It's every pet owner's nightmare: suddenly your four-legged friend isn't breathing. What to do? There is no 911 for pets, so it's up to you to save a life. The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats is a straightforward guide that covers both major problems--CPR, heat stroke, and strangulation--and minor ones, such as swollen tails, ingrown nails, and flea allergies. Beginning with simple tests and explanations of general care issues like dehydration examinations and triage, this guide then moves on to an alphabetical listing of every possible situation, from arrow wounds to worms.

The individual sections are good for both general reading and instant assistance. Each one starts with a notice of when to call the vet--immediately, the same day, or as needed. It also lists what items from your pet's medicine chest will be needed, which may include anything from corn syrup to towels and panty hose. The information that follows this simple checklist is divided into "do this now," "special situations," "follow-up care," and "the best approach." Whenever necessary, simple sketches are included to help show proper technique, such as fashioning an instant muzzle from a pair of nylons, or how to cover a dog's head in case of an ear-flap injury. Relying frequently on common household items like antihistamines, turkey basters, Gatorade, and plastic wrap, this guide assumes most of us won't have special medical training or supplies and focuses on very specific and simple methods of helping your pet achieve the best possible care. Even more importantly, many suggestions are included on prevention of accidents--isn't it easier to get that window screen repaired than to rush your kitty to the vet after a bad fall?--Jill Lightner

This is a wonderful movie. Exquisitely executed in period costume, with a world class orchestra. It was delightfully free of uneccessary verbage and saturated with eroticism. Sandra

5 out of 5 stars I found this book a must-have for pet professionals.......2007-07-12

I own Animal Companions pet sitting service in Houston, Texas, and I found this book a must-have for pet professionals. Laid out in a format similar to a Physician's Desk Reference, you may easily and quickly (and time is always of the essence with a sick pet!) look up information based on presenting symptoms.

It is an amazing supplement to hands-on first aid training. I immediately purchased a copy of this book for myself and each of my employees, to keep in our cars right next to our pet first aid kit. I also picked up a copy to keep at home, for my own furry loved ones.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Mini-Encyclopedia of Pet Care.......2007-07-03

There is so much useful information in just this one volume. What's more, there is a symptom finder, allowing a quick overview of possible causes of given symptoms among dogs and cats. There are two tables of poison hazards, including one which tells what human medications should never be given to cats (although veterinarians advise that no human medications should ever be given to animals without checking with them). The animal conditions that can be helped by first aid range from life-threatening situations to such usually-minor things as constipation in cats. There are many helpful diagrams. One of them shows how to make a homemade Elizabethan collar and another one shows how to restrain a seriously-injured animal for the trip to the vet.

5 out of 5 stars Good reading, good addition to your medicine cabinet........2007-02-07

We had dogs bitten by a rattlesnake. I had a dog with an allergic reaction.

What do you do? Sure, you can google up an answer, but it's nice to have this book on hand for quick reference.

It is well written and you can actually just read it cover to cover. I learned a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source.......2006-11-08

I got this book to better care for my adult and senior dogs. I love that the book not only focuses on First Aid but prevention as well as recommendations for when to call the vet. The injuries and illnesses section covers everything you can think of and provides lots of background information as well as treatment. My favorite feature is the recommended medicine chest as well as dosing.

5 out of 5 stars Every dog owner should have this book.......2002-08-11

"First Aid for Dogs" was one of three similar books I bought and is clearly the best, by a head and shoulders margin. It has almost 200 pages of information about a variety of conditions that can occur at home, in the neighborhood, or in the field. It makes very clear what to look for (symptoms) and then gives a helpful "decision tree" (if this is present, then do or look for ---; if that is not present, then look for or do ---). It is also very clear about what options you have in contacting a vet: Now! Same day. Within 24 hrs. Soon. Phone for advice.

It very clearly tells how to check symptoms. It covers almost every imaginable condition a dog owner would usually encounter. In the money it will save in trips to the vet that weren't needed, using this book will save its cost many times over.

The book is very well organized into sections, Part 1, What to do first, how to make splints, etc,; Part 2, What to do next, checking symptoms, what to observe; Part 3, First aid for various emergencies; Part 4, improving health, how to give/apply meds. The line drawing illustrations are simple, clear, and helpful. The index is comprehensive and useful.

By comparison, one of the other books I bought (published by a university press and written by vet school faculty), is higher priced, has about one fourth the pages, and contains much less than a twentieth the information. "Always have injuries examined by a veterinarian" is neither sufficient or particularly helpful advice. For poisoning, it recommends "veterinary advice should be sought."

The third first aid book I bought was for outdoor dogs (I have a Lab). It has a little less than half the pages that Fogle's book contains. The topics it covers are adequately treated but I've found nothing covered that is not also in Fogle's book.

When my wife, Amy, and I bought Sparky, our pet pekinese, we picked up this book, though we hoped to never need it. It was so clearly written and easy to use that the entire family read it. When our oldest son, Ryan, used it to save Sparky from choking on peanut butter, we realized just how valuable the advice in this book is. Thank you, Bruce and Amanda, for saving our dog's life.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable reference book for dog and cat owners.......2002-07-23

The second worst thing that can happen to your pet is for him to get sick or hurt; the truly worst thing is for you as the pet owner to be totally unprepared when accident or misfortune strikes. This book covers all the basics of first aid care for dogs and cats, from cuts and bee stings to convulsions, choking, and traumatic, life-threatening injuries. Steps to take in any given situation are laid out one at a time, and a number of very helpful illustrations make all of the information as direct and understandable as it can be. The book is arranged alphabetically by first aid topic, so you can always find the information you need quickly and easily. You really don't even have to read the book. Just having it close at hand when something happens to your pet can make a real difference; it can even help save your loyal companion's life. I would recommend reading the book, though, or at least glancing through it. You can learn important warning signs to watch for in your pet's behavior and help catch a problem in its early stages. In cases of real emergency, knowing what not to do can be just as important as knowing what you should do. You would do well to follow the precautionary suggestions the book describes--putting together a pet first aid kit, for example. By no means can or should this book take the place of professional veterinary care, a point which the text emphasizes, but it can help keep your pet healthy and happy.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any pet lover........1999-07-20

This book is a great help to me when my pets have any bumps or scratches. It is a wonderful source of first aid information that any pet lover should have.

5 out of 5 stars Pet book is paws up.......1997-10-21

This book is so helpful. I think every dog and cat owner should have one. It is so easy to use and can save yourself a lot of money in Vet visits if you're like me and worry about every little thing that might be wrong with your 'baby." I like the glossary and illustrations. I'm getting one as a Christmas gift for all the dog owners in my family. You can't beat it for $8.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference volume by public health veterinarian.......1997-07-15

I couldn't agree more with the previous comment. I would only add that Dr. Bobbie Mammato, the author, conveys her wealth of experience in emergency veterinary care and public health, and makes this an extremely readable and useful text. In fact, why isn't Dr. Mammato credited as the author on your Web site

5 out of 5 stars A must for every family with a cat or dog!.......1997-07-03

Would you know what to do if your cat or dog had an emergency? I worked on the book so I'm biased, but... "Pet First Aid" may help save your pet's life! From the American Red Cross, the nation's largest humanitarian organization, and The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal protection organization. All proceeds support the efforts of both non-profit organizations. Makes a great gift for everyone you know that owns a cat or dog.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2005-06-17

This was a very useful book and I keep it inside a hunting back pack at all times. This book is definitely worth adding to your canine related library. Along with a quality first aid kit!

5 out of 5 stars For the camping, hiking, traveling, hunting, outdoor dog!.......2000-09-06

Being a nurse, I take the proverbial "be prepared" to extremes, but when you are camping hundreds of miles away from the nearest emergency health care facility, you must be educated to handle most emergencies of your family members.

Well, DON"T FORGET THE DOG

We just adopted a wonderful black labrador, and being a busy outdoor kind of family I needed a concise, handy, well rounded emergency care manual for my little boy, Abbott. I researched and decided on this pocket field guide that is perfect for carrying on your outdoor excursions. I am pleased with the content and find the directions easy to follow, even for a lay person uneducated in medicine.

Hopefully, my dog will never need emergent care, but I feel better knowing and gathering the knowledge needed to be there for him if the need becomes reality. Buy this book and put together a first aid kit for your dog. His life could depend on it.

5 out of 5 stars The best, clearest, most useful first aid book out there........1999-08-31

I've reviewed many first aid books in my search. This is the clearest, most practical canine first aid book I've found. Most books read "take dog to nearest vet", this isn't always possible and this book covers what to do in those situations using clear text and precise pictures. Essential for anyone who takes their dog anywhere (even those dogs who just go to the park and back), but essential for dogs who go hiking, camping, travelling, kayaking, etc with their humans; anywhere you wouldn't be able to reach a vet within 20 minutes. Keep one in your car's glove box, the dog's backpack (along with a portable first aid kit), and one at home.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference for hunting, fishing, camping, hiking!.......1999-04-03

This is excellent to have for emergencies and general knowledge of what to do when an injury occurs. Very usefull!

    Book Description

When something's wrong with your pet, you need to know what to do -- now!

Your dog is limping. He's suddenly drooling heavily without any apparent cause. She's scratched herself raw -- and she's on a good flea-preventive. He's started vomiting. She's inexplicably losing weight. His ears smell funny. What's wrong with your dog -- and what should you be doing about it? In What's Wrong with My Dog?, acclaimed vet Jake Tedaldi, DVM, gives you the answers. More than a first-aid book but as easy to follow and use, What's Wrong with My Dog? is organized by symptom. Each of the 150 symptoms is clearly described (and illustrated if needed). Once dog owners have keyed out their pet's problem using the Symptom Finder at the front of the book, they can turn to the relevant pages and quickly verify their pet's problem, see what's causing it, and determine what they should do. They'll find clear explanations (again supplemented by illustrations if needed) of how to treat their dogs, whether they need to take the dog to the vet or to an emergency care clinic, if their dog will get better without supplemental care, and what they should do long-term to prevent the problem from happening again. Remedies cover a broad spectrum, from cutting-edge conventional medicine to alternative therapies to home remedies that really work. There's even a section on putting together a home first-aid kit for your dog. Indexes by symptom and by problem provide quick reference.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Well written.......2007-10-11

This is a Tuft's-trained vet that cuts to the chase on how to care for your ailing dog. I think that this works much in the same way as a good first-aid book would. No dog owner should be without it and all dog owners would benefit from reading it. After all, you want to know more before taking your puppy to the vet. This book does just that.

5 out of 5 stars The missing guide to having a dog has finally been found.......2007-09-01

I have had a dog since 1992 and have often searched for a book to consult when my dog seems a little "off," acts a little sick, gets a little hurt -- especially because it typically costs $150 to $200 just to visit a vet, and then if a bunch of tests are performed, the bill grows. Hundreds or thousands of dollars later, you are told that everything is going to be okay. Or worse, I don't go to the vet right away when my dog has had a little something wrong for a while that I ignored because I thought it was "no big deal" etc. and I could not identify a book or a website that gave me any productive information.

Instead, I found many books over the years that (1) provide a few pages of information that are applicable to my dog, and me or (2) provide me with indecipherable technical information suitable for veterinary student. For some reason there has never been any book in which the ENTIRE book is useful and understandable and applicable to my dog or my friends' dogs. Even an online search reveals the same polar extremes of information, unless you are "feeling lucky," which I never am. Perhaps this is because some vets rely on those stupid little questions that turn out to be nothing for their income or they are just a little too cautious, or they understandably don't want to give advice over the phone without seeing your dog? (I don't know the answer.)

However! When I discovered What's Wrong with My Dog?, I thought to myself: "This is the book I've been looking for--for more than 15 years!!! I love it. It's easy to read, written with a sense of humor, AND totally provides professional advice from an ACTUAL VET who was willing to potentially give up some easy office visits to provide dog owners with answers to simple questions. Oh, but apparently, he doesn't have an office; he makes house calls (you'll see his mode of transport in a picture in the back of the book. If I said words like "hoot," I would say it is one!). So...maybe he was hoping to avoid a few extra trips??? I don't know, but it was a generous endeavor--a gift of accessible information. Thank you, Dr. Tedaldi, for finally writing this book.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Kids CPR Book Available!.......2004-02-12

Craig Jones does a wonderful job of writing and illustrating this book. There need to be more activities these days that parents and kids can do together, and this is one of them. These books get kids interested in learning, and excited about it! As a bonus, you and your child can learn animal CPR, in the unlikely event anything happens to your beloved "family member." A recommended book for all!
