Animal lovers adore Patrick McDonnell's comic strip, Mutts featuring the adventures of Earl (the dog) and Mooch (the cat) told from their unique (and often hilarious) point of view. Just Like Heaven is a poignant and powerful picture book that fans (and their kids) will appreciate. We asked Patrick to tell us a little more about himself and the book, and he surprised us by including a few comic strips to help illustrate his story. Check out his message to fans, and the artwork below. --Daphne Durham
A Special Message about Just Like Heaven
from New York Times Bestselling Author, Patrick McDonnell
I have spent the last twelve years as the creator of the newspaper comic strip Mutts. Mutts is centered on the unlikely friendship between Earl the dog and Mooch the cat. It combines my love for animals with my love for the art of the comic strip.
Becoming a daily cartoonist was something I always dreamed of doing, as was creating children's books. I love the timeless magic found in the best children's books. Like comic strips, its art is rooted in telling stories with words and pictures. Both forms have simplicity, poetry and optimism. Arts that spread joy.
I had the pleasure to do my first picture book last Fall when Little, Brown published The Gift of Nothing. It features Earl and Mooch. It was fun to tell a self-contained, complete story with characters I live with every day.
I followed The Gift of Nothing with Art, a book about a boy obsessed with making art and messes--a somewhat autobiographical love poem to the creative process.
My new book is titled Just Like Heaven. With this book I wanted to celebrate our everyday lives and the things we tend to take for granted, such as nature, birds, flowers, friends and family. It is loosely based on a two week story I once did in Mutts.
Some of the comic strips from that story are included here. While Mooch takes a nap under a tree, a deep fog quietly rolls in. Awakening in a cloud of mist, Mooch concludes that he must be in heaven. With his cat curiosity, he proceeds to explore his surroundings and sees the familiar in a whole new light:

MUTTS comics is the best ever ..........2007-04-05
I'm sure I sound like a broken record, but Patrick McDonnell is the next Charles Schulz. Mooch and Earl and the rest of the gang never fail to give an endearing, cheerful, often funny view of the tender issues that face our furry friends as well as the world at large. I have converted many, many folks into Mutts fans - and I give this particular book "Just Like Heaven" to every child I know. Birthdays, Easter, Christmas, and for no occasion at all other than I love them, and I love Mutts.
Hug Time!.......2007-03-23
As a children's librarian, I am always on the lookout for new books that will get kids involved. This one is such a book!
As I read it to a rowdy bunch of 1st graders, you could almost feel the "quiet" enter the room as they looked and listened to what heaven may really be like. By the time we got to "hug time" they were so enthralled that with just a little bit of direction, we had a huge group hug and laugh together.
As I read it later to 4th graders, they were more interested in talking about their own ideas of heaven and perfect days, but they agreed that sometimes it is nice to just take a nap and wake up wanting to hug someone.
This would be a wonderful book to just have around to remind yourself that heaven is not made up of possessions, but of people (and animals).
"Stop and smell the flowers.....".......2007-03-09
Short, sweet, and to the point. I read it to my two daughters and the story makes you stop, thank God for what you have and take in the moment.
Must Love Dogs.......2007-01-10
I loved this book...I also have the "Gift Of Nothing" and the rest of the Mutts comic strip books. What can I say, I'm a HUGE Patrick McDonnell fan. This book was cute, simple, and easy to understand. It wasn't as good as The Gift of Nothing, but if you are a MUTTS fan, it will not disappoint. However, the lesson in this book may be a bit advanced for very young ones....I would suggest it for 7+. I however, bought it strictly for my enjoyment/collection and I'm well over 7.
Soft as kitten toes and puppy kisses.......2006-10-12
Patrick McDonnell has done it again! Just Like Heaven reaches into your soul and tugs at your heartstrings with a message as soft as kitten toes and puppy kisses. Most people these days are in a fog by being too plugged in to marvel at the beauty and goodness that surrounds them. This sweet, simple masterpiece will help teach our children and feed our inner children. Giving the gift of Mutts has become a family tradition that I will continue for years to come.
Book Description
Often misunderstood and sometimes misjudged, cats remain the most mysterious of our domesticated companions. Yet with a little patience and a lot of love, cats will enter your hearts on soft paws and remain there with an infinite amount of devotion. Author Karen Anderson explores some of the mistakes cat owners may unknowingly make while raising their feline friends. She also tells how to correct undesirable behaviors while at the same time forging a bond of trust and affection that will remain throughout your lives together. In an original format, the text is segmented into vignettes of behavioral descriptions and methods for interacting more rewardingly with your cat, each with an accompanying photograph. Page after page of insightful text and colorful photographs capture these wonderful animals in both their daily routines and frisky, playful behaviors - in short, doing what makes a cat a cat. A must-read for cat lovers everywhere, this book will change the way you look at our furry friends.
Customer Reviews:
Love this book - title should be changed however!!.......2006-11-13
There are two things wrong with this fine book: it's hardcover and thus, may come across as merely a 'coffee table book' with less text value. Not true! Secondly, the title perhaps suggests a book that is all 'sing song' and full of mushy cat ramblings. Completely false! 'Cats Have No Masters...Just Friends' should be titled something like, 'How to Have an AWESOME Relationship with your Cat.' There is no possible way that one could read this book and not substantially (if not radically) improve life with a cat. So much is covered in this book that is truly original - from Ms. Anderson's section on the (often overlooked) differences between cats and dogs, to dispelling cat myths, to the very detailed, practical, fun chapters on exactly how to treat your cat to bring out the best in feline-human friendship, this well-written book is an absolute MUST HAVE for any person with a cat. First time cat owners should read this book before getting a cat. Long time cat owners will smile and learn from the wisdom and humor on these pages. By the way, there are wonderful color photographs on each page, perfectly illustrating the lively text. This book is a gem. Treat yourself, treat a friend, don't miss this one!!
insightful & helpful...MORE than just a coffee table book!.......2001-05-24
Don't let the price scare you away, it's worth every penny. There's a wealth of tools and secrets for a super-rewarding relationship with your cat(s). Two thumbs 'way up' for this work by Karen Anderson. purr purr purr
PURRRFECT GIFT FOR A CAT LOVER.......2000-06-27
Purrfect cat coffee table book. One purrecious cat basking in the sun after another, another at play, another at hunt
...it would make a great wonderful gift with beautiful cat pictures in majestic scenic backgrounds and great useful verses on how to treat a cat and how a cat treats you."
..take it from me, my friend's cat passed away and so i gifted her with the book and she felt 1000 TIMES BETTER! she's thinking of now getting another cat!
The Real "Cat".......2000-06-24
I picked this book up at the bookstore to read while I waited for my husband. If you have ever had a "cat friend" this is excellent. Karen Anderson catches the true thoughts and feelings of cats and their human friends. I will now buy this book to keep in my library to enjoy again and again. It is a book for those who truly love and know "the cat".
GREAT GIFT FOR A CAT LOVER FRIEND! 5 STARS!.......2000-06-20

Book Description
A new cartoon collection from nationally syndicated "Sylvia" cartoonist Nicole Hollander, featuring inscrutable felines of impeccable taste. Cats who think too much, cats who plot dastardly deeds but get distracted, cats who hypnotize their owners, cats obsessed with food, food, food. A veritable kitty feast!
Customer Reviews:
More fun some repetition.......2004-07-06
Nicole Hollander's grasp of cat-human relations (you'll note which comes first) is pure genius, and in this second collection she was again delivers some of the most side-splitting bits of prose I've ever come across. Of course, to be fair, I do suppose you have to be something of a cat lover (or at least, live with cats) to understand her wit and humor -- in other words, the concept of two cats holding their owner's 1040 hostage for food might be lost on the uninitiated.
The only negative thing I will say is that this particular volume, "My Cat's Not Fat, He's Just Big Boned", contains some of the same material as her earlier "Everything Here Is Mine", which is the only reason I gave it four stars and not five.
Here's how your cat really thinks..........2004-03-07
Nicole Hollander's Sylvia comic strip is one of the most overlooked (and most hilarious) strips out there. She has many colections out there ("My weight is always perfect for my height--which varies" "You can't take it with you so eat it now" "That woman must be on drugs" etc). She is the Anti-Cathy. She is sarcastic and wacky...dry and droll...and literate and witty. Best of all she has many cat themed collections which are a hoot. THIS one is probably the best. So if you are on the look out for a laugh or if you are a cat person who wonders what is going on inside the walnut-sized brain of your favorite fur-person, the Sylvia collections (especially this one) are just the ticket!
Extremely funny book.......2000-06-19
Anyone who enjoys Nicole Hollander's sly and amusing view of the world will like this book; anyone with a particular fondness for cats probably will, too. If you have ever tried to imagine your cat's motives for doing the things they do, you will enjoy Sylvia's cats, whose motives are hilarious. Many of the jokes are probably above the heads of children, but even they will enjoy the antics the cats get up to.
It's as great -- and even better -- than her previous books.......1999-07-22
I bought this book from Amazon.com about two months ago and, as an admitted cat lover, am still loving this book dedicated to cats (and a small section to dogs). It's on my desk to my right and whenever I need a laugh, I just open up to any one of the pages. Thanks, Nicole!
If you think really hard.... you might get one of the jokes!.......1999-05-08
I saw the cover of this book, and thought it would be a funny addition. I coulden't wait to get it, and laugh my socks off. Once again.. Don't judge a book by it's cover. She has a few funny art clips, but nothing great. I found the book to be more of a put down, than funny. The book is black an white. Not color like the cover. It has 111 pages, and maybe a little cute art. Not a book I would recommend. Why bother wasting your time?

Your Cat's Just Not That Into You is utterly loopy and yet dead-on wise—this is, after all, from the author of the classic

Customer Reviews:
Your Cat;'s Just Not That into you:"What part of Meow Don't Your Understand.......2007-08-22
I thought this book was hilarious and I love cats. It was meant to be a humorous parody of the human to human relationship books out there. It does stereotype cat behaviours, similar to the self help-relationship books that stereotype gender behaviors. That was the spirit in which it was intended since many of us view our relationship with our pets, similar to our other human relationships.
I think the reviewers that gave this a low rating need to lighten up.
Awful.......2006-08-05
I thought I was buying a book that would give me insight into my cat's world. What I got was a joke book and the punchline is always "Your cats just not that into you." Ok, I get it. I guess I'll take the author's advice and take her to the spa, and drop this book off in a donation bin along the way.
humorous but redundant.......2006-02-25
This book is written from the point of view of someone who doesn't like cats. It's amusing but not laugh-out-loud funny.
Very Funny - Easy to Read - Many Laughs.......2005-09-23
My cat wrote this review. He says, "What I like most about books is that, if you lay on one, people tend to stop reading and pet you. I plopped down on top of this one and it felt pretty comfortable. Sure enough, my pet human stopped and gave me a great massage. She says the book explains why we cats can be aloof and disdainful. It has many "Dear Abby" type letters, classified ads, advice and definitions.
One classified ad read, "If you're submissive, read on. Upbeat, Rubenesque Maine Coon seeks good home with endlessly giving, insecure owner who'll try to please me even when I'm having a hissy fit. The right owner will never assume he's doing too much for his pet, or experience moral outrage if I "get lucky" with a gopher. Let's have lunch and talk."
This book also offers a peek into a cat's mind and offers other advice that our humans ought to know. Hey, my human is still laughing over it -- so it must be good. Besides, I like to see my pets amused. You might want to educate your pet humans with this book, too."
Customer Reviews:
Not as described.......2007-09-22
The title is misleading. The description of this book was sadly lacking in information. There really wasn't any direction on how to train a small breed, adult dog. I sent it back. It may have done a splendid job helpiing train pups, but there was hardly any mention of how to go about retraining an adult. I needed to look at the book before buying it, but was unable to find it in a local bookstore. The current discription needs to be updated to reflect what information is covered.
Pretty Good Ideas.......2007-04-20
I thought the price was a little high, but the book is not bad. My Bichon is partially litter trained. I'm still working on it. I did notice a few spelling and grammatical errors. I can overlook that because the method is pretty good.
What a Great Book and It Works!!.......2007-02-07
I'm not too sure what the previous comments are talking about, but I purchased this book to train my 3yr old Yorkie and thought it was great! My yorky has been trained to go outside and do to the recent cold weather I decided to try litter box training. There is some information on the web, but this is the only book I could find that went into greater detail. I found it went into much more detail, especially on problem solving. It also explained the process much better than any websites had. My yorkie was used to going outside so it took about a month to re-train her to use the litter box, but it was well worth it. I really recomend this book to anyone curious or interested in Litter Box training their small dog!
Don't waste your money.......2007-01-17
This book is too vague; not enough detail. I knew most of what she wrote about just by using common sense;I was hoping for more information. Don't waste your money. Her method does not work as quickly as she states in the book either.
Not impressed........2006-10-16
I researched this subject online and bought the book, hoping it would provide more information. It does not. Instructions are along the lines of, "you may want to buy a bigger litter box.. but you may not...", with not much explanation. The grammar is poor, there were typos, and the book is obviously cheaply made.
There is no more information in the book than you could easily find searching online for 5 minutes. This book is not worth purchasing.

Dad plays the fiddle, Mom sings country-western, and Austin bangs the tambourine. They call themselves The Swamp Snakes. Every day they perform for a different audience. Every week they travel to a different town. But every night in their trailer, it's exactly the same: Austin gets one bedtime story, only one, even though he always begs his father for another. How Austin finally gets his second story--and then many, many more--makes for a crowd-pleasing picture book, with illustrations that kick up their own special cheer.

Warm, Witty, and Fun............2002-10-21
"Austin and his family were on the road. They called themselves The Swamp Snakes. Dad played the fiddle, Mom sang country-western, and Austin banged the tambourine. Every day was a different crowd. Every week was a different town. But every night in their trailer was exactly the same..." Austin had a drink of water from his dinosaur mug, lined his stuffed animals up at the end of the bed, snuggled down under his favorite quilt, and called out "story time." Dad always told him his bedtime story. "Just one more story?" Austin always begged. "You know the rules, cowboy," Dad said. "Just one story at bedtime." It was always the same, night after night until The Swamp Snakes got to Tuscaloosa. That night, instead of sleeping in their trailer, they stayed with Uncle Roy in his "two story" house. Austin didn't like the scratchy blankets or the unfamiliar bed, and he didn't like having to drink his water from a paper cup instead of his dinosaur mug, but he sure did like the idea of two stories..... Jennifer Brutschy's gentle, heartwarming story with its clever and humorous, surprise ending, just begs to be shared and read aloud. Her witty text, rich in engaging backwoods words and phrases, is complemented by Cat Bowman Smith's cheerful watercolor illustrations, filled with bold color, expressive details, energy and motion. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Just One More Story is an cozy, comforting, and entertaining bedtime read that's sure to become an instant favorite at your house.

Book Description
From the tremendously successful "Just Pets" series, abridged and condensed to an appealing 7 x 5 5/8 inch format. The books in our "Half Pint" series have all the charm and appeal of their bigger cousins. 96 pages and 100 color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Great coffee table book.......2002-06-18
The pictures are the main attraction of the book, but Karen Anderson's commentary throughout is entertaining and embodies the cat lover's feelings about felines. And the arrangement of the pictures into the categories of kittens, country cats, suburban cats, and city cats is noteworthy.
This is a book for cat lovers to look through leisurely, enjoy the pictures...the commentary is well spaced and rather like words from a friend who's also a cat lover. And of course, this sure would be a welcome gift to a cat lover.
Kitten sized..........2001-08-12
I was surprised when I received this book due to its small size. I guess I just kind of skimmed over all the flags of the "Half pint" book series etc. I had just seen the full size book at...and found this one under the same name and at a good price. I find that the price is due to its small reprinted size, the book is less than 1/2 the size of the original....
This still has some nice pictures of cats and kittens doing what cats and kittens do but get your magnifying glass out for the detail.
a real find!.......1999-06-23
As "cat people" we are intrigued by the many-faceted feline, both "in the fur" and in pictures, so this photographic essay with contributions from thirty-six photographers celebrating the special world and style of the cat is a real find. The full color photographs are magnificent and the text by Karen Anderson, author of 'Cats Have No Masters...Just Friends', with her warm and often witty observations on the situations and attitudes of cats make this book a treasure among photographic treatises.
The "short journey from kittenhood . . . to cat" is beautifully portrayed in both the chapter on the antics of kittens and one entitled "Portraits" which concentrates on the face of the cat with emphasis on their many expressions and their hypnotic eyes. Three other sections allow us to see and enjoy the cat in various situations: "Country Cats/Land of Opportunity," "Suburban Cats/Best of Both Worlds," and "City Cats/The Prince and the Pauper."
