Visually Arresting but a Disappointment.......2007-08-21
While packed with lovely photographs and high quality printing, this volume is a real disappointment. It strikes me as not knowing its market--it is quite superficial and not for the serious horseperson, but by the same token doesn't seem aimed at those with a romantic affection for equestrian matters or the "lifestyle."
Book Description
Among the earliest known works on choosing, caring for, and riding horses, this book is still hailed — 2,300 years after it was written — as one of the most complete, thoughtful, and accessible guides of its type. Morris H. Morgan's fluid translation features 38 illustrations of this classic's practical tips and enlightened observations.
Customer Reviews:
A very interesting read.......2007-09-15
Xenophon covers several aspects of horsemanship, from grooming, leading, and choosing a horse, to mounting, riding, and training a war mount. Very, very interesting to see what is still applicable today. While this isn't a "training" or even a "horse care book," its a great historical reference from those interested in how horses we cared for and trained 2000 years ago. However, for those looking for a story or a book to teach riding skills, I suggest you look elsewhere. Those interested in dressage will find this worth-while, as it is considered the oldest text on the subject.
Evidence of Ancient Humanism .......2007-06-27
Xenophon's philosophy and many techniques, though tailored for the development of a war-horse, demonstrate the ageless capacity for human empathy toward the horse. The horse centered work makes the goal of a harmonious partnership attainable. The book interweaves aspects of barn management, riding technique, and early human psychological insights. The translation keeps this work relevant and vibrant. The overriding theme is one of responsibility for the education and wellbeing of the horse. It is, if nothing else, a comfort to read that some horses in the ancient world were treated humanely in the training process...even if under the unfortunate auspices of a warrior culture. Kurt Hartle, Reydon,Suffolk. UK
A "Must" For The Serious Horse Owner's/ Trainer's Library.......2005-09-23
The first ever book of it's kind on selecting, training and riding horses, eloquently written by an articulate ancient Greek horseman. A quick read but entertaining and enlightening. This English translation is very fluid and easy to understand. Xenophon covers all the basics of horse husbandry that are still followed 2500 years later. If you are thinking of owning or training a horse, this work is a good place to start.
The Art of Horsemanship by Xenophon.......2005-09-19
Well translated version of the first book written on horsemanship. Translator has added interesting facts in a separate chapter concerning horses in Greek times 2500 years ago.For a student of horsemanship this book is highly recommended as the nature of the horse is considered as an important factor in his training.
The great-great-great-grandfather of dressage........2003-12-06
Before there was dressage there was Xenophon. He was a general and horseman, though it's hard to tell which he was first. It doesn't take a genius to realize that the man knew what he was talking about - otherwise we wouldn't be reading his words MILLENIA after he wrote them. I wonder if his horses felt they were lucky he was their rider - I know I feel lucky that we can still read his ideas.

Book Description
An extremely rare and conspicuous find of oriental riding costumes in the late antique necropolis of Antinoopolis (Middle Egypt) brought together a number of specialists piecing together their evolution and historical context.
The first part deals with the evolution and distribution of the oriental riding costume in the Middle and Near East through the ages and the historical background on the find spot.
The second part focuses on the original costumes in various museum collections including much so far unpublished material, technical researches and reconstructions. Surprising new insights on the social background of their owners has been obtained by carefully studying and piecing together the finding context. Also the representations of riding costumes in and on different monuments are carefully examined. The book is richly illustrated with colour and black and white plates.

Superb narration about the early years of motion pictures........1999-05-27
Filled with adventure, romance and intrigue coupled with its historical setting this book tells the story of the early background players in motion pictures. Although it revolves around the authors father, cowboy, stuntman Jack Montgomery the tales she tells are indicative of a way of life that are long gone as are most of the background players of the golden era of western movies. It tells of the "real" cowboy migration of the western plains to become the "reel" cowboys of motion pictures and the code that they brought with them. This book will make you laugh and cry; it will fill you with excitement; provide insight to the disdain for human and animal care by early Hollywood. This book answers the question, "Where did they come from and how did they do it."
Customer Reviews:
Ideal for anyone.......2001-10-10
I first read this book as a beginner looking to get into reining. I found it easy to understand and the concepts very clear. I still refer to it constantly for training and conditioning tips. It's a very well written book, and is not at all 'difficult' to read. In fact, I found it hard to put down! A great book and well worth a look.
A Top Book On Western Riding.......2000-04-17
This wonderfully photographed and diagrammed book is not just for trainers of reining horses -- riders will love it as well. Loomis presents a clear and methodical training program for the reining prospect. Loomis begins by introducing his philosophy of horsemanship (think not intimidate), the importance of breeding and conformation, then moves to ground work, basic training, conditioning ("never let your horse run out of air"), suppling exercises, body alignment (importance of circles) and advanced manuevers. He is comprehensive, covering shoeing, equipment, and show preparation as well. As the book title says, Loomis approaches Western horsemanship as an art, and he is a master.
Because Loomis is so thorough, non-beginning riders interested in improving their horsemanship will find a wealth of information here. Many horsemanship books suffer from authors unable to convey in written words "the feel" of the horse in response to a cue. With co-author Kadash, Loomis presents his concepts lucidly. The diagrammed sample exercises illustrated throughout the book are another valuable resource for an intructorless rider.
Loomis teaches the reader to think, about how the horse thinks and how the horseman thinks. Trainer or rider, with this book the reader will never stop learning how to improve from whatever level he is at. A tremendous resource!
Excellent book on Western Horsemanship.......2000-03-29
This is a must read for trainers in any Western discipline. Bob has written a book on how to make a well-broke horse; one that can go in any direction. The information is organized and specific, from evaluating a performance prospect, riding a 2, then 3 year old and on to competition. A great book for anyone looking to lay down a solid foundation for any horse.

The best How To, and, What To Expect for beginner riders.......1999-12-10
I was truly blessed at an early age to have this and Gymkhana in my room when I first began to ride. This is a marvelous and loving look at children and horseback riding. Any parent with a child, particularly a daughter, beginning Enlgish riding instruction ought to make every effort to find this book. Like my tattered copy, it will become an heirloom. PCK, NJ.
A British cartoonist looks at learning to ride a pony.......1998-12-30
This is one of my favorite books from childhood. A tongue-in-cheek riding instruction manual, it is filled with cartoons about the antics of girls and their sometimes-naughty ponies. Add subtle British humor to the mix, and it's a must for girls in that "horsey" stage . . . my 10-year-old adores it!
Cartoons of children in formal English atop fat littleponies.......1998-03-10
Everything you ever experienced at a riding academy with a chuckle on every page. Or if you've never been to a riding academy, you'll want to after looking this over. Angie Lohman
