Alexandra Day's modern classic Good Dog Carl has sold more than 200,000 copies, captivating countless readers with the lovable rottweiler Carl, endearing illustrations, and the tale's surprising silliness. The book begins with the mother saying, "Look after the baby, Carl. I'll be back shortly." Let the adventure begin! Carl looks out the window to make sure Mom is gone. Once the coast is clear, the baby crawls out of the crib and onto Carl's back. First stop? Mom's bed. Second stop? The top of the dresser where powder puffs are sported as hats. The infant--now in Carl's capable paws--slides down the laundry chute, swims in the fish tank, dances, raids the refrigerator, and makes a huge mess. Carl dutifully bathes the baby, cleans up the chaos, puts his charge back in the crib, and plays it cool when Mom comes home. "Good dog, Carl!" she says upon her return. A sweet, subtly absurd picture book that jubilantly illustrates the old adage, "When the cat's away, the mice will play." (Picture book)
Book Description
Available in paperback for the first time, the modern classic that introduced the beloved baby-sitting rottweiler to the world.
Customer Reviews:
Good Dog Book.......2007-06-27
This author shows her love and appreciation for a great big rottweiller. It is great to see a rottweiller shown in a positively interacting with a family. This is a must have book for anyone with small children and a beloved rottie.
Fantastic for getting kids talking........2007-06-14
I am a speech language pathologist currently working in a preschool program for children with language and hearing disabilities. Our team has found the Carl books to be a wonderful tool for evaluating and practicing language skills. If SLPs are looking for a good diagnostic tool for narrative and sentance structure, these books are a great way to go. The same holds true for parents who want to encourage expressive language development in their little ones.
PS - None of our clients (and many of them have severe developmental delays) have ever tried to drown themselves in our lobby fish tank. If your child seems inclined to do so, perhaps a lid on the tank would be helpful.
so cute.......2007-05-12
Great book for all ages. You can make up stories for each page as well.
Could Carl Babysit Me?.......2007-02-16
You read this story by reading the highly detailed pictures. The baby climbs out of the crib onto Carl's back. Carl then takes her on many
adventures: climbing onto Mom and Dad's bed, dressing up with Mom's
powder puff and necklace (Carl with a "hat" and necklace on is totally
funny), sliding down the laundry chute "slide", "swimming" in the fish
aquarium. Carl turns on the radio, and they dance in the living room.
Carl and the baby get bread and butter from the refrigerator for a snack.
Carl helps her make chocolate milk. Then he carries her to the bath tub and washes and dries her himself, seeing that she climbs back into the
crib.
Then Carl goes back through the house and cleans up the little
messes they made. When Mom comes home, baby is sleeping in the crib and
Carl is waiting beside it. He looks very submissive, and Mom praises him
for being so good.
This book is a delight because a young child can "read" it all the
years they are pre-reading children. The pictures are delighftully done
and quite detailed, so they can be viewed again and again with interest.
I particularly like it that Carl is portrayed as a gentle, big dog. We
all know some of the "bad dog" breeds can be quite gentle around little
children, and helpful to them, even.
I am glad I found this book and will be giving it to youngsters
as much as I can!!!
I think even the youngest can understand this book is "make believe"
and "baby and Carl couldn't really do these things". I was stopped short
from "riding" my favorite goat by my Dad's instructions. Later when I was
much taller, I figured out I could "ride" her by pretending as I was now
tall enough to not put any weight on her back (which was not a pony's).
I'm noticing the book is dedicated "To H.D., who has never let us
forget about Ponies".
Great little book.......2007-01-14
Love this book, not many words so me and my 2 year can make up a new story every time!!!

Book Description
Deep, deep down in their underground town, the prairie dogs live in harmony--until a mysterious, fluorescent, very fuzzy thing (otherwise known as a tennis ball) rolls down their hole. When the prairie dogs discover that they can pluck and pull the fuzz into fabulous fashions, their fear quickly turns to curiosity, then delight, then pure greed.
The frenzy that erupts threatens to tear apart the prairie-dog town forever. But when mean ol' Big Bark is kidnapped after taking all the fuzz for himself, the prairie dogs come to the rescue and remember the true meaning of community.
Customer Reviews:
LOVE IT!.......2007-09-16
I first read this book at a teacher workshop and fell in love with the story and the varied page formats. (Some pages unfold vertically to show the underground tunnels!) This is not only a fun book to look at, the kids giggled all the way through it as the plot unfolded. This could be used in reader's workshop to teach point of view, predicting, inferring, sound effects, or it could also be used to spur a discussion on friendship and cooperation. We did an author study on this sister authir/illustrator pair and the students love how they have a sense of humor and are a bit silly in their stories. I LOVE IT TOO! :O)
My kids teacher suggested this one!.......2007-05-02
This was a fun book! A dog drops a tennis ball down a hole which turns out to be the entrance to a prairie dog community. It surprises and scares them. They gather around chattering about to do; that is until Big Bark appears. He is a rather large prairie dog who has a bottle cap for a hat. Before he can do anything little pip squeak jumps forward and picks off some fuzz and starts playing with it. Pretty soon the whole colony starts playing with the fuzz and things get crazy. Soon more and more prairie dogs show up wanting fuzz and it runs out. Then they start fighting over it!
We liked this book and it's been a bedtime book every night since we bought it. The artwork is good and I think the author gave a funny presentation to the personalities of Prairie dogs. I particularly liked Big Bart's run in with an Eagle. "No more Big Bark! The crowd cheered "Yaaaaay!" "Don't yaaaaaay! He's one of us!" yelled Pip.
Again a great story and I can see the book will be well loved by my girl.
Fun to read.......2007-03-14
This is such a cute and clever story. It's great to see how all of the prairie dogs come together at the end. We have had this for awhile and both of my girls (4 and 7) still consider it a favorite.
The Great Fuzz Frenzy.......2006-11-06
This book was a joy to read. The illustrations were priceless. I never knew that prairie dogs were so much like humans!
a wonderful gift for any age "kid".......2006-10-12
This is a perfectly wonderful concept with super illustrations just waiting for a touch from the reader. It is impossible to read this book without laughing. Underlying lessons are as easy to take as a spoonful of sugar making the medicine go down!

Customer Reviews:
Truely owned by a Westie.......2007-10-02
Being allowed to live in the house that our 4 Westies control I found alot of truth in these pages. Yes you have to laugh when you remember that the name is different at your house but the same lines are repeated often.
The cover art is what really got my attention. Thank you David for another reminder of how much these wonderful white delights keep you hopping. Never, NEVER a dull moment.
3 year old boy humor.......2007-09-07
My husband and I were going to send this one back. We thought it was cute but that the subtle humor and irony would be lost on our 3 year old son. Luckily, the boy in question was rifling through the box and found it before we had a chance to return it. The first several readings got big belly laughs, and it remains a favorite in the bedtime lineup.
Fantastic!.......2007-07-11
This book is hilarious. Totally engaging. The pictures are a joy to behold, and the antics of both Fergus and his owner will strike a chord with dog lovers. I laugh out loud everytime I read this. Kids will love the pictures but adults can apprectiate the message as well.
He is a good boy!.......2007-06-08
Another good entry from David Shannon. I gave this to my neice for her birthday and her older sister, just out of kindergarten sat down and read it to all of us. Keep up the good work.
DS knows his Westies!.......2007-05-30
As a fellow Westie owner (Westhighland white terrier--that's what Fergus is), I must compliment Mr. Shannon not only on a well-told story, but on his perfect depiction of a Westie personality. Just like Fergie, they are all about fun, are always optimistic ("the People WILL give me their food if I wait long enough"), live totally in the "now"--no grudges held, & have definite opinions about what they like (ice cream--yes, I KNOW it's bad for them--, walks & car rides) & dislike (dry kibble & baths). We have had the pleasure of living with 2 Westies, Mike (1994-2006) & now Maisie (born in Aug. 2006), & David Shannon has captured the heart of them both in his drawings and in the text. Good boy, David!

Super Cute.......2007-04-12
This book is cute and the perfect bedtime story for my 2 year old. There are several "bedtime" plots among the Blue's Clues set and they all do a good job of easing into slumber land by coming to a peaceful place at the end of the story.
Blue's a Hit.......2007-03-02
I know Blue's biggest fan. His name is Jaylon and he's 19 months old. Blue can do no wrong and this book does not disaapoint. Steve and Blue take you through Blue's bedtime ritual. The steps are simple, the pictures are colorful, it's small enough to carry around and the book is sturdy enough to withstand eight teeth.
Blue goes to sleep...like all children do..........2007-02-12
A nice bedtime story for your child. She asks for Blue all the time.
Sleepy Time With Blue........2006-08-23
Good Night Blue is a great book to read prior to nap time or bed time. The book shows Blue going potty, brushing his teeth, and getting ready for bed. Children get a great story, and get to learn about all the things they need to do before going to bed.
The book is sturdy and well made, and is fun to read. My 2 daughters love this book.
Good NIght Blue.......2006-08-17
I am sure that every preschool child would like to have this book.

ASIN: 188804702X |
Book Description
This little book is intended primarily as a brief but comprehensive guide to puppy training. Consequently, it contains hints for socialization, temperament training and behavior modification as well as tips for teaching basic manners. Dr. Dunbar's lure/reward training techniques are certainly not limited to puppies. On the contrary, they have become the method of choice for instructing good-natured, but otherwise uneducated adult dogs.
Our best friendthe domestic dogis a social animal. It would be unfair and antisocial not to train it. How else could we communicate? Luckily, dogs can easily learn our language
if we teach them! Basically, training comprises teaching dogs ESLEnglish as a Second Languageso that our dogs will understand human words for doggy behaviors and actions.
Lure/reward training is de rigeur for training a wide variety of animals, including lions, tigers, killer whales, and grizzly bears, Over a hundred years ago, similar reward-based methods were the accepted practice for training all dogs and puppies. Unfortunately, in the twentieth century, the Trainers from The Dark Side inflicted a harsher regime of laborious, on-leash, push-pull, squish-squash, narrow-brained methods on unsuspecting owners and their dogs. Sadly, domination was the focus and the poor defenseless dog was viewed as an adversary in the training arena. Force is unnecessary and almost always counterproductive. Why treat your best friend like your worst enemy?
Welcome back to the historically-proven, so-old-that-it's-new-again, natural, common-sense, and enjoyable way to train your dogoff-leash, lure/reward, fun and games, dog-friendly dog training.
Dr. Dunbar's training techniques are altogether quicker, easier, gentler, more effective, and certainly considerably more enjoyable for you and your dog. And so without further ado, turn to the Good Manners section and begin training your puppydog right away. Lure/reward training techniques work like a treat!
Customer Reviews:
Money well spent! A Must Have!!!!!!.......2007-08-22
All I can say is that this book should go home with all new dog/puppy owners! It really is a must have, it's exactly what Dr. Dunbar say's "Efficient, Effective, Easy, Efficacious, Enjoyable, and Expedient". It's easy for kids to use too.
Sweet and simple.......2007-07-14
My dog is a product of Dr. Dunbar's training techniques. He is a dream dog! Consequently, I give his books to all my friends and family who have puppies. These books are easy to read and follow and best of all, they work!
Easy to follow and understand!.......2003-11-11
This book is written in a way that is down to earth and easy to understand, even for a first time dog owner. Dr. Dunbar's advice actually works! Just follow it and be consistent! It worked for my dog, it can work for yours too! Great pictures and even a training plan. You need this book!
What a fun and colorful book!.......2003-08-01
This book offers tons of practical advice. It has step by step photos with captions that describe exactly how to train your dog. It is entertaining and useful, cleverly written so it can be enjoyed by the whole family, adults and children alike. We followed the instruction outlined in the book and by the time our dog got to training school she was the star of the class.

Book Description
My cat Barney died this Friday. I was very sad. My mother said we could have a funeral for him, and I should think of ten good things about Barney so I could tell them...
But the small boy who loved Barney can only think of nine. Later, while talking with his father, he discovers the tenth -- and begins to understand.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2007-10-11
This is the best book I have ever found for helping a child deal with the death of a pet. This book made me cry, but in a good way. I loved all of Judith Vorst's books. She writes for both children and adults and bases her stories on her own family and life experiences. My children grew up with her books, and we still quote from them 30 years later, because it's just true that "sometimes, even mamas make mistakes," and "some days are like that - even in Australia." I highly recommend all of her books.
the tenth good thing about barney.......2007-07-28
I love this book even though the subject is difficult. I have sent many copies out to my friends who have lost their beloved animals.
Wonderful Book!.......2007-07-12
This is a great book by a great author! I highly recommend this book to comfort a child who experiences death of a pet or loved one. It's a children's book, but I have also given it to adults and they found it comforting.
keep one extra.......2007-05-30
I have kept an extra copy of this book around - to give away when someone loses a pet. I have taught school and worked in bookstores all my life, and this is one of the best books for anyone who would like comfort. Sensitive and caring.
One of My Favorite Books.......2007-04-26
This book, despite being written for children, is probably the world's most touching, sensitive, and well-written story about the loss of a pet. When a little boy's cat dies, he struggles to come to terms with it and leans on his family and best friend for support. By paying attention to the strory and its characters, a child can learn many important things about life. The characters talk a little bit about what happens physically with death and how nobody really knows what happens after it, but that some people believe in an afterlife and others do not. Also, the characters speak about some of the good things surounding death......how the kitty being buried will help to make the flowers grow (again, it doesn't go into any gorey details with it), for example. The book ends with the little boy listing off ten of the good things which he will always reember about the kitty he lost, leaving the reader with the sense that he will never really be 'lost' at all.

A Howell Dog Book of Distinction
Customer Reviews:
You need to flip through this book if you have a puppy.......2004-01-08
A friend on mine gave me this book, she currently has 6 dogs and havs used this book to train all of them. I really enjoyed the book. It was an easy read with very easy to understand methods, funny little comics, and it got right to the point. Grant it my Pup is only 11 weeks old and I'm still having some trouble with a few things with her, but not much. I suggest you give this book a whirl especially if you have read other books and feel they haven't helped much.
A must for new puppy owners!.......2003-05-23
So easy to follow & understand! And, the cartoons throughout are great!
Without this book, I would have been completely clueless when it came to getting our first puppy housebroken & trained. Because of this book, we now have two fantastic dogs (one who is 1 year and one at 6 mos. old). This book completely debunks so many age-old dog training myths - how to dicipline, not rewarding inappropriate behavior by accident...etc. I would have done a lot wrong without this book! Very humane, thoughtful & insightful into the world of puppies and dogs. If you've ever wondered "why does my dog do that?" you'll find the answer here. Bravo to the authors!
Wonderful!.......2001-10-09
This is one book that every dog owner, or potential dog owner, should buy! It doesn't matter if you have a Rottweiler, a Chihuahua, or just a good old Heinz 57 dog, this book is for all dogs. Cute illustrations and sound advice on how to make your dog the good doggie citizen of the year abound in this book. It addresses common issues like housebreaking, walking on a leash nicely, crate training, and much more. I highly recommend this book!
GOOD, but not GREAT........2001-05-10
This is a good, basic book about dog training. Some of the insite into why dogs do what they do and what they are really thinking is great information to have. But, if you are serious about dog training it will take more than just this one book to give you all the base knowlege you need.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in dogs though. The information it has is accurate and useful and the illustrations are fun and educational. I agree with the person who said it would be a great dog training book for younger children to start with. The illustrations make this book very understandable for everyone.
Add it to your collection for the pictures and basic information, but do keep reading because there are more comprehensive dog training manuals out there.
Great Entry into Dog Training.......2001-02-17
Best part is the simple approach with its cartoon art which illustrates comically the training point under discussion.
Parents with children would do well to get and use this book. Later on, however, probably like to move on to other, more detailed helps.

Book Description
When the Wild Calls
McKinley, a malamute, is a good dog -- he's reliable and trustworthy. Whether it's watching over the other dogs of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, or taking care of his human pup, Jack, McKinley never even thinks of letting anyone down -- until he meets Lupin. Lupin is a she-wolf and she's urging the dogs of Steamboat Springs to leave their domesticated lives and join her wild pack. And though she scares McKinley, he also finds himself drawn to her and the life of freedom that she offers.
For the first time, McKinley's loyalties are torn. Should he stay with his humans and continue to lead the dogs of Steamboat Springs? Or should he join the wolf and live freely, like his ancestors did? When the wild calls, what will McKinley's answer be?

Wolf and Dogs.......2007-05-24
This book is about a dog named Mckinley. It's told from his perspective of trying to save his wolf friend from a hunting dog. Mckinley and his dog friends find an injured wolf in the mountains above. The wolf, Lupin, is hiding from humans and their hunting dogs. Ironically, McKinley's owner Jack wants to find a wolf, and Mckinley has to make a decision: please his master or help his friend.
The book tells you that you can make new friends but don't forget your old ones. And the author tells you that protecting your friends will eventually reward you. I know this because Mckinley has to protect both Jack and Lupin. He almost forgets Jack in his efforts to save Lupin.
The perspective of McKinley's adventure makes The Good Dog a heartwarming story, confronting wolf and dog and revealing their friendship to each other. The Good Dog is amazingly written. The way Mckinley protects both Jack and Lupin is told with a fun perspective, clever dialogue, and McKinley's doggie friends popping in and out of the story. I would recommend this book to dog lovers, readers beginning operation K-9, or someone that just wants to find out a dogs thoughts.

The Good Dog by Avi.......2006-09-23
This was a really good book. I enjoyed it so much, I read it at least thrice and every time I re-read it is still a wonderful book. It gives you a look at the world through a dog's eyes. I think that every dog owner - no make that every pet owner, should read this book. Actually it would be enjoyable to even someone without a pet. Not only is this a great book for kids, but I think adults would even love this book!
Thanks Avi!
The Good Dog.......2006-06-12
This book, The Good Dog, is about a dog named McKinley who is the dog of a boy named Jack. McKinley has always been Jack's "good dog," but when news brakes out of a wolf named Lupin snooping around in town all dogs and hunters set out to kill this wolf and McKinley decides to help the wolf. When McKinley talks to the wolf, Lupin tells McKinley about the freedom that McKinley could have being away from his owners. McKinley now has to choose between being Jack's house dog or having a free life out in the wild.
I liked this book because the author allowed me to see the world from a dog's point of view. McKinley always calls his owners, "his people." The author also supported his vision by showing how the dogs open doors, communicate, and how they don't understand everything humans say. McKinley in one part put the words Jack was saying together, "backpack, me, wolf, hunting." It showed how McKinley was trying to put the "human words" together so he could understand what Jack was saying. This book also had a lot of thrill. When McKinley found the wolf, the wolf could've eaten him and it excited me on what was going to happen next. I loved this book.

Doggie Lovers Will Love Good Dog .......2005-10-10
I bought this book for my brother for his birthday specifically because he has West Highland Terriers like the dog on the cover. He also appreciates good artwork. When I got the book I showed it to my parents, who are also dog lovers, and we all giggled out loud at the wonderfully hilarious poems and the sweet, funny illustrations. The pictures are suitable for framing. The book is marvelous and it put a big smile on our faces, just like the smile on the dog on the last page! Oh yeah, my brother loved the book too, and couldn't wait to read the poems to his Westies.

Good Dog.......2005-05-09
Absolutely as charming and original in text--which is perfectly matched in illustration-- as any children's book I have seen in too long. Gottfried's text soars in imaginative flight to capture canine essences, and should elicit the same enthusiasm from any child and adult. I was truly impressed.
Great for dog lovers.......2005-05-07
A nice combination of fine art and prose poetry for the younger reader and especially for dog lovers! The paintings are simple and the dogs are very expressive. The accompanying poetry interprets the mood and attitude of these canines with humor and will inspire young readers to create thier own personalites for these pups.
Wonderful!.......2005-02-01
This book is written for a 4-8 year old age level, but I loved it so much that I bought one for myself- I put it out on my coffee table! The poems are very smart and fun, and they are individualized to perfectly fit the extraordinary drawings of various dog breeds. I love it!

Book Description
Bobo really wants to be a good dog. It’s just that being good takes so much effort. When his owner finally has enough and sends him packing, it’s silent Cat who misses him the most. Armed with a how-to book and quiet determination, Cat begins to instruct Bobo in proper dog etiquette. Shake, fetch, and roll over all go well. But can Cat really turn this incorrigible canine around?

How To Be A Good Story Book.......2007-01-12
My four-year-old grandaughter, already a great dog lover, loves this book with its wonderful humor and whimsy. Since it's fun for a grown-up too, it's just about perfect.

Who Let the Dogs In?
Review by PATRICIA T. O'CONNER
As we all know, bad boys are more charming than good ones. Naughtiness, like it or not (and we do), is alluring. Maybe that's why it's easier to forgive a bad boy's captivating faults than a good boy's perfections - assuming, of course, that the bad boy doesn't bite.
Bobo, the great galumphing hound in Gail Page's "How to Be a Good Dog," is the canine Oscar Madison. He reads with his feet on the coffee table. He rummages in the refrigerator between meals, then eats messy snacks on the living-room furniture. He leaves muddy paw prints everywhere. He chews up homework, though it's not clear whose, since his owner, Mrs. Birdhead, is the only human on the premises. Never mind. This dog finds homework to chew up.
When Mrs. Birdhead finally exiles Bobo to the doghouse, he's missed by an unlikely ally - lonely, good-hearted Cat, who plots to restore Bobo to their owner's good graces. Armed with a book on dog obedience, Cat teaches Bobo a few civilizing tricks (lying down comes naturally). The road to perfection is bumpy, and Bobo never quite arrives. But because he tries, he gets a "good dog" from his owner, and that's what counts in the end.
Works on many levels.......2006-04-25
My 2-year old daughter enjoys this book as much as the adults that read it to her, but on a very different level. She loves the idea that Bobo WANTS to be a good dog, but doesn't always succeed, and that his friends help him. She also loves the big KAPOW when he runs into Mrs. Birdhead. (Oh, and she enjoys trying to imitate Bobo sitting, particularly lotus position.) She has no idea why the adults think it's funny that Bobo's idea of "sit" involves a chair and sometimes the lotus position. She sees it as a finely nuanced psychological book about ethics (why is it OK for Cat to push Bobo when he's running down the stairs?) with good sound effects and a dog, which is everything she ever wanted out of a book.
Bobo's a hit.......2006-03-22
Our grandchildren,(Charlotte, 7, Lucy, 4, amd Peter, 2 1/2), giggled their way through this charming book. Gail Page's endearing illustrations depict Bobo as the favorite dog of everyone's childhood. And Cat, more helpful than most cats we've known personally, is a star as well. This is one of those special books that makes readers young and old smile in recognition. Our son, Alex, age 32, brought this book to our attention and we all loved it.
ADORABLE!.......2006-03-19
This book is a delight! I enjoy it as much as my daughter. The illustrations are hilarious - very colorful and entertaining. I highly recommend this book to anyone with young children and a sense of humor.
