equestrian Team, Dressage, and horse healer Buck Brannaman.
"People We Know, Horses They Love" is a pleasant hodge-podge. I would recommend it to star-struck teenagers who also happen to love horses.
Great book for fans of horses and movie stars.......2004-12-27
I've been a horse lover since I got my first pony at the age of six. I am also a working entertainment reporter, so I am always on the lookout to talk to celebs who have horses -- but this book taught even me a few things! Who knew Chevy Chase has Icelandics? That's my favorite breed!
People We Know, Horses They Love is not only very well-written and informative, but the pictures are beautiful too. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because that rating for horse/picture books is reserved for Robert Vavra :)

From the introduction
I originally came up with the concept for this book in December 1998. Yes, I know what you are saying, "that's a long time." I have had people tell me that they have produced and filmed motion pictures in the time I have taken to produce this book. My response, "Well, in a movie you have only to deal with two or three celebrities wandering around with their pets." I can also feel the love and see a different side of each person. So, what I wanted to do was to photograph everyone in black and white at home in a very comfortable environment. I wanted to capture the love and true bond between the person and the animal. --Christopher Ameruoso, author

Pets and Their Celebrities.......2007-07-12
Wonderful book. Since I'm an animal lover and a celebrity junkie, this was the best of both worlds. It makes a great coffee table book.
Nice book with a caveat.......2004-01-10
I purchased this book for use in a veterinary hospital waiting area. Overall it is a beautiful celebration of the human-animal bond. Unfortunately the pictorial of Robbie Williams with a leashed, lingerie-clad woman at his feet is an inappropriate addition and is degrading to women. It's hard to understand why the author chose to include it.
Very nice coffee table book - great for the animal lover.......2002-04-13
This book donates a part of their proceeds for Last Chance for Animals, which is a great reason to get it and help out at the same time. The pictures are black and white but are very well done. The photographer really shows the bond between owner and pet. There are some celebrities posing with 'borrowed' pets but the animals look to be enjoying it just the same. In looking through the book there were celebrities like Paul Stanley, Ozzy Ossbourne and Ice-T.
As a dog lover I just couldn't pass this book up. One of our kids is a rescued shelter dog so I know the joy these animals give back for being given a second chance. They are forever grateful for the new life they've been given, believe me (ours is STILL thanking us :-) ).
The True feeling..........2001-12-24
This book really is really filled with warmth. The mixer of celebrities is a real pleasure from the old to the current. The photographer has a real talent for capturing the love between these people and their pets. I have seen this book featured in many well respected magazines such as People, In Style, New York Times, Page Six (New York Post) as well as many Television shows. From reading the intro to this book by the Photographer/Author he really worked this project hard and stood for what he believed in. For a first time Author/Photographer he really nailed the subject as well as the photos. This is a must for people who enjoy animals as well as celebrities. I bought two for gifts and my friends are thrilled to own this book. I also read a great review about Christopher Ameruoso from the very well respected (Popular Photography magazine web site) not bad work Christopher good luck...
If you love animals..........2001-12-16
I have an autographed copy of this book - Chris turns out to live in my building, so I took advantage of his good nature :)
I met Stella too - a real cutie and full of character. She could make a movie or two in her own right...
If you love animals it's always interesting to see the types of animal that other people bond with, and Chris has compiled an interesting collection of photos of personalities and their pets (and in some cases, personalities with borrowed pets), along with idiosyncratic cartoons, poems and other literary gems peppered throughout the book.
The list of people featured reads like a Who's Who of showbiz, music and media excellence: Pamela Anderson, Julianna Moore, William H. Macy, Geri Haliwell, Kate Hudson, Brendan Fraser, Afton Fraser, Rosanna Arquette, Janeane Garofalo, Lisa Rinna, Rachel Hunter, Dean Cain, Bo Derek, James Caan, Angelica Bridges, Slash, Tipi Hedren, Tatjana Patitz, Natasha Henstridge, Christine Taylor, Natalie Raitano, Dustin Nguyen, Ice-T, Elizabeth Barondes, Illeana Douglas, Paulie Shore, Diane Warren, David Alan Grier, Kristen Johnston, Vincent Schiavelli, Lisa Marie, Deborah Mazar, Garcelle Beauvais, Amy Smart, Scott Baio, Gina Gershon, Sheryl Lee, Michael Des Barres, Joel West, Mariska Hargitay, Ashley Hamilton, Sara Foster, Wild Orchid, Alison Eastwood, Paul Stanley, Paula Abdul, Harv Presnell, Nicolette Sheridan, Brian Green, Joely Fisher, Connie Stevens, Jason Wiles, John Taylor, Christina Applegate, Bernie Taupin, Faith Ford, Ozzy Osbourne, Kidada Jones, Felicity Huffman, Kari Wuhrer, William Atherton, Jillian Barberie, Sally Kellerman, Harold Becker, Phil Collen, Maureen O'Boyle, Jeffrey Tambor, Sally Struthers, John Taylor, Angie Everhart, Tim Burton, DeDee Pfeiffer, Ben Stiller, Robbie Williams, Shannen Doherty, Rob Lowe, Cheri Oteri, Anthony Kiedes, Rose McGowan, Courtney Cox Arquette, David Arquette and Fred Durst.
Many of the animals featured in this book owe their existence to being rescued by their celebrity owners (and my wife and I have two rescued cats so we know something of the difficulties that such owners can face - rescued animals often have traumatic histories to contend with).
It's nice to see celebs getting involved in caring for their fellow creatures; while it may be true that actors shouldn't *work* with children or animals it doesn't mean that they can't *live* in harmony and love with them.
A portion of the author's proceeds from the sales of this book will go to Last Chance for Animals, which is also nice - buying this book is therefore a constructive way of helping out animals who might have no other chance for life.

A Coffee Table Bon-Bon.......2006-07-08
MEN & DOGS has a number of charming photos of various hounds and men of renown. But this reveals one of the problems with the book; the men are not necessarily with their OWN dogs.
In fact, the men may not be dog owners at all! For example, David Bowie is shown with an unnamed Great Dane. The dog is not Bowie's; the photo is from a publicity shoot. Bowie may in fact loathe dogs, though certainly not as much as Peter Sellers, (also pictured with a dog.) The text informs us that during a fight with his wife, Sellers "strangled her parrot and chucked one of her puppies into the swimming pool." Ulp.
And glamorous and striking photos aside, I was disappointed that there was absolutely no organization to this material. Dog breeds? All over the place. Chronological sequencing of pictures? Nope. Groupings of actors in one chapter, politicians in another, and so on? Forget it.
SIDELIGHT: Nobody loved dogs more than Humphrey Bogart. His response to neighbors complaining about his barking boxers: "What son of a bi*** doesn't like dogs? What kind of monster is he? He ought to be glad he can hear the wonderful sounds of dogs barking."

Are Women More Authentic Animal Lovers Than Men?.......2006-07-12
Having read WOMEN & DOGS' companion volume, I figured I'd give this book a spin as well. As one can readily see, it is comprised of charming photos of various hounds and women of renown.
I enjoyed this book more than its predecessor, which is rather silly, as they are identical in format and nearly identical in content. But despite the preponderance of poodles, more women seemed to be pictured with their OWN dogs here, as opposed to the men who were sometimes just in a photo shoot with a nameless hound.
Or maybe women are just more telegenic!

Book Description
Sir Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler, Alexander the Great and Charlemagne, Ernest Hemingway, Margaret Mitchell, and Mark Twainthey orated, marched, and wrote their way into history. Less publicly, they also doted on their pets. So have generals, presidents, monarchs, poets, painters, philosophers, explorers, scientists, and countless other celebrities down through the centuries. This entertaining compendium of tales, from that of a ten-year-old Alexander taming a wild black stallion to the story of a Nazi dictator's infatuation with his Alsatian, Blondi, casts the human nature of frequently formidable public figures in new light. The pets in this book's lively pages leap, shriek, squawk, crawl, curl, fly, spill, taunt, rule, and inspire. They also bite, as did Josephine's dog, Fortune, on his mistress's wedding night, evidently convinced that she was being attacked by Napoleon in her bed. More dignified, Freud's chow, Jo-Fi, for seven years faithfully attended the illustrious doctor's sessions of analysisto no recorded effect on the analysands, or the dog. Then there was the Cromwells' pet monkey, which kidnapped baby Oliver and dragged him to the rooftop of the family house. And Casanova's parrot, which raucously repeated in the streets a stream of obscenities attached to the name of his master's former amour. Or the pooch that Dorothy Parker called Woodrow Wilson. Like most of the colorful cases in this amusing volume, Parker's relationship with her pooch reveals as much about the private quirks and personal idiosyncrasies of the owner as it does the pet. Black-and-white illustrations throughout add to this engaging collection of true and often comical tales.
Customer Reviews:
A lot of talking but not with the animals........2001-12-23
The title was interesting and a grabber as I am working in animal healing/communication and wished to learn more from someone claiming they knew how to do this. I had hoped this book would assist in that process with new information. I was very disappointed as there was only minimal referrals to how to do this--only a few sentences in all. Most of the book focused on many different animals, what their human companions had done or not done and what she did, many times referring to things heard in vet school that most of the lay public would have no knowledge of--perhaps it will educate someone on these aspects, just not on the communication. This did not give a very good model on how to facilitate this process and obtain accurate results. More information really needed to be included for this to be considered a book dealing with animal communication for someone serious about including this skill in working with their animal companions. It has a good title, just no real content on the subject saddly. For the serious student there are many other books that work much better than this one.
What a disappointment.......2001-10-01
Intrigued by the title and encouraged by the rave reviews, I was not prepared for my level of disappointment with this book. It struck me that Dr. Pasten was so busy thinking of a rejoinder to everyone that I found it hard to believe she actually listened to what the animals were saying to her. Or perhaps she just related better to animals. I found her sense of humor appallingly offensive for a book of this nature. I kept waiting for her to NOT have a smart comment at the end of each story which I'm sure was meant to be humorous but was often just silly. Please, save your money.
Super.......2001-06-27
it was a really interesting book to read and is a great introduction for anyone interested in alternative animal medicine it had some good general points about communicating with animals and brought up some issues that you would have never thought of.
Absolutely Superb!.......2000-05-05
The Tarantula Whisperer brought some tears and plenty of joy and laughter to me. I got the sense that Dr. Pasten is very passionate about her veterinary work and is equally passionate about sharing the special human-animal bond with her audience. Her creative writing geniously intertwines real-life stories about her clients and personal companions and gives simple, yet interesting approaches to making your pets happy...Happiness is what it's all about, isn't it?
I'm anxiously awaiting her next book!
Great book for animal lovers.......2000-04-15
"Tarantula Whisperer" is not a book about spiders! It is a wonderfully entertaining, educational book on understanding animals, communciating with them and caring about and for them. With fun anecdotes from her vet practise, Pasten gives us unusual insights and untraditional advice. My dogs and I highly recommend it.
