We Need More Northern Whitetail Books.......2003-07-10
As a northern deer hunter I am delighted with this book. Most of the whitetail deer books out there (at least the managment ones) are based in the south. Ozaga's book rings home with this Michigan guy.
The book is packed with great info on northern deer behavior. The photos are good and the research is sound. I wish there were more out there like it. So far, next to Alsheimer's deer books this is my favorite. I also just found a great northern food plot and habitat book called "Grow 'Em Right" by Dougherty and Dougherty which is right on the money up here in cold country.
An Excellent Choice For Any Deer Hunter.......2001-12-17
It is not often that one encounters a book that answers long standing questions, especially those that arise from the contradictions found in the popular deer hunting press. There is nothing Gee Whiz about Mr. Ozoga, he tells it like he sees it. When he doesn't know he tells you that too. This book is based on 30 years observation and experimentation on white tails at the Cusino Wildlife Research Station and dispels many of the myths and folklore regarding deer.
Be aware, however, that this book is not easy reading, but seems to be based on the discussion and conclusion sections of his research papers. It is approachable and yields to the diligent reader. It is well worth the effort and the price.
I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Barton's review.
John Ozoga Whitetail Intrigue.......2001-06-02
I have been studying and hunting Whitetail deer for over 30 years and this book actually contains useful information. Too many times books of this sort are centered on some gimmick to kill the big one. This is not the case with Ozoga's work, you will come away with a deeper understanding of the deer's habits, social order and habitat requirements. Especially for the northern deer herd. For anyone who has an interest in Whitetails this is a must read.
Product Description
Esteemed for its speed and athleticism, admired for its grace and beauty, coveted for its hunting prowess, the cheetah has nonetheless been harassed and hounded to the point of extinction. Author Luke Hunter looks into the history, evolution, behavior and day-to-day survival of one of the most fascinating of the big cats. He discusses the ancestry of the cheetah, its hunting strategies, reproduction, social behavior and status throughout Africa and Iran - the last remaining pocket of the species in Asia. Hunter also focuses on the tenuous future of the cheetah, its decreasing habitat and declining numbers, and deals with the immediate and long-term conservation issues facing the species. His authoritative text highlights the latest research on cheetahs, dispelling the myths and providing a comprehensive overview of the cheetah in the wild. Throughout the book, his first-hand field observations supplement data on the latest ecological discoveries from cheetah researchers across Africa. Powerful, full-color photographs by Dave Hamman make this book a visual feast and reveal a world that is both intensely private and highly dramatic. Hamman's portrayal of the many modes and activities of this elusive animal presents a sumptuous gallery of photographs, while at the same time serving to broaden our knowledge - and help ensure the survival - of this remarkable and beautiful cat.

A must have for fans of the cheetah.......2005-10-16
This is such a beautifully presented book and takes pride of place in my collection. I've never come across such a comprehensive book on the cheetah and the photographs are extraordinary.
I give both thumbs up to the author and all his work, as the resultant book is my favourite.

This is the story of a dedicated group that goes to Antarctica to study the Weddell seal, the only mammal on earth able to survive year-round in the most extreme Antarctic temperatures.
Customer Reviews:
Engaging book on Antarctic research and on the Weddell seal .......2007-01-14
_The Hunter's Breath_ by Terrie M. Williams is an engaging account of six field seasons the author and seven colleague spent studying the Weddell seal of the Antarctic, where they spent 10 weeks at a time in a camp on the sea ice of McMurdo Sound, off the western coast of Ross Island, situated near openings in the ice where seals could haul out and sun themselves (and in particular pregnant seals could give birth, and raise their pups).
For years scientists had been frustrated in studying the Weddell seal, in particular observing how they feed and behave beneath the ice. The seals operated under many meters of ice, in very deep and very cold waters that were inaccessible to human divers and even submersible robotic probes. In 1997 miniaturized video technology finally caught up with the dreams of Dr. Williams and other researchers. Williams and her colleagues invented a device called a VDAP or Video Data Acquisition Platform, a waterproof device able to withstand tremendous pressure that could house a Sony 8mm video camera connected to a microcomputer. Also connected to the computer were an array of sensors, including devices to measure dive depth, swimming speed, compass bearings, heart rate, water temperature, a hydrophone to record sounds heard and emitted by the seal (seals are very vocal underwater), and a tiny acceleratometer mounted near the seal's tail to record the swing of every flipper stroke. Attached to the seal on a neoprene pad, the devices performed brilliantly.
The device invented, the team selected with great care a suitable study area and camp site. They wanted to find an area containing cracks large enough to allow the seals to breathe and haul out but not so thin or fractured as to be unable to support the weight of the camp.
The team went to great efforts to counter the various dangers posed by Antarctic research, notably frostbite, hypothermia, dehydration, and the sometimes fierce weather. They contended with temperatures as low as -70 degrees Fahrenheit and hurricane-force blizzards called herbies, monstrous storms with driving grit-like ice blown in from the continent in winds between 60 and 75 miles per hour. After three back-to-back herbies and then an actual snowfall the camp site had so much snow that the ice started to bend and the camp started to sink; quick work was required to save the facility.
Their efforts were well worth it, as they accumulated many dozens of hours of footage of seals beneath the ice, mountains of data, and enough results for a slew of scientific papers. You can see some video stills (along with many of the test subject seals, such Ally McSeal, their first test subject seal, Godzilla, the only male they used, and Ms. Zodiac, a lazy seal that spent so much time on the ice sunning herself that they eventually removed her equipment) in beautiful photographs in the book.
Although the trials and tribulations of the researchers were interesting the seals were the stars of the book. A mild-mannered species of phocid seal, Weddell seals are the only year-around mammalian resident on the permanent ice shelf in Antarctica. They survive colder temperatures, dive deeper, and live further south than Antarctica's three other seal species (Ross, Leopard, and crabeater). They are usually nine feet or more in length and average about three and a half feet in width in the middle. Colors range from bluish-black to soft gray and they have whitish spots that are particularly prominent on their upturned bellies when they sun themselves (originally they were called sea leopards). They were first mentioned by Captain James Weddell in a book recounting his Antarctic explorations from 1822-1824 and formally scientifically described a few years later. Though apparently not seriously hunted by sealers, some were killed by Antarctic explorers to provide blubber to burn for heat and to melt snow and ice for drinking water (explorers as a result often appeared dirty in photographs thanks to the oily soot of Weddell blubber) and to feed sled dogs.
Weddell seals are champion divers; only sperm whales and elephant seals can perform as well or better. She compared the dives of these seals to a person running a 10K race on a single breath of air. They can travel up to four miles under solid ice on one breath, can stay submerged up to 82 minutes (a typical dive is 20 minutes), and dive to depths of 1,312 feet.
The seals have huge eyes to enable them to see in the depths, eyes two and a half times the size of a human's, almost the size of a tennis ball. This, along with their keen hearing and whiskers enable to them be excellent hunters of giant Antarctic cod, schools of flittering Antarctic silverfish, and fish dubbed "borks" (_Pagothenia borchgrevinki_), which live just beneath the ice in 27 degree Fahrenheit water.
Every year the seals make an annual trek under miles of solid sea ice to ice cracks in McMurdo Sound to find mates and raise pups, as cracks always open in the ice in certain areas thanks to tidal stresses and ocean currents. Simply getting there is a tremendous feat, requiring unerring navigation and careful calculations of how far they can get on a breath of air; to make a mistake would mean drowning. They make use of every single hole, weak spot, or air pocket they can find to get a breath along the way, covering a distance of 80 miles from the open sea to their final destination (30 miles more than normal thanks to the giant iceberg B-15, 170 mile long and 1000 feet thick iceberg that completely disrupted the annual cycle of sea ice formation, breakup, and dispersal). In addition, their anatomy is adapted to enlarging even the smallest hole in the ice; their large, reinforced canine teeth stick out from their skulls, giving them a bucktooth-appearance but enabling the seals to scrape ice from the sides of holes in a behavior termed reaming.
Hot read for cold subject.......2004-04-16
Dr. Terrie Williams has written an enchanting book about her research and her enthusiasm for the natural world---a world few of us have the chance to experience. The book blends the rigor of her scientific approach with a fine-tuned talent for story telling. If this book were an eye into the harsh world of the Antarctic it would have a twinkle in it.

Book Description
Hunter and Stripe are best friends. This young raccoon pair loves to do everything together, like dress in striped sweaters, read the same stories, and even eat the same lunch -- a crawfish sandwich, huckleberries, and milk. But when Stripe arrives one day at school in a mischief-making mood and starts stirring up trouble in Mr. Ringtail's class, should Hunter follow along?
Laura Malone Elliott and Lynn Munsinger introduce two delightful pals who will entertain young children as they also provide an important look at peer pressure and first friendships.
Customer Reviews:
My daughter loves this book!.......2004-03-06
My daughter will be 3 in April and we discovered this book at the library while picking out books after story time. She wants to read this one every night at bedtime, so I plan to buy it for her for her birthday. I echo all the other reviews, and agree that I think it is one that should be in every child's library! Even though the situations in the book happen to "raccoon children" they are real life situations that could happen to any "human child". Great job!
Great book!.......2003-05-13
I bought this book for my nephew who is named Hunter!
It's a great story--with a message, but not in a pushy way.
Peer pressure is a difficult subject to address; this book handles it superbly!!
Can a best friend, help his friend be his best self?.......2002-10-05
As an educator of young children for over twenty-five years, I find Hunter's Best Friend at School by Laura Elliott to be one of the best books I have ever read, dealing with being true to one's self. All children want to be liked and often do things that they would not otherwise do, just to be accepted. Hunter and Stripe are such friends, yet with the help of his mother and his teacher, Hunter is able to set an example that encourages Stripe to be "his best self." This book is absolutely delightful and entertaining. The words, the illustrations, the message of being true to oneself is certainly needed in today's world. I read it to a Kindergarten class that was spellbound by the second page. The school librarian is going to order one copy for each of the primary classes at our school. My own grandsons, age five and seven, were touched by Hunter's example, with the five-year-old saying, "my eyes are getting wet from hearing that story" and the seven-year-old saying, "I have that problem with my friend." Out of the mouth of babes is a telling review of this wonderful book and I would encourage every parent and grandparent to include it in their children's library as soon as possible.
An endearing tale about being your "best self!".......2002-09-25
Ms. Elliot has followed up her acclaimed book for young adults, "Under a War-Torn Sky", with a charming new book for 2-6 year olds. My children love to hear about the little racoon's dilemma about following along with his best pal's naughty antics versus trying to inspire his friend to behave as his "best self." The story is wonderfully entertaining (my son walks around quoting his favorite characters' lines!), the illustrations are adorable, and the book teaches a valuable message for kids of all ages. Hunter has become my children's favorite book -- I highly recommend it!
A must for kindergarten classrooms!.......2002-08-12
This is an adorable book which will grab a child's attention from the beginning. I think this must become a staple for every kindergarten classroom. I was in public education at the kindergarten level. The lesson taught here on "peer" pressure, is a lesson that cannot be taught too early in a child's school career. The illustrations are wonderful too! Ms. Elliott and Ms. Munsinger, congratulations! You have done it again!
Book Description
Africa's wild cats have long been a focus of fascination and intrigue among travelers and wildlife lovers. Alongside the big three -- lion, leopard, and cheetah -- Africa is home to another seven species of cats: the caracal, serval, African wildcat, black-footed cat, African golden cat, jungle cat, and sand cat.
With photographer Gerald Hinde's stunning, crisp, graphic images, Luke Hunter presents a comprehensive overview of the entire cat family in Africa -- the only place on Earth where sightings of wild cats are a regular occurrence. He discusses in detail feline anatomy, predation and hunting strategies, social systems, competition and conflict, and conservation and threats, offering the reader the most current research and findings.
From the famous and popular African parks with their celebrated, safari-friendly felines, to the few remaining places on the continent uninhabited by humans, Cats of Africa offers superb and exciting images of the animals from a variety of locations, depicting rare and interesting behavior, some of which has never before been recorded.

A 'must' for any collection serious about representing African natural history.......2007-04-11
Africa holds some of the most amazing cats on Earth but rarely are these given full-page embellishment and in-depth discussion as they are in Cats of Africa: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation. The oversize stature makes CATS OF AFRICA look like a coffee table guide but the abundance of text and natural history promises both general-interest and college-level libraries a satisfying blend of color and fact. From feline anatomy and evolution to populations, social systems, threats and cooperative hunting patterns, CATS OF AFRICA is a 'must' for any collection serious about representing African natural history - and will find its home on many general-interest library shelves as a fascinating addition for the general public as well.

4 1/2 The Moose in Winter.......2005-10-30
"Even for a moose, Moose was funny looking. His eyes were as tiny as marbles. His nose looked like a huge baked potato. His knees knocked. But nobody noticed how funny looking Moose was. And all because of his antlers."
So begins this witty and original 53-page chapter book about a moose coping with his dropped antlers. Panicked, he calls his mom, who reassures him that they'll grow back, bigger and stronger than ever. Still, young Moose doesn't feel Moose-ish anymore. Furthermore, it's now hunting season, and Moose must stay inside. Only his art, his doughnut baking and his friend Hildy (an optimistic pig with a big heart and a ready laugh) keep Moose's boredom at bay.
Contrary to author Greene's premise that Moose must stay indoors, Moose takes his doughnuts and paintings to the forest. Here, he meets a blue-collar hunter so bad at hunting that he figures all the moose "were lying on the beach somewhere, sipping fancy drinks and eating tortilla chips." Moose cleverly disguises his Moose-hood, ("Say aren't you a moose?..." "Have you ever heard of a moose who cooks?") and the two have doughnuts. Moose even sells him some paintings, and he tells the hunter/failed artist, "There's no such thing as good or bad in art"..."there's just different styles." The absent-minded hunter has two more encounters with moose, not realizing that each time he's seeing Moose, and each time, Moose helps the somewhat ill suited outdoorsman. The hunter is impressed: "Take it from me... There's no good or bad with moose; there are just different styles."
Greene is a clever writer, and the dialogue between Moose and hunter is very funny. She's also very imaginative in her portrayal of the doughnut making, painting, rowing, checkers-playing, and slightly vain moose. I thought that Hildy got a bit lost in the narrative, and it initially threw me that the hunter didn't recognize Moose after three meetings. Still, the book succeeds on its humor, and the simple message of acceptance of oneself and others. The book meanders a bit--there's no real main point--but I enjoyed this character driven approach (versus a more linear plot). The short chapters can stand alone for brief reading or the ambitious reader/listener can consume it all at once. (The repetitive language and short sentences make this a good one for the young-though not beginning-readers.) The black and white pictures by Joe Mathieu, done in pencil, pen, India ink, and gray wash, are nicely shaded and evoke the cold but northern beautiful winter and spring. Greene is currently working on another `Moose and Hildy' book; I'm looking forward to reviewing it.

Mysterious Mammal Behavior.......2003-04-03
How many people reading this know that badgers and coyotes sometimes enter into cooperative relationships in order to hunt more successfully? Elegant, artful, and playful illustations accompany a blunt text about hunger and duress during a drought in the U.S. Southwest. A single mother badger with two dependent pups teams up with an old coyote to hunt for food. Working together they are able to secure enough food for themselves as well as the two young pups. But when one pup is taken for food by an eagle, the mother badger takes the remaining pup and moves on. Eventually, the drought ends. Many of the pictures feature cross sections into the desert floor. Root masses, rocks, and rodent warrens are visible in the manner of an 'Ant Farm' toy. Each picture features shards of broken pottery embedded underground. There are also the ancient and crumbling structures left behind by the Anasazi people over a thousand years ago. The animals have inherited it all.
The author provides an engaging and educational 'afterward' to the story describing his fascination with the Southwest, the Anasazi and the behavior of coyotes and badgers. When he says that he has actually observed a coyote and a badger interacting cooperatively, I was glad that he was inspired to write this beautiful book.

Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance (revised edition)
ASIN: 0803258658 |
Book Description
From the Foreword—The Grizzly Bear by William H. Wright, first published in 1909, is one of the best all-around books ever written on the subject. It is both highly informative and entertaining. . . . Wright began as a bear-hunter, and an extraordinarily successful one. He pitted his own strength, endurance, ingenuity, skill, knowledge, and craftiness against that of the grizzlies. . . . His most remarkable achievement as a hunter was killing five grizzlies with five shots, which he called "the greatest bag of grizzlies that I have ever made single-handed." . . . His book shows a hunter becoming a naturalist: Wright first studied the grizzly in order to hunt him, then he came to hunt him in order to study him.
The Grizzly Bear treats the early history of the grizzly as recorded by the white man and the life and escapades of James Capen ["Grizzly"] Adams, and most important it recounts the true-life experiences of Wright himself. Although I have spent some eighteen years studying the grizzly, eight of them intensively, there are few points on which I would take issue with the accuracy of Wright's observations o his interpretations of what he saw—Frank C. Craighead, Jr.
Customer Reviews:
TIMELESS CLASSIC.......2005-09-30
An early masterpiece of bear literature. It is easy to see why so many subsequent authors refer to, and liberally 'paraphrase' Wright's work. Almost a hundred years after it was written, it is amazing to realize how much later writers based their work on this book. Wright chronicles his rise from enthusiastic bear hunter to preservationist who regrets his earlier bloodthirst. He debunks some of the bear myths of his day, and while some of his conclusions have proven incorrect with time, he is frequently on target. Any one who has admiration for the grizzly should have this in their library.
