5 out of 5 stars Hands down, the best foaling attendant book.......2007-07-22

As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good information, but..........2007-05-15

I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book....Answered lots of questions.......2007-03-26

This book was shipped quickly and just in time....I had about 5 reading days before my first foal was born. I highly recommend this book to all breeders.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Book Of Foaling.......2007-02-11

5 out of 5 stars A gift for my Father.......2007-02-08

My Father liked the book very much. Could not stop reading it. He is buying a copy for my brother who actually does the foaling at the horse farm.

4 out of 5 stars complete guide for horse business success by Janet English.......2000-04-16

This guide provides most of the nesscesary tools and tips to start your own horse business. Providing information that allows one to confidently pursue this venture. This book gave me the confidence to proceed with my business knowing all the facts up front. It allowed me to handle purchases and tax formalities without feeling like I didn't know what I was doing. Great starter book! I have read "starting you own horse business" by Mary Ashby Mcdonald. While her book is informative and gives examples not covered in the previous book, it serves basically to complement other books on this issue.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of what can be done for your horse........2007-06-08

This book serves as a wonderful reference for the health of my equines. It gives very descriptive things that can be done. Recently when my warmblood foundered, I found the suggestions very helpful and empowering. I got to implement some of them right away and therefore made my girl more comfortable in this hard situation. I highly recommend this book as it takes the mystery out of many different approaches of equine care and gives one the opportunity to make informed, well thought out choices.

5 out of 5 stars Happy for the paperback.......2007-01-21

I own the hardback edition of this book and am very pleased the paperback edition has arrived. Sent it to a good friend looking for the pressure points of the horse, which Mary does a great job of showing in the sketches provided. This is the best alternative medicine book I have found for the horse.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-09

As I am coming into more holistic approaches to life, I have found this book to be a Bible!! As it covers so many topics, giving guidance to directions for all of us, I can easily understand the value of this book!! Amust for all readers who want to keep their Equine healthy and sound --Naturally!!

5 out of 5 stars Complete Holistic Care.... Brennan/Eckroate: a review.......2001-09-23

This comprehensive volume addresses dozens of concerns for the horse owner, covering traditional and alternative health practices. The book is very complete in covering the health care options in two sections. The first part dealing with health care is an overview of traditional and holistic options. The final section of the volume is a comprehensive listing (with photos) of typical horse ailments with specific recommendations for each one. The entire book is written in a style easily understandable by the novice, but not too simplistic for the experienced horse owner. Photos and very complete appendices round out the coverage for this topic. Additionally, Brennan includes a comprehensive horse management section which is equally impressive in its scope, covering topics such as diet, grooming, tack and trailering. This book is truly a "must have" for the concerned horse owner.

2 out of 5 stars No color pictures.......2006-12-08

I just received this book. I find it quite outdated. The drawings and illustrations are poorly done. There are only a few black and white pictures. Just beware that this is a 1998 book and I am sure you can find a more updated horse book than this one.

4 out of 5 stars Absolute must for new horse-lovers!.......2006-10-05

If you're considering doing ANYTHING with a horse in it, get this book. It's by far the most complete book on basic horse health, stabling, activities, breeds, etc. (And I do mean "basic".) Would have been five-stars for a glossary.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2006-11-03

Ainslie breaks down several factors that should be looked at when analyzing a race - speed, pace, trainer, class, form, etc. His writing style is great, the info is great, and it is a great primer for anyone just getting into the sport or wanting to improve their skills. Some of the jockey/trainer info is a little outdated, but I refer to the book often. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Still a classic.......2006-01-06

What an eye opener it was when I stumbled on this fifteen years ago! Some of the material is dated, but the fundamentals are well covered and still relevant. Still a terriffic primer for someone wanting to learn the game.

4 out of 5 stars Dated, but worth mining through..........2005-02-24

Let's start with the obvious. Ainslie wrote in a different time: before exotic wagering, which he considered a gimmick, became 70+% of the daily handle. His specific advice about WPS betting and money management, as a result, should be discarded. Likewise, his advice about which trainers and jocks to follow has aged poorly.

At the same time, there's information in here that's invaluable, such as the sections on understanding trainer intent, and on post parade and paddock behavior.

This book has a special place in the history of handicapping, and for that reason alone, is worth having, but in the modern player's arsenal, it should be an added coloring and not the central philosophy.

5 out of 5 stars The Horseracing Information Bible.......2004-12-28

I had read nearly a dozen books on horserace handicapping before I read Ainslie's book. This should have been the first book on horseracing that I read. Ainslie covers every aspect of handicapping and the racing game imaginable. He writes in a simple, concise, easy style -- easy on the eyes, easy to absorb.

It is well-organized. Each chapter covers a specific aspect of the game. Perhaps what I enjoyed the most (and have put to good use) is Ainslie's 60 item list on how to handicap a race --what to look for: angles to be aware of in class, form; speed; jockey/trainer angles .. and on and on and on. The beauty of this book is that the reaader is exposed to so many different topics and subject areas that he will able to find his nich, his own style in handicapping. If you are like me, after you read this book, you will have a list of several more books that you will simply have to have. Thanks to Ainslie.

Ainslie doesn't tout any particular handicapping style; he simply informs the reader of all the many different angles there are instantly adding to the reader's knowledge of the game and providing instant improvement to his handicapping. This is the racing book you would keep on your bedside table; this is the book that you will be referring back to time and time again -- there is that much in this book. Tell you one thing, I envy Ainslie's friends who are able to get tips and suggestions from the author.

If the reader is buying this book in paperback, perhaps he should buy two copies. Surely, he will wear this book out. I have.

5 out of 5 stars Once the best...Still the best.......2004-05-22

Some things don't change. Horses still have four legs. And Tom Ainslie still reigns as the Triple Crown Champion of handicappers. Forget the Beyer speed figure
and pace gurus and go with the fundamentals. You'll also be treated to cogent
and lucid prose, a rarity in racing books. This is The Bible, both Old Testament and
New.

I really liked the first 2 sections, Keeping your horse healthy and the Anatomical Index of Diseases. I wish the A-z sections describing different disease was a little more in-depth. Its a little more general than I wanted but still a very very knowledgable book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Horse Sense.......2007-01-09

This is the first book I have come across that treats the whole range of what one might come across in being owned by a horse and what to do should they need help. There are of course some points not picked up amongst them the Connemara Pony which has been accepted into the thoroughbreds, and which are a delight to own, being half Arab and half or less West Irish bog ponies (from the Spanish Armada). Very good detail and sage advice and the how tos' included, a present for my Grandchild who is studying for Veterinarian

3 out of 5 stars good reference book, but..........2005-09-27

Being a new horse owner, I found this book somewhat helpful. A multitude of horse illnesses, injuries and conditions are described in an easy to understand language making it a good reference book.
However, this book would have been greatly improved if there were photos of each of the conditions described (there are none).
It also would have been helpful if there were an index to look up conditions by their major or most common symptoms, something a horse owner can reference if their horse is ill or injured.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice informative book.......2004-10-22

I have to disagree with the review from Guatemala. This book is not intended to make you a vet but to let you understand enough so you, your vet, and your horse can have intelligent interaction. To his specific gripe about dewormers I disagree. Just giving a dewormer without knowing what you are deworming for is wrong. Even for humans a stool sample is lab tested to know exactly what to treat....you'd do less for your horse? This book is exceptional in that it talks to you with the minimal of medical jargon and what is used is explained. I do agree with his review about getting the other book. Both are twins and compliment each other well. I would reccommend you get both.

2 out of 5 stars Not specific enough.......2000-04-22

I found this book to be good for novices, but it lacks in-depth information about treatment. For instance, under parasite control it says "talk to your veterinarian" No list of common wormers, their activity, safety and recommended dosing schedule. At least here in Guatemala, the vet prefers for you to participate in the possible diagnoses and treatment options to make an informed decision. This book leaves me in the cold. I recommend you check out Dr. Giffin's manual for horse owners - much more detailed.

5 out of 5 stars A book of information for anyone.......2000-02-02

This book is quite useful with an emphasis on the health and care of the horse. Essentially, it is a collection of articles written by veterinarians and other horse oriented people from the vet school. Reproduction takes up almost 150 pages. Other large topics covered include nutrition, diseases and disorders, and care. Other topics such as vaccinations, selection, transportation, breeds, and behavior. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone, since the articles cover information that horse owners should be aware of (such as the extensive disease articles), but might not be entirely educated about.

Book Description

Trailers are a fact of life in the horse world. Sooner or later, everyone who owns a horse will have to deal with a horse trailer in order to haul to shows, races, hunts, and perhaps even to veterinary clinics. Up to now, when horse owners wanted information on trailers they had to rely on magazine articles or word-of-mouth recommendations. Not anymore. The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer is the first and only book for both owners and buyers of horse trailers. It's a resource that gives prospective buyers, faced with hundreds of models to choose from, the means to make the right choice. It's a manual that gives current owners information on maintaining and caring for their trailers. Foremost, they will learn from lifelong horsewoman Neva Scheve and Thomas G. Scheve, both respected industry insiders, that the safety and comfort of the horse should always be the primary concern. This authoritative book, with more than 175 illustrations, addresses a number of important topics, including how to: "Complete" is not just an idle word: this book has an appendix that gives the names and addresses of the major trailer manufacturers to contact for literature. In all, the Scheves have given horse owners everything they need to make an informed purchasing decision that will benefit themselves and their horses.

2 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide to Buying, maintaing and servicing a horse trailer.......2007-09-18

the book itself is very informative and useful for a new trailer owner.
the disappointment that I feel is having the supplier say that the book is new and receive a new book but that has been scored from top to bottom on the front cover. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! i tried to contact the supplier but they apparently don't have a useful email address.

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-07-13

This book is well written. It gives lots of great information about horse trailers. I do wish there was more written about recommendations for the actual vehicles being used to pull the horse trailer.

5 out of 5 stars No Horse Hauler Should Leave Home Without It!.......2004-04-06

Even if you have trailered horses for years, you will still find this book to be a "must have." It will remind experienced horsemen of checklists to follow for safe towing, and give the new comer an insightful, useful tutelage on the ins and outs of buying and hauling. Ms. Schreve has thorough research and experience to back up her advice. Absolutely excellent advice on being fullly prepared for on-road emergencies!

5 out of 5 stars Many questions answered.......2001-12-02

I have started looking for my own trailer and this book has really answered a lot of questions that have been going through my mind as I have been shopping. It also has valuable information on the safty aspects for the horse. I have learned a lot and have been with horses for around five years. Highly recommend to anyone who currenly owns or is going to buy a trailer.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for every horse owner!.......2001-06-30

This books points out so many issues regarding trailers and horses that should be "common sense", but are overlooked by the majority of trailer manufactures and unknown to the majority of horse owners. It debunks many of the current trailer fads and supports its positions with strong research and fact.

After reading this book and recalling what I've seen in the past; I will not put my horses in half the trailers out there (including ones I've used in the past).

Every horse that is transported deserves the benefit of the knowledge and advice in this book. You owe it to your equine partner!

Whether you're saddled and ready for the dynamic new sport of endurance riding, or more content to lope down a pretty country lane, this thorough guide provides plenty of updated information to keep horse and rider on the right path. While it's most suited to the endurance rider, the author covers training procedures (conditioning, feeding, equipment) that are also useful to noncompetitive equestrians. Photos, drawings, and charts accompany the straightforward text.

    Book Description

First Star to the Right and Straight on Till Morning.... At the 90-mile vet check she sat in the middle of the road crying, claiming extreme illness and trying to avoid her nightmarish fears her horse would die of founder or colic, or anything. The last ten miles of trail stretched forever in her mind, black like licorice taffy. After a large measure of TLC from her patient and understanding crew, she and the gelding were out of the check and on the trail again. The entire universe shrank to center on the pair in the moonlight. Time stopped and the world faded into nothingness. They were running in a small, ever-changing pocket of existence, the rhythm of his hooves, the heartbeat of that universe. Ribbons and trail appeared before them and lost substance as they moved past. For the rider, clinging to the saddle, there was no thought, no pain, no emotion, only the instinctive drive to chase past each ribbon as it appeared. Suddenly her horse jumped sideways, eyes and ears frozen forward. Awakened from her trance, she oriented herself on his suspected woods troll, a familiar embankment that meant they were a half-mile from home. Easing him past the scary object, she sent the gelding on, clinging to his neck. As his soft lope swept them across the finish line, she wanted to laugh out loud or cry, but was unable to summon the strength for either. A few small tears trickled down her cheek, the only sign of the enormous pride she felt inside. Becky Huffman Endurance rider, wife, mother of two, and student of author Donna Snyder-Smith

4 out of 5 stars Good info, some gaps........2003-01-17

This book has some really great pieces of information and I have shared it happily with my barn-mates. The author is somewhat brief in spots, and I finished it feeling like there were gaps in my knowledge that I needed to get other books to fill. I understand that everything about endurance riding cannot be covered in one tome, but I wish she had shared more of her obviously large bank of knowledge. Good ideas and great perspectives are sometimes hidden in sections where they don't belong, so read carefully.

5 out of 5 stars Read and Live (comfortably).......2000-07-13

I trained with the Ms. Snyder-Smith and worked with Ms. Kanavy in a week long clinic, and I can say unequivocally that the two practice all they talk about in the book. If you want to learn the basics of endurance riding, horse and human biomechanics, and just soak up some real state of the art saavy, Donna Snyder Smith and Valerie Kanavy are the ticket!

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Every Rider.......2000-04-25

This book gives a good, solid foundation to the sport of endurance riding, and for every rider who wants a horse at its' prime. I am just starting in the sport and this book tells you where to start and how to prime your horse and get it ready for the competitions ahead. Through this book, I have broadened my knowledge of both the sport and how to work with a horse to get it in its best condition. The author includes valuable tips, exercises and pictures which demonstrate what you need and how to use them. I highly suggest this book for anyone interested in getting started with endurance riding.

4 out of 5 stars How to ride far and fast on a healthy horse.......1998-07-10

Want to feel good, cover a lot of ground, and enjoy a real sense of accomplishment? And spend a lot of time with your horse? Then read this book. Endurance riding (strictly speaking, going 50-100 miles a day across the countryside for 1-5 days on or with your horse) should not be attempted unless you and your horse have some basic training, including physical conditioning, but with the right approach almost anyone can do it. Donna shows you how, from basics to true competition (not only how to reach the finish line in one piece but how to be one of the first arrivals on a horse that is ready and able to keep going). There are a number of books offering advice on endurance riding, and most provide valuable information, but I find this one the best starting point. Besides covering the fundamentals found in almost every endurance book, Donna offers exercises for you and your horse that help you both to finish without being cramped, exhausted or otherwise unfit to continue (I can testify to this!). She also injects many nuggets of wisdom from her extensive personal experience. Finally, the format includes many helpful diagrams, illustrations, photos, boxes, summaries, lists and references that get the necessary concepts across much better than plain words in a paragraph, which makes for easier reading and quicker comprehension. My only complaint is that the book is too big to fit in my saddlebag.
