Book Description

Used by hundreds of thousands of students since its first edition, INTRODUCTION TO PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS continues to blend the best of its proven coverage with new innovations. While retaining the straightforward presentation and traditional outline for descriptive and inferential statistics, the Twelfth Edition incorporates exciting new learning aids like MyPersonal Trainer, MyApplet, and MyTip to ensure that students learn and understand the relevance of the material. The book takes advantage of modern technology, including computational software and interactive visual tools, to facilitate statistical reasoning as well as the understanding and interpretation of statistical results. In addition to showing how to apply statistical procedures, the authors explain how to meaningfully describe real sets of data, what the statistical tests mean in terms of their practical applications, how to evaluate the validity of the assumptions behind statistical tests, and what to do when statistical assumptions have been violated. This new edition retains the statistical integrity, examples, exercises and exposition that have made it a market leader, and builds upon this tradition of excellence with new technology integration.

1 out of 5 stars Unfortunately Book Required By Professor!.......2007-09-09

I purchased textbook because it was required by my Biostatistics professor in my graduate program. Personally, I do not like the book. It makes problems more complicated than they need to be. I feel a good textbook is one in which you can read on your own and basically understand it without a whole lot of instruction and review by your professor. It would be very difficult to just read this textbook and then take an exam. I have only had the book for several weeks and I think it makes Biostats more complicated. I did purchase the supplement that goes with it, which is good for practice and the CD allows you to take self-test. If you are not savvy in stats, purchasing the supplemental practice book may be the thing for you to do if your professor requires use of the textbook.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly written freshman level probability and statistics book.......2007-07-19

First, I cant believe that people actually used this book in a graduate class. I taught out of this book to freshmen.

A lot of the notation in this book is horrible and I feel this makes it harder for people new to the subject to read. Also there are very few exercises for the students to practice. In addition, too many of the answers in the back of the book are incorrect (this really confuses students).

I will not be teaching out of this book again.

1 out of 5 stars Very poorly written........2004-03-15

I had to buy this book for an introductory graduate stats class. This book assumes you have some knowledge of stats and so provides very brief explanations for most concepts. This is a big problem for students with little or no stats background.

Another problem is that there are too few examples. Considering their meager explanations, one would hope they would at least provide enough examples to help students understand the concepts. But they usually provide only one or two problems, which are woefully inadequate.

Also, the CD is totally useless. Most of the practice is multiple choice, which I think is pretty silly for a stats class. In addition, there is no explanation for how they got to the answer, so if you can't figure it out and choose the wrong answer, you're out of luck for any explanation.

I stopped using this book for my course and instead began using Elementary Statistics, A Step by Step Approach by Bluman. This book is excellent; it explains everything from step 1. There are also many, many examples and lots of pictures to help you further understand stats. Also, they explain very clearly when you should use the different formulas, which I found extremely helpful in bringing all the concepts together.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-01-16

The text we used for our undergrad Stats class covered the exact same material as this text, which we used for a graduate level class and which cost about 60 bucks more, but the undergrad text was written more clearly, concisely and logically. We even found a mistake in one of the tables in the back of this book.

2 out of 5 stars An "easy" introduction but lacks content.......2003-09-18

Author: Computer Science/Mathematics Undergraduate at Cameron University

This book was required for an introductory non-calculus based statistics course at my school and it turned out to be a mixed bag. The theories are explained well in most cases but the book doesn't have enough examples for all of the theorems. Many times only one case is explained in dynamic situations leaving this reader more than a little lost. Usually the theorems are explained well enough that this is not a big deal, but not so in every case. So there tends to be those points where the student may get a little stuck without assistance from their professor.

Another problem I found was that the book was a little bit dumbed down in many areas. This book uses no calculus, so the theories are presented often without the mathematical rigor required to properly formulate accurate results. The book still presents the theorems and formulas in a way where the student can get something out of this without calculus, but it becomes a problem later in the book in the sections on regression. For a non-calculus based class like the one I took, this is all unavoidable, so the book handled the situation well considering the constraints.

This book presents a very light introduction to statistics and is good prep for more advanced statistics courses, but as a stand-alone only the most basic material is presented since it is non-calculus based and the material is spread thin between combinatorics, probability, binomial distributions, normal distributions, t distributions, ANOVA tests, regression, non-parametric statistics, etc... To attain a significant amount of useful knowledge you really need to buy separate books tackling each of these subjects independantly, so this book is really unneccessary even for an introductory text but might serve well the student who needs to be eased into statistics lightly or just wants a brief overview of the subject.

    Book Description

Based on their popular book, A COURSE IN BUSINESS STATISTICS, this condensed text by William Mendenhall, Robert J. Beaver, and Barbara M. Beaver emphasizes the important concepts and methods of statistics that students are likely to see and use in their future courses and careers. Clear and easy to comprehend, this text achieves a balance of manual and computer methods, and emphasizes applications. The authors' approach is reflected in their objective: to make inferences about a population from information contained in a sample drawn from that population, and to assess the reliability of the inference. Students are shown how to solve problems even where uncertainty exists, because uncertain situations will confront them in business. Using this knowledge, students soon begin to understand the role of statistics in making informed business decisions and in shaping daily life, and to appreciate the implications of reported statistics.

    2 out of 5 stars Another hard-to-understand stats book.......2005-10-01

This book was found to be difficult to use by myself and other students in my MBA program. We are currently looking for an easier-to-understand book that is advanced enough for an MBA program. Our accompanying Schleifer/Bell book appears to be much easier to understand, although it doesn't cover all of the same topics.

However, I don't regret buying this book...I typically buy the textbooks for my classes, especially if I can get them for a reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars Very solid and practical guide........2006-11-07

The guide layout is very easy to follow and provides the reader with a clear and concise roadmap for beginning or maintaining HIPAA compliance.

    Very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Barry Fergus Jones, CISM CISSP.......2004-07-29

This is the best single reference that I've seen on the subject. Kevin and Rebecca have assembled a guide that is eminently practical, superbly organized, and tremendously helpful. I reach for it every time I have a question on HIPPA. In fact, it's the only HIPPA reference I've used since I got it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource everyone involved in HIPAA should have.......2004-06-02

Rebecca and Kevin have created an excellent resource for HIPAA Security Practictioners. They provide practical guidance for interpreting the HIPAA security rule, in terms that the non-security professional can understand. Especially of value are the ideas on how to "implement" the security rule, broken down by the relevant HIPAA security standard. I agree with the practical approach that they take within the book, as it is consistent with the HIPAA message that I have also been communicating over the past several years. There are also useful lists of items needed to maintain security compliance after implementation. This is a good book for the novice and experienced privacy/security professional. It is nice to see that someone has compiled this much useful information into one book. Nice job ! This is a must have book if you are a Security of Privacy Officer.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all Information Security Professionals!.......2004-05-20

As the title states, the book provides a very practical guide to HIPAA Privacy and Security. I used this book as a key reference to understanding the HIPAA privacy and security rule and in building a comprehensive roadmap (project plan) for compliance -- nicely done!

I strongly recommend the book to all Security Professionals that are working to build an environment based on standards of good practice -- including HIPAA compliance.

5 out of 5 stars An Achievable Security Rule Remediation Plan Road Map.......2004-04-05

For all the people out there looking for a comprehensive and thorough, plain-language explanation of the HIPAA security rule, who then complain about not having a clue about what next steps should be taken, the complaints should cease and the excuses should disappear after reading this book. "The Practical Guide to HIPAA Privacy and Security Compliance" not only "talks the talk" but the authors allow the reader to "walk the talk" as well, The appendices are invaluable resource. As a healthcare compliance consultant, I definitely will be recommending this book to my clients as well as apply some of the implemmentation suggestions with my clients during my own engagements.

When his father returns East to collect the rest of the family, 13-year-old Matt is left alone to guard his family's newly built homestead. One day, Matt is brutally stung when he robs a bee tree for honey. He returns to consciousness to discover that his many stings have been treated by an old Native American and his grandson. Matt offers his only book as thanks, but the old man instead asks Matt to teach his grandson Attean to read. Both boys are suspicious, but Attean comes each day for his lesson. In the mornings, Matt tries to entice Attean with tales from Robinson Crusoe, while in the afternoons, Attean teaches Matt about wilderness survival and Native American culture. The boys become friends in spite of themselves, and their inevitable parting is a moving tribute to the ability of shared experience to overcome prejudice. 5 out of 5 stars Beautiful story.......2007-09-14

This is a great book about a boy who forms a friendship with and Indian boy named Attean, and in fact with his entire family. I found it a pleasure to read, because it offered a different historical perspective than most books that come from the white man's perspective. While Matt was white, most of the book is filled with his interactions with the Indian people. We get a glimpse of how they lived, and how very practical it was as opposed to the white man's way of life. It was more in tune with the land, for sure.

I'm getting off track, but I was very touched by the story. Matt is essentially invited to join the Beaver tribe by Attean and his grandfather, and Attean calls him his brother. The warm acceptance that grew between the two boys was heartwarming, and toward the end it brought tears to my eyes, but not due to sadness; instead due to the love the two boys shared.

    5 out of 5 stars The choice.......2007-06-05

This book is about A boy named Matt who builds a cabin with his father and then his father leaves him alone to pick up the rest of his family. Now Matt is alone and puts marks by every day that passes. Then Matt meets an indian named attean and they become friends. Now Matt is teaching Attean to read and write and Attean is teaching Matt how to survive on his own. then time goes by and his dad never returned so Ateean is asking Matt to head north with the beaver tribe and Matt does not know if he should go with Attean or wait for his father.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantasict.......2007-05-30

You will think this book is fantastic because it's really interesting to see how the indians live. The beginning of the book starts out kinda of slow but it starts getting really good after the indians save Matt from the bees.My favorite part of the book is when the indians start to like matt because this is the part of the book when Matt starts to learn how to start hunting and becomes friends with Attan

5 out of 5 stars you will love this book .......2007-04-18

You will love this book because this book is an adventurous book. if you like books that envolve the olden days then you will love this book.you will want to read about what happens when the boy sees the hidden beaver signs and when the boy finds out that the indians saved his life.this book showws what could realy happen

5 out of 5 stars A great childhood book about history.......2007-02-10

This lovely book is a great book to show children tolerance between cultures. It is a study of how one boy sees the Native Americans in a positive light. Matt is able to experience friendship, loyalty, and acceptance. I was touched at how the grandfather showed love towards Matt. Also, Attean's final gift to Matt shows how much he thought of Matt-generosity and sacrifice. It is interesting for its historical perspective too, as the work of the Native American woman was shown in this book!! A highly recommended read.

    Book Description

Developed soon after World War II, the de Havilland Beaver has become one of the most successful and long-lived designs in aviation history. The Beaver was conceived as a “half-ton flying pickup truck” capable of setting down on land, water, and snow. Since its conception the Beaver has been adopted worldwide, becoming the floatplane of choice for island-hopping along the Pacific Northwest, flying into the Arctic, transporting missionaries and doctors into remote spots in Africa, and serving as a support aircraft in Antarctic expeditions. The Beaver also became “the generals’ Jeep” during the Korean War — and the generals’ favorite transport to fishing spots in peacetime.

5 out of 5 stars A Love Song to an Airplane........2005-12-03

A Great Airplane, and a Great Example of Niche Marketing.

World War II was an aviation war. Literally thousands of airplanes were produced and offered for sale after the war. While this included P-51's and B-17's, it also included smaller planes such as the small observation planes. The market for most airplane companies was difficult.

de Havilland corporation in Canada looked around for a niche where they could design and build a plane that would sell in sufficient quantity to keep them alive. They decided that they would build the greatest Bush Plane that ever existed. And they did.

The thought when they were doing the design was to build the airplane equivalent of the half-ton pickup. The plane was first designed around a smaller engine, so when they decided to use the P&W 450 hp engine, it became quite a performer.

As a marketing niche during difficult times, it essentially saved de Havilland as an aircraft manufacturer. Almost 2,000 planes were build, a long way from the Cessna/Piper production numbers, but it was a much more expensive airplane.

This book is the story of the plane, and it really describes a love affair with the plane.

I first flew in a Beaver in Viet Nam. Didn't know what it was but enjoyed the flight( didn't get shot at ). It was Olive drab with black insignias. A circle with a Beaver inside surrounded by the words" Low, Slow , Reliable" . My second experience in a Beaver was on floats in Alaska some 15 years later. This plane had fish guts, moose meat and Dall Ram intesines. It was the greatest adventure. I fell in love with the plane, along with the romance and adventures it could bring to you.

This book explains everything about the Beaver. Its conception , its improvements and finally its rightful place in aviation history. The plane has improved since it was first designed and built. Built in Canada, flown mostly by the US and reinvented again in BC and Seattle airplane restoration shops. It truly is an amazing story. This book presents it all, text, photos and anything else you might want to know or see. If you live near the water in the Northwest you will have heard and seen a Beaver. If you have flown in Ak you probaly were close to , if not inside, a Beaver. The book is simply the very best on the subject. Buy it , read it, memorize it. Have fun and happy flying. The only two things could be better than owning this book: 1) owning a real Beaver on floats - about $750K ( or more) 2) Flying a Simulator of a Beaver on Floats. About $150. The book <$20. Oh, you can build models of the Beaver; both non powered and RC vesions both wheels and floats. They just don't seem the same however.

5 out of 5 stars He got d' Beaver Fever.......2000-05-25

All aircraft are good, or else they wouldn't land safely; only a few become legends, such as the Douglas DC - 3 and the de Havilland Beaver, the world's greatest bush plane built in Canada at Downsview, Ontario, from 1947 to 1967.

The Beaver was a typically Canadian project, it is rugged, reliable, durable and practical for people who were haulers of water and hewers of wood. It is the haul-anything, go-anywhere pickup truck of the air; similar to their earthbound brothers before they became "sport utility vehicles" that are too genteel to stray from perfect pavement. The Beaver is 30 feet long, with a 48 foot wingspan, cruises at 125 miles an hour with a 1,500 pound payload -- and weighs less than most SUVs.

Phil Garratt, longtime head of DHC, created the Beaver. Think of him as an original Sam Walton with an MBWA degree -- management by walking around -- long before Walton. Garratt didn't like rules, titles or organization charts. His favorite expression was, "You know what you're here for, go do it." The people who designed and built the first Beaver were like the dot com pioneers of the Internet who became legendary for living on pizza and Pepsi and working around the clock. Under Garratt, there were no time clocks. When workers came late, they worked late. If Sunday was needed for work, then Sunday was a work day. Garratt knew he was building the world's best bush plane, he inspired that vision. People who create exciting new projects sometimes don't rest even on the seventh day.

Sean Rossiter captures the mood and spirit of de Havilland Canada. This isn't a dull, dry, `how I built an airplane' book, it's a story of teamwork, spirit, confidence and fun. When I worked in Test Flight at DHC in the 1960's, it was a company filled with pride, legends and humor. Many stories seemed too fanciful to be true, but most turned out to be solid fact. Rossiter presents facts, stories, legends and with typical Canadian spirit includes the humor. It is a superb book.

In the final analysis, when you look at anything worthwhile, people make the difference. In Canada, just after World War II, there was a glowing confidence that anything could be done. A few miles away at Malton, Canadians built the Avro Jetliner which first flew in 1949. Since neither Canada nor the world needed 1,692 superlative bush planes, most were built for military use. The US bought 980 Beavers, the first foreign planes bought in peacetime by both the US Army and Air Force. The US didn't buy any Jetliners, thus only the one was built (there's an attitude in Canada that if the US doesn't buy a product, then it's not worth buying).

The last Beaver was built in 1967, Canada's Centennial Year. The English owners of DHC closed the production line because the inventory had increased to a couple of unsold aircraft. Today, 53 years after the Beaver's first flight, a thousand or more are still flying. How do you justify making more if they won't wear out?

Several firms in Canada and the US refurbish used Beavers, and some will still fly 50 years from now. These survivors aren't pampered pets of millionaires, carefully tucked into air conditioned hangers; they fly every day over some of the world's most rugged terrain. A century is a long time for the commercial life of any aircraft; but hundreds of Beavers may achieve it.

They're like the Model T Ford, the DC-3, the World War II Jeep -- the best ever built for a specific purpose. But, the world moves on. Today, people want a Lincoln Navigator, a Boeing 737, or a Hummer. Yet, a first love lingers long. One of Canada's best bush plane operators summed up the widespread love of pilots and passengers for this plane, "He got d' Beaver fever."

They couldn't have been built in any country but Canada, and Rossiter nicely sums up this immortal plane and the unforgettable characters who made it so. Read it, and catch some of ". . . d' Beaver fever."

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind .......2007-08-06

I bought this book and i must say it was a very good investment. The book is totally understandable, detailed explanations together with screenshots, i would totally recommend this book for anyone who wants to go into network security...

      5 out of 5 stars Great easy-to-understand quick references.......2006-07-09

This is a great, easy to read and use reference for both non-technical business leaders as well as IT professionals. It is also a great resource for home computer users, and small- to medium-sized businesses who often do not have the resources to hire dedicated security staff. The book covers the entire spectrum of ways in which computer systems can be compromised and attacked, an easy-to-understand description of how the exploits are executed, and, usually lacking in other reference books on this topic, step-by-step instructions for not only how to identify when the hacks occur, but also how to defend against them. Kevin Beaver also includes some very important warnings you need to keep in mind when performing your own vulnerability and hacking tests against your own network and systems to discover your own technical weaknesses.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR THE UNEXPERIENCED.......2006-07-06

This book is great for beginners, it talks about the ethical hacker and penetration tests. However it also gives out information that can be used for blackhat hacking. It walks you through a tutorial step by step, and gives out names of some other books that can be helpful. If you have no or little experience this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Real world information for Network Security.......2006-06-27

Hacking for Dummies sets a foundation for ethical hacking and should be used as more than the proverbial "how to". When reading the pages, try to realize that you are not just learning true methods of attack; you are also gaining valuable information for prevention.
Businesses, red teams, or professional security consultants will find this book as a top 5 reference toward understanding the attack, and a primer in the defense of a network.
For me, a fellow CISSP, Kevin's book rates up there with Eric Cole's "Hackers Beware".

2 out of 5 stars Its a good book for people with no common sense at all.......2006-03-10

I think all the Dummies books are good specially for the people who are dummy in the field and dummy in life as well. By dummy in life I mean they cant even use their common sense for thing. For example Although it did gave some good hacking sites but then it took so many pages explaining that you can also hack by looking over the shoulder of a person who is entering his userid/pwd I would call it DUHHHH!!.

      2 out of 5 stars Christian centric.......2006-01-29

The book is well organized and indexed. It includes a glossary of over 1,100 entries. It is also nicely illustated, with over 200 photographs, nearly half of them in color.

I had hoped that this book would be a fairly balanced exploration of the world's spirituality. It is not. It is more a history of religion with a Christian bias. In each section, except those dedicated to Christianity, one clearly gets the sense that it is written from the perspective of an outsider. Dismissive statements and questionable conclusions are the rule.

Take heed from the book's preface concerning the 52 contributors listed; "They write from a Christian concern to descibe each faith 'as it is'...If conviction shows through, however, it is because there can never be total objectivity when it comes to deeply-held matters of belief."

      Indeed.

3 out of 5 stars informative, but highly opinionated.......2003-04-19

this book gives a basic overview of the worlds religions, but i found it a bit frustrating to read. in my opinion, anyone wishing to read the basic facts of each religion out of curiousity alone, will find that certian excerpts are highly opinionated. the section on buddhism, one part of it is titled, "the appeal of buddhism in the west", this is not problem, but do we need support why "people can live good lives only when given new life by jesus christ, otherwise they are powerless... and ...unable to escape the cycle of sin and death...." one other example is in response to a zen buddihist excerpt which the authors says, "this thinking is pushed to the absurd, it is useless to seek rational answers to them, the tension they produce must be borne to the utmost...." there are many other statments like these peppered throughout this book. on the other hand it does have some good information making it a useful introduction to the many religions. maybe the best thing would be a more appropiate title for the book, so that people who would like a nuetral yet informative approach will be better informed.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB SURVEY AND INVALUABLE REFERENCE BOOK.......2000-12-09

I am enrolled in a masters program where this is an assigned text for an elective. After having been force-fed literally hundreds of readings from hundreds of books - this book stood out as the only text that I purchased. It is a fantastic, impartial, overview which includes great illustrations and charts. It is equally rewarding to read straight through, only the parts that interest you or as a handy reference.
