Book Description
Redesigned. Reformatted. Remastered. Resequenced. Ready for Re-release. And it was already great to begin with!
Before there was Philadelphia Chickens, the #1 New York Times and Publishers Weekly children's bestseller with 319,000 copies in print, there was Rhinoceros Tap, the collection of seriously silly songs. Now Rhinoceros Tap returns in an all-new package to mirror Philadephia Chickens, with a spiffy audio CD. Written and illustrated by Sandra Boynton and with music by Boynton and Michael Ford, the same team that created Philadelphia Chickens, it's a read-along, sing-along, dance-along, oink-along collection of truly delightful children's music. There's "O, Lonely Peas," to appeal to the finicky young eater. The five-year-old's lament, "Bad Babies" ("They whine and they bite, they chew on your toys/And oh, do they make the most terrible noise"). "Tickle Time." "The Crabby Song." A mouse's impassioned ballad to his beloved, "I Love You More Than Cheese." And "Barnyard Dance," the song that was launched by the board book dear to the hearts of more than a million young readers.

Good but..........2007-07-25
This Boynton compilation is good but not as good as Philadelphia Chickens. My 5-year-old son has asked for this one repeatedly and we all know who should be the true reviewer here. It is, however, better than Dog Train which we have only listened to once.
Rhinoceros Tap.......2007-01-18
Great fun! Cute songs for the whole family. Kids like them because they're silly. Adults have fun with them, too, but the music is "real music", not kiddy stuff. Our two girls and their friends have fun making up dances to go with the songs - creative play at its finest!!
disappointed with this one.......2007-01-06
We bought this CD for our 7-year-old son (he already has "Philadelphia Chickens" and "Dog Train" by the same artist), but "Rhinoceros Tap" just doesn't have the charisma as the other ones by Sandra Boynton. The tunes just aren't catchy. Some of them remind me of old jazz/blues music, which I enjoy and appreciate, but the melodies are more on the somber side and it's hard to work in words that are suitable for children. As a result, my son loses interest after about the third or fourth number. The other CDs by Boynton are wonderful and we've just about worn them out, but somehow "Rhinoceros Tap" doesn't quite make the cut.
Fun for adults, too!.......2006-06-03
We received this CD for a gift a year ago and my kids(4 1/2 and 13mo) and I still BOTH enjoy hearing it! Fun, catchy tunes, with a bit of humor for adults, and silliness for kids.
Wholesome family entertainment we can ALL sing along to!.......2006-03-09
Despite some unevenness , this album and its accompanying book are a drive-time hit in our household - amazing considering my kids are 10 and 11 - oh, and a baby, who probably doesn't get all the subtleties, but enjoys the music nonetheless.
Our favourites include:
~Bad Babies
~The Crabby Song
~Tropical Sand
~O, Lonely Peas... which my daughter and I enjoy belting out together!
Others are not as popular, and we sometimes find ourselves fast forwarding through them... such as:
~Rhinoceros tap (particularly the instrumental version)
~Dinosaur round
We are mixed on songs like Bad Babies and Turkey Love Song - I like them, but the kids don't quite "get" the jazzy vocals, I think.
Our "greatest hit" from this album has got to be So Long Doggies, which is just the cleverest, funniest, well-sung thing I have heard for children in all my years of being a parent. Little kids won't catch all the references, but my big kids LOVE them! ("BONE voyage...")
Despite these unevennesses, this album makes a great change from all the commercialized kiddie schlock out there.
If you want something you can all sing along to and not have to worry about what kinds of influences your kids are being exposed to, grab this delightfully innocent album and be prepared to sing your heart out!

OK, but not great.......2006-08-12
As some of the other reviewers mentioned, this book is lacking in some critical details. I am only about 120 pages into it and have found some parts to be very confusing, particularly when it comes to the sequence of operations. Unfortunatly there are not many books about Rhino so I felt cornered into buying it. Do not pay full price to get a new one. I paid $8.00
For beginners only.......2004-08-22
The best thing about this book is it's colorful cover; the contents disappoint. When compared with a top-tier technical book such as the excellent "AutoCAD Bible", it is poorly organized, it's examples are confusing, and many explanations are downright befuddling. One example: one draws in viewports similar to AutoCAD's. The default layout is the standard Top, Front, Side (left or right), and perspective. The actual drawing entities are either established with the pointing device or entered as X,Y,Z coordinates via the command line. So far, so good. However, using the mouse to add entities to an existing object in 3D space yields unexpected results because Mr. Cheng has neglected to tell you that unless you pick the object using OBJECT SNAP, your entities will be drawn on the viewport's default construction plane which is at the origin. You overcome this by moving the construction plane through space to the location where you want to draw, but this crucial bit of information is inexplicably withheld until page 437!
Most readers will move to a 3D drawing program having at least a passing familiarity with a 2D product, and will want to become productive quickly. If you're on of these, if you are a professional and want to build on your 2D knowledge to create, render and present 3D objects quickly without having to wade through the sort of droll presentations typical of high school drafting classes, then you should look elsewhere.
Inside Rhinoceros Is the best book for BEGINNER !!!.......2003-06-18
100% a great book for beginner to start how to use Rhinoceros Version 2.0
This is the best book with a lot of pratical example, picture & very detail instruction.
It will be great tht if Mr.Ron K. C. Cheng can write the version 3.0 in future with a hard cover book.
Thank you !!!
Outdated.......2003-05-22
This book is for Rhinoceros Release 2.0 however the current version of Rhino is 3.0. This might sound like a minor detail but a lot of the illustrations in the book will not match what is showing on your screen which makes learning frustrating.
One of the Best Self study books I've ever read!!!!.......2002-11-30
Being a person who does alot of self studying (All Technical materials from networking to 3d)I would say this is one of the best books I've ever read. The explenation matches step by step to the excersizes given to practice. I've finished the book once and will try it one more time because of the volume of the info that has been explained in the book. There are very minor misstakes where a step or two have been droped by the author and makes the reader a little confuse ( the result of the excersize will not match the one in the book). But I have not seen or read any other book without those small misstakes.
Good Job Mr. Cheng.
Customer Reviews:
Repetitive and lacking in direction.......2007-09-06
This book is meant to be motivational, but the message grows stale rather quickly. The author's main points are that one must be thick-skinned and aggressive (a rhinoceros) to succeed in life, but they are repeated so often that most of the book could be summed up in a few pages. There is an overuse of exclamation points, question marks and UPPERCASE emphasis as if the author is not just content to continuously repeat the message. In his opinion, there must be internal emphasis as well.
After reading the book, I did not feel motivated, I felt relieved. The easiest thing in the world is to say, "Be powerful and tough" to anyone and everyone. However, life is far too complicated for a simple message, even a good one, repeated over and over to be enough to insure survival. Without some specifics about how a rhinoceros acts, then it is just a slogan. And let us not forget that the rhinoceros has the worst eyesight of any large mammal, so bad that it cannot tell a human from a tree at 15 feet. This means that it quite often doesn't know exactly what it is that it is charging. Charging ahead without knowing what is in front of you or what direction you are going is dangerous. There is little of that "think before you charge" mentality expressed in this book.
Absolutely Terrific.......2007-01-05
"Rhonoceros Success" was given to me by a close friend and I am grateful that this book fell into my hands! This book is jam-packed with life lessons that ultimately guide you toward prosperity and abundance in all areas of life. It clearly charts out the path of success and if you heed the recommendations, wealth will surely follow. I especially enjoyed the part about happiness. Since everyone chooses their own state of mind, choose to be happy and you will be happy! That alone is a simple concept that has very powerful ramifications (positive) if you make the choice. Treat yourself to success and buy this book ASAP!

rhinoceros success.......2006-08-04
I have an infinity or a weakness for self-help books. Most are just tooooo puffed up and vain and really not that helpful. Given the short attention span of the employees of this current dispensation, the book is a great tool for helping employees understand your goals and their goals. As a business owner with a payroll of over a million dollars per year I find that most employees will not read a book to actually help them figure out where they want to go. The guiding principles of this book are loosely based on believing in a higher power (like God, remember him?)and not in the expedient 'get rich quick' mentality that currently pervades our thinking. It also addresses taking personal responsibility for your attitude and your actions...something also missing in this society. I read about 5 to 6 books per month and I read this book 4 or 5 times per year (usually in the bathroom...it's that kind of a library book.) I would recommend this book even for very young adults as this society currently believes we should coddle them until they are 25 or 30. Dust yourself off and buy this book. Charge!
Awesome.......2006-02-27
I bought this book after listening to Jett on one of his CD's. I was completely satisified! A simple to read, with pictures book that anyone can understand. Even if you don't think "outside the box" you can appreciate the analogy that Scott Alexander gives about the habbits of successful individuls. This book focuses on the basic principals of people who achieve success no matter what working background they come from. I Love it!
Written for cows..........2006-02-26
Rhinoceros Success is a fun, odd little book with the basic philosophy of "full speed ahead!" for life. While that sort of simplicity can be refreshing sometimes, it can also become glib very quickly. The author, Scott Alexander, preaches this 'take no prisoners' attitude throughout the book, touting it as the surest path to wealth and success. However, there is no discussion of the ethics, personal sensitivity and discretion necessary to the success of even a "Rhino." The book is the notable effort of a fresh college grad, but it's neither deep nor thorough. Another reviewer had the right idea; stick with Wallace Wattles or Napoleon Hill for books on prosperity and success.
Book Description
In Rhinoceros, as in his earlier plays, Ionesco startles audiences with a world that invariably erupts in explosive laughter and nightmare anxiety. A rhinoceros suddenly appears in a small town, tramping through its peaceful streets. Soon there are two, then three, until the “movement” is universal: a transformation of average citizens into beasts, as they learn to move with the times. Finally, only one man remains. “I’m the last man left, and I’m staying that way until the end. I’m not capitulating!”
Customer Reviews:
Audacious Absurdity.......2006-04-28
Every time I read an absurdist play, I feel the typical symptoms: confusion, isolation, annoyance, and enlightment. Ionesco did not fail to dissapoint. That is he did not fail to deliver a play in pure absurdist form. Although the absurd structure is not easy to identify, one can always pinpoint it. Reading these play I heard many questions being asked: "how do humans fulfill their essence?", "is it necessary to commit to an ideal in order for life to have meaning?". These questions alone made it easy to distinguish what kind of plays these were about.
Ionesco sets forth plays questioning the appeal of power and beauty and its detrimental effects on human nature, more specifically with "Rhinocerous". I have heard many people say that this play deals mainly with the concept of human conformity, but is it really conformity when humans are drawn to an ideal and desire to portray it. Is power, beauty and love a form of conformity, or human nature? Are the Rhinoceri a representation of human nature in its purest state, or human nature gone awry?
A classic reconsidered.......2006-02-24
Perhaps it has to do with time, but I think Rhinoceros reads better from a perspective other than the one having to do with fascism. I chose to direct it recently from a very different point of view and one, I think, that would facilitate a bristling reading. The play is not about fascism per se, but rather about the rigidity of social convention, which was one of Ionesco's concerns. Just listen to Jean's constant criticisms of Berenger's appearance and behavior. The first time the Rhinoceroses appear, Berenger has had enough of Jean and is, wishfully thinking, wishing ill upon him. Why a Rhinoceros? Perhaps because Jean is so prissy; perhaps Berenger wishes he was thick-skinned enough to shrug off Jean's derision. The first act ends, indeed, with an argument between the two. Think of the appearance of the Rhino in the second act as an unconcsious working out of his wishful thinking: Jean is replaced by the insulting and condescending Dudard. Either Berenger misfires or he is testing--through Mrs Boeff--whether love can withstand "Rhinoceritis". It appears it can. Notice his conversations with Daisy. Read Act Three as Berenger taunting, harassing, and inflicting Rhinoceritis upon Jean in a kind of coup de grace, separating himself completely from Jean and the conventions he stands for. In the fourth act, however, we see the daydream get out of his control because, as Jean told us in the beginning, Berenger's thinking is all muddled; Daisy catches the 'disease' as she tries to win or seduce him, but he himself is, ironically, immune or a coward. Ionesco, of course, is richer than a simplistic point a view; but as Jean, again, tells us in the beginning, Berenger is a dreamer, and examining Berenger's state of mind as the cause of the rampant and rampaging outbreak of Rhinoceritis makes for a comic and tragic reading and very entertainig piece of theatre.
Dated Translation.......2004-06-08
Ionesco is one of the greatest of the absurdist playwrights. Rhinoceros is a great piece -- an amalgam of comedy and tragedy that will have you doubled over in laughter one moment and desperately frightened the next.
That being said, this translation has some serious problems. It was very strange to read as an American in 2004, because it is written in the English spoken in Great Britain in the 1960s. In addition to serious liberties taken by the translator (i.e. simply leaving out certain lines), there sometimes crops up a lack of flow that is all too common in translated literature.
Despite the fact that it's time for a new translation, I highly recommend Ionesco's plays, and Rhinoceros in particular. If you know French, read the original!
Surprisingly relevant for our times.......2001-01-17
One could do worse than to commemorate the installation of George W. Bush as President-apparent of the United States by reading "The Leader," one of the short plays in this collection. (My favorite quote these days: "But -- the Leader hasn't got a head!" "What's he need a head for when he's got GENIUS?") _Rhinoceros_ itself, of course, in its slow-motion documentation of the "rhinozation" of an entire populace, was originally a trope on the rise of Nazism, but could certainly be applied to the gradual rightward shift of the American political spectrum.
The French Version.......2000-03-15
Well, I am currently reading the French version of the play, and thankful for doing so. The english version is so off by literal standards it takes much of the meaning away. The entire cat discussion-that was based on cats and dogs-a dog has 4 paws therefore it is a cat because a cat has 4 paws. It is a very absurd play-but better in french.
Book Description
Bring Me the Rhinoceros is an unusual guide to happiness and a can opener for your thinking. For fifteen hundred years, Zen koans have been passed down through generations of masters, usually in private encounters between teacher and student. This book deftly retells fourteen traditional koans, which are partly paradoxical questions dangerous to your beliefs and partly treasure boxes of ancient wisdom. Koans show that you don’t have to impress people or change into an improved, more polished version of yourself. Instead you can find happiness by unbuilding, unmaking, throwing overboard, and generally subverting unhappiness. John Tarrant brings the heart of the koan tradition out into the open, reminding us that the old wisdom remains as vital as ever, a deep resource available to anyone in any place or time.
“Here’s a book to crack the happiness code if ever there was one. Forget about self-improvement, five-point plans, and inspirational seminars that you can’t remember a word of a week later. Tarrant’s is the fix that fixes nothing because there is nothing to fix. Your life is a koan, a deep question whose answer you are already living—this is the true inspiration, and Tarrant delivers.”—Roger Housden, author of the Ten Poems series
“Every life is full of koans, and yet you can’t learn from a book how to understand them. You need someone to put you in the right frame of mind to see the puzzles and paradoxes of your experience. With intelligence, humor, and steady, deep reflection, John Tarrant does this as no one has done it before. This book could take you to a different and important level of experience.”—Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul and Dark Nights of the Soul
“Bring Me the Rhinoceros is one of the best books ever written about Zen. But it is more than that: it is a book of Zen, pointing us to reality by its own fluent and witty example. John Tarrant has the rare ability to enter the minds of the ancient Zen masters as they do their amazing pirouettes upon the void and, with a few vivid touches, to illuminate our lives with their sayings.”—Stephen Mitchell, author of Gilgamesh: A New English Version
“This book’s straightforward honesty, clear writing, and destabilizing insight have a profound effect. John Tarrant does indeed bring on the rhinoceros and a host of other powerful but invisible creatures, ready to run us down when we refuse to acknowledge the fierce, awkward, and beautiful world we inhabit”—David Whyte, author of Crossing the Unknown Sea
“John Tarrant’s talent for telling these classic Zen tales transforms them magically into a song in which, as you read, the words disappear as the music continues to echo in your mind and make you happy. Mysteriously, like koans.” —Sylvia Boorstein, author of Pay Attention, for Goodness’ Sake
Customer Reviews:
This is by far my favorite book.......2007-03-17
Okay, Mountain Tasting runs a close second, but this book gets me through hard times. It is great to read aloud to a friend or spouse. It is the only book I now recommend to those dealing with life-threatening illnesses.
The koans work me and transform my suffering into something like acceptance.
My only complaint is that it has not yet come out in paperback.
bring me the rhinoceros.......2005-10-14
i love this book. it has crawled into my heart. tender, loving stories of real life and finding peace in the very midst of all life is. john tarrant writes with grace and beauty and humor. thank you!!!
Wonderful Small Gem!.......2005-04-30
Put simply, this is one of the best books on spiritual practice - and on living a good life - that I have ever read. If you're the least bit interested in such matters, you'll enjoy the rhinoceros. I had never felt much interest in koans before, but John Tarrant enabled me to see them in a new light. His is the warm, humorous, and deeply wise side of zen.
Please join in our discussion.......2004-12-10
I am a member of Pacific Zen Institute (PZI) and John Tarrant is my primary teacher. That being said, I offer a little different perspective than what you may read in other responses to his book, "Bring Me the Rhinoceros."
We at PZI have one-on-one interviews with John during any given month as well as at retreats. This is the context in which most people view koan work. But the word koan literally means "public notice". John has reconnected our community to the ways of old Chinese masters by bringing public discussion back into koan studies. He does this by conducting koan seminars throughout the year where we will meditate with a koan, then share our experience with the group.
What John has done with "Bring Me the Rhinoceros" is to offer every reader the opportunity to join in a grand public koan discussion. John writes how these koans have affected him; he writes about other people and their koan experiences; but it doesn't end here.
Sometimes I read one chapter just before going to sleep. Other times I read a chapter just before my morning meditation period. How have you experienced these koans? Join us, then, in this grand discussion.
Highly Reccomended reading for seekers.......2004-11-11
How comfortable I find myself in these pages. John Tarrant brings us intriguing stories and a Rhino, a thick-skinned beast that we can ride into the darkness of the unknown, into the mystery of who we are, why we suffer, and how joy can found on a path that goes beyond what can be conceptually understood. An excellent gift book too.

If you want to learn Rhino ...........2006-09-08
This book provides plenty of examples, grouped in a context in which they will be used. Some Nurbs, modeling theory and troubleshooting tips. Enough to answer questions as you go through the text but not so much as to be overwhelming.
The only fly in the ointment in my opinion was the chapter on Flamingo. I thought that chapter was organized in an awkward manner.
Horrible.......2004-06-06
Do not buy this book. Instead buy the online Rhino video tips from Mcneel. I bought this book expecting to learn something only to discover that the stuff I learned was useless.
The author spends the majority of the book explaining in detail--like the help menu--the various functions of Rhino, and NURBS in general. He then attempts to use every possible command to create the joystick, toothbrush, toy car, and shoe projects.
Save your time and money.......2004-03-25
Numerous omissions and typos made for a very frustrating read. Mislabeled drawings and missing or erroneous instructions made exercises difficult to follow. Fundamental exercises were superficial and fragmented without logical development or context making retention difficult. Rhino's supplied Level 1 and Level 2 Training Materials are far superior in all regards. Don't waste your time and money. The publisher and author were e-mailed regarding problems but no response.
Somewhat Helpful.......2003-12-13
This book has a good overview and general explanation of how things are designed in 3D. It takes you through the commands and tools step by step, with surprisingly few misprints. The CD that comes with it has the free demo program, and some tutorials. However, the lack of a glossary makes it an unnecessarily tedious read for anyone not familiar with advanced geometry and math. My dictionary wasn't much help. More serious omissions became apparent as I tried to use Rhino, like the very short entry on Boolean Unions. He doesn't even mention that they can fail to work, much less offer any solutions. This book saved me some time learning basic tools, and helped with general concepts, and is probably better than not having a text at all. I haven't bought Rhino yet, so I can't compare this to the manual that comes with the program.

Book Description
The Rabbit Ears Treasury of Animal Stories entertains and enlightens with these classic animal stories brought to life–read by your favorite stars and featuring original music by some of today’s greatest artists.
How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin & How the Camel Got His Hump
Read by Jack Nicholson • Original Music by Bobby McFerrin
These familiar favorites from Rudyard Kipling feature the tale of a Parsee man who seeks revenge on a nasty rhino followed by the story of a lazy camel who learns the hard way that pride and arrogance are never a good combination.
How the Leopard Got His Spots
Read by Danny Glover • Original Music by Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Hunting on the African plain was easy for the leopard since his light coat blended with the yellow hues of the landscape. But once all the animals moved to the striped and splotchy forest, things got much harder–so for his own survival he had to acquire spots. This tale is rich with subtle humor and enchanced by the gegntle sounds of South African a cappella harmonies.
The Monkey People
Read by Raul Julia • Original Music by Lee Ritenour
Revisit this Colombian fable of a village in the Amazon jungle where the lazy inhabitants do nothing but lie in their hammocks. Then a mysterious man arrives one day and creates monkeys who do everything for the villagers. When the monkeys take on every human activity–including complaining–the humans have to deal with the serious and silly consequences of their inaction.

Best audio stories available for all ages.......2007-09-15
The Monkey People story is a very sophisticated and easy to understand story that can be enjoyed by all age persons. Further it teaches a moral lesson about the need to take action rather than just talk.

At 25 I still love this book.......2007-09-15
I don't have any kids, but this book has actually been around for a long time. I was born in 82, and this book was by far my favorite. The illustrations are great and the message is even better. It's a really witty way to tell children that labels don't matter. The illustrations also make the book even better, my personal favorite as a child being when Fluffy sticks marshmallows all over his quills to make himself more fluffy.
Great Book.......2007-05-10
I bought this book because I'm going to school to become a teacher. It teaches kids that it is ok to be your self. Kids will laugh and so will parents.
Very fun to read.......2007-01-05
I bought this for my three year old daughter...again based on reviews on amazon. Other reviewers were right: this book is a hoot. Everytime we get to: "H...H...H...H...H...Hippo" my daughter bursts out laughing. Highly recommended. Great illustrations set off the writing.
Loved it!.......2005-04-05
This book is very appealing to me and my two kids (ages 2 and 5). The illustrations are wonderful, and it is very well written. The kids laugh as we turn the pages, and it is a book that reads well over and over.
Hilarious.......2005-03-20
This is a GREAT book. Well written and illustrated. This is one of the most hilarious children's books I've read to my child. We were laughing throughout the whole thing.
I highly recommend this book to both children and adults.
Book Description
This comprehensive volume contains nine of the most important, most indispensable plays of the modern theater. What Harold Clurman has done in this seminal collection is to create for us a portrait of the progress and turmoil of the twentieth century.

Nine Plays of the Modern Theatre.......2007-09-26
A wonderful book. We are using it in our Theater Appreciation group -- taking turns reading different characters. I recommend it.
Great selections!.......2000-03-26
People like Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, and Bertolt Brecht are some of the most influential modern playwrights, and this book collects some of their most important plays. Seminal works like "Rhinoceros", "Waiting for Godot", "The Caucasian Chalk Circle", and "American Buffalo" are compiled in this book. Fascinating reading!

Great for classrooms........2006-08-03
I've used this book with students from kindergarten to fifth grade. I made a flash video using the images from the book and added my own audio and sound effects. It's really an awesome book to do a "Create Your Own" with. Students can get really creative with the idea of having a wild animal in their own home that can do lots of random things for them. I recommend everyone buy this book now. It's worth it.
As for the comment on the mother hitting the kid in the book...Silverstein is obviously writing from a child's point of view. Children always think parents do things for no reason. "I didn't do anything except pee on all the toilet paper...She got mad for no reason!" Think about it.
Who does? You do!.......2005-10-15
My 5-year-old son absolutely loves this book! I loved Shel Silverstein as a child and I am excited that my son has discovered him already. I read this book aloud to my son's preschool class, and they laughed out loud! What better review is there than from a class full of 5-year-olds? The only reason I have given it 4 stars versus 5 is that it discusses the rhinoceros opening your uncle's beer can, and your mother hitting you. Luckily my son does not read yet, so in our version of the story the rhinoceros opens a CAN, and he keeps your mother from GETTING you. The rhinoceros appears peering out of a toilet, which anyone who knows a 5-year-old is aware, is pretty darn funny.
Just plain fun........2004-11-28
Yes it's plain - loose line drawings, and a sentence or half on each page. But it's fun. There's imagination, play, friendship, and everything else you want a "read to me" kid to hear and see.
No big lessons, just a bit of happy goofiness. I want more.

"And he is easy to love" -- as is this whimsical book........2002-09-19
I adore rhinos. A "cheap" rhinoceros -- well, there is no such thing, which is one of the tell-tale signs that Silverstein is up to his wonderful, tender, down-to-earth antics. ... It's a read-aloud book, so you can share your view of the world with them and vice versa. A great, honest book from one of our most honest children's writers. You'll love rhinos even more after reading the book with your kids (or, as an adult, with those you love or even by yourself). Now, if you're concerned by what other reviewers have written, read on; if not, stop here!
Let's not go too deep here; if we want literary criticism, one could argue that Shel's objectifying a living creature -- one that may soon be extinct! Rhinos are poached for their horn (among other things), after all, and the rhino in Silverstein's book is often used as an object.
But I don't think that's Silverstein's point; in fact, it's the exact opposite -- how fun to have a friend with whom you can play pirates and "good guy-bad guy" and all kinds of other fun pretend stuff and who will help you out just as you help him -- in short, a friend who is with you through thick and thin, good and bad. We should all be so lucky.
Two key lines that helped me survive college come from this book. "He is awfully good for yelling at . . ." is one, and I'm tearing up (really!) just remembering the line. It's not fair that our rhino friend be the brunt of our sadness or anger, but as a friend he's willing to take it. And then, immediately following, is the book's sweet ending: " . . . and he is easy to love." That's what human relationships are all about: sometimes we give of ourselves as little more than a foot stool; we try to protect the ones we love; sometimes we let our friends yell at us because they have stuff to get off their chest; and always, always, because we give of ourselves, we are easy to love.
I've written a lot into this (always do), but it's a simple book with some complex stuff lurking under the surface. I mean, all the great children's authors, from Frank Baum to Maurice Sendak to William Steig, write books that appeal to all ages -- kids take the story on a "surface" level, whereas adults (like me) read subtext into the story. Please don't be scared of this book!! Embrace it, just as you would a cheap rhinoceros. None of us are cheap, and that's just where Silverstein leads us.
Disapointing from a great author.......2002-09-11
This looks like another great Silverstein book saved from the obscurity of being first copyrighted in 1964, but perhaps it should have stayed there, as one particular page ruins the whole book. A rhino is good for many things, but I could never read to a young child that "he is great for not letting your mother hit you when you haven't really done anything bad."
Since mothers shouldn't be hitting their kids in their first place, and certainly not for no reason, I'm having trouble with this as appropriate to read to kids, especially when there are so many other great books to read instead.
