accurate info!.......2007-06-09
This book answered all of the questions I had when I found myself the unexpected owner of a hedgie. Questions on food and weight maitenence, exercise, vet care, disease, toenail clipping, socialization and more were answered for me. Mail-order resources were also listed, which was a good spring board for finding the supplies I needed on the internet.
The Best!.......2004-09-07
Required reading for all hedgehog owners! This book was written by a successful, knowledgeable, hedgehog breeder and her vet. They know their stuff. The information is accurate, helpful and fun to read.
The Best!.......2003-06-10
Dawn's book was one that i happened upon while looking for information on having a hedgehog as a pet. As I did more research I found so many books available that have potentially deadly information in them.
I found several breederes in the USA that will not sell a hedgehog to a new person before they have read this book. It is an easy read, with good information. It also has very cute pictures. If you think you want a hedgehog, READ THIS BOOK FIRST!!
The best book available on the market........2001-09-20
Hedgehogs are still considered "fad" pets by many, and several of the books available on the market today reflect that by providing information that treats these charming, intelligent animals as disposable pets. Dawn's book systematically goes through most aspects of hedgehog care, speaking with expert knowledge and true affection for these animals. A novice hedgehog owner, or someone considering bringing one home for the first time, will get a lot of valuable information from this book.
I highly recommend.
Wonderful book, even for experienced owners.......2001-03-22
This book had a lot of great information, especially considering it was published in 95. There was a lot of information that even experienced hedgie owners will find useful. There is background/history information on the hedgehog that I hadn't read before. Well written and a good book overall.

Rabbit lovers will find themselves turning to this guide time and again for simple, practical advice on living with and caring for their rabbit family members. By Audrey Pavia. Hardcover, 126 pgs.
Customer Reviews:
healthy & happy rabbits need to be altered.......2003-05-26
Urban rabbits must be spayed or neutered. Not only is it safer and healthier for the rabbit, it will also help prevent overpopulation of rabbits, which results in needless suffering and euthanisia of innocent rabbits. The person who said rabbits' skin is too thin to support stitches is TOTALLY misinformed. The surgery is successfully performed around the country on a daily basis on house rabbits. Please, please read as much material as you can on rabbits before purchasing. Please get one from a shelter and not from pet stores.
One Great Book!.......2001-07-22
Out of my "library" of about 10 rabbit books, this is one of them that I thumb through often. Being an experienced rabbit owner, I'm not in bad need of information, but this is just a joy to read. There are lots of interesting pictures, of our floppy eared furry friends, and loads of information. A must for a "newbie" to the bunny world!
And, regarding the ignorant person who posted the comment about altering a rabbit, it is perfectly safe for rabbits to be altered. In fact, it is safer to have them altered than to not (due to testicular and uterine cancer). I'm sorry that you've been misinformed.
this was very helpful.......2001-06-14
the person who said that they should not be spayed or newtered is wrong, very wrong, if you look at the title it says FOR A HAPPY, HEALTHY PET! not for rabbit breeders, o well he/she is entitled to her/his opinion. but i found this book very good and it started my love for rabbits. it is very descripted and i hope you love it too.
A decent starter book on house rabbits.......1999-09-08
I had to laugh at the previous review, which stated that rabbits should not be spayed! Tell that to the millions of rabbits spayed in the past 11 years since the House Rabbit Society was formed! Assuming a vet experienced with rabbits, this is now a fairly routine surgery, and it saves lives and leads to happier rabbits.
That said, Ms. Pavia's book, while not House Rabbit Handbook (my #1 recommendation), is pretty good. There are a few problems with it, but overall it's a good introduction, and far better than the breeder-based books out there.
about pet rabbits only.......1999-08-28
It did not help me with breeding. It said that you should spay you rabbit, that is incorect info. You should never spay a rabbit or do any other sugery on them, because their skin is to fin and silky to hold stiches and then it rips.

Customer Reviews:
An informative book.......2002-02-07
This is a useful guide for those who either want to keep mice as pets or just to learn about them. It was released in 2000, and Stephanie Shulman is the author. According to the backcover, she has raised mice for over ten years. There are 125 pages that consist of 11 chapters. The color photos of the mice are good; also, there is a color drawing of a mouse that displays its external features. History of the mouse, anatomy, gestation and babies, senses, health, handling, housing, feeding, selection of the mouse, and varieties are examples of topics discussed. Helpful sidebars are included. I find this to be a worthy publication.
not a very resourceful book.......2002-01-02
Before getting my pets, I have looked up information on the internet and got a pretty good understanding, but I wanted a book as a handy reference. This book was rather disappointing because it doesnot offer much more than the internet: too much unimportant information (mickey mouse!), and not enough about mouse behavior, how to handle different medical problems such as taking care of pregnant mouse and her pups etc. I do not recommend this book.
Not quiet what I expected.......2001-02-05
I thought I was buying a book that had real information about pet mice. Instead it told me about Mickey Mouse, Mighty Mouse, Tom and Jerry (I'm not lieing pages and pages were devoted to cartoon characters) and the was but a 1/4 page column on breeding. NO genetics, it only tells you what you can find out on the internet. Let me put it this way: For first time pet owners, or children ages 7-15, this is probably the book they need. But, for me, the experienced mouse breeder, I was looking for genetic information. There are lots of pictures, but not of individual colors or coat types, per afrma (american fancy rat and mouse association) standards. This book shows something about how to distinguish male and female mice, something even the pet-shop employees too often don't know. It also goes in depth to feeding, housing, selecting, showing your mouse, and even to what to do to your mouse when you take a vacation. To bring it to an end, if you are a first time or even a second or third time mouse owner, or thinking of getting a mouse (they are much better than a hamster) buy this book. If you want genetic information, or lists of standards, search elsewhere. Thank you.

Book Description
This is our sixth set of Happy, Healthy Pet titles. Like the others, they are books pet owners can turn to for the essential information they need to raise a healthy pet.
All books contain information on:
- feeding
- housing
- grooming
- health care
- what to expect from the pet
- basic training.
As our series expands and focuses on different kinds of pets, the emphasis remains on making the pet a companion. In addition, owners of more unusual pets will particularly appreciate the expert advice in these books because professional care for their animals may be difficult to come by. As always, the instruction is from expert—people who know their pet intimately, but also remember what it was like to have one for the first time.
Happy, Healthy Pet guides are rich with professional quality color photos and are designed to be enjoyable and easy to learn from.

Repetitive manual........2004-07-15
The Essential Hamster is practically complete redundancy of Barron's Complete Manual on Hamsters. Though excellent in detail, helpful information, and photographs, this is a waste of money if you already own other manuals on this pet. Typical of this type of book, it covers: Feeding, keeping your pet healthy, behavior, medical issues, and the homecoming preparation tips after purchasing a new hamster. There is absolutely nothing new and interesting added to the "Essential" series. If you own it, fine. However, if you seek detailed, new, interesting, and superior all around material, purchase the Barron's Complete Manual on hamsters instead of this.
great book.......2003-04-27
It was a great book but there should have been a section on breeding your hamster but it did give the info you need to keep you hamster healthy.
An Excellent Hamster Book.......2002-03-19
I have owned hamsters for over a year now and have read quite a few books and websites about the cute little pets. In the last few months I have become bored with the same old stuff in all the books - most, however, have adorable pictures that make up for it, but nevertheless I hoped to find one with new information. Then - behold! - I picked up this book. A very attractive, well-made and well-written book, it is filled with new, interesting and useful info. I actually learned something from "The Hamster: An Owner's Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet"! On almost every page there is a wonderful color photo of a hamster (or, in some cases, hamsterS). I would reccommend this book to first-time hamster owners as well as the more experienced kind who are looking for new, complete information.
A helpful book.......2002-01-29
If you are interested in becoming familiar with and keeping hamsters as pets, then this is a good book. Released in 1997, it was written by Betsy Sikora Siino and is 126 pages. There are ten chapters along with informative sidebars throughout. Examples of information are physical characteristics, housing, feeding, and health. Besides a color drawing that outlines the external features of a hamster, the rest of the guide contains nice color photos. I recommend this book.
Perfect for beginners.......2001-10-21
This Book is great for the beginner hamster owner.it has chapters on the origins of the hamster, buying your hamster and its home, feeding, handling, and playing with your hamster. It covers all the basics to owning a hamster. It has a very good section on illnesses and how to handle them a section most begginer books really lack in.overall it is the best basic hamster care book I have found on the market.

Customer Reviews:
It said they sleep at night!.......2005-02-12
I got this book from the library after my mouse died. I wanted a hamster but we got this too to see which one sounded best. I saw that this book says gerbils sleep at night. We decided to get gerbils. I got two named Acorn and Daisy.
But they do not sleep at night! They keep me awake when they are upstairs. I read another book and it said that gerbils like to stay up around midnight! I go to sleep at 11:00 on weekends and the gerbils wake me up.
This book was wrong about gerbils sleeping at night. I did like the pictures, though. I don't know if there is anything else that isn't true because I didn't read the whole book.
The best book for a gerbil owner!.......2001-05-24
This book so far I think si one of the best gerbil books I have read so far. The book is filled with detailed color photos and descriptions. The book also contains valuable gerbil care, housing, and other information which can be useful to ownersin times of need. This book is definately a must for every gernil owners out there. :)
