Book Description

The Cat and company travel by hot air balloon up and into various weather phenomena including rain, snow, thunder, tornadoes, and (yikes!) even hurricanes! Along the way they learn about thermometers, anemometers, wind vanes, cloud formations, humidity, fog, smog, weather folklore, and how to stay safe in lightning. Written and illustrated in Seussian style, this a great addition to the Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library!

5 out of 5 stars Happy Grandson.......2006-07-08

My grandson was very happy with this book. He loves reading books by Dr. Seuss and knows when he comes to Grandma's house a new one will be waiting for him. The book was presented as "used" but it looks brand new! Delivery time was as promised. Only negative comment for all the used books I have purchased thus far is that the postage charged has been far more than the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to weather concepts.......2004-10-25

I think this is one of the best of the books in Cat in the Hat's Learning Library. In this book, the rhymes are crisp and interesting. Some of the concepts introduced/covered include: meteorologists, weather maps, clouds, evaporation, condensation, snow, rain, thunder, lightning, tornadoes, and climatology. This book covers a lot in the simple and effective Cat in the Hat style.

4 out of 5 stars Informative about a cat's body language.......2007-07-21

This was good if you want to have a basic understanding of what your cat's body movements mean and how they translate to how they are feeling. I recommend to read it with your children as there are many good pictures and it will better help them understand when to pet the cat and when to let it alone!

1 out of 5 stars Not informative.......2007-07-06

I bought this after reading other reviews, but I was extremely disapponted in this book. The title is very misleading. I've had cats for years and wanted to learn more about their behavior and the differnt types of meows. This book does NOT do this. It's very basic and they write about behavior most children could figure out after being around their cat for a while. It mostly addresses cats behavior with other cats which an idiot can figure out without having to read about it. Not worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars What is My Cat Thinking.......2007-03-31

An excellent primer for cat owning beginners and pros. The photos clearly illustrate the acompanying text. A wonderful addition to any cat companion's library and a must for beginners!

4 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Little Book!.......2005-12-12

The author seems to know her stuff.

The book has an excellent lay out. Lots of pictures, easy to navigate, wonderful index, sort of like a FAQ on cat behavior.

Everyone from the novice to experienced cat owner is likely to learn something about the subject.

The subject itself is a little bland. Before you cat lovers all get upset about this remark, let me explain. According to Bailey the majority of cat behavior is rather simple, basic needs for safety, exploration, food, etc. Cat behavior is also rather simple: tail up or down, rub off scent, etc. This makes portions of the book repetitious. This is not a complaint. It is better to be truthful and a little bland than to invent a bunch of human response and lay those on the cat.

All in all it's a good book and worth owning. Cat owners won't be disappointed.

This is one of the best books out there. It is very thorough, informative and detailed. I could not put it down, took it on our family vacation last month and I learned so many things that will benefit our 2 dogs which are like our kids-A must have for everyone, and a great gift, I bought a few for friends and co-workers and they love it too!

2 out of 5 stars Doc Halligan's What Every Pet Owner Should Know..........2007-05-15

While I'm no expert on dog care, I've read at least a dozen books on the subject and have talked with numerous pet owners about general pet care. This book, however, is perhaps best aimed at an audience that is less informed and less educated. I say this because in the introduction to this book, the author describes her early experiences of working at a vaccination clinic and treating numerous victims from hurricane Katrina. The author is also president of the ASPCA-LA. With this kind of background, I presume the author's experience is primarily based on worst case scenarios of pets that had been either neglected or abandoned by their owners. And this book is geared more towards that audience, who probably wouldn't read a book on pet care in the first place. If you really want quality information on pet care, buy another book and skip this one.

2 out of 5 stars My Kitties Of Mass Destruction.......2007-06-28

Hmmmm... this book was a little too warm and fuzzy for me, and my cats still don't do what I want them to do. I like to call them my kitties of mass destruction.

I know the above statement doesn't really offer any constructive criticism so let me see if I can put into words what I didn't like about this book. Warren and Fay seem to be very caring and compassionate animal lovers but there didn't seem to be a whole lot of practical advice regarding getting cats to do what you want.

There were however, lots of cute stories about their animals sprinkled with a bit of advice - most of which I'd already heard. It was a nice read if you like animals (which I do) but not much help in the whole "getting them to do what you want" area.

1 out of 5 stars Fluffy book about "Fluffy".......2007-03-11

I found this book uninformative and a waste of money. I'm sorry that I din't buy a used book. This book was too cute with too many cute stories. I was more interested in learning about cat behavioral problems and how to solve them. I lost patience with this book. A very silly book.

1 out of 5 stars All fluff and no facts.......2007-02-09

If Warren Eckstein had chosen to market this book as a collection of entertaining pet anecdotes and essays, I would have no problem giving it five stars.

However, he's attempting to pass this book off as a step-by-step animal training guide, which it is not.

I found it unstructured and impractical in terms of how to physically train a cat to do anything; perhaps the advice was hidden among the inane Kittyspeak, in which Eckstein insisted on writing? It's good that he understands that cats are intelligent and need to have their attention engaged so they don't becoming bored furniture fungus. Unfortunately he doesn't get that many readers are the same way. Both cats and humans of a bookish bent will end up languishing in their chairs and reading Nietzsche when continually addressed like four-year old children -- i.e. bored out of their skulls.

This book offers little in the way of research or references to support his perspective on animal training. There is no bibliography, and in fact, he often claims that his beliefs are to the contrary of most trainers' experience or scientific findings.

For example, he believes that cats only purr when happy, despite the fact that studies have shown the purr's frequency helps to mend broken bones (which is why cats also purr when stressed). He disses behavioral theory in such an off-hand way that I wonder if he knows who BF Skinner is at all, and that numerous modern trainers utilize the methods of positive reinforcement (for both animal and human subjects) with excellent results.

Karen Pryor's book "Don't Shoot The Dog!" was a far more insightful, contructive and beneficial read in terms of training my cat (as well as dealing with animals and people in general). I would recommend it over this ball of fluff any day.

5 out of 5 stars How To Get Your Cat To Do What You Want.......2007-01-12

This book has so much good information - even for a long time cat owner like me. Warren Eckstein has an impressive background in animal training and understanding in animal psychology! In this book he provides wonderful insights into the psychology of cats. This book has greatly helped me with an adopted older kitty. His recommendations have helped me establish a better relationship with a sensitive kitty who has had a difficult history. I highly recommend his book!

4 out of 5 stars Helpful and funny.......2006-03-17

The book gave some really great pointers...but I wish it would have mentioned how do deal with different cat personalities. He generalized a bit...I still cant get my little brat to make eye contact with me but he does enjoy baths.

Book Description

A charming new mystery series from beloved and bestselling author, Gilbert Morris...

Introducing...

Jacques the Ripper: A tough–minded “Savannah” breed of feline–fierce, enormous, and with a mind of his own.

And...

Cleo: A multi–colored “Rag Doll” with long silky hair. Cleo is as affectionate as Jacques is tough and her favorite mode of transportation is draped over the shoulder of the nearest human.

In their debut mystery, Jacques and Cleo and their owner...or rather the human they own, Kate Forrest, and her son, Jeremy, move to a beautiful beach house in Gulf Shores, Alabama, left to Kate by a distant relative.

The catch is that another distant relative, wanna–be novelist (and bonafide cat–hater) Jake Novak, has also inherited an interest in the house. Undeterred, Kate and Jeremy move in the downstairs quarters and Jake takes the separate apartment upstairs.

Then, when a murder occurs...everyone is stumped—but feline sleuths Jacques and Cleo come to the rescue and reveal the identity of the killer.

About this series: For years, mystery readers and cat lovers alike have devoured the suspense novels by Lillian Jackson Braun, Rita Mae Brown and others, in what has developed into the bestselling cat–mystery genre. Now, veteran fiction author Gilbert Morris joins the ranks of those prestigious novelists with his Jacques and Cleo, Cat Detectives series, destined to become a welcome addition to this genre by feline fanatics everywhere.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars What the Cat Dragged In ~ Reviewed .......2007-10-01

Gilbert Morris has a great set-up for his new cozy mystery series--featuring "cat detectives" Jacques and Cleo. The person belonging to the two cats is a struggling single mother named Kate. She's astounded to discover she's inherited a beach house in White Sands, Alabama and the money that comes along with it. Unfortunately, there are two conditions. First, she has to live in the house and take care of the former owner's animals, which include a raccoon, a ferret, a rabbit with a death wish (she constantly chews electric cords), a cussing parrot, a pit bull, and a snake. Second, she has to share the house with Jake, another heir who is also required to live in the house.

Jake and Kate are truly the odd couple. Jake is a former cop who believes in cooking everything from scratch and keeping things neat as a pin. Kate believes in microwave thawing and throws her clothes on the floor. Kate has a natural affinity for animals. Jake hates them, even though he grudgingly agrees to help take care of the menagerie because of the terms of the will. Kate is a Christian and Jake is a skeptic. So naturally, sparks fly. Does anyone see a romance coming?

Most of What the Cat Dragged In sets up Jake and Kate's inheriting the money, meeting, and attempting to set up housekeeping together. (Although for propriety's sake, Jake occupies an upstairs apartment of his own.) And of course, we get to know the two cats, Jacques and Cleo. Cleo's a sweet, fluffy ragdoll. Jacques is a rare cat known as a Savannah, which is half Serval wild cat. His nickname is "Jacques the Ripper." Both Jake, the former cop, and Trouble the pit bull are afraid of him.

The mystery starts pretty late in the book, which is all right because it frankly isn't as interesting as Jake and Kate, the animals, and the quirky characters in White Sands.
(Spoiler) This is a mystery, however, so eventually the friend of Kate's son, Jeremy, is killed, and Jeremy is a suspect. Jacques the Ripper comes to the rescue by uncovering an important clue that clears Jeremy.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, for feline lovers and everyone else too!.......2007-08-13

I enjoyed this book from cover to cover! As a cat lover, I enjoyed that the cats contribue to the dialog, adding their 2 cents in! Mr. Morris paints beautiful pictures with his words. The characters and plot seem carefully created. I can imagine these characters as my friends and neighbors. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

4 out of 5 stars Cat Lovers Unite!.......2007-06-18

Kate and her son Jeremy have discovered they have inherited a house in White Sands, Alabama which would mean a better life for the two of them. The catch is they have to share the house with another person plus take care of the many animals that already live there. Jake's not too thrilled about sharing the house with Kate and Jeremy plus their two cats Jacques the Ripper and Cleo. He doesn't like animals period and the cats share his same affection about them. The trio begin to adapt their new life together where all seems to be going well at first. Then a murder happens that affects them and it's up to the cats to save the day to find the killer.

This is a new genre for Morris, he's written several mysteries before but none quite like this. What I found very different about this book was the use of pop culture and modern slang. I never would have thought I would have read the words Dr. Dre or 50 Cent in a Gilbert Morris book! Kate's and Jake's situation is unique as this is one of the few CBA books I've read that have an unmarried female and male living together in the same house. This does get brought up several times in the book by church members as an issue but I think it's handled well. I don't mind reading about animals so I liked the mini zoo of animals the two have to keep in the house. However I thought it was unbelievable to keep a raccoon was kept as a pet. Aren't they wild animals? And how come nothing is mentioned about rabies? I didn't really like Jake's character. He came off as very male chauvinist and rude. Personally also I thought he acted like an old man instead of a 30 year old. I didn't like how he would insult and throw away Kate's food. He just felt like a cardboard stereotypical character with no real likable personality. Rhiannon is another strange character as I don't know many young girls who would read the encyclopedia cover to cover.

I liked the cats and their participation in the story. Although I felt that they didn't play a big of a role as the cover made it out to be. Hopefully that changes in the next book because I liked reading about what they were thinking and the communication between the two. The mystery was very good as I did not know who the killer really was and was quite surprised by the outcome. If you like cozy mysteries, this is one I think you'd enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Cats..and suspense.......2007-03-04

If you love suspense and cats, you'll love What the Cat Dragged In. This Gilbert Morris book is the start of a series that includes two cats Cleo and Jacque, and their person.

Kate Forrest, and her son Jeremy are barely getting by in Memphis. Kate is a 29-year-old widow, trying to raise her twelve-year-old son, while working two low-income jobs. Mother and son are living in a run-down apartment with their two unusual cats. Kate suddenly finds she is the beneficiary to a large estate left to her by an unknown distant relative. Little does she know that there are strange stipulations to the inheritance, as well as another unknown relative with whom she will have to share the estate.

Jake Novak, a down-and-out Harley-riding, ex-Chicago cop, who hates cats and is trying to write the Great American Novel, thinks it is a good time to get out of Chicago. He decides this is the answer to be able to spend time working on his novel. Jake, Kate, Jeremy, Cleo and Jacque, head to White Sands, Alabama to fulfill the quirky requirements of inheriting the spoils.

Soon they are sharing the grand home on the beach and getting acquainted with the locals, as well as the inhabitants of the house: a parrot who talks dirty, a ferret and a raccoon, to name a few. Jake is trying to avoid the cats and other creatures, while Jacque and Cleo have their cat conversations about their "Person" and the Intruder (Jake). As they are all learning to live together in this menagerie, they soon find that one of their neighbors has been murdered.

Add a few gangsters, strange neighbors living in a shack, and of course the unusual cats, makes this a fun and quick read. I can hardly wait to see what this crew gets into next.

Armchair Interviews says: For those that love cats--and suspense in the same book, this one is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Lifesaver!.......2007-10-01

Having had probably 8 cat books, this is the only keeper. It may have saved the life of my beautiful Tortie-Tabby. At the age of 11, she had a Petit Mal seizure and miraculously it was described abundantly in the book. I took her right in and rec'd some Rx that I gave her for several months. Gradually, her seizures diminished and she has lost her fear of them and has smoother reactions.

I've referred to this book dozens or hundreds of times. I totally love it.

4 out of 5 stars This Belongs In All Cat Homes.......2004-01-18

If our cats could tell us what's wrong or where it hurts, it would be easy to diagnose and treat their illnesses. Since this isn't the case, this book is a must have. Written by a veterinarian, this book offers help in an easy to use format. The first chapter discusses emergency situations such as bite wounds and heat stroke, while the second chapter describes abnormal behaviors such as aggression and lethargy. The following eight chapters tour the animal's body from head to toe, discussing symptoms, diagnoses, possible causes, care, and prevention. At the end, there's a checklist for good health and information on performing weekly home exams. If you don't have a copy, I highly recommend picking one up.

I also like that the cat relates to a boy, since many of the images in our society often show cats or kittens with little girls. If you have a son and cats or kittens please purchase this book for him.

5 out of 5 stars What is that said the cat........2006-11-10

This is a very fun entry-level reader because it combines common words, with very wonderful (expression filled) drawings and the story-line is constantly building to the surprising ending.
Our grandchildren all enjoy reading it to us.

5 out of 5 stars Great for new or struggling readers.......2006-04-04

I really love beginner books that are truly for beginners. This one fits the bill. The repetitive, rhyming style makes it accessible for very new readers. Lots of short words to sound out like cat, pup and pig, with clear, uncluttered illustrations to help the reader along. All the animal names are repeated near the end of the story, which is funny and satisfying. It's one of my kindergartener's favorites.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book !.......2006-02-25

We already had this funny book and loved it so much, we had to order it for my son's kindergarten class. This book is perfect for beginning readers. Almost all the sentences have rhymes, like "it is big, said the pig", "let me see, said the bee". The drawings are well done and funny, and are perfect for helping kids to guess the words.
I know it will be a favorite of your child and that you will have a great time reading it again and again (plus, it's easy for kids to memorize it)

The book was good and I liked it a lot.I would like for others to read it and enjoy the excitement that I had.

5 out of 5 stars "what is That?" Said the Cat.......2000-12-10

This is one of my 6 yr old son's favorite books. It's an easy read. If you have a beginner reader this is a great book. One or two sentences per page sometimes just a word, great pictures and funny ending. Best of all my son can read it on his own and finds it funny every time it's read. In our family we give it five stars. Hope this helps.

4 out of 5 stars nice gift.......2007-09-18

This book makes a nice gift for a cat lover....it has nice pictures with inspirational quotes.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful little book.......2005-08-05

This short book is filled with cute and adorable photos of cats. Each photo is accompanied by a "lesson" -- sometimes wise, sometimes funny, but always put into a fresh context by the photo. A great gift for cat lovers.

5 out of 5 stars A short, cute, and witty gem for cat lovers........2004-02-17

This is a delightful collection of feline photography, each photo accompanied by a small quip or word of wisdom that is sure to bring a smile to the reader's face. The pictures are beautiful and well-executed, and the cats shown in them are equally diverse and attractive. My favorite shot has got to be one of a kitten who has somehow gotten him/herself draped inextricably over the arm of a lamp, and dangles in midair awaiting rescue. The caption reads: "Give in and accept help in an impossible situation." This little book would make an excellent stocking-stuffer, or simply a treat for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic photos and clever captions.......2000-04-04

This little photo book is absolutely wonderful and makes a great addition to any pet lover's library. The photos are so adorable, and the captions of life's lessons are so clever and cute. A great way to showcase the ways cats enrich our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Hello Politically Correct Careers.......2004-04-12

This book was a gift to my 3 year old for Easter 2004. She loves the pictures of Hello Kitty as a ballerina and an artist. The book reinforces the alphabet (she already knows them) and introduces careers that are not readily thought of (i.e. scientist, explorer, juggler, pastry chef, yoga master). If you have a child who loves Hello Kitty, buy this book. It's well worth the money!
