"Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?" Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in this well-loved classic by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.) Children today will be as entranced by these ridiculous rhymes as they have been since the book's original publication in 1960--so amused and enchanted, in fact, they may not even notice they are learning to read! 5 out of 5 stars Another classic Dr Seuss book.......2007-07-20

Although its not as great as The Cat in the Hat, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish is certainly one of my children's favorites, and they especially love trying to read some of the rhymes outloud. Certainly a great choice for a book for your young ones.

5 out of 5 stars These fish become swans.......2007-07-12

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss gives young children an excellent way to start reading independently. The book helps children learn to count to eleven and it increases their vocabulary as you read it along with them the first few times. Young children just learning to read will be able to read this book as one of their first books that they can read by themselves; and the cute illustrations will delight children and even adults everywhere.

The book's plot is not entirely deep--nor should it be for this exceptionally young, tender age group. The book helps kids to learn how to count to eleven and recognize the words for those numbers; it also uses pictures to introduce words for basic colors including red, blue, black, yellow and pink. Children also explore the concepts of old and new; fast and slow; high and low; thin and fat as well as here and there. Excellent! The book also introduces the telephone and how two people can communicate by phone. Your child will love that--they'll think that the phone is a toy!

The book is nicely bound and the strength of the hardcover binding makes the book tolerate the bending and occasional carelessness of a young child who is learning to read partly by using this book. Great!

I highly recommend One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish for younger kids who are just learning to read. This book will increase their vocabulary by introducing words, comparisons and pictures. The child also gets a heightened awareness of the world around them; and the adorable illustrations will delight children everywhere.

Great job, Dr. Seuss!

You will have fun reading this tongue twister with your child. With funny made up animals (things) and verse that can twist the tongue of the most experienced reader.
What is the story about? Nothing really, just a bunch of nonsense that makes Dr. Seuss as fun as ever

Book Description

"Eating the Big Fish is on fire with ideas.
Best in the marketplace." -Steve Hayden, President, Worldwide Brand Services, Ogilvy & Mather
"In 1986, the Levi's® Dockers® brand challenged the biggest fish in the men's apparel sea, Haggar. And we beat the pants off them! In his new book, Adam Morgan adroitly presents many of the same fundamental marketing principles which worked so well for us. A must read for marketing professionals." -Steve Goldstein, V.P. Marketing & Research, Levi's Brand U.S.A.

Years ago, Avis was a little fish in the car rental industry. Fearing the company would be swallowed up if they didn't "try harder," Avis boldly announced its #2 status to the world through advertising-and the rest is history. Why has this approach become a marketing legend? Because there are more people who can relate to being #2, 3, or even 4, than can claim they know what it's like to be the Big Fish.
There are plenty of little fish out there, circling in schools around the brand leaders they so desperately wish to surpass. Squeezed by new competition, a retreating consumer, and aggressive retailing practices, marketers of second- and third-rank brands are struggling to survive in a business environment where they have fewer resources and less control than ever before. But instead of watching-and copying-every move the Big Fish makes, these "Challenger" brands need their own set of marketing rules if they have any hopes of staying afloat and competing effectively against the leader.
Eating the Big Fish is the first book that sets out to define those rules. Adam Morgan offers an innovative mental and strategic framework for those who find themselves in this new, hostile middle ground, looking for aggressive growth against the market leader. Morgan, the Joint European Planning Director of TBWA (the international advertising agency behind the campaigns for such brands as Absolut vodka, Apple computers, and Sony Playstation), has examined in detail forty of the most successful Challenger brands of the last ten years -new or relaunched brands which have achieved rapid growth (and fame) with limited marketing resources. He outlines the reasons why Challengers must think differently in order to survive, offering hands-on advice, plentiful examples, and invaluable information to help a Challenger learn how to swim out of the shadow of the Big Fish.
At the heart of the book are the Eight Credos of Challenger Brands -Morgan's analysis of the common marketing strands that these Challengers seem to share, which range in scope from the need to project who you are and what you believe in (#2, Build a Lighthouse Identity) to insights about the organizational structure and focus in such companies and brands (#8, Become Idea-Centered, Rather Than Consumer-Centered). Morgan fully analyzes each Credo, discussing in detail the marketing strategy and behavior of the specific Challenger brands that have shaped the rules. He provides case studies that include both his agency's clients and other well-known brands, such as Lexus, Oakley, Fox TV, Energizer, Virgin Atlantic, Swatch, Nissan, and more. Morgan then draws the Credos together into a "Challenger Strategic Program" that can be applied to the reader's own market and brand challenge, offering a proposed outline for a two-day Off-Site Program that will attempt to kick-start the Challenger process for a core group within any marketing or management team. In addition, Morgan looks at the great Challengers of the last ten years who have gone on to become brand leaders, and shows how even the rules of brand leadership have changed -why staying #1 now means, in fact, thinking and behaving like a #2.
Anyone can follow a leader. It takes a smart company to go up against the Big Fish, and Morgan's innovative, strategic program will show even the littlest fish how to make a meal out of the competition.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic read.......2006-07-21

This book did great things for my understanding of a challenger brands greatest strengths and strategies. Not to turn this into a forum, I have a few questions though: Does anyone know more about Adam Morgan? Did he work for TBWA? Any other agencies? What was his discipline? Any info would help.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best marketing books available .......2005-08-31

I own (oooooh) probably between 80 and 100 books on marketing, some are obligatory read for my masters in marketing, some are handpicked in stores and on amazon and I stand by the title of my review. What can you take out from this book: YOU CAN compete with big brands, there are attitudes and ways of running your business that can knock down the goliath in your industry, and this book explains how, giving numerous examples from various industries. Only negative, if I can call it that, is author's writing style, which was rather hard for me, but then again, I am croatian, so it could be my english, not mr Morgan's :). A MUST!! have.

5 out of 5 stars Demolish the 3-piece suits that stand in your way.......2005-08-09

I don't know how to explain the insightful ideas I have taken from this book.

I have read tens of books on branding and how to gain a competitive advantage, yet none were as ground breaking as "Eating the Big Fish".

While others will tell you "what" marketing approaches they used...this one explains the "why".

I got my copy almost free using a coupon from UnderTag.com

Author Adam Morgan went hunting for the second most successful brands. He sought commonalities among them to develop guidelines for those who are challenging the number one brands in their fields. In other words, if you are coming into the battle in the number two slot, here's your strategy for winning the marketing wars. Morgan is very adept at breaking things down into precise action steps. Witty and engaging, he offers a detailed analysis of the current consumer attitude about brands plus strategies you can use to market your second or third rank brand. We recommend this compilation of competitive ideas to those who want to boost their "Challenger" brands.

This is an awesome pop up book! I bought it for my 3 year old's B-Day. He loves looking at the book while I read to him about the prehistoric Mega-Beasts. I actually have learned a lot myself from this book. Although you would normally think this book is for boys. My six year old daughter also enjoys me reading these books to her. They are fun and very educational. I am a high school teacher and I really think this pop up book would be very valuable to any science classroom. I liked this book so much I also purchased the other two in the set!

If you read this very popular book just before bed, and the light is still on in the hallway, you can make the rainbow scales glitter on the page, and realize why the Rainbow Fish was so proud of his beautiful decoration. Sometimes, though, being too proud of outside beauty can blind a fish, or a child (or even, heaven forbid, a parent) to the beauty people hold inside. That's the lesson of this simple tale, imported from Switzerland. It's a useful one for future sneaker and designer clothing shoppers, for rainbow fish--and for quieter, plainer minnows, too.

4 out of 5 stars What's with all the bad reviews?.......2007-08-15

I remember owning this book as a kid and honestly..There's no need to pick at it like some of these reviewers have been. The only thing I remember about the book from my childhood was how shiny the scales were, and how fun they were to look at. That's about it and the story itself didn't scar me or set a bad example as I don't even entirely remember it. The colorful illustration was distracting enough from the story. Sure, it's not perfect and it didn't exactly spread the greatest message, but I can assure you that when asking a grown person who had read the book as a kid what they remembered about it, they probably wouldn't speculate endlessly on how it shaped their morals later on in life. If you show it to a young enough kid, chances are they won't even care what it's about.

So when it comes to monitoring what our kids are taking in...Well, this book is the least of your worries, trust me. Saying that this book is in the "triumvirate of picture book mediocrity...", as one reviewer put it, puzzles me. Do the people reviewing the book even remember being children?

2 out of 5 stars Book's message: Happiness = everyone has the same, regardless of whether they earned it or not.......2007-08-15

I really liked this book when I was little. I really loved (and still do) fish. Plus this book has some beautiful pictures. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. It always made me really sad. Now I know why it made me sad... IT'S COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA! The fish starts out all shiny and pretty, it's way better than the other fish, but the greedy other fish don't want to be friends with it. Instead of being happy with what they have, they want to be beautiful like the rainbow fish. They want to have shiny scales too. So the rainbow fish redistributes his scales to all the other fish until each of the fish only has one shiny scale and nobody is very pretty. He gives up his individuality for the good of the collective. This book has evil communist morals! The author equates individualism with possessive selfishness and promotes collectivism as the correct morality. He depicts the fish's scales as possessions that other fish are entitled to (ie...redistribution of wealth). I can't believe my parents read this book to me.... It does have pretty pictures though.

1 out of 5 stars Socialism Primer for Children.......2007-08-12

This is a beautifully illustrated children's book that communicates socialist ideaology. The author equates individualism with possessive selfishness and promotes collectivism as the correct morality. He depicts the fish's scales as possessions that other fish are entitled to (ie...redistribution of wealth). Of course youngsters won't be able to identify the world view, but they'll be expected to internalize the social/political values modeled in this book.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2007-07-29

what a great story of learning to share and making friends, my children love the foil detail on each page and ask to hear it nearly every day. terrific book, should be a part of every collection

Find 15 of the best-loved verses and pictures from the original Mother Goose in this beautiful board book. Your young child will be delighted to hear these familiar rhymes for the first time and many times thereafter. A great edition for your home library

Amazon.com

Seven beloved verses from Old Mother Goose are imbued with a little more "feeling" with this interactive version of the classic. Young children can stroke the white horse's silky mane in "Banbury Cross," feel the dog's smooth red satin suit in "The Cat and the Fiddle," and dig their tiny fingers into the soft wool of the sheep in "Mary Had a Little Lamb." There's even a scratch-and-sniff spice cake in "Pat-a-Cake"! Tots will love this introduction to the nursery rhymes that will carry them through childhood and beyond. Old-fashioned, Edwardian-style illustrations will please readers of all ages, and the simple two-page-spread format, with poems on the left and pictures on the right, is clean and attractive. The miniature board book is just the right size and sturdiness for small hands and new teeth. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars The Real Mother Goose.......2007-02-07

The book is beautifully written and illustrated. The rymes are the old ones that I remember as a child. I bought the book for my new granddaughter and she, even as a newborn, will listen as her mother reads to her. The illustrations are of the old type and go so well with the text. This is a book she will grow with.

4 out of 5 stars Mother Goose: A Fragmented Tale.......2007-01-12

Hardly is one character or situation introduced until the author skips to another. Even given the brief attention span of a reader of modern fiction, the lack of continuity, excessive use of jump-cuts, and economy of presentation leave the reader searching in vain for the central theme. Still, the basic rawness of its poetic passages has a visceral attraction and a primitive strength. I anxiously await its rendering in the media of film, to see how the director will tie together the diverse range of metaphorical, even alegorical, passages into a cohesive whole.

Fred is not your ordinary mermaid. She's not blonde. She's not buxom. And she's definitely not perky. In fact, Fred can be downright cranky. And it doesn't help matters that her hair is blue.

While volunteering at the New England Aquarium, Fred learns that there are weird levels of toxins in the local seawater. A gorgeous marine biologist wants her help investigating. So does her merperson ruler, the High Prince of the Black Sea. You'd think it would be easy for a mermaid to get to the bottom of things. Think again.

3 out of 5 stars Quirky Characters and Murder in Boston Harbor.......2007-09-19

Fredrika the Merwoman is not exactly a likable character. She has the attitude of one scorned. But she cares about the fish in the ocean. She is offended by any sexual contact anyone else has and she herself needs to have some, although she would never admit it.
This is my first read by this author. I enjoyed the quit wit, but felt like the story lacked some depth. I would read her again thou.

4 out of 5 stars Moody Fred.......2007-09-14

This was a fun read! The whole time I was reading it I was thinking this might be a cute TV series. I would love to see what hot guy they can find to play Arthur!!!!! The mermaid prince from the black sea is everything macho and Thomas the marine biologist/romance writer is everything romantic. Fred is a mermaid marine biologist that hates being a mermaid with a crazy wild hippy mom who got knocked up on the beach by a mermaid. Now that is a wild night. Anyway what a quick and wild ride left you wanting more of MJD.

5 out of 5 stars New Undersea Fantasy will turn the genre on its tail!.......2007-09-13

New and filled with a sarcastic wit that makes one wonder if the author herself is hiding green hair and a tail, SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES is book you absolutely won't want to miss.

Dr. Fredrika "Fred" Bim is a surly hybrid (half mermaid, half biped) marine biologist in charge of the main tank at the New England Aquarium. Fred has her share of problems, including the fact that her parents have decided to clue her in that she's not her father's biological child (duh, the man would drown in a tide pool) and the fact that the fish in Main One are on a hunger strike because she refuses to play "Pet Shop Boys" for them over the P. A. system. Her life has just been made more complicated by:

Jonas her metrosexual best friend who is crushing on her boss (Barb is fifteen years his senior and thinks he's gay). Jonas has a knack for showing up at the worst possible moment and really can't help sticking his nose into her business.

Dr. Barbara Robinson, her boss who thinks that wearing a lab coat and her hair in a braid (so everyone can see her name) gives her an air of authority over her employees who all have more education than she does. Barb however is intuitive and had the great insight to see through Fred's "punk" hair to the brilliant scientist she is. She has just introduced Fred to the new water fellow, Dr. Thomas Pearson.

Thomas, marine biologist and "mermaid geek" who has made a fortune writing romance novels and who is the only person ever to notice that her hair is green not blue. (Her mother had often told her that "Mr. Right" would see her true self, and the fact that he's totally hot doesn't hurt either.) Thomas has come to find the source of toxins in Boston Harbor.

High Prince Artur of the Black Sea who is "Undersea Folk" royalty with Ruby hair and eyes to match has come to claim his "subject's" fealty and to gain her aid in solving the problem of poisons in the harbor. He's not at all pleased to note Thomas' interest in Fred as he's got his eye on her as well. Poor Fred hasn't had a date in quite some time (the last one having unfortunately turned out to be Barb's ex-husband). Now suddenly she has two men after her tail (pardon the pun).

Madison (yeah like the mermaid in "Splash") Fehr the gorgeous, too bubbly, man-eating new intern who predictably "loved dolphins as a girl", has rich parents who just happen to be the museum's benefactors and who just might be connected to the goings on in the bay.

Okay so I loved dolphins as a kid myself, which is why I picked this book up in the first place! I'll be the first to admit that I love any literature that features mermaids or selkies, but this book may just set the genre on its tail (so to speak). SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES is a refreshingly funny modern romantic fantasy, I can't wait for another.

4 out of 5 stars Fast and Funny.......2007-09-13

I liked this book because it was fast and funny. I tend to read some pretty heavy stuff and wanted something light with a twist. Well this was it. Really serious paranormal readers would be disappointed but if you're in the mood for something entertaining, fun, and no overwhelming rhetoric, plot twists, or tedious politics and intrigue then this book is it. FUN. Just plain fun and a great diversion from the stress of the 'real world'

Hope to see more of this sharp-witted character in the future. Nothing else to say. You can read this in one or two days, nice light reading.

For families that place good food high on their list of priorities, educating their wee ones about the joys of sushi may be far more important than teaching about bunnies and balls and flowers. But even those who don't know futomaki from hatahata will relish the playful rhymes and lush collages in Amy Wilson Sanger's wonderful First Book of Sushi.
Miso in my sippy cup,
tofu in my bowl.
Crab and avocado
fill my California roll.
English-speaking tots will love wrapping their lips around Japanese words such as tekka maki, ebi, and wasabi, and will soon be joining in the bouncy recitation of sushi favorites for the very young. This bright little board book, with its gorgeous array of patterns and textured, mixed-media collages, looks good enough to eat. And who knows, it might even inspire picky eaters to try a little egg tamago or squishy salmon roe (otherwise known as ikura)! (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

For the littlest fans of that favorite Japanese finger food comes a sturdy board book sure to inspire giggles (and even some growling stomachs!). Sanger's textural, mixed media and cut paper collages form an ideal accompaniment to her bouncy rhyming text to captivate/fascinate even the most finicky eaters. Whether a temaki know-it-all or clueless about ebi, First Book of Sushi is a welcome side dish for nori experts and novices of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars my baby LOVES these books.......2007-05-23

i was given a stack of these board books at my baby shower. First Book of Sushi, Yum Yum Dim Sum, Urban Babies Wear Black, as well as, the Petit Connoisseur: Art and The Petit Connoisseur: fashion, my kid LOVES them!! As stated they are BOARD books so your older kids who can actually read may get bored but for the little ones these are fun rhyming colorful introductions to different foods and such! And they are virtually indestructible! Great addition to any new baby room!

5 out of 5 stars cool and quirky board book.......2007-05-07

My one year old son loves this board book! We actually have the entire series. It's fun and creative, and I don't have to worry about him ripping the pages. We are hooked!

3 out of 5 stars First Book of Sushi - Tiny Little Book.......2007-01-22

This is a very little kid's book, one of those small 5.5 inch x 5.5 inch, indestructable, 10 thick little pages. I was surprised when I received it. Almost too infant-like for my 5 yr old. It was a little fun though and I didn't return it. Just skimpy, a little disappointing. Honestly, can't remember if it was adequately decribed in the Amazon description. For $6.95, you decide.

4 out of 5 stars Turning raw fish into fun rhymes.......2006-11-05

This is a fun twist on your typical children's book. Its got colorful pictures and whimsical rhymes, but the funniest part is the subject matter -- sushi: "I'll take yellowtail hamachi / and a red maguro slice. / Big, BIG futomaki has so many grains of rice!"

I'm sure my kids don't understand exactly what what's being talked about (and sometimes I don't either). But there's a pleasant pace to the rhymes and the words are fun to say out loud ("tekka maki" and "kappa maki" sound a bit like the nonsense phrases of Dr. Seuss).

Don't forget to notice that the last line of the story is actually on the back of the book. The first couple times I read it to my kids I didn't see that, and the book seemed to come to a puzzlingly abrupt end.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book!.......2007-09-12

Yes, it is a shorter version of the original, but its simple enough to keep her attention and she loves the rhyme of the text. She smiles every night when I pick up the book to read it to her. She just adores it!

3 out of 5 stars Needs a little more text.........2007-04-05

This is a very cute book but... It ends very abruptly and is not quite long enough for my 1 and a half year old. She loves trying to count the fish on top, and trying to say the color names, but just a few more pages would have made this book a lot better.

4 out of 5 stars Rhyming and funny.......2006-12-29

My toddler loves this one. The illustrations are short and crisp and just simple enough for my 18 month old. I am referring to the board book edition.

4 out of 5 stars Baby likes it........2006-11-11

We really like having the fishes on the top of the book. It helps to count 1-5.

5 out of 5 stars adorable.......2006-08-08

I had Dr. Seuss' books as a child and want my baby to enjoy them as much as I did. This nursery book is brightly colored, very sturdy and my 5-mo old keeps reaching for it. The plastic fish on the top make noise and baby loves to keep count with them. I'm very very happy with this purchase. I also reccomend other board books form this nursery collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Place To Go Fishing.......2007-05-10

I have been in the aquariast hobby for quite a few years. Though I haven't had a tank set-up for almost 10 years since retiring from the US Navy and moving from Va. to Ga. I decided for the sake of the fish in my 150 gal tank it was best left behind in the care of my neighbor and best friend JD. I am now in the research and planning stages of setting up a 250 gal. reef tank. Since so much has happened in the last 10 years I felt it was wise to get some reading material for varied opinions and fact gathering. I now have 5 reference volumes to refer to. This book by Vince is not only a beautiful book with outstanding pictures but is my favorite. Crammed with every possible aspect of this hobby. From beginner to advanced the info is superb. In fact a Newbie could take this book as a stand alone reference from your very first Marine Fish only tank to an explosively beautiful Reef with Fish, Inverts, and Corals. It gives info on all the types of filtration from the Jaubert System,(My Favorite), to the extreme hi-tech route..Plan on spending major bucks if you go the hi-tech route. in my opinion the Jaubert System is as close to natural as you can get and the results I have seen from those using it match if not excel over much more expensive set-ups, but hey, back to the book. Every possible life form is fully described in easy to understand detail, inhabitant compatibility, location of origin, feeding, disease care, all of it. The way it is organized makes it superior for that "gotta have info right now" scenario when one of your prized specimens needs immediate attention. Though the diseases coverage is brief it is concise and easy to follow. This book is now among 2 that sit out on my coffee table. It gets read or at least browsed through alot by my visiting friends. Kids love the pictures. I highly recommend it for anyone from beginner to advanced. You can find higher priced books but non better. It's great buy at twice the price.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the marine aquarium hobbyist.......2003-12-08

I have positively oodles of books on fish behavior, diversity and ecology. When I brought this book home the wife asked "why do you need another fish book?" I will tell you like I told her.

This is the best book I have seen on the fishes commonly found in the aquarium industry. The fishes are arranged according to systematic (evolutionary) relationships, so it is in a format that is familiar to me, and more useful to people that are not already familiar with fish groups. Organization, however, is a minor part of a book. But the information in this book is also top notch. There is important information on hundreds of species referencing, feeding, care, availability and compatibility that is important when considering an addition to your salt water aquarium. There are also excellent sections on general aquarium keeping and reef inverts. This makes this a must have for any hobbyist. Lastly this is also a VERY attractive book, it now gets to be in the living room (near the aquarium where it should be) instead of in my library.

I didn't use those exact words with the wife, but you get the picture. If you're looking for a book on salt water aquarium fishes this is a great choice. Hopefully amazon will begin carrying it soon.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-02-08

This is a great resource to have for travelling. I love the tabbed setup that makes it easy to get to the section I need. Obviously a lot of thought was put in to making the book (with an amazing amount of info.) as easy to use as possible.

It is obvious that a great deal of thought and experimentation has been put forth in the making of this valuable resource!

After being gf (and other things free) for 5 years, I appreciate the resource as it will make it far more possible for me to visit Italy (and other countries in my future) maintaining my health as much as possible along the way! Well done!

I have dining cards and they work quite well, but the next time I travel, I will be packing this book to take as well, without a doubt!

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource For Dining Out Gluten Free.......2007-01-25

Eating when you're away from your own home is always a challenge when you are on a special diet.

In "Let's Eat Out!" Koeller and La France have put together an impressive amount of information to make life easier for travelers and people who just want to eat out with family and friends.

I found the book a bit difficult at first because there is just so much content to sort out. It's definitely not a book to digest in one sitting!

I soon realized it really is a combination of broad reference guide and quick reference "cheat sheets." Once that became clear, it was much easier to scan and use the table of contents and index to find specific information. You can choose to just use the quick guides or go to the more detailed explanations.

All in all, the authors cover a very broad topic in an orderly fashion that makes it easy to locate information for a variety of situations. They use 7 common cuisine types, from American Steak and Seafood to Thai, to analyze the issues a diner can expect to face. They offer comments on the ingredients, the way food is prepared and on likely sources of hidden cross contamination.

After you read a couple of these, you begin to see the patterns and it would not be so difficult to apply the same process to another type of food. As they point out, it's all about educating yourself and learning what questions to ask.

Poring through their food/menu analysis, I discovered to my dismay that the item I had been selecting from a fast food restaurant most likely contains hidden gluten that I would not have thought to question. I did wonder why I didn't feel good every time I ate there!

Not only does the book cover information about individual foods, styles of cuisine, and 10 common food allergens, it also provides specific information about travel including contact information for individual airlines and the special diets they provide, contact information for associations and organizations in many parts of the world and even some translation phrases.

I'd recommend "Let's Eat Out!" as a valuable reference book. It's especially useful for those who frequently eat out or travel and even better, those who'd like to eat out more but have hesitated to take the risk. It could open up a whole new world.

The authors deserve the recognition that their book received as a Benjamin Franklin award finalist for 2006 in the Health (Wellness/Nutrition) category.

3 out of 5 stars For gluten intolerance and food sensitivities.......2007-01-20

"Let's Eat Out!" covers a very difficult topic, restaurant dining for people with food allergies and intolerances. For adults who should avoid top allergens due to mild to moderate food allergies and intolerances, this can be a very useful book. I have already referenced it a few times for some restaurant inspiration, outside of my usual Asian selections.

The book itself is stylishly laid out with color-coded chapters, strategically placed photographs, useful charts, and sample menus. It addresses ten of the most common food allergens: dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten (an intolerance), soy, peanuts, tree nuts, corn, fish, and shellfish.

It should be noted, that this book was written with celiac disease, multiple food "sensitivities", and gluten intolerance in mind. It may not be very appropriate for those who have life-threatening food allergies or severe intolerances. This is not to blame the authors. The various styles of food preparation combined with a high risk of cross-contamination in food service kitchens, make this a complicated area to address. Though, as one food allergy mom pointed out to me, the "Allergy-Free" title is a bit deceiving in this respect.

Also, for those who do have true food allergies, this book should not be used as a dining bible, but more as a suggestion based resource for further research and diligence. As someone who lives with a milk protein allergy, I unfortunately noted many errors with respect to the foods listed as "not containing the allergen." Guacamole (often made with sour cream), margarine (frequently contains lactose and/or milk protein), and sausages (many brands contain cheese) were just a few that caused me to raise the red flag. Your own questions and food label reading would still be required when utilizing this book.

Luckily, the authors do relay what questions to ask, and in many different languages. Kim Koeller has traveled extensively while living with multiple food allergies. This is well evidenced by the resources provided, including a multi-lingual phrase section and what seems to be a very useful airline guide. For those most interested in travel, the authors of "Let's Eat Out!" have also produced a "Multi-Lingual Phrase Passport" for food allergies that is pocket-sized. I thought this was a very handy little guide!

3 out of 5 stars Let's Eat Out!.......2007-01-09

Basically, it says be suspicious of EVERYTHING. As a Celiac, I am already. This book did not help me and I was disappointed but I can see how it might help someone newly diagnosed. Being vigilant is the key.

3 out of 5 stars Its OK...........2006-12-22

I was a little disapointed because many of the allergy graphs show gluten as possible, so that isn't much of a help, since that was already a given. I guess if you are looking for some where to START looking for gluten in your food, then this is a place to start. If you have been doing it for a while, then you really don't need this book....
