5 out of 5 stars Excellent book if you want to know it all!.......2007-10-08

Packed full of easy to understand information. Not only does it answer all of your questions for animal care but lots of it pertains to humans as well! I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars A great book for pet owners.......2007-10-05

This is a very useful book for dog owners, especially people who have never had pets before. The doctor offers many suggestions for natural remedies for health problems with your pet.

4 out of 5 stars Medicinal Use.......2007-09-13

I found this book very informative and useful when searching for holistic ingredients and supplements for my dog who has Addison's Disease. There are not many books out there that are user friendly with this disease, but this book made it very simple with highlighted notes and page reference numbers for other suggestions. I really liked the fact that this book had a list and explanation of all ingredients found in typical dog food products. The herbal remedies where a wonderful addition to my research and the book gave me definitions to all the products that were mentioned. Great book overall, and I would recommend it to anyone that is searching for holistic remedies for their pets or just for herbal and product information.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of information.......2007-06-27

First I would like to say I have never met Dr. Shawn and am writing
this because I am so pleased with his book. With the recent food scare
I was looking for a reliable source for a homemade food recipe. I live
in Dallas which is near where Dr. Shawn practices. He has written
articles for The Dallas Morning News and I've heard people speak
favorably of him on more than one occasion. I'm new to holistic care
and was a bit skeptical thinking I would be admonished for using
conventional medical care and products. This has not the case with his
book at all. Much of the information is just that, information for you
to make better choices for your pet. It is very well written and packed
with good information on supplements, herb, diet etc. I love this book
and have even learned that there are probably some supplements that I
could add to my diet. I would encourage everyone to buy this book as
it is so easy to read, well formatted, and full of information that
will help me give my dog the healthcare he deserves.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best resources.......2007-06-17

This book is really useful for learning the uses and effects of different herbs and supplements. One of the best things about this book is how it's organized. One section lists ailments, each one with a description, treatment options, and listing of natural remedies. A second section lists all the natural remedies, what they can be used to treat, and how they work. I didn't find the nutrition section very useful, but I would definitely recommend the book for it's extensive ailment and remedy listings.

5 out of 5 stars One for your permanent library.......2007-04-29

A beautiful and engaging story, this memoir deals with coming of age, learning to accept and give love, coming to terms with parents, and death and dying. Geneen Roth masterfully writes about many of life's large universal themes and puts them together expertly into a cohesive whole. This story will stick with you. This book is one of those rare gems to keep in your permanent library, one that will surely unfold a different lesson and mystery each time you read it.

5 out of 5 stars Worth re-reading over and over!.......2006-08-04

I love this book and I often re-read it. Funny and clever writing. Easy to relate to and written with heart!

5 out of 5 stars Hope for those who have suffered a loss.......2006-07-12

Parents, like all humans, are imperfect. When they die, we sometimes recall events, actions, and issues that make us question why we may have ever thought they loved us. Pets, on the other hand, come with no strings attached. They love unconditionally and are a source of joy that is boundless. Geneen covers losing both in the funny and touching book, which may offer healing and hope for those who have lost either.

1 out of 5 stars Narcissistic woman, narcissistic family, but the cat is nice........2006-06-10

I was extremely disappointed with this book. It has a great title and the concept of someone who loved neither cats nor herself learning to live with both interested me.
Lo and behold, Geneen Roth spends less than a page describing her antipathy to cats. She gets Blanche, suddenly he's ten years old, and there's no description of how she came to accept something she formerly disliked.
Her description of herself as an overweight, selfhating shopaholic (there are many, many mentions of earrings) is followed by a description of her immediate marriage to an apparent saint. Ms. Roth spends most of the book describing how successful, rich, and spoiled she is--how many people get Zen masters and acupuncture treatments for their cats?--but the greater part is spent on describing her neuroses and her father, pretty much in that order.
Ms. Roth is apparently stung that her father left his money to his wife rather than to her and her brother. If she truly loved her father she'd not have expected anything; after all, his medical treatments were 'only' half a million dollars. His wife is described as working as a secretary. Why does a millionaire's wife work? Possibly because she needs to for financial or personal reasons? In any case, Daddy's money was his, not hers, and he probably felt that Ms. Roth had enough on her own, while the wife needed it more.
This is a self serving tale of a very privileged woman who likes to write about herself. I would have appreciated hearing more about the cat.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and tearjerking read.......2006-05-14

This book was absolutley wonderful! It pulls at your heart and really makes you think. I recommend it to everyone. Geneen has a great way with words. I have enjoyed some of her other books as well such as Appetites and When You Eat at the Refrigerator Pull Up a Chair.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-02-03

My daughter and I just read this book last week. It is a great book and I'm glad to have it in our library! :)

5 out of 5 stars Cool subject matter!.......2003-12-02

I bought this book for my daughter and she loved it! And I found an adult companion book on Amazon: "Chats de Venise" by Robert de Laroche, that I loved, but it turned out to be handy with her, because I could show her the pictures of the real cats in Venice, like Papa Piccolo and his "found" kittens!!

5 out of 5 stars Rich in learning possibilities.......2000-04-05

The illustrations are very eye catching for young children. My5 yo child enjoyed learning about Italy. She was interested to learnmore about why a city would have streets of water. This book was a huge hit. We must have read this book at least six times the first week after getting it.

This book is a great springboard to learning possibilities such as cats, adoption, fatherhood, gondolas (boats), and Italy. The inside front cover has information to inhance the understanding of the book. Information given on Marco Polo, Venice, Italian words and phrases, and more.

I'm glad to have this book as part of our home library.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars wonderful stories.......2007-06-23

My 10 year-old son tried reading it,and thought the stories were too sad, but I adore this book. Very sweet, humbling stories about good people and good animals.

3 out of 5 stars The Healing Kind of Savior, Cat-like........2006-06-11

In this volume, Mr. Canfield and crew have compiled a smorgasboard selection of short stories about pets who fortify us and make life bearable. Especially poignant to me was "the medicine cat" as I, too, had one named Tosca. She gave up the ghost a few months ago at the age of eighteen years, as I had no way to get to her when she needed support of the kind she gave to me several years ago. They recognize the special love and devotion of animals to bless our hearts and homes.

"Cat lovers will tell you that felines are 'poetry in motion,' living sculptures at rest, and that the warm weight of a purring cat...is a surefire cure for all that ails you."

It is the physical acts of love to bring the gift of life as expressed in "The Healing Touch." I cried as I read "The Language of the Heart" about an unusual rabbit and his healing the hurt of a little girl who'd turned inward and no longer could talk. Something had died in that child which this loving rabbit cured. His innocence and trust had rekindled the same qualities in the child. The loving presence of an animal can heal where words have no effect. Alas, Roger Rabbit bit the tip off my little finger one day, which led me to the ER for a Saran-wrap bandage (to stop the bleeding -- a bandaid wouldn't work) and a tetanus shot. Needless to say, I found him another home.

"A small gesture -- the insistent tap of a cat's paw" about Jack, an adopted stray kitten (like Dante in Troy, Alabama), who grew into Ellen's savior. He woke her from a daydream of tragedy; Star woke me up with that same gesture over and over so that I would not strangle from Acid Reflux. Pets do love and care for their owners. This volume is one I will treasure for years to come. It is full of memories about pet owners' animals, not just cats and dogs.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-03-10

I really enjoyed this book. The main reason I liked it is because it is all about cats and dogs, and I am a hardcore animal lover. Another reason I liked it is because the stories are not made up in someone's mind. These stories are real stories that real people lived through. The last reason I liked this book so much is because you don't have to read it like an ordinary book. You can read it like I did and just jump around to stories that sound good to you, instead of reading the book cover to cover.

Even if you aren't a big reader of the "Chicken Soup" series, you will still like this book. The stories are great and you can just pick the book up anytime and pretty much read a section at random. Fun to keep on the coffee table, or as a gift book for animal lovers.

Book Description

In this special Passover story, Larnel Moore, a young African-American boy, and Mrs. Katz, an elderly Jewish woman, develop an unusual friendship through their mutual concern for an abandoned cat named Tush. Together they explore the common themes of suffering and triumph in each of their cultures.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars univeral themes.......2007-03-22

What a beautiful story to show children that, despite our differences, i.e. age, race, family background, we still have some many important things in common. Characters have wit, charm and integrity. Story is very moving and good for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Katz and Tush.......2006-07-28

This is one of the best children's books I have ever read. In fact, it is one of the most beautiful (in language and illustrations) books I have read--period. Patricia Polacco is a master at bringing diverse, meaningful relationships to life. Every sensitive, mature parent should buy this book for his/her child!

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful story, even if the illos have some bloopers..........2004-03-30

This is the story of a loving friendship between an elderly Jewish lady from Poland named Mrs. Katz, and an African-American child named Larnel. Mrs. Katz lives alone in her apartment and doesn't have anyone to visit her. (It's not stated in the book, but, since this appears to be a predominantly African-American inner city neighborhood, one wonders if she was left behind by the Jewish community when the more affluent members moved to the suburbs? In real life it has happened...) Larnel's mother stops by to visit her every other day or so, and brings Larnel with her.

One day, Larnel gets the idea to give Mrs. Katz a kitten from the litter that was born in the basement of his apartment building. (Get the pun -- Katz/cats? Actually, the name "Katz" has nothing to do with "cats," but it's cute anyway.) Mrs. Katz names the kitten Tush, which is Yiddish for "bottom," because it has no tail. Larnel agrees to help her care for Tush, and from this sharing, a lifelong friendship grows.

The story is well-written, the characters are well-developed and "real." The illustrations are vibrant, beautifully done, and ethnically accurate. Well, almost. There are a couple Jewish bloopers. For one thing, the menorah sitting by Mrs. Katz's window only has seven branches. A Hanukkah menorah has nine -- eight for the eight days plus an extra for the "servant" candle. The seven-branched menorah mentioned in the Bible was specifically for the Jerusalem Temple, and is not usually found in the home. Since Hanukkah was mentioned in the story, I have to assume that this was supposed to be a Hanukkah menorah.

The second blooper is the scene in the bakery. Mrs. Katz is shopping for PASSOVER -- a time when no leaven is to be found anywhere in a Jewish home. It is not just a matter of eating matzoh. The entire house is cleaned of anything even resembling leaven, and even owning leavened products is forbidden. That being the case, why is she shopping for her Passover feast in a bakery, of all places? She is clearly pointing at a cake or some rolls, and these would NOT be served on Passover! So nu, maybe she's a Reform Jew and not so strict? But in that case, why is that very Hasidic-looking gentleman in the corner shopping there? Surely HE would not serve bread for Passover! (...)

These are relatively minor quibbles, given the overall good quality of the book. But when it comes to children's books, I insist on total accuracy with regard to Judaism, because these are the images that will stick in the mind for years to come. Granted, this is not a "Jewish" book per se, it's a multicultural book -- which is all the more reason to pay more attention to the Jewish details, lest the reader(s) be misled. For the bloopers I'm docking it a star, but it's still a great story and I highly recommend it to both Jews and gentiles.

5 out of 5 stars Diversity in its finest.......2003-03-06

Ms. Katz and Tush is an excellent choice for educators and parents to use when explaining diversity.
In the book, a young boy is introduced to an elderly jewish woman through his mother. The boy develops a bond with the elderly lady, and the two are friends forever.
This book enables children to develop an understanding about life in different cultures. It shows them that different is good and you can learn a lot from someone of a different culture.

5 out of 5 stars How to be a mensch.......2002-07-03

I have read this schmaltzy tale of friendship bridging two cultures dozens of times. Not once have I finished it with dry eyes. This is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Mrs. Katz, a widowed old woman befriended Larnel Moore, a young boy. She gifted him with Yiddishisms-and good cooking. "Kugel! Such a kugel I baked for you today." She also gave a heart as warm as the sweater she knitted for him.

In turn, Larnel also performed many mitzvot (good deeds). Mrs. Katz needed a friend. He became that friend. He gave her a cat, too, for when he couldn't be there. Mrs. Katz took the kitty, who reminded her of her Myron, who was ugly as a child, too, "but such a person!" She named the kitty Tush, Yiddish for `behind,' because she had no tail. When the cat escaped through an open window, Larnel did everything to find her. His everything included prayers.

Larnel became a grandchild to Mrs. Katz, and she his grandmother. Everything else is commentary.

Each child enriched by this joyous tale of sharing and kindness will come that much closer to being a mensch (a good person). Such a person! Alyssa A. Lappen

JADE...Escaping the madness of a hateful courtroom battle, she was lured into an ordeal too traumatic to forget -- and much too terrible to share.

CAT...Like the other girls, Cat has a story of her own. But maybe she should lie -- just make something up. Because the truth is more horrifying than the others could possibly imagine....

3 out of 5 stars Orphans with parents.......2007-07-16

The wildflowers follows 4 teenage girls who reveal a secret during a therapy session. Each secret becomes darker as the book progresses as each girl reveals how they have been betryed by their parents.

As a reader I was left thinking that Cat (the last girl to reveal her secret) has not only been betrayed by her parents but also by the councillor Dr Marlow, who has encouraged her to reveal a devastating secret to 3 other girls who have not experienced anything quite as bad as poor Cat.
It appears that Cat has been taken advantage of again, this time by Dr Marlow, who has used Cat as the ultimate "Well you think you got it bad?..." example that makes the other girls problems seem petty and insignificant.
Well, at least she seems to have made some friends out of it, but to this reader it did not seem credible that this girl would reveal such a secret to strangers unless they had shared stories more similar to her own. And shouldn't have Dr Marlow put Cat in a therapy session with others who could be more empathetic to her circumstances?
Ok, not great

Misty
A Review of the Book by V.C. Andrews
Laura Young

Misty, by V.C. Andrews, is about a young girl who is going to therapy to help ease the sting of her parents' divorce. Her therapist, Doctor Marlowe, suggests having a group therapy session with three other patients of hers. Misty reluctantly goes first and tells the small group of girls her life story. As she learns to open up to the girls and Dr. Marlowe, she learns the meaning of trust and emotion.
The reason I decided to read this book is because I read an excerpt on the author's website. I thought it sounded interesting and borrowed the book from the library, not fully knowing what to expect.
I believe teenage girls who have had emotional problems in their past could relate to Misty's struggles to find who she is. I know I understood a few of her problems. I know that I have been asked to take sides in fights before in my family, so I could kind of understand her emotions. She was confused with her life and I am too sometimes.
Misty was sounded like a normal teenager, which was good because the character came from a rich family and went to a fancier school than most, causing her to be a little smarter than a couple of the girls in the therapy circle. She relaxed a little bit once she started her story. I thought her character was going to be unlikable because she was a little snobby in the beginning of the book, but once she warmed up to the other girls she seemed less high maintenance than they thought she was.
The setting was beautifully described. It takes place at Dr. Marlowe's Beverly Hills home. It was described as a spacious home with a large office where the therapy group is in session. It sounded almost like a Barbie dream house, except better.
The main weakness of this story was that Misty would sometimes go into too much detail about one of her past relationships with a boy. It seemed unnecessary to her telling about her parents' divorce. I understand how it was related, I just did not think it was necessary.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It felt relatable at points and real. It was a mystery of sorts, with Misty trying to figure out why she feels this way. I loved how it portrayed a young girl trying to find herself. There are too many stories out there about guys trying to find out who they are. It gets a little frustrating,
I recommend this book to anyone who likes stories where people tell each other how they really feel. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars great novel.......2006-07-04

this book actually combines each book into one. All four girls meet at Therapy and then have to tell their lives to eachother. From one girl after another, I was amazed to see the story that layed behind each one. Out of all the girls, i consider Cat's to be the most entertaining.
Star's boyfriend got killed, Misty feels like no one loves her, Jade is considered to be spoiled and can have no feelings at all. But, really does. And Cat barely talks. It's a very good book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-03-23

This a good book and i read all the way threw. But this is not a as good as the Flower in the Attic books. Also, you should know that v.c. Andrews did not right this is what a ghostwriter who did but this writer does a good job coping her wierd storys.

4 out of 5 stars A great book.......2004-03-23

This book was very interesting because, it was a really misterious kind of book. These book was a little confusing because it would talk about the old man who was one of the charecters. Then it will talk about hes paintings. But this book at last was kind of misterious when the old men dies. He dies when he paints hes last painting.

5 out of 5 stars Such a fun book!.......2007-03-13

I have to admit that I had as much fun as my daughter did flipping through this book. The story is cute and engaging, and the touch and feel features are wonderful. A winner in our opinion.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original.......2005-07-17

My 12 month old daughter loved "Pat the Bunny" so I was excited to get this book for her, but it's not as good as the original. There is too much text in this one... it doesn't hold her interest as much and the activites inside the book are more difficult and not as toddler-friendly. She started destroying the book's activities in a day or two. Maybe for older kids it's better, but whereas the original book was fine for her level, this was a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars My little one loves it.......2001-05-17

Okay, *I* may think it's boring and *you* may think it's boring, but my child ... loves this little book. It is frequently the one he chooses to have read to him, perhaps because each page is interactive.

One, of course, must pat the cat. Then you can extract money from the ATM and later put it into daddy's wallet. You can imitate mommy making a list, scratch and sniff the gingersnaps, help Neddy and Martha see-saw and play peek-a-boo, and squeeze the little bear before going to bed.

It is a fun, quiet little book that your child will enjoy. And you will too -- not because it's exciting, but because the time you and your child spend looking through it will be happy and peaceful.

5 out of 5 stars This is my toddler's favorite book........1999-09-11

At first glance, you may not be impressed because the illustrations are a little dated. However, it is a great interactive book for toddlers. My daughter loves this book (and that's what it's all about). We also have Pat the Bunny. I'm buying Pat the Puppy tonight.

Book Description

Charlie, a fuzzy gray cat, walked out of the woods one evening and into Elizabeth's and Sarah's hearts. Now he sleeps on their beds, lets them dress him up in doll clothes, and laps up warm milk on chilly nights. But where does Charlie go during the day?

It's not until a storm keeps Charlie away one night that the two sisters discover his other, daytime, home. But maybe that's not such a bad thing. Because, just like Elizabeth and Sarah, Charlie has two houses, two beds, and two families who love him very, very much!

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Anderson.......2007-09-22

This book was recommended to me by a teacher friend. I like this story to teach predictions while teaching comprehension strategies.

1 out of 5 stars Charlie Anderson.......2006-12-14

Although the story should be a great read for children having difficulties with split families. The page where Elizabeth ask "Who do you love the best," could plant in a childs mind that one must make a choice as to which parent do you love the best, or even cause the child to wonder if he/she is loved the "best". The book would have been excellent had it not been for this one page. I suggest it be re-written.

5 out of 5 stars Children of Divorce learn there are others like them.......2006-09-09

Having to trudge back and forth between parents into different worlds can be very upsetting to a child of a divorce. The transition is emotionally charged and sometimes bringing the child to depression - especially if the child cannot identify their life with any other children. The mix of personalities and a happy life that Charlie Anderson leads transitioning between two families is something any young child can identify with and derive comfort from. I know my child did.

5 out of 5 stars no analysis, just cute.......2006-03-16

I have not analyzed this book that deeply. I heard about this cute book and just happen to have a cat named Charlie that we suspected also lived "somewhere else" sometimes. I put a piece a tape on him that read "my name is Charlie and I belong to ....." It seems to have worked! He has returned full-time. Kind of funny.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book For Children of Divorce .......2005-09-23

This book helps its' readers understand that divorce does not mean that there cannot be happiness. Charlie, the cat, has two homes and in each one he receives love and all of his needs are met. The book appears to be designed to help the child reader adjust to divorce and the new accomodations of the parents. The book is a very nice story that sends its message without using the negative connotations that usually come with divorce.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2006-06-11

I read this book for a book report in 5th grade. I enjoyed as much as I enjoyed Ginger Pye. It was very entertaining. I think this book is mainly for grades 3-7 because its big and has some big words too. Loved this book overall

5 out of 5 stars The Cat Has It!.......2006-02-20

Pinky Pye is yet another well written book by Elenor Estes. As appealing as both the Moffats series and the infamous Ginger Pye. This title is an excellent choice for both the traditional and creative book report formats for readers of 4th through 6th grades. If you love animals, and a solid story line of sibling relationship, this book is for you! Besides, where else could you read about a typewriting cat!

4 out of 5 stars Pinky Pye.......2005-11-16

Pinky Pye is a charming book about a little black cat. Pinky Pye is about the Pye family and they go to Fire Island. Mr. Pye goes to look for birds and brings the family. At there cottage they find a cat in a crabnet, there was a sign on her that said "ABANDID". It said her name was Pinky too. The Pyes decided to keep her. One day she started type writing. They started calling her the type writing cat. They found an owl in the eaves and gave it to Mr. Bish, his owner. You should read this book to find out the ending. I think this is a book for all ages.

3 out of 5 stars A smart cat named Pink Pye.......2003-03-17

Pinky Pye is a cute, funny ,exciting, and questioning kind of book.My favorite part is when the Pyes find Pinky. Then find out that Pinky can type on Mr.Pyes type writer.I really liked

5 out of 5 stars Pinky Pye.......2003-03-11

This story is about the Pyes (Rachael, her brother Jerry, Mama, Papa, Gracie, Uncle Benny, and Ginger) who go on vacation so Papa ,a famous ornithologist, can figure out what a puffin is doing there. His bad memory gets him in a lot of trouble very early on in the book. Little did he know he wouldn't get much work done due to an abandoned kitten left on their cabin's door step. Pinkey Pye they called her, who would do anything just so someone will say she's cute. Mama brought plenty of coats (even though it was 90 degrees outside) just in case they were walking along the beach and a snow storm arived and matches in case they got lost. Her motto is "Be Prepared." Uncle Benny is Mama's brother even though he is 5 years younger than Rachael and Jerry(Mama's children). He wonders how his crickets are vanishing one by one. He is on a never ending quest to stop sucking his thumb. Gracie is a grumpy old cat who feins boredom through out although she is very interested in a creature lurking in the shadows of the attic... Ginger is the clever dog, but feels a little left out when Pinky steps into the picture. Will her jelousy overcome her common sense? Filled with laughs. Some of the suspence in this book will keep you laughing and crying over their detailed antics. I recommend reading Ginger Pye before this one though. All in All a good book.

    Book Description

Christine Montaquila and Kim Levin's feline role models are back—and hitting a new milestone in their nine lives. In Cattitude, Montaquila and Levin's first cat-inspired book, their feline divas gave us girls the skinny on how to live large. In Catrimony, they continued their pseudo advice column with the 411 on relationships and marriage. And now, with Caternal Instincts, these savvy cats give us a few tips for raising our young with confidence, reinforcing the old bit of wisdom, “If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.”

Like the rest of the series, Caternal Instincts combines Levin's unique documentary-style photography with Montaquila's witty all-feline perspective. Their collection of newly minted momcats offer up practical life lessons for anyone who is, or is soon to be, a mother. Little wisdoms like “Buy stain-resistant everything,” “Realize snacks can work like sedatives,” and “Accept the fact that you'll never pee alone again” make this book an ideal addition to any cat lover's library. Caternal Instincts is a perfect gift for Mother's Day or baby showers, or for anyone who simply loves to get their favorite four-legged friends' perspective on life.
