Book Description
Based on police wiretaps and exclusive interviews with drug kingpins and hip-hop insiders, this is the untold story of how the streets and housing projects of southeast Queens took over the rap industry.
For years, rappers from Nas to Ja Rule have hero-worshipped the legendary drug dealers who dominated Queens in the 1980s with their violent crimes and flashy lifestyles. Now, for the first time ever, this gripping narrative digs beneath the hip-hop fables to re-create the rise and fall of hustlers like Lorenzo “Fat Cat” Nichols, Gerald “Prince” Miller, Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff, and Thomas “Tony Montana” Mickens. Spanning twenty-five years, from the violence of the crack era to Run DMC to the infamous murder of NYPD rookie Edward Byrne to Tupac Shakur to 50 Cent’s battles against Ja Rule and Murder Inc., to the killing of Jam Master Jay, Queens Reigns Supreme is the first inside look at the infamous southeast Queens crews and their connections to gangster culture in hip hop today.

An Urban History Lesson....Life chooses you.......2007-08-31
I read this book in its entirety today. It bought back a lot of memories and pain. As a 38YO husband, father of 3 beautiful children, with a wonderful wife and 18 year IT career, I grew up during the 80's crack epidemic. I sold drugs. I was a crack addict. I watched childhood friends involved in the drug game die. I saw beautiful women become crack addicts. Even then, as a teenager, I wondered why something so small could cause so much destruction. This book reveals a lot. How drugs almost destroyed Urban America, in particular NYC. This book should serve as a history lesson to young people who view rappers as gangsters. "Real gangsters move in silence". This book should also serve as a reminder to people who survived the devastating decade that was the 80's. "Never forget where you come from".
It's easy for privileged people to dismiss the urban population; however when you have people that are disenfranchised, suffer abject poverty, and lack educational, creative, and/or financial opportunities; the majority will do whatever necessary to create opportunities for themselves, even if it means hurting their own. It's unfortunate that the crack epidemic was largely ignored until children of White America started dying.
Although the author highlights the exploits of particular South Queens drug gangs, I think the overall context of the book should be reviewed in a larger perspective: From the Civil Rights inequality, to government disenfranchisement, as a result of Vietnam, subsequent escapism via drug abuse, to opportunities via drug sales, to capitalism/exploitation via urban music.
This book should serve as a guide for kids that want to get involved in hip-hop/rap music (STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF. STOP BEING SOMEONE ELSE).
It should serve as a wakeup call to those (Music companies/Law Enforcement/Religious organizations) that want to exploit kids in the music game (STOP EXPLOITING OUR CHILDREN).
It should serve as a warning sign to all Black youth that murder each other for nonsense (STOP KILLING EACH OTHER. THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT US TO DO).
As long as there's a mongoose, there'll be a snake. As long as there's an audience, there'll be a minstrel. It's sad how life chooses you....
Excellent.......2007-01-31
If your from Queens, or you have listened to 90's rap, then this is a good book for you. It explains the litany of characters(criminals) mentioned in so much gangster rap. It is also gives excellent accounts of the "crack" years of NYC in Queens. There were so many locations in Queens, that I was stunned to find out the history of. Well worth the cheap purchase price!
Will The Snake Charmer Please Stand Up!!.......2006-10-24
I ordered the book last week and read it in 2 days. I feel like I'm still trapped within the pages. Looking at the picture of the author Ethan Brown I found it hard to believe he could get so many people to talk. No offense but the man looks like a skinhead. I did some research on him and found out he's not even from NY much less Queens which puzzled me even more because why write a book about Queens if you have no history or ties to the era or place? Then I see a dedication to someone he calls "the snake charmer" who he claims is the preeminent street historian. If the snake charmer is the preeminent street historian then Ethan must be his stenographer. For the life of me I can't figure out why someone with all this riveting detail would allow someone else to claim the credit in exchange for anonymous praise. The book was EXCELLENT but I want to see Ethan give credit where it's due because there's no way in hell HE could've done that book. Anyone who reads it and sees his picture will have to agree.
Read It ASAP.......2006-07-21
No matter what you're reading, put it to the side for a bit, especially if it's fiction. This is fact. Everyone from 13 to 43 should read this book. If you lived through the crack era you should read this book. If you grew up anywhere in the five boroughs of New York can identify, you can remember the stories, you can remember the fear you can remember the body count delivered on the front page of the newspaper. If you remember being afraid to ride the trains and welcomed the site of the red tams you should read this book.
Brown impressed me with the thoroughness and professionalism of his work. He didn't try to sell us mythical figures or misguided youth. He simply told the story as it was, as it is.
If you have African American youth in your life give them this book. Buy them their own copy; make them read it because they need to know. The youth of today weren't there in the 80's and 90's. They think the rappers they like are "gangsta". No matter how hard you try to tell these kids that you can't be a multi-millionaire rapper and gangsta, what you think the police wouldn't notice. Real ganstas hustle to get out of the ghetto and are hardly concerned about keeping it real. I say all that to make this point...Queens Reigns Supreme is the book that can challenge a generation to question the direction that rap is going. This is a book that can open eyes and cause a life changing thought process. The revelation of a number of things in this book will have you seeing things in a new light. If you never invested in a book starting with this one would be a good choice.
The Realness.......2006-06-23
This book is not a fictional "hood" farce as I initially thought upon seeing it in the store. After reading the abstract on the back cover, I was compelled to read the Preface and first two chapters while still sitting in the store. I purchased the book and read it in less than 48 hours. I literally could not put it down. It is filled with the TRUE stories of Queens hustlers like the Supreme Team and Pappy Mason. These are hood icons that you may hear about in a rap record but never know who they really were. This book does an excellent job of conveying the street savvy and relentlessness of these hustlers who amassed millions as well as carefully cataloguing their down fall. There are times where you read the book and almost hear these figures talking to you or reading what was going through their minds at the time. You see them on top of the world as well as at the bottom of the barrel. You see them as violent and fearless as well as seeing them desperate and vulnerable.
The connection that is drawn to the current hip hop music and culture is drawn seemlessly. There are a lot of familiar names and some unfamiliar stories. Some truths come out and we see who is "gangsta" and who's not. This is a must read for anyone interested in Urban History/ Culture.

THE LORD OF LASAGNA REIGNS SUPREME!
There's a lot of action in GARFIELD's life. It just happens to revolve around the refrigerator! So whether he's reviewing the list of things he's not going to do today, testing the first law of physics--"Bodies at rest tend to stay at rest"--or challenging Odie to a do-nothing contest, you can be sure that when mealtime comes, GARFIELD will have all the energy he needs!

Tons and Tons of Fun.......2006-11-03
Great reading. Perfect for a relax after a stressful day at work
Garfield strikes again.......2005-08-10
Without a doubt, he's the coolest cat out there in comics. With his crazy insane appetite, his total love for Odie (kidding) and attacking the mailman on a regular basis. This is one that wont disappoint, but again this is Garfield so its hard to do that anyways. Love having 3 books together in one pack, it just goes to show. Even after all these years his comics are as funny as ever.
Excellent!.......2005-07-28
The service was excellent! The books were shipped quickly, and the condition was excellent. My son just became interested in Garfield, and he reads and re-reads these books. It keeps us both happy that he is reading, and keeping his skills up, and he enjoys the material. I'll be back again for future purchases!

Some cats chase mice; Garfield prefers to take legal action. When down on the farm, the city kitty puts up with-and puts down-Jon and his barnyard brother. No wonder Garfield’s often in a bad mood.
But no matter what, he’s always in the mood for food!
The GARFIELD FAT CAT 3-PACK series collects the GARFIELD comic-strip compilation books in a new, full-color format. Garfield may have gone through a few changes, but one thing has stayed the same: his enormous appetite for food and fun. This book is really funny. In fact, all Garfield books are. You should really read them!
Funny as usual but..........2006-12-14
This is the 13th volume of the series. It's great to see Garfield strips in color but why change the format? Now it's twice as big as the first twelve volumes...

Garfield - On & On.......2007-08-13
As always, it was pretty funny! The only thing I thought was a problem (A too common problem) was that the strips started to fade into each other, and into the strips from earlier books. All of em funny, all of em following the old formula. I guess when you've written thirty books you run a little low on ideas, so I can't really blame Jim Davis. Entertaining comic strips with everybody's favorite fat cat.
Great Reading .......2006-11-03
It is good, but i expected more of it after reading the tenth fat cat 3-pack
The only TRULY good comic strip still being printed.......2001-08-21
With "The Great One" Charles Schultz's passing (RIP Mr. Schultz and thank you!), this leaves Garfield as the only current comic strip that remains consistantly funny. This review is a pretty universal review for all of the books. If you're a Garfield fan and you don't have them: Get them!!!
Yet another grest Garfield masterpiece!.......2000-07-27
This fat cat 3-pack (like the others) is not only entertaining to read (like the others), but it is also a great reference book of Garfield comics (like the others), because from the point the book starts to the point it ends it has every daily comic in the order they were in the newspaper without skipping any days.
Funny! A great book in all Circumstances!.......2000-04-06
Great book! It was a great buy and if you're thinking of buying it, don't hesitate! Garfield makes me laugh a lot from his attidude and his interest in all the things that people love to do.
Customer Reviews:
The more you read.. ...the more you love him!!.......2004-05-21
I am too old for comic books but I simply love Garfield. He always manages to bring a smile on my face. Although repetetive at times, Jim Davis does a terrific job each time in presenting Garfield in all his lazy and mischevious glory. This Fat Cat 3-pack is a great value as it has 3 books combined into 1. I think that the paper quality is different from the actual books but who cares!!! I enjoy the books anyways.
The Twelfth Garfield Fat Cat 3 Pack.......2003-03-16
I think Jim Davis out did himself this time! Outragously funny!
I even gat a detention durring reading class from laughing so hard!!!!
Jon Davis strikes again.......2002-08-22
This is one of the funniest garfield books that I have read. Lots of comics with John trying to hook himself up with a date. I think there needs to be more comics of garfield beating up on nermal.
A Handsome Volume Completes This Post-doc's Library.......2001-09-16
Somewhat reminiscent of Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, this massive tome puzzled me for years until Davis' macabre vision of one's relation to oneself finally struck me; that with each abuse of Odie, Garfield moves closer and closer to the pro-active diad that is John and Odie. Eventually the suicide-prone, self-loathing cat which we as a society find quite the jester winds his way through the high road to alienation, much like a Puccini character. The subtle irony of Garfield's monumental epiphany finally places Garfield at the pinnacle of the newly formed triumvirate, and finally, societal acceptance. In this way, Garfield becomes so cynical that he adopts an anti-cynical work ethic in order to preach his intellectual treatise to the masses, thus eventually compromising his own moral barometer in the worst way. Like Icarus, Garfield flies too close to the brilliant heat of personal ulra-rationalism, and winds up destroying himself via his self-enforced taboo of social acceptance. Brilliant.
Really funny and really good!.......2001-08-27
Everything's great in this book! Garfield's new college intern, Biff, Garfield's 20th and 21st birthday, Jon and Garfield's nature hike, Garfield against the scale, Garfield against the goldfish, Garfield against the birds, Garfield against the dogs, when Nermal visits, Jon and Garfield at the diner, when Pooky gets washed, oh, you just gotta read this! I'm sure that it's better than all the other three-packs!

This is my mat! The fat cat sat on the mat. "Get off!" said the rat. But the fat cat just sat. So the rat got his bat. Then the rat got his hat. Will the rat and the bat and the hat get the fat cat off the mat?
Customer Reviews:
Great rhyming!.......2007-01-03
It's a great book for the beginning reader. Cute story. As for the words "hates", "stupid", and "brat", I used white-out and put in my own words. I'm surprised the publisher let those words into a beginning reader book. I'm glad to see a longer (32 pages) level 1 book.
Very Disappointing.......2005-11-22
My son, who has just turned 4, has just started to learn to read. After completing his first book at school, we went and purhcased this book as it had many of the simple short words that he is learning. Given the level of the book, it never occured to me to review it first and imagine my surprise when I read "The rat hates the cat" and "You think I am stupid" and "My dear little brat". My 4 year old is aware of words like "hate" and "stupid" but he also knows that those are not kind words and they don't have a place in our house. I am returning the book and now question Harper Collin's ability to review books and give their opinion.
I agree with a previous reviewer in that the book is very rude and does not teach good behavior. I want my son to learn to read, but not at the expense of his manners!
I strongly encourage those considering this book to re-consider. There's enough rudeness and harsh words in this world without having to introduce them in a small child's book.
[...]
1 star or 5 stars? : All of the reviewers are right.......2005-11-02
Good things:
* Longer and slightly more complex story than most reading books
* Humorous plot with twists (I love how the rat is going to get a bat to get the cat off the mat and it turns out to be a flying bat as opposed to a baseball bat.)
* good rhyming
* my 4 year olds are just starting to grasp reading and this book and its many *at words was just about at their level and appealing enough that they were making an effort
Negative:
* I wish the characters were not so rude (I do think kids can distinguish between appropriate behavior and behavior that needs correcting). Giving them only model behavior is unrealistic and sometimes boring. However, in this book it will be up to you to reinforce any lessons about rudeness.
* I prefer not to have books about witches.
For me the positives outweighed the negatives enough to seriously consider buying it.
Inappropriate.......2004-09-28
This book uses words like "hate" and "stupid". These words are wholly unacceptable in a book meant for children aged pre-K to first grade.
Bad behavior.......2004-06-11
I purchased this book because of the good reviews here, but I am afraid that I have to disagree with popular opinion. The characters in this story are rude, inconsiderate, and just plain do not get along. The story is about a cat and a rat who are pets of a witch. The rat seems to be portrayed as the favored pet and the book states that the rat hates the cat and the cat doesn't care. When the witch leaves, the cat leaves the vat and goes to sit on the mat, which is believed to be the rat's mat. The rat tells him to move (not politely at all) and when the cat does not move, the rat's friends (a bat and a hat) join the rat in bullying the cat to move. They also try to entice him off of the mat with a fish. The cat (beligerently) will not leave the mat until the witch comes home and asks the rat "what makes you think it is YOUR mat?" at which point the cat (arrogantly and victoriously) smiles and returns to the vat.
The words are simple and rhyme, the bulk of them fitting into the -at family, but the behaviors displayed in this story are just plain bad and there are no repercussions for them. We try to teach our children positive behaviors that support getting along with one another. I prefer that my children read examples of good behavior rather than behaviors that I would not want them to exhibit.
Book Description
Witty, urbane, sassy, and downright delightful, here are the first three original books of pure Garfield collected in one packed volume. They tell the story of the feisty feline's birth, adoption, and growth into general wonderfulness---just in case you've forgotten --and remind us why we loved him like we do.

I remembered buying each certain volume for nearly $... each back when I was still in middle school. Now that they have the 3-pack volume out, this is definitely worth buying.
- It saves you money over buying each volume individually
- 3 in 1 fun
- Great way to start collecting the whole Garfield's series
- Great for anyone! Kids, Adults, or even grandparents that love comic books
- Great way to make your kids love reading
Once you buy one, you will want to buy the other 3-pack volumes as well! When you read, be sure to wear a diaper, because it might make you pee in your pants. :)

Book Description
A new cartoon collection from nationally syndicated "Sylvia" cartoonist Nicole Hollander, featuring inscrutable felines of impeccable taste. Cats who think too much, cats who plot dastardly deeds but get distracted, cats who hypnotize their owners, cats obsessed with food, food, food. A veritable kitty feast!
Customer Reviews:
More fun some repetition.......2004-07-06
Nicole Hollander's grasp of cat-human relations (you'll note which comes first) is pure genius, and in this second collection she was again delivers some of the most side-splitting bits of prose I've ever come across. Of course, to be fair, I do suppose you have to be something of a cat lover (or at least, live with cats) to understand her wit and humor -- in other words, the concept of two cats holding their owner's 1040 hostage for food might be lost on the uninitiated.
The only negative thing I will say is that this particular volume, "My Cat's Not Fat, He's Just Big Boned", contains some of the same material as her earlier "Everything Here Is Mine", which is the only reason I gave it four stars and not five.
Here's how your cat really thinks..........2004-03-07
Nicole Hollander's Sylvia comic strip is one of the most overlooked (and most hilarious) strips out there. She has many colections out there ("My weight is always perfect for my height--which varies" "You can't take it with you so eat it now" "That woman must be on drugs" etc). She is the Anti-Cathy. She is sarcastic and wacky...dry and droll...and literate and witty. Best of all she has many cat themed collections which are a hoot. THIS one is probably the best. So if you are on the look out for a laugh or if you are a cat person who wonders what is going on inside the walnut-sized brain of your favorite fur-person, the Sylvia collections (especially this one) are just the ticket!
Extremely funny book.......2000-06-19
Anyone who enjoys Nicole Hollander's sly and amusing view of the world will like this book; anyone with a particular fondness for cats probably will, too. If you have ever tried to imagine your cat's motives for doing the things they do, you will enjoy Sylvia's cats, whose motives are hilarious. Many of the jokes are probably above the heads of children, but even they will enjoy the antics the cats get up to.
It's as great -- and even better -- than her previous books.......1999-07-22
I bought this book from Amazon.com about two months ago and, as an admitted cat lover, am still loving this book dedicated to cats (and a small section to dogs). It's on my desk to my right and whenever I need a laugh, I just open up to any one of the pages. Thanks, Nicole!
If you think really hard.... you might get one of the jokes!.......1999-05-08
I saw the cover of this book, and thought it would be a funny addition. I coulden't wait to get it, and laugh my socks off. Once again.. Don't judge a book by it's cover. She has a few funny art clips, but nothing great. I found the book to be more of a put down, than funny. The book is black an white. Not color like the cover. It has 111 pages, and maybe a little cute art. Not a book I would recommend. Why bother wasting your time?
Customer Reviews:
Clever Fat Cat is a Charmer!.......2001-05-17
My 2 year old daughter loves this book! She has memorized it and can "read" it to herself! Fat Cat finds himself in a tree and becomes responsible for the eggs in a birds' nest. Fat Cat's friends want him to play but he declines as he is helping the little birdies hatch from the eggs. It teaches a a very timely lesson of accepting responsibility for your actions. This is not a lift-a-flap book, however there are 2 pages that unfold to advance the story. My daughter loves to open those pages. Also, with its big print and simple text, it is a great book for children who are just learning how to read.

The Garfield Fat Cat Masterpieces 2007 Wall Calendar is a great hit with cat lovers. Mimicking great Masterpieces of art, it is humorous, colorful and fun. I don't have a cat because I am not a cat lover (sorry, no offense to anyone) but I LOVE the Garfield calendar. It is a great gift and a wonderful spacious calendar.
