5 out of 5 stars touching and sweet.......2007-04-25

This is a truly sweet and touching collection of stories about love, good conduct, trust, and living fully. One of the main themes is following your "highest right" and basing your actions on this ideal. In short, these stories are excellent entertainment and also provide good food for thought.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting bedtime reading .......2006-02-03

This Hampton Roads reprint is an anthology of five small books written from the viewpoints of five sets of ferrets. Bringing these creatures' accounts under the roof of one book makes perfect sense here, because this really is one story. Furthermore, even as a sum of five books, Curious Lives is only 371 pages long.
This book is best read aloud at bedtime with your kids, spouse or lover. Its very nature and purpose entices the reader into a magical time zone to cuddle vicariously in the warmth of being cloaked in glistening soft fur.
It is undeniably wholesome; uplifting and inspiring without being sappy or preachy; poetic without being narcissistically grandiloquent. Though the ferret characters are endearing and tender, the author never succumbs to a facile cutesiness in his storytelling. Disney Films, Steven Spielberg and other purveyors of sentimental children's fare stand to learn a lot from Bach's honest, lucid story-telling and genuine wonderment at the deceptively simple things in life.
This particular reviewer had an unusually easy time suspending disbelief in order to embrace these ferrets' curiosity, love of the moment, psychologically realistic musings, and joyful message. This is saying a lot, given this reviewer's customary tone-deafness for other people's fantasy, hard-boiled cynicism toward magical thinking, suspiciousness of stories with a message, and difficulty tracking most visual descriptions.
I'd recommend saving this treat for a "cold and stormy night", accompanied by a soulful basso continuo of distant train song. Envelop yourself and your rapt audience in fur, whiskers and sweet thoughts.

4 out of 5 stars Action packed moralistic Chronicals.......2005-11-15

Years ago, when I read Jonathan Livingston Seagull, I loved it and subsequently read the other books that Richard Bach wrote. It was exciting to me to find Bach's new book, a single volume of all five novels in the Ferret Chronicles, a world populated by admirable ferrets living by their code of ethics "The Courtesies". Some of the mottos that the ferrets live by are, the more ideas you have, the more shall you be given; you give who you are, the money follows - what you do with the money, there's a different test; we find our happiness only when we follow what we most love in all the world.
The chronicles are action packed tales about creativity, heroism, courage, and living a life for all to benefit.

Book Description

This is Stormy Ferret's story. Cargo pilot, captain of an Air Ferrets SkyFreighter, she had earned her name by delivering her freight on time through every weather the night could set against her. Her destiny, she thought, was her dependability. That was true until, on a run south from Seattle to Salinas, she plunges into a supernatural tempest like nothing she has ever known.

Flying north in his sleek FerrJet, Captain Strobe Ferret hits equally violent weather. As chief pilot of the giant MusTelCo, his long experience at the controls had taught him to accept whatever the sky set before him. He had adjusted to life alone in the wild pure arena of air.

The two pilots meet by chance in the most powerful twin storm ever to sweep Airway Victor 23, her voice in the night helping him survive, his voice helping her. Coincidence turns to destiny as they battle through the clouds toward an unscheduled landing and a meeting that will forever change their lives -- and the lives of thousands of others.

Air Ferrets Aloft is a tale of skill and commitment, of powerful coincidence set in motion by unseen forces from another dimension, of the life-changing consequences when like souls meet, of love discovered after all hope for it had passed.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2007-03-11

Another tremendous book by Bach. As a Bach fan for years and a ferret lover too, I find these stories inspiring and touching.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for both ferret lovers and pilots........2004-08-04

I have been a keen ferret lover and my father is a pilot, so this book gives something for both. While the pilot vocabulary can be difficult for those with little experience in flying, the story is simple and enjoyable. I like to think of Baxter as the true hero, I named my own ferret after him. And the spritual transcendence of Bach's books like Jonathan Livingston Seagull are again reflected, which seem to parallel with concepts of the afterlife and how our departed loved ones are much closer to us than we think. A wonderful read with a very heartwarming narrative for both children and adults, and for those who simply love ferrets and flying. Thank you, Richard Bach.

5 out of 5 stars A Mystical Adventure.......2004-05-04

Air Ferrets Aloft is right up there with my other Bach favorites Illusions and Running from Safety. It is a gentle, beautiful story of destiny and true nature told in a wonderful way. I particularly like the audio version where Richard reads the story himself. I bought the book when it first came out and didn't read it until this week because, frankly, I'm not a fan of ferrets (sorry Richard!). Waiting was a mistake. Don't let the fact that this is a children's book or that you don't like ferrets, deter you. It is CLASSIC BACH.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful talking book!.......2003-09-12

I expect excellence from the author of Johnathan Livingston Seagull and this pleasantly read book is no exception. Like Johnathan, it has a child-like quality of storytelling that is amenable to the adult heart and ear as well. It is the first of the ferret series I've come across and I listen to it on my daily journey to and from home and work or school. The underlying themes of spiritual awareness and analogizing flight to an expression of spirituality is akin to JLS and a comfort to a reader who has read JLS to her children, husband, and grandchildren. I look forward to finding more unabridged tapes such as this as it is the only way this late-in-life law student has the time to listen to a good book anymore! My husband gets this tape next, then my eldest granddaughter. Or maybe I'll buy the CD for her...Who knows, with the fabulous descriptions of what goes on during flight she might opt to become a pilot some day. Great fun! Richard Bach has an excellent voice for this, as well. I'm hearing impaired and can understand him with the greatest of ease!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as Rescue Ferrets at Sea.......2002-10-15

I really enjoyed "Rescue Ferrets at Sea". In this second book, Bach spends too much time describing flying, the mechanics of flight and ALL the things that can go wrong during a storm. I agree with another reviewer: enough already.

And yet, there is much to redeem this book. I skipped over the overdone flying jargon and concentrated on the story. You might do the same.

If you think Jonathan Livingston Seagull is unclassifiable, wait until you see Richard Bach's latest, Rescue Ferrets at Sea. It's a fable that's simple as a children's book, but packing a message about spiritual self-empowerment. Rescue ferrets are, of course, the animal kingdom's answer to the Coast Guard, daredevils responsible for the safety of all nonhumans at sea. Our heroine, Captain Bethany Ferret, brings a reporter aboard the J-boat Resolute as she races to save calico cats, ships' rats, and the odd Indonesian parrot from imminent shipwreck near the Strait of Juan de Fuca (near the island where author Bach lives). The reporter, Miss Chloe, also happens to be a rock star--surely you've heard of Zsa Zsa and the Show Ferrets? But Chloe ("Call me Clo, please") is no spoiled, shallow celeb. She's got her paws on the ground (except when she's on a boat), and she's philosophical about showbiz. "If celebrity's magic, it's a screen, and I'm forever outside," says Clo. "I wish sometimes somebody would see me and not some... some mirror flash they want to be me." After 32 years as a bestselling author and human-potential pundit, Bach knows a bit about celebrity and its illusions.

Mostly, this is a straight-ahead action fable about ferret heroism and self-rescue. It has more characters than it can develop (and runelike passages in secret ferret language), because Bach has in mind about 60 more books in the Ferret Chronicles. Second in the series: Air Ferrets Aloft. --Tim Appelo

Book Description

Not many humans know. On the edges of every sea, the Ferret Rescue Service stands alongside the Coast Guard and Coastal Patrol of any country that claims an ocean shore. Just as it is the job of humans to rescue human lives at risk in storm and shipboard disaster, so it is the job of ferrets to rescue seagoing animals.

In this world of committed, courageous ferrets, Captain Bethany Ferret stands apart. A kit from humble beginnings, she rises quickly to command the swift J-boat Resolute, once derelict, which she herself has rescued from the rocks. Bethany and her crew measure the days by storms at sea, by ships in distress and by lives saved from tempest.

When the alert siren shrieks in the midnight storm, Bethany shakes away sleep and races to the bridge. "Boa, start Engine One, start Engine Two." She does not inquire whether the Chief Engine ferret is ready for action on a quarter-minute warning. She switches to the ship's loudspeaker: "Topside crew, paws on deck. We have a vessel in distress, this is not a drill."

Engines bursting awake, searchlights blazing, crew and boat battle swells and screaming wind to reach desperate creatures in black water, the lines between life and death now drawn only by the limits of the ferrets' courage.

From ceaseless boat-drill practice to instant decisions on the broken deck of the Deepsea Explorer, Rescue Ferrets at Sea is a tale of the pursuit of ideals, of the value of teamwork, an action portrait of those who believe that the rescue of life is the highest calling.

Ferret lovers - any animal lover - will adore this book. Bach, being a ferret owner, captures ferrets in all their wonderful glory and personifies them as rescuers of shipwrecked animals.

The Coast Guard rescues humans - but what about any animals on board? Why the Rescue Ferrets, of course! It's a wonderful tale that will delight both young and old. I have all three books in the "Ferret Chronicles" and can't wait till he writes the next one.

Very well written, the story moves right along and Bach's attention to detail makes you feel like you're right there in the action. Great job, Mr. Bach :)

PS: ferrets are not vicious and my five have never bitten anyone. However, if the idiot in the prior review ever met mine I wouldn't stop them heh heh

"The ground thudded and trembled, the echoes again, as Cheyenne Jasmine Ferret cut a half-circle to stop, breathing hard, by Montgomery and his trusted mount Boffin. It was a familiar sight to all who lived beneath Montana's Sweetroot Mountains, these two ranchkits riding through the morning light, ever together, completely unalike. Montgomery has the deep stillness of the outdoors in his soul; Cheyenne Jasmine is less quiet within. He understands the thoughts of animals and the endless colors of a single mountain daisy. She watches movie after movie, drawn indoors by emotion and light. Kithood ends one morning when Cheyenne Jasmine climbs aboard the train out of Little Paw, destination Hollywood. Montgomery stays put, unwilling to leave the country and his future with animals. They do not realize they are in love until the moment she departs. In time, Cheyenne becomes Jasmine Ferret, the Jasmine Ferret, international film star, darling of the tabloids; Montgomery a sheep-whisperer, a rancher, and some suspect philosopher ferret. Years pass before they meet again, long after each has found the rewards of their separate callings. Yet the highest reward, they discover, waits for them both together, and it's one that they will share for the rest of their lives. Rancher Ferrets on the Range is a tale about sacrifice and longing, fulfillment and success, and a love that waits patiently, sure in the knowledge it will find a way home. "

4 out of 5 stars Ferret Chronicles.......2007-01-20

This is amusing reading for those who enjoy adventure and/or flying. I'm not sure what the point of substituting ferrets for peoples means. However, once you accept this premise (i.e. the suspension of disbeief) then the story is much more enjoyable. This is almost more of a short story, than a book. The book is only about 135 pages. I like the author, Richard Bach. I have read many of his books, and have never been disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Special story.......2003-10-02

On earth Shamrock Ferret has always answered questions almost from the day she was born so it is not surprising that she especially enjoys responding to those inquiries that seem impossible to obtain a reply. Her upbringing became her work and her skills have earned her a reputation as a successful sleuth. What Shamrock does is sit in the Cases Unsolved Chair to ponder the puzzle until she finds the solution.

Having just succeeded in solving the Case of the Curious Patterns for local farmers she accepts a partnership with Mr. Burroughs. However, she also begins her most difficult mystery. She "sees" a forlorn ferret hopelessly moaning on a dying world seeking someone or some way to save the survivors of the Ferret war that has devastated his people. Sitting in her chair she begins to wonder if this vision is a shadow from the past reaching out to her for help.

Besides the cleverly designed time paradox (not explained here), readers will appreciate Richard Bach's latest tale that clearly cries for give peace a chance. The story line focuses on Shamrock and her use of logic, psychometry, cryptography, and patterns to solve mysteries. Yet with all this Mr. Bach insures his audience understands his message that war is a last resort not a first preemptive strike because of the full impact on the innocent reminiscent of as Animal Farm in relation to Communism.

4 out of 5 stars Jonathan Ferret -- a fable for our time...........2003-09-17

From the author of the indominatable Jonathan Seagull comes The Ferret Chronicles series. Bach still knows how to tell a fable and he's as charming as ever. An easy read. Fun to have on your shelf when the going gets rough. Great book to read on a lunch hour on a bad day. As refreshing as a walk in the woods. Okay so some of you may think it's corny but then apple pie and mom still warm my heart.

5 out of 5 stars A message of hope.......2003-09-13

I have always been a fan of Richard Bach. I constantly find myself drawn to the simplicity of his writing and the complexity of his message and this book is no exception.

My own life has been full of loss for the last several years. Loss of hope, loss of career, loss of my marriage, loss of trust in my world... all of these have conspired to rob me of my dreams. Picking up this book on a whim, I felt all my hopes come rushing back in to fill the void inside of me.

I have always (since I was a small child) dreamed of writing. I was never able to garner the courage to actually attempt it, and I couldn't ever explain to anyone why. Finally, after losing so much in my life I finally managed to gain the courage to reach out to my dream with both hands and chase it wherever it might lead. This courage is due in great part to Mr. Bach and this book, and I will be forever in his debt.

He captures the frustration and elation of the creative process beautifully. Yes, he writes simply, and yes at times he's a bit sappy. This is part of the charm and if you are too jaded or too cynical to appreciate it then I truly feel sorry for you.

Do yourself a favor. Buy this book. Read this book. Enjoy this book. If you are an aspiring writer, if you know an aspiring writer, or if you just simply love the simplicity of openly and honestly chasing your dreams you NEED this book.

4 out of 5 stars Finally! FERRETS portrayed as .......2003-04-25

I'm so sick of ferrets being portrayed as evil weasel is books. Ferrets are truly happy, fun-loving and gentle little souls. Bach, who owns several ferrets himself, obviously knows this. I love the concept of the Ferret Chronicles, and the drawings are lovely, but Bach's writing style is just a bit too simplistic for me. I understand that is part of his charm and the reason most people DO like his writing, but for me the storylines just didn't hold my interest. (Still, I bought them because I will buy anything in support of ferrets! Kudos to you, Richard!)

5 out of 5 stars For the Young Writer on Your Christmas List.......2002-11-12

Richard Bach's love of the creative process illuminates every page of this charming story. This would make a nice gift for any aspiring writer on your Christmas list but I think it would have a special resonance for younger writers (twelve to fourteen). This book neatly illustrates the idea that struggling to meet others' expectations just doesn't contain the satisfaction (or rewards) of honoring one's own muse. I wish Writer Ferrets existed when I was fifteen and got a "C" on a creative writing asignment. From that moment, I spent decades trying to raise that grade by writing what I thought others wanted to read. Like the main character in "Chasing the Muse" I found myself stuck and producing writing that had nothing to do with my own inner voice. Lucky for me I found a friend who showed me the error of my ways and later gifted me with this book to underscore her point. If you are a struggling (or blocked) writer, I think you'll enjoy a quiet hour or two with the "Writer Ferrets."

5 out of 5 stars A Book For Children Of All Ages.......2002-11-03

It isn't often I "gush" about a book, but I will about this one. Yesterday I opened to the first page of "The Ferret Chronicles - Writer Ferrets: Chasing the muse." I have just finished it.

This could well be classed a children's book, as could most books by Richard Bach: "Jonathon Livingston Seagull," "There's No Such Place as Far Away."

But this one, about a pair of ferrets and how they find their "muse" is both informative and inspirational. I would recommend it to any aspiring writer.

And, if it needs a childlike mind to read and enjoy it, then I must have such a mind, and I'm proud of it.

"Writer Ferrets: Chasing the Muse": by Richard Bach. A good book for all children, no matter what their age.

    Book Description

Ferrets make wonderful pets. They are very intelligent and quite clever. Today, ferrets are considered to be the third most popular companion pet in the U.S. They are fairly easy to care for and feed. They require frequent cage cleaning and should have annual vet check-ups to maintain their health. They are well worth the effort. Ferrets are quite entertaining with their antics. They love to play and interact with their owners and with other household pets. If you are considering becoming a ferret owner, please read this book. You will gain all the knowledge you need to be a wonderful ferret owner. This is a how-to manual, a hands-on reference book to assist ferret owners in the proper care and maintenance of their pet ferret. This book was written to be used as a guide, enabling you to provide the very best care for your ferret. It is written in everyday language that everyone can understand and includes a list of shelters and rescues nationwide, which are meant to help assist those shelters and rescues with more adoptions and donations. I tried to incorporate one or two shelters/rescues per state. This book offers information about some of the diseases and illnesses known to the ferret world. A second book is currently being written that will provide extensive, up-to-date information regarding ferret health care. Holistic approaches to treatment will be examined as well as surgical procedures, medications, and therapies for sick ferrets.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-09-11

This book is self published and the author acknowledges that she is not a ferret expert. Some of the advice could be dangerous to ferrets if followed. Potential purchasers (particularly those new to ferrets) would be advised to save their money on this one and buy "Ferrets for Dummies," widely considered by knowledgeable ferret owners to be the ferret "bible."

    5 out of 5 stars American Ferrets - A GREAT book.......2005-09-10

I have read Sharon's book and I found it to be very informative. Sharon is a wonderful person and a darn good ferret mom. Her book is very easy to read, it is good place to start as a new ferret owner, things are broken down and very easy to understand.

As far as the people leaving negative reviews, I am certain not a one of them has actually purchased the book. This is a group that has nothing better to do with their time than to harass a good person like Sharon and they will go to any lengths in order to do it. Not a one in the bunch could write a book yet they attack someone who has written a ferret are book so that should tell you a lot.

I HAVE SHARON'S BOOK AND IT IS A PART OF MY FERRET CARE LIBRARY AND IF I WANT TO KNOW SOMETHING, I WILL REFER TO IT BEFORE OTHER BOOKS OR MAGAZINES I HAVE.

    Sharon you did good gal!!!

In my opinion Amazon needs a better book review system that doesn't allow people who haven't purchased the book to come on here and leave such hateful remarks.

5 out of 5 stars Great supplement to ferret care literature.......2005-09-10

There is a lot of good information packed into this book. It's a great resource to have on hand in addition to Ferrets for Dummies. I highly recommend both books to any current or future ferret owners!

    5 out of 5 stars A Companion Book.......2005-09-10

American Ferrets is an excellent book to use in conjunction with the standard Ferrets For Dummies. It has generally good advice with stories to illustrate the points being made. It shares the experiences of the ferret-owned with its readers and I found it an enjoyable read.

    1 out of 5 stars Sorry.......2005-09-05

I was a member of the group american ferrets - and I was told I needed to buy this book. I am sorry to say that I did. Now I wish I hadn't. This book has nothing in it that is different. I feel that I wasted my money when I bought the previously recommended book, ferrets for dummies and there was nothing new covered in this book even tho they were published in differet years. I feel ripped off.

5 out of 5 stars Great book series...6 out in all as of 10/06.......2006-10-24

My 8 year old daughter, who is dog crazy, loves these books. She has read two and told me that if I ever see anymore, please get them for her for Christmas. I went on Amazon, and am delighted to have found four more in the series. These books have super cute illustrations sprinkled about every 3 -4 pages. Chapter sizes are great for a ten to fifteen minute read. Entire book is written from the dogs point of view. I enjoyed what I have heard her read aloud and I know my daughter would give these five stars. If you have a kid who loves dogs and is 7 to 9 years old or so, these are perfect!

    4 out of 5 stars A wonder light read.......2001-05-03

This title is a step above the average mass market series. The storyline is well developed and characters are clearly drawn. This is #2 in the series. Rosie (a grey mutt) and Fritz (an easily frightened German Shephard) are now puppies with a home. They will be staying together for a few days while Fritz's family is caring for a relative. At the same time a "niece" arrives at Rosie's house for a few days. The niece has the usual smells "hard candy and bubble gum", but there is another smell. It seems to be stronger by her backpack. The puppies soon learn that it is the smell of trouble. Rosie needs to find out the source of the smell before the two puppies end up back at the pound. The story does have a formula happy ending. This is a good cross over to chapters book. The illustration are nicely done and add to the enjoyment of the reading. The book will be of interest for light summer reading, as well as discussion material for young readers.
