Book Description
A story filled with suspense and humor, this classic tale of a town mouse and a country mouse takes a new twist in the imaginative and talented hands of Jan Brett. She introduces two engaging mouse couples eager to get away from their everyday lives. But when they agree to swap homes, they find unexpected adventures around every corner. Lush green scenes alternate with the elegant details of a fine Victorian townhouse to make a sumptuous and stunning picture book.
Customer Reviews:
Classic story comes off wonderfully!.......2007-08-29
This book was an absolute delight! The story of the town mouse and the country mouse is a classic and a goodie, and Jan Brett did a fantastic job retelling it! Rather than having one mouse per, she made her characters into couples! This adds a suggestion of sweet romance that will have the little girls swooning and the boys, of course, gagging (but what can be expected?)
The story goes into surprisingly complex reasons for why the mice move. The way they switch is charming. Post-move, however, they have their various misadventures, and Brett is quick to let us know how the proper mouse couple could have handled the situation. The dialogue is clever and cute, as well as the descriptive prose. As usual, much of the story is said with pictures, but when writing there is a great amount of detail and forshadowing. Best writing from Brett I have seen!
Cute, detailed, and a great length for a long-time read, and the final punchline is clever and hilarious. Plenty of lessons and entertainment right here!
frightened children.......2007-07-29
What is this impulse to scare kids? The mice in the story are threatened at every turn, from a variety of predators. It's creepy.
PEEKING ENCOURAGED.......2004-04-18
Children often hear "No peeking!" A clever book designer encourages them to peek in this story of two mice cousins who temporarily trade residences.
Cleverly placed peepholes encourage youngsters to peek and see what new adventure awaits each mouse before turning the page.
Not only is this a fun book, but there's also a moral to the story: There's no place like home!
Classic tale with beautiful illustrations.......2003-11-19
This book tells the "grass-is-always-greener" story of the city mouse and the country mouse. One day, the city mouse wakes up and decide he is unhappy with his lot in life. He and his wife pack a picnic lunch and go off for a holiday in the country. There they meet the country mouse, who is enthralled by the smell of city cheese, and the mice decide to do a house swap. However, they each find that they don't have the skills and knowledge necessary for survival in the other's environment. Attacked by cats and besodden in a thunderstorm, they rethink the arrangement and return home. Very young children may find some of the predators a bit scary, but older children should be able to handle the tension and enjoy the humor as well. The book has about 1100 words.
SWITCHING PLACES =).......2002-11-29
A good moral book. I agree! It talks about how these mouse familys switch places to see how eachother lives and to see what it is like to live like eachother! A GOOD BOOK!
Book Description
For 17 years readers have turned to Storey Books for advice on raising animals. Our Modern Way series of six books has sold more than 1,000,000 copies. In an effort to provide readers with the best how-to animal books on the market we are completely updating all six Modern Way titles and reintroducing them as part of our Guide to Raising series.
Written by experts, these guides give novice and experienced livestock farmers all they need to know to successfully keep and profit from animals. Each book includes information on selection, housing, space requirements, breeding and birthing techniques, feeding, behavior, and health concerns and remedies for illness. The books also address the business of raising animals -- processing meat, milk, eggs, and more. The authors were chosen not only for their expertise but also for their ability to explain the ins and outs of animal husbandry in an inviting and authoritative manner.
Whether readers are ready to start an entire herd or flock or are considering purchasing their first animal, Storey's Guide to Raising series offers vital information; each book is an indispensable reference.
Customer Reviews:
All you need to know.......2007-09-06
This guide contains just about everything you need to know about raising meat rabbits. Although geared toward mass production, there is also some good advice for pet owners.
A Rabbit Book for Breeders and Producers.......2007-07-04
Storey's Guides are primarily written for producers and breeders of livestock, not for "pets" (although most deal with livestock animals as pets), and most Storey's guides give a certain amount of slaughtering information as well as recipes. Don't even pick this book up if you are offended by the concept of eating rabbits- this isn't the book for you. For people who want to raise, breed and eat rabbits, however, it meets a need. I've always found the Storey's Guides to be pretty good informationally speaking and the authors usually have extensive experience raising the animals concerned. This book may have a few light sections, but I think it's a good starting reference, perhaps the best out there at present. It's certainly better than any other rabbit book I've seen so far.
Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits.......2006-11-10
Contains everything you need to know, and is easy to follow.
One of the better Storey's guide books..........2006-10-16
Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits is one of the better written Storey guides. By that I mean it reads a bit less like a textbook. The author adds a bit of humor, which keeps it from getting boring.
One of the best chapters was the one on Rabbit "Housing and Equipment" as there were several good illustrations of rabbit hutches for the small scale pet owner and the large scale operator in this chapter.
If you're looking to pick a Rabbit breed you like and are looking for lots of photo's and information on each breed, this book doesn't have it. Also, many parts of this book are geared toward larger scaled rabbit breeders and sellers, than for the small-scale hobbyist wanting to raise a few rabbits as pets.
Overall, this is a wonderful reference book on Rabbits and one I would buy again.
Best Rabbit Book Ever!.......2006-02-02
I have read at least 6 books on raising rabbits and this one is the best by far! (Bennett's other rabbit books are also great - but there is a lot of overlap so only one is needed.) I used his information every step of the way when building my rabbitry, including building my own all-wire hutches. If you are interested in raising rabbits, be sure to join the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeder's Association at http://arba.net/ )It is very inexpensive to join and membership includes a free copy of the "Official Guide Book Raising Better Rabbits & Cavies" 256 pages and another great book. The book itself is worth the membership, but you also get a subscription to the magazine "Domestic Rabbits."

Rosemary Wells' tales of animals with very human problems make her a favorite from the board-book years on. Now one old Wells friend, Nora, that noisy mouse, returns with all her middle-child problems still on display. What's a mouse to do when little brother and big sister take up all mom and dad's time? Yup. Plenty of noise. Look at these new pictures and you can almost hear the racket. With all that clatter, it might be better to read this one before dinner, not before bed!
Book Description
It's tough being the middle mouse. No one's paying any attention to Nora, so she decides to do something her family can't ignore: make noise. Nora slams windows, bangs doors, and upsets furniture, to no avail. It's not until she crashes out the door--and the house goes strangely silent--that her family realizes: a noisy Nora is much better than no Nora at all.

Noisy Nora (DEW SEW FINE).......2007-09-28
Probably the first book I had as a child learning to read - I memorized the rhymes of the book before I could read them! Nora trys to get attention...and then decides to "leave" in a final attempt to get attention...but then she comes right "back again! with a monumental crash!" It's soooo cute! Yes, her sister calls her "dumb", but as another review states, that's a lot different from the words we hear on the TV now a days! I still love the book and tell it by heart to girls I work with!Noisy Nora (Picture Books)
A True Classic.......2006-10-09
"Noisy Nora" is the story of a young mouse girl, a middle child who just can't seem to get any attention. Ignored because her younger brother needs constant care and her parents play games with her older sister, she resorts to acting out --- making all sorts of noise. The rhymes are simple but catchy.
This version of "Noisy Nora" features all-new illustrations, updating from the original 1973 version. The illustrations go well with the story and add a lot of life. Rosemary Well's very first book is an interesting story that just about anyone can relate to at times.
favorite children's book.......2005-12-24
I loved this book as a child, and had it memorized before I could read. Fifteen years later I found myself searching for a copy of it to give to my younger half sister so that she could also enjoy it.
Bottom line: yes, this book features a child acting out for attention. However, Nora's parents ignore her until she stops her bad behavior. Yes, this book uses the word dumb. But any child will hear much worse words from television and other media sources.
"Noisy Nora" is a wonderful book that will instill a love of reading in any child.
Fondly remembered from childhood.......2005-05-07
I borrowed this book from the library so often as a child, that I knew exactly where to find it on the shelf well before I was able to read the cover. Now that I have a daughter of my own, this was one of the first books we added to our collection of children's stories. Not only are the prose and illustrations totally charming, but the book offers several "teachable moments" (including opportunities to talk about name-calling, which earned the book a dressing-down by another reviewer). This is a two-generation favorite!
Not for my kids.......2004-10-20
Rosemary Wells' book entitled Felix Feels Better is one of our family's new favorites. I went to the book store seeking out more of her books. I thumbed through this one and thought it looked really cute so I bought it. It wasn't until I got home that I read the phrase, "Nora!" said her sister, "Why are you so dumb?" repeated several times in the book. Name calling of any kind is not practiced in our house and I was disappointed to find this in the book. This is also not a book that my son's teacher would read in class for the same reason. I will be returning it to the book store. Very disappointing.

Will she ever find her way home again?

A Cosy Tale with Gorgeous Drawings.......2007-08-14
I loved this book as a child and still have the original printing which I read to my boys. My 7 year old especially loves it. This story follows Primrose Woodmouse one evening as she wanders into the woods. At the end, evening falls and the illustrations turn eerily enchanting. This is one of those books that children as well as parents will enjoy. I look forward to finally completing my Brambly Hedge collection for my children.
Wonderful Autumn book.......2005-08-10
There really isn't a lot of quality books about the Fall, which is a shame since it is such a lovely season. Kill Barklem books about Brambley Hedge are wonderful little tales, filled with detailed drwaings about the little community of mice. Winter is just around the corner and the harvest is not complete. crops The mice rush to collect the rest of their crops before the rain begins. The wealthy Lord Woodmouse's daughter tries to help out in earnest but has wandered into the Woods. Now she is lost and scared, and it is after dark. Thrilling little tale that is worth it for the artwork alone.
Will Primrose Woodmouse find her way out of Chestnut Wood?.......1999-11-10
First published in 1980, Autumn Story follows Lord Woodmouse's daughter through her adventures exploring the delights of autumn harvest in the woods, until she realizes she is lost. As always, remarkable illustrations of blackberry brambles and fauna seen only by tiny folk bring both authenticity and charm.

A Book Review From a Spiritridge Third Grader.......2007-03-22
Do you want an adventurous, dangerous, thrilling story that will make you jump out of your skin? Well, you should read Ragweed, by Avi. Ragweed is about a mouse that lives by a brook and wants to travel from country to country to see the world! He comes along a fork in the road and needs to decide which way to go. Suddenly, a vole bumps into him! Finding himself starting a conversation on which way to go, he discovers that one path leads to a railroad! So he follows it to the railroad and gets on one of the parked trains. After the train ride Ragweed runs top speed to escape a cat! The rest is SECRET until you read the book!
I enjoyed that Ragweed met lots of friends, including extremely unpleasant ones! For example, he meets Silversides and Graybar two unpleasant cats.
Readers who are interested in adventure and who can read thick chapter books should read this book! It is very satisfying!
Adorable!.......2007-02-13
I am currently reading this book, its the second time I've read it and it is just adorable. Clutch has got to be my favorite character; she's a rebel, rides a skateboard, plays the guitar, and to top it off she dyed her hair (fur on top of her head) green! This story is exciting and cute and good for anyone who likes the Avi series or just loves animals.
Best Book Ever!.......2007-01-19
I loved the book Ragweed because it was exciting and adventurous. I would definitely read this book if you like action packed books. This book is about a mouse named Ragweed who meets new friends. He also leaves his family in search of adventure. This is a good book for people who love animals!

Ragweed leaves his family behind to see the world. When he gets off the train and confronts Silverside for the first time, what will happen? Can a tiny country mouse outwit its biggest enemy?
Ragweed; an Adventurous Mouse.......2005-11-01
Ragweed is about a mouse who lives in the country but wants to see the world. He goes to the city where an evil cat is trying to kill all the mice. In this exciting story, Ragweed and his friend Clutch must out wit the cat and bring peace to the city.
Book Description
Bernelly is a country mouse who spends most of her time outdoors, teaching fly-fishing and tying beautiful flies. Harriet is a famous artist who lives and paints in her cozy apartment in the heart of the city. When a leaky boot sends Bernelly to the city for a new pair, Harriet tries to persuade her that city life is best. Bernelly has fun visiting museums, attending the ballet, and shopping in fancy stores, but insists that Harriet sample country life. Each mouse tries hard to enjoy the other's life, but each finally finds the most happiness right at home.
Customer Reviews:
There's Just No Place Like Home............2002-10-22
"Bernelly was a country mouse. She lived west of the city in a small village that had everthing a mouse could need-except a shoe shop. From spring through fall Bernelly was a fly-fishing instructor... And in winter she spent her time tying beautiful flies." But a leaky boot sends her to the city for new shoes and a visit with cousin Harriet. "Harriet was a famous artist, and her home was also her studio. In winter she painted glorious masterpieces... And in summer she traveled to exotic places that might inspire her." Harriet was thrilled to have Bernelly visit, and took her all over the city, sightseeing and shopping, and by the end of the week, Bernelly was exhausted. "It is just too crowded and noisy here. I miss being able to sit quietly by the river watching my beautiful trout." Harriet was intrigued with such a simple, quiet life. "Perhaps it will inspire me." But of course, country life was not the life for her. Harriet was bored with fishing and gardening, napping and "dinner parties with exciting tales of trout." She missed the "hustle and bustle of city life-the noise, the smells, the shopping!" and heads back to the city, where surprisingly, she finds country life did inspire her, in its own way.....Elizabeth Dahlie's modern retelling of an old, favorite fable is playful and entertaining. Her engaging text is only outdone by her charming and endearing illustrations, rendered in soft, pastel tones, and filled with marvelous eye-catching detail and humor. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Bernelly & Harriet is a warm and captivating read aloud with a gentle message that won't be lost on little ones...there's no place like home.
A Tale of Two Mice.......2002-04-15
This is a delightful new version of the Country Mouse and the City Mouse.
Bernelly's an independent country mouse who loves her life. Her jaunty attire of red scarf and black boots suit her life style as a fly-fishing instructor. She spends her leisure time tying flies and reading. Her library has an eclectic group of books that include, THE KENYON REVIEW, HENRIETTA, and THE VILLAGE, which indicate that she's a well read young mouse. Of course, her favorite books are about fly-fishing. When Bernelly realizes that she needs new boots, she decides to visit her cousin Harriet for a shopping trip to the city. Harriet's a stylish city mouse who wears gold loop earrings, and has a distinctive flair for clothes. Her sophisticated life as a famous artist allows for exotic travel and shopping. She's delighted to have Bernelly visit and takes her all over town seeing the sights. Bernelly's a bit overwhelmed and home sick, and invites Harriet to visit the country. When the city cousin visits the country, she's not overwhelmed, she's a little bored with the fly-fishing, gardening and the slow pace of life. In spite of the fact that the two mice have different life styles, they seem to enjoy an affectionate relationship which adds a nice warmth to the story.
I enjoyed the detail that Elizabeth Dahlie put into her illustrations. My favorite images are of Bernelly and Harriet walking hand in hand down a cobblestone city street where a flower pot reflects a house number--a delicious tea, served on blue and white china at Putney's Tea Shop-- shopping at an expensive shoe store--and, a mixed group of Bernelly's friends sharing a conversation at dinner. Each page of this enchanting book is filled with wonderful pictures.
A well done book that children will love.

If you are the parent of a young child, you probably know who Maisy is. She's a mouse with a duck, a squirrel, an elephant, and a crocodile for friends. Why the crocodile isn't trying to eat the others is beyond me, but that's life in Maisy's world.
Both of my daughters love the Maisy books; there's something about their simple stories and colorful pictures that even appeals to adults. The books are short and easy to read. But, the stories are never obnoxiously simplistic, like so many other books for small children.
Maisy's on the farm and someone has to feed all of the animals. Will Maisy be able to take care of all of her chorse and have breakfast? Will little black cat enjoy a bowl of milk? And just where did Maisy get that tractor? A fun book for small children (and even a few older ones).
My 10 month old loves this.......2003-03-20
We have many Maisy books at our house, but this one is especially cute! Maisy works on the farm milking cows, feeding chickens, etc. The pictures are adorable and my 10 month old likes us to make the farm animal sounds as we read it to him.
I highly recommend it!

A classic Maisy book. Simple and gentle, Maisy feeds her friends on the farm.

Absolutely timeless, wonderful!!.......2006-04-26
This book is the one to read if you seriously need an information-overload on positivity, and doing what needs to be done on this Spaceship Earth. Everyone is crew, no-one is passenger. The information contained within this _very_ short book, bears reading every year, every month.
Buckminster Fuller should be so much more appreciated than what he was while he lived, but more so, what is the point of being a fan, if one isn't finding what one can do based on one's own experience, and then doing it. Find what needs to be done, and do it!
I wish I could send this book to everyone I know and have them read it, re-read it, and re-re-read it, just to make sure the information contained here-in gets absorbed into one's mind also. It is not mere rational information, this is what he came up out of intuitive, experience-based thinking, using the right hemisphere instead of the left-hemisphere.
Let there be many more Guinea Pigs between here, and the forced re-definition of utopia.

Engaging illustrations and perfectly simple text.......2007-05-13
My 2 yo loves this book, on the 1 Mouse plans a party page we talk about all the people she will invite to our party and by the end she cheers Happy New Year (in Vietnamese) with me. She was enchanted by Lunar New Year this year, and this book has been a wonderful way to help keep it alive for her. We are not Vietnamese and we love this book.
Great book to learn about Tet.......2007-02-14
This is a great book for preschoolers to teach about some of the activities related to the Vietnamese New Year and its celebration. The embroidered illustrations are quite intricate. I highly recommend this simple, yet informative book.
great book of vietnamese traditions.......2005-01-25
this book is simple but filled with information. one mouse plans a party, two mice go to market, 3 mice paint and polish, 4 mice prepare a feast, 5 mice learn their fortunes, 6 mice open presents...etc. The last two pages of the book give further information on each activity - what it is and why it is an important tradition. I like it because most books do not focus on the vietnamese tradition of Chinese New Year. Our family is of Vietnamese heritage, so this book is best for us.
