5 out of 5 stars "...the result of all our travels will be to arrive back where we started, and know it for the very first time.".......2005-10-21

Lucky Dogs hold a Zen quintessence that can only be approximated by the sobriquet "Bourbon Street Steak," and are oddly more satisfying than Café du Monde beignets and chicory coffee in invoking memories of New Orleans and her pleasures.

Are Lucky Dogs, therefore, our petite Madeleine dipped in tea? Proust's ghost will not say, for now is discretion, and these are our memories, after all.

Historian Jerry Strahan has had a very American career. He is a respected and indeed famous and authoritative scholar of military history, but like many a family man needed to provide for his brood with a higher cash flow than itinerant academic leavings would provide, and fell into managing the Lucky Dog operation through those twin hands, fate and opportunity surrounded by less appealing alternatives. Over the decades he grew into the job, and even expanded the operation to Washington, D.C., where I was a happy customer.

Strahan's academic career is only a leitmotif in "Managing Ignatius: The Lunacy of Lucky Dogs and Life in New Orleans" for he places the characters of the vendors he deals with and his colorful memories front and center. For those not in the know, the "Ignatius" of the title is the immortal character of John Kennedy Toole's "Confederacy of Dunces" who has a comic scene selling weenies from a push wagon that is possibly one of the greatest memorable pieces of character and action reinforcing each other in American literature. To describe this scene as classic damns it with faint praise, for it simultaneously captures the character, the city, the soul, comedy, and tragedy in a single sustained breath. It should be a tattoo, and no American high school student should be unfamiliar with it.

And the primary emphasis of "Managing Ignatius" story is that Strahan works with many who are at the margins of employability, yet have personalities that draw you. "Managing Ignatius" therefore should serve as a management science alternative textbook, for indeed Strahan's goal is to sell weenies with a volatile cast and crew. He makes many bricks with very little straw.

Yet, there is a very tender side to his memoir, for Strahan never deprecates nor condemns even the most fricative people he must motivate. Indeed, he often observes that some of his most prickly characters end up being the best and most enduring vendors, and acknowledges that in an odd way many of them have found their calling in life, just as Strahan has found his.

This is an excellent, amusing, informative book that commands attention on multiple levels, and is not simply for tourists of New Orleans or Toole fans. For the story Strahan tells here is like our own as even the soul has a journey in life. In "Managing Ignatius" Strahan tells that story and "...the result of all our travels will be to arrive back where we started, and know it for the very first time." (T.S. Eliot)

4 out of 5 stars Don't be a meanie!.......2005-09-23

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this--a great companion to John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces. What I enjoyed most were the vignettes of collected memories of those who've pushed the weinie carts. I've probably purchased a weinie or two from some of those very people, which reinforces my belief that everyone has a story and that some of our stories are more interesting than others. I'd much rather read anecdotes about the fallen and runaways and drunks and misfits than bios of those more fortunate, like a Donald Trump per se. What you get a sense of in reading "Managing Ignatius" is the importance of life, its simplicity, its pain, its brevity, its humor and joy. There are lots of funny, laugh-out-loud sections in this book. The only detraction is the author's tendency to stray away from the weinie cart pushers and focus on himself and his personal endeavors. These parts I found mostly uninteresting, but not enough to diminish all of what's right with this read. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Dahlin', Jerry is telling it for True........2004-07-20

I grew up in New Orleans and spent a lot of time in the Quarter eating "Lucky Dogs" aka Bourbon Street Steaks. The characters are not exaggerations. From the shake down cops, to the vendors from Mars, Jerry is tellin' it for true. A visit with these characters is a great way to pass a good time.

5 out of 5 stars "Ya didn't hav ta be there".......2003-11-06

You didn't have to be there, however if you were, you'll know. Now, if you have ever been in the food service industry, regardless of the establishment, you will recognize these characters and know what it is to "manage" them. This is one of very few books that I read over and over again. I relish just opening it up and reading a few paragraphs. I was joyously
surprised with this gift of a book. It is fluid, fun and more factual then you may want to know! This IS New Orleans. I know. I was born, bread, and fried there. This may be a story for "our" eyes only. I can smell the streets and feel the night. The hot, sweaty, sticky nights, and sticky shoes. I can taste the bourbon from the bottom of the cart...I can feel their pain. This is a great read. Read it before you go there,
or read it on the bus home. Moreover, pass it along. This is a great afternoon read wherever you may be. This is a long story, with a long shelf life. Like my life, so far, it just goes on and on and on......

Book Description

". . . A beautifully composed exposition of the work that Father Greg Boyle, S.J., has done with young Latino gang members of East Los Angeles. Boyle has received national recognition for his dedicated efforts to redirect lives: finding jobs and decent alternative schooling and offering unqualified support and love. . . . Boyle couldn't save all the "homies" from the results of gang-banging, gun attacks, alcohol, dope, and prison, but they knew he was there, and many have made it to responsible adulthood."—Library Journal

Originally published in 1995, this paperback edition updates us on the lives of the homeboys with whom Father Greg Boyle continues to work, allowing for a unique analysis as to how some former gang members are able to make it out, while others are not.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-05-07

My husband and I recently heard a taped interview with Father Boyle that aired on NPR. We were very interested in learning more about his unique outreach efforts with LA Gang members. This book is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, enlightening, captivating story.......2007-04-05

"G-Dog and the Homeboys" shows how Father Greg Boyle and a select few adults, including the author, completely changed the lives of teens in East LA. Greg opened the homies' and his followers' eyes to the world outside of their lives in their little neighborhood. Many kids would not think past selling drugs to earn a little extra cash, or firing off a couple of rounds of bullets in order to simply stay alive. Boyle changed all of this.
In actuality, the homies were not violent, cruel, or evil kids at heart. Many had rotten home lives and joined gangs to find love. Others joined for protection. Gangs offered support if they were ever in serious danger.
Father Greg understood and felt for these teens. Greg lent them helping hand in any way he could. He gave them money for school, jobs, even a roof over their heads. However, the best gift he gave the homies was his love and caring for them.
As one follows the stories of numerous homies, one realizes how much of an impact one man, Father Greg, had on their lives. This story is touching, at times frightening, and over all, enlightening. It is highly recommended that you read "G-Dog and the Homeboys". Your eyes, too, will be opened to the world around you.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, straightforward story about one of the saints among us.......2007-03-28

This book is quite unlike any other that I have read on crime or gangs, both in style and in substance.

The style is very simple. Fremon makes no attempt to be objective. She makes no effort to put the story into any larger context. She does not come across like a professional writer of any kind. Her ego is absent from the work. Instead, she tells a story, a simple, moving story.

The subject of her story is extraordinary. John Paul II liked to say that there are many more saints around us then we recognize. This story is another example of that. Father Greg Boyle is a normal suburban white guy who became a priest, and was sent to East LA. He found himself surrounded by gang violence. Nothing unusual in the story so far.

But his reaction was extraordinary. He responded to the situation in a radically Christian manner. He did not get into any of the usual left wing politics or posturing. Instead, he offered the gang members uncondititional love, just as the Gospel teaches. He spent time with them. He visited them in jail. He visited them in the hospital. Whenever the guns went off, he was there trying to bring peace. In one extraordinary incident, he put himself between two gangs who were starting a fire fight, and told them that if they wanted to kill each other, they would have to kill him. He was risking his life doing this, and the gang members knew it. They did not shoot; his Christian witness brought them back from their madness.

It took time, but the gang members responded to Father Greg's ministry with tremendous enthusiasm and love. It is an incredibly inspiring story. It reminds us of why we are Christians. It shows us the transforming power of Christian love.

I would like to be able to draw some political conclusions from all of this. I would like to somehow replace our current approach to gangs with Father Greg's approach. I do not know how to do that. I can not see how to make his saintly approach work in ordinary political or police work. But I do know that we are all better people with someone like him among us. If we had more like him, the world would be healed.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Full of Wonder.......2007-02-08

A wonderful read that can be shared with reluctant readers to bring them face to face with their place in modern literature. A book that should be shared with more teenagers. A look at gang life/ prisons in our urban world through the eyes of someone on a shared journey. I shared this book and another series that Celeste wrote in LA Weekly (2005) with my students as a combination class: experience of life literature and morality. Father Boyle is a master at understanding humanity and our call to larger social responsibility. We are not permitted to dismiss the world around us after reading this book that tugs at the corners of your heart. Greg gives hope where it is needed the most - to everyone. If the opportunity to hear Father Greg Boyle speak presents itself, do yourself a favor and go.

5 out of 5 stars FATHER BOYLE IS WONDERFUL!.......2006-11-02

Although I have not read this book, I did watch a lecture by Father Boyle given at Regis University. It is amazing what he has accomplished in LA with these gang members. It is a true testament to what God can do if given the chance!

Book Description

Owning a dog in the city has a completely different set of challenges than owning a dog in a rural or suburban setting. The city is full of distractions for a dog such as congestion, noise, crowds of people, cars, buses, bicycles, rollerbladers, trash, sewers, alleys, roadways and other dogs. Where you can exercise your dog is limited, and maneuvering a dog through city streets and across busy roadways is often hazardous. Rat poison sprinkled in alleyways, garbage on the sidewalk and around bins, and city puddles filled with unknown substances are all threats to any dog's health. In this book, Cis Frankel, an urban dog trainer who has trained thousand of dogs including Oprah Winfrey's cocker Spaniels, Solomon and Sophie, explains how to deal with the specific difficulties of living with a dog in the city. Believing that the best city dog is a well-trained dog, Cis explores the basics of puppy training (housebreaking, obedience, basic commands) and then delves into the particularities of training and owning a dog in the city. The informative and easy-to-access text covers collars and leash handling, navigating the streets, housebreaking in a high-rise, managing parks, crowds and roadways to create street-smart dogs, stressful situations to avoid, and health care specifics for city dogs. This one-of-a-kind book shows how to get the most out of your dog while living in the city, and how to get the most out of the city for your dog.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the best training book for a city dog.......2007-02-12

I have read various books about dog training but this one is the only one that I have found that addresses the problems that a dog living in a city might face. He needs to know how to recognize the difference between the sidewalk and the street, how to look before crossing, etc. This book is necessary if you have a dog and walk it around high traffick areas, or even for suburban dog owners who want to protect their dogs from neighborhood traffick.

5 out of 5 stars Crucial Book if you have a puppy/Crucial Reference Tool.......2005-12-19

Most dog trainin books out there fall into two categories
1. Those books that assume you live on a farm and the dog can run an play on large acres of land- and you have 24 hours a day available to train.
or 2. The books that teach very specialized "dog tricks".

However, those types of books do not address the situation I was facing. I live in a city appartment and I work full time. I needed my dog to be housebroken, to come to me when told, to get on well with other dogs, and lastly (but by no means leastly) not run out into traffic.
Urban Dog addresses all these and other issues faced by city dog owners (a demographic long neglected by previous dog training books). It is easy to read and the tips are useful and simple to practice- however the book is very clear that training must be often and on a consistent basis.
It is a good book to keep on the shelf even when the puppy gets older- some new issues may come up or the dog might regress a little bit. So it is good to check what Urban Dog has to say on such an issue.

Happy Training.

5 out of 5 stars The title is misleading.......2002-08-15

This, easy to follow, training manual is not just for the Urban Dog and its owner, these training methods are for everyone!

Frankel's training methods are well suited to any environment. Her tips are well researched and supported by experts in their fields. And the section on leash control is invaluable.

I have been active in the world of dogs for many years, but I never had amazingly well trained dogs until I met Cis. I have trained 5 of my own dogs with Cis, before, during and after the publishing of her book. My dogs are well known for their obedience, and manners. I can take them anywhere, be it city, suburb, country or hotel, and never worry about what they might do to embarrass me.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Training Manual!.......2001-06-11

I was impressed with this training book from the word go. Cis, a Chicago based dog Trainer, has covered many of the issues that most dog training books over look. Things like leash mechanics, introducing a new puppy to an adult dog and much, much more.

This book has information that every dog owner should have ... even if you don't live in the city! If your looking for your first dog training book or looking to add to your collection, I highly recommend picking this one up.

4 out of 5 stars Great even in not-quite urban areas.......2001-03-15

In less than a week we've already trained our 3-1/2 month old puppy to sit, stand, lay down, go to the door... using the methods in this book. They're very straightforward and Frankel has a great attitude about training dogs that is persistent throughout the book. The techniques that are said to pertain specifically to city life are excellent- even if you don't live in a super urban area- because they help you teach your dog how to deal with traffic, strangers, following you up or down stairs, and other scenarios that can happen everywhere.

My only critique is that the housebreaking section is a little weak, and I would have liked to see more information about the dog's psychology. But, overall- we're learning a lot from Frankel and on our way to a very well behaved dog.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for urban owners.......2007-04-13

I believe the author hit a need that has been overlooked in many other books. Not everyone has the fields and equipment readily available to teach their dog how to flush and retreive like the pros do it. He also makes an excellent point that many gun dogs live in urban homes and must have the training needed to meet people politely and walk well on a leash, not just hunt birds. He does a good step-by-step instructions with tips for finding ways to expose your dog to the sounds and enviroment of hunting in an urban setting. I've used several of his ideas with my Springer Spaniel and she has responded extremely well.

5 out of 5 stars Great place to start training your puppy........2007-02-15

I am 21 and have been hunting since early in life. I finally have the space and got my first hunting dog, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. I have had other dogs, and have been successful in basic obedience, but wanted a book to help me along with training this pup. I am wanting to train him as a flushing dog for pheasant season and a basic retriever for dove season. Chester is now 11 weeks, and even though it is too early to tell what type of dog he will be, this book has given me confidence in what I am doing for his training at this early age. He is doing great in my eyes, and we are making great progress in early stages of obedience training. This book takes you from basic obedience, to basic bird dog training, on to more advanced training to polish your dog into whatever you want him to be. I enjoyed reading the book, and am looking forward to running more of the drills as Chester gets older. Its great to read a book that doesn't assume that we all have birds to use, and acres and acres of fields to go to whenever we want. We live in a small town, and I was raised in the country so its not like I can't go home on weekends to train, but the simple and quick drills that this book describes that you can do at home make complete sense to me, and I have confidence that Chester will benefit greatly from them if I do my part. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a good bird dog, and loving companion.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, a must read for spaniel lovers.......2007-02-15

Tony and Chip have taken the time to de-mistify the training experience for the avarage hunter and flushing dog lover. From the obediance basics through steadying, retrieving, blinds, gone-aways and the always difficult "back" command, the material is loaded with fabulous tips to make you successful. The technique to "not looking the dogs in the eyes when delivering to hand" was worth the price of the book by itself. Working on steadying the dog by throwing the dummy over your shoulder is another example of professional technique spelled out for home trainers. Lastly, when to get professional help and how to avoid the e-collar craze are excellent common sense sections of this fine book. You may not train a field trial champion, but the potential is here to produce a master hunter.

5 out of 5 stars Urban Gun Dogs - A hunters review.......2006-01-04

Urban Gun Dogs fills a niche that is long overdue in the hunting dog training literature genre, how to train a working gun dog with limitations imposed by residing in an urban/suburban environment. The authors have done a thorough and insightful job of provding practical advice and training drills to develop a well behaved and effective hunting companion considering the urban environment many people have to train their dogs in. The obedience section alone is worth the price of the book, and applicable to anyone starting a new dog or wishing to improve the manners of their existing dog, not just those in the hunting dog community. The book leaves behind the assumptions made in much of the classic literature on gun dog training.... that people have Edwardian era unlimited time, property and birds to train a gun dog. The program outined in this book will produce results!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for both spaniel and retriever owners.......2005-11-20

This book was an excellent "start to finish" guide for training a retriever or spaniel as a hunting companion or to perform in field events, at least through the intermediate levels. I particularly liked the underlying grasp of the temperament and learning style of the "soft dog." This made the book very suitable for owners of IWS and poodles as well as of the flushing spaniel breeds. I just wish we had had the book a long time ago!!

          Product Description

Legendary guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Hubert Sumlin, T-Bone Walker, Johnnie Winter, Albert King, Freddie King, and Chuck Berry are known to all blues fans for their remarkable soloing abilities. But the complete blues guitarist must do more than shine in the solo spotlight. And that is why every great soloist is also a great fill-in player. Tasteful fill-in licks support and inspire the singer while adding fire and drive to the performance. For example, Blind Lemon Jeffersons string-snapping fill-ins provided the perfect complement for his rough-hewn blues songs. Both Louis Armstrong and Lester Young seemed to talk to the singer with their finely-crafted, jazzy fill-ins. And Henry Sunflower Vestines stinging, buzzsaw fill-ins never failed to drive his Canned Heat bandmates into a psychedelic frenzy. This book is accompanied by a user-friendly split-track CD allows you to sit in with a professional blues band while you learn to play blues fills behind a great singer, Charles Adkins. The Heat-Seeking Missile Blues Band is heard on the left channel; the fill-in licks are isolated on the right channel. This is not just another book of abstract how do I use these licks in real life? licks, but a collection of solid musical ideas that can be applied to thousands of real songs. Another fine contribution from Red Dog Music Books, designed for the early intermediate-to intermediate guitarist. Some of the licks are accessible to highly motivated near-beginners, and the book is an excellent resource for teachers.

              Product Description

This superb Red Dog Music Book and CD allows you to learn/play slide guitar fill-ins while sitting in with a crisply recorded blues band and singer. The licks are clearly written in standard notation and tablature, and the companion CD contains all 101 licks, which are applicable to countless blues songs. A guide to symbols and several helpful fretboard diagrams are included. The licks are recorded on electric guitar but can also be played on acoustic. Overall, a very fine book that will provide unlimited learning and enjoyment. Many slide guitar books are confusing because they try to cover too many tunings. Everything here is in open E. Songs include standards such as Joe Turner Blues, St. Louis Blues, Sportin Life Blues, House of the Rising Sun, Midnight Special, along with several new songs written to standard blues changes. Like Hound Dog Taylor, J.B. Hutton, and Elmore James? Then you will like this book.
