Customer Reviews:
Typically Three Dogs Bakery Book.......2007-08-14
This book is good for personal use only. Many of the recipies I may not even use due to the extravagant work or ingredients. It's not a book to purchase if you are trying to start a bakery for pets, though.
Give your dog reason to smile.......2007-05-13
I have been concerned about commercial dog food for awhile and the last rash of poisonings caused me to take action.
Bought this book and I am cooking my way through it and my dog, Bailey, is one happy pup. This book along with other information about making your own healthy dog food has been the answer for me.
3 Dog Bakery.......2007-01-05
I only use a couple of recipes out of this book, most of them are more complex than what I was looking for.
Doggy-pleasin'.......2005-12-31
Great recipes, with easy-to-find ingredients. Simple to make, and my pup loves it. But the recipes tend to make a good portion of food, so if you have only one dog, as I do, make sure you use the food as "treats" and don't overfeed your dog, or you're liable to have one chunky dog. I keep a stash of these homemade treats in the fridge for training. Great book!
Lots of share-your-dinner recipes.......2005-11-04
This book has many recipes that I can't ever see using. Many are meals to share with your dog. I'm uncomfortable with that.
The cookie recipes are OK, but not terrific, like I'd expected.

Couldn't be more pleased with this book - it has great recipes, tips, and nutritional information on ingredients.
The Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook: Homemade Goodies for Man's Best Friend .......2007-09-28
There are lots of easy, healthy, fun to make dog treats with things you already have in your cabinets. It was worth buying and I am very happy to have it on my bookshelf.
A little ruff!!!!.......2007-07-18
this book has a good selection of recipes but they are complicated and use ingredients like dried milk powder etc... the handy hints are good but some of the ingredients put me off making them.
Good book...Not exactly what I was looking for.......2007-07-13
This book uses a lot of "pre-made" ingredients (dog kibble, cereal, pancake mix) in the recipes, if that is what you are looking for than this is the book for you.
Drooling Doggie.......2007-05-15
My dog has just loved what I've made so far. The only fault with the book is having to do conversions (being from Oz)and finding the equivilent of the prepared bicuit bases, but I have and now we are on our way.
Some of Harley's mates also liked what I made! And yes he did sit next to me and drool!

Book Description
Cooper Gillespie, an extremely intelligent and handsome Welsh springer spaniel, is a dog of discriminating taste and strong opinions. Now Cooper, with the assistance of cookbook author Sally Sampson and the transcription services of his favorite human, Susan Orlean, has put together 50 delectable recipes for snacks, meals, and treats for your canine companion.
Maybe you're cooking everything because your collie has colitis or your Akita has a wheat allergy or your older dog just isn't thriving on commercial kibble. Maybe you're mixing up the occasional biscuit or treat to help your best fur-bearing friend over that I-just-ate-a-tennis- ball-and-don't-feel-so-good episode. Whatever the reason, the recipes in this book (which have been approved by dog trainer and nutritional consultant Stacy Alldredge) will satisfy the most discerning doggie palate. Many of them, in fact, can be shared with a favorite human (though preferably not from the same dish).
Illustrated with more than 50 endearing black-and-white photographs of Cooper and friends by Cami Johnson, and liberally seasoned with stories, quotes, and nutrition tips, Throw Me a Bone makes a dog's dinner something to look forward to.
Customer Reviews:
Lip Smacking and Tail Wagging!!.......2004-09-08
Of all the home made treats I have cooked up so far, the recipies from this book actually get my little doggy to do commands before being asked in the hopes of getting a tasty morsel. I packed a kong full of little bits and pieces from a couple different recipies and for the first time my little doggy made 'yummy' noises while he worked to get out the treasures. My doggy is very finicky, and has given two paws up for each batch made- I HIGHLY reccommend these recipies!!!
Beautiful Book.......2004-03-08
Cooper Gillespie, an adorable Springer Spaniel, is quite the food connoisseur. With a help from his owner, Sally Sampson, he's put together 50 recipes for dogs, his favorite dog related quotes, and photographs. The book was beautiful and well written, but its recipes are high in fat and are not nutritious to a dog. For a treat served scarcely, these recipes are divine to a dog's taste buds.
Great Pictures, but skip the recipes.......2003-12-28
Though I throughly enjoyed the photographs in the book and the writing style, and highly advise people to take control of their canine's (and feline's, for that matter) diet, I wasn't particularly enthused by the recipes in this book.
Often excessively high in fat, and regardless of the nutritionist involved in the recipes, these foods will improve your dogs mood, but not his overall health. The best diet for a dog is obtained through a balanced diet of phosphorus to calcium (protein to bone) comparable to what dogs would have eaten in the wild. Although certainly heads and tails above kibble (as is almost anything), I felt that this book didn't give enough information or research into the nutrition requirements of dogs.
To get the best information, and certianly if you're going to go to the trouble of preparing foods for your dog, then I suggest any of a plethora of books on the subject. "Give your dog a Bone" by Ian Billinghurst, or any of Billinghurst's books, Natural Nutrition for Cats and Dogs by Kymythy R. Schultze, or Raw Meaty Bones Promote Health by Tom Lonsdale. Any of these books will help you plan an effective road to health for your dog without catering to the coffeetable book set. (Although I still LOVED the pictures in this book)
Great recipes.......2003-12-11
I'm giving this dog cookbook the full 5 stars, even though I'm getting rather sick of books "written" by people's pets. The photographs are worth the price alone, but the recipes are fabulous and healthful. There's also a Table of Equivalents included in the back. There are also marvelous quotations sprinkled throughout of famous people's feelings about dogs.
I'm giving this book as a gift, too.
Perfect!!!.......2003-11-27
Between the recipes, photography, quotes and writing, this book is a perfect gift for anyone interested in dogs. I have tried a few recipes, mostly notably Goldies cupcakes and the tuna training treats, both of which my dog LOVED. Even if i never cook anything else (although i will), i love just looking at this book. It makes me laugh.

Customer Reviews:
I love Three Dog Bakery.......2007-07-03
I love what these guys have done with the dog treat industry. This book had more of a story to it rather than just recipes.
Canine Cuisine.......2005-09-08
I saw a show on Food Network about the Three Dog Bakery and found out about their cookbook. I have 4 dogs, a sheltie, a toy pomeranian, a st.bernard/retriever mix, and a "heinz 57", they all love it when I spend the day in the kitchen cooking. My favorite form of relaxation !! There is an invisible line they do not cross between the dining room and the kitchen, so all 4 will sit at the line and wait for a treat... they don't really understand but now they get a lot more treats than before and it only took a couple of times with the new "doggie treat" jar for them to all sit, with tails wagging and tongues hanging out waiting for the dog friendly and healthy treats... The treats are easy to make, most of the ingredients are readily available in my kitchen and they store well... I collect cookbooks and this one has moved to a prominent place on the shelf...
Interesting only if you want to start a similar firm.......2004-12-21
This book is mostly an entrepreneurial autobiograhy, interesting only if you want to start a similar firm or know the owners personally. The writing style is annoyingly self-congratulatory. There are only a handful of recipes. If you have a bit of baking skill, you can easily come up with better ones on your own. My dog and I received this book as a gift along with some treats from the Three Dog Bakery. The treats were great; the book is not. I wouldn't recommend it as a gift.
Great entrepreneurial yarn.......2003-10-25
Like everyone else, I loved the story of this family, men and dogs, and how they came to build their business. It was a true American entrepreneurial tale, and I'm glad they've had success. The descriptions of the dogs were also compelling.
I have to admit, though, that I've tied several of the recipes, and my dog never cared much for the results. The ginger snaps in particular seemed inedible to him. I've made many other dog biscuits for him using recipes from other places and out of the newspaper that sent him over the moon.
If you don't plan to use the recipes, I highly recommend this book. It is a wonderful story and well written.
What an inspirational story!.......2003-07-17
I really liked this book and have read it twice. Some parts of it were humorous. In short, I recommend this book to all dog lovers and owners!

made us all laugh.......2007-10-10
Got this book today and loved it. Was reading it over breakfast to my husband and my Mum. We were all laughing - the perfect was to start a way! Think I'll be getting more to give as presents.
GREAT!!!!! .......2007-04-12
Bought this a couple years ago as a Christmas gift for my father, although I must have read through it myself 20 times. We have a Golden also. This book is exceptionally funny as well as touches on the true meaning of the Christmas holiday. A great "stocking stuffer" for everyone!
Cute, but not a lot of substance.......2007-03-26
This is a Christmas book written by editor Dean Koontz' dog Trixie. Cute, is about the best word to use here with this book. It's a children's book focusing on how a dog perceives Christmas. Some of it's funny, and being a dog lover I could relate. But really, there is not a lot of substance to this book. Koontz has done much better children's books.
You gotta love this dog.......2007-02-22
This book is cute, funny, and so "goldenish", I could swear my own dog (a Golden) wrote it. Trixie is a goddess!
A Christmas treat.......2007-01-10
As the mom of two Golden Retrievers I am biased in favor of Trixie. I received this book as a gift at the same time that I found that my cat of 13 years had terminal cancer. The warm, sweet tone of this book was a great comfort to me; I kept it at my desk and read it when I needed a distraction. I also gave five copies of this book as Christmas gifts, with great feedback.
This book is about Christmas, and does have some Christian overtones, such as a couple of specific mentions of Jesus, which might make it inappropriate for some. With that single caveat, very highly recommended.

Hit-and-miss recipes.......2005-11-04
Some recipes are really good (Salmon Balls, Peanut Butter Bites), but others aren't. Some have so much oil in them that the treats are, well, oily.
Some recipes are just a variation on others--substitute turkey for chicken and you have a whole new entry in the book.
One recipe--chicken and cheese biscuits--contains NO CHEESE whatsoever.
Many recipes contain cornmeal.
Healthy Treats.......2005-08-07
Nutritious, yummy snacks for my dog and great gifts for her friends. Ingredients that are on hand in the cupboard. Much less expensive than the dog bakery that's 20 miles from my home.

Book Description
The first book to examine the environmental, dietary, and lifestyle-related causes of cancer in pets and to assess the full spectrum of treatments--both alternative and conventional.
• Foreword by Gary Kowalski, author of The Souls of Animals.
• Cancer is the leading killer of cats and dogs, but this book explains that it is often preventable.
• Includes research on dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, and guinea pigs.
• A valuable resource for all pet owners, whether their animals are still healthy or not.
Cancer is now the number one killer of most domestic animals. This fact raises a fearsome specter for those who know how confusing and painful it can be to endure the course of this disease in their pets. Having lost four animal companions to cancer, author Deborah Straw became frustrated by the lack of concrete knowledge about the causes, prevention, and treatment of cancer in pets. This thorough and comprehensive guide to every aspect of the disease in animals is the result of her search for answers.
Readers will discover the many environmental, dietetic, and vaccine-related culprits that may cause cancer in pets, and they'll learn preventive measures that can be taken to safeguard their pets' well-being. Should your animal's diagnosis be confirmed, the full spectrum of both conventional and alternative treatments is presented, from chemotherapy and laser surgery to herbal therapy, acupuncture, and touch therapy. Readers will find information about both caring for a sick animal and grieving its loss. Full of knowledge, options, and support, this is an essential resource for protecting your pet.
Customer Reviews:
Good Start, but you'll need to buy additional books.......2003-03-03
I found the book easy to read and full of facts which served as a basis for me to expand my research. It is one of the better books I have read on dog cancer and alternative treatments. A positive point is that the book was not technical; it was easy to understand. It also provided some good references. However, I feel that the book cannot stand on its own as a guide for treatment or selecting alternative treatments and I was disappointed numerous times.
There were also areas where I felt the author should have included more information. For example, she referenced Vitamin C - rather than providing multiple examples of how Vitamin C saved dogs, I would have preferred some guidance on the various types of Vitamin C so I know which one I should purchase? Calcium Ascorbate, Ascorbic Acid, Ester-C, Sodium Ascorbate? What are the differences?
Another area of disappointment was that there was almost nothing on prednisone. Recently in talking to many folks whose dogs have been diagnosed with cancer, they leave the vet's office with prednisone when chemo is rejected as an alternative. The book was not helpful in this area at all. I am no wiser than before I read the book.
Above are just two of many examples where I felt the book did not contain sufficient information.
I began to question the accuracy of information in the book when I came to the section on chiropratics. I am familiar with chiropractics and was disappointed that she used incorrect terminology, did not seem to have her facts correct and referenced negative examples only. If she was not an advocate of chiropractics or was not familiar with the topic, she should have written nothing rather than to print inaccurate information.
I'm glad I bought and read the book; but I'm also glad it was not very expensive because I had to buy other books to fill in the gaps of missing information, as I cited above. I plan recommend the book to friends who have dogs with cancer. Although it is not an outstanding book, it is better than most I have read.
Important Book for all Pet Owners.......2002-02-16
I recommend that all pet owners should read this book in order to do all they can to protect their loved furry ones from preventable cancer. However, I did find that some of the information in the book was more speculative than fact, so it is necessary to do some additional research on some topics before drastically changing your pet's lifestyle.
Why is Cancer Killing Our Pets?: How You Can Protect and Tre.......2001-06-19
I recently discovered my beloved Rottie has cancer and this book helped me learn of the many options out there for treatment and how much of a problem companion animal cancer is becoming. It helped me center myself and get a better idea of the directions I could go. This book also helped me understand what to do from here on out, to help all my companion animals so that they live a healthy life. It explained the importance of a good, not overly processed diet. I am a board member of an animal protection organzation and have had dogs my entire life, and even with that I learned so much more from this book. If you love your animals read this book for them, it could change their lives and yours!!!
A Book That's Needed To Have Been Written for a Long Time.......2001-02-13
Deborah Straw has addressed a problem that has been plaguiging more and more pet owners daily. This well documented book looks carefully at causes, preventions, treatments and very cautiously at cures for the epidemic of cancer which is devastating our pets today. She covers every aspect of the subject and makes her statements credible with references to the many professionals with whom she has consulted. Straw's understanding of this disease and its ramifications is thorough and comprehensive. She deals with traditional as well as non-traditional aspects of prevention and treatment, leaving out nothing. Thereby, she offers the reader a myriad of choices as well as the power to take charge when that dreaded diagnosis is made. As a pet health care professional and an owner of four dogs who have died of cancer, as well as one who has survived the disease, I found Straw's book enlightening and hopeful. It is a book with which every pet owner should be familiar.
The Best Book on Cancer in Pets.......2000-12-30
I've had a cat with cancer for the past 15 months, so I've been reading everything I can get my hands on. This book not only talks about the diease itself, but covers all related topics--causes, nutritional support, insurance, and the loss. I especially like the sections on alternative care, which I believe can be as effective as any conventional treatment. Straw's resources are excellent, too, and she provides lots of fuel for further research. It's the only book of its kind, one you should add to your library even if your pet doesn't have cancer.

Three Dog Bakery Cookbook: Over 5 Recipes for All-Natural Treats for Your Dog
ASIN: 0806945621 |
Book Description
You cook for yourself. You cook for your family. You cook for your friends. Don't ignore the most faithful and loving of your companions! Recipes for 72 delectable canine repasts will have you dishing up tasty, healthful treats such as bacon drops, cheese biscuits, even beef jerky in little time--and at a fraction of the cost of commercially prepared dog food. Following his motto, "I will not put into your dog anything that I would not put into my own children," the author includes only nutritious ingredients that appeal to a dog's senses of taste and smell, and most importantly, eliminates those that can be harmful (unlike, surprisingly, other dog-food cookbooks). So, stir up some Dobis for your Doberman, some Beef Your Babies for your Basset, some Woof Balls for your Wiemeraner--and set your best friend's tail wagging with delight as he savors the results.
