Hands down, the best foaling attendant book.......2007-07-22
As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.
Good information, but..........2007-05-15
I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.
Great Book....Answered lots of questions.......2007-03-26
This book was shipped quickly and just in time....I had about 5 reading days before my first foal was born. I highly recommend this book to all breeders.
The Complete Book Of Foaling.......2007-02-11
Very informative book~! I have been foaling out mares for over 12 years and I learned quite a bit of information that I did not already realize~! An A+ book to have on hand~!
A gift for my Father.......2007-02-08
My Father liked the book very much. Could not stop reading it. He is buying a copy for my brother who actually does the foaling at the horse farm.

GREAT PURCHASE.......2007-07-12
Product was in great condition and very informative. I am looking to buy more books by this author. Great buy and good price for amount of education it brings.
Great Resource.......2007-05-13
This book was a required purchase for a recent home practitioners course in equine Acupressure and Photonic Acupoint Therapy. I find that I am using and refering to charts from this book several times a week. It is a fantastic resource that is easy to read, easy to understands and is very helpful. After major bodywork on a horse recently I showed the book to our equine physiotherapist while we were working out the horse's treatment plan until his next visit to the horse and he thoroughly approved of my proposed treatment plan according to the charts in the book. Not just an endorsement of the quality of the information from myself and the lecturers, but also from our own equine physiotherapist.
Great.......2007-01-10
I bought this book for my girlfriend and she said that if she didn't have it she never would have passed some of her college equine acupressure classes last quarter. If she didn't have this book she said that there was no way that she would have ever gotten certified
Great assistance to energy work.......2005-10-12
A good reference book for those in an equine therapy role.
good introduction.......2004-11-12
This is an interesting and well written book on equine acupressure, and also the only on the market! Very clear and simple explanation on TCM (traditional chinese medicine) and principles behind it all.
On the other hand, the drawings are too vague to actually locate the points on your horse. They tell you to "feel it" but it isn't enough! They give you "recipes" of points for different conditions which can be fun to try but may be disapointing if you expect results. In TCM, there in not a pill or recipe for each disease like in western thinking.
Overall, an excellent introduction to the subject, but makes you hungry for more!

Customer Reviews:
great refresher course!.......2006-07-30
I purchased this book to become reacquainted with equine reproduction after spending a year in equine practice without reproduction. The text was direct, succinct, and well-versed without extra details that come with other in-depth textbooks. There are many pictures and diagrams, though I would have preferred to see more present. Overall, I feel that the Manual is a great refresher course for veterinarians and equine reproduction specialists. However, I would not recommend this book as the sole text while learning equine reproduction for the first time.
Not a good book.......2004-02-11
This book is for the very advanced. It uses all medical terminology and is very basic with details. They assume it is for vet students. There is no glossary and there are highlighted words that they never explain. It is pure awful!!!!
Manual of Equine Reproduction.......2000-02-24

This book covers in absolute detail, the step by step format of every situation that would or could occur during the 15 to 18 month period that leads from conception to post foaling management. This is a book that every farm manager as well as the weekend horse breeder should have access to 24 hours a day.

The Complete Equine Veterinarian Manual.......2007-01-06
I really liked the first 2 sections, Keeping your horse healthy and the Anatomical Index of Diseases. I wish the A-z sections describing different disease was a little more in-depth. Its a little more general than I wanted but still a very very knowledgable book.
A Horse Lovers Must.......2000-08-11
This book is very detailed with diseases, illnesses, cut, fractures, snake bites and more. I like to take care of my horse when I can and not take her to the vet except after she foals. I like to give the shots and do what I can. This book is very detailed and very helpful.
The Complete Equine Veterinary Manual.......2000-05-12

Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2005-09-20
I was expecting the invaluable resource that the small animal version is, but I agree with other reviewers: it seems very disorganized. It also seems lacking in many pathological conditions that are, as they say, "not uncommon"...I would rather use the Rose and Hodgson field guide any day...
poor version.......2004-07-05
Even though this book is well written and concise, it is a poor version compared to the small animal compendiums. The layout is unorganised and there are many conditions that are missed. Also there is no drug formulary in the back which was a major advantage of the small animal versions

Good Quick Referance.......2005-12-30
Working as a riding Instructor and manager or a riding school this is a great book to have as a quick and easy referance.
It does not go into any great detail but explains most things that may happen to a horse.
It has lots of photos and this is great when you are trying to explain to students what each illness ect. is and what it looks like.
Overall a good book for any horse riders collection
maybe 4 stars, more a quick reference than comprehensive.......2005-04-26
This was one of those books that I had a quick flick through at first and thought it was rather light in content. On second reading there was indeed a mention of 'every illness' and the front section had excellent diagrams on physiology and anatomy - including the nervous system which is often not included in anatomy diagrams.
The book itself is in several sections, which makes it a little repetitive. The main portion of the book is dedicated to categorising various illnesses into 'effects' i.e. "Digestive system" or "Legs \ Lameness" etc There are tables of illnesses and injuries that can affect these areas and plenty of photos (this isn't a book for the kiddies or the weak of stomach).
Next is a section which goes through things alphabetically and finally there is a section which I didn't think really fitted into this type of guide, which had various protocols and processes which may be useful for studs or barn owners when dealing with various illnesses.
Because of the repetition - by area and then alpha - I didn't think that the topics received as much indepth coverage as perhaps I had wanted - the information on treatments, drug protocols etc was rather light IMHO. Although this cross-referencing system is designed to help you to work out what is wrong with your horse, I'd much rather that it was assumed that any serious illnesses would be diagnosed by your vet and that this would then be a reference for dealing with illness and injury at home and for helping owners to talk intelligently with their vet about available treatments.
Overall a handy book to have and certainly one that I will use for reference from time to time but I don't know that it warrants the subtitle "A comprehensive guide to Horse Health"
