The signals are interesting and the pictures illustrate the behaviors well, but the book as a whole is poorly organized and provides very little context. The sections just seem to bump into one another. Almost all of the signals are described as having the same effect or purpose. To be fair I suppose that's the point of the book: calming. But really that's just too thin a topic without going into more detail on each behavior. There must be some difference between licking and curving, for example. What is it? I believe she also claims there are 30 signals, but only discusses about 13.

Interesting but useless, from a practical sense.......2007-09-20

Interesting to understand dog behavior BUT she doesn't explain how to apply it to teaching your dog, she only explains how to watch for signs that you are overwhelming your dog. My dog ignores my yawning, licking, blinking and looking to the side. I guess if a strange dog attacks me I know to sit down with my back to it (yeah, sure). I'd love to attend her classes but this book is NOT worth owning. Borrow it and read it.

I have a couple of unusual dogs-one horrifically abused and the other feral. The clear photos and simple text made reading their "dog language" very easy. I've had dogs all my life and I learned a lot from this little book.

A tiny book and you may feel disappointed over the cost for that volume. I don't believe that the purpose of the book was truly reached because it wasn't explained from the start. It meanders over the different physical cues that dogs use with each other in order to calm other dogs. It suggests if you watch for these cues and perhaps mimic them that you too will be able to communicate the need for a calm behavior from the dog. I suppose if someone were completely new to observing animals and humans that this could be considered inspirational. But I don't find that many people who are so inclined to learn more about communication between species will be greatly rewarded.

My daughters often read the four books from the Enchanted Forest series by Patricia C. Wrede. They came across the books a couple years back. They seem to check out the books and audio tapes every couple months. Over the last year I have listened to bits and pieces of the series.

Talking to Dragons is was the first book published, but it is really the fourth in the series. The hero of the story is a 16 year old boy by the name of Daystar. For the first 16 years of his life he lived on the edge of the Enchanted Forest with his mother. Then one day his mother gives him a sword and sends him out into Enchanted Forest. His mother tells him he has a mission, but won't tell him what the mission is.

Fairly quickly Daystar bumps into a fire-witch. They are both in trouble with wizards, and decide to stick together. Daystar was taught to always be polite to dragons. They come across a young dragon. Daystar is very polite and the dragon joins the group. Near the end of the book Daystar finally figures out his mission and helps save the day.

This is a fun book. It moves along well. I stayed up till midnight to finish it. If your children like fantasy, you might have them try this book.

Talking to Dragons is a great book about kings, princes, princesses, dragons, and wizards by Patricia C. Wrede. It takes place in Enchanted Forest. The narrator of the book is the main character, Daystar.
One day Daystar's mom tells him to go on a quest that he knows nothing about. He started out on a quest and meets new creatures and people, some of them become his companions and some his enemies.
His companions, a young fire witch named Shiara and a young dragon, become really good friends with him. They help him on his quest. After a while he started to figure out that the sword his mom gave him was important because everybody wanted it. People called it "The Sword of the Sleeping King." All he knew is that he needed to go through a cave to be where he was supposed to.
At the end he found the Sleeping King and everybody was reunited. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and also a happy ending. I recommend reading the first three books Dealing With Dragons, Searching For Dragons and Calling for Dragons.

All the Enchanted Forest Chronicles are so much fun! Definitely at my top of Harry Potter fan recommendations. They're just such an amusing read; I even teach with them. Don't forget to read "The Frying Pan of Doom."

Written first, this is actually the final book in the series (so far, at least). This story features the son of Mendanbar and Cimorene: Daystar. Daystar has been reared on the edge of the Enchanted Forest without any knowledge of who he is or how he and his mother came to be there. Shortly after a wizard appears on their doorstep, he watches his mother melt the wizard and he is sent on his way into the Enchanted Forest with a sword and instructions from his mother to always be polite, especially to dragons, and NEVER agree to a favor until you know what it is. Almost immediately Daystar gains a companion, Shiara, who happens to be a fire witch. Together they follow the sword wherever it leads them, which brings us back to some familiar characters. In the end Daystar realizes many things, including what he is to do and how he is to do it - but not without a lot of help and teamwork from many friends and companions. This was an interesting finale as it definitely left an opening for novels of the next generation of the Enchanted Forest.

A Truly Enchanting and Wonderful Read........2006-06-20

I stumbled upon this book first - it's the 4th in a series by Wrede. It is really at least as much fun and imaginative as Harry Potter with more logic and a fun side without the dark side. A great read for kids or adults. Truly magical and special.

Great book for dealing with horses from the ground.......2006-04-07

This is the book you need if you have to deal with horses from the ground. There are many riding books, but few on how to get along with them. That's what this is about. Horses are quite willing to communicate with gestures, and this will teach you how to "talk horse".

Not a bad book. He gets the point across about communicating with horses. Mr Blake a great trick of telling funny anecdotes to get his point across. I haven't had enough to do with horses to confirm the ESP thing yet.

It was entertaining as well as informative. As a new horse owner I am glad it was the first book I read on the subject. Effective communication skills is a must wheather you are a first time or long time horse owner. It was very helpful to be educated on the psyche, and language of horses and to be given examples that just like people, horses each have their own individual personalities. Mr. Blake has had experience with a large number of horses over the years and has developed a reputation for his patience and handling of difficult horses....and reading about how much enjoyment he received from it was a real inspiration!

In this book Marta Williams carries forward the concepts described in Learning Their Language. She gives many case histories, examples of how intuitive communication has been critical in the lives of the animals whose cases are described. This is both fascinating and moving. The implications are unnerving, but worth incorporating into your world view.

Probably most folks who will look at this book are already believers in animal communication but even for those like me who are, there is an abundance of profound and amazingly touching anecdotes in it.

My wife and I have called on Marta for help with our cats on several occasions with great success. As a direct result of reading her previous book we can now often communicate directly with them ourselves. This new book is truely a gem and whichever book you read first, you will likely end up wanting to get the other as well! They are easy to read and understand, and make great gifts! Even children who are too young to be able to read on them on their own can learn to communicate with animals; actually learn more easily than adults.

Even if you don't have a live-in companion, animals are all around us and they love it when you make deeper contact with them. If you love animals, this book is a must have!

Author Marti Williams takes us on a wonderful journey as she shares countless stories of animals interacting with humans. In this book she tells of communication between many animals and humans. In these communications the animals; dogs, cats, horses, etc. share their feelings, likes, dislikes, worries and such with the person they are communicating with. Interesting! She also gives accounts where lost pets are found, and emotional problems are solved.
I am an animal lover so this book definitely touched a soft spot in my heart. I am not sure that I fully agree with how she communicates with the animals and nature, but I definitely know that everything living share a common bond. If what she is doing helps even one animal to have a better life, I say Amen and thank you to her! This certainly is a very well written book with some wonderful stories and information that I feel will help and touch many hearts along the way. Animal lovers and pet owners will appreciate this read and find it very beneficial.

Marta shares many interesting stories in this followup to Learning Their Language. Understanding your pet is so important, and the more we can learn about and develop positive interactive communication signals the stronger will be the bond we share with our furry family members. Being "in-touch" with
your pet is an important part of enhancing the human-animal bond, and a critical part of a successful holistic health care program. Those clients whose patients I am proud to treat who are most in-tune with their pets have the greatest successes with both preventing and treating diseases.

A great, straight forward, informative book which encompasses the author's ease in relating his knowledge of working border collies to those who wish to learn.

Easy to understand, yet world-class.......2005-09-13

Derek Scrimgeour is a world-class sheepdog trainer; he has run dogs in the English National, the International, and the World trial, puts on training clinics all over Europe and the United States, and runs a training center in England. His book reflects his experience in its breadth and quality; with a little luck, some sheep, and a good dog, you could take a dog from pup to trial-worthy with only this book. Yet it is also easy to understand. All the terms are simply explained, the training is laid out in simple steps, and tips are made on trouble shooting problems. Beyond that, Scrimgeour's methods are among the gentlest in the Border Collie world, rarely using any punishment other than a 'hard voice'. A must buy for any working Border Collie aficionado, whether complete beginner or established expert.

I first had this book read to me at a public library when I was 4. I never owned it growing up, but I would borrow it and force my parents to read it to me.
I bought this book for my dear friend who is about to give birth as I write this for her little one. I think it is an integral part of the bedtime routine and it can be fun to have your child say goodnight to their room as well.

When the parental units away, the cat will play. Take a kid, and a cat, and a lot of smaller cats, and a bunch of toys, and many snowballs and other devices of childish warfare, and you get a barrel of laughs and entertainment, indeed.

What can I say, it's The Cat in the Hat. You remember this book from your own childhood. Let's face it, it's one you have to own. The rhymes, the fun story, it's Dr. Seuss at his best. My kids will pick this book to read over and over, and over! Even my 19 month-old can get into the Rhyming and playful wording. If you don't already own this, you owe it to yourself and your kids to buy it.

The Id in the Hat, by Ryan Haynie

Dr. Seuss began his book, "The Cat in the Hat", with a vision: to exterminate illiteracy by creating a children's book so amazing that it would convince children everywhere that reading was "cool". If he could encourage young readers to start reading independently in their early years it would have a drastic effect on their overall literacy and desire to continue to enjoy literature later in life. His goal was noble, but he didn't account for the psychoanalytical underpinnings. The Freudian structural model explains that we all have three parts of our personality: the id, the ego and the superego. All children are born with the id: the impulsive, driving desire to feel pleasure. This is juxtaposed with the superego, or the societal morals and norms that limit behavior. The ego is left with the task to satisfy the demands of the other two parties and help keep the individual in a realistic mindset. Freud said that the formative years of a child's life are critical to the development of the ego which would be the motivating force to adopt a not-so-physically-gratifying hobby such as reading. Although Seuss creates a colorful and catchy tome in "The Cat in the Hat", he fails to accomplish his goals with his audience due to a misrepresentation of the Freudian structural model as portrayed through the fish, the Cat, and the children.

The first aspect of Freud's structural model as depicted in "The Cat in the Hat" is the superego, represented through the children's pet fish. The superego is related to one's sense of morality, consisting of his beliefs of acceptable conduct and traits and is often referred to as the conscience. The illustration of the superego through the fish is found on page 11 when the fish responds to the Cat's proposition to lolly-gag the day away in play, saying: "Tell that Cat in the Hat/ You do not want to play./ He should not be here/ He should not be about./ He should not be here when your mother is out!" The fish's disapproval of the carnal desire to "have fun", especially in the absence of parental supervision, is a perfect example of superego influence over the children in the story.

In the next page, Seuss takes the legs out from under his "conscience" by humiliating the fish in the Cat's game, "up, up, up with a fish". As the Cat lifts the fish into the air against his wishes, the fish and, subsequently, his will are disregarded. Although this representation of conflict between id and superego does follow Freud's pattern, the undertone communicated to the audience is that the superego is foolish and "wussy" compared to the impulsive id.

The irony of Seuss' dilemma is apparent: he must encourage small children to develop the habit of reading against their dominating id. In Freud's structural model, the id is the impulse-driven influence that we are born with. Its inherent characteristics include a desire to satiate one's physical desires; an influence based mainly on pleasure and instant gratification. Since reading offers no immediate pleasurable gains, it can easily be over shadowed by the powerful id in young people and result in pursuit of satisfaction in other venues such as binge eating or, in more extreme cases, delinquency. Seuss therefore has the task of satisfying the id while encouraging the ego to overcome any residual cravings.

In the case of the "Cat in the Hat", the Cat would personify (or, rather, in-feline-ify) the id: bent on having "fun" no matter the circumstances. This is apparent on page 7, where he states "I know it is wet/ And the sun is not sunny./ But we can have/ Lots of good fun that is funny!" This shows the impulsive desire for "fun" despite the sodden roadblock of a rainy day. The problem with the representation made by Seuss comes in the resolution of the conflict. As the house has been devastated by the gallivanting of the Cat, the children face the dilemma of social conflict in the form of parental discipline for having let id-dominated impulses overcome superego guidelines. Seuss overcomes this obstacle in an irrational, id-driven, fanciful, manner: through what I like to call the "Cat-in-the-Hat-traption". Riding a mysterious janitorial golf cart, the Cat in the Hat instantaneously amends the problem by magically eliminating the mess. This solution lends to the reader's mind a painless solution, or, in other words, a lack of consequences for the indulgence in id-inspired desires. Without the consequences to aid in the development of the ego, children will undoubtedly opt for the paths of least resistance in acquiring their personal pleasures, such as theft or murder, without a concrete understanding of the relationship between real-life "choice and consequence" scenarios. Seuss' solution to the problem completely destroys the Freudian model of an ego that successfully satisfies both id and superego in order to develop personality traits such as a love for reading.

The children's lack of action in "The Cat in the Hat" also misrepresents the function of the Freudian structural model. Seuss presents the children, Sally and the narrator, "I", at the beginning of the book as the main characters with a dilemma of childhood, rainy-day lethargy. As they are placed in the middle of an external struggle, Seuss successfully represents the plight of the ego through them. The ego is the reality-driven aspect of personality, burdened with the task of satisfying the demands of both id and superego while finding plausible, real-life solutions to problems. Seuss, however, gives the impression that the children are afflicted with indecisiveness. This implies to his audience of little people that personality development is hard. This is demonstrated through the lack of action of the children throughout the great majority of the book. They are portrayed as passive observers of the conflict between Cat and fish the first 82% of this book, and ultimately take no action when interrogated by their authority figure as to their most recent dealings. On the final page, we see further encouragement for the same type of apathy in the questions posed by the narrator: "Should we tell her about it?/ Now, what should we do?/ Well.../ What would you do/ If your mother asked you?" This message communicates to the audience a weak ego. With a weak ego, the entire structural model is thrown out of balance, rendering impossible the healthy development of a realistic personality. As the audience is made up of almost entirely ego-developing youngsters, this puts subconscious blocks on their normal development of personality and would encourage them to embrace drugs, sex, money, and foods high in trans fat instead of taking up reading as a healthy past-time

When Dr. Seuss embarked on his literacy-promoting campaign, he was faced by the daunting task of encouraging id-driven little ones to embrace a not-so-satisfying use of time. His attempt at inspiring the young tots to live a life in literature is noble, but poorly executed. Sure, he's sold millions of copies and entertained youthful readers for generations, but parents: beware! Though Seuss attempts to encourage little readers through a simple and colorful rhyme of a lid-donning feline, the subconscious psychological underpinnings might very well have the reverse effect on his audience for a lifetime.

This is a timeless classic. It was both my daughters' favorite book and I couldn't wait to get a copy for my new baby boy. There's just something about the rhyming words that holds their attention. You can't go wrong with this book.

I warn you...this book will make you cry, but you will laugh, too. I am proud to be owned by a parrot, and Patty's story of her own parrot, Pop, was amazing. Patty's spirituality really comes forth in her writing. She is right on when she says that humans have decided to step away from "mother earth's table" and take and take while giving nothing in return. A thought-provoking yet comforting read.

I first read Bernard Waber's The House on East 88th Street as a child and was capitivated by Lyle the Crocodile. How I loved this story about a bright green crocodile living in a bathtub in a New York City brownstone.Though frightened at first, the Primm family is won over by their housemate. Lyle is amazing, he takes out the trash, brings in the milk, (this book was first published in 1962!)helps around the house, and loves a nice, hot bath complete with Turkish caviar! (We could all use a Lyle) The story of Lyle does not end here; Waber went on to write seven more titles about this lovable creature. Out of all the Lyle books, this is his best-known. This charming children's classic is suitable for small children between the ages of four and eight.

I had a copy of this book when I was a child, and it was one of my favorites. It is a delight in every way, from its whimsical illustrations to its gently humorous treatment of a family who just happen to find a crocodile in the bathtub of their new home. I highly recommend this book to any parent with children, or any adults who wish they had children.
