Return of the Eagle: How America Saved Its National Symbol
ASIN: 0670884480 |
Amazon.com
Aloof and powerful, the once endangered bald eagle is slowly making a comeback, ecologically speaking, throughout much of North America, to which it is unique. For the last two decades wildlife photographer John Pezzenti has been recording this reversal of fortunes, traveling where the eagles do and bringing home images from his travels, some 150 of which are gathered in this volume. Many of Pezzenti's striking views come from the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska, home to a huge concentration of bald eagles; some 20,000 nesting pairs are found in the region, nourished by silver salmon and other large fish. Pezzenti captures images of little-seen aspects of eagle behavior, including courtship flights that involve several males, who compete to mate with a female by exhibiting an "impressive display of calls and acrobatic maneuvers." He also provides the only photographic record yet published of eagles hatching in the wild, a sequence that alone is worth the price of the book. While noting that conditions are much improved, especially after the federal ban of the use of the pesticide DDT, Pezzenti observes that bald eagles are not yet wholly safe from harm; a thriving black market for flight feathers exists, in which a single white tail plume can bring a thousand dollars. For admirers of this spectacular raptor, Pezzenti's book is required reading. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Brilliantly designed and lavishly packaged--a stunning photographic portrait of our national symbol in its natural habitats
John Pezzenti, whose Alaska brought us the tenderness and grandeur of America's last wilderness, obsessively seeks out the remotest corners with the most untouched wildlife--and then positions himself and waits patiently for the perfect image. Driven by a daring that defies solitude and danger and fired by a passion to immortalize what is threatened by civilization and technology, Pezzenti produces work of the highest craftsmanship and artistic purpose to be found in nature photography today.
The images in The American Eagle capture the magnificent bald eagle as never before--in flight, in battle in the air, hunting, resting, nesting--from the murky Florida Everglades to the sub-zero temperatures of the Appalachian Mountains. They detail the complete lifespan of the bird that since the early days of America, has supremely embodied the bold spirit and soaring beauty of our country. With rare, unforgettable color photographs and a text that tells the struggle for survival of this once-endangered bird, The American Eagle is a gift to awe every nature lover, photographer, or patriot.

The American Eagle.......2005-07-05
This book is absolutely exquisite. My husband is an avid eagle fan, a gorgeous coffee table quality book of photos was the perfect gift to add to his collection. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is an admirer of eagles.
without exception.......2000-08-07
John Pezzenti has the nobility of an eagle...the stamina of a panther and the endurance of an owl intent on it's foe. He is beyond any human explanation of what a photograher should or could ever aspire to be. When I experience his photograghs I am transformed to the reality that all mankind could benifit from his example. We are but players in the realm of a wonderous life cycle...not within our command but certainly within our protection. Thank You John for your gift and sharing it!
Pezzenti brilliantly captures spirit of American Eagle!.......2000-03-17
Prepare yourself for another exhilarating adventure by one of wildlife photography's most talented photojournalists. John Pezzenti, Jr. has the unique ability to take his reader on a journey filled with fascinating tales and unparalleled photographs. In the American Eagle Pezzenti brilliantly captures the very essence and spirit of an American treasure - the powerful and majestic bald eagle - photographed by many but rarely to such perfection. Depicting the bald eagle in every conceivable situation, Pezzenti begins his photographic journey from the Florida Everglades through picturesque New England and northwest to Alaska - his home territory. I thoroughly enjoyed Pezzenti's engaging stories and portrayals of the dedicated eagle protectors across America who work tirelessly toward the survival of this magnificent bird. The photos alone make The American Eagle a "must have" for anyone with an adventurous spirit and a love of America's national treasure. Once again, Pezzenti has proven himself to be one of wildlife's finest photographers working in the field today.
Stunningly beautiful images!.......1999-10-17
Not long ago I sat with John Pezzenti Jr. in his beat up Suburban that he uses for nature photography as rain pounded upon the roof. John showed me a pre-release copy of his newest book, American Eagle. My 13 year old nephew from California looked over my shoulder as I turned each page, stunned by the breadth and depth of John's photographic coverage of this symbol of America. To say this is a remarkable book is an under statement. My nephew summed up how magnificant this book is when we were driving back home. "John's pictures are amazing," Shane said. "I'm going to start saving today so I can buy that book when it comes out!"
Truely remarkable!.......1999-09-29
Wow!! From the time you see the cover, you are completely riveted to the spectacular images contained within the pages of this incredible effort. John has captured on film the story of the Bald Eagle like no other. From birth to adolescence, maturity and death Jonh's stunning images ( many never before photographed behavior)have given us the rare opportunity to glimpse into the world of this magnificent bird. The pages take you across the country illustrating the plight of the eagle, as well as conservation efforts to re-establish it throughout its traditional range. Each photograph illustrates John's dedication, passion and incredible ability. I look forward to seeing more from this extremely talented man. I highly recommend this book to all. Congratulations John, continue your groundbreaking work!
Book Description
Inspired by Robinson Crusoe and Jack London, Michael Modzelewski, jettisoned all baggage accompanying life in the comfortable middle class and set out to find raw, unharnessed wilderness. He found it on Blackfish Sound ("Blackfish" is the Kwakiutl Indian word for the killer whale) in the Inside Passage, the rugged coastline between Seattle and Alaska.
Leaving his home in Aspen, which had become a false Shangri-La for him, Modzelewski settled on a desolate island in the Inside Passage, a place which "after seducing you with beauty would shake you with fear. An unpredictable place that kept you always prepared, honed to the keen edge of life." Here he lived alone for months on end.
Inside Passage describes his experiences in this unspoiled setting, where the sky is his ceiling, mountains are his walls, and physical challenges test him down to the marrow. He also forms unusual friendships with passing yachters, salmon fishermen, Kwakiutl Indians, loners, and the owner of the house he is staying at, Will Malloff, a man of oversized personality -- a healer, builder, woodsman, and thinker. Modzelewski writes with a love for nature and gentle humor about his interactions with the native animals (eagles, whales, wolves), local animals (cats, dogs, "tame" wild boars), and other settlers.
Inside Passage is the powerful story of one man learning the ways of self-reliance in a soul-filled search through the northern wilderness.
Customer Reviews:
Real Deal.......2006-04-25
I live in Alaska and a friend recommended Mr. Modzelewski's book. And now I recommend it to the world. Sure, there's the usual descriptions of animals, ocean, weather and solitude but what makes this book special is the author goes so much deeper into the Spirit behind things. Haven't stopped thinking about his experiences and it's been a month now since I finished the book.
PURE DRAMA.......2005-06-19
I'm an actress and read scripts, rarely books -- but after a producer friend recommended Inside Passage to me, I couldn't put it down! In fact, I read it three times. It was like watching a movie -- that's how vividly Michael Modzelewski writes. Alaska is a far different world than Los Angeles and I escaped completely to a pure and inspiring reality. Thank you, Michael! You are gifted and blessed. And who knows? Maybe we can turn this captivating story into a film, with the author and animals the main characters and could there be a more beautiful setting than the Inside Passage to Alaska -- as evoked so wonderfully in this poetic prose.
Interesting but too idealistic.......2005-04-01
Quick read. Definitely worth it if you have been or are going to be in the region. Some of his scientific stuff is a little off but it's not the right book if you are looking for exacting detail on these subjects. Modzelewski's perspectives were very idealistic and I found it a little difficult to believe that the experiences he relates were quite a spiritual or mind altering as he sometimes makes them seem. The author does pull series of stories or facts together well. The chapters addressed themes - like the tribes, animals, the island's owner, etc. Modzelewski doesn't try to tell you everything there is to know about any of these subjects but selects what he thinks is interesting and relates it briefly. Often the points he makes or the stories he chooses to tell are not ones that you might have expected.
Inside Passage -- Captivating!!!!!.......2004-09-08
A wonderful voyage in mother nature's womb, evoking feelings of awe, and revere at the colossal universe, inhaling the powerful imagery of wilderness through Michael.
Beyond Human.......2004-08-11
Michael Modzelewski writes like a wild animal. If the beasts could speak it wouldn't come out much different than how Michael describes them. The author knows no limits -- extending into and giving shape to all animate matter in super insightful poetic prose.

Book Description
A majestic bird swoops down, snatches its prey, then soars into the clouds. It is a bald eagle, one of North America's largest hunting birds.
For centuries the bald eagle has been a symbol of majesty, strength, and freedom. In 1782 it became the official emblem of the United States. Yet now this fierce hunter is in danger of extinction.
Gail Gibbons's thoroughly researched text and dramatic illustrations present the bald eagle in all its grandeur- hunting, courting, nesting, and hatching- with fascinating facts and statistics about this remarkable winged predator and the efforts to save it.

Great Teaching Tool with Gorgeous Illustations.......1999-07-30
I used this book as the basis for a program on eagles prepared for children ages 5-9. The book provides lots of accurate facts about the eagle, its habitat requirements and how we can insure its viability. The illustrations are wonderful and enhance the technical story of the eagle being told by Gail Gibbons. I will use this book again for my own children and for programs focusing on eagles for the early elementary school age kids to learn about our eagle population on the James River.
Book Description
Spectacular color photographs capture the majesty, grace, and power of bald eagles in this inspiring story of how the United States saved its living symbol of freedom and independence. Declared our national bird in 1782, bald eagles were on the brink of extinction in the 1960s. But to citizens everywhere, such a loss was unthinkable. From government agencies to conservation groups and grassroots heroes, Americans banded together for a common cause, and this beautiful, wild spirit once again flies freely across our skies. Return of the Eagle chronicles this American success story with words and photos, including some of the most incredible photographs ever taken of eagles in flight. Return of the Eagle also features a unique directory to more than 150 acres throughout the nation where bald eagles may be viewed in the wild.

The Bald Eagle's View of American History.......2006-08-26
This book will bring information on several levels. Not only do you learn facts about the American bald eagle, but important times of U.S. history plus pictures of actual American postal stamps that tie in with the story. A great book for 3-5th grades.
Really fun and good.......2006-08-15
I acculy know Mr. Colman, he came to my school to talk about his book before it was published. This is a really great book and fun to read because it's not just. In 1942, the bla bla bla of bla bla bla blaed throught the bla bla. The people were bla bla and bla bla. Bla bla was a professinal bla bla and bla....... It is better than that. It is great! and It's his first book.
A great read.......2006-06-25
In Colman's debut children's book, he takes the reader on a tour through American history with the flair of a great storyteller. The progress of the building of America is beautifully contrasted with the plight of the bald eagle. This book is one that adults will enjoy reading and discussing with children, as its many layers provide a variety of subjects, including history, eagles, stamp collecting and environmental responsibility, to talk about. The illustrations are truly lovely and fit the tone the writer set forth. There is also a section of notes in the back that flesh out the topics and provide reference materials, a great treat. All in all, highly recommended.

The Black Robe and the Bald Eagle is a fascinating historical analysis of the role that the Supreme Court has played in U.S. foreign policy. It challenges the general belief that the Court has traditionally stayed out of the political fray of foreign policy controversies.

very information.......2002-06-07
My son picked this book our at the library today. We read it together. Lots of great info along with a story of how baby eagles grow! Fun book!
Beautifully rendered illustrations with insightful narration.......1999-10-06
I absolutely love this book--visually stunning with accurate, sometimes to the point of scientific, drawings of the growth cycle of the bald eagle. The narration is very informative while at the same time engaging for younger readers as well. I learned more in this book about eagles than in any field guide. When's the next one coming out?
This book is very appealing for both parent and child........1999-09-02
The illustrations and the story are both immediately appealing. The information is fascinating and what is especially useful is that there are two levels of information available on each page. That is, the story for children about how a baby eagle joins the world and then additional information for the older child and the parent. Its so engaging and beautiful!
Book Description
Written with the artist or sculptor in mind, this painstakingly detailed reference to the bald eagle covers the anatomy of the bird down to a feather. Exact anatomical sketches—done in multiple dimensions, from various angles, and in many different postures—provide a visual study unmatched by other references. Some drawings focus specifically on one part of the bird, such as a single contour feather, while other portraits show the whole animal in motion—soaring, diving, and perching. Color charts of the top and underside of the bird and a gallery of award-winning interpretations of the bald eagle round out the collection, making it an enduring source of inspiration for artists.
