Hands down, the best foaling attendant book.......2007-07-22
As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.
Good information, but..........2007-05-15
I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.
Great Book....Answered lots of questions.......2007-03-26
This book was shipped quickly and just in time....I had about 5 reading days before my first foal was born. I highly recommend this book to all breeders.
The Complete Book Of Foaling.......2007-02-11
Very informative book~! I have been foaling out mares for over 12 years and I learned quite a bit of information that I did not already realize~! An A+ book to have on hand~!
A gift for my Father.......2007-02-08
My Father liked the book very much. Could not stop reading it. He is buying a copy for my brother who actually does the foaling at the horse farm.
Book Description
There has never been a truly authoritative, practical and comprehensive guide to bits and bit combinations available to the rider and horse-owner, a vacancy which has been highlighted by the recent renewed interest in a more thoughtful approach to bitting and its effect on the horse. With regular reports in the equestrian media of horses transformed by the change of a bit, and how a particular top name in the sport has successfully converted a horse to a new type, the equestrian world will welcome this thorough work by respected expert Elwyn Hartley Edwards.
The author give details of every known bit in the world, with photographs and working diagrams to show how each group works. Covering everything from the simple snaffle to the Western bosal, it is totally international in content and approach. Elwyn provides a fascinating insight into the history of the bit and explores the latest developments in design and manufacture, with details of subsidiary tackle and bitting for different sports and activities.

Excellent reference material!.......2007-07-31
FINALLY a complete look at horse bits and practices from the beginning of horsemanship through today. A necessary book for every serious horse person's library - this is one we will come back to again and again I'm sure. Includes excellent photos and diagrams of the different bits and hackamores et al with explanations of how and WHY each piece works. While the author does have some disapproving tones at times, so what? It's his book and thus his voice after all. As long as the information is accurate and clearly given that is all the matters.
great book.......2007-05-08
This is an awesome book for anyone who wants to learn more about bits. The pictures are great, and the book includes some history as well. It's also very easy to read, especially for the type of book it is.
"For the Novice and the Experienced Rider".......2006-09-03
....since getting back into riding the English discipline after a break that lasted quite a few years, I was surprised when I discovered just how much technical information had slipped my mind. Since the art of bitting was at the top of my list for my about-to-be new horse, I eagerly awaited its arrival and was not disappointed. The book opens with a chapter about the evolution of the bit, then concisely describes the many bits, the variations thereof, how they feel to the horse and how to determine the best choice for your equine companion. This information far exceeded the expectations I had when I first submitted my order. Bits & Bitting helped to re-acquaint me with this very important piece of tack! The pages speak to the novice in laymans terms and also to the experienced rider that may be looking to change his or her horse's bit.
A must read for aspiring horse professionals........2006-07-24
I bought this book with the hopes in mind to learn about the different types of bits. I didn't just want to know what they were called, but also what purpose they served. I felt that this book was a good start to my understanding bitting. I found the author, Elwyn Hartley Edwards, to be absoutely entertaining with his side comments; he stated his opinions, but without taking away from the facts, which is something one must admire with his British humor.
Thorough Study of the Subject.......2006-03-15
This is a very thorough study of bits and their application. It covers the history of the bit and theory behind its use. Rein effects are clearly and concisely explained (easier to demonstrate than to write about) and the horse's anatomy regarding the cause and effect of bit/bridle pressure is illustrated brilliantly to help the rider understand the effect of proper cues on the entire horse.
The book emphasizes proper application of all riding cues, specifically how the bit reinforces information already relayed to the horse through the seat and legs.
The illustrations are very well done and complement the book nicely.
This book could benefit the beginner, but it is so thorough that it really fits into the intermediate skill level. The depth of information could easily overwhelm a beginning rider who is still struggling with basic skills.
My assessment of the author's writing is that it is witty and at points humorous, in the dry manner of which the British are famous. I never felt the author was pompous or "angry sounding." It seemed to me the author is a true expert in this field and was laying out the information including his "expert opinion." I appreciated his opinions and felt the book would not have been nearly as informative without them.
I almost did not buy this book based on the previous reviewer's comments. I'm glad that I bought it and once I started reading it, I found it flowed smoothly from cover to cover. My knowledge and skills are the better for it.

Horse handbook & Toy .......2007-07-04
Hi all, the book itsef is very very good. It helps introducing the horse world vocabulary...which usually we do not use a lot. However the toy is not good quality. Arrived already broken and if you hit even not so strong it breaks. My son was a bit disapointed with this but liked the book.
Real information and a Real Cute Horse.......2007-05-30
This is a nice little package for a kid old enough to read for info and adept enough to manipulate craft materials. Beautifully designed, the little soft cover book gives some real and ueseful information about the nature of horses. The package is charming, will romance any horse-loving young person and sneak in some horse-reality at the same time.
My very own horse book.......2007-03-08
The book comes with a plastic horse. The horse had an ear broke off and a scratch on the body when it arrived.

Excellent.......2007-09-25
When I bought this book I honestly didn't think I'd ever read it, let alone read the entire thing. But I gave it a try and now I can't put it down. The advice she gives is very helpful and really lets me know what I'm going to have to do when I buy my own horse. This book really opened my eyes and has prepared me for someday becoming an experienced horsehandler. Cheryl Kimball does a wonderful job with this book!

Excellant and fully descriptive. My daughter wants to be a horse handler and has had not experience with horses this is a great book that gives a complete guide for beginners.
Excellant service, communication and packaging. Have bought many books and would not hesitate to buy more.
it's ok..........2006-08-14
When i first got this book i thought it was going to be much better. I thoroughly enjoyed it however. I am 14 years old and when i passed it down to my younger sister (who is 10) to read, she got bored really easily with it. It might be because she is just the type of person who bores easily, but there really is no motavation for someone of her age. there are very little pictures and is not written in a way which younger people understand
Very good guide for caring for a horse.......2004-09-14
This is a good book for the person who doesn't own a horse yet but would like to sometime. It is very complete, going over stuff from hoof anatomy to how to introduce your horse to an electric fence for the first time. However, I think that Horses for Dummies by Audrey Pavia is even MORE complete and I liked that better, but overall this is a very, very good book.
A pretty good book...........2001-12-16
I think this is a great book for someone who owns a horse. Since I don't yet own one, I found it not as interesting as some horse books. It talks about trailering your horse, what to feed it, ect.... I still enjoyed it though, because I really like reading anything on horses. And someday since I'll be owning a horse someday (I hope!!), I think this book will come in handy. :)

The Complete Guide to Horses.......2005-05-13
This Complete Guide by Mary Gordon Watson is for any horse-loving person. It is filled with lots of facts such as how the horse functions and moves, many of the diseases they come in contact with, and much more! If you want to know how to care for a horse or need information about buying one, this is the one to choose. It tells you what to look for such as weight, vices, temperament, correct symmetrical proportions, etc. The fantastic pictures range from small to large and are all in color! Also, they really bring the horses to life and help you to better understand the descriptions. This is an awesome book and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves horses!
Perfect beginner book on the horse.......2004-12-10
I personally own this book and plan to purchase another one to give as a gift to a lady who runs a riding stable. She teaches younger riders and beginner adults. It is a nice addition to her library. It's beautifully done with prints, photographs, and general information on the breeds, different sports, health and care of the noble animal we know as the horse. If this is a consideration for purchase, I rate this as an excellent buy.
Excellent overview for the novice.......2001-09-02
Although no one area is covered in any great depth, it provides enough general knowledge to point the reader in the right direction for further research. General areas include basic physio information, care, tack ,feeding, health issues and diseases, an overview of various equestrian disciplines, and probably the most comprehensive (and well photographed) listing of known breeds with brief descriptions of each.
My 11 yr.-old daughter (new horse owner) was given a copy for her birthday last year and it is almost in tatters from constant use!
Very complete.......2001-01-02
This is a very complete book on horses. My daughter has spent much time pouring over it.
