Book Description
For the woman more accustomed to singing Missoni's praises than singing lullabies comes Amy Allen's irresistible This Little Piggy Went to Prada: Nursery Rhymes for the Blahnik Brigade. Filled from cover to cover with sumptuous full color illustrations by Eun-Kyung Kung, This Little Piggy Went to Prada presents classic nursery rhymes with a thoroughly modern and charmingly ironic spin that will make the most sleepless fashionista mom smile, even when she's knee-deep in diapers.
Customer Reviews:
So Cute!.......2007-09-13
Gorgeous illustrations. Witty little fashionista takes on traditional nursery rhymes. Too short and not something i'd recommend to be read to children, but gorgeous for the fashion lover at heart.
Glorious!.......2007-07-26
I received this book as a gift when my third child was born.
It is spectacular and wonderfully witty. My personal belief is that the reviews that cite it as mediocre and such are missing the point - this is a book that is fun for mom *and* fun for the kiddies.
You won't find duckies and bunnies here - but you will find a wonderful play on nursery classics that appeals to the fashion-loving mom and her hip kiddos.
And yes, the author is British. Therefore some of the references are British - makes perfect sense to me. That added a welcome level of complexity to the discussion with my 4 year old about how certain words in the same language might be used differently in different places.
I love this book - and I know many adults sans kiddos who would love it as well.
Prada Pigglies!.......2007-06-28
Such a cute book! The Mommy-to-Be is such a diva and loved it! Absolutely fabulous!
Mediocre.......2007-05-14
I thought it would be cute to have around b/c its a different take on classic nursery rhymes. I also thought the book would be more suitabe for children for some reason...but it was a bit materialistic for my tastes and not what I want my child focused on.
great funny.......2007-04-04
easy to read, kids love it and have a good laugh at what they do understand.beautiful keepsake.
Book Description
Rat, Pig, Zebra, and Goat, the central characters of Pearls Before Swine, are back in their new book, Sgt. Piggy's Lonely Hearts Club Comic, the first Pearls Before Swine treasury-supersized for your enjoyment. But this is no ordinary cartoon treasury. Like the influential Beatles album that inspired the book's title, Sgt. Piggy is full of surprises. In addition to collecting in one volume all of the Pearls cartoons that appeared in BLTs Taste So Darn Good and This Little Piggy Stayed Home, cartoonist Stephan Pastis takes readers on a VIP backstage tour of one of the most successful new comic strips in newspapers today. In Sgt. Piggy, Pastis explains the genesis of Pearls (hint: it didn't begin at an artist's easel), why he was initially reluctant to show it to newspaper syndicates (and the surprising reason he changed his mind), the unexpected responses from readers to his work (oh, the letters), which Pearls strips worked and which ones didn't (and how he would have corrected the ones that didn't). The result is a rare and revealing glimpse into the world of Rat and Pig, Goat and Zebra. Full of humor and insight, sardonic asides and unexpected truths, Sgt. Piggy's Lonely Hearts Club Comic is a book that comics fans everywhere can enjoy anytime-even when they're 64.
Customer Reviews:
Totally Awesome!.......2007-05-30
I've been a Pearls Before Swine fan for a while, and I love this book! The comics are funny and realistic (rather), though a bit dark. But it's still worthwhile. I like how Stephan Pastis puts little comments under some comics. It's nice to see some insight from the author. The beginning is good as well, with Pastis telling how he got into the comic business. Overall, I highly recommend this book to Pearls Before Swine fans, and to anyone looking for a funny (but not always happy) comic.
Great book!.......2007-05-03
I always start my mornings out with a nice healthy strip of Pearls. This first Pearls treasury is a must for all fans! It contains all the strips from the first two books (BLTs Taste So Darn Good, This Little Piggy Stayed Home), but the Sundays are in color and Pastis even includes some personal comments for select strips. The comments offer a different way to look at the strip, giving insight to what the author was thinking or how the audience reacted to the strip.
Best Comic Strip Out There.......2007-01-24
The first Pearls comic I've ever saw was the strip where Pig made Fidel Castro cry and I've been hooked ever since. I've had this collection for about a year and it still makes me laugh. A great gift for friends or yourself, an instant classic.
Hilarious!.......2007-01-20
This book is fantastic. I am a Pearls reader, but anyone with a dry, sardonic sense of humor will like it. For Pearls fans, it has an introduction and bonus comments by the author, which are illuminating and very interesting. I laughed out loud at least fifty times while reading it, then I bought it for my brother, too. Highest recommendation!
See my review of Lions & Tigers & Crocs .......2007-01-05
The second (or first, I forget which) anthology of PBS and I loved it.
I have the strip about women and shoes posted on the fridge so my wife can see it every day. It hasn't stopped her from buying shoes but it makes me laugh every morning.
Book Description
Pearls Before Swine is an impressive comic strip success story. In syndication for less than two years, it currently appears in more than 150 newspapers worldwide, was nominated as Best Newspaper Comic Strip by the National Cartoonists Society in its debut year-an unprecedented achievement-and its first book collection, BLTs Taste So Darn Good, has sold through four printings. This Little Piggy Stayed Home continues the adventures of Rat and Pig, who couldn't be more different-or more surprising. Rat is your typical Everyrodent: scheming, self-centered, and more than occasionally manipulative. By contrast, Pig is sensitive, kindly, and-even on his best days-just plain stupid. Together with Zebra and Goat, they confront the strange and wonderful world around them, a place that looks suspiciously like our own. By turns thoughtful and subversive, silly and sophisticated, This Little Piggy Stayed Home is one of the funniest comic collections of the year
Customer Reviews:
Good, but the same comics.......2007-09-09
This book was very good, but it had the same comics as another of Stephan Pastis' books, "Sgt. Piggy's Lonely Hearts Club Comic". So if you already have that, don't get this.
Little Piggy.......2007-01-10
As always the Pearls cast is entertaining. Pearls is only for those who appreciate Pastis' humor.
WORST COLLECTION EVER..........2005-04-24
This is the greatest collection ever!Everything is so funny, and they have a rat.True, pure classics. They are unlike the junk in other strips like 'Family Circus','Rose is Rose','Dr. Drake',and 'Marmaduke'.This almost matches the cuteness of bats.
Funny stuff from a weird (in a good way) mind.......2004-07-08
Pastis will go to ANY length to set up what would normally be a semi-lame word play; it ends up being great. He also is the master of writing conversations where each participant consistently misunderstands the other to humorous effect.
Rat is funniest at his most threatening. He tells the neighbor to get rid of the kumquats on his lawn--or face Rat's secondhand Soviet missile. Pig is funny just being Pig--only dimly aware of the reality around him. And Zebra's interactions with various potential predators is hilarious. Great book; buy it!
Good stuff........2004-06-25
This is an enjoyable read. PBS is quickly becoming the second-best new strip in the newspaper -- behind the sublime "Pooch Cafe."

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-01-03
My son loves this book. He received it for Christmas when he was 10 months old. He wants us to sit and read it to him over and over and over. Once, twice, three times is never enough. He just cannot get enough of this book.
My 2 year old loves this book.......2003-06-24
What a fun book! It adds an extra storyline to the popular Piggy nursery rhyme. Everyone we've given this book to has loved it too. Though the book is pretty durable, when my daughter was younger, she did rip many of the pop-ups. That's okay -- we just bought another one now that she doesn't rip books anymore. : )
My son is Obsessed with this Book.......2002-12-19
My son absolutely loves this book and has since he was about 10 months (he is 19 months now). We didn't even realize when we first received it as a gift that the little toes moved (duh!). He did it on his own. He tries to grab the piggy that pops up before we pop the piggy back into hiding. I'm also buying a second one because he has "used" this book almost every day for the last 9 months and has beaten it up pretty bad. I can't wait for him to see the new copy -- he'll be so excited. Anyway, it is so unpredictable which books kids will love. I think this one has been the reliable favorite of my son.
This is a great toddler book.......2001-09-03
Nice and sturdy to take the rugged treatment of a toddler's hands. This book get passed around at play time and parties by all the kids - very popular. Great book
Awesome book.......2000-09-17
Great illustrations. Great color. Great action. Nice and short, but full of fun! Our son absolutely loves books and this book is one of his all-time favorites. Almost daily since he was 6 months old, he has been handing it to us to read to him. Today, I am buying a second copy of this book because my son (now 15 months) has mastered moving all the toes and I think he could benefit from a new copy -- one he can really make work. The moving piggies in our first copy of "This Little Piggy" are all bent up and do not slide easily anymore, and the last piggy (who goes wee, wee, wee, all the way home) has been glued back on 1/2 dozen times. We will also use this new copy to teach him why he should treat his books nicely :)

Piggies is Perfect.......2007-06-11
When our children were under 5, Piggies was an all time favorite. I must admit that despite reading after reading at bedtime... those Piggies still put a smile on my face. This book is absolutely delightful and funny. Every page has an illustration that is worth taking a few minutes to appreciate the humorous details of those Piggies.
My wife and I now give Piggies as a gift to the parents of younger kids. Our children are now teens and they still laugh about this book. It is truly one of those books for all ages.
Funny, always gets a smile.......2007-01-19
My children love this story. Every time I look at the fabulous illustrations, I always find something new to marvel at - & the children do, too (6 and 3). It's fun making up voices to go with the storyline - gets great giggles - especially at the end, when I get to tickle them.
A Family Favorite.......2006-11-26
The story in Piggies is cute, but the best part of the book is the detailed illustration. Every "piggie" has his or her own personality. One is a "bookworm," always reading even when in the bathtub. One of the "long" piggies is always stretching out, and one of the "fat" piggies is always munching on something. It's fun to see what each character is doing next in the pictures. You can read it over and over again, and always catch something new that's happening. For a mom who has to read the same story over and over again, this is a wonderful relief. I actually enjoy looking at this book every time I have to read it to my 2 year old son. We also act out the story, which amuses him to no end.
Pigtail wagging cute.......2006-06-09
We have two copies of this book, one we've had for 14 years now and we absolutely love this book! My children wanted this book read every night at bedtime for years, especially since at the end of the story we'd use our little piggies to "skip down their tummies and dance on their toes" just before their kiss goodnight. This short story is just delightful. The illustrations are wonderful and every time we'd read it we'd discover something new like, how the left hand smart piggy always has an item in his hand on one page that he'll use on the next page. Our original book has been taped repeatedly and my 16 yr old who got the book as a birthday gift when he was 2 still doesn't want to get rid of the book! It's like an old teddy bear.

The parents loved it.......2007-01-10
All those songs you remember from childhood, but have no clue what the words are beyond the first three. This is a great way to share time with your child, whether simply soothing them with song or having fun and teaching them music.

Disappointing.......2007-01-05
The on-line description of this book and CD led us to believe that there were many songs on the CD. Unfortunately, there were only a handful. We felt a bit deceived. On the plus side: (1) The book itself has wonderful pictures; (2) The history of each rhyme is interesting to an adult; (3) The descriptions of how to involve a child are very good.

This Little Piggy features unique, vibrant and playful art, with each scene depicted as a recognizable nursery rhyme or fairy tale. What a fun way to teach counting or subtraction!
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-03-22
I recently got this book from the library to read to my baby (he's due in June, but I'm sure he still manages to enjoy it!) and my 4 year old niece ended up dragging it to her house. It's 2 days overdue and we still cannot find it! She loved the book and took it everywhere with her, and now it might be anywhere in the city. It's a great book and great to read with young children. I had my niece count the piggies on each page and she loved it!
This is my toddler's favorite book!.......2004-08-28
Again and again, "This Little Piggy" is pulled off a shelf and dragged across the house. "Book?" "Book?" "Book?" (which really means "Mama, do you have five minutes to pull me on your lap and read my favorite story to me?").
I'm not sure what there is about this book...Maybe it's the illustrations...maybe it's the "different" items that are placed on each page to discuss...Maybe it's the "squishy" touch-and-feel pigs....Maybe it's just because it's a great counting book...but he loves it!!
I will be giving this to all my friends who are having children! It's definitely one of the top five toddler books out there!
Great art!.......2004-03-20
The artwork in this book is adorable. Each page shows the pigs in a different fairy tale or nursery rhyme. After you've counted the piggies, you can go back to the book and identify each of the classic stories in the art. What a fun idea!

Book Description
Here is a treat for John Irving addicts and a perfect introduction to his work for the uninitiated. To open this spirited collection, Irving explains how he became a writer. There follow six scintillating stories written over the last twenty years ending with a homage to Charles Dickens. This irresistible collection cannot fail to delight and charm.
Customer Reviews:
Irving's first - and only - book of stories.......2004-09-25
This is a fine collection of short stories, the only problem being that most people don't like short stories.
This is a particular problem for Irving since readers associate him with huge, emotional roller-coaster novels such as A Prayer for Owen Meany or The World According to Garp.
Also the selection here is a little odd: a mixture of the kind of fiction you might find in The New Yorker plus some non-fiction: autobiographical essays of childhood plus an introduction to a Dickens novel. Since I always thought Irving was more of a Hardy fan, I found this a little bemusing.
Overall, fans of Irving's longer work will tend to a little disappointed with this outing, though this is perhaps no fault of the author.
A Writer's Memoir.......2004-01-28
I love John Irving. When I first read Garp 25 years ago it knocked me out. Mr. Irving was truly an original voice. In "Piggy Sneed" he has given us a memoir, some short stories and essays. The memoir, "The Imaginary Girlfriend", is the best piece in the book. I enjoyed the fusion of his wrestling career and his writing career. I enjoyed the short stories and his attempt to share with us his some of the craft of writing. The homage to Dickens was enlightening and inspiring. I found the final piece of the collection (the one on Gunter Grass) the most difficult to read (perhaps because I haven't read any of his work but the piece has not inspired me). All in all if you love John Irving, you will find this book an excellent companion.
not Irving's best, but.........2003-11-19
Although certainly not Irving's best work, PIGGY SNEED is definitely a great vacation book to bring with you. The stories are faily quick to go through, and if you stop in the middle of one of them, it is pretty easy to pcik it back up again. Some of the stories are rather interesting, while others are a throwback to his days as a wrestler/wrestling coach, which doesn't particularly interest me, but might interest another reader.
John Irving's Garage Sale.......2003-07-06
Take "Trying to Save Piggy Sneed" for what it is, a mismatched collection of "memoirs", short stories, and "homages" to Charles Dickens and Gunter Grass. Unless you like to read about wrestling, the memoirs provide very little true insight into Irving. Do not waste your time buying "The Imaginary Girlfriend" as that comes from this book and is mostly dedicated to Irving's lackluster wrestling career. I think I learned more about Irving in the notes after the short stories than I did by reading the memoirs.
The short stories range in quality. "Weary Kingdom" was Irving's first published work and is a long, dull story (not even the author really likes it). "Interior Space" is my favorite, but even it is not as good as some of Irving's novels.
The homages to Dickens and Grass are somewhat interesting. I decided to give "Great Expectations" a try since Irving said that's the book that really made him want to write. I doubt it will have the same effect on me.
The biggest flaw in my opinion was that the publisher put the notes AFTER the various pieces of writing. I always read those first just to get the background of the story before I read it. For example, it helped me tolerate "Weary Kingdom" when I saw that it was really Irving's first piece of published writing.
At any rate, I recommend skipping this garage sale and sticking with Irving's novels. If you read this in the hope of understanding the author better, you will be disappointed as I was.
No-Holds-Barred Irving.......2003-06-09
Inside "Trying To Save Piggy Sneed" is a chapter in John Irving's life called "My Dinner At The White House" which is, quite simply, the funniest thing he's ever written. Perceptive, ironic, and devastatingly on-target, it reveals the author at his no-holds-barred BEST.
Be warned: "Trying To Save Piggy Sneed" is a collection of essays and short stories, and there are many readers (myself included) who find the stop-and-start quality of anthologies problematic - especially when the contents are as diverse as they are here. But Irving's regular-guy sensibility brings the disparate elements together, and there's something in "Piggy Sneed" to appeal to everyone - especially those who
a) have been ill-treated by a cavalier boyfriend,
b) are familiar with gut wrenches and whizzers,
c) have fallen under the spell of central Europe,
d) admire the works of Charles Dickens and/or Gunter Grass,
e) have experienced an unnaturally close relationship with a car.
Fall into any of these categories? If so, you may want to spend some time with "Piggy Sneed."

Book Description
Sometimes life seems like it's all about hurrying--so many places to go! And sometimes it's hard when things don't go your way--it can make a piggy angry and sad. So how do young piggies find a peaceful place in a frustrating world? They meditate! They find a quiet spot, a special place with a few simple things, and just breathe. They do this every day, feeling their breath going in and out. They slow down and calm down. Now it's easier to deal with whatever comes their way, and they have time to notice all the magical things in life, too!
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book!.......2007-06-04
A joy to read. Introduces the idea of taking a bit of time out of our day to mediatate in a sweet and loving way for kids.
Simple Wisdom.......2007-05-10
An accessible story for young children with alot of significant and important lessons taught at their level about the value of meditation. I use it in my classroom and the children seem to grasp its message, and listen to it with earnestness and enthusiasm.
Great introduction of mindfulness.......2007-05-07
This book is a wonderful introduction to mindfulness, and I use it with many different age groups. Great for use with families and individual kids as well.
Good Introduction!.......2006-03-04
While the story is not actually a meditation it is a great introduction for children to understand why....they should meditate. Simple text and adorable illustrations explain and show that "When you're peaceful, you can be truly fearless!" This book can definitely motivate young children to want to try and meditate. I also recommend the "Indigo Dreams Series" to move your children into meditation after being motivated by the peaceful piggies to try it. Great way to introduce a complicated concept.
Fun and valuable.......2006-03-03
This book was a useful step in introducing my two year old to pairing meditation with awareness of breath. She and I have been cultivating the ability to sit still and be aware of our breathing for a while. This book helped her to see that she can use breath awareness to calm herself in a stressful situation (hearing the vacuum cleaner, having to do something she doesn't want to do, etc.).
I did not give the book 5 stars because it lacks the substance to interest older readers, yet some of the concepts are a bit advanced for younger readers. By the time my daughter is old enough to be concerned about enemies, standing up to others, and accepting things as they are, she will probably be too old to relate to personified pigs.
