Great Training Advice.......2007-09-06
I found the book to be an easy-to-read brochure that gets right to the point with clear, concise suggestions for training your dog.
Excellent!!.......2007-08-31
Don't let the size of this book turn you away - this book has all the information you need to greatly improve your relationship with your dog. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has a difficult dog, but people with obedient dogs can benefit as well.
This book was well written, short and to the point. I followed her advice and now my dogs listen to me and I no longer yell or pull on the leash!
How to be the Leader of the Pack..........2007-08-31
Very good condition and prompt delivery. I would definitely purchase from this seller again! Thank you very much
A must have for anyone with a dog.......2007-07-09
This book saved my relationship with my two "kids" - it is written in language that is very easy to understand and presents principles in a way that anyone can appreciate and practice. I believe that reading this book taught me how to live with and relate to my four legged family in a way that truly allows us to live together in a harmony that we had not known previously and cherish every day since. Highly recommended for anyone who has a canine companion, whether it is a new relationship or one that has gone on for a while but has become a strain for any member of the family.
Get Double Pleasure from this book!.......2007-06-13
I enjoyed this practical little booklet, but it is twice as useful and entertaining if you read it aloud and substitute the word "man" [or a man's name] for the word "dog" [or a dog's name]. I gave it to my sister when she adopted one of my foster dogs, and we had a jolly and educational time reading it "both ways". Anything by Patricia McConnell is a "must-read" for those of us who love interaction with our dogs!
Book Description
Yes, humans and canines are different species, but current research provides fascinating, irrefutable evidence that what we share with our dogs is greater than how we vary. As behaviorist and zoologist Dr. Patricia McConnell tells us in this remarkable new book about emotions in dogs and in people, more and more scientists accept the premise that dogs have rich emotional lives, exhibiting a wide range of feelings including fear, anger, surprise, sadness, and love.
In For the Love of a Dog, McConnell suggests that one of the reasons we love dogs so much is that they express emotions in ways similar to humans. After all, who can communicate joy better than a puppy? But not all emotional expressions are obvious, and McConnell teaches both beginning dog owners and experienced dog lovers how to read the more subtle expressions hidden behind fuzzy faces and floppy ears.
For those of us who deeply cherish our dogs but are sometimes baffled by their behavior, For the Love of a Dog will come as a revelation–a treasure trove of useful facts, informed speculation, and intriguing accounts of man’s best friend at his worst and at his very best. Readers will discover how fear, anger, and happiness underlie the lives of both people and dogs and, most important, how understanding emotion in both species can improve the relationship between them. Thus McConnell introduces us to the possibility of a richer, more rewarding relationship with our dogs.
While we may never be absolutely certain what our dogs are feeling, with the help of this riveting book we can understand more than we ever thought possible. Those who consider their dogs part of the family will find For the Love of a Dog engaging, enlightening, and utterly engrossing.

sounds good to me.......2007-10-10
Not all the way thru yet but the book shares much of my own philosophy. Worth reading.
Excellent tool.......2007-09-30
This is one of the best tools I've found for helping me understand the world my dog lives in. As a sidebar - there is a series of photos including both humans and canines, showing expressions and pointing out what they mean. Having looked through it thoroughly, I was in hysterics after logging in to a blog and seeing a group of "happy party photos" - once I'd looked at her photos, the *real* message of the party shots was unavoidable, from the smile that said "take one more photo and I'll drown you in the gazpacho" to the frozen, fear-filled shy person, barring her teeth in one of the most uncomfortable smiles I've ever seen. So this is not only good for understanding your dog - but also for paying attention to the real messages on the people faces around you!
Terrific book - even if you don't have a dog!.......2007-09-29
This is a great book! I first purchased it as an audiobook, then purchased the hardcover. Now, I am listening to the audiobook for the second time, and am amazed all over again. If you are interested in the way your brain works, the way dogs learn, the way animals in general learn, this book is fascinating. It is not a how-to book, so you won't be able to train your dog after reading this book. But it will help you understand your dog (and yourself!)
Very analytical.......2007-09-27
I was expecting this audio to be something like a cross between dog psychology and "Marley and Me." It was exclusively the psychology of dog behavior, and is not easy listening.
Excellent book.......2007-09-26
This book gave me a very clear, interesting glimpse into the mind of dogs and enabled me to interpret their body language.

wonderful book.......2007-08-29
This is an underead book from a great trainer that is honest! I am a trainer and I use a lot of these techninues to get the spoiled dogs of the world to start listening. You can still buy this from dog wise for a reasonable price. The woman who blew it off does not have the creditals to review this book.
Save Your Money.....!.......2006-05-18
This book is not about relationship building. The suggestions in this book are extreme. Crating a dog 24 hrs a day...why have a dog? There are plenty of other books out there that will actually teach you how to have a better relationship with your dog. This is NOT one of them. I wish I had read the reviews before I spent money on this book.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.......2006-05-12
Don't waste your money on this book. What a joke, this book isn't a relationship building program. It is more like a prison sentence for a dog. Just lock your dog up in a crate 24/7 except to allow your dog to eat and relieve him/herself (while on a leash, of course). There you have this book's "relationship buliding program" - SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!! In good conscience I wouldn't even give this book away!
Ruff Love equals Tough Love for rough dogs.......2005-09-16
Yes, this is a tough love book but if a dog may loose it's home or even it's life for want of proper manners do what is necessary to prevent it from happening. Use what is approprite to the situation and get professional help if needed.
A serious book for seriously confused dogs.......2005-06-15
No, you should not buy "Ruff Love" as a day-to-day training guide. The program in this book places serious restrictions on your dog that most dogs don't need, and most people will not have the heart or conviction to implement. The technique strips your dog of every privilege and makes him completely dependent on you (at the risk of ruining any indepence and confidence he may have...).
Why would anyone use such a program? Because every once in a while, a dog grows up with the notion (usually encouraged or at least allowed by the human) that HE is in charge of the house. Retraining this dog from the ground up may wind up saving his quality of life (such dogs often end up on a chain, locked away, or given up to a shelter) or, should he become aggressive, his life.
The author also suggests that the program be used for canine athletes to build bonding. Here I'm not in agreement; it's a pretty severe way to build co-dependence.
[NOTE: This book does not contain harsh, force-driven techniques.]

great starter book.......2007-06-20
this is a good book when you first get your puppy and i really like her techniques but i was looking for more tricks.
One of the best dog training books ever written.......2007-04-19
No matter what breed or age your dog is, this book can help you train your furry friend. A must have for dog owners and professional trainers alike.
A great resource.......2007-03-22
We recently adopted an adult dog who is incredibly timid. We know "normal" training with any negative re-enforcement would be a disaster for her. This book was fantastic. All the steps are positive and she has responded very well to it. I do think it takes a little longer to train with only positive re-enforcement, but the emotional benefits are fantastic. This book is not a substitute for taking your dog to a training class, but it is a fantastic resource to use at home. I particularly appreciated the sections on how dogs learn and interpret things. In particular, I found very valuable the advice that every moment you're with your dog is a training situation. If you are not actively training your dog, then your dog is actively training you. :)
A Value.......2007-01-30
I'm not a professional dog trainer, just the owner of a Golden Retriever pup that is finally learning how to behave. This book is full of practical ideas that answered many of my questions and presented all kinds of tips for getting through to my pet. It's amazing how a little training can make life less stressful.
Pat rocks!.......2005-07-21
This is one of two books that I include with my dog training classes in Seattle. I like it because the chapters are in bite-size, informative, entertaining pieces. Pat Miller is one of the premier trainers in the country, and she's brought us a gem with this book!

"Why is it that some people form lasting and warm relationships with their dogs, while others get no joy at all from their pets?" Dr. Stanley Coren, author of The Intelligence of Dogs, asks this question in Why We Love the Dogs We Do: How to Find the Dog That Matches Your Personality. Coren sets out not only to answer this question--an extremely worthy one considering that 4 out of 10 dogs fail to last the first year with their adoptive owners--but to revolutionize the way people think about prospective pets.
Relying on his background in psychology and dog intelligence--as well as the input of several animal experts--Coren created seven new groups of dogs based on canine characteristics that "had the most influence on people's satisfaction and lifestyle": friendly, protective, independent, self-assured, consistent, steady, and clever. Coren then asks that you calculate your personality using a pared-down version of the Interpersonal Adjective Scales--a personality test that measures in terms of extroverted/introverted, trusting/controlling, dominant/no-so-dominant, and warm/cool. The findings of this test, when coupled with Coren's new canine classification system, pinpoint the dog/dogs perfect for your personality.
Sprinkled throughout Coren's fascinating scientific discussion are a multitude of entertaining tales--which serve to further illustrate Coren's findings--including Sigmund Freud and his well-suited chow chow, Jo-Fi, who attended Freud's therapy sessions; playwright Eugene O'Neill and his beloved dalmatian, Blemie, for whom O'Neill bought a four-poster bed; and novelist John Steinbeck's poodle, Charlie, who accompanied the Nobel Prize-winning novelist on his travels across the United States. Both informative and highly entertaining, Why We Love the Dogs We Do paves the way for a mutually beneficial owner/dog relationship.
Book Description
A Dog's Best Friend
In Why We Love the Dogs We Do, Stanley Coren provides a foolproof guide to understanding which dog will make the best lifetime companion. He brings together his expertise in the fields of human psychology and animal behavior to provide a completely new approach to the dog/human relationship.
Working with a team of animal experts, Coren has identified seven groups of dogs based on characteristics such as friendliness, protectiveness, independence, and steadiness. Each group contains dogs from different breeds that share similar personality traits -- a unique departure from the familiar American Kennel Club breed groups. Perhaps even more fascinating are the results of Dr. Coren's extensive work matching human personality types with canine characteristics. Using his personality tests, anyone can determine which dog is the right match and which dog is almost certain to cause heartbreak.
Rich in anecdotes and grounded in scientific study, Why We Love the Dogs We Do offers us the tools we need to find happiness in what can be among the most satisfying relationships of a lifetime.

Useful and Amusing.......2006-07-18
I found this book to be a lighthearted yet informative read amongst the many different books I perused when trying to decide what breed of dog to share my life with. As a previous dog owner and trainer, I found his "groupings" interesting and pretty accurate, dog-personality-wise, and while the human personality test is perhaps a bit simplified, it nonetheless gets you to a useful conclusion about yourself that you can use to choose your breed. My husband and I were surprised at the breed category we ended up best fit for, and after having the dog we chose from that group for a year, we have found that the author's recommendations were pretty accurate for our likes and dislikes.
I will say, however, that this should not be the only source you read to choose what breed you want to adopt. Do read a more "scientific" book that goes further in-depth on what to expect from specific breeds, and probably also read a book written specifically on your final choice BEFORE adopting. Lastly, keep in mind that dogs are still animals, not humans, and to some extent have their own personalities regardless of what breed they belong to. As long as you have a sense of humor, living with a dog (whatever you choose) will be an enjoyable adventure.
Match Maker .... Match Maker.......2006-04-10
There are one million dogs in the US who have been named as beneficiaries in their owners wills. What does this observation suggest? Since Americans don't typically bequeath their hard earned fortunes to any but family members, perhaps it means that often we REALLY treat our dogs as family. Since they obviously weren't born to us, perhaps it resembles a good marriage.
Contrast this love-filled fact with the less sanguine observation that nearly half of all puppy adoptions never make it through their first year. What makes the difference?
Coren's contention is that when the puppy's personality is compatible with that of their human "parents" the relationship works; when incompatible, the odds of early divorce is much higher.
So how can we improve the odds? Coren's answer is the same one that has made dating services successful. Both of you take a personality test and will do the matching for you. Many believe dating services work, I have no opinion, but Coren's approach assumes that it will work when applied to owners and dogs. So, how does it work?
It's as elegant as it is simple. Coren has already done all the hard work. He's conducted a large scale study of dog personalities organized by AKC breed types with an eye toward matching them with the results of commonly-used human personality tests. Then to complete the job he provides a brief and simple personality test that you can take and score in about fifteen minutes.
So, with your personality type in your left hand and the dog type listing in your right hand, lay one over the other, so to speak, identify the groupings that are most compatible with your personality profile, and start calling vets and breeders. Okay, there's a little more to the matching process than this, but really, not much more.
If this was all there was to the book, I'd have been glad to read it. I've had a long term interest in dog testing in general and dog personality testing in particular. But there's much more. To help convince us that the approach works, I lost count at some point but there are literally dozens and dozens of vignettes about the famous and not-so famous people and their dogs. In each case we are treated to an often thoroughly researched personality analysis which he then compares to the dog personality type and ties it all together with an assessment of whether the match was made in heaven or somewhere else.
Actors, actresses, historical figures, presidents - lots of presidents - poets, authors, and on and on. Not to the point of boredom, mind you. Never that. In fact, while reading the final vignette, I seriously hoped for an epilog with at least one more of these little stories. I got hooked.
"Why We Love the Dogs We Do" is a good read, a very good read. It's worth a read... read it.
EPILOG
Both my wife and I took the personality test and were surprised to learn that Newfies, which we have long had and loved were not on our recommended list. The matchmaking test was spot on for typifying the personality of our breed but, we believe, missed the target on capturing who are. Sadly this fact lost a star on the rating.
Great Book.......2006-03-14
Bought this book several years ago and thought it was great. Considering the dogs I have had in the past, it was dead on in why I thought they were great or why I couldn't wait to get rid of them as fast as possible. Unless it's a rescue dog as I have now, which is a terrior mix, I will definitely go back to this book time and time again as a reminider for the breed that is appropriate for me.
biased instead of insightful, many inaccuracies.......2006-02-17
The classification of dog "types" didn't resemble anything I've learned in other books on dog breeds. I'm not aware that dogs are either clever or friendly, but not both at the same time.
How would one choose a pet? Let's see, do I want a stupid friendly dog, or a dog who is very clever but aloof and indifferent to me?
A big disappointment was the section where the author shared his intense dislike of cats and their owners. What does this have to do with the title and theme of his book and why should any of us care?
Dr Coren, for unknown reasons, finds it necessary to express his admiration and love of dogs by bashing cats with the same old tiresome comparisons that are always unfavorable to cats.
If this was necessary, then why not include a chapter listing all the ways that guinea pigs, gerbils, parakeets, and tropical fish fall short when compared with dogs?
Better yet, let's have an expert on rabbit breeding write a book about taking care of rabbits, and then include a chapter describing the faults and inadequacies of dogs?
After reading much of this book,I find it hard to believe that Coren really likes any animals. I wonder whether he needed additional ncome and thought he had a new angle for a dog book.
As a lover of both dogs and cats, I have no trouble realizing that they are two different species that require no comparisons.
The author's decision to share the story of the woman who seemed indifferent when her cat went missing is supposed to prove that even people who choose cats for pets, don't really love them the way the author loves dogs. Is Coren really unaware that there's a surplus of uncaring PET owners who neglect dogs as well as cats?
I don't know what Coren's grudge against the cat owning woman in his book is all about, but it tells us nothing about what cats are like as pets!
Coren thinks cats are seldom seen during the day. He would enjoy meeting my cat, who along with our dog, greets people at the door, follows us from room to room and cuddles with us on the couch at all times of the day or evening.
Mr Coren, let the real dog and cat experts write the books.Your time would be better spent developing some insight into your own anger and resentments.
darn i couldint give this book zero stars!.......2005-06-22
this book is awful and gives incorect info on dogs.i am a great perenees and mastiff fan . this book descibed these dogs as "pefectly happy if required to live outside" and "these dogs will tolerate more roughhousing than other breeds and will even put up rough phisical handeling that apears to come to the piont of abuse".but that is pefectly untrue because behaior problems in the mastiff and great perenees are usauly because of being isolated from the family. and great perenees must be traind with a GENTLE hand or you will see this dog fall apart before your very eyes. this book consisted mainly of storys about famouse people and there dogs. please read about the breed before listening to this book.

Greeeaaat Book.......2002-12-27
I have 2 adult stubborn Bichons that I adopted as adults. They were never obedience trained as pups. This book addresses all of the issues I have with them. I'm currently in the process of following Joy's instructions and I'm amazed at the results. They are a work in progress but I see light at the end of the tunnel.
**Citywulf - Dogs don't think like humans. Joy only recommended grabbing the muzzle or scruff on the neck as last options. She also recommends increasing the confidence of timid dogs. She has advocated posturing and looks - hence the ALPHA***
Proceed with Caution.......2002-08-26
I have mixed feelings about this book. She debunks many old ideas, and that's good. But using "Alpha" techniques on a dog has its risks. We do not want to raise wolves, we want to raise household companions. "Alpha" training includes using the hands to deliver such reprimands as scruff-shakes and muzzle holding. This can lead to a hand-shy dog more apt to use wolf-life reprimands on other dogs or even children considered subordinate. For timid and small dogs especially, I would recommend hands-free methods that rely on vocal tones, eye contact, and rewards.
Great Info and Fun to Read!!!.......2002-05-20
I stayed up all night reading this book, not only because the info was so good but it is extremely humorous and entertaining. I recommend this book to anyone who cares about their dog.
If You Have a Dog, You Need This Book.......2002-04-05
Thank you Joy! I have been recommending this book to everyone I know who has a dog or is just thinking about it. If I had gotten it first I wouldn't have wasted money on any other dog books. Joy explains why dogs act the way they do and how their behavoir can be changed. I have seen many people mistreating their dogs in an attempt to disipline them. Or using strange, ineffective training techniques or no training at all. Simply the best there is...as the owner of a young Border Collie I don't know how we survived until we got this book.
I Love My Dog,BUT..... It's my dog to a T.......2001-10-05
I bought this book as a last resort on how to deal with my GSD/Malamute. She was a horrible mannered thing..lol. Now she is better behaved and minds. Three HUGE cheers to Joy Tiz for her awesome book and understanding of what makes a dog tick!!!! I also keep on on her websites for more info as I go along..going to write another book Joy?
