3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-11

I was so excited to see another title in the McDuff series, a beloved set of books in our house. Unfortunately, Rosemary Wells has not stayed with her original illustrator. One look at the pictures and I didn't even want to buy this book. It's too bad. We'll stick with the 2 sets of the rest of the McDuff books.

4 out of 5 stars Great New Adventure.......2007-02-15

We own and love all of our McDuff books. Our only disappointment with this new book is that we miss the old McDuff. He is updated and doesn't look the same as the McDuff in the earlier editions. My children noticed right away and they prefer the original McDuff. None the less we still enjoyed the new adventure with the New McDuff.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for my 4 and 7 year old.......2007-01-19

Illustrations live up to other McDuff books.. as does the story. We have a cat, so the description of the cat and dog made both my boys laugh. I hope she writes more!

5 out of 5 stars McDuff books.......2006-03-09

I have collected each book as it was published. I love the stories, and especially the illustrations, which seem to be done with real Westies as models because the expressions and body positions are so true to life.

3 out of 5 stars McDuff's Wild Romp.......2005-10-02

A little disappointed, as I don't think it's of the same quality as the other McDuff books. Still fun read for kids, however!

Book Description

The "Boomer Generation," long in the forefront of change, is looking for new models to reflect its attitudes about age. With Wise Talk, Wild Women, Gwen Mazer presents life stories of women who reflect a shift in ideas, beliefs, and feelings about age for the twenty-first century. Whether "sixty is the new forty" may be debatable, but there is no doubt that women now achieving the age of sixty and beyond are experiencing age differently than did their mothers and other women in previous generations.

This series of intimate conversations about life, love, and lessons learned takes place with women of diverse ethnicity and background. They include poet Nikki Giovanni, activist Dolores Huerta, teacher Jean Houston, and philanthropists, doctors, artists, and others who have created meaningful lives and are making a difference in the world. Through their frank accounts and the stunning portraits of Christine Alicino, we glimpse a world of possibility for continual growth that is empowering and exciting. It invites us to celebrate a stage of life rich with the grace and wisdom accumulated over a lifetime.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good concept, presentation and scope...........2007-09-05

I recently met Gwen Mazer at a book signing and was impressed with her work. It was a fascinating event mostly attended by women with many women over 60 and one very charismatic woman who was 99 and still going strong. I think this latter woman exemplifies the spirit this book is written as does the author.

The concept of the book is simple, it looks at different women's perspectives on aging, life, love, etc. The author uses a very personal style with rich, thick descriptions and quotations to bring to life a very inside or subjective perspective on these issues. The individual chapters also cover a broad range of cultures, levels of achievement, fields of expertise, etc.

I agree with Gwen that in many ways 60 is the new 40 for many people and attitudes towards aging across society are outdated. In fact, my understanding from the research on the aging brain is that how you expect to grow old is the number one determing factor in how the brain ages. If the 99 year old at the book signing event is any indication of human potential, then I think this may just right on target.

What you will come away from after reading this book is a different attitude towards aging and what is possible. It not only looks at individuals, but when taken as a collection presents a new cultural pattern emerging among women. As a man, I see this in my practice and I believe it is gathering momentum. I find it a litarlly a disgrace how many seniors are treated in our society. I also understand this is correlated with life expectancy and how people age.

If you are interested in references written for laypersons on the topic of brain aging try these: Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World's Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples and Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to Your Well-Being,Making a Good Brain Great: The Amen Clinic Program for Achieving and Sustaining Optimal Mental Performance and The Mature Mind: The Positive Power of the Aging Brain and Aging With Grace: What the Nun Study Teaches Us About Leading Longer, Healthier, and More Meaningful Lives.

Finally, this book is a work of art. There is excellent photography which captures the spirit of the person in each chapter, it's printed on good quality paper and the design is carefully thought out. If you are at all interested in this area, I recommend this book for it's "real life" and "in the bones" approach. Many similar books do not have the lively spirit of this one, the breadth or the depth.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!.......2007-08-21

Wise Talk, Wild Women changed my life and was exactly what I needed to help me move forward into the next phase of my being. At age 60 I found myself completely stuck. My mother's life was so totally different from mine and I had few female relatives whose wisdom about this stage of life I could draw upon. Wise Talk, Wild Women is extremely well written and the comments by all of the women are focused on exactly the aspects of life for which I needed insight. Although all of the women are quite different from one another, each story had several components that I could relate to and one or two paralleled my life so closely it was almost eerie. It is hard to say what was most significant but it occurred to me as I read the book that I had completely lost sight of my own accomplishments. Reading about these women's lives helped me get back in touch with what I have done thus far and how I will use that to focus on the future. I also felt a strong kinship with these women because all have either dedicated their lives to or are now focused on the greater good, something that I have done and continue to do. Wise Talk, Wild Women was truly inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Looking Forward to Sixty and Beyond.......2007-07-05

This book is elegant. The writing is both graceful and inspirational. As someone who is not yet sixty, it makes me feel as if this is a period of my life I can look forward to. Each woman profiled in this book has lead an exceptionally fulfilling life, because she relied on her intuition to guide her rather than conforming to her family's or society's expectations of her. The photographs in this book have the quality of portraits; they seem to capture the essence of each woman's character. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful journey with wise and wild women.......2007-06-20

This book is a beautifully presented gift of spirit. Mothers, daughters, grandmothers, granddaughters as well as the men in their lives will be inspired by the in-depth conversations that give candid insights into the joy, vision, and gifts of women throughout their path and arrival into maturity. Mazer's commentaries interwoven in each story give us an important additional perspective, and Alicino's photographs are alive with radiance and wisdom. Here is a celebration of life you will want to share with everyone on your list.

5 out of 5 stars Wise, Wild, Wonderful Book.......2007-06-11

Read this book;savor like a box of chocolates, enjoying it a piece at a time, for these are well-lived lives recounted by intelligent women who are also beautifully photographed. If you are a guest this summer, this would be a thoughtful gift to your host or hostess.

Book Description

Irresistible to the very young, these delightful new novelty books feature young children's favorite animals with different tactile patches to feel and explore. Simple text and bright pictures provide talking points for parent and child. These sturdy books are perfect for little hands to hold and feel, over and over again.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great pictures...........2007-05-13

This book has great pictures of animals. The little one loves it. I do wonder why some of the previous reviews talked about different textures on the pages that the child can touch. The copy I got was just a plain old board book. It is still great and the munchkin loves it. I'm just wondering if there are more than one book with a similar name and someone got their reviews mixed up or if I ended up getting something else than what I clicked on. No big deal, just something I noticed.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite baby gift........2005-01-13

I just love ALL the books in this series. My children just loved them when they were little, and if you've ever had babies you know how valuable a good book is -- you get to sit down for a while! They were fun for me to read and really fun for them to explore. In fact, I've already packed them away in their hope chests for when they grow up and have children.
Now, whenver I know anyone who has had a baby, these books (as many as I can find) are my gift.
Julie Clark Robinson, author of Live in the Moment

5 out of 5 stars Hopefully the lion won't got bald from all of the touching.........2003-04-01

My 4-month-old loves this book. She expecially loves the lion's long fur. She grabs it and will hold on for a long time. Needless to say, we spend most of our time on the lion page! But the other animals are neat too; a bumpy lizard, a smooth dolphin, a frog with sticky pads on its fingers, etc. This is a nice book to share with your child.

5 out of 5 stars My son loves this book!.......2002-12-13

This book has the greatest variety of different touch sensations that I have seen anywhere. My 2 year old son received this for Christmas last year and it has been his favorite. The sticky tree frog was the best page for him. It did lose the stickiness quickly, but I found an adhesive at a craft store that was specifically for tackiness. I just put it on the spots whenever they wear out and then we have weeks of fun again.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos and unique textures.......2001-07-03

All of the DK (publisher) books have gorgeous photographs, and this one is no exception. The photos are sharp and bright and the animals are highlighted against a white background, which makes them look like they are about to jump off the page. The textures in this book are really unique too. So many of the touch and feel books have all the same textures (fur, sandpaper, etc). This book has really unique and interesting textures (e.g. a cool, rubbery, soft, smooth surface for the dolphin - it really feels like the skin of sea mammals I have touched; and a bumpy shiny surface for the lizard skin). My 14 month old daughter really enjoys feeling all the different textures and "reading" this book to herself. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BED-TIME STORY - A WELL DONE LITTLE BOOK........2007-09-15

Piglet has lost her mom and starts her search. This is a wonderful little bed-time or read along story for the little ones. The art work by Stephen King is great and the text by Margaret Wild is easy to follow. Piglet, in her quest for her "lost" mom encounters various barnyard critters such as a duck, dog, horse, can and several others. All these friendly animals try to make piglet feel better in offering her different activities such as the horse who asks her to dance in the daffodils. Piglet of course just wants her mom. The story is cute, kids seem to like it and it is fun to read to the little ones. With the well done pictures, great text and nice story, what more could you want. Recommend this one highly.

5 out of 5 stars precious story about how there's no one like Mama.......2007-04-26

While you shouldn't be tricked into buying a book by the cover, this one did for me! The illustration on the front of the two cute pigs was just too adorable to pass up. The story is about a Piglet looking for her Mama and while she finds other animal Mamas on her search, they just aren't HER Mama. Heartwarming bedtime tale.

This book is so adorable and is a must if you have a little one that just LOVES their Mama so much.

5 out of 5 stars Adorable story.......2006-03-07

This book is about a little piglet that has lost his mother. He goes around looking for her, encountering other animals along the way that invite the piglet to join them in some sort of activity. The piglet only wants her mama. When she finds her mama, they enjoy all of the activities together ending up taking a nap snuggled up together. This is an adorable book to read with your child. My 20 month old daughter, snuggles up beside me before bed while I read it to her.

Book Description

“Laughing wild amid severest woe” perfectly describes the fiercely ironic comedy of Christopher Durang’s Laughing Wild (which takes its title from this Thomas Gray quotation via Samuel Beckett) and the previously unpublished Baby with the Bathwater. In Laughing Wild, two comic monologues evolve into a man and a woman’s shared nightmare of modern life and the isolation it creates. From her turf battles at the supermarket to the desperate clichés of self-affirmation he learns at his “personality workshop,” they run the gamut of everyday life’s small brutalizations until they meet, with disastrous inevitability, at the Harmonic Convergence in Central Park.

5 out of 5 stars "I want Dr. Ruth and Mother Theresa to fight to the death in the Coliseum.".......2006-02-16

Always fiercely satiric, Christopher Durang fills his plays with outrage and absurdity, creating moods that vary from anger to sadness and from hilarity to the darkest, most mordant humor, sometimes within the same play. In these two plays from the 1980s, Laughing Wild (1988) and Baby with the Bathwater (1984), both said to be semi-autobiographical, Durang features a young man who speaks to the audience directly, instead of appearing in dramatic, interactive scenes with other characters, as in Sister Mary Ignatius Explains it All (1979) and in The Marriage of Bette and Boo (1985).

Laughing Wild opens with a monologue by "Woman," recently released from an institution, someone who has had a tantrum because she could not reach the tuna fish in a supermarket--a man was blocking her way. With her raucous laugh, she tells us, among other things, that she has also had an altercation with a taxi driver, has fallen in the gutter, and has not read Bleak House. Act II features a monologue by Man, a writer (played in New York by the author himself), who has recently had a confrontation with a woman in the tuna fish aisle.

As he tells about his own life and problems, his bisexuality, and the Catholic church's attitudes and pronouncements, we see him recognizing life's common absurdities. In Act III, Man and Woman reveal their identical dreams and hopes in parallel monologues. Sad, but hilariously satiric of eighties attitudes and self-help movements, Laughing Wild ultimately shows the loneliness of contemporary 1980s life.

Baby With the Bathwater begins as a farce about parenthood by two people who do not have a clue. Their little boy, named Daisy, wears dresses as a child and is unsuccessful in forming any life plans, with Durang satirizing the writer-mother, the unemployed father who crouches beside the refrigerator, and their self-absorption. Daisy is on his own in figuring out who he is and who he may become, speaking to the audience directly at the end of the play.

Over-the-top exaggerations of real life attitudes and events, farce-like humor, and biting satire make Durang's plays memorable and disquieting events, and these two plays, less famous than his Obie-award winners (Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All, and Marriage of Bette and Boo) show his more personal, less interactive style of playwriting with its smaller, more intimate focus.

"Afterwords" for both plays provide Durang's comments on these productions. Particularly fascinating is his evaluation of the New York theater scene and his belief that "His Pontiff Rich" (NYTimes drama critic Frank Rich) has absolute power. n Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Two Good Plays.......2002-09-24

I would recommend this play for anyone who likes Christopher Durang. Both plays are good for any project that you would need a comedic play and/or playwrite. A must have for any drama or modern studies student.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Student Presentations.......2001-05-23

These 2 plays are full of excellent monologues and/or scenes that work well for acting presentations. They are full of modern humor.

4 out of 5 stars Through a Bath Darkly.......2001-02-21

Laughing Wild is an extraordinary journey of two people into the thinly crusted underworld of anguish and madness both they - and many of us - are struggling to keep at bay. The catalyst - an aisle in a supermarket - the weapon at hand: a tin of tuna. People negotiating with themselves, and others in a user-unfriendly environment, the overpopulated Metropolis, where normality, or at least the semblance of such, is paramount. What both characters remind us, hopefully, is the absurdity of modern life and the bravery of those social lepers who are "out there" - willing and able to access their feelings, no matter how socially unacceptable. We laugh at "the lunatic woman" - but we also envy her and wish we had the courage to voice those things we only think. The borders of what I think of as sane and loony became very blurred in this play. Thank you, Mr Durang, for that.

4 out of 5 stars durang's most real play..........2000-10-22

LAUGING WILDE is the best play by Durang that I've read or seen. I usually find his plays sort of sad, with terrible bitterness at the heart of them, that, even though they're usually terribly funny, you sort of leave feeling bad that Durang is so unhappy. I've appeared as George in ACTORTS NIGHTMARE more than once, and, like most of his plays, they have these great lead ups to sort of really sad endings.

LAUGING... on the other hand gives us two characters (two very eighties characters, based on their references to Reagan and the Meese Commition) who's feelings, though in a dated context, are so relevent now to how so many people feel about the world.

The Woman's monolgue at the beginning is so wonderfully crazy and hysterical and sort of touching - this is a great peice for a great actress who understands levels and life - its so perfectly written. The Man's monologue is just so touchingly written, without being sappy, that it makes you really sit there and say - "yes! this is what I feel, too!"... at least I do.

And bringing them together in the second act is so well done - and by the end... well, what do you know, Durang gives us an ending that has hope. No bitterness. Hope. I love it.

Not the best play I've ever read, but really well done.

BABY... has one of the funniest first acts of any play I know, but sort of winds up with that bitter Durang ending that always makes me feel bad for him.

Despite this, he's one of the best absurdist playwrights today, its no wonder his plays are so popular.

Book Description

This is the story of the trapper, Link Stevens, and his fearless snow dog, Chiri. It began when the trapper and his dog set out to rescue a naturalist stranded in the perilous Caribou mountains--the impenetrable storm-blasted heights from which no man has ever retumed. Forced to live by Stone Age methods, they relied on every resource of the dog's wild cunning and the trapper's woodlore. How they battled a killer cougar and bloodthirsty wolves, yet brought their man to safety, is a gripping, action-packed saga. It is also the stirring tale of the deep love between a loyal snow dog and his courageous trapper master.

These are two books that I read when I was in school (w-a-a-a-a-y back

old memories.

5 out of 5 stars the further adventures of "Snow Dog".......2006-05-12

This is the sequel to "Snow Dog". These are my favorite books by Jim Kjelgaard. Intrepid trapper Link Stevens and his semi-wild dog Chiri are in for a big adventure when an injured ranger rides into their camp. The ranger is tough, but his arm is badly broken and he cannot complete his mission: to find a naturalist and his pilot whose plane crashed in the unexplored virgin wilderness of the Caribou Range to the north. Link sets up the ranger in his cabin and sets out to find the downed plane. Link and Chiri's home territory is sparse and hungry this year. It is early spring. After a bad winter of trapping, Link is amazed at the bounty of nature he finds as he and his dog journey north on foot. The Caribou Range is mythic and virgin territory. Link only knows of two others who earlier ventured there, and never returned. A sign of earlier visitors to the Caribou Range is a grizzly Link is forced to kill. Its body contains the remenants of an arrow fashioned from spent ammunition. Things get complicated when Link finds a human footprint. This book is filled with even more outdoor adventure, survival, and natural beauty than the first book, "Snow Dog". It is really exciting reading.

5 out of 5 stars Lost Without Reach.......2006-05-11

Wild Trek is a story about a trapper, Link Stevens, and his loyal companion a snow dog named Chiri. Wild Trek tells the story of Stevens and Chiri as they travel together to find a Naturalist and a Bush Pilot who are stranded in the far out reaches of civilization because their plane crashed in the remote back country of Northern Alaska. Stevens and Chiri must cross the Caribou Mountains, a place from which no man has ever returned, to save these men.

From the first page of the book, I was hooked on Alaska. The author Jim Kjelgaard describes every detail of the Alaskan landscape with much detail and color. Stevens and Chiri experience many ups and downs during their journey to safety. There were many turning points in the story; just as soon as one problem was solved another one would arise, creating new challenges to be overcome.

Wilderness survival books are my favorite and this is by far one of the best I have read. If you like wilderness survival and action packed stories then you will like Wild Trek. Read this book and join Stevens and Chiri as they try to return the stranded travelers to civilization.

5 out of 5 stars Kjelgaard's Greatest Work.......2004-09-02

Truely a well developed masterpiece. The plot was exiting and everything is in wonderfull discription. I just recently read ''Snow Dog'',another Kjelgaard favorite of mine, and now I see where Chiri came from. Read ''Snow Dog'' first to get the full story of Chiri's history. This is by far Kjelgaard's greatest work. If you are a dog lover, like me, or you need a thrilling adventure book this is a must read. And thank's Jim for all of your books, they are all captivating and thrilling.

4 out of 5 stars Wilderness survival.......2003-12-05

This wilderness adventure story starts slowly, but the action picks up once our hero, Link Stevens, finds the men he was sent in the mountains to find. Thats when the chalenlege of bringing these men to safety begins. The story begins when Link Stevens volunteers to retrieve two men who crashed a plane in the mountains. Link brings his loyal wolf\dog Chiri. After some time Link finds the men alive, yet one of them has gone crazy from the isolation. Link must then battle the elements, wild animals, and all of the challenges of the mountains. all the while his dog Chiri helps greatly in this struggle. In fact, Link could never make it without the protection of Chiri. This great story will appeal to all readers, as long as reluctant readers can get through the first few slow chapters.
