5 out of 5 stars very informative.......2007-10-01

This miniature horse book has all the info anyone would need. It tells you everything step by step. I knew nothing before I read it and now I feel as though I might know everything about a mini.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to get an overview on American Miniature Horses.......2006-04-29

This is a great book to purchase if you are looking at an overview of American Miniature Horses and what is involved with their care, upkeep and what one can do with these unique equines from keeping them as pets to having them as show animals.

It covers all topics with sound advice and handles even "sensitive" topics in the field with care without bias.

I have owned, bred and shown American Miniature Horses (AMHA and AMHR) since 1992 and have been involved with horses of various breeds for 37 years.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2006-03-29

I bought the book hoping to gain some additional insight into the world of showing & breeding mini horses. If you have been around the show ring at all and have some showing experience - especially in hand, then this is not the book for you. Clipping a bridle path is the same regardless of size of horse. It is this type of elementary subject material discussed in the book. As for breeding, the author recommends live cover as AI for mini's is almost non-existent. I believe you could gain more knowledge from the miniature horse registry than from this book.

If you have absolutely no experience around horses - then this book may be a great first read as the principles for care are the same for minis as it is the regular size horse.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for serious miniature horse enthusiasts.......2006-03-01

This is a great book for beginners and seasoned breeders alike. Heaps of information.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased...........2005-10-24

I recently purchased this book at a Mini Show and I am so glad I did.

I have horses, but not mini's. I am hoping to purchase a mini soon and this book was very informative. It has helped me to be able to ask the right questions about the mini I have been looking to buy. And it also helped me to see the differences between owning a mini and a regular horse.

If you are looking to purchase a mini and need more information to make an informed decision....this is the book for you...

2 out of 5 stars No color pictures.......2006-12-08

I just received this book. I find it quite outdated. The drawings and illustrations are poorly done. There are only a few black and white pictures. Just beware that this is a 1998 book and I am sure you can find a more updated horse book than this one.

4 out of 5 stars Absolute must for new horse-lovers!.......2006-10-05

If you're considering doing ANYTHING with a horse in it, get this book. It's by far the most complete book on basic horse health, stabling, activities, breeds, etc. (And I do mean "basic".) Would have been five-stars for a glossary.

Book Description

Trailers are a fact of life in the horse world. Sooner or later, everyone who owns a horse will have to deal with a horse trailer in order to haul to shows, races, hunts, and perhaps even to veterinary clinics. Up to now, when horse owners wanted information on trailers they had to rely on magazine articles or word-of-mouth recommendations. Not anymore. The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer is the first and only book for both owners and buyers of horse trailers. It's a resource that gives prospective buyers, faced with hundreds of models to choose from, the means to make the right choice. It's a manual that gives current owners information on maintaining and caring for their trailers. Foremost, they will learn from lifelong horsewoman Neva Scheve and Thomas G. Scheve, both respected industry insiders, that the safety and comfort of the horse should always be the primary concern. This authoritative book, with more than 175 illustrations, addresses a number of important topics, including how to: "Complete" is not just an idle word: this book has an appendix that gives the names and addresses of the major trailer manufacturers to contact for literature. In all, the Scheves have given horse owners everything they need to make an informed purchasing decision that will benefit themselves and their horses.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide to Buying, maintaing and servicing a horse trailer.......2007-09-18

the book itself is very informative and useful for a new trailer owner.
the disappointment that I feel is having the supplier say that the book is new and receive a new book but that has been scored from top to bottom on the front cover. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! i tried to contact the supplier but they apparently don't have a useful email address.

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-07-13

This book is well written. It gives lots of great information about horse trailers. I do wish there was more written about recommendations for the actual vehicles being used to pull the horse trailer.

5 out of 5 stars No Horse Hauler Should Leave Home Without It!.......2004-04-06

Even if you have trailered horses for years, you will still find this book to be a "must have." It will remind experienced horsemen of checklists to follow for safe towing, and give the new comer an insightful, useful tutelage on the ins and outs of buying and hauling. Ms. Schreve has thorough research and experience to back up her advice. Absolutely excellent advice on being fullly prepared for on-road emergencies!

5 out of 5 stars Many questions answered.......2001-12-02

I have started looking for my own trailer and this book has really answered a lot of questions that have been going through my mind as I have been shopping. It also has valuable information on the safty aspects for the horse. I have learned a lot and have been with horses for around five years. Highly recommend to anyone who currenly owns or is going to buy a trailer.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for every horse owner!.......2001-06-30

This books points out so many issues regarding trailers and horses that should be "common sense", but are overlooked by the majority of trailer manufactures and unknown to the majority of horse owners. It debunks many of the current trailer fads and supports its positions with strong research and fact.

After reading this book and recalling what I've seen in the past; I will not put my horses in half the trailers out there (including ones I've used in the past).

Every horse that is transported deserves the benefit of the knowledge and advice in this book. You owe it to your equine partner!

5 out of 5 stars Glad I found this book.......2007-05-13

I learned of this book title and author mentioned on the ASAP horse rescue website, and I'm very glad I did. A lot of careful thought goes into the decision to take on the lifelong commitment of adopting a rescued horse. This book brought up many easy to understand details I may not have considered properly before making a decision. Nothing speaks more clearly than experience. With all of the helpful references, it's a very useful and enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, what a great read!!!.......2007-03-04

I found this book extremely informative and an enjoyable read. The author obviously writes from experience and with a desire to encourage responsible horse ownership. She offers helpful advice for first horse owners and outlines the issues involved when taking on a horse in distress. For those of us with soft hearts and a lack of good sense, when it comes to an animal is trouble, this is a handy and humorous guide that will help us do the most good where it is desprately needed.

4 out of 5 stars Nicely Layed Out .......2007-01-23

This book complies basic information and is layed out well and a good starter book.. One thing I was disappointed is that it didn't really outline how to start up a Horse rescue but then again it didn't state that it did- A overall nice book !

5 out of 5 stars Saved me $$$$$$$ and heartache.......1999-05-07

I would have never thought of all of these issues when buying my first horse. After reading this book, I no longer felt apprehensive about going through the process and I was informed. The first two horses I looked at flunked the vet exam big time which I would have never discovered on my own. Also, I got excellent guidelines for how to take a test ride from reading Horse for Sale. This book tells it all and I thank the author for helping me find "Destiny".

Buying your first horse is a huge ordeal!!! Cherry Hill's book was incredibly helpful!! I learned so much from her book and it made me feel more confident about what to look for. I made informed and knowledgeable choices in buying my horse. I only wish that I would have read it sooner. I would highly recommend this book to any first time buyer/seller. Make an informed choice, read Ms. Hill's book.

She also reviews alternatives to purchasing, explaining toh details that should be considered in various types of transactions. An especially good resource for the first time horse owner. Very useful as well for the more experienced. Good suggestions succesful marketing of your own equine. I would highly recommend this to EVERYONE considering a horse or sale

2 out of 5 stars buying and reschooling ex-racehorses.......2000-01-13

the book had good information, kept my attention & was easy reading. I was disappointed that it did not cover what I would consider reschooling of ex-racehorses. It was a good introduction to beginning schooling over jumps for horses that are already trained for riding. The book is geared towards people that have a certain level of knowledge and would not necessarily be good for beginner trainers. I am still going to get Coldrey's first book Breaking and Training the Young Horse. Maybe Buying and Reschooling would have been better if I had read Breaking & Training the Young Horse first.

2 out of 5 stars very disappointing.......1999-04-26

I bought this book because I thought it would focus more on the special training an ex racehorse needs. This book contained mostly information on general horse training which intermediate to experienced riders/trainers probably already know. The begining of the book was the most interesting part because it gives the history of the thoroughbred breed. But, the rest of this book was pretty disappointing.

When I bought this book I honestly didn't think I'd ever read it, let alone read the entire thing. But I gave it a try and now I can't put it down. This is a complete book of everything you need to know about horses the best descriptions the easiest reading. Would buy any of Cheryl Kimball's books due to the easy reading content.
Excellant and fully descriptive. My daughter wants to be a horse handler and has had not experience with horses this is a great book that gives a complete guide for beginners.

Excellant service, communication and packaging. Have bought many books and would not hesitate to buy more.

3 out of 5 stars it's ok..........2006-08-14

When i first got this book i thought it was going to be much better. I thoroughly enjoyed it however. I am 14 years old and when i passed it down to my younger sister (who is 10) to read, she got bored really easily with it. It might be because she is just the type of person who bores easily, but there really is no motavation for someone of her age. there are very little pictures and is not written in a way which younger people understand

4 out of 5 stars Very good guide for caring for a horse.......2004-09-14

This is a good book for the person who doesn't own a horse yet but would like to sometime. It is very complete, going over stuff from hoof anatomy to how to introduce your horse to an electric fence for the first time. However, I think that Horses for Dummies by Audrey Pavia is even MORE complete and I liked that better, but overall this is a very, very good book.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good book...........2001-12-16

I think this is a great book for someone who owns a horse. Since I don't yet own one, I found it not as interesting as some horse books. It talks about trailering your horse, what to feed it, ect.... I still enjoyed it though, because I really like reading anything on horses. And someday since I'll be owning a horse someday (I hope!!), I think this book will come in handy. :)

Originator of the contemporary Dosage system, Steve Roman, Ph.D., has written the definitive book on the subject. Although originally devised as a breeding theory, Dosage has evolved into a pedigree classification technique used by owners, breeders and handicappers to buy, breed and bet on the best. Roman's research and development of the roster of chefs-de-race, those prepotent sires that have shaped the breed, has changed the way Thoroughbreds are bred, bought and sold.

    5 out of 5 stars Educational.......2007-03-08

This book was great, covered all the bases & was really unbias. The author wanted everyone to know how great owning horses is, but also how much work, time and effort must be put into their health and wellbeing. I defienetly feel prepared to own my own horse.

3 out of 5 stars Good common sense information.......2004-01-23

This book would be great for a preteen's first book about horse ownership, or for a first introduction to horse ownership. If you have already read anything else on the subject, you will probably find a lot of repeat information. There is good advice, but a lot of it is common sense.

1 out of 5 stars Out of focus and poorly written........2003-10-13

If this is the "Best book on the topic...", then it must be the only one! Luckily that is not the case, as there are many really good books available on this subject.

This rambling work just glosses over each subject that it attempts to address. It doesn't settle in on anything specific. The reader is never able to get a real idea of what they would be getting into when buying their first horse.

The writers should have made a few assumptions at the beginning, such as this book is for the average person buying their first horse, which will be relatively inexpensive and used for basic riding. Since they did not focus on anything specific, the book has no real direction or purpose. Reading it is like looking through someone else's glasses - after a few minutes your eyes kind of go blurry and start to water.

For example, there is a table that gives average costs per year of owning a horse, and under the heading "Tack" it gives annual costs from $500 - $10,000! Is this book trying to cover everyone from a 15-year old kid doing 4H to the King of Persia? Plus, don't horses eat? The table on what to expect to shell out in a year for horse costs doesn't even include the cost for feed. The total annual costs are listed as anywhere from $3520 to $25,800.

Is the average Joe, about to go out to buy their first horse, really going to budget $25,000 a year for a horse? I don't think so. Who is this book written for?

You start to almost get mad that you even wasted your time once you read this book. Then it gets kind of entertaining, because there are so many mistakes, that I found it hard to believe that I was reading a published work, and not a rough draft. There are sentences that start and then just end in the middle. One sentence had the word "so" when they meant to use "do". There are so many grammatical and typographical errors that it makes you wonder if the authors even read it!

The last section of the book is entitled "Buyer Beware!" I think that about sums it up. I'm just glad that we got it for free at the library.

    4 out of 5 stars HORSE TRAINER.......2003-07-05

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR THE FIRST TIME HORSE OWNER. I HAND IT OUT TO ANY AND EVERYONE TO ASK ME ABOUT OWNING A HORSE.

1 out of 5 stars full of misinformation.......2003-05-11

as I started to read this book I thought, OK, not a lot of detail but a good overview. The more I read the more obvious it was that the authors were providing some very inacccurate and predjudicial information. Readers of this book are presented with a narrow view of an expansive subject.

Some of the glaring misinformation: "In the United States, a negative Coggins test is required for any horse bought or sold, raced, shown or crossing state lines." Complete misuse of the terms "linebreeding" and "inbred" as well as comment that purebred horses have "faults due to inbreeding" The term "nuetered" is not used regarding horses. Male or female. Castration is the proper term for explaining the gelding of a male horse. "Stallions. . . are hard to manage and dangerous". "A stallion near a mare in season is dangerous" both comments are grossly inaccurate. A stallion is not a suitable horse for a beginner or first time buyer, but they are not dangerous or hard to manange simply because they are stallions. Similar inaccurate statements were made about mares "in estrous". Also untrue.

This is the kind of book presented to beginners and first time horse buyers who have no way of knowing better, things as fact that are not, because it is written by so-called experts. My impression of the book is that is was written by someone who pieced together information from other sources and without proofreading by qualified horsepeople.
