Excellent.......2001-07-26
This is a great book for Salamander lovers, like myself. Petranka provides well gathered information and writes it out on paper well. I would not change a thing. I am a student and have used this on all my papers and Reports. i has given me well grades and it provides excellent information. i Rate it 5 stars. So give it a try! Then go out and turn over a few logs youll love what you see!
Essential reference for serious herpetologists.......2000-08-01
Petranka provides a masterful summary of our current state of knowledge about the taxonomy, natural history, ecology, and behavior of North American salamanders. No other work comes close to matching the depth of coverage of this book. It is no surprise that this work received the Wildlife Society's prestigious Book of the Year Award.
Not a well done book.......2000-06-16
Good photographs and maps. Text okay. Taxonomy is completely out of date and common names are the tongue-twisters used earlier in the last century (instead of standardized common names, which have been adopted nationwide since 1978). These errors make the book difficult to use. Publishers should have sent it out for review by a younger generation of herpetologists before approving it. Not recommended.
The most complete work on ecology of USA Caudata so far.......1999-07-15
As a keeper and breeder of rare Asian and American salamanders I'm very happy with the arrival of this book. It's so far the most comprehensive & complete work on life environments & ecology of American Urodela species I read. It truly helps us/me overhere to install the animals in a natural urodarium, keeping them as close to nature as possible. A similar older standard book by E. R. Dunn was more of scientifical nature. The only thing that comes close to it concerns Pfingstens book on Ohio Salamanders. I'm sure this book will become a future standardwork in this peticular field. It's already famous in the midst of Belgian, German and Dutch urodela circles. If only this excisted for Asian species too.

A Boy's Dream.......2007-01-29
An imaginative story about a little boy who finds a salamander in the forest, takes it home to keep in his room, and then gradually transforms his room into a forest (every little boy's dream). Well done!
Life Full Of Imagination .......2006-12-01
The Salamander Room has a great expression of the creativeness of a child's mind. This book is an amazing story for children. In this story a young boy, Brian finds a salamander while exploring the forest and takes it home. Like most mothers, his is worried how he will care for his new friend. Brian's mother asks him many questions concerning the care for this unusual house guest. For every question Brian has an answer. With every answer Brian finds that it's better to bring Nature in to make his friend comfortable and feel right at home. As a mother I appreciated the author's expression of how creative a child's mind can be. This book also demonstrates how amazing children really are. My children and I enjoyed this book and I would highly recommend it in every child's library.
Satisfied customer.......2005-09-15

A Salamanders Home.......2003-03-02
In this amazing book for children a young boy named Brian is exploring in a forest and finds a little salamander and takes it home. His mother is worried and keeps asking him how he is going to take care of this extraordinary creature. Well his mother comes up with more and more questions, while Brian keeps coming up with more and more answers.
As the story progresses Brian's bedroom begins to change, and the more questions he answers, the more his bedroom changes.
Near the end you begin to see what his bedroom is changing into.
At the end of the story his bedroom is filled with a multitude of animals and his room is now a forest but he and his salamander friend are happy and tired and they fall asleep.
This interesting book was written by: Anne Mazer and illustrated by Steve Johnson.
Book Description
Take a close look at your local lake, pond or woodland pool. Don't mind the mud - see it from a kid's eye view. Here is the journal and scrapbook of Klint, a young Planet Scout who kept notes for a year on his discoveries and became engrossed by the daily drama of turtles, crayfish dragonflies and water skimmers. After writing and illustrating three best-selling nature books as a teenager, Kristin Joy Pratt-Serafini has now created a model nature journal. Based on her cousin Klint, she portrays an inquisitive boy who keep a journal/scrapbook as he explores lakes and ponds. The result is both fun and informative. David Sobel, co-director of the Center for Environmental Education, raves about this book as "a gift to the place-based education movement in North America. This lusciously illustrated picture book/field guide/treasure hunt is just the invitation teachers, parents and children need to get them exploring the ponds and lakes in their neighborhoods." The journal format creates a text that is easily accessible, but deep in information and intrigue.

Pond Dipping at its best!.......2007-03-21
Ages 6-12
Introduction to Scientific Journaling
Great First Field Guide -offers Identification of wetland species. Mix of fiction story of girl "pond dipping" and studying the area as well as "punch out" factoids about wetlands.
Wonderful nature book for children!.......2001-04-12
I definitely recommend this book! It works on many different levels, and you will page through it many times, discovering new surprises with each reading. Kristin's latest book is a fascinating account of how keen observations of Nature can lead to a deeper appreciation. This book is vividly illustrated and describes a journal-making process that is valuable to any teacher or child. A great addition to any Nature-lover's bookshelf!
Customer Reviews:
The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Pterosaurs.......2004-09-28
"The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Pterosaurs" written by Dr. Peter Wellnhofer is what is said in the title... an encyclopedia of Pterosaurs. Anything you wish to know about the Pterosaurs is in this book, if it is known. This book is excellent in comparative anatomy and has wonderful detailed and indepth illustrations, pictures and artwork to make the point.
I found this book to be very interesting and it opened my eyes to the varied and different species that were the Pterosours. Some with long tails, while others had hands attached to their wings. Without fossil finds and without paleontology, the study of life in the Earth's past, we would have no knowledge of this large, interesting, and indeed fascinating group of animals which became extinct, along with other saurians, at the end of the Cretaceous 65 million years ago. This means that no human being has ever seen a live Pterosaur, of which the largest had a wing-span of about 39 feet. We can only form an impression of them by scientific analysis of their fossil remains, bones and skeletal imprints of their skin and possibly tracks that they left behind of soft ground and by making comparisons with other flying vertebrates that we can study more closely, like birds and bats.
This book is very detailed and I wouldn't recommend it for a child unless they are exceptional, as this book imparts a very detailed knowledge into the life, habit, and habitat of Pterosaurs. In doing this it quickly becomes clear that Pterosaurs were different in many respects, Pterosaurs also occupy a special position vis-a-vis reptiles as we know them today, like snakes, lizards, tortoises, crocodiles and the tuatara. This book brings the Pterosaurs back to life in the mind's eye for no other reason this is an excellent text.
It is well-written with plenty of illustrations to example the points made in the text, giving the reader a through fixation to the points being made in the book. But that does not make them any less fascinating; indeed it leaves room for the imagination to play its part in forming an opinion of how these animals functioned. The contents of this book are as follows:
The History of Fosssil Finds
What are Pterosaurs?
Pterosaurs of the Triassic
Pterosaurs of the Jurassic
Pterosaurs of the Cretaceous
Life Style
Extinction of the Pterosaurs
Pterosaur Reconstructions
Other Flying Vertebrates
Systematics and Museums

Index
At the time of the publication of "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Pterosaurs" Dr. Peter Wellnhofer has devoted twenty-five years in the study of Pterosaurs. The attention to detail shows in this published work. "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Pterosaurs" is an excellent reference book for those interested in dinosaurs and especially the pterosaurs. This is a solid 5 star book and there is no doubt about it, an excellent reference to your library.
Beautifully illustrated, indepth and thorough examination.......1998-01-28
This is not a "kid's book," although I would not hesitate to give it to any child seriously interested in Mesozoic life. The illustrations--beautiful color paintings and detailed charcoal sketches--are superb, top-of-the-line examples of reconstruction. The text is an exhaustive survey of the history of pterosaur finds, the taxonomy of pterosaurs, and an up-to-date review of their evolution, biomechanics and ecology. The painstaking descriptions of representative fossils some may find tedious (like I said, NOT a "children's book"), but I found it refreshing to read a mass-market, beautifully rendered reference that wasn't afraid to expose the general reader to the details of paleontology. In this, it is one of a kind, really, the "Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs," from the same publisher, coming close. Now, Mr. Publisher, how about a third volume covering the marine "reptiles" of the Mesozoic? I would purchase it in a heartbeat.

Book Description
A fascinating world of scientific wonders, the amphibian species is full of unusual and extreme adaptations and is home to numerous unsolved mysteries.
Amphibians is your guide to these intriguing and diverse creatures.
Often misunderstood, this species which includes frogs, toads, salamanders and newts, surpasses all other vertebrate species in survival and reproduction strategies. In addition, as the stunning photographs depict, amphibians are also creatures of extreme beauty. Many tropical tree -- and poison-arrow frogs are just as dazzling in appearance as some of the world's most colorful birds.
Scientific experts from all over the globe have contributed their knowledge and understanding of amphibians to this comprehensive volume. An excellent resource for both experienced and amateur scientists,
Amphibians, includes information on thousands of amphibian species from throughout the world. This useful reference guide also includes information on the biology, physiology and evolution of amphibians, as well as chapters on Ecology and Ethology, The Meaning of Amphibians for Mankind, and Endangerment and Species Protection. This last section is important as global warming, habitat loss and pesticides have placed many amphibians -- even common frogs and toads -- on the road to extinction.
Fascinating and informative,
Amphibians, is one of the most comprehensive books available on this adaptive and ubiquitous species.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, but tough reading.......2005-12-24
I was actually disappointed by this book.
Each chapter in this book was written by a different person, most of them highly educated academic herpetologists. There's nothing wrong with the information, except if it's become dated since publication. Unfortunately the whole book is just hard to read! The authors wrote for their own educational level; whether the rest of us can follow it or not depends on how interested we are in the material, how good of a herpetological dictionary we have, and our own educational level.
The pictures are beautiful, probably worth the cover price alone.
It's just - as a writer - I know this could have been written so all could read it. My frustration is that people, particularly young ones, would get turned off on herpetology and perhaps even on science after trying to read this book.
Fabulous photos, but so-so text.......2004-08-29
The photos in this book are undoubtedly its strength. It may be worth buying this book just for the pictures. The problems with the text are as follows. First, it is obviously translated. It has been edited for correct English, but some of it still sounds awkward. The word usage often seems strange. I found a few errors, probably introduced by the translation/editing process. Second, it is not clear who it is written for. The vocabulary is probably too advanced for a non-scientist, but the information is nothing new for the specialist. Third, some of the information is too cursory to be of much value. For example, the chapter on diseases is very general; I don't think anyone would find the information here of much value.
This book is worthwhile, but I would not consider it an essential reference work. Buy it for the photos, but don't expect the text to be excellent.
Very Informative.......2000-11-22
This has a lot of information in it and pictures, this is a totally awesome book

Book Description
The sequel to the #1 New York Times bestseller Shadowmancer.
In this thrilling, much-anticipated sequel to the runaway hit Shadowmancer, G. P. Taylor once again takes readers on a gripping journey. Kate and Thomas have barely escaped the evil sorcerer Demurral, and are sailing to London to make a fresh start. But someone knows they are coming, and is lying in wait to lure them into the darkest heart of the city. Meanwhile, Raphah, who has had a narrow escape of his own, sets out on a terrifying journey to find his friends, all the time haunted by a shadowy beast. Eventually, the friends' paths meet on a cursed street, hidden from the world-a place where fates are decided and old enemies seek revenge. They thought it was over . . . but can evil ever be destroyed?
Customer Reviews:
A stunning sequel.......2007-08-08
The runaway popular book, Shadowmancer, now has a true sequel (the books Wormwood and Tersias the Oracle were related, but did not follow the same characters).
Taylor has worked in the music industry, and for many years on the Yorkshire Police Force, before becoming ordained as an Episcopalian vicar. He self-published his first book, Shadowmancer, selling his motorcycle to get the money. The book was a hit--on the bestseller lists.
The story of Thomas, Kate and Raphah continues, with Beadle assisting Raphah (who has not died after being thrown overboard, but has been swallowed by a whale!). Jacob Crane, the smuggler captain of The Magenta, takes Kate and Thomas to London. Raphah and Beadle travel to London by coach, fleeing the evil Vicar Demurral and searching for Thomas and Kate. They meet a varied group of travelers, among them Cartaphilus Barghast and the young and magical Lady Tanville Chilnam. When Crane's his boat is seized, he helps Kate and Thomas to flee to a refuge in Salamander Street.
Crane's old friend Pallium is oddly different. He is thin, and fixated on counting money--and praises his landlord Galphus. Kate discovers a haunted painting in her room, of a young woman named Isabella. Galphus seems kindly and safe, but is he really? What sorts of shoes does he make in his huge factory filled with child workers? Are Raphah and Beadle being followed by a change-shifter, a nasty huge beast of dog? Some of their fellow travelers seem to be on the same trail, also looking for two children. Who can be trusted? Who will survive?
The three friends are re-united finally at the end of the book, after harrowing dangers, in a cataclysmic and frightening conclusion.
Armchair Interviews says: The imagery, symbols, characters and the depiction of dark magical times is wonderfully wrought.
A great read.......2007-08-06
I enjoyed the book very much. If you liked Shadowmancer you will enjoy this one too.
Part of a series.......2007-07-26
This book is part os a series, not the first, so it would have helped to have known the characters from a previous book. The story is a fairly routine adventure with good guys and bad guys. It provides mild distraction for a reader who has nothing else to do for a couple of hours.
gripping dark fantasy .......2007-05-16
In 1752 England Obadiah Demurral continues his quest to conquer heaven in order to rule on earth. Three children (Raphah, Thomas and Kate) with the help of the angel Raphael thwart his last efforts, but he is not finished. The three children travel to London aboard pirate Jacob Crane's ship, who has become a believer. He is taking his previous cargo to Salamander Street, supposedly a place of safety from Demurral.
Raphah gets separated from the others when he falls overboard. When Beadle, Demurral former slave happens upon a beach he sees a whale and out of his mouth comes Raphah. They head to London together. Meanwhile Crane, Kate, and Thomas reach London but officials board the ship and confiscate his cargo and inform him that Demurral sent word ahead that Crane kidnapped the children and stole something precious from him. When they reach the inn on Salamander Street Galphus takes Thomas to his factory and forces him to sign indenture papers. Later Kate is taken to Galphus's factory as a prisoner. Crane eventually is captured as well. They are waiting for Demurral to reach them as Galphus is his minion as good and evil clash for the souls of the children and their allies.
This dark fantasy grips readers with its good vs. evil war on earth in which Demurral seems more powerful than even the angel Raphael. The story line is action-packed never slowing down in its epic battle on the streets of eighteenth century London, yet the key players are fully developed so that the audience understands motives (some altruistic to save the world; others ambitious to rule the world). G.P. Taylor provides a wonderful fantasy with a religious theme that readers of all ages will appreciate.

Book Description

There he learns that Uncle Giorgio is the Master of the Mountain; he can control the volcano. He is also an alchemist, able to make gold from the tears of the fiery salamander he captured from the heart of the mountain. INTENSE AND GRIPPING YOUNG ADULT DRAMA.......2004-06-15
A dramatic and gripping story of a young boy, Alfredo, orphaned when his home is burned down and suddenly finds himself in the care of his strange uncle. Uncle Giorgio is more than just strange he is also the Master of the Mountain, the one with the gift to control the volcano and protect the lives of all who live under it's shadow. But is he just strange or maybe something more, something evil? Alfredo discovers that he too has the power to talk to the mountain and what it tells him is that Uncle Giorgio is maybe trying to control more than just itself.
TEARS OF THE SALAMANDER is a fairly short book and a very quick read. Of course one of the reasons it went so quickly is the fact that I had a difficult time putting it down at all!
Young adults (and some of us older ones also) who like a bit of drama with a dash of fantasy are going to really like this story.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it!
Intriguing.......2003-12-15
This is an intriguing book. At first I thought it was bizarre - salamanders living in the lava of the volcanoe making gold and curing cancer with their tears. But, after finishing it, I find myself reflecting on the story and liking it more and more. The evil uncle is consumed with his quest for incredible wealth, and conquering death and having unending life. Unfortunately to achieve his desires he commits some unspeakably evil acts - he is totally corrupted. I think you should read it and see what you think!
