Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This was good if you want to have a basic understanding of what your cat's body movements mean and how they translate to how they are feeling. I recommend to read it with your children as there are many good pictures and it will better help them understand when to pet the cat and when to let it alone!

I bought this after reading other reviews, but I was extremely disapponted in this book. The title is very misleading. I've had cats for years and wanted to learn more about their behavior and the differnt types of meows. This book does NOT do this. It's very basic and they write about behavior most children could figure out after being around their cat for a while. It mostly addresses cats behavior with other cats which an idiot can figure out without having to read about it. Not worth the money.

Not a Bad Little Book!.......2005-12-12

The author seems to know her stuff.

The book has an excellent lay out. Lots of pictures, easy to navigate, wonderful index, sort of like a FAQ on cat behavior.

Everyone from the novice to experienced cat owner is likely to learn something about the subject.

The subject itself is a little bland. Before you cat lovers all get upset about this remark, let me explain. According to Bailey the majority of cat behavior is rather simple, basic needs for safety, exploration, food, etc. Cat behavior is also rather simple: tail up or down, rub off scent, etc. This makes portions of the book repetitious. This is not a complaint. It is better to be truthful and a little bland than to invent a bunch of human response and lay those on the cat.

All in all it's a good book and worth owning. Cat owners won't be disappointed.

This book was wonderful - I have had cats all of my life and have read many books and articles regarding them - but this one did answer a lot of questions.

Sociologist Dr Leslie Irvine's If You Tame Me is a very important and inspiring book. It will be of great interest to all who love animals and are concerned about their welfare. If you sense a kinship with nonhuman animals and the natural world, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It is very well-written and well researched. It takes many of the assumptions that we commonly make about the animal "other" and skilfully dismantles them to reveal pernicious social constructs that should stimulate us all to be more cognizant of how we treat other species. I couldn't put it down!

I liked the beginning with the chemistry and physiology of the cat's mind. And that's about it. I don't even think I finished this book - it started getting into cats in their natural habitat rather than how it relates housecats. I tried reading it twice but stopped in the same spot - too bad they don't sell just the first few chapters!

Useful introduction to genetics, and behaviour of cats.......2005-06-19

I have read half this book in a single day, it was hard to put it down. While I was aware of many of the items in this book from reading other books about cats, the author provides a lot of information, and especially comparisons between dogs and cats, and other domesticated animals, all of which is very interesting.

The author has a very good introduction to genetics. He also mentions research about how breeding for color has a side effect of changing the personality of the cats. He repeatedly gives examples of how the adaption of cats to living in proximity to humans is caused by a genetic changes that lead to changes in behaviour, and ultimately in how the mind of the cat works. He also touchs on concerns about how heavy inbreeding to select for various odd traits that we find pleasing may be creating animals that are actually mentally less suited to being pets and surviving on their own.

Another great book that goes over a lot of the same issues, but is more current, and discusses a lot of these same things as their concern farm animals, and other pets is "Thinking In Pictures - and Other Reports from My Life with Autism" by Temple Grandin. I highly recommend this book also.

I wouldn't write home about it........2004-03-12

I've been a cat owner my entire life. I didn't find any revelations about cats in this book. All the information seemed like common sense for people who are cat lovers. Perhaps this book would be a good read for someone who is a new cat owner and is very interested in details. If you are trying to find a solution for your cat's behavior problem, this book is probably not a good choice- it is written in a descriptive/narrative style, not in a do-it-yourself-help style.

The End Does Not Justify The Means.......2001-04-07

Never before have I felt so compelled to write a review on a book, but Dr. Bruce Fogle's "The Cat's Mind" bothered me so much that I wish someone had warned me before I made the mistake of buying it.

Prior to even reading a word I was struck by the fact that there is an entire chapter dedicated to disciplining your cat. While Dr. Fogle does make mention of one form of discipline being positive reinforcement, he then goes on to disturbingly describe how negative reinforcement can be used to effectively retrain cats to behave "as you would like them to". The next two sub-chapters are titled "aversion" and "intimidation", the latter of which describes techniques to hit your animal, including the use of rolled up newspaper, or as the author proudly claims to be his method of choice, using the "nearest fly swatter".

If this isn't bad enough the rest of the book (or actually the first half of this book as I couldn't even finish reading it) is riddled with ridiculous and barbaric experiment citations involving cats which, he states, are "unpleasant, at times thoughtless and at other times cruel, but it would be foolish to disregard the results". I don't want to hear how inserting electrodes into a calm cat's brainstem can turn it into a "ferocious demon", what effect keeping newborn kittens in total darkness has, or what happens when a cat's whiskers are removed. He even goes on to cite an "experiment" you can conduct yourself to test your cat's balance ("hold your cat by its front and back legs upside-down a yard above your bed and let go").

To say I was disgusted with this book is an understatement. First off, there are so many alternative ways to "discipline" your cat to where you are not physically hurting it (my favorite are the cans of compressed air most computer stores sell to clean your computer keyboards with. They emit a loud "hiss" noise when engaged, which startle the cat. To me this beats even the water gun because no contact is made with your cat). Even with his method of punishment aside, in respect to Dr. Fogle's need to cite animal experiments, I do not feel the end justify the means. Just because an experiment was conducted does NOT give it merit or mean the results should be reviewed. Should the horrific experiments the nazi's conducted be viewed as viable research simply because they were conducted? Absolutely not.

I found this book to be very distracting and even if Dr. Fogle gave informative insight I wouldn't know because I couldn't even finish it. If you are a true animal lover, in my opinion, you can go elsewhere to find more feline-friendly information, and not waste your time on this book.

A handbook for understanding the cat's mind.......2000-05-06

This book improved my understanding of my cat's needs and behaviors; it also heightened my appreciation for these sometimes quirky behaviors. The author blends the history of cat domestication and scientific research with humorous anecdotal illustrations to help the reader understand the why cats behave like cats.

This new edition is much more user friendly! It's filled with great information on Persians, like what specific combs and brushes to use. How to give a bottom bath. The lion cut. Not much on genetics, other than genetic disorders, since you can get that anywhere.. And the description of a show hall is right on! And things anyone can use like introducing a new kitten, breaking bad litter pan habits.

Very disappointing book.......2003-08-22

Having recently purchased a Persian I thought this book would be a great place to start - how wrong I was! Only 2 pages dedicated to their behaviour and understanding them so not much use at all to me really. Also it is important to note that (apparently) European Persians have a tendency to have very different personalities to US ones, also in the US Persians are less likely to be 'extreme' (i.e. flat faced).

No information at all on special the dietry requirements of a Persian(in the UK, premium foods such as Hills, Jameswellbeloved etc are recommended by the experts, but no mention of this in book).

Lots of breeder information which is great if you want to breed but it only relates to the USA. Probably a book worth 2 out of 5 in you live in the states, but for UK or European readers i'd give this book a miss.

I bought the book looking for specific information about Persians. What I got was a little information about Persians and a lot of information about cats in general. I guess if I were interested in breeding or showing, this might be the book to buy, but for a simple cat fancier, it doesn't do it for me.

Comprehensive overview of feline behavior from UK biologist.......2004-06-28

U.K. biologist Roger Tabor's book is a cleverly illustrated and fairly comprehensive overview of feline behavior. Beautiful full-color photos are used very effectively throughout the text. However, his biologist's focus favors cats in their natural state. He sees the increasing trend towards confining cats in the U.S. and U.K. as a major contributor to behavior problems (p.120). While this may be true, many U.S. bird-lovers might dispute the British study he refers to that found outdoor cats were not threatening bird populations (p.135).

This book is not a primary cat care manual, or a collection of detailed case studies, but it is an excellent supplemental text for any cat owner who wants (and needs!) to understand their pet better. Though much of it is not of any immediate use to owners of neutered/spayed indoor cats, the entire text is full of fascinating detail and illustration of all aspects of feline behavior throughout the life-cycle. Tabor starts from biological descriptions of the feline class and works towards the behavorial specifics. The problem-solving section is only the last 20 pp. of the book, but it seems thorough enough to cover most common situations.

I gave this book the full 5 stars because it's very well done for what it offers. However, if you're primarily interested in spayed/neutered indoor cat behavioral issues, there are better books to advise you.

Disappointing.......2006-10-12

I was disappointed with this book because I expected more substance on how to cure cat behavioral problems. Most of what was presented in the book was common sense. The book also doesn't offer any in-depth case histories and therapy plans for cats with particular problems.

I feel this book would be useful for someone who knows little about cats. However, if you are familar with cats and their basic needs, this book doesn't offer much more insight than most people would know. I expected more from a well-known behaviorist.

If you are really looking for an in-depth book on pet behavior that is more useful, read Pam Johnson-Bennett's "Psycho Kitty" book. I found it to be absolutely excellent.

A common sense book.......2006-09-21

Because this is basically a common sense book I didn't find it helpful in dealing with my new kitten who is extremely loving and very curious. Her curiosity leads her to places where she should not go;n the author of this book tells me to put things away I don't want the cat to get into. To me this is not exactly the advice of an expert. I expected to learn how to teach a cat. The book does do what the title states; it does not do what I wanted. My mistake.

My two dogs and I were bemused when a stray cat started following us around on our walks, eventually darting right ahead of us as we returned home, to be the first one in the door. Fortunately a friend gave me a copy of "The Total Cat" by Carole Wilbourn. My basic questions about feeding, litter box, and vet vists were answered briskly and sensibly. Then it got complicated when a second cat decided to move in. Carole's book walked me so carefully through the psychology of bringing the new cat into our family that it was painless. I turn to this book whenever a new catly situation arises and it hasn't let me down. Carole Wilbourn is either part feline herself, or has been a cat in a past life! Great book.

Helpful and Interesting.......2004-06-05

Ms. Wilbourn knows and loves cats. So do I - I've been a besotted cat person for over three decades. I was interested, therefore, to find that she had some things to teach me. She starts at the beginning with what you should decide before getting a cat. She then takes you through the course of the life you and your cat(s) share. She covers all the basics as well as problems which may seem unlikely but for which you'll be glad to have Ms. Wilbourn's advice. THE TOTAL CAT is clear, affectionate, and diverting without that nasty failing of so many "cat books" - cutesiness. I currently have three cats, all of whom dislike each other but, with Ms. Wilbourn's help, we are steadily working things out.

Best animal behavior book I've ever read.......2004-06-02

This book has been an excellent reference manual for me. I refer to it when I have basic animal care questions as well as major animal behavioral concerns.

Carole's guidance was very helpful when I brought a new kitten into my home. Tending to the older cat and letting him bond with the kitten is very valuable information and leads to a more adjusted animal pairing.

I have a very anxious cat who was resistant to any treatment from a few vets or previous animal behaviorist. She suggested that I sequester him so that he can feel safe and protected. I was hesitant to do this as it felt cruel. After trying it, it was obvious that he really needed this type of intensive care. Her suggestions have helped him to feel more secure in his environment.

I am so confident about her intuitive feline gift that I have also hired her as my cat's behaviorist.

This is a beautifully illustrated, intelligent, straightforward book that contains just about everything you ever wanted to know about cats. It avoids the cuteness of many cat books, dealing instead with serious issues of conservation of wild cats and expressing the author's special fondness for mixed breed cats (or, as he calls them, "Moggies"), because, he maintains, they are the purest breed of cat and closest in genetics and behavior to wild cats. (Mercifully, Roger Tabor avoids the annoying affectation of using the pronoun "she" in referrence to all cats.) The historical information on how cats become our domestic pets is particularly fascinating, and the health advice and care instructions for cats are right on target and quite useful.

Understanding Your Cat sets an expectation for deeper insights into feline behavior. In fact, what little commentary there is on cat behavior is superficial and obvious to the long-time-cat-owner. Dr Fox spends too much time analyzing feline evolution and contrasting feline, canine, and primate behavior and not enough time on cats themselves. Finally, the black and white photographs which comprise the core of the behavior section did not reproduce well and are dificult to see. I could only recommend this book to non-cat-owners.

If you have a cat, especially a siamese or purebred one, you need this book. Some people own a cat for years and still don't know the first thing about them or how to properly take care of them. This book gives you a luminous insight into their super-selfish but predictable behavior, such as why they seem to turn around and try to get back in a door when you let them out. The many photos are great too, as is the history of where our domestic cats come from. All in all, "America's best known animal psychologist" is not an understatement. Dr. Michael Fox rocks!

I think this has to be one of the most comprehensive guides to caring for one's cat I have ever seen: it covers nutrition, aging, correcting unwanted behaviors, medical needs, and communication with your cat, among many other subjects. As a person who has lived with cats most of my life, there were eye-opening bits of information I never knew before. Overall, it is a well thought out, comprehensive book. My one teeny-tiny gripe is not about the content of the book or the information, but rather the fact that like a lot of other cat books and literature, it refers to a cat as "she" almost exclusively. As a person who has lived with male cats and female cats and is an animal lover in general, I wonder: can't we just use the word "it"? Very good book anyway ...

I found great information for my cat's diet and health, plus first aid & psychology. I gave this book as gifts to several of my friends, and they like it a lot, too. The "Vitality Mix" recipe has helped my cat immensely.
