All-inclusive working dog reveiw.......2006-08-18
This book covers many different possible 'occupations' of a working dog, and is written clearly. Not many pictures, it is full of information. If you are considering raising a working dog, this book outlines the various levels and certifications you (the handler) and the dog will need to complete. If you are interested in learning about a particular aspect more, this book will provide a description of that occupation and what that occupation entails.
Top Working Dogs.......2006-03-09
Found the font size small, not that easy to read. However, the content is superb, if there is an updated version (training methods etc. change)I would be first in line.
It is so good to get a book from a pro, someone who's been there, done that, got the T shirt at the very highest level.
For Serious Schutzhund Enthusiasts.......2005-07-27
After purchasing many dog training manuals and finding them not quite up to snuff, I was very pleased to finally find a book which was comprehensive and authoritative. It breaks each area of the sport down and is easy to follow. The book is intelligently written.
Great information IF you can read it!.......2004-06-24
The 3rd edition (1994) of this book is VERY HARD TO READ. The font set is about 5 or 6 points, single spaced, very tightly packed. You need great eyesight and still must be ready for eyestrain. I can read anything up close, but this is the worst book, PHYSICALLY, I've ever had to read. Still, you can't fault the quantity of information and the first (brief) perusal makes me want to read more. I was dismayed when I opened the book so I'm giving you a heads up. I'm going to buy a magnifying glass.
A great all-rounder.......2000-06-24
I have owned this book since shortly after it was published, except for the short period of time when a local police dog-man "borrowed" it. I ended up repurchasing it! This book is solid and sound in content, and has information that will appeal to beginners and experts alike in the fields of tracking, obedience and man-work. I review it as a resource book whenever I need a fresh training idea for a dog or a group of trainers. I no longer loan it - I recommend you buy your own.

This book covers it all.......2007-08-06
and then some. I've not made it all the way through yet, but I'm getting there. Some of it takes awhile to "digest" as it can be a little too wordy at times.
The Bible of Clicker Training.......2007-03-30
I felt like I was reading a textbook for a class on clicker training. Wow! The book is so methodical with so much attention to detail. If this were a textbook it would be the teacher's first choice!
You almost feel as if you are one of the dogs this guy is clicker training because, aparantly, from clicker training dogs (and, well, teaching people how to do it too) he learned how to teach and present stuff in a way his pupils will be able to understand.
European view.......2005-09-29
From european point of view the drawback of the book is that it describes the tasks of american rules for obedience trial. As we in europe have different set of tasks in our obedience trial the book did not fill the need for specific instructions on those tasks. I was also looking for more structured and simplified clear instructions in the book things are more of discussed through. Still the book was worth the money paid for it. It has lots of grounds for why to do this way. The basics of the book is fluencies on what the obedience tasks are based on and those same fluencies are still usefull with european rules too.
Best Book for those serious about Positive training.......2005-05-28
This book is for those serious about:
- obedience
- agility
- other sports, including herding
- service dogs
- or just an eager, happily-working and well-behaved pet.
I'd suggest that people first have at least a basic understanding of operant conditioning (clicker training) but I say that only because Mr Spector provides a great deal of detail, explanation, trouble-shooting, and theory for each of the exercises, and his focus is on the serious trainer.
Those are all advantageous aspects of this book, particularly for those of us who want the details and thought processes behind the actions. Working with totally positive principles, he guides us through the most basic of exercises right on through to utility exercises.
Now, for someone not interested in competitive obedience you'd think this book is not the one for you -- not so! Many of the exercises and behaviours he details are transferrable to the agility ring (and elsewhere) and I've discovered some are also transferrable to herding.
The style of writing is simple, straight-forward (not what you'd expect from a lawyer) and very easy to follow. He sometimes provides examples that relate to humans to help understand some of the principles - another plus. Filled with clear photographs, it is possible for any dog guardian to follow and understand his explanations.
I also found that the logic he uses behind training certain exercises at certain stages, unlike many other trainers, made so much sense. One example: he recommends training a dog to heel off-leash before doing it on-leash. His explanation for why and how has worked flawlessly with my own dogs! I'll never go back to my old way again. He does this throughout his book.
The index makes it easy to look up specific exercises, problems, or other related information.
Even if your dog will never enter an obedience competition, and you simply want a reliable, happily-working, obedient dog -- this book will get you that and more.
Best Clicker Book Out There.......2005-05-10
I've read a bunch of dog training and clicker training books, and this is by far my favorite. If you are still a little foggy on how to implement clicker training or if you are completely new to this concept, then I'd recommend this book. It has very clear and concise explanations on how to shape certain obehaviors, and it reads well too.

It's every dog lover's privilege that Kyra and Chalcy took time from their performing schedule to share their secrets in 101 Dog Tricks.

Great pictures.......2007-10-10
This book is really fun to look through. I can't actually say that my dog has learned any of the tricks, but it has been fun trying to teach her.
101 Dog Tricks.......2007-10-10
This is a really well organized book. I find it very helpful. The author has conveyed all of her methodology clearly yet leaves room for the reader to improvise, build and create new tricks. We have and continue to enjoy the book.
Easiest book to understand and actually do/teach from.......2007-09-28
There's a reason for the weimaraner on the cover: they learn exceptionally fast, however this book includes several other breeds. The photos and explanations are top notch minus a comment of poor taste which I wouldn't share with children or would intentionally overlook, change the page, ignore due to its content. Hands down, this is the best I've seen and the tricks are well organized, broken down into steps that are learnable. Don't leave the book near a puppy while you're not looking. Ours has been chewed a bit due to the frequency with which we refer to it! and it got left within reach of pup. It's a great coffee table book too, but then, if you're training your pup, and the tricks are endless, you'll never get bored--it's just a question of how much time do you have? your dog will be the show piece. Don't forget to charge admission.
Buy three copies... I'll tell you why..........2007-09-24
I suggest buying 3 copies of this book... not 1...
First, because its a great coffee table book... hey, Chelcy (the author's dog) is a Weimeraner - - and both are very photogenic - - on top of it, the graphic design and lay-out of the book are not only sensitive and informative, but very visually appealing... You can feel the excitement and enthuisiasm
Second - - its a fantastic reference book... and the idea of thinking "tricks" instead of cut and dry obediance I think is great for both the trainer and the dog. Though most of the tricks do have elements of obediance to them, they are presented in a way that makes training your dog more fun and lightharded and you're not thinking, "good dog"/"bad dog"/"leash correction" - - In fact, I like the way the author not only has troubleshooting tips for each tricks, but will even give some ideas how difficult the trick is, what tricks need to be learned first, and how long it takes some dogs to learn. - - Also, all descriptions use simple, practical and effective language... The descriptions match up with the photos and the points are gotten across in a way that communicates the ideas to you and teaches you to teach them to your dog.
Finally... buy a third copy because... some dogs *cough* have tendencies to nibble on certain people's reading material, especially when allowed in the bed. (o.k. that's an obedience issue.)
As for the tricks, they range from basic sit/stay/rollover agility type tricks - - to classics like "bring me a beer"/"bring the newspaper" as well as a few parlor tricks/routines. The book also explains standard hand signals as well as commands.
Incidentally - - there I would like a refund for 2 of the tricks. One involves the human doing a handstand, the other a cratwheel... Trust me, if you're the "bring me my beer" trick type, you won't be doing those two...
All in all, this is one book that lives up to its own hype! Highly recommended!
Great dog trick training.......2007-09-19

An obedience instructor's bible!.......2000-07-16

The best handbook ever for trainers!.......1998-03-19
Dr. Volhard & Ms. Fisher have once again collaborated on a useful, motivational, and entertaining handbook for dog obedience. This time they focus on the instructor. They give detailed advise on the hows and whys of taking a group of handlers through a successful session. The fundamental point of the handbook is that training a dog is one thing - but, teaching a class how to train their dogs is quite different. Remarkably well written and entertaining: a MUST for all training directors and should be in all dog club and dog school libraries.

Great Book.......2007-10-06
This book really helped me decide if I wanted to get a Yorkie. I felt it didn't sugar coat them and made them feel real.
biting?.......2007-09-16
I cannot believe there is no chapter on biting as a puppy. It is a thoroughly obnoxious habit--thought this book would have had some words of wisdom.
Yorkies.......2007-09-13
It's a very good book and it made me realize that I don't want a Yorkshire Terrier. Too small!
Dummy No More!.......2007-07-24
This book was a God send. I'd highly suggest buying it and reading it from cover to cover before bringing your little Yorkie home. The book is an easy read and because of the format, you can skip to what's important to you and read the rest at a later time. We bought our little puppy from the breeder when he was a mere 6 weeks unlike the standard 12 weeks, which I was actually a little nervous about. However, the book was right on the money with instructions on what to expect when picking him up from the breeder to his very first night in his new home. We just recently took the little guy to his first appointment with the vet. That too is covered in the book! The vet was impressed with how much I knew about the breed and puppies in general. I have this book to thank for that. I really would have been lost without it.

A clever book for a clever dog, Dear Mrs. LaRue collects a series of guilt-inducing letters sent home by the cat-chasing, chicken-pie-eating Ike to his "cruel" owner Mrs. LaRue, whom he hopes will come to her senses and spring him from obedience school.
Desperate to come home, Ike shows great enthusiasm for stretching the truth about his treatment at Brotweiler Canine Academy. Illustrator and author Mark Teague has developed a hilariously disdainful and dignified voice for the not-very-put-upon Ike, but Teague's most cunning innovation is the book's format: He splits each spread between what's really happening, done in color, and what Ike's imagining and exaggerating to Mrs. LaRue, in big thought bubbles using dramatic black and white. As Ike delivers his first letter, in his thought bubble we see Ike carted away in the Brotweiler Canine Academy paddy wagon ("We Aim to Tame"!), up a windy road to a scary-looking quasi-Transylvanian compound, complete with lightning and bats; in full-color reality, Brotweiler looks much more like the UCLA campus in spring bloom, with a sign pointing to the sauna (on the right) and the pool (on the left).
Ike's first carefully typed letter pleads, "How could you do this to me? This is a PRISON, not a school! You should see the other dogs. They are BAD DOGS, Mrs. LaRue! I do not fit in." Subsequent letters describe the staff ("The GUARDS here are all caught up in this 'good dog, bad dog' thing"), the "crimes" that landed him there ("I'd like to clear up some misconceptions about the Hibbins' cats. First, they are hardly the little angels Mrs. Hibbins makes them out to be. Second, how should I know what they were doing out on the fire escape in the middle of January? They were being a bit melodramatic, don't you think?"), and his eventual plans for escape ("I'm sorry it has come to this, since I am really a very good dog, but frankly you left me no choice"). Teague drew inspiration from a couple of sneaky dogs in his own life; kids and grownups reading Ike's tall tales might be reminded of loyal and misunderstood pooches of their own. Book Description
When Ike Larue is "imprisoned" at the Igor Brotweiler Canine Academy, he tries everything to get sent home--weepy letters to his owner, even illness. In reality, Brotweiler is more like camp than prison, but still, Ike's not cut out for life w/o Mrs. Larue & his creature comforts. Finally, he runs away only to find himself back in Snort City--just in time to save Mrs. Larue's life.Teague is at the top of his fetching form in this madcap comedy where the real world of Brotweiler & the one Ike imagines are brilliantly depicted thru split-screen visuals, the former in color & the latter in b&w.

ONE OF MY FAVORITES - WELL DONE WORK HERE.......2006-11-03
This has always been one of my favorites, and indeed, on of the favories of the kids in the classes I teach. Ike the dog has been sent to abedience school due to Ike being, like one of my dogs, absolutely spoiled rotten. This book is a series of letters, written by Ike, to his owner, Mrs. LaRue. The letters are much the same as some ultra bright kid might write home to his parents if he or she found themselves in the same situation as Ike. The text here is great and I love the illustrations. This is a fun book, in particular for dog lovers and those who understant, somewhat how dogs think. I love the way Ike is continously "bending the truth" somewhat in his various complaints. All in all recommend this one highly. It is a very enjoyable book!

Dear Mrs. LaRue
By, Mark Teague
Reviewed by, Mac
"Why did you do this to me?" Is the question Ike LaRue writes to his master, Mrs. LaRue. Dear Mrs. LaRue By, Mark Teague is a great book for kids starting to read. This book is extremely funny, and I strongly recommend it for anyone that wants a laugh.
In Dear Mrs. LaRue Ike, the dog, is sent to an obedience school called Brotwiellier. Ike tries to persuade Mrs. LaRue to come and get him by writing letters. The book is told through Ike's eyes. And he tells Mrs. LaRue that the place is horrible, but it is luxurious. Ike tries to run away.
I think that this books strongest point is its characters. Ike was serious and funny and I liked that. But, he lied a lot to get out of Brotwiellier. Ike told everything he did and that it wasn't clear him that what he did was bad.
The ways the characters reacted to the plot were awesome, but unrealistic. The book showed that Ike was truly sorry for what he did. I knew that he was sorry because he wrote it in his letters.
The book was too short for my taste, but it was funny. So, overall this book was very good. The theme is to appreciate your home. If you want a laugh or teach your child how to read. This book is awesome.
Loved this Book - by Dog Reviewer.......2006-01-12
Mom read this book to me and I loved the pictures, they were so colorful I tried to eat them. I don't blame Ike for taking exception to obedience school - doesn't Mrs. LaRue recognize that she has a wire fox terrier and we wires are inately naughty and disobedient! It's in our genes! Mrs LaRue should have gotten a German Shephard or a Rottweiler if she wanted a good dog! I highly recommend this book to my canine friends.

Sorry...I don't like Dear Mrs. LaRue.......2005-08-04
It's only my opinion and no one agrees, don't belive me, I'm just a tiny voice, no one shares my opinion, so don't bother me, so if you like it, set your opinion free. Write a review wheather you're big or small or short or tall cuz' if you're small, use the kids review form. Click the "Write a review" link and choose "Use the kid's review form". Anyways, I think Ike, the dog in this book, is a liar. His owner, Mrs. LaRue, sends him to a wonderful obidience school but he wants to go home so what does he do? Send letters to Mrs. LaRue saying it's an awful prison! What? This encoruges lies! Maybe it dosen't encourage lies, but I didn't like Ike. Most children & their parents will love it. The rest of my family (Including Chocolate Dog, Russian Blue Witch, and JaneLovesJesus) love it, they think it's cute (that's why mom got it from the library, it looked cute) but I don't. Don't trust me, I'm a small voice in a sea of voices. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!" (Except this review.)
tres postmodern.......2005-02-20
The teacher who used this book to teach the difference between "fact and opinion" needs to go back to school. If anything, this book is a send-up on "reality." My daughter enjoys looking at the illustrations time and again interpreting them for me. The problem that she has, a problem I have no answer for, is this--- if the first set of illustrations tells the story from the dog's point of view, then WHOSE point of view does the second set of illustration reveal?

worth owning.......2007-07-25
This is a good training book. Her methods are loving yet firm. I found it especially helpful with providing information on training a dog to heel. This book is very technical and geared towards those who wish to compete at elite level obedience competition. Those of us who own ordinary dogs can also benefit.
Expert Obedience Training for Dogs.......2006-08-21
Two main comments. Firstly, the book is mistitled or I misread the meaning of the title and I would be delighted to return it. This is a book devoted primarily on how to make your dog perform "tricks" with much on showmanship. I have no interest in that but I do have an acute interest in dog obedience relative to the master's care of their puppy and mature dog. Problems handlers encounter in "greeting" of your dog with other dogs and people.
Secondly, the book, as written, talks down to the reader and unless you have had some professional experience with dogs, you feel very unqualified to read on. I felt intimidated by it.
The classics never die.......2006-05-09
This book continues to be THE unequivocal expert's choice. Despite comments that her methods are 'dated' (a remark I find says more about that reviewer than about Strickland's book) the simple fact is that dog training is a skill that has been honed for hundreds of years. These methods were found to be effective when much more was required of dogs than that they be fashionable, pampered companions. I sincerely doubt that the 'innovations' and gimmicks of recent years will be found, in the end, to be more than passing fads. You can have your clickers... what Wynn teaches is *real* obedience.
If you want solid, competent, reliable response from your dogs, then use Wynn's methods and her books. Otherwise, continue bribing and entreating and cajoling your dog with clickers and treats instead of training it. Don't worry, *eventually* they will do what you want... at least half the time.
Those who want a thorough grounding in training basics will find this a wonderful resource. It is still the most comprehensive collection of training basics out there. Dogs trained with this method will be happy, reliable workers. Isn't that what we all want?
Still a great book.......2005-08-14
This is still a great book for competition obedience, even though it is a bit dated. The author is a long-time top AKC obedience winner, her record is impressive! Forget the clicker stuff! More for the dog trainer wanting to tweak their training techniques and showmanship to the next level and get the most from their dogs.
The Ultimate Training Guide. A must have CLASSIC!.......2003-07-06
Fads, gadgets and gimmicks in training come and go. They DO sell books, classes and fancy equipment... and also confuse a lot of dogs and their owners. But this is a masterpiece of SOUND advice and a method of training that is based on a life-time of outstanding success in obedience trials. HOW can anyone argue with her degree of success? Winifred G. Strickland's methods will be around forever because they work so beautifully. She has won endless titles and done it while loving and respecting her happy, enthusiastic, super dogs. Her gentle, intelligent training program will succeed with other breeds that are not as naturally keen to work as her German Shepherd dogs.
I love this book. A classic that will probably never go out of print. What a joy to read and apply! It has an honored spot on my reference shelf and is one of the most valuable books I have ever purchased on the subject! It is easily worth ten times the price.

This book helped me understand how to teach my dog the commands in Rally Obedience. It has a great step by step description of each command, and how you are to use the clicker. It has really helped me in teaching my the basics.
Positive Training Approach.......2007-04-10
I have a 10 month old basset hound and we have completed one Rally Course. I used this book and its techniques as a supplement while training my basset. It's a great approach and my dog picked up on the positive clicker reinforcement very quickly. I'd highly recommend this book. It's been very helpful in how I train my pup.
Totally Sweet.......2007-04-01
This book does a lot of stuff for you and your dog pupil(s). It teaches you how to make the dog enjoy working, make concepts super easy for it to grasp, make it so the dog learns the behaviors it needs very, very well, and, of course, tells you what the APDT and AKC rally courses require of you and how to go through the courses and kick butt! Basically it prepares you and your dog for a great, delightful journey down the training road :)
Rally Obedience.......2007-03-11
This book is well written and easy to follow. I was able to get a good sense of the ins and outs of rally obedience.
Wonderful!.......2007-02-21
What an eye opener for Rally. The information can be used in a wider range of training than just Rally which is nice when you consider how many books there are about Dog Training in general. My little girl and I are getting ready for our first Rally trial and I'm comfortable to say we are ready because of the book. Great addition even if you've been training for a while or just getting started in Rally, Obedience and would help with Agility training too!

Received my book in a timely fashion. Have been working with my Great Dane with this book and is working well. Excellent purchase choice.
Clear and direct.......2006-03-16
Clear, direct guidance. The author recognizes that dogs are not equals, they need training to be obedient and keep them safe as well as make them socially welcome. A good, practical book.
Wonderful Resource!.......2005-08-23
This book is very informative, and a must have if you want to work with your dog without paying a professional trainer. The picture illustrations are a perfect compliment to the written instructions. I especially liked the detail given about other obedience issues such as dog language and how aggression begins between dogs. This book is a permanent addition to our living room reading material!

Premier basic, intermediate, and advanced training book.......2004-06-06
Personally acquainted with the authors, after attending many of the problem clinics that Milo held, I then enrolled to be trained as an obedience trainer under their tutelage--and have come back to this book again and again as a resource. You can scarcely get a better steer than to be directed to this publication. It does teach you to think from the dog's point of view, and usually you can then figure out where the glitch is--magical. Firmly, five stars.
