Excellent for the big cat enthusist........2006-06-28
This book is a excellent reference for the person who wishes to learn about the "Big" Cats and the "Great" Cats. It goes into detail on all species including sub-species, range, habitat, behavior, the status on threatend species and the tragedy of now extinct species. Superb photography and graphs make this book the perfect addition for your library. The references section of this book also points out other publications which would be benificial to the reader
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Big Cats all the way! HEY!.......2005-07-27
This is among the best books I've ever read. It has my top 8 most favorite animals, the eight big cats, in it, the information is etched in terrific print and detail, you can learn tons from it, and the photos are absolutely glamourous. There are few, if any, large cats I have seen photographed that are more beautiful than the ones in this book. Any cat lover should buy it. By the way, here are the eight big cats, in the order I like them(I love them all, but this is just how MUCH) Okay then, my lineup! Here goes:
1. Lions and Lionesses
2. Tigers and Tigresses
3. Jaguars and Jaguaresses
4. Leopards and Leopardesses
5. Cougars and Cougresses
6. Snow Leopards and Snow Leopardesses
7. Cheetahs and Cheetahesses
8. Clouded Leopards and Clouded Leopardesses.
Sensing a trend here? If you are, good. You want to learn and love the beautiful and majestic animals that are the big cats? Buy this book. It's as good as they get. At least in some ways.
BIG CATS.......2000-03-04

Out of Print.......2006-11-18
This is a beautiful book that is now out of print. If you like big cats you'll like looking at the amazing work by Guy Coheleach. If you don't own it already you'll have to buy it used. Try and find a good copy and enjoy. I did.
Excellent Illustrated Reference on the Big Cats.......2003-07-08
This book is a large format - approximately 12" x 12" - heavily illustrated book in the genre commonly called "coffee table books". It goes beyond most such books, though, in having text that is even more compelling than the illustrations.
The book includes chapters on each of today's large predatory cats - puma, jaguar, leopard, lion, tiger, cheetah, snow leopard, and clouded leopard. Each chapter includes many illustrations by Guy Coheleach; most are full color paintings, though there are also many black and white sketches.
The paintings are detailed and beautiful, but I found Nancy Neff's text to be even more valuable. Each chapter provides information on the physical characteristics, fossil history, and behavior of the species, along with information on its current status and how it got there; in addition to the pictorial illustrations, there are very nice diagrams that illustrate the text. In addition, there is a table at the beginning of every chapter giving some relevant statistics, along with a map showing the current and historical distribution of the species and its subspecies. I particularly liked the fact that much of the information is presented in a consistent way across all the species, so I can, for example, compare the length of a jaguar to that of a tiger without fearing that this information might have been omitted for one or the other species.
The 244 page text, also includes excellent introductory chapters covering general topics such as the evolutionary history of the cats. At the end of the book, there's a brief explanation of biological nomenclature, and a glossary, bibliography, and index, as befits a scholarly work. This book may eventually be displaced from your coffee table, but it will remain a treasured reference on your bookshelf for a long time.

Book Description
For generations, four Clans of wild cats have shared the forest according to the laws laid down by their warrior ancestors. But the ThunderClan cats are in grave danger, and the sinister ShadowClan grows stronger every day. Noble warriors are dying—and some deaths are more mysterious than others.
In the midst of this turmoil appears an ordinary house cat named Rusty . . . who may turn out to be the bravest warrior of them all.
Customer Reviews:
A brilliant begining!.......2007-10-10
This is an excellent begining to my absolute favorite series in the world. When I first got this book it was because I kept seeing ads for it, so I decided to get it just to keep the ads happy. I fell in love with the book, and back then I didn't know about its sequels. A couple years later I got the next five books in the series. I read them all. Now I own every book and have read the first series 3 or 4 times, the second series twice, and I am eagerly anticipating the next books to come. For people wondering "Hmmm... Should I buy this?" GET IT! It is a wonderful series and I encourage people to buy it. I won't summarize the book because I wouldn't be able to do it any credit. Besides plenty of other people have written descriptions of it. All I can say is that this book is worth the money, and that this is a book that I will cherish forever. I love this series!
P.S. - I know it says "A kid's review". Please don't pay attention to that, I'm not some 5-year old that thinks kitties are cute. And I don't think that many "kid's review" people are, so don't shoot this review down, just because of that title. I enjoy the books for what they are, not because their names are adorable and I want to hug them all because they're fluffy wittle kittens. (I would like to hug them though, and the names ROCK! They'd bite me for it though, oh well...)
A very Good start to a very good series.......2007-10-01
Any cat lover or animal lover should read this series! My favorite thing to do after school is to sit on my bed, my cat curled up next to me, and read a warriors book. This book is a great start, explaining everything and getting you set up for the rest of the series. I am currently reading the new prophecy book #2, Moonrise. If you are just starting the series, here's something you should know: you have to read the books in order! And DON'T read the backs or the character lists of books ahead of you! I made the mistake of looking at the character list of the new prophecy book #4 (Starlight?) when I was reading book #4 of the regular Series, Rising Storm, and saw something that you will find out in the 6th book, Darkest Hour. This is a very good start to a very good series!
Start of a series that will last you years........2007-08-31
This book takes the view of a cat, Rusty, as he is accepted into ThunderClan, a group of warrior cats. Two villans, one on the outside, one traitor in the clan. Suspenseful, shocking, and action are all over this book. Not only does it end with Firepaw (formerly Rusty, now a warrior apprentice) becoming a full warrior, it leaves you hanging with the dangerous deputy, Tigerclaw, watching intendly on young Fireheart and the evil Brokenstar banished, but plotting. It leaves you itching for the future books, and starts a series that will make you read nonstop.
Predictable, but Fun.......2007-08-28
If you picked up this book and read the summary and are expecting animals with magical powers, then look away. While `Warriors' are about wild cats living in clans, the names of the clans do not mean cats are water masters or wind mages. They are wild cats who live in clans, and that's about it. Nothing much special.
Rusty, a typical house pet, or `Kittypet', dreams about hunting and eating mice (a la Tag from `The Wild Road', etc), while Smudge, his cat friend, will eventually be neutered and spend his time lazing around (a common neuter myth). Rusty eventually walks into one of the Clan's Territory, Thunderclan, and runs into Graypaw. Soon enough, the two become friends and Rusty is sent to the leader of Thunderclan, Bluestar, who admits Rusty into the group due to the fact that the clan needed more warriors, and Rusty is now Firepaw. Him being at a clan with cats who despise Kittypets, Firepaw meets many challenges, especially when something sinister lurks in ambitious Tigerclaw. And the obvious-dark-clan-of-the-forest Shadowclan.
This book, while very, very predictable (no joke, a child will have this book figured out), was very interesting to read, and actually grips you to the end, even though Firepaw was a sugary sweet hero who seems to know what is going on while the others don't. Flaws, while small, affect the series as a whole. For one,
(-) Bluestar needs more warriors for her clan, yet is fine with the fact that only one cat joined her clan. Why not send scouts to recruit more Kittypets?
(-) The `Fire alone can save our clan' bit is obvious. We all know what this is referring to.
(-) The obvious characters who will nonetheless be bad (Longtail's dark pelt, Tigerclaw's dark pelt, Darkstripe's dark pelt and dark name; not to mention Shadowclan).
(-) The big one: inbreeding. If the clans were really big, that would be understandable, but these are wild cats...well, wild cats with human qualities and no, no wild cat will bunch up in a group like this, but this is a book. Even so, I notice that if you have such a little group of cats together like this, it won't be long until there would be some inbreeding going on, so isn't it kinda obvious that you need cats from different clans, and Kittypets, too, to prevent something like this happening?
These flaws aside, I'm sure `Warriors' will suit your needs, even though it's a predictable book. I liked it, nonetheless.
Pick it up and you can't put it down. You will love it. By a cat freak........2007-08-23
I won't say anything about the story (there are enough reviews already) except that it's about a kittypet (house cat) named Rusty that feels attracted to the wild forest. He eventually joins ThunderClan, one of 4 Clans, and becomes the apprentice Firepaw. Each book has its own great plot, and one big mystery that continues to fold out throughout the whole series. It's full of suspense, intrigue, mystery, action, friendship, grief, happiness, death, excitement (about... um... A LOT)... and of course cats! Each new book is better than the last. I have all of them except the New Prophecy (a runner-up series) #6 Sunset and the Power of Three (3rd runner-up) The Sight. Read them all. You'll be hooked. Then, after reading Warriors and at least some of The New Prophecy get Warriors Field Guide (contains spoilers!) and when you've finished Dawn (TNP #3) read the manga (The Lost Warrior). You'll become a HUGE fan. Oh, and a warning: if you buy a set or something with the first four, DO NOT, by any circumstances, read the fourth one without having the fifth one close by (I won't say why). MAKE SURE you have it ready. Oh and yes, I feel horrible that there's only 5 stars. This one should have, like, a bazillion. BUY ALL OF THEM! Warriors 4ever!

Uh-oh-it's time for Sunday dinner at Aunt Frieda's. That means one thing-an evening with mean old cat Purlina. But the pets' tussle over a Turkey Tidbit leads to a wild romp through the house no one will soon forget!
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-07-11
I was so excited to see another title in the McDuff series, a beloved set of books in our house. Unfortunately, Rosemary Wells has not stayed with her original illustrator. One look at the pictures and I didn't even want to buy this book. It's too bad. We'll stick with the 2 sets of the rest of the McDuff books.
Great New Adventure.......2007-02-15
We own and love all of our McDuff books. Our only disappointment with this new book is that we miss the old McDuff. He is updated and doesn't look the same as the McDuff in the earlier editions. My children noticed right away and they prefer the original McDuff. None the less we still enjoyed the new adventure with the New McDuff.
Great book for my 4 and 7 year old.......2007-01-19
Illustrations live up to other McDuff books.. as does the story. We have a cat, so the description of the cat and dog made both my boys laugh. I hope she writes more!
McDuff books.......2006-03-09
I have collected each book as it was published. I love the stories, and especially the illustrations, which seem to be done with real Westies as models because the expressions and body positions are so true to life.
McDuff's Wild Romp.......2005-10-02
A little disappointed, as I don't think it's of the same quality as the other McDuff books. Still fun read for kids, however!

A *coffee table* book with beautiful photos by Art Wolfe, one of the best US nature/wildlife photographers. It gives basic descriptions of different wildcat species , commenting on general conservation issues in the last two chapters. It's worth buying just for the photos alone.

Book Description
Sleek, stealthy, powerful, and beautiful, the tiger has always evoked awe, fear, and utter fascination. Once undisputed lord of vast stretches of Asia, India, and Indonesia, the tiger now stalks a sadly diminished realm, despite the best efforts of dedicated conservationists all over the world. Some strains are extinct; all are threatened. But, as this dramatic volume demonstrates, the species has lost none of its mesmerizing appeal.
Glorying in more than 100 stunning full-color photographs, The Year of the Tiger combines the talents of two gifted, knowledgeable men: National Geographic veteran Michael "Nick" Nichols, who has been described as the Indiana Jones of photography, and writer Geoffrey Ward, a tiger admirer ever since his youth in India. Together, they have created an engrossing, unforgettable portrait of this magnificent creature, featuring many images of tigers in the wild never before captured on film.
Here are arresting visions from Southeast Asia and Siberia, along with remarkable and unprecedented photographs that reveal the hidden life of an Indian tigress, named Sita, and her cubs. Over a period of two years, Nichols visited the tigers, documenting Sita's unflagging efforts to feed and safeguard her young. To obtain his extraordinary shots, Nichols tracked the tigers on elephant-back through rough terrain and more than once risked his life to bring back a unique record of their lives.
Here too is a gallery of tigers in captivity, heartbreaking in its juxtaposition with their wild brethren. For whether they're entertaining Las Vegas crowds or living in the relative security of a first-rate zoo, these are animals who have lost -- or never learned -- the skills that would allow them to survive in the wild. And yet they too have inherited all the majesty and wonder that mark their breed -- and may perhaps be the last, best hope for the most endangered of today's great cats.
Stunning in its visual appeal, sobering in its message, The Year of the Tiger is at once a vivid celebration and a vital call to arms on behalf of a creature whose very existence is menaced by mankind's encroachment on its delicately-balanced environment. It's a book for anyone who cares about preserving our world's astonishing diversity, and for anyone who's fallen under the tiger's spell -- and that, it's safe to say, is everyone.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful for Tiger lovers.......2000-05-03
This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves tigers. It is packed with spectacular photos of tigers, most in their natural environment. There are also some pictures of other wildlife & of native peoples.
There are pictures of tigers with their cubs, ready to pounce & many close-ups. Sadly, there are others of tigers in captivity. I loved the pictures of the white tigers especially a rare one with orange stripes instead of black.
If you can tear yourself away from the pictures the text is equally impressive. The author tells of his adventures in national parks throughout Asia.
He also discusses the plight of tigers & other animals of the area being killed for there furs or horns and what is being done to protect them. There is a list of conservationists in the back if you want to help.
Excellent.......2000-04-01
I thought that this book was remarkable in the explanation of the year of the tiger and with what cultures that it pertains to.

I wanted to draw more realistic cats
and this book showed me that I needed to start with the head shape
and not the ears. There was not a lot of writing, just good step-by-step instruction. From my first drawing with this book, my drawings have improved. I highly reccomend this book!

Book Description
When Annie's cat disappears, she attempts friendship with a variety of unsuitable woodland animals. The borders of the pages foretell the emergence of spring and the birth of kittens.

A Must Read.......2007-07-25
If I had to choose just one of Jan Brett's stories, this is the one I would pick. The frames around the illustrations include small pictures of the upcoming plot.
The story is interesting, the illustrations are rich and detailed, and the hints increase the interest factor for the adults reading the text to children.
Beautiful illustrations - and Real nature.......2007-04-04
I grew up in the West and around wild animals (as well as domesticated ones). I hesitated to purchase this book because I was concerned that it would present wild animals as "cute" and safe, which is not a lesson that I want my children to learn. I want my children to respect and love nature and animals, but certainly don't want them to assume that any animal is going to be safe to be around, especially a wild animal. Add in the fact that feeding wild animals (other than birds) is not encouraged, and I was nervous. I don't want my children to have unrealistic and potentially dangerous ideas about how safe they are in nature/around wild animals.
However, the book shows that the wild animals are just that - wild. And Annie recognizes that and doesn't try to tame them. In the end, Annie's cat returns with kittens, something I remember our cats doing while we were growing up - a wonderful surprise.
This book is obviously a wonderful flight of fancy and I know my daughter really enjoys it. And I also know that if she sees an elk while we're camping, she's not going to try to pet it! Let alone, a mountain lion or bear or cow moose.
What Is WIld???.......2007-03-09
I have purchased a few of ANnie and the Wild Aimals. It is also a book that I take to read to children in and out of school. Highly 'reco'
Scary message?.......2005-09-29
The art work in this book is fabulous. But one of the messages - wild animals are very scary I am not sure I like. I bought it but will donate it to the library rather than giving to my 3-yr old granddaughter. She is being raised with a love and yes respect for all of nature's creatures and I think this went just a little too far for little ones.
One of our favorite books.......2004-01-30
Our daughter has enjoyed this book since she was less than a year old. It has wonderful, expressive pictures of animals that come out of the woods to feast on the muffins that Annie puts out. Annie hopes to find an animal to replace her cat that went missing during a snow storm, but none of them is friendly and cuddly as her cat was.
Meanwhile, in the band of graphics around the margin of each page, we see the missing cat, and other animals that are yet to appear in the story. This is an amazing way to show things that may be happening even when we don't "see" them. It gives plenty for the person reading to point out and discuss, or the story may be breezed through when it's one of several that a child wants to hear.
Several story lines are wrapped together in this relatively short book -- the disappearance of Annie's cat and her search for a replacement, the strange behaviour of her cat and its final explanation, the succession of wild beasts that come out of the woods to eat corn muffins (!), and through it all, winter's slow thaw and the eventual arrival of spring. None of it is overplayed; it all just fits together naturally.
Book Description
Did you know that European royalty once used cheetahs to hunt deer, or that caracals can capture birds by leaping six and a half feet straight up into the air from a standing start? Have you ever wondered whether domestic cats really do land on their feet when they fall, or how Canada lynx can stalk their prey in the winter without falling through the deep snow?
Wild Cats of the World is a treasure trove of answers to questions like these, and many others, for anyone who's interested in learning more about the world's felids, including the ones with whom we share our homes. Mel and Fiona Sunquist have spent more than a decade gathering information about cats from every available source, many of them quite difficult to find, including scientific papers, descriptions of hunts, archeological findings, observations by naturalists and travelers, reports from government agencies, and newsletters from a wide variety of organizations. Weaving information from these sources together with their own experiences observing wild cats around the world, the Sunquists have created the most comprehensive reference on felids available. Each of their accounts of the 36 species of cat contains a description of the cat, including human interactions with it, as well as detailed data on its distribution, ecology and behavior, status in the wild, and efforts to conserve it. Numerous photographs, including more than 40 in full color, illustrate these accounts.
Ranging from the two-pound black-footed cat to the five-hundred-pound tiger, and from the African serval with its satellite-dish ears to the web-footed fishing cat of Asia, Wild Cats of the World will fascinate and educate felid fans of any stripe (or spot).

The definitive source for cats big and small.......2007-01-10
This is the most comprehensive reference on wild cats I've yet seen. This is not just a picture book of cats, although there are wonderful plates of all of the cats discussed (even the elusive golden cat). This is an encyclopedic tome offering information about range, habits, food, etc.

To have a knowledge on wild cats.......2006-04-17
I haven't seen a textbook this big since my college psychology book a few months back. Anyway, this is a great deal. Almost every aspect of almost every wild cat living in this world is here. Even the Appendices help. Highly recommended for those who are interested in lions, tigers, cheetahs, pumas, etc.
Wild Cats of the World.......2006-02-22
It is a very information book giving black and white and color photos. It is a good reference book for people who do work with predators and for anyone who would like to know about relatives of the domestic cat. The format of the book is an encylopdeia format and it is fairly easy to read.
Excelent book.......2005-09-28

Great source of information.......2001-12-20
No bigger than this book is, it is a great source of information on large cats. Complimented very well with fantastic photography by Tom Brakefield. Gives general home ranges with maps of these beautiful cats' countries. One of the few books that is accurate as to their habits. And has a very nice reference list in the back of the book. In case this interests anyone.
