Book Description
Bird watching is America's second most popular hobby after gardening. According to a recent survey, approximately 63 million Americans report that they watch and feed birds at home. With its beautiful four-color layout, The Backyard Bird Feeder's Bible is the ideal guide for beginning to intermediate bird watchers. And author Sally Roth's reassuring and friendly voice make this book a standout among the many more academic-style bird books currently on the market. Each colorful section is arranged alphabetically and addresses birds from each region of the country-even explaining the different food requirements for birds in different regions. Roth helps readers cut the costs of their favorite activity with economical tips throughout, from buying less expensive seed like cracked corn to using food leftovers as winter treats. Readers will delight in the color photos of the most popular feeder birds and will enjoy projects for making feeders, food mixtures, and 'food crafts,' such as birdseed wreaths.

Help! He Won't Give Back My Book!.......2006-08-15
I barely got to look at the thing!
I made the mistake of allowing my young nephew to glance through it a few days ago. The next thing I know he takes it home with him and won't bring it back to me. (Well, he 'would' because he's that kind of guy... but I think I am going to allow him to keep it.)
Apparently this book had the remarkable effect of sparking in him a sudden interest in the hobby of attracting and feeding birds.
Actually, all summer long we have been visited at our little place in the country by birds of all sorts and we have been feeding them everyday so they wouldn't get bored and go away, but my nephew didn't have any interest in them... that is, not until I let him look at this book.
As I said, I did not really get to look at this book, but let's base my 5 star review on the enthusiasm it sparked in him. He says it is a great book because the information within is very interesting and very in-depth. He also loves the plentiful beautiful pictures which helps keep him attracted all the more to the subject matter.
I am very pleased that a child growing up in today's sterile electronically-obsessed society can still find something very natural and positive to invest his time and interest in. Aren't you?
EXCELLENT ADDITION TO YOUR BIRD LIBRARY.......2006-06-29
This one is just filled with excellent ideas. After years of birding you would think there would be no new ideas...wrong! I picked up quite a lot from this book. It is well organized, easy to use and easy to read and understand. I am glad I received it as a gift and recommend you get a copy if this is where your interests are. Overall, recommend this one highly.
Great Book cheaply made.......2005-12-18
The information contained in the book is great, one of the best bird books I own. To bad the publisher went the cheap way and produced a book using the hot glue binding process as opposed to a stitched binding. My copy has fallen apart!
Not well organized.......2005-12-07
I found this book to be very confusing. It is organized alphabetically... which makes no sense. There is no way to know what you need to know until you know what you need to know. It should be called the Bird book encyclopedia. A much much better book is the Audobon Backyard Birdwatcher. This book is not very colorful or engaging. I returned it.
Full of information.......2005-09-14
This book has answered so many questions for me. Reading this book is like talking with a friend who knows everything about birds and wants me to know it all too! The way it is set up alphabetically makes for an easy search and the pictures and diagrams are excellent. I will now have a more organized yard and happier birds.

In depth look at hand feeding and care of baby birds.......2005-07-10
Matthew Vriends HAND-FEEDING AND RAISING BABY BIRDS is of some use to me although I prefer Gayle Souck's PARROT BREEDER'S ANSWER BOOK. Vriend's book is not nearly as comprehensive, he goes deep whereas Soucek goes broad. However, I appreciate the detailed sections on the selection, care and maintenance of incubators including photos of the various types of incubators as well as text describing air filtration systems (`still air' and ventilation), automatic egg turners versus doing it yourself, and temperature, light and humidity considerations. Interestingly, neither author cites the other even tho Barron's produced both books and they are somewhat complementary.
As well as incubation, Vriends book covers feeding in great detail with numerous photos of very small chicks being hand fed. I like this book because I needed more in-depth information about actual feeding practices, including a discussion of the different nutritional needs of different birds who require formulas. Whether you are raising companion birds or you are an animal rehabilitator/rescuer you will probably find this book useful.
OK book.......2004-03-30
This book was OK. It talks about all pet birds, so it really only gives a little bit of information about each. If you are looking to know about handfeeding ONE certain kind of bird, then I would look for a different book. The pictures are very cute though.
Where was the editor on this book?.......2003-10-02
If you have patience, you can get a good "overview" of handfeeding pet baby birds here..
If not.. I suggest you go elsewhere.
Dr.Vriends thoughts are disorganized, self-congratulatory, and all over the place. He could of used an intelligent editor here.
Each chapter has information that is right out of the authors head-- instead of organizing laying of eggs, incubating, feeding, etc. in concise chapters. The chapters repeat lots of information. I found it very hard to follow-- trying to turn forward and back to other chapters with "sort of" the same topic.
I respect Dr. Vriends expertise on most everything...but, the points on this book are not organized.
What if you don't want to feed the baby birds when they first hatch? What if you want to socialize them while still letting the mom and dad feed? There are lots of places here where I left scratching my head-- and re-reading the convoluted syntax in this book asking "what is he trying to say here"?
This book definately is written from the standpoint of out of the incubator, into the breeders hands...
Dr. Vriends, you have more experience on this to share, don't you? Too professional a book...
A good book, but.........2001-02-06
It's a good book and easy to read, but it's more focussed on professional breeding than it is for people who just bought a bird and want more information about raising and hand-feeding. Even though it's good reading material.
A great how to on hand-feeding........2000-01-26
This book takes the novice from the very beginning. It covers every aspect of handfeeding. Concise, easy to read, with great colour pictures. I would recommend this book to the beginning handfeeder as well as those who are experienced.
Customer Reviews:
The Handfeeding Bible.......2006-04-07
If you handfeed birds or plan to this is a must have book. It's a great reference not only for general information on how to feed, but also the problems that can occur while doing so. It also details proper handling and sanitation procedures to keep disease from spreading within a flock. Small breeders may not be able to emulate all the procedures outlined in the book. Regardless, it is an excellent source of information on how an ideal facility should operate (something any size aviary should know).
For breeders who incubate their own eggs I suggest Parrot Incubation Procedures by Rick Jordan as well.
Great reference book for any experience level.......2006-02-20
This is a must have book for anyone new to breeding, and a great reference book for experienced breeders. Here are the chapter headings:
1: Managing the Nursery
2: Maintenance of Nestlings (Brooding)
3: Formulas
4: Feeding Instruments and Methods
5: Feeding
6: Weight Monitoring
7: Non-Dietary Factors That Control Weight Gain
8: Potential Health Problems in the Nursery
9: Non-Pathogenic Death
10: Medical Procedures for the Aviculturist
11: Weaning
Each chapter is packed with critical information and well documented with excellent photographs from experienced aviculturists Voren and Jordan.
good advise, well explained.......1999-01-22
This book is valuable to not only new breeders, but also to experienced breeders. Facts are explained. This book also encourages you to make changes to your existing set-up, supported by facts, rather than to let you question your own dicisions.
Book Description
A short but detailed guide to understanding the fascinating and complex lives of hummingbirds and transforming virtually any yard or garden into a hummingbird haven. Chapters cover the basic biology and behavior of these living jewels as well as how to create healthy hummingbird habitat in the home landscape, select regionally-appropriate plants for the nectar garden, select and maintain feeders, and identify 23 species of hummingbirds found in the United States and Canada. A list of books, videos, magazines, organizations, and web sites gives readers a starting point for further study.
Customer Reviews:
great information, terrific photographs.......2004-08-24
This small but information-packed guide is the best I've found for detailed, practical advice about viewing and caring for these little flying jewels. The photographs are breathtaking and the text is well-written and filled with wonderful advice and tips about feeders, habitat, gardens, identification and further resources.
Terrific.
Best little hummingbird book available.......2001-06-10
Although this gem of a book certainly covers attracting and feeding hummingbirds, including extensive advice on selecting flowers appropriate for each region of the continent, its modest size and simple title don't hint at the true gift within: an ecologist's insight into the natural history of one of our most highly-specialized and most fascinating bird families. The first 14 pages of text and photos are a concise, well-balanced examination of how hummingbirds fit into their environment, written for neither children nor scientists, but for the inquisitive layman. You won't find this content in any other book I've seen.
The second part is about plants, and again compresses a wealth of useful information into a succinct but rich overview of what flowers hummingbirds like, and why. More than a plant list, this section will help you understand how to plan a garden that works.
There are also sections on feeders, habitat, and species identification. Each is invested with an equally-impressive amount of insight, although as the author advises you'll want a good field guide for serious ID questions (and Sheri is writing one now). Finally, there's a nice listing of organizations and both printed and online resources for further study.
I have a collection of hummingbird books, assembled to help me build and maintain hummingbirds.net. This one is one of the three I wouldn't be without.

Cruel, Cruel, Cruel - Shame on Amazon for promoting this junk.......2007-08-24
I have been an Amazon customer for more than 10 years. I have decided to no longer be a customer until Amazon VOLUNTARILY removes material like this (Junk that promotes ILLEGAL activity - particularly activities involving cruelty to animals, children, or others that do not have the free will to decide their own fate)..
Appalling.......2007-08-20
Wow. I am just shocked at how some people think. This is a book on how to raise birds to tear each other apart for people's enjoyment. There are alot of horrible things in mankind's "history" but do we really need to sell books on "how to" do them? Any kind of behavior that causes torture and pain to a living creature for someone else's pleasure is sure not something I'M proud to look back on! This kind of thing makes me so ashamed to share this planet with certain other kinds of people. And I'm very very disappointed that Amazon is more interested in making money than having morals and not selling material giving "How To"s on illegal behavior.
I hope Amazon goes bankrupt.......2007-08-15
As one of the very first and most loyal customers of Amazon, I'm here to say GOODBYE. Amazon's ridiculous arguments to keep making a buck on animal cruelty ("fighting censorship" or "1st amendment rights") are ridiculous and insulting. I'll be buying all my online purchases elsewhere and to make sure Amazon knows about it, I'll forward all the purchase confirmations to Amazon -- just so the company will know exactly how much it's losing from just one ex-customer -- someone who buys EVERYTHING online.
I also plan to make it my life's work to make EVERYONE aware how low Amazon will go to make a buck. ADIOS!!!
Only because I can't give a negative rating.......2007-08-14
I am HORRIFIED that Amazon would stoop to something this morally reprehensible.
I WILL NO LONGER BUY ANYTHING FROM AMAZON until your sponsorship of anything relating to animal fighting ceases.
Furthermore, I will be informing EVERYONE I know of my decision (and the reason for it) and asking them to do the same.
Obviously your business was created to turn a profit, but ask yourself
Can a company as large Amazon afford to lose whatever revenue these items generate?
If the answer is no, ask yourself this:
Can you afford to lose the business of everyone who objects to this kind of cruelty?
Obviously you will reach your own conclusions on this matter. Just remember that we, as consumers, will do likewise
The Next Generation of the Treatise.......2007-08-10
This publication gives me an idea for a series of instructional manuals on a new gentlemen's sport that involves watching Amazon executives fight to the finish in an enclosed pit while the spectators cheer, spill popcorn, throw empty beer bottles, and exercise their first amendment right to bet on their picks to win. The series of manuals will have the same redeeming social value as this stuff that Amazon peddles.

Every facet of raising and breeding virtually any kind of duck imaginable. Both farmers and hobbyists will value this book's expert advice on general daily care and medical treatments. Close to 70 illustrations are featured, including nearly 30 in full color. Paperback / 104 Pages / / 1989
Customer Reviews:
Solid duck care book.......2007-07-24
This book would be very helpful to they inexperienced duck owner. However, I can't see it taking anyone beyond the basics, and if you own ducks at some point you will have to travel down that road. This book does give a lot of good information. It has everything from basic anatomy of the duck, to diet, housing and environmental concerns, duck behavior, raising ducks, a list on ornamental and domestic breeds, and most importantly it gives you the basics in an easy to understand format.
Having said all this this book has some weaknesses. It does not have a detailed breeds list (only a couple pages). This book does cover a lot of information in under a hundred pages, but it doesn't cover any one thing really well. I prefer Dave Holderreads book "Storey's Guide To Raising Ducks." I feel it is a superior book for both novices and experienced poultry personal. So why did I give this book 4 stars? Simply, this book does everything it can in under a hundred pages, it just doesn't do enough in my opinion. It would be a good book to start with, but you will eventually have to buy or get more information somewhere else.
Duck Handbook.......2005-08-12
Owning a pet duck is a lot different than owning a dog or cat!
This book will help you know how to house, feed and care for that cute little Easter duckling that quickly turns into a big white bundle of feathers.
If you like to feed ducks at the pond, BUY THIS BOOK!!!!.......2001-08-13
I love to go feed the ducks at the local pond. I now know what types come to the pond and why they act the way they do. This book is interesting enough for an adult, but easy enough for a child to understand. This is a WONDERFUL book. Very FUN to read.
The New Duck Handbook.......2000-03-20
This book was very helpful. It answered all my questions. It is also a very good investment because you will always have questions and it always has answers!
The New Duck Handbook.......1999-12-02
Ornamental & Domestic Ducks Everything about Housing, Care, Feeding, Diseases & breeding
Book Description
The author spent almost ten years consulting with veteranarians and doing hnads-on research to compose the 150 healthy and original recipes in this book. Poor nutrition is the #1 cause of illness and death in companion birds. According to the American Veterinary Medical Associations U.S Pet Ownership and Demographic Sourcebook for 2002, birds, are owned as pets by 4.6% of all houseeholds, and there are more than 10 million birds owned as pets in the US. This book is practically the nly one of its kind and is the first one to bring together a nutritional guide and a collection of recipes that are both nourishing and easy to make. The recipes provided are appropriate for almost all species of pet birds.
Customer Reviews:
Definately a must for bird lovers........2007-08-25
This book taught me a lot about bird nutrition. I own three different parrots with three different nutritional needs and this book described each and helped me pick those recipes that will take care of them. I learned which fruits and veggies have the proper vitamins needed for each.
I have tried several recipes at the time of this review and they did not fail to please at least one of my birds. I plan on trying many more and then I plan on foing back and altering some of the others to please the tastes of my clan.
This book is a must if you want your bird to have a great and healthy life.
Great book for all bird owners!.......2007-07-05
We raise and sell parrots and every baby goes home with this book. I think it is a wonderful book and very educational with lots of great recipes. I have had the opportunity to meet Robin and she is a great lady that has done a wonderful thing with this book! Thanks Robin!!! From the birdies at Jolley Feathers.
My birdy thanks you.......2007-05-15
My Senegal has enjoyed the foods made from this book. I feel I'm finally giving him the nutrition he needs to stay healthy.
We've been having problems with feather picking and when we ruled out exercise, toys, humidity and attention deficits one of the last things we could attribute it to was diet. Since I've started to make him varied foods from this book I've noticed a distinct change in his attitude and energy level...he just seems happier. Guess I would be too if I didn't have to eat the same thing everyday.
Anyway, thanks to the author for thinking these recipes up.
Healthy Bird Cookbook.......2007-02-20
I thought this was going to be a good recipe book but it is actually one of the best recipe books I have ever owned. It is a must have for anyone that owns birds and would like to provide them with a healthy varied diet.
I am extremely happy with this book. I highly recommend it.

-Mourning Doves mate for life-.......2002-03-28
This is one of those books that you pick up intending to find a quick answer to a specific question and, before you know what's happened, you've become wrapped up in reading several pages. The book is beautifully done, useful, and very pleasant to read.
The first section provides general information about feeding, housing and gardening for the birds. In the second section, we learn about courtship, baby birds, territory, and migration. The third section gives specific data on individual bird species, and finally, a small appendix provides lists of favorite foods, egg identification, and habitat requirements.
Here are a few bird facts that I thought were particularly interesting: Mourning Doves mate for life and are excellent parents. - The Kildeer is very unusual because they often make their nests on unpaved driveways which is confusing because the eggs look like small pieces of gravel. - The beautiful Indigo Bunting frequently uses the same nest by just making yearly repairs. - One very unpopular bird is the Brown-Headed Cowbird. They like to lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and leave all of the work and rearing to another mother. - The Winter Wren builds several nests which he shows to a possible mate for approval. The female then picks her favorite nest. Unwilling to let the other nests go to waste, he shows the remaining nests to a second female and ends up with two families.
If you enjoy feeding the birds, you'll love this book.
Makes Bringing Birds to YOU Easy.......2000-08-10
This book is a great guide to backyard birding. It's 320 pages long and the last 100 or so pages is an extensive identification chapter featuring full color drawings of each bird, a description of its range and a lengthy description of its eating habits, courtship, housing and habitat preferences. The Appendix is one of the most useful parts of the book - it includes charts listing each bird's egg color and size, housing each bird will accept, migration patterns and food preferences for the birds. This book ensures you will get the birds you want, when you want - it even tells which birds may interbreed and how to avoid quarreling among feisty songbirds. It includes low-budget solutions to most of the "high-cost" bird expenses, and explains in great detail the proper storage of food. This book is undoubtedly the best resource birders have for attracting yard birds. Although the females in each species could be shown in better detail - only in the cases in which the sexes are drastically different are the females shown, - it is still an excellent resource from experienced "backyard birders". If you plan on attracting, feeding and nesting birds, get this book. Your success is assured.
Backyard Bird-Lover's Guide.......2000-05-05
Fun and exciting - this book will show you the 3 essentials your yard needs to become a favorite with as wide a variety of birds that is possible for your area. I especially liked it's format, simple and easy to follow, it takes you through planning/planting, feeding stations, the best food for each bird - and you're ready to sit back and enjoy your backyard habitat! An updated replacement for my old standby book, The Backyard Bird Watcher by George Harrison.
Book Description
Learn from FeederWatcher Experts How to Feed and Attract Birds
Join Margaret Barker on a fascinating tour of FeederWatcher's backyards and bird feeders. Margaret captures the joy in the FeederWatcher's words as they explain how to attract the finches you've seen down the road, how to discourage the flock of Starlings you'd really rather went elsewhere, and how to live peacefully with squirrels and raccoons. You'll discover which birds you can attract and which ones will return year after year.
Each winter thousands of FeederWatchers identify birds attracted to their yards and record data about them. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology compiles the data into the largest existing database on backyard birds. No one has more hard facts on backyard birds than the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and no one knows more about attracting birds than the FeederWatchers.
FeederWatchers are participants in Project FeederWatch, a joint research and education project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, Bird Studies Canada, and the Canadian Nature Federation.

I need all the help I can get!.......2007-05-24
This is a fun book if you're trying how to make happy residents of the birds in your yard. It's practical, real world advice from people who are experts at the work to help and track our feathered friends.
Fantastic.......2007-03-10
I picked this book up not thinking it was going to be much but I was totally wrong. This book is chocked full of info on feeding, feeders, pretty much every North American bird that would ever visit your feeder, full color pictures and even a few recipes!
I would definately recommend this book to anyone wanting to get to know more about their feathered friends. A kick arse book!
Very helpful, but somewhat limited........2004-06-18
This is a great book for anyone interested in learning about the birds who visit our backyard feeders. There are some good tips here--what types of feeders to select, what types of food to offer, how much cover is needed, etc. There is also a wonderful section on how to tell the difference between diffferent breeds of birds that look very similar, i.e. the House Finch and Purple Finch. Quite a bit of the book includes interviews with backyard feeder enthusiasts from different sections of the USA. I was pleased to see one from a town that is very close to my own.
The second half of the book lists, with photographs and commentary, the 50 most frequent visitors to backyard bird feeders in the USA. I really wish the list had included the top 100 (or more!) birds, as I'm often seeing birds at my feeders that are not on the list. Also, in some cases, there is only one picture of the named bird, and I much prefer it when there is a picture of both the male and female of the species in question.
It seems like I'm grabbing this book a lot though, so it has been quite a help to me.
BEST BIRD BOOK FOR ME.......2001-07-21
THIS BOOK IS EASY TO READ AND UNDERSTAND. I KEEP IT BY ME WHEN I AM WATCHING THE BIRDS AT MY FEEDERS OR IN MY YARD. A VERY EXCELLENT BOOK.
the feeder watchers guide to bird feeding.......2001-02-15
Although this is a very attractive book with good size beautiful detailed pictures of birds, I was disappointed to discover that even though it is sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, it is not really " comprehensive ". For exanple it does not mention ospreys at all which nest in good numbers in my area. It briefly mentions bob whites which nest in my area, but there are no pictures of this bird or feeding information. There are many similar ommisions and some of the feeding information is limited and not always creative. For a newly published book of this type, I expected it to be " more state of the art ".
