Book Description
Written by a lawyer for lawyers, Deborah Arron's book is a virtual encyclopedia for lawyers in transition, covering such topics as how to conduct a self-assessment and transferrable skills analysis, how to detect and prepare for layoff, how to establish a transitional financial plan, how to market your special talents, how to work with career consultants and headhunters, how to decide whether to stay in law or leave, how to avoid job-interview hell, how to handle compensation negotiations that work in your favor.

useless for anyone who needs help.......2007-09-07
My problem with all these books that are supposed to help us lawyers find a job or a new career is that they assume we are already successful lawyers. Most of the advice offered is for people who've been practicing for years and therefore have an established network of contacts. The advice for those without experience in the law is geared toward those who already had another career prior to law and suggests that job seekers focus on that career.
This book, all the other "how lawyers can find job" books, and my useless Career Services Office simply assume that all job seekers have parents who are partners in law firms, great networks, and years of related experience.
Even the one of the good reviews given on this site is from someone who has years of experience. Duh! The book promises that it can help anyone at any level of their career. It fails.
What an EXPERIENCED lawyer can do.......2007-02-05
I'm very disappointed in this book. As a recent law school grad WITHOUT years of experience, I was looking for ALTERNATIVES to practicing law at all!! Instead, this book wasted my time and money by assuming I would have the legal work experience to make me attractive to other professions or give me the knowledge to begin some business of my own.
All I really learned was what I already knew was available as an alternative -- teach!
Phoey!! What a waste of my money and time.
Good Starting Point.......2006-09-10
So many lawyers feel burned out, exhausted and stressed--and they don't where to turn next. This book is an easy and anonymous next step for lawyers exploring career change solutions.
Some of the other reviewers raised valid criticisms; parts of the book are very general indeed. However, for many lawyers, it's the ideal starting point for analyzing what they really want to do with their life.
Many lawyers I know have enjoyed this book's exercises for mapping out an ideal job and analyzing transferable skills. They also like the appendix listing jobs in and around the law; it's good for brainstorming possibilities.
As a lawyer coach, I particularly appreciate the chapter dealing with lawyers' finances. Far too many attorneys have no realistic handle on their spending--either personal or professional. Many don't know how much money they REALLY NEED to live on. A financial analysis and budget are critical parts of any job change.
The author peppered the book with links to websites listing jobs, salaries and benefits, and other job-hunting tips. The book functions well as intended: as a good starting point for lawyers contemplating career change.
This book was overly simplistic and had little good advice........2003-12-05
I could sum this book up in eight words:
So you didn't like law school? Try teaching.
There I just saved you the time of ordering and reading it. This book was a typical one of those books you see in a public library with really basic common sense ideas and little insight.
WHAT ARE THESE OTHER REVIEWERS TALKING ABOUT?.......2003-10-27
I cannot believe the criticism of this book. THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR LAWYERS WHO ARE HAPPY IN THEIR WORK AND WHO HAVE FOUND THEIR NICHE.
THE THRUST OF THE BOOK IS TO ASSIST LAWYERS WHO HAVE EITHER GROWN DISILLUSIONED WITH THE PRESSURES OF LEGAL PRACTICE OR WHO HAVE DECIDED THAT THEY WISH TO APPLY THEIR SKILLS IN ANOTHER ARENA.
YOU CANNOT READ THIS BOOK ONCE AND EXPECT TO APPLY THE PRINCIPLES WITHIN A FEW DAYS OR WEEKS. This is a book for long term change and not for the impatient, which is a quality I suspect some of the negative reviewers have demonstrated.
THIS BOOK HAS HELPED ME ENORMOUSLY THROUGH A DIFFICULT CAREER CHANGE. WITHOUT THIS BOOK I WOULD NOT HAVE COPED BECAUSE THE STRATEGIES AND INFORMATION CONTAINED IN IT TAKE TIME TO PUT INTO PRACTICE. IF YOU TAKE A LONG TERM VIEW, IMPLEMENT THE IDEAS AND REGULARLY REFER TO THE BOOK WHEN REVIEWING YOUR PROGRESS THEN THIS BOOK IS INDISPENSIBLE.
The author has pinpointed with great accuracy the level of discontent in some quarters of the profession. Hey with the blame culture, billable hours, risk management, and so on, it is important that alternative career options be identified.
These issues are not often discussed among professionals and can make for uncomfortable reading. This does not mean that they should be swept under the carpet and ignored.
The techniques start with self assessment and identification of the unbelievable skills that we have acquired as Lawyers. Nowhere does the author criticise the profession or fellow professionals.
Indeed she gives people positive strategies for reviewing the options available, making choices and taking action steps.
IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A CAREER CHANGE WITHIN OR OUT OF THE PROFESSION, THIS IS THE LEADING BOOK AND AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE.
Book Description
The ultimate inside story: how bureaucracy, politics, and a disregard of science combined to crippleperhaps forevera great American city
As deputy director of the Louisiana State University Hurricane Center, Ivor van Heerden had for years been warning state and local officials about New Orleans's vulnerability to flooding. But like Cassandra's, his predictions were ignoreduntil Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29, 2005. Suddenly, van Heerden found himself at the center of a media maelstrom. Stepping forward to challenge the official version of events, he revealed the truth about the city's shoddy levee construction.
Now, in The Storm, van Heerden shares up-to-the-minute reporting from his investigations and connects the dots among the Army Corps of Engineers, the bureaucrats, the politicians, and the chain of eventsboth natural and humanthat culminated in catastrophe. An epic of cutting- edge science and systemic bureaucratic failure, The Storm is the first book from a major player in the Katrina disaster and a riveting narrative that brings expertise, passion, and a human viewpoint to America's greatest natural disaster.
Customer Reviews:
The Storm.......2007-05-14
Good description of what happened during Katrina and the causes of it. However, it is a first person narrative with a bit of self-congratulation embedded throughout (which is kind of annoying).
Read This, and worry about your town..........2007-01-09
I am a New Orleanian. I was there, I know the details, and I know this writer has a lot to teach about disasters and personal responsibility to the community. He's a good guy who a lot of politicians tried to gag.
The book does a lot of CYA- people who knew what they were doing during Katrina have taken a lot of bludgeoning from fools. Mostly fools in politics and the Corps of Engineers- who caused the whole damn New Orleans disaster through sheer idiocy.
Rad this book and weep, for us, for yourselves. Where ever you live, there's the same incompetance waiting to fail you.
Worth The Time.......2006-11-15
Let me first start by explaining that Ivor Van Heerden is my step father, and Mike Bryan is my good friend. During the months in which this book was written, my family was not only dealing with the aftermath of Katrina, but the effects of someone with such huge ideas and opinions trying to fit them into a few hundred pages. The amount of time and dedication that went into this book alone was enough to encourage me to read it, but once i did i realized that it's positively genius. The detailes he goes into just to make sure the readers can understand what he is about to discuss definitly sets him apart from other katrina authors. And Mike Bryan's years of writing experience really bring eveything together in this book. All in all I have to say that this book is definitly worth your time, if you want to understand the big picture behind katrina, as well as the things not many people knew at the time.
Eye-Opening .......2006-08-04
Get your dictionary out for acronyms... very confusing at times. Great storytelling in the first half of the book, but much finger pointing at the end. Van Heerden is very passionate about his work and point of view. Story matches reality I guess in relation to this catastrophic, horrible event. Very eye-opening, as our government continues down the same road, levee's ...FEMA... wars..... cover-up after cover-up.... Etc...
The Sad Truth.......2006-07-14
As a former emergency management planner, I found this book to be an excellent analysis of what really went wrong in New Orleans. It is a treatise for government officials to learn what not to do and an outline of what we as citizens should demand from our government leaders. It presents very technical information and scientific analysis in a manner that even an elected official can understand. But, beyond presenting the scientific basis of why New Orleans flooded, it presents an outline of solutions that should and must be considered. It is an great testament to the fact that some issues should be above everyday politics and that some important decisions that a government may be asked to make should be based upon science and not political considerations. This is a must read for every citizen and should be a mandatory read for every elected official.

Customer Reviews:
Powerfully Written, Personally Applicable, Perfectly Suited for Small Groups.......2007-10-03
I highly recommend "What's Missing Inside You?" by Paul Schlieker. I have read it, highlighted it and put red stars by the most significant points that stood out to me in each chapter. The discussion and assessment questions after each chapter help bring the reader to the point of personal application. I cannot think of any area of my life that would not be touched in some way by the principles shared.
I was especially moved by the chapter entitled, "The Forgotten One", and continue to think and study about the Holy Spirit's role in my life. Now when I awaken each morning I start the day by praying, "Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me."
I have taken four different study groups through "What's Missing Inside You?" Members of those groups have used the book for groups they lead as well. Because of the powerful style of writing and the personal discussion and assessment questions, this book is well-suited for small group study. "What's Missing Inside You?" will help you impact others, whether in your home, your office or your church. I strongly believe that if you can read it, you can lead it.
Outstanding study for seekers and seasoned Christ followers alike!.......2007-02-18
With wit and vulnerability, Paul Schlieker explains why fulfillment and meaning can only be found in a loving relationship with the God who created us. Each lesson clearly articulates an important theme, illustrated with fascinating real life stories and supporting Scriptures. The Response Questions at the end of each chapter are well crafted to generate open discussion and personal discovery; and the Personal Assessments are outstanding tools to help you get honest with yourself and God.
"What's Missing Inside You?" is an excellent resource for those who are seeking answers to the most important questions in life. But it's also a fresh, compelling study for seasoned believers, going beyond doctrinal formulas to help us rediscover Jesus Christ as first love. This study inspires us to respond to God's love, to find our value and self-esteem in Him, and to follow Jesus into the corner of the world where we live and love the people we find there. If you're looking for something new and fresh and insightful for your small group, this is it.
Very Good Book for New Christians .......2007-01-03
As a Bible Study leader with 30+ years of experience I found this book to touch some key areas. We are living in a post-modern generation and this series of studies are geared directly to that generation. We need more bible studies like this one! This is one you MUST have on your shelf for Christians who need basic grounding.
A Great Read for Both Believers and Those Just Beginning the Search.......2006-11-05
The first few chapters of What's Missing Inside You? do a great job of laying the foundation of faith...who is God, what's important to Him, who is man, how he was created with a need only God can fill, how sin separated us from God and our need for Jesus. "The goal of the gospel is not just to get you out of hell and into heaven, but to get God out of heaven and back into you." I LOVE chapters 7 and 9 about the Person of the Holy Spirit. I think, for maybe the first time, I understand who the Holy Spirit is and His role in my life. The last chapter lays out our role in God's mission. Paul's teaching is clear and the illustrations are powerful. What's Missing Inside You? is a helpful read for believers who thought they had it all figured out and for those with little exposure to spiritual teaching.

Inspiring, insightful book.......2001-11-27
If you have the "instinct" for working with children who have emotional and behavioral difficulties, this book is for you!! In the format of an experienced E/BD teacher's "thought journal," its short anecdotes touch your heart and remind you that even though sometimes your best is not enough, it's all that you can give these tough kids. I, too, keep this book within easy reach and give it to all my friends, student teachers and aides. (Additional suggestion: I also have been known to give it to those folks who don't "get it" in an attempt to bring out that empathy gene -- works well with administrators and grumpy regular ed teachers.) GREAT BOOK!!!
I am a brand new Behavior Disorders Teacher!!!!!.......2001-03-05
This book has brought me peace within the first part of my journey of educating emotionally disturbed teenagers. I am grateful to have purchased this book and read it every night before I go to bed. There are many things the author says that are just "food for thought". I find that these 'morsels' really apply in terms of dealing with my students. I recommend this book to ALL teachers, both new and veteran who work with emotionally disturbed children.
Insightful reading on a difficult subject.......2000-09-14
This is a book that is easy to read but has a lot of helpful information on a difficult subject. There aren't a lot of "answers" in this book but it gave me a lot of food for thought in dealing with difficult children.
Silly and not very useful.......2000-06-27
I'm amazed such a serious subject is given this cutesy treatment, but then, this is just the sort of book educators love to write. Nothing really practical here, just sweet little anecdotes about kids who fight over the swingset at recess and inner musings of the author on how much he "admires" the passion of abused children. The format is about one paragraph per page, so if you're looking for detailed instruction and explanation, this book ain't it (it's also a shameful waste of paper). A nice book for those who want to keep the subject clean and simple, but not recommended for those who desire real information or understanding. Silly and slightly insulting.
Excellent for All Teachers.......1999-12-01
This is an excellent book to have at your desk. I give a copy to every student teacher I supervise once they've completed their training with us. It's anecdotal format makes it easy to refresh yourself quickly and the information is useful for kids grades k-12. I highly recommend this book. It's the best $16.00 I've spent!

Advance Praise for Food Fight
"This is a fascinating, empowering book must-read filled with practical ways to take action" -- Shape Magazine
“Food Fight is a blueprint for the nation taking action on the obesity crisis. In his analysis, Brownell is balanced but bold, courageous and creative. A public health landmark.” --David A. Kessler, M.D., Dean, Yale School of Medicine, Former Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration
“We are indeed involved in a food fight. It is a fight for the health of America---especially our children. This book provides much of the necessary ammunition to win this fight.” --David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., former Surgeon General, Director of the National Center for Primary Care, Morehouse School of Medicine
“Provides a compelling approach to reverse the obesity epidemic now gripping our nation. Anyone concerned about this crisis, and that should include all Americans, will find this book enlightening.” --Walter C. Willett, M.D., Dr.P.H., Chair, Department of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health
“Food Fight is a very informative, provocative, and well-written account of the role of food in the growing public health problem of obesity. I highly recommend it.” --Steven N. Blair, P.E.D., President and CEO, the Cooper Institute
“Food Fight rings the alarm to enlist Americans in an effort to protect children from the ‘toxic environment’ that is leading to skyrocketing rates of obesity and other health problems.” --Michael F. Jacobson, Ph.D., Executive Director, Center for Science in the Public Interest
“Kelly Brownell and colleagues were among the first to sound the alarm, that an increasingly "toxic environment" puts everyone, and especially children, at risk for obesity. Food Fight enters the front lines in the battle between public health and private profit.” --David S. Ludwig, M.D., Ph.D., Director, Obesity Program, Children’s Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School
How America is eating itself into a national health crisis and what we can do about it
In Food Fight, one of the world's best-known and most respected experts on nutrition, obesity, and eating disorders delivers the sobering message that America is quickly succumbing to a "toxic" food environment guaranteed to produce obesity, disability, and death.
Dr. Kelly D. Brownell goes beyond the bestselling Fast Food Nation to explore the roots of the obesity epidemic and the enormous toll it is taking on the nation's health, vitality, and productivity. And he offers an unflinching assessment of a culture that feeds its pets better than its children, that targets the poor and children as a market for high-calorie, low-nutrition junk food and manipulates children into poor eating habits with toy giveaways and in-school promotions.
But Food Fight isn't all bad news. It is also an inspiring call to action from one of the nation's most effective public health advocates. Dr. Brownell suggests bold public policy initiatives for stemming the rising tide of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, such as imposing taxes on junk food and using the proceeds to make healthy foods more affordable and available. He describes steps individuals can take to help safeguard their and their families' health, including pressuring schools to remove junk food vending machines. And he offers a workable plan for improving individual and family eating and exercise habits.
Customer Reviews:
It's not my fault, save the children and other clichés.......2005-10-13
I've read both the book and the reviews, and it's funny how saving the children is the "it's not my fault" finger-pointing device du jour. I don't purport to be a cross-section of America, but I have no problems getting my toddlers out of a grocery store without their Sponge-Bob cereal (my wife is a different story...she loves the stuff) and can drive by a McDonalds while ignoring the shrieks of "we want a happy meal!"
However, I am overweight. I don't blame Kraft or McDonalds (although I wouldn't mind getting in on that cash cow once the lawsuits hit), I can perfectly well on my own decide to down the entire bag of Oreos without a 30-second ad telling me to.
Mr. Brownell's anecdotal descriptions of the effects of advertising on obesity do not create any link. As a matter of fact (forget citation of study...but could look it up if anyone wants it) the amount of calories consumed by the average person has increased about 1% over the last 20 years, while the obesity rate has soared. So...somehow the food industry has been plotting against my children by adding 400% more calories into that 1%? It doesn't make sense, as do most of the arguments in the book.
Weak Argument.......2005-03-22
Yes, fast food is everywhere. No, Americans don't eat enough "real" food (that is, food which was prepared from fresh, natural ingredients). Yes, if we ate more real food and less fast food, we'd be healthier.
But here's where Dr. Brownell goes wrong. He pushes the popular myth (already rejected by cooler heads within the medical profession) that if we were healthier, we'd automatically be *slimmer.* As others have mentioned, he doesn't take individual choice into account. Nor does he so much as mention the ill effects of dieting; from a researcher of eating disorders, such an oversight seems huge.
It has also already been said that Dr. Brownell--also the author of several weight-loss books--is himself a fat man. Does this mean that he *himself* follows an unhealthy lifestyle rather than heeding his own advice to others...and is therefore no better off than anyone *else* his size? Or does it mean that weight loss is *not,* in fact, always a health solution or even a likelihood--and that he is therefore a living flaw in his own argument? Let the reader be the judge.
Not an entirely satisfying read.......2004-11-13
This book hopes to explain why the world is currently facing a childhood obesity crsis. It places blame on multimedia and national apathy, rather than on individual action. While most of the authors points are well made and researched, the book covers material that has been widely available to most North Americans. Solutions are suggested, but some are not well thought out, and perpetuate other social and global concerns such as child labour in third world countries. While educational, this is not an entirely satisfying read.
Eye popping look at America's march to obesity!.......2004-08-03
Yowsa! This is a well researched account of how the food manufacturers are luring Americans into obesity beginning with our children.
Companies use product placement, product endorsement, product sizing and other factors to lure us into purchasing items that are not always the best for our health. By starting with our children, these manufacturers can capture a market and make profits for life.
Take soft drinks for example. Through active promotion, soda companies have encouraged greater consumption. According to Brownell, soda consumption in the eleven through seventeen age group has doubled within the past 20 years. Stores like 7-Eleven have increased the large size of pop from 16 oz to a 64 oz Double Gulp. Celebrities are used to push pop and brand name bottles show up on popular television shows.A twenty ounce bottle of a typical soft drink has 15 teaspoons of sugar. Is it any wonder that soda is the number one cause of obesity in children?
Brownell walks you through shocking examples of how Disney and other characters that are plastered on boxes of usually processed food items capture the child's desire. How sports heros like Michael Jordan (McDonald's) and entertainers like Garth Brooks (Dr. Pepper) are used to sell foods many of which are not in the consumers best interest.
Different manufactureres are out there lobbying to get your dollars and they are not thinking of your expanding girth or health. The sugar industry, for example, encourages the addition of sugar to everything from peanut butter to cereal to condiments to increase their bottomline (Americans consume 152 pounds per person per year).
The idea of MORE FOOD equals value is also covered. Why buy 1 taco at 89cents when you can have two for only a few cents more. Again encouraging consumption. Yes you can upgrade from that minibon to a classic cinnabon for only 48cents. But that 48cents will buy you 370 extra un-needed calories!
Brownell shares in depth the temptation our schools are facing. Many schools are selling out to pizza and soda companies. These rich producers offer millions of dollars to the educational system in exchange for brand placement. The schools eager to supplement their meager resources are loathe to turn it down.
Brownell also gives information on what we can do to stem the tide of the unhealthy food that is being foisted on us. He gives a number of suggestions including incentives for purchasing healthy foods, taxes on non-nutritious food, greater access and lower prices on real food and much more.
Most of us recognize that we are being targeted by the food producers. But as you read through this 358 page book you will realize just how far reaching the problem is. An excellent read for parents who are having a hard time resisting the call of "Blues Clues" fruit treats and for the eater who wonders why they just sucked in a muffin that could easily feed 4.
Excellent information and resource!
Lee Mellott
Being overweight isn't your fault, he says.......2004-07-22
Wow, what a depressing book Kelly Brownell has written. Agribusiness is apparently creating a "toxic environment" for us, especially children, and that environment makes it IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to choose foods wisely.
As social science goes, this is garbage. As for even remotely enlightened insight into how any business works, it's one of the stupidest books I've ever read.
To begin with, Mr. Brownell is obese himself, which is rather shocking from the director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders. Like Dr. Phil McGraw, he has ZERO business writing a book about obesity.
This topic is absolutely, concretely germane to his work. After all, a constant theme in the book is that Big Scary Food Companies have Big Scary Vested Interests in producing "toxic" foods. Wouldn't a fat person have a vested interest in writing a book blaming his fatness on anything other than himself?
Where to begin with the distortions here? My favorite, which is an overarching narrative throughout Food Fight: It's apparently cheaper to eat junk food, according to Brownell, which is why the poor are so much more likely to be obese than the rest of the population.
As someone who made his way through grad school on a weekly food budget of about $25, I'm here to tell you that black beans, brown rice and non-exotic fruits/vegetables bought in season are MUCH cheaper than a $5 trip to McDonald's or Taco Bell three times a day. And the beans/rice/vegetables diet has the added advantage of being nutritionally dense instead of calorically so.
Poor people also smoke, drink alcohol and do drugs at much higher rates than the general population. Is this because ciggies are cheaper than air, gin cheaper than water and drugs cheaper than jogging for endorphins? Does Mr. Brownell not understand that the same people who make poor money/employment/education choices often make poor dietary/substance consumption choices as well? But because he, an important Yale faculty member, is obese, he cannot see the general impulse-control problems that rule poor people's lives.
Brownell is right that we're genetically programmed to want high concentrations of calories. Where he's so wrong it hurts is that he believes the producers, not the consumers, are at fault when eaters overindulge. Again, being obese himself, he probably really believes that he's not in control when he's stuffing Malomars down his gullet.
Bottom line to Kelly Brownell's "science:" People are so dad-blamed stupid that they eat whatever's advertised on TV. They're just zombies with a taste for Big Macs instead of human flesh. Parents are powerless to refuse their children's demands for Ding Dongs and Frosted Flakes. Food companies must quit selling the high-calorie items that are their most popular, or governments must start suing them, a la the tobacco industry.
Moronic. Mr. Brownell needs to start where the real responsibility lies: In his own (obese) mouth.
Book Description
Some of the finest writing and reporting on the events of September 11 was done by Der Spiegel, Germany's magazine of record. With its main office in Hamburg, base of operations for terrorist ringleader Mohamed Atta and many of the others, Der Spiegel's journalists were on the front lines of the earliest investigation into the identities of those who, on a cloudless summer's morning, brought Holy War to America. The award-winning team from Spiegel was also at Ground Zero, talking to people, gathering stories, interviewing survivors, seeking the words that might express the interconnections of horror and heroism. The words came to them from those who had been inside and somehow gotten out, and take us as close as we can get to what happened. Combining first-class investigative journalism and writing of extraordinary clarity, Inside 9-11 is a heartbreaking and gripping reconstruction of the events that changed us all. No book can encompass what took place on 9-11. But here is one that gives it human dimension.
Customer Reviews:
You are there!.......2006-02-14
I read this book soon after it was published in hard cover and to this very day I occasionally think back to the accounts of that horrible event documented in this dazzling recounting of the last day and days in the lives of the people involved.
Not only does it offer the reader painful moment by moment insight into the loss of so many innocents but also takes you through the planning and unstoppable march of the terrorists toward their personal obliteration.
This is not a book to speed read. It is best to absorb, reflect and wonder why, Dubya, why?
Truely heart rendering.
Page-turner .......2005-09-19
For those that want detail and inside facts that are missing from other books on this topic, this is the book to read. It lets you look into the last hours of the poor victims and also the criminals. Fast pased, though you may have to put the book aside to gather your emotions from time to time. I've read several books on this tragedy, but this one gives interesting facts that other books did not touch on.
The floor gets extremely hot and the staircases are collapsing.......2005-07-23
After the recent London underground bombing attack [juli 2005] my hometown bookshop displayed, on a special table, literature about terrorism. Here I found 9/11. I wanted to buy it allthough I hesitated, was I ready to read this? Once reading I finished it within days. The German writers-team of Der Spiegel took me through the stories of all kinds of people who were linked directly to 9/11. They interviewed members of the New York Fire Department and people who worked in the Twin Towers and how they all tried to resist the inferno after the planes hit. You also get acuinted with the hijacker's and their dark years before they attacked, as well as persons who knew them well, like landlords, co-workers, friends and family. Every person somehow comes alive by perfect narration, and many details are moving. Its very personal, which makes it touchable. The writers convinced me they are born writers. I can really recommend this book. It gives faces, like me and you, to a very bad event of the recent past. And last but not least, it presents insight in how different people cope with the aftermath of 9/11.
A reinforcement of stereotypes.......2005-07-11
This book starts out interestingly enough, drawing us into the lives of characters whose lives were about to be so tragically affected by the horrendous events of Sept. 11, 2001.
Unfortunately, it gradually deteriorates into that familiar litany suggesting that all Americans are self-sacrificing heroes, and most Muslims are murderous, manipulative, shady characters.
An appalling ignorance of cultural differences -- for example the importance of the Qu'ran, or respect for women that is demanded by Islam -- is demonstrated by the authors. Instead, these are brushed aside as strange quirks of a secretive cult.
If you want a read that confirms the stereotypes of Americans as uniformly brave and caring of others, and Muslims as cowardly terrorists, this would be an excellent book.
If, however, you want a more balanced account of the bigger picture, I'm sure (I hope) there must be better, less-biased information available.
If you must read this, read with awareness of pro-American faultless flag-waving patriotism.
A disappointing piece of flagrant propaganda.

Bla bla bla. Read "Inside Job" by Jim Marrs and watch the DVD "9/11 In Plane Sight", maybe you'll learn the truth!
Book Description
Flash! Ping! Whiz! Pop! Boom! Bang! Crash!Such are the sights and sounds of modern youth ministry. We look for the bigger, the louder, the brighter. And we work long and hard to make our ministry the biggest, the loudest, the brightest. But look out and listen up: God is not caught up in sound and fury. And he doesn't want to see youth workers disengage--letting the momentum define their purpose. Mike Higgs, reflecting on more than two decades of work with youth, thinks the greatest need among youth workers today is a reminder of who we are. We need to set aside the distractions of an emphasis on performance and focus instead on connecting with God in his work in us, our students and other youth workers. When a renewed spirit shapes our work with youth, our ministry will become less a muddled chorus of strategies and targets, and more a symphony of purpose and practice.

Book Description
Everyone hopes for a rewarding and fulfilling career, but the day-to-day reality can be just the opposite. The routine of our jobs, office politics, and problematic projects can often be the cause of frustration, worry, and disappointment. The quest to find personal satisfaction, much less pride in our work, can be daunting.
It doesn’t have to be that way. According to Nancy O’Hara, we can find meaning in our jobs—but the first thing we have to do is look within ourselves. Grounded in principles of Zen Buddhism and full of real-life stories,
Work from the Inside Out presents a simple plan to reclaim your job and your life—and ultimately find the ability to truly love what you do.
Customer Reviews:
A workbook for being happy with the work you have now.......2003-02-28
Nancy O'Hara's book is an excellent guide to finding satisfaction at work - including your current employment (for those who prefer to stay or do not have an option to leave) or planning on new employment/career.
The book is a slow read - there are numerous exercises which take time and are meant to be part of the self discovery process. I recommend reading the entire text first before doing the exercises; it will help you better understand the logic and flow.
If you're looking for a quick fix or career guide, this isn't the book for you. If you are looking to change your own attitudes and action toward your work, this is ideal.
I found it excellent.
A good book to self-revelation, true and honest........2003-01-27
It took me awhile to finish reading this book. Not because it is boring, but I'd rather to read it thoroughly. I'd like to enjoy the exercise Nancy offers us, to take one day at a time, to take one step at a time for even the smallest change I decided to make. I successfully made an honest confession to myself and finally found a path of life that I was longing to find, both on my career decisions and personal life. This is a simple book that requires your patience, sincerity, honesty and compassion to get through our denial stage and to finally find our "true" decision out of so many choices in life. Read it full-heartedly, be honest and consistent... then, you'll find your way!
